Really annoying thing about trying learn more about specific Native American groups is the fact that half the time the information about them is just. not attributed to any particular people. Like wow that """""traditional native american outfit""""" is really beautiful but like. WHICH FUCKING GROUP ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THERE ARE LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF THEM!!!!!!!
like they don't even mention which REGION a particular belief/piece of clothing/art is from and its like. I am grabbing you by the shoulders and speaking directly to the people that do this: I Want You To Look Me In My Fucking Eyes And Tell Me the Cultures Of New York And Texas Are Interchangeable. Do It. You Fucking Can't And That's The Whole Goddamn Point.
We can recognize that two states in this country can have vastly different cultures, despite being united under THE SAME FUCKING FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. So why do people refuse to do this with native tribes that were governed by completely differing bodies on completely different parts of the continent??? It fucking BAFFLES me. TELL ME WHICH SPECIFIC GROUP SOMETHING CAME FROM I AM NO LONGER FUCKING ASKING

Tips For Buying a Catalytic Converter From a Scrap Yard
Tumblr media
If you are in need of a new catalytic converter for your car, it is best to buy from a reputable scrap yard. This way, you are guaranteed to get the best price. Regardless of whether you are looking to sell your converter or to sell it yourself, the price quotes from different scrap yards should be comparable. Listed below are some tips to help you make an informed decision. Once you know the basics, buying a new catalytic converter will be easier than ever.
While it is possible to replace the catalytic converter yourself click here , it is best to seek out a mechanic to ensure it is the right one. Often, a mechanic may make mistakes, and your vehicle may not meet federal or state regulations if you don't purchase a catalytic converter from a reliable source. Catalytic converters come in two forms: single-pass and two-way. One is for reducing excess hydrocarbon emissions and the other is for reducing carbon monoxide. One type can do both tasks simultaneously.
Once you've determined your vehicle's model and year, you can select a catalytic converter that meets the requirements for your car. For example, if your vehicle has CA emissions, you'll need a standard grade. A performance catalytic converter is recommended for vehicles that perform well in races and other events. A direct-fit catalytic converter is easier to install and meets state emissions regulations. Once you've decided on a catalytic converter for your car, you'll need to make sure you know how to fit it on your vehicle.
Another tip to buying a catalytic converter from a scrap yard is to make sure you know the serial number. A serial number is an extremely accurate way to sell a catalytic converter, as it will tell you the make, model, and year of the vehicle. It can also help you get an accurate quote from a scrap yard learn more . There are many scrap yards that will buy catalytic converters after the vehicle has left the factory.
The price of replacing a catalytic converter ranges from $1,000 to $3,000. This is a substantial price to pay for a replacement catalytic converter, so it is best to shop around when buying. You can also try recycling a used catalytic converter as it is worth $250 to $500 in recycling. It is also cheaper than buying a new one, as it's a small part of the car's cost.
Another great way to protect your car is to consider getting your vehicle's VIN number etched onto the part. The Ventura police department has reported a 293% increase in catalytic converter thefts, so they have started a VIN-etching event at the local mall. Residents lined up to get their VIN numbers permanently marked on the car part. Hopefully, this will discourage thieves from taking car parts. Additionally, legislators have begun introducing legislation to make it more difficult for criminals to sell their looted car parts. This year, in 36 states, 150 bills have been introduced. Of those, sixteen have passed. If you want to know more about this topic, then click here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalytic_converter

“Kin Assigning” and Hearttypes/Synpaths
As most of you probably don’t know, I (try to) clearly distinguish between synpaths and otherheartedness (I will add the link to my post talking about it, and other relevant posts, in the reblogs). But for this post, I think it makes sense to put them together.
I have a sort of theory that “kin assignments” (which are usually only seen in KFF communities) would be more accurate and useful if they were “hearttype assignments” or “synpath assignments.”
Synpaths taking the place of the “kin” in “kin assignment” should be fairly straightforward. Given that the definition of synpath is described, by the original coiner, as follows:
“Synpath is a tidy name for something you identify with on several levels, which could be a concept that resonates really strongly with you, an animal or mythological creature you feel you act like, or a person or character you share a lot of common behaviors with, among other things”  (emphasis added)
...it makes sense that, since kin assignments are usually based off similar/shared behaviours, it would be more appropriate for synpaths to be assigned.
So what about hearttypes? This is where I’m not certain, because I actually haven’t read about a lot of ‘hearted experiences in this case. Given that some otherhearted experiences may include:
a deep longing to be X, a deep admiration of or empathy for X, X feeling like your ideal self somehow, feeling like you should have been X but aren't for whatever reason, and/or feeling like you should be among or friends or family with X
...many of these experiences, for me, work best when I have a basis. Basically, I’ve only ever found myself to be otherhearted with something if I can somehow see myself in that thing to begin with. Otherwise, “ideal self” is completely unreachable, so my brain can’t make that connection. “Feeling like I should have been X” starts with “I’m kind of like X, so why am I not X?” (It may be worth mentioning that my alterhuman experiences are solely psychological). It’s almost like setting a goal. Setting a goal that’s way too big, way too soon is not likely to be achieved. Setting smaller goals, ones that you can actually see yourself completing, are more achievable.
Since, in my case, my hearttypes have so far all had something in common with me (at least in my mind), it still makes sense to use them as a basis for “assigning” (though their “relatability” is to a lesser extent than synpaths, so may be less reliable). However, you could also pull the similarities that my hearttypes all have with each other and go on “assigning” from there.
The thing is, I don’t know if this is a common experience for those with hearttypes, which is why this post covers both synpaths and hearttypes while simultaneously still keeping them separated.
So, am I saying that “assigned kins” are really just synpaths or hearttypes, and KFFers don’t know about the right terms? In some cases, absolutely, and that’s not a new theory. I’ve just never seen that theory linked to “kin assignments” and so I wanted to put my thoughts out there.
Am I saying that beings should assign others “identities”? If it’s just for fun, and to bring possible identities to someone’s attention from a source or viewpoint they might not have considered before, I don’t see why not. Of course, this also includes consideration over pressure on if the assignee decides to confirm/accept the identity or not.

The Arcana - Getting MC A Gift
-- Asra: Magical Technology
Tumblr media
Asra’s not a very gifty person. Not because he’s selfish, or ungenerous, he’s just not the type of person who’s prone to giving material things to people.
But that changes once you enter the picture. He’s finally got you back in his arms, and he’s gonna cherish every moment he has with you. What better to mark this anniversary than with a gift?
And it’s not gonna be any little trinket, either. If Asra’s gonna gift, he goes all out and really puts effort into creating/finding the perfect thing.
After weeks of meticulous research and careful crafting, he finishes his amazing gift, just in time for the holidays. Before the two of you retire for the night, Asra pulls out this colorful glass box etched with runes and imbued with energy.
It’s a communication device, he explains. You fill the interior with water from any source, and it immediately connects with his own - he pulls out an identical box.
You and Asra can reach each other by use of a water spell, which can be inconvenient because the spell uses up energy and requires both to be at a body of water simultaneously. But with this, you can reliably call upon Asra at any time, knowing that he’ll be sure to reply.
It’s the perfect gift. You hug him tightly and promise to keep it safe, if he hangs onto his, too. He promises to always be in touch from now on.
-- Julian: Imported Shawl
Tumblr media
A big day’s coming up! It’s a holiday, or maybe your birthday, and Julian needs to find a gift fitting of you. Which is easier said than done, because even if the two of you are a very familiar, close couple, he’s still kinda stupid and panics over finding you the right gift. What if he gives you something stupid??
He considers jewelry, perfumes, rare magical ingredients for your work, you like to cook so maybe you’ll like this spice set, or perhaps these fancy oil paints, oooh that’s a gorgeous crystal lamp it would look beautiful in your room -
He ends up chickening out a bit and going simple, buying a hand-printed shawl woven from rare Prakan silk. It feels luxurious and soft, but it’s naturally hardy and resistant to wear and tear.
It’s nothing big, so he delivers his gift to you along with a romantic bouquet of flowers and a nice dinner. He hands you the wrapped package blushing like crazy.
You love it, and immediately take it out to try it on. He marvels at how the colors compliment your complexion beautifully. Throughout the dinner, Julian talks about visiting the Pearl Isles of Prakra and seeing the fields of mulberry leaves dedicated to silkworm cultivation, before the crew was beset by a massive swarm of sharks.
-- Nadia: Fancy Desserts
Tumblr media
Nadia would shower you in trinkets if you allowed her. If you’d rather she didn’t, she won’t indulge. But if you do enjoy her luxury, she pulls no stops in making sure you’re surrounded by the most beautiful and gorgeous things.
But not just material things. Nadia also wants to buy you experiences. Like hunting parties by the famous Star Lakes, or traveling to the Golden Gulf and soaking in their famous mud baths. With royalty comes opportunity, and Nadia firmly believes in sharing it with others. Especially you.
One of the simpler experiences she can gift you is cuisine. Tasting food from around the world is always a fulfilling experience, and it requires no fancy occasion to indulge. Mealtimes at the palace are kinda unpredictable, since you never know what Nadia requests the kitchens to do that day. It could be simpler domestic cuisine, or it could be very esoteric and worldly.
Sometimes, you’ll wake up from your nap in the library (”Falling asleep from working too hard again, dear?”) and see a small box placed next to you, and you open it to reveal floral honey marshmallow treats, imported from a far-away land. One of your many little gifts from Nadia, who loves you so much and wants your life to be sweet. Your rewarding kiss to her is tinged with sugar.
-- Portia: Personalized Ceramics
Tumblr media
As a palace maidservant, Portia earns a sturdy. She’s got enough coin for her own indulgences, and her pouch is even more plentiful because she rarely spends money on anything luxurious or expensive. She’s got her cottage, a stocked larder, and her family, she doesn’t need gold or jewels.
When it comes to buying you a gift, then it’s time to bust out her savings and consider her options. With this money, she could get you something big, like those bricks of imported chocolate she sometimes sees in the market, ohh those would make a luxurious and delicious gift, wouldn’t they? Or maybe you’d like those embroidered slippers, or a set of lapis lazuli earrings ...
While touring the market, she passes by a pottery and gets an idea; with the help of a potter, she throws two large mugs and paints them painstakingly with designs that reminder her of the two of you. Within the week, they’re ready.
It’s a perfect gift. Instead of something more ostentatious, it’s a personalized reminder of her love. You unwrap the mugs and marvel at her impressive craftsmanship. She blushes and mumbles that the potter helped a lot, but you didn’t want to hear it and hugged her tightly.
She keeps one, you keep the other. Whenever the two of you sit down to tea or coffee, you both sit across from each other with the mugs and it makes your hearts warm at the sight.
-- Muriel: Protection Charm
Tumblr media
Muriel’s lived a solitary life for so long, he’s pretty much lost track of any holiday dates. When it comes time for the rest of the world to begin gift-giving, he’s completely out of the loop unless he picks up the atmosphere while during his rare ventures into town, or maybe Asra asks him if he’s gonna give something to you.
He panics a bit. He’s never really gifted something before, and no, those little pouches of myrrh don’t count. He’s got no money, and no real idea of the value of any trinkets he could buy.
But then he realizes as he tours his nearby forest during his daily chores, he’s got an entire goldmine of riches right at his doorstep. The forest is full of useful bounty, and years of roughing it has taught him more than a few tricks.
With some help from Asra, Muriel carefully carves away at a bit of petrified wood - a very powerful magical catalyst that would cost a fortune if you didn’t know where to find some - until it forms a ring decorated with runes. A spell for protection.
The next time you two meet, Muriel stammers and digs into his pocket before depositing the ring into your outstretched hands, and you feel the power radiating off of it. It’s an amazing bit of craftsmanship and magic.
He feels so light on his feet seeing you gush over your gift. Muriel vows to gift you more often, if it meant making you happy.
-- Lucio: Bejeweled Necklace
Tumblr media
This uncursed-Count would empty the treasury in your name, if he didn’t know any better. And he just barely does. But he certainly doesn’t spare any expense when it comes to burying you with decadence; gold and silver, expensive furs and silk, the rarest wines and exquisite foods.
In the beginning, he didn’t particularly listen to your criticisms of his spending, and just kept on delivering boxes of luxurious chocolates or new gowns. But as time went on, he grew up a bit and learned that all these riches can go to more productive means than earning your affection. Which he already had, and didn’t need to fight for.
Still, even as his rule improved, he didn’t totally abandon his habit of spoiling you. He just kept it to ‘proper’ occasions like holidays, birthdays, or anniversaries. For your birthday, he decided to commission a famous jeweler from all the way in Nevivon for a truly ostentatious necklace dripping with white gems and platinum.
It was actually a mark of growth on his part that he didn’t make a huge show over this gift, and didn’t deliver it to you over the dinner party in an effort to brag. Instead, he gently handed it over in the privacy of the bedroom, and relished in how your eyes lit up at the exquisite wealth.
He helped you clasp it around your neck, and kissed you softly. “You deserve the best. Not just in the form of jewels, but in everything.”

Any HCs for older (30s/40s) / married byler? :)
Yes! And most of them are blatantly self-indulgent (don’t look too closely at Mike’s career path, I swear it’s not just me projecting), and I’m not even sorry. :) Let’s gooooo!
(Also, note: I took this in a very fluffy domestic direction, so sorry if anybody was really hoping for some NSFW HCs or wedding HCs or something like that - although I might be convinced to expand on that another time. ;) )
-As a young couple in their 20s they lived in a typical shitty apartment near where they went to college, but now as they’re getting more established and their careers are picking up, they’ve moved into something more similar to a townhouse / condominium in the city where they work. They don’t need an entire house, really, and besides, they’re usually not a huge fan of suburbia. If they did have a house, it would probably be one of those small-ish houses near the outskirts of the city - you know the type I mean. Lots of renovation expenses because it’s so old, but unique and cozy enough that it makes up for the hassle. I do tend to picture them in more of a townhouse/condo situation, though.
-Speaking of careers, they both got into something creative. Neither of them at all wanted to work in any type of office environment. Will fought tooth and nail to make a living with his art, which has made for some rough spots financially, but now that they’re getting through their 30s and into their 40s, it seems like it’s finally starting to even out and become more reliable as a source of income. He may do concept art for movie / TV / video game studios, he may do comic illustrations, he may do commissions, maybe a combination.
-Mike, meanwhile, leaned into his passion for storytelling and his leadership skills - but I feel like Mike would wander in a couple different directions with that. Trying out this path, then this one - less of a cohesive, driven career path than Will’s, just trying things until he landed on something he really liked. Maybe he dabbled in computer engineering in college for a while (see: Mike’s nerdy mini-conversation with Bob about programming languages), decided that wasn’t quite for him, tried some creative writing classes, some film studies. Maybe he was a high school history or language arts teacher for a few years after college, what with his caring and nurturing instincts, his nerdiness, his leadership skills, his passion for stories (LotR, Star Wars, and D&D, anyone?), etc. But that probably wasn’t quite for him. Eventually, after having storytelling hobbies for most of his life, he starts integrating that into his career kind of on accident - and that’s when he hits on what he actually likes doing for a living. He consistently writes short stories on the side and submits them to magazines for publication. Maybe he uses something like commercial writing/directing as a stepping-stone, making heartfelt hit-you-in-the-feels and funny-memorable commercials for shitty instant coffee and cotton tee shirts, and that block on his resume is what gets him into The Business for real. From there it’s small-time TV  studios, sitting in a writers’ room hunched over cold coffee cups, chattering with a table full of other creatives about plot twists that will air on local stations. Or maybe he’s on set, wearing black jeans and a black tee that won’t reflect the light and mess up the shot, flipping through a clipboard of rumpled papers and hustling towards a fast-incoming deadline. Maybe he’s third-in-command on set, right-hand-man to the right-hand-man of the director. Continuity supervisor or art director. Or maybe he’s a practical effects guy, mixing up buckets of sludge or fake blood or figuring out a way to make a plastic-and-foam lobster puppet look alive. In any case, he’s doing something he really enjoys, and he’s steadily moving up in the ranks. Will swears he’s going to be directing blockbusters in Hollywood before they’re fifty; Mike always scoffs at that, laughing it off, but Will isn’t entirely joking.
-They have a medium-sized dog - something with a long snout and a long tail. Will counts himself as a dog person, but for a while there after the fall of ‘84, it was hard for either of them to be around big dogs without remembering the Demodogs. But it’s been decades, and somewhere in their late 30s (when they finally live somewhere with some form of backyard), they finally feel ready to get a puppy.
-Semi-regularly, they group-call the old Party and play D&D over the phone (much like The Adventure Zone). Sometimes one or both of them (Mike or Will) will be trying to do something else in the background at the same time - cooking dinner, working on a piece of art, etc. (Hey, they’re adults, they’re chronically short on time. Gotta multitask where they can.) This leads to occasional bouts of hilarity - like the time Mike almost knocked his entire laptop into a pot of spaghetti sauce because he was trying to DM and cook simultaneously. These over-the-phone D&D sessions are invariable merry and hilarious, cheering everyone up even after the worst of days. The Party is often spread out over the whole country - Mike and Will probably in one of the hubs of the storytelling industry (San Francisco or NYC), Dustin somewhere in the midwest doing scientific field work, Lucas still somewhere in or near Indiana, El and Max living in a new city every other year - but these phone calls bring them all together, and remind them of “simpler” times when they were kids in the Wheelers’ basement.
-Nancy is a highly successful journalist who travels a lot for her work, and whenever she and Mike / Will are in the same city, they make sure to meet up for coffee if not a day or two of old-times sibling shenanigans. Nancy has considered Will like a brother ever since they were teenagers, and that only strengthens as they grow older. But Mike, especially, reverts right back to a fifteen year old whenever his big sister is in town, throwing potato chips at her across the table and teasing her until she chases him with her soup spoon, and the whole time Will is just laughing with his face in his hands, pretending to be embarrassed but really just happy to see the two of them both happy.
-Similar situation with Jonathan. ^^^ He kept up his photography through the years, but like Mike, he’s wandered from career path to career path, just trying things out. (Whether he and Nancy are together depends on your own HCs, but be assured, whenever he’s in town he and Will are just as insufferable as Mike and Nancy.)
-It’s a long time before either (let alone both) of them feel ready to seriously consider kids. They both have a lot to work through after what they went through as kids themselves, and being a parent means being 100% there for someone else’s needs, often at the sacrifice of your own. Not to mention that with both of their creative-based careers, with not nearly as much financial stability as some of their peers, they’ve had some years where supporting just the two of them is a challenge. But eventually, they do get to the point where they start thinking about kids. I think they’d have at least one. Maybe they adopt, maybe they team up with El and Max (depending on how you HC the girls at that point) to do an in vitro deal, it depends.
-They visit Joyce and Hop (who are married) for Christmas. El and Max come home for the holidays, too. Joyce and Hop moved out of Hawkins together after all the kids moved away for college. Not too awfully far from Indiana, but far enough from Hawkins that they could leave the memories behind. Somewhere fairly rural, but not quite small-town. A large town or small-to-mid-size city, maybe, where they have a house with a big backyard and a big front yard and enough combined beds and couches to house all the “kids” over the holidays.
-Ever since college, they go to Pride every year - most likely along with El and Max, if the four of them can arrange to meet up.
-Mike and Will still tease each other a lot and play-fight and they still tussle for the remote or the last fry, and they still have nerdy posters up in their living room, and they still trust each other more than anything else and they still geek out over their interests together and they still bicker and protect each other and love each other. So, really, not too much has changed since they were teenagers - they’re just in a better (read: much less homophobic) environment, working on their mental health, growing, healing from years-old traumas, doing what they love for a living (after decades of fighting tooth and nail to make it work), spending time with loved ones. Just living life. Taking new risks. Riding the ups and downs together.

GET ACCESS
The IPTV scene is currently a mess with the recent shutdown of XtreamCodes as providers are scrambling to find alternate channel sources and panel software. Iconic has successfully migrated to a new platform. For other providers, I cannot vouch so use at your own risk.
Also, a majority of IPTV services are currently experiencing issues with their payment provider, which may delay access to the service once payment is done. Closely follow the instruction by the providers to avoid delays.
This also highlights once again why it is so important to use a VPN service and Bitcoin as an IPTV user to protect your privacy. Seriously, get a VPN now for the price of a bucket of popcorn!
which is the fastest and most secure VPN in the industry. It is very easy to install on any device including Android TV boxes. Also, it comes with a 31-day money-back guarantee. If you don't like their service, you can always ask for a refund.
I make all my IPTV and VPN related purchases with Bitcoin to protect my identity, and you should too! Check out these guides on

Iconic Streams – Best IPTV for English TV and Sports
In my quest for finding the best IPTV services, I am constantly trying out new and up and coming providers to find what everyone is looking for: A reliable and affordable IPTV service provider that covers all the bases. Plenty of channels, HD streaming quality, minimal buffering, and an EPG that covers at least the mainstream channels. It seems like I found another one of those: Iconic Streams.
It doesn’t come without some downsides, of course. After all, IPTV streaming is almost always a compromise of cost vs quality vs reliability (certainly when compared to cable providers). But let’s start with some of the positives.
New providers are always a good thing. For one, it fuels the competition which leads to lower prices and better services. But, more importantly, new services tend to be under subscribed. This allows for greater bandwidth allocation to individual streams and more reliable service for users. Finally, many of the big-name providers tend to get blocked by UK ISPs at some point, requiring a VPN to continue to stream Premier League matches. This is not the case with new services.
Iconic Streams definitely seems to have plenty of server power to spare, granting every subscriber 2 simultaneous streams at no extra cost. This is great since it allows you to stream your football game in the living room, while your wife watches her reality TV show in the bedroom.

I want to help a young woman. She is depressed and anxious. And her health is not so good. I don't know how to explain the seriousness of the situation to her. Without sounding like a game sire. I would do anything for her. Only I have the feeling that she doesn't want my help. :-(
I’ll try and answer as best as I can under the cut (It’s not a super triggering discussion, it’s just long because there’s so many possibilities that may and may not help).
But, an important footnote to know is that, even though I was initially going to school to become a counsellor, I am not a professional in any form of the word. I have an interest in this field, and have ideas on some starting steps, but keep in mind that it might be more useful to approach a local professional. Or, at least, asking around for what resources exist in your area. I know that there are a few tumblr posts going around that talk about the world suicide hotlines— Here’s one of them. I’m not entirely certain if all the numbers listed are correct, but that might be another place to start.
So to begin, let’s start by saying that every person experiences depression and anxiety differently. What may motivate one person may damage another person. In order to discuss depression and anxiety, you have to allow yourself to be wrong. You have to be okay with the idea that, no, you will never entirely know what is best for this person in front of you, and that’s okay! This is their life, and they are allowed to make their own choices, even if you believe that they might get help elsewhere. For example: If you believe therapy is more helpful, but the person of interest would prefer antidepressants, then that’s totally alright! That’s the option they want to approach, and while you are allowed to discuss with them the pros and cons of each option, you should never be forcing your view onto them.
A general rule I like to live by is to avoid giving advice entirely. This, of course, isn’t possible 100% of the time, but it’s a good rule of thumb to avoid saying: “You should go to therapy.” when a better alternative might be: “Have you considered going to therapy?” Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be open in asking why they have been avoiding treatments that may help them. Some people may have trauma regarding bad counsellors or side effects of drugs, so them saying “No.” when you try and recommend these options is entirely warranted! You can always suggest options though: “I have heard therapy helps some people, would you be open for looking into that?” Put various options on the table in a non-threatening manner. It’s also a good idea to keep your own biases quiet when discussing someone else’s paths for treatment. Just because you didn’t have a good experience with support groups doesn’t mean you should throw out those options before discussing them with the person in question. You are allowed to explain your hesitancy in using them: “I tried them, and these were some of the downsides…” but do not immediately shut these down as options unless the person of interest says no to them. Keep as many doors open as possible.
If you decide to talk about what others are going through, then they should be the one talking more than you are talking. This does depend on personality factors, but if someone is talking to you about their emotions, you should avoid unloading your own baggage onto them. If someone says “I’m feeling depressed.” and you go off saying “Oh, I know, I’ve been so stressed because of…” then you may be shutting down this person’s motivation to talk (Again, everyone is different, and some people may feel more comfortable knowing that someone else is going through what they are going through). Keep the focus on the other person. Be curious about them. Explore their feelings, thoughts, and motivations. If you do talk about yourself, keep it brief and relevant. Some people just want someone to listen to them, and you might be doing a world of difference just talking to someone rather than throwing a bunch of phone numbers for counsellors and doctors in their face.
An important note to add is that not everyone will want to talk about their situation and what they are going through. If people straight up do not want to talk to you, then it’s likely to be damaging if you try and force yourself on them. For instance, you might be part of the problem, and that’s okay. You doing your best might not be enough, and that’s okay. Keep in mind: this isn’t supposed to be about you, this is supposed to be about the person in need. In these situations, you might want to just mention that you are going to be around to talk if/when they need someone to talk to, and then offer the option of someone else to talk to as well. Offer the suicide hotline, or maybe other mental health groups and services that they might want to reach out to without your help. Do not always assume people need your help. Offer your help at any time, but if they reject it, be prepared to step away while still keeping the door open that you can and will talk with them if they need it in the future.
If you need help talking with people about depression, it might be useful to just scroll around and see what you can find on the internet (or, ideally, some local and reliable sources) about what to say to someone with depression. Everyone is going to have a different vocabulary when speaking about serious topics, and you should explore what you might say in certain situations early. Explore what feels natural to you. For example, I use a lot of empathy, paraphrasing, and probing when I talk with people about these topics. Probing is when you ask for more information, and it can be as simple as “Can you tell me more about that?” to “I heard last week that you went to see a therapist, how did that go?” Try and keep probes non-confrontational, and open-ended (Such as, using words like who, what, where, when, why, and how). Paraphrasing is when you repeat what the other person has said, but in your own words. It’s a way to make sure you’re following in the same way they are telling their story. If someone says “I’m looking for a job, but everything seems to be closing me off; even my friends and family.” you might reply with something like: “Yeah, and so searching for this new job is reminding you of other people who have closed you off.” Empathy is where you look at the core emotions behind a person’s words. Put an emotional label to what they are saying. When someone says “I have been getting terrible grades in school,” something you could reply is “It sounds like you’re discouraged about these grades.” KEEP IN MIND: It’s okay to be wrong! If the other person says: “No, I’m actually frustrated, because I worked really hard and I think the teacher hates me,” then roll with it. Accept it. If the other person rejects how you explained he situation when you paraphrased, roll with it. Ask where it is that you messed up. Try and word it in a different way. There’s no set tactic as to when you use empathy, paraphrasing, and probing at what times. It’s kind of intuition and trial-and-error. Some people are just natural talkative with one line of empathy, whereas others need a diverse range of tactics to actually open up…and that’s okay!
You might feel this way of talking is kind of wooden and unnatural, and it does take some practice to get used to. Keep in mind: Everyone responds to different things differently. If someone is swearing and yelling about how shitty life is, it might not be the best approach to go: “You sound really frustrated right now.” Who knows, it might be better to match their anger with a “Life fucking sucks.” The main point is that, through talking, the main focus is to try and understand what people are going through. For some people, they might want someone to understand their complex emotions. For others, they just want people to listen. Unfortunately, mental health is a complex issue that has no definitive answers.
Long story short, everything really depends on the situation. There is no one-size-fits-all motivational speech that will get everyone out of bed and ready to take on the world in all its horrors. This world is a big bag of shit sometimes, but different people will see different parts of its ugly surface. In the same vein though, different people will see the beauty in different opportunities that simultaneously exist in this life. Dealing with depression might be a serious topic to discuss, but it’s also important that, after you have explored the ugly parts of it, you also take the time to explore what has kept this person going for so long. What has motivated them even though their darkest moments? Some people may not have answers to this question, but some people might. And, really, in order to fully explore someone, one should not only focus on the good or the bad, but a decent mix of both.
**Footnote to repeat that I am not a professional in any sort and these are all just suggestions that MIGHT help. Please continue doing your own research on topics of depression if you decide to take any of this advice.

No Driver’s License: Session 36
No Driver’s License is a Madoka Magica game I’m running for five players, using a homebrew of Yaruki Zero’s Magical Burst system. It follows five magical girls as they deal with an upheaval in the world’s magic system caused by some strange new three-eyed Incubators. They have to figure out what’s going on, who to trust, and how to put a stop to the cycle of despair.
I post session logs and omakes weekly sporadically, both as a reference for the players and for anyone who wants to follow along with the party’s misadventures.
[adventure log- read from the beginning]
[session 35]
Last time on No Driver’s License, the party managed to beat what should be the final combat encounter. They caused Honoka Midarezaki to witch out, leaving behind only Katou Kimiko, and... well, is that going to be enough? Because... Emiko beat Ibara to snagging Kimiko’s Soul Seed, and the situation might demand further defusing.
Tumblr media
So, the big question- are we reviving Kimiko, here?
Tumblr media
Emiko vehemently denies any intention of doing so, but... well, Fumi-chan’s still being a little shit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ibara points out that they’ve got other options on hand, but Tama-chan refuses to do the reviving, too- she intends to just put her on ice and keep her from reviving indefinitely. And... Nishi’s on her side, here. That leaves zero willing Incubators.
Emiko’s in no hurry, though- she’d rather just have everyone here back the fuck off, please.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s more arguing that wants to happen, largely because Emiko and Sakura want to do it- which Ibara is opposed to doing here, now. Yukari and Makoto are more or less behind her, on that count.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emiko ends up agreeing- she would rather not bring Kimiko back to life here, surrounded by enemies and liable to panic and lash out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tama-chan and Nishi try to urge the team to take out Emiko while they have the chance- they sort of haven’t been around for any of the... learning about the cannibals and how they’re maybe redeemable, and just see a chance to put a stop to them. Yukari explains that they want to recruit the cannibals, which... the Incubators are rather surprised by. She explains her plan, but Tama-chan has doubts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in the rocket, Makoto and Sakura are catching Hekima up on the situation with the cannibals. She, like Tama and Nishi, is not convinced recruitment is viable- but for different reasons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sakura explains that they intend to rewire magic itself to not work that way. Her plan for that, though, is pretty ambitious- her step 1 is “use magic to bootstrap a superintelligence, and have that fix magic for us”.
Tumblr media
Answering her questions means looping her in on... the whole Hell Engine thing, and the Devil, and they’re not sure whether to divulge all that right now. An inquiry re: her personal motivations is made, wherein she affirms that all she wants is to survive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sakura only then notices Nishi’s presence, and asks her some questions about hacking the Hell Engine to rewire magic.
Tumblr media
Hekima keeps pushing to be told about their mysterious source of Grief relief, not allowing the subject to be changed. They’re... still not sure if she can be trusted, though.
Tumblr media
Sakura’s ensuing Heart roll is... middling. Hekima doesn’t exactly react angrily to that, but...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back at the ranch- I mean, back on the moon but like a dozen meters away- Yukari and Tama-chan are still going at it over the cannibal plan.
Tumblr media
Ibara tries to get things back on track.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s... good enough for Yukari, who tries to cement that stance. If she can prove they don’t need to eat anyone anymore, will Emiko commit to not doing soul cannibalism?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emiko’s not really ready to commit to anything, and she’s worried everything is a trick, and doesn’t like how Yukari won’t actually explain what the plan is. Ibara tries to put it in plain language, which gets her a little more cooperative.
Tumblr media
Yukari and Ibara describe the Hell Engine and the Devil in... terms vague enough to not give Emiko enough information to fuck with them, but enough to give her something to work with. Emiko’s final stance here is... she isn’t going to just immediately go along with it. She’s going to go home, revive Kimiko, and talk with her and Yoshe as a team about whether this is a good idea, before committing to anything.
That agreed upon, it’s time to go home. Ibara goes and checks on the crew in the perfectly functional rocket ship they have, where they’re still trying to figure out Hekima.
Tumblr media
WELL I SURE HOPE SO
Meanwhile, Yukari has one last thing to do before they take off. She wants to get Orino to shrink down the Hell Engine so it can be made portable- and more importantly, able to be hidden from the cannibals if they find out what it is. Seina helps her track Orino down with the pre-existing telepathy connection they made when they arrived.
Ibara and the others, though, are getting impatient- and Yukari can just teleport home, right?
Tumblr media
So they... sorta take off without her. Sakura rolls a crit on Heart to pilot it home, and Ibara... assists.
Tumblr media
That all goes... mostly well. There are some Things that happen when they land, but let’s resolve Yukari’s quest first:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tama-chan is here chiding her and calling her an idiot, but mainly about the “telling the cannibals about important stuff” thing, and not the issue at hand. Yukari... takes it as kind of a revelation, though.
Tumblr media
Yukari has a whole spiel about how she isn’t sure if Honoka still exists, what that relationship will be like, agonizing over that...
Tumblr media
She goes on for a while about how maybe she’s broken and intrinsically evil and just ought to embrace her destiny as a plotting villain who doesn’t care about other peoples’ feelings. Tama-chan sort of ineffectually tries to derail that.
Tumblr media
Yukari eventually comes down from her self-loathing high, and decides against pressuring Orino further. Tama-chan still isn’t happy about the cannibal plan, but acknowledges that she can’t really stop it, and vanishes. (By “vanishes”, I mean she self-destructs the Kyubey she’s piloting, and auto-recalls her gem to her base, but same deal plus some gold rings for Yukari.)
Meanwhile, on the way to Earth, some stuff happens. First, Makoto gets in contact with a friend:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before I can show you what happens when they land, though, I need to rewind to a non-player omake that happened simultaneous with the session.
Rather than paste the whole thing: Olivia Gumm is in the bunker, working on her manga. She’s mostly on track to meet her deadline, but then Takamine Mitsuki shows up, and starts to ask questions. Olivia draws a fantasy yuri manga which is supposed to be all-ages, but she’s not sure if the Takamines are traditionalists and isn’t sure whether to explain it to Mitsuki.
Tumblr media
Mitsuki turns out to be pretty open-minded when Olivia starts explaining, and from what she says about what her parents have said about the subject, Olivia won’t get in trouble for corrupting their daughter or anything. Mitsuki eventually runs off to ask her mom more about “homerphobia”, and- whoops, then Olivia breaks her pen.
Meanwhile, with Ibara’s delinquent buddies...
Tumblr media
After some arguing over whether they’re going to go investigate, settled by Ibara’s sister Nano threatening to sic Ibara on them if they don’t quit making a ruckus, they go and find the source of the knocking.
Tumblr media
The delinquents push past the barricade, ignoring Olivia’s horror at having broken Reiko’s rules, and find... no one. She’s missing. (She’s been kidnapped to the moon by the Devil.) Shibu fires off some texts to Ibara:
Tumblr media
So, that’s what happened while they were gone. As they re-enter the atmosphere and regain cell reception, Ibara gets those texts.
Sakura lands the rocket in the Gyoen National Garden, the park where Reiko’s bunker is hidden. The thing’s decked out in Somebody Else’s Problem amulets, so they’re fine muggle-wise. Ibara heads down to check in on Reiko and the bunker inhabitants.
Tumblr media
As it turns out, Shibu was able to keep Nails from contracting, despite Nails being extremely excited to be told that she has magical potential and could contract. So, that’s a bullet(?) dodged, at least. Everything down in the bunker seems pretty much fine.
Seina also heads down there- with Cho clinging to her arm, in front of her parents, an embarrassing situation that will be addressed in a couple sessions.
After checking on the bunker folk, Sakura is the first to head upstairs and outside, where she meets...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sakura has... a bit of a breakdown, worrying about her purified trauma tracks. She’s worried about a feeling like life is pointless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sheesh, Hekima.)
Sakura ends up asking Hekima to take a look inside her head, see if she can find out what witching did to her. Hekima is totally up for it, it seems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They spend a while psychoanalyzing her, through Hekima’s maybe-not-super-reliable lens of pulling on true and false statements and guessing about the underlying neurology. Hekima’s verdict is that Sakura is just... very susceptible to emotional manipulation, prone to mood swings and wild behavior in response to minor stimuli. Hekima, as an old-school magical girl, is more than happy to catalogue her mental weaknesses.
And then... well, Hekima has her mancatcher around Sakura’s neck, and the thing to remember is that this sort of exploratory brain imaging stuff is not the primary function of the ability. The primary function of the ability is to forcibly read someone’s mind. When Sakura says she’s done and asks to be released...
Tumblr media
They make contested rolls, and it’s close, but Hekima barely beats her.
Tumblr media
(The ability description was cribbed from an unused character sheet Farn made, which I decided to remix a bit to make Hekima.)
So, the result of that is...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She tries to say “I can’t tell you that”, but fails, because that’s a lie- she can tell her that, she just won’t. Instead, she continues on the obfuscation tack.
Tumblr media
Then Sakura tries to punch her, but fails her roll.
Tumblr media
So... that’s not ominous.
Next time on No Driver’s License: Sakura and Yukari have a heart-to-heart over some curry, and Makoto pays a visit to the cannibals to see how their team discussion has been going. I’m sure this will all wrap up super-neatly.

Biden administration winds down Trump's pandemic food box program It’s one of many emergency federal aid programs that the government must decide how to wind down in a way that doesn’t create more problems for those still in need — and some, including New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, the new chairman of the Senate nutrition subcommittee, are calling on the government to keep a version of the food box program permanent to ensure needy families can get deliveries of fresh fruits and vegetables. The $4 trillion in federal aid pumped into US economy over the past year has helped it bounce back, but the recovery has been uneven and is still far from complete. The nation is still down 8 million jobs compared to its pre-pandemic level. While the recession has nearly ended for high-wage workers, the unemployment rate for those earning less than $27,000 a year remains stubbornly high at nearly 28%, according a project at Harvard University tracking the recovery called Opportunity Insights. Many families continue to struggle to put food on the table. As of March, nearly 9% of adults lived in households that sometimes or often didn’t have enough to eat — a share several times larger than at any point in 2019, according to the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Over the past year, the Capital Area Food Bank based in Washington, DC, helped deliver more than 1 million of the food boxes to families, making up nearly one-third of the meals it provided during the pandemic. The agency said it hopes the deliveries, known as Farmers to Families Food Box, will survive in some form even after the pandemic program ends this month. “For our clients, the recovery is a long and slow one,” said Radha Muthiah, Capital Area Food Bank’s president and CEO. “The most important thing is to provide good, nutritious food for them and we certainly still need USDA as a partner.” A ‘revolutionary’ program The Farmers to Families Food Box program spent about $5 billion over the past year to hire private distributors that connected farmers with food banks and other non-profits trying to meet the increased need from hungry families. There were some early concerns about the types of companies the USDA contracted with, including a Texas-based event scheduler, that had little experience distributing food. But despite the initial criticism, the program became quite popular. In the run-up to the election, former President Donald Trump required that the boxes include a letter from him touting the benefit. His daughter and adviser, Ivanka Trump, appeared helping to hand out the boxes at several press events. It helped farmers sell their produce after supply chains were disrupted by the sudden closures of restaurants and schools. And it helped food banks and nonprofits that suddenly faced an explosion in demand and a simultaneous drop-off in donations. The Farmers to Families Food Box program was brand new, created by the USDA last April using funds provided by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. While the USDA has an existing program that purchases surplus commodities to send to food banks, the initiative focused on fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy and combined it all into one box. USDA has released five rounds of funding for the program over the past year, using money from two subsequent Covid relief bills. “This was revolutionary for USDA to actually be able to purchase and distribute everything so quickly,” said Emily Broad Lieb, Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Food Law and Policy Clinic at Harvard Law School. A report she helped write on the program found that many farmers and distributors were pleased, yet offered recommendations to make the distribution more equitable, help more small- and mid-sized farmers and reduce food waste. Sometimes food banks had to unpack the combo boxes in order to keep dairy and meat refrigerated and then repack them again. The price per box varied widely in the range of $40 to $100, when much of it could be bought for $20 at a grocery store, according to the report. USDA says the average price of a box fluctuated from as low as $28 to as high as $105. A new pandemic problem: How to wind down emergency aid In a statement, the USDA said the Farmers to Families program was meant to be a temporary effort to respond to severe market disruption caused by the pandemic. “It served that purpose, although with serious challenges, and now we must make sure people are getting access to food through other, more reliable channels,” it said. Meanwhile, separate food aid programs have been expanded by Congress, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, and another program targeting women and children. Democrats are also pushing to make other new benefits for the poor permanent, like the expanded child tax credit, paid leave and the universal free school lunch program. Relief programs like the direct stimulus payments to low-income Americans also have helped drive down the percentage of Americans struggling with hunger this year. The agency has also started to offer a similar fresh produce box on a temporary basis through the The Emergency Food Assistance Program that existed before the pandemic. Normally that program allows state food banks to put in orders for produce months ahead of time and the USDA buys the food. But the goods are usually processed or packaged. The new boxes will contain fresh fruit and vegetables. The Emergency Food Assistance Program would have been a better way to implement the emergency aid to being with, said Joseph Glauber, a Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute and former USDA economist. Instead, USDA was trying to address both the supply chain problem hurting farmers and the growing need from hungry families. “The idea was laudable. But I think it is a mistake to try to address farm-level problems with an emergency food program. I think the fundamental goal should be to provide good food at the lowest cost possible so that you can feed the most people,” Glauber said. Farmers also received about $16 billion in direct relief aid from the federal government. While the major supply chain problems have been resolved, they’re not back to normal. Many restaurants and office buildings remain closed or operating at less than full capacity. “People are still as eager to be involved on the distributor side,” said Melissa Ackerman, president of the Produce Alliance, a nationwide produce distributor that was contracted by USDA to deliver the boxes in several states. She said that the agency tweaked the rules several times over the past year, improving the program each round. “I think a step-down approach to ending the program would have been helpful,” Ackerman said. How to Select a Real Estate Agent
Tumblr media
Purchasing a house, for the huge majority of people, is the single largest financial decision made in their own lives. Certainly, then, it becomes evident that the choice of a realtor is a significant consideration which shouldn't be taken lightly. However, what factors should be considered in the choice of a realtor?
Reputation
Not all real estate agents are the same. Some realtors have a reputation for being hard to work with. By way of example, an agent that's pushy, argumentative, unprofessional, is late for appointments, or misses deadlines can frustrate the purchasing procedure. A realtor needs to have a reputation for getting along well with all parties to a trade, buyers and sellers included. A broker that takes a lawyer-like approach of zealous advocacy for one side in a property transaction induce the other side to walk away from the offer. Communication and"people" skills are important, in addition to diplomacy and tact in the event a challenging situation should arise. And obviously, honesty is tantamount.
Communication skills involve more than simply communicating information - actually, the principal evaluation of effective communication skills is the ability to listen.
Ascertaing the standing of a real estate agent requires some detective work. It's prudent to ask for references, on each side of the transaction. Talking to both buyers and sellers about their experience in dealing with a specific agent can provide insight regarding how you can expect your real estate experience to unfold.
Geographical Area of Expertise
It's important as well to make certain that you're dealing with a realtor who's a"neighborhood specialist". Many nations technically allow licensed real estate brokers to take part in real estate transactions anywhere within the state. But a local specialist will be knowledgeable about local selling practices. As an example, property transfer taxes vary by area, as do the party responsible for paying them. In some places, there can be different habits for the branch of county and city property transfer taxes. You want to make certain you are dealing with a broker familiar in local custom in order to avoid paying unnecessary fees.
1 idea would be to canvass the areas in which you're contemplating buying. If you see a great deal of lawn signs for a specific agent in those areas, it's a great bet that the broker is a local specialist.
An area specialist will also have the ability to supply you information on colleges, recreation, churches and synagogues, shopping and entertainment options in the region.
How to Select a Realtor
Word of mouth is usually the very best and most reliable source of information regarding any specific real estate agent. This sort of information is reliable since it hasn't been"spun" by the broker and the origin of the information has no specific motivation one way or another, except to relate their experiences.
Make certain to interview more than one agent. Before conducting a broker interview, make a list of things which are important to you. These things may include proximity to freeways or commuter rail lines, style of home, age of home, proximity to schools, local tax rates, or some other number of things. Additionally, you might be interested to discover whether the property agent has support staff that will help in the handling of various aspects of trades. Additionally, creating a list of those priorities will assist your broker in finding the perfect home for your loved ones.
Ask the real estate agent you're thinking about for referrals to other real estate brokers that you interview. An agent that's secure in their quality of service and standing will not have any hesitation to offer you the names of competing brokers for you to look at. An agent that offers this information to you is probably a broker with whom you would need to conduct business.
Other things to consider are whether real estate is the broker's full time profession, the amount of years of experience the real estate agent has, and any property designations owned by the agent.
Real Estate Agents - What Sellers and Buyers Should Know About Them
For many buyers and sellers the possibility of handling a real estate broker brings forth unknown fears. When some brokers are real and reliable and consider their customers best interest as their top priority, there's absolutely no dearth of unscrupulous people either who are only trying. As a buyer or sellers of a house, it's your responsibility to choose a estate agent sensibly. So, here's a look at what you ought to know about real estate agents before you approach one.
What does a real estate agent do?
When working on behalf of the seller, the broker is responsible for placing the particulars of a house in the multiple listing services of the region and undertaking other.
In the event of a residential property, a realtor may start off by putting up the details of the property on his personal or business website based on whether he's part of a realtor or functions on his own. The next step is to advertise the property through postcards and advertisements in real estate magazines offline in addition to online.
Besides marketing the house, the agent who lists your home is also responsible for following up with other agents that have clients that might have expressed interest in the house. An agent is also supposed to help you negotiate the best price possible. He/She is with you every step of the way until the residence is sold; advising you on all matters including procuring the assistance of a lawyer.
The broker does not charge the client/home vendor for his marketing efforts Nonetheless, you will have to incur any legal cost involved in the selling process
When working from the seller's side, a realtor accounts for rummaging through the property listings of a place that his client is considering. He coordinates with the real estate agent managing the property on behalf of the vendor and also arranges to show the premises to his customers. A realtor from the buyer's side also will help to negotiate the best deal for his client and is with the buyer through out the buying procedure. He's also responsible for approaching an expert to get a property evaluation completed. Some realtors may also provide other services such as advice and help for procuring home loans.
Real estate brokers not only earn commission from the sale and purchase of houses but also when a property is leased. Normally the commission is paid to the realtor at the last settlement of the offer.
Who should you decide to be your estate agent?
Real estate agent can don three mantles that of an intermediary on behalf of the vendor, the purchaser or a double agent. When buying a home, it would be best to employ the services of a realtor who will work in your side, the same holds true when buying house as well; you'd be better of coming a realtor who works for sellers.
Although realtors working in the sellers or the purchaser's side don't have different qualifications, some agents decide to play on a single turf while double agents may work for both the vendor and the buyer simultaneously earning commissions from both.
So, as a buyer if you should request the seller's representative if his client would take a greater deal, he is going to be obligated not to disclose this information for you.
The Buyers Real Estate Agent: Likewise agents working on behalf of the vendor owe their obligation to their customers and will attempt to get their customers the maximum deal possible. So, they won't be ready to provide information on how low their customer will go in relation to the purchase price.
A double agent: A double agent is obligated to maintain the fair picture in front of the two parties; because he's entitled to a commission from both parties, he owes.
Most real estate agents have a list of buyers in addition to sellers so it's not uncommon for an agent to work on behalf of both parties or get another broker from his property company to negotiate on behalf of the vendor or the purchaser.
The problem with Realtors
While realtors are in the business of marketing properties, it's not unusual for them to play up their qualifications; after all, it's a dog eat dog world and there's certainly no dearth of realtors on the market. Although this is acceptable, some people resort to lying blatantly about their achievements and frequently their clients wind up paying for their tall claims.
So, be certain you check all of the claims which are being made by a possible estate agent. Don't be afraid to ask for references. If he hasn't mentioned his experience in the booklet, make it a point to inquire about it. Also, ask about other properties he might have sold which were like the one which you wish to sell/buy; this could include properties in the sane area, of the identical size and budget.
Finding a good and reliable broker can save you a great deal of trouble when hanging out with the wrong man can quickly become a nightmare so take your time when choosing an agent to buy/sell your dwelling.

Content last updated December 2020. Roadmap corresponds to Spring ‘21 projections. Our forward-looking statement applies to roadmap projections. Guide Overview You want to customize Salesforce. It may be something simple, like adding a field; or maybe it is much more complex, like a custom application with dozens of objects and thousands of lines of code. How do you deploy into production? The answer, of course, is “it depends". The method you choose for moving a change into production will depend on many factors, including the urgency of the change, its complexity, the size of your team, and the metadata involved. This decision guide explores seven different deployment options, ranging from simple but not-so-scalable techniques to significantly more complex yet highly scalable approaches: Manual Changes in Production Change Sets Metadata API: Direct Deployments Metadata API: Deployment with Source Control + Continuous Integration Org Dependent Packages Unlocked Packaged Managed Packages For each option, we discuss the limitations of the approach, why you might choose it, why you might not, and (where appropriate) how to mitigate some of its potential downsides. This guide also covers some hurdles you may encounter as you begin using the more complex techniques, deploying changes other than metadata, the various Salesforce environments involved in moving changes to production, an example deployment that combines multiple approaches, and third-party tooling you can use. You can read this guide straight through, or just jump to the parts that you need. If you do decide to skip around, we’ve summarized the key points that you’ll want to take away with you no matter what: Takeaway #1: The options available to you for deploying changes exist on a spectrum, and each has its own pros, cons, and limitations. In choosing which option to use for a specific deployment, you’ll need to weigh your objectives, your team’s skills, and limitations in Salesforce. You may use different approaches for different projects, or even blend approaches on a single project. Takeaway #2: Salesforce is investing heavily in improving this experience, so change is happening quickly. Stay up to date on roadmaps and report issues. Takeaway #3: Don’t think of deployments only in terms of metadata — often, other items must change in an org for a deployment to be complete. Takeaway #4: Don’t use first-generation managed packages. Takeaway #5: Prefer permission sets over profiles. This guide focuses on moving changes between environments with the goal of eventually deploying to a production environment you control. In other words, if you’re a customer or developing changes on behalf of a customer, then this guide is for you. If you are an ISV or AppExchange partner who is building assets for multicustomer or AppExchange distribution, then you should follow the documentation for second-generation managed packages. Deployment Techniques, from Simplest to Most Scalable First, let’s get familiar with the deployment options and the technology behind them. Manual Change Sets Metadata Deployments Packages Direct Single Source Org-Dependent1 Unlocked Managed Deletion Manual Not Available Manual, Scripted Manual, Scripted Built-In Built-In Built-In Apex Changes Not Available Available Available Available Available Available Available Reversion Manual Not Available Manual Manual Built-In Built-In Built-In Scratch Org Support Supported Not Available Supported Supported Supported Supported2 Supported2 Sandbox Support Supported Required Supported Supported Supported Supported Supported Dependencies Any Any Any Any Any Packaged3 Packaged3 Repeatability Low Low Medium High High High High Delay None Medium None None Medium Long4 Long4 1 Org-dependent packages are Beta in Winter '21 release. 2 Even if you don’t use a scratch org to create your package, it must be able to deploy to a scratch org or package creation will fail. 3 Every dependency must either be in the package or in another package. 4 You can skip validation on package version creation to reduce package build time via a flag on the command. These options exist on a spectrum: As you move from left to right on the spectrum, you: give up some simplicity but gain more scalability move into areas of the platform that are changing faster increase the level of technical skill required spend more time on the process than the product encounter barriers to further motion rightward on the spectrum For the purposes of this document, scalability means support for: larger deployments of more changes more teams or larger teams working on more projects simultaneously more testing and automation enabling more frequent deployments more consistent and reliable deployments Manual Changes in Production Deletion Apex Changes Reversion Scratch Org Support Sandbox Dependencies Repeatability Delay Manual Changes in Production Manual Not Available Manual -- -- Any Low None The simplest option for deploying to production is to make a manual change, directly in production. Yes, some of you just had a panic attack. But hear us out. Limitations of Manual Changes You cannot modify Apex code in production. You must write Apex somewhere else and migrate it to production. If your project involves only Apex, then move along, this is not the option you’re looking for. Why You Might Choose Manual Changes For some metadata types, it’s the only supported option. For some metadata types, it’s a reasonable, low-risk enabler of business agility; for example: Reports are a metadata type. You might even be deploying folders of reports that are used on a Lightning page or really important reports used on your operational dashboard. But you may also encourage users to modify reports in their own private folders without going through any sort of deployment process. Many orgs treat ListViews similarly. For small changes, it’s very fast: You may need to make an emergency change to turn off a validation rule, even if you deployed it via a more complex technique to the right on the spectrum. You need to give someone permission to do something temporarily, or figure out what’s wrong with the permissions. In this case, an admin can create a new permission set, assign it to a user, get the work handled, and then remove and delete that permission. It’s convenient if you’re doing a first-time set up of Salesforce before go-live, when the exposure is lower and you have a serious testing plan in place before users get access to the system. You enjoy similar high-risk activities like free-climbing and fielding unexpected calls from executives. Why You Wouldn't Choose Manual Changes Many types of changes can be extremely dangerous. That simple validation rule where you accidentally used instead of < can bring your company to a halt. Even worse, your automation might accidentally email customers and create a PR mess. Production changes can be difficult to test. The data in your org is your real data, so an automated testing process can do a lot of damage that is hard to reverse. Even if you have a backup, you’re going to have a lot of work to clean it up. And even if everything goes well, you’re still finding and cleaning up records like “TestOpportunity15”. It’s difficult to scale for a team. People are working on top of each other. If you’ve got someone working on Service and someone else on Sales, but both of them are changing the Contact object, there’s potential for some conflicts. It’s harder to reverse or abandon changes. Imagine you’ve updated your application, and let your users try it out. They give you some feedback and you realize it’s completely the wrong approach. Before you can create your new version, you have to get rid of the old version, backing out each change you made in the correct order. It’s difficult to deploy large, complex changes while people are on the system. If your change includes adding three new fields, plus layout changes, plus validation rules, plus changes to several existing Flows based on the new fields, plus permissions, then there will be some point in time where your change is only partially deployed. Users might be entering data without validation, or without the proper processes running. You either have to lock them out or work unusual hours. You’re now working under a time crunch and trying not to make a mistake. Mitigation for Risks You May Face with Manual Changes If you have changes that can only be done manually, then you can verify them by first completing the steps to make the changes in a sandbox, testing the results, and then repeating the same series of steps in production. For example, Prediction Builder currently (Winter ‘21) doesn’t support any sort of deployments other than manual. Prediction Builder lets you configure a model and look at its accuracy. You can tweak the model until you’re happy with it. But eventually, you’ll have Einstein start writing predictions to fields, and you may start using those fields for process automation. Before that starts, you might want to test how it works in a sandbox. Once you’ve done that, you do have to create and enable the model again in production (for example, with production on one monitor, sandbox on the other, carefully making them match). This approach is not foolproof, but at least when you move to production, you’ll sleep more soundly. Change Sets Deletion Apex Changes Reversion Scratch Org Support Sandbox Dependencies Repeatability Delay Change Sets Manual Supported Not Available Supported Supported Any Low Medium Change sets are a point-and-click way to move changes. They let you choose which items to move, with a checkbox for each field, object, layout, class, and so on. The org admins can decide which environment can send and receive changes sets from other environments via deployment connections. For example, consider the following scenario: Three orgs exist: Dev (a developer sandbox), QA (a full sandbox), and Production Dev sends changes to QA and receives changes from Production QA can send changes to Production Production can send changes to Dev and can only receive changes from QA Once you make your selections with all those checkboxes, you “upload” them to an allowed destination org. Some time later, the change set appears in Inbound Change Sets in the destination org and you can deploy or validate the change set. Limitations of Change Sets Change sets can only work with sandboxes, and all the sandboxes have to be created from the production org. You can click the View/Add Dependencies button to find dependencies, but it may not catch everything. (For example, you may have an Apex Class that doesn’t have a formal dependency on its test class, but you generally do have to have test coverage so a certain change set will fail to deploy if you don’t include the tests.) You’re limited to 10,000 files (items represented by a checkbox). Sometimes, a sandbox is on a different release than the destination org. When that happens, some metadata types can’t be deployed because they’ve changed between releases and you have to either spin up a new sandbox on the correct version or wait until the orgs are on the same version. Change sets can’t remove any metadata or configuration. Why You Might Choose Change Sets It has existed for a long time, so it’s well-known by most everyone. It is admin-friendly (it requires no local tools, code, or terminal commands). Unlike changes performed manually, all the changes hit production simultaneously. You can validate that a deployment would deploy while everyone is using the system on Friday, but actually deploy the change during off-hours. If your change fails to deploy or validate, you can clone the change set and add what you left out. If you’ve made one of those “emergency” changes in production, change sets can also send the change to sandboxes. Deployment connections provide good control over how changes move through environments. Permissions control who can create and deploy change sets. Why You Wouldn't Choose Change Sets As you’re building, you have to track your changes. People who have been doing this for a long time have elaborate spreadsheet templates so that when it’s time to upload a change set, they know everything that needs to go in it. If you move a change set from Dev to QA and want to move it from QA to Production, you need to create another one — with all those checkboxes again. Not every metadata type is supported. See link API Support for details. The delay between when you upload a change set and when it arrives and becomes deployable in production is indeterminate. Sometimes it’s a minute, sometimes it’s an hour. And there’s no real way to know when it’s going to arrive. Once it arrives, sometimes deploying will result in a message that it’s not ready yet. Moving from Change Sets to Metadata Deployments If your team has been using change sets, but is considering moving to source-based deployments, there is an option to retrieve change sets via the Salesforce CLI. This enables you to create a change set from your sandbox. Then a CLI user or a script can retrieve the change set by name using the CLI retrieve command and extract the source (give the command the change set name as the package name). In this case, you’re not really using change sets for deployment, but are using them to extract source to enable a deployment technique further to the right. Metadata API: Direct Deployments Deletion Apex Changes Reversion Scratch Org Support Sandbox Dependencies Repeatability Delay Metadata: Direct Deployments Manual, Scriptable Supported Manual Supported Supported Any Medium None The Salesforce Metadata API lets you migrate metadata. Few people use it directly — if your process has been around for a long time, you may have used Ant scripts. More recently, the Salesforce CLI and Salesforce Extensions for Visual Studio Code and many other tools make use of the metadata API to retrieve and deploy metadata. Scenarios here include a developer retrieving metadata from a sandbox, making changes on their machine, and deploying it back to production. You can also perform deployments that look like, “take the metadata described in this package.xml(the traditional Salesforce manifest file) and move it from QA to Production.” In metadata-based deployments, you’re adding or modifying only what’s specified. The deployment doesn’t delete or change any files that are omitted. Limitations of Direct Metadata Deploys Similar to change sets, only 10,000 files are allowed per transaction. The total unzipped size of the files cannot exceed 400MB. The Metadata API doesn’t support all metadata types (see API Support). Why You Might Choose Direct Metadata Deploys The deployment is repeatable. Each deployment of the same set of files should result in the same state. It’s also easy to repeat the same deployment to multiple targets (e.g. QA, then production) You can specify deletions. The Metadata API includes support for destructive changes — you can specify metadata that should not exist in the target and remove components as the new metadata is deployed. You can deploy settings. Imagine you need to deploy something that you haven’t activated in production (for example, a chatbot or path). Within the Metadata API there are also Settings types that represent actions you would normally do manually in the Setup UI. Scriptability. Later, we’ll discuss items that need to deploy with your metadata. You can create repeatable deployment scripts to make sure these items are in the proper state before and/or after the deployment. Why You Wouldn't Choose Direct Metadata Deploys It’s hard to trace. Metadata deployed from someone’s local filesystem looks just like metadata modified in production. And it’s difficult to trace back what was part of the deployment if you need to reverse something. It’s hard to control. If multiple developers can deploy changes to production, they may deploy over each other’s versions. Also, your policy may say they should test before deploying, but they may not. Mitigations for Risks You Might Face with Direct Metadata Deploys Companies tend to have a single person who has access to make these deployments (e.g. a “Release Manager”). While this helps ensure control, it can become a bottleneck. Metadata API: Deployment with Source Control and Continuous Integration Deletion Apex Changes Reversion Scratch Org Support Sandbox Dependencies Repeatability Delay Metadata: With Source Control Manual, Scriptable Supported Manual Supported Supported Any Medium None Most developers are comfortable working with a source control system (also referred to as a version control system or VCS), like git. Such systems have all sorts of useful features (like branches, pull requests, diffs, file history, and more). Source tracking is a solved problem with high-quality tooling outside of Salesforce, and we recommend using it. Back to deployments — the idea here is to use source repository branches as the source for a deployment. Developers are prohibited from deploying source directly beyond their dev environment; only by merging into a branch does their code deploy anywhere else. Typically, these branch merges are deployed by a system (e.g. CI) rather than a person. The steps are: Get the source from the repo Authenticate to the org Deploy Because the Metadata API and CLI are available, you’re free to use the tools you prefer. For example, GitHub acts as a source control system but also handles things like code review, and GitHub actions support automation based on events (like merging a branch). When you begin using this deployment option, you may find yourself facing some challenging questions. What do my repos look like? Am I always deploying the whole thing, or is there some subset of metadata? Do I have one repo with one directory, multiple package directories in a single repo, or multiple repos? Multiple projects within a larger monorepo? How do I express and control dependencies between them? This challenge is not exclusive to this method; you’ll be addressing the same questions when you begin moving to packages. There’s some preliminary discussion about modularization on the Developer blog, but it’s a few years old. In particular, it doesn’t account for some newer options like Org-Dependent Packages that help with this problem, and the CLI is now much better at working with multiple source directories within a single project. Limitations of Metadata Deploys with Source Control See Limitations of Direct Metadata Deploys. Why You Might Choose Metadata Deploys with Source Control Source control is a solved problem. Many companies have built high-quality tooling for source control and CI. Developers know it. This is the default operating model for developers outside of Salesforce. Source control supports automation. Deploy from GitHub Actions or have your CI system subscribed to webhooks to take those actions. Besides just deployments, this allows testing automation, code analysis, and linter/styling to check pull requests. Scales better for larger teams. You can use multiple repos to break up the codebase. Developers are merging in source control and not into the org; they know when they are conflicting with changes they don’t have. Imagine you’ve got several internal teams plus various contractors and multiple SIs working on Salesforce-related projects. The reduced finger-pointing alone is a good reason to keep them from directly changing the org. Branches help multiple projects happen simultaneously. Even on a small team, you may have a simultaneous mix of small features, emergencies, release checks, bug fixes, experiments, and large projects. Keeping them organized helps your team work faster. Feature branches allow for partial deployments. Imagine two features merged into the final QA environment. Users are good with the first but don’t like the second. You can merge the first feature into main and deploy it to production while the second gets some more attention. Why You Wouldn't Choose Metadata Deploys with Source Control Your team’s customizations largely consist of metadata types that don’t deploy well. Source control is unknown territory for your team. Perhaps you have mostly Salesforce Admins or “Adminelopers” (who write some code but don’t come from a traditional developer background), or you have seasoned Salesforce developers who’ve worked exclusively on the platform. This type of process may be difficult for them to adapt to quickly. See People and Skills for mitigations. Your company’s releases are usually large and infrequent. You’re not able to invest the time setting up this kind of tooling. Sometimes people see the value here but can’t have a team off of “primary tasks” during implementation of the new process. Interlude on Packages The next three deployment techniques dive into Second-Generation Packages. Background on Packaging Salesforce has used packages since the launch of AppExchange, and most admins are familiar with installing managed packages into their orgs. First-generation managed packages were designed primarily for this ISV use case. Managed packages are very restrictive; once you release a package, there are many changes that are no longer allowed because the developer can’t know what a customer org may have built dependencies on. There were also some customers using unmanaged packages, which were impossible to upgrade. We recommend not using at first-generation managed packages, also called Classic Packaging, at all. If you’re not an ISV currently using them, you have no reason to start now. Second-generation packages are where it’s at: managed packages primarily for ISVs and unlocked packages primarily for customers. Second-generation packages are created from source, and not from the contents of an org. The naming of the various kinds of packages can be confusing and hasn’t been consistent over time. In this guide, unless we’re speaking of first-generation managed packages, we’ll drop the “generation” label and refer to packages as unlocked or managed. Note: This also follows the naming you'll see used in the Metadata Coverage Report, as well. Package Basics The idea of a package is to have a subset of metadata that is versioned. You can upgrade to a newer version of a package, or in some scenarios revert to the previous version. You can cleanly uninstall a package without having to know everything that was in it. You can remove some metadata from a package, and when the package is installed, the metadata is removed from the org. Packages can be built on top of other packages and have explicitly declared dependencies. Packages make it easy to share code across multiple orgs. Controls Packages also offer some deployment controls. When you create a package version, the version begins in Beta status. You can install the package in scratch orgs and sandboxes, but not in a production org. To deploy in production, you must first promote a package to released status. By controlling that phase, packages enable easy distribution for testing but a formal, controlled release. How code becomes a package Specify a folder of source code that you want to become the package. Create a package using the CLI. This package is owned by a Dev Hub. Create a version of that package. This is a snapshot of source code at a point in time. The packaging process and the strictness of its requirements depend on which type of package you’re using. The next three sections describe package types. Org-Dependent Packages Deletion Apex Changes Reversion Scratch Org Support Sandbox Dependencies Repeatability Delay Org-Dependent Packages Supported Supported Supported Supported Supported Any High Medium Org-dependent packages are technically unlocked packages with a special flag (—skipvalidation) during creation. They allow dependencies outside of the package that aren’t in another package — in other words, they depend on something in your org. For example, let’s say you’re building a package that includes a Flow, and that Flow refers to a custom notification type (NotificationTypeConfig). That metadata type is supported in the Metadata API as of Winter ’21 but it can’t be packaged. When you review the Metadata Coverage report, keep in mind that org-dependent packages are unlocked packages. The supported types will be the same. An org-dependent package lets you package your Flow and optimistically assume that the Custom Notification Type will be present in the destination org. It’ll throw an error on installation if that Custom Notification Type is not present. You’ll want to use a sandbox that supports source tracking so that it contains all the metadata you might depend on that’s outside the package your changes are tracked, enabling you to pull them into source control Limitations of Org-Dependent Packages Org-dependent packages are currently Beta, with plans to be GA Spring ‘21. Other packages cannot depend on an org-dependent package. Org-dependent packages can’t depend on other packages (to be more specific, Salesforce won’t check that dependency). Why You Might Choose Org-Dependent Packages You want to create a package that depends on something without packaging support. You have some metadata in the org that isn’t ready to be packaged. For example, it has some tangled circular dependency that makes that process difficult. You want some of the benefits of packaging but don’t control the metadata you depend on (for example, it’s owned by another team at your company, or an AppExchange app). You want some of the benefits of packaging but you can’t modularize your existing metadata. You can deploy over existing unpackaged metadata. For example, let’s say your current org has Whatever__c deployed to it. If you deploy a package that includes Whatever__c, then that metadata will be recognized within the org as being part of the package from then on regardless of how it was originally deployed. You are unable to create a scratch org that supports the contents of your package, even if it has no external dependencies. Because org-dependent packages skip the step that validates packages in a scratch org, you can use them to work around this limitation. Why You Wouldn't Choose Org-Dependent Packages If your package can include/declare all of its dependencies, prefer an unlocked package. You’ll avoid surprise deploy-time errors. You want to be able to deploy the package to a scratch org. For example, you have automatic CI testing using scratch orgs. The org-dependent package has to go to some type of sandbox where the dependency is met, which can take much longer to create and cannot be destroyed immediately. All packages take significant time to create, release, and install. Unlocked Packages Deletion Apex Changes Reversion Scratch Org Support Sandbox Dependencies Repeatability Delay Unlocked Packages Supported Supported Supported Supported Supported Packaged High Long If you’re a customer using packages, unlocked packages should be your primary deployment option. Unlike org-dependent packages, unlocked packages have all dependencies either inside the package or inside another package explicitly declared in the package’s dependencies Unlocked means simply, “allows changes not via the packaging process.” For example, imagine you’ve packaged a formula field that’s causing problems. An unlocked package allows you to modify the formula in production! You can put out the fire immediately. But next time you deploy the package, whatever is in the source will deploy over any changes made in production; that is, whatever is in the package wins. The only way to make a permanent change is to remember to update the formula in the package so that subsequent deployments include the fix. Limitations of Unlocked Packages You cannot have unpackaged external dependencies. Everything down the dependency graph must be packageable, packaged, and in the dependencies manifest. You must be able to configure a scratch org to support everything your package requires. Let’s say your package depends on PersonAccounts. That’s OK, because that’s a feature that can be configured in a scratch org. Underneath the covers, the packaging process deploys your source into a scratch org with a given configuration to build your package. 75% minimum Apex test coverage. If you worked with or read about unlocked packages prior to Winter ‘21, you know that Salesforce added code coverage requirements. Tests will run as part of the packaging process, so you can’t rely on the target environment. Why You Would Choose Unlocked Packages It offers a known, good state of your metadata. You know the exact state of metadata at any point in time. The org has a record of package version deployments, and packages are linked to source control. The package can be deployed to a scratch org for testing. You can revert to a previous version. Similar to org-dependent unlocked packages, you can deploy over unpackaged metadata. Why You Wouldn't Choose Unlocked Packages Production changes are overwritten by new package deployments. If you find yourself frequently making production fixes within a package, and not getting those back into the package source, you’ll be unhappy with your deployments re-breaking those patches. You’ll want to create some process for tracking in-production changes to make sure they work their way back through your normal packaging process. Packages have formal ancestry requirements, so large refactorings can lead to situations where you can’t upgrade. This may take developers some experience to get used to. All packages take significant time to create, release, and install. Salesforce previously announced a concept of locked packages, which were less strict about changes than managed, but didn’t allow manual changes in the org. This has been deprioritized. Mitigations for Risks You Might Face with Unlocked Packages For packages intended for non-production environments, you can skip the package validation step. This speeds up the packaging process so you can deploy and get test results sooner. If you’re using automated tests and frequent builds, this can be useful. You’ll still eventually need to validate the package and promote it before you deploy it to production. Managed Packages Deletion Apex Changes Reversion Scratch Org Support Sandbox Dependencies Repeatability Delay Unlocked Packages Supported Supported Supported Supported Supported Packaged High Long The workflow for this option is the same as Unlocked Packages, so that diagram is omitted here. Managed packages have more limitations than unlocked packages. They’re normally used by AppExchange partners who want to prevent customers from creating dependencies on code or components that aren’t designed to be depended on. Limitations of Managed Packages Once you expose something, it’s difficult to delete it (packaging assumes there may be dependencies you don’t know about). You’ll need a namespace associated to your Dev Hub, and anything referring to the package’s code will need to use that namespace in the reference. Why You Might Choose Managed Packages You're a partner looking to build and deliver a packaged solution on AppExchange. You’re working with multiple orgs and are creating a package to be used in them, and you have a compelling need to block changes in production that can't be accomplished through governance and permissions alone. You have a compelling need to formalize what a package exposes and better encapsulate some of the internals that cannot be met by the equivalent capability of Unlocked Packages. You have a compelling need to access to namespaces to help keep code organized and modular that can't be accomplished through governance and development standards alone, and have adequate engineering expertise to design for the added complexity this will add to things like LWC cross-namespace operations. Why You Wouldn't Choose Managed Packages You're not an AppExchange partner and have no compelling reason to use them. You’re not 100% sure of how metadata might be reused and don’t want to prevent reuse of everything. The package’s functionality changes frequently or might need to allow for major refactoring. For example, some custom Apex utilities for handling security or caching might be more suitable than dense business logic. Your team is not absolutely sure of how to design for additional namespace-related complexity for both developers and users of packages. This is especially true where dynamic code or configuration are used. All packages take significant time to create, release, and install. Barriers to Moving Rightward with Migration Techniques There are a few common constraints to moving to the right on the spectrum. People/Skills Metadata and packages require teams that have some familiarity with code and source control. Use of the Salesforce CLI is recommended, as is Visual Studio Code and the Salesforce Extensions. Even experienced Salesforce admins and developers may not be familiar with the latest tools. From an individual user’s perspective, the extra steps may feel like more work because it’s not always easy to see the eventual big-picture gains. Scratch orgs and sandboxes that support source tracking make it easy to retrieve what you’ve changed in an org. The Salesforce Extensions for VS Code make it possible to easily retrieve those changes (via shortcuts) and built-in GitHub integration means you don’t have to use the CLI, either. Even developers who adore terminals benefit from how few keystrokes this requires. The new Salesforce DevOps Center, currently in Developer Preview and planned for GA in 2021, will help admins work with source-controlled deployments. It offers a simpler way for non-developers to make changes in a developer environment, automatically track those changes (no spreadsheets for building change sets!), and commit them to source control (no IDE or CLI!). Join the Trailblazer Community Group for DevOps Center to stay informed. Tooling Assuming people are willing to learn all these new tools, there’s the issue of tooling and access itself. For example, some companies restrict installation of developer tools on machines. You may have to get exceptions to software restrictions, ports unblocked, a public npm registry allowed, and so on. And while we take for granted cloud-based source control (e.g., GitHub and GitLab) that may not be an option for some companies. The setup described below may involve several on-premises servers and be more complex than most of us experience. Or, your company may require a security review of the cloud services you choose. API Support Not everything can be deployed by every technique due to product gaps. The best resource for understanding these gaps is the Metadata Coverage Report. The following images and scenarios are as of Winter ’21 (api version 50) and subject to change. For example, let’s say you’ve set up and tested LiveAgent (Chat) in a sandbox. To move that to production, based on the chart above, you could: Deploy all the changes manually (hopefully you tracked them carefully!) Use change sets to deploy everything except the LiveAgentSettings, which would need to be done manually before deploying. Deploy all the changes via CLI or IDE. You could not use a package to do the deployment. Note: There are more objects related to deploying LiveAgent. We simplified this example so you don’t have to scroll all over the Metadata Coverage Report to look at all of them. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the coverage report, for example predictions built with Prediction Builder or portability policies, then they aren’t supported in anything other than manual setup. Why doesn’t everything support all the deployment options? This is almost always a prioritization challenge. Products are built by teams and owned by a product manager who has to prioritize what their users want. Each team is responsible for adding support for deployment techniques to their product, and they balance this against new features, bug fixes, and other work. If you are using a feature that doesn’t deploy well, reach out to the product manager to make sure they know that you value deployability. Your process may dictate product adoption Eventually, you may have an amazing deployment process you love that’s running like a well-oiled machine. Then, Salesforce creates some killer new feature that your users are really excited about, but it lacks support for your preferred deployment process. At this point, you face an uncomfortable choice: Create a whole new process around deploying that one tool (adding complexity and reducing agility), or wait until the new feature has proper deployment support that lets you preserve your process. Ultimately this becomes a “greater business value” choice. This is another scenario in which it’s important that the product team understands that their deployability support is preventing your adoption of their feature. Downstream Effects Continuing the previous example, imagine you have additional functionality that depends on your LiveAgentButton (think of an Experience, formerly known as a Community, where that button is embedded). You would also not be able to use unlocked or managed packages for that community (ExperienceBundle), even though ExperienceBundle itself works with unlocked packages, because the ExperienceBundle package wouldn’t contain all the source without that button. You could, however, use an org-dependent package that assumes the button will exist in the target environment. Platform Quality As you look through the coverage report, you’ll see links to known issues. Second-generation packaging is relatively new, as are the SFDX tools and features like Code Builder and DevOps Center. Additionally, Salesforce is making huge efforts to expand metadata coverage and releasing new products and features. You are more likely to find blocking bugs and gaps in newer functionality. You may even find that within a metadata type, certain features don’t behave as expected. For example, orgs with source tracking will register changes when adding a new field or renaming an object, but changes to an object’s field history tracking are ignored. You can edit the object metadata by hand to change the value, and then it deploys as expected. Please report issues so that Salesforce gets them fixed and other customers are aware of them. Deployments are More than Metadata OK, so let’s say you’ve chosen one or more options described in this guide for your project. You’ll typically find “other stuff” that you need to deploy with your change. Here are some examples: You’ve added some new functionality and created a new permission set. Besides just deploying the app, you need to assign those permissions. You have things stored in data (records) that your code, Flows, or processes depend on, like a new chatter group needs to be created a custom setting needs to be populated business hours need to be set CPQ rules need to be migrated You’re using something to the right of direct-in-production changes, but you’re using some features that lack API support, so that is the only option. In these examples, if you’re doing manual deployments, these are just additional manual steps. If you’re using packages, you have the option to create Apex classes that run as a post install script. They can verify the state of records in the org and modify where necessary. There is no option to do a pre-install as part of the package installation, so you’ll need to make those changes manually or from a script outside the package. If you’re doing deployments from metadata, you’ll need to complete these steps either manually or via a script that runs before and/or after your deployment. Manual Change Sets Metadata API Deployments Packages Pre-Deploy Manual Manual Manual, External Script Manual, External Script Post-Deploy Manual Manual Manual, External Script Manual, External Script The advantage of using deployment scripts is testability. You can run the script on a non-production environment and verify the result, and modify the script as necessary before using it in production. Permissions Permissions are worth a special call-out. Historically, when people create new objects, fields, and so on, they often assign them to one or more profiles. With change sets, it’s possible to deploy those profile changes. The scenario get a little more complicated with metadata deployments. You can modify a profile and retrieve it from a source-tracking org, but it’s going to be the entire, very large profile instead of just what you’ve added. The metadata API tries to handle these modifications for you and may be successful. For example, if you retrieve from a change set or package.xml, the API will try to return the portion of the profile that corresponds to the other metadata in the retrieval scope. Similarly, you can deploy a profile that contains only what’s in your package and the API will attempt to merge it with the existing profile that covers the rest of the org. You probably want finer-grained control than that. Packages are even more interesting. On deployment, they assign (by default) permissions for everything in the package to the System Administrator profile. If you ever retrieve that profile, it’s going to have references to all the installed packages. If you’re using an org with source tracking to build, adding any object or field to a profile will cause the profile to be marked as “modified.” When you retrieve the source, the entire profile downloads, not just the field you change. The profile source probably refers to something in the org beyond the scope of your project, so you’ll be manually cleaning those to keep from polluting the profile source files. You likely see the point: Profiles are not the right tool. Salesforce recommends using permission sets to assign permissions. They’re more granular, aren’t 1:1 with users, and eliminate dependencies on a profile. If you’re not familiar, take a moment to read Migrating to Permission Sets for DX. You can also use permission set groups to reduce the work of managing common clusters of permission sets. Environments Once you’ve moved beyond manual changes in production, you’re into the world of developer environments. This section covers the different types of environments available to you and how we recommend using them. Sandboxes A sandbox is an org that’s created from your production org and remains connected to that org. Usually, the metadata matches the production org’s metadata at the time of sandbox copy. It is possible to copy a sandbox from another sandbox. Your sandbox allocation is based on the edition of your production org. Salesforce will sell you more if you need them. Sandboxes can be deleted or refreshed (a fresh copy from production) but are limited in the frequency. The minimum duration in the table below describes how long a sandbox must be active before it can be refreshed or deleted. Sandboxes Scratch Org Developer Developer Pro Partial Copy Full Data Storage1 200MB 1GB 5GB Matches Production 200MB File Storage 200MB 1GB Matches Production Matches Production 50MB Minimum Duration (Days) 1 1 5 29 None2 Data Copy None None Per Template Per Template or All None Metadata Copy Matches Production Matches Production Matches Production Matches Production None Features/Licenses Matches Production Matches Production Matches Production Matches Production Matches Definition File3, Shape4 1 Salesforce has an unusual way of calculating storage based on record count. 2 Scratch orgs have a maximum duration of 30 days. 3 Scratch org definiton files allow for various feature enablements and license configuations. 4 Scratch org shape (Beta) allows scratch org feature and license enablements to match a source org. Developer and Developer Pro Sandboxes The main difference between Developer and Developer Pro sandboxes is their storage capacity. You should use them for creating most changes. Because they support source tracking, you can use the CLI or DevOps Center to capture your changes for you. Once you’re done with changes, you can migrate those changes as described in the Deployment Techniques, from Simplest to Most Scalable section. The challenge with these sandbox types is that they contain no data when created. As a result you need to do one of the following: Manually create sample data needed to build and test your changes Manually load data through a data loading tool or the Salesforce CLI Script data loads via CLI commands Use a data migration tool to copy some subset of data from production Partial Copy Sandboxes Partial Copy sandboxes allow for more storage and let you create a sandbox template to copy a subset of production data. This dramatically simplifies the data set up and can be used for complex testing where a lot of test data is required. The main limitation of templates is that they work per object. If you have a small amount of production data, you can pick the objects that you want. But if you need Person Account records, but have 3 million of them in production, you can’t select which Accounts/Contacts the template should copy; it’s all-or-nothing at the object level. Because each Person Account is 4k of storage (one account at 2K plus one contact at 2K), 3 million of them will consume about 11GB of data storage. Full A full copy can be exactly what it sounds like — just copy everything. Because sandbox copy time is related to the amount of data to copy, you can limit the copy to the items you need using a template. Besides data, you can also choose to include or omit things like field history and Chatter to speed up the copy process. Full Copy sandboxes are best suited for: Final UAT, where users want to preview your changes using real data that feels like production Training users in a realistic environment before the changes are released Scale testing. Sure, your code or Flow worked fine with a few hundred records. But was your SOQL query not selective enough given how much data you have in production? Does your dashboard take four minutes to load? Debugging using an exact copy of production, after you’ve been unable to reproduce issues in simpler environments Sandbox versioning During Salesforce releases windows, you will want to carefully time your sandbox refreshes to make sure sandboxes are on the version you want. The dates can change each release, as well as which instances receive the release preview before or after production, so always check the release information. You might want some developer sandboxes to remain on the same release as your production org for scenarios that involve hot-fixes or debugging. At the same time, you may be working in Developer sandboxes on a project that should go live after the next Salesforce major release. There, you’ll want those orgs on preview so that you can test against the target release and use any features in that release that aren’t currently available. There may be a period where you can’t promote certain changes from your preview sandboxes until destination orgs receive the release. You may wan to use another sandbox to prepare for releases with user training, creating release documentation, or similar activities. Sandbox planning requires keeping up with the release dates for not only production but also specific sandbox instances and planning refreshes around release windows. About those copy times Sandbox copies on a large org can take several days. Large orgs will want to plan accordingly if they really need everything in their org in a Full Sandbox. Salesforce has announced Quick-Create Sandboxes (both Developer and Full) that dramatically reduce the copy time—a large org might copy in less than 10 minutes instead of days. Not only does it reduce the wait time when users manually create sandboxes, but also allows for more automation in CI processes. This will be especially useful when changes can’t be packages or when using Org-Dependent packages. A Developer Preview for Quick-Create Sandboxes may occur in the Spring ‘21 release. A word on sandboxes and security Sandboxes do copy your users from the production org, including their permissions. If your sandbox owner is an administrator in production, their sandbox is ready to go — they can do what they need to. Some companies either limit developers’ privileges in production or don’t allow developers a production login at all. If that’s the case, someone with production admin permissions will need to create the sandbox, log in, and then elevate the permissions of the sandbox user to whatever is required for their changes (usually full permissions). For sandboxes that copy from production data (Partial Copy and Full Copy types), or for organizations that are copying production data to Developer or Developer Pro Sandboxes, this opens another potential security problem. Specifically, there may be production data developers should not have access to. Besides access by the developers themselves, developers may make changes to security policies or open temporary security gaps. Some examples: Removing SSO requirements or IP restrictions for more convenient access by local development tools and other apps Connecting off-platform apps they’re building before those apps have been security tested Testing AppExchange packages before you’ve reviewed their security Making callouts to insecure external systems This risk is mitigated by using a tool that masks production data like Salesforce Data Mask. The Production Administrator can decide which data should be obfuscated or deleted as part of the sandbox creation process to prevent developer access or inadvertent exposure. Scratch Orgs Scratch orgs are very different from sandboxes. They are meant to be created quickly, destroyed quickly, and be more configurable. An example of configurability: Let’s say you want to experiment with a new feature like Salesforce CPQ. Sandboxes will create with the licenses, configuration, and metadata from your production org. You’d have to get CPQ licenses added to production, then create your sandbox (or sync licenses of an existing sandbox). But with scratch orgs, you can specify the org’s features in a configuration file. You can spin up the org and do your proof-of-concept. For developers building features, scratch orgs help with enforcing dependencies. Because scratch orgs don’t start with your production metadata, you’ll be able to capture in source control everything your changes require. If you forgot to include something, you won’t be able to deploy it to a scratch org. Scratch orgs are the preferred option for creating non-org-dependent packages. And behind the scenes, they’re where Salesforce builds your package from your source. Some forward-looking statements For some customers, the complexity of configuring and scripting the set up of scratch orgs has been a barrier to their use. They really are empty unless you specify the configuration, settings, metadata, and data. To make this process easier, scratch org shapes (Beta in Winter ‘21) provide two options: Export a configuration file that matches production. This lets users start with a production-based configuration and optionally add or remove features and settings. Spin up new orgs based on the current shape of production without maintaining a file. This option also supports limits, features, and settings that aren’t otherwise available in configuration files and metadata API. Additionally, building scripts for scratch orgs are another challenge. First, you have to create and maintain the scripts. This can be especially challenging for users without shell-scripting experience. Second, they can take a long time to run, especially if you’re installing a lot of packages (your own or AppExchange). To accelerate this experience, there’s a pilot for scratch org snapshots that let you get an org to a known state (for example, installing all the packages and doing data setup) and then store the snapshot of it. Then, future orgs can start from that snapshot. Example Scenario: Blended Processes Remember, most companies can’t (or shouldn’t) use a single technique for all deployments. The following is a realistic scenario of a company trying to move to a packaging approach while running multiple techniques. In this scenario, you want to use packages because you have a complex enterprise environment where several teams (both internal and SI) are working on multiple projects that eventually deploy into a single org. Occasionally, these separate teams come into contention on shared objects like Account and Contact. Where you can’t use packages, you do metadata deployments from source (at least for now), and you have one project using its own process due to Salesforce limitations within specific features. The Preferred Approach Several parts of your org’s configuration are currently deployed using Unlocked Packages. This is your preferred option when possible. Any changes run through your CI process, create a new package version, and deploy. Each package contains a few permission sets that are sometimes modified, too. Process for the Preferred Approach Each package is stored in its own repo. A developer creates a Git branch and uses a scratch org to make changes. The developer pulls changes from the scratch org, commits to the repo, and creates a pull request (PR). The PR initiates various automated tests in a scratch org. Once reviewed and merged, CI automatically builds a new package version and installs to a series of orgs before deploying to production. Depending on the nature of the change, users may manually review the changes in the QA sandbox (UAT) before the package deploys to production. If users have problems with a release, the previous version of the package is deployed. With this approach, you may experience... Occasionally, someone needs to make a production change. Unlocked packages allow for this. It’s considered an “exception” so part of the exception process is creating a work item for that change to get into the next package. Almost all new projects are used this way, unless there are technical limitations preventing it. The defect rate is dramatically reduced by the automated test and dependencies caught by the packaging process itself. To support this process, you’ve created a few docs and videos that walk admins through the basics of using VS Code to connect to GitHub and to the orgs. They know how to create a branch, push/pull changes, commit, and open PRs. They’ve seen DevOps Center and think it might make their lives easier. To support both admins and developers, each project also maintains some scripts that set up an org with the required configuration, users, permissions, and basic data. Everyone knows how to run the script. You’ve opened several cases with Salesforce support around unexpected issues with packaging. There is often a lot of debate about packaging strategy. Should we split this one into two? Should these be combined? Can we break out part of one because it might be a shared dependency for a new project and an existing one? This is new territory for everyone and it’s the place where teams, who can usually work independently, tend to find conflict. You’re wondering if “Packaging Strategy” should be someone’s job to decide. A Secondary Approach Additional metadata exists in a single large GitHub repo per Metadata API: Deployment with Source Control + CI. You’d like to break part of it off into a few more packages, but haven’t had time yet. It’s not clear how it should be organized in a package because the dependencies are so tangled. You use GitHub Actions to deploy this between environments. Some parts of it probably end up being Org-Dependent Packages eventually, but you don’t like using non-GA features. Process for the Secondary Approach The source lives in a single repo. A developer creates (or refreshes) a Developer sandbox before beginning work. The developer then makes changes in the sandbox, pulls them to local source, commits to GitHub, and opens a PR to merge into the integration branch. CI deploys the entire repo to a Partial Copy sandbox named Integrate to verify and run larger tests. If new metadata is being created, the developer may also need to add new test data to the sandbox(es) manually or, preferably, by script. If everything looks good, the changes from the feature branch are merged into the QA branch, which initiates a metadata deployment to a Full Copy sandbox. Users can test larger changes there. You have options here (more on branches): Each change is merged from the feature branch into the main branch, which deploys to production. This is a lot of manual merges and a complicated branch operation, but does allow for granular changes to go when they’re ready. It may also create a lot of manual reviews in the QA sandbox. When everything in QA looks good, a production deployment happens. This is simpler and perhaps more predictable (“if we liked QA, we’ll like Production”) but does allow for a not-ready change to keep other things from deploying (since you’re all working in one big repo) and this can become a bottleneck. With this approach, you may experience... Because you’ve enjoyed your packaged projects so much, you’ve got a team testing org-dependent packages. You’re not using them for production deployments, but plan to as soon as it’s GA. You prioritize decomposing the remaining into packages based on how often the bottlenecks happen. Speeding up the different teams and reducing contention has real ROI. Several projects have tried to break off from this approach and used unlocked packages but ended up back here after a bit of wasted effort. You’ve set up a tracker for which metadata types you are using that aren’t supported in packaging and update it each release per the Metadata Coverage Report to plan future migrations to your preferred process, to help prevent those wasted efforts from happening. This has a lot more manual steps and is more error prone than your packages. You’ve created checklists and source reviews to prevent mistakes from happening. A Non-Standard Approach You have an Experience using Salesforce CMS that you work on in a Full Copy sandbox. You’ve had bad Experiences (pun intended) moving these via metadata because of product gaps and bugs, so you typically build LWC for the community in the full sandbox, deploy them to production via Metadata API containing just the LWC and supporting Apex classes, and let the experience administrators manually add them to the production version of the Experience rather than try to deploy the Experience. This entire process is owned by a single developer. Process for a Non-Standard Approach The production admin creates/refreshes a Full Copy sandbox. The developer connects to the sandbox using VS Code and retrieves selected LWC/Apex classes via Org Browser. The developer makes the changes locally, auto-saving to the sandbox on each change. The developer previews the changes in the Experience. Sometimes, large changes are previewed in the Full Copy sandbox (UAT) by someone else before deploying to production. The developer commits changes to source control for safety and reversibility, but the deployment of individual LWC and Apex occurs to production from local source. On the spectrum of techniques, this is a combination of: Metadata API: Direct Deployments for the developer even though they’re using source control because the deployment is not directly from the source control system. Manual Changes in Production for the community admin With this approach, you may experience... This works fine when it’s just LWC and Apex Classes that are being modified. The developer must be careful not to modify any Apex classes or LWC that do not belong to this Experience project. Occasionally, a change extends beyond the scope of this work (for example, creating some new fields on an SObject used internally and in the Experience). This tends to become a larger effort coordinating across project boundaries, where the Experience LWCs are waiting for changes in packages. There have been a few occasions where you choose to copy-paste some code from elsewhere in the org rather than create a dependency on existing code. It’s a trade-off accepted to keep this process more independent. You make notes of these in the code and eventually plan to eliminate these duplications. You don’t see this work becoming multideveloper or multiteam anytime soon. Every year or so, you check the progress of metadata types and ExperienceBundle deployments to see if it’s possible to improve this area and be more consistent with your other deployments. Third-party Tooling Source Control The SFDX command line tools are agnostic to your source, and the use of scripts should let you work with the tool of your choice. Early iterations of DevOps Center work with GitHub, so if you can use that for source control, you should. CumulusCI CumulusCI is a free, open-source CI tool used heavily by the Salesforce.org ecosystem (not-for-profits). Support for second-generation packaging is in progress, so we do not recommend using its default automation unless you’re an ISV. However, it is extensible to use any Salesforce CLI command (or any shell command in general). It includes some powerful features for automating UI tests (simulating a browser), loading test data, creating fake data, dealing with namespaces, and managing releases and release notes via GitHub. Salesforce Partners Several tooling vendors are working to solve some of the complexities of deployments. You should explore them as part of any company-wide deployment strategy initiative. IDEs CI/CD Providers Release Management Partners Closing Remarks Someday, API support may be so ubiquitous that you can select deployment mechanisms solely based on your team’s preferences. Until then, the Metadata Coverage Report is your friend. Give it a look anytime you’re planning to move rightward on the spectrum or introduce new metadata types into your deployments.
