A post for all new and longtime Jeff Blim livestream viewers and chatters. Welcome! (updated on March 8 2024)
*This tumblr has a discord server btw, https://disboard.org/server/1178351989009170573
*check https://starkid.fandom.com/wiki/Jeff_Blim to compare facts here. For now, the wikia is more updated than this since everyone knows where it is. But this post has further information than the one in wikia.
Update (May 15, 2024) Thank you so much for following me. I apologize for not following back but I may find your posts (and like or repost them) when they have a Jeff Blim tag and other tags in my list.
Sometimes we read the same questions over and over on his stream and he has answered all of them in the past. Or accidentally ignores/did not read the old, repeated question, so he can't answer because he's busy doing stuff on the stream. And sometimes, instead of giving the answer to our fellow fans, we just give joke answers instead because we are that silly. I'm trying hard to remember fun facts/stuff he shared on his livestreams and will update if I can. Please help with mistakes on recollection to avoid fake facts. Thank you...
I. The Content in his livestreaming. Well, most days we listen to demos, Jeff live composing his music/songs and some of them are spoiler-less clues to up-and-coming StarKid shows, showcase his difficult and complex relationship with Logic and Stream labs (gee, that sounds familiar. There is screaming/shouting and desk hitting, followed by amazing wit to calm his nerves) listen to him improv and say funny things sometimes based on what Chat is typing about. And have that clout chaser and clout black hole named Jon Matteson as his guest in his streams, most of the time via phone call. If Jon ever gets on his stream, good luck trying to get attention from Jeff on the chat lol. The bromance is strong in this one (although I have gotten Jeff's attention once while Jon was on stream but it was about Jon haha).
Sometimes Jeff just wants to hang out and talk anything, jam with his piano, answer personality quizzes that we give him, give out audition advices (Uncle Jeff's audition hotline. make sure to identify when he's being sincere and when's he's joking/being sarcastic), talk about his hobbies, do spreadsheet baseball... On his hot takes, they are plainly hot takes and you don't have to agree with whatever he says. His hot takes are, half of the time, for entertainment purposes only. Send acting audition help inquiries to [email protected] to make your dream work. More cheaper charges than the one in Broadway Plus. You can also DM Uncle Jeff on his active social media accounts (Twitch, IG) No silly messages pls. Just acting audition help business ONLY. His rates are 75 dollars per hour, 50 for half. To those who can afford, he has a patreon page if you want downloadable copies to the songs he composes on his streams. The link is in his Twitch and YT pages.
II. Music 1. He started learning the piano as a young boy. His teacher was a Russian woman (I can't remember her name). Then he switched to the trumpet and told his father he didn't want to play the piano anymore. 2. He was never a member of a drum corps but went to a camp for it by the The Cavaliers. 3. He only joined Amazin Blue, an a cappella group in UMich, because he wanted to be in a band. He ended up becoming their music director because he wanted every member to have a song where they provided the main vocals, which is something that he butted heads with previous music directors in the past. He won an award for a cappella arrangement for his work with Amazin Blue. Their two albums (Shades of Blue and Self-Titled) can be found in Bandcamp One of his former fellow members in AB is also famous now. The half of the team behind Dear Evan Hansen, Justin Paul.
5. He was a trumpet player at the church where he grew up. (one of his first jobs). 6. According to him, he used to listen to awful Christian rock while growing up. 7. His dad is a retired band director. 8. Likes The 1975 9. He mentioned in Feb 23, 2024 on his stream that he does not want to sing Get In My Mouth live again because he does not want to relive the memory of playing a giant spider. He still thinks it's a great song.
III. Jobs First: Taking out the trash for a neighbor. Second: Trumpet player at the church where he grew up. Third: High school - Trumpet player and played as an "executioner" at a Medieval Times Dinner Theater (??? I'm not well-versed about this as I don't live in the US). After college, while looking for acting jobs and writing TTO. New York City Fourth: Carrying signs for Disney at Times Square. Fifth: Theater Usher (his favorite job). Los Angeles Sixth: working for THAT infamous Los Angeles escape room that he got from Nick Lang. Seventh: Full-time streamer, actor, singer, composer, dancer, acting coach, Internet Uncle to 20+ nephews and nieces 😆 around the world. A. One of his fave TV jobs is his appearance on HBO's Veep because he loves the show. B. On the 911 episode where his chef character accidentally hurts himself, he said he didn't particularly enjoyed his time shooting that ep because he was strapped with a heavy object on his chest during the bloody scene. C. Shooting 24/7: Lego Maniac was fun Eighth: He said a few times he's not auditioning anymore and will only take roles offered to him. Whether it's a joke or not, let's just take that as fact for now lol. There was a phase in his life that he got tired of auditioning (NYC, while writing TTO).
IV. StarKid Stuff
(while answering a personality quiz and as of late 2023 or early 2024) Fave Hatchetfield musical: Black Friday. (while answering a personality quiz as of late 2023 or early 2024) Fave LiB: Nibbly. For the longest time, he considers "Lost Without You" as his/one of his favorite songs that he wrote because it's his first ballad. Generally, if you ask him what's his fave StarKid song or what's his favorite play/musical he was a part, he can't/won't choose because he considers all of them his favorite. 2. I've read this many times, Max Jagerman was never written for Jeff. He may replicate the energy but he is too old to play a high schooler. Can you imagine him doing the shirtless scene during Dirty Girl? His body is no longer like when he did Aladdin in Twisted. He is no longer in his 20s. 3. He said he had the most fun composing for Black Friday.
V. StarKid Tangent Stuff 1. As of Feb 2024, Jeff announced that Rim Tim Timmy is dead. RIP Rim Tim Timmy. :,-( Meanwhile, his sister (chat head canon and Jeff laughed at the name) Rim (Ram) Tam Tammy is alive and well, thank yewww.... VI. Movies 1. For list of movies he loves, check out Rim Tim Timmy's Movies Movies Movies. Yes, you don't know half/most of the movies he likes cause he's old and you're a Gen Z-er. Get a grip. 2. His first and only appearance so far in a full length film is in his brother's indie movie Mondo Hollywoodland. As of now, the movie is available to watch for free in some streaming sites. VII. Likes 1. Coffee once a day, most of the time spending 10 dollars a cup from a shop. He has thankfully quit on nitro. He describes it like a drug addiction he needs to curb. He wants the baristas who are serving him to have that indifferent vibe.
2. Spreadsheet baseball. He plays with classic/ old school famous baseball players. He used to just play on an excel spreadsheet that he made himself until a fan who showed up on one of the TGWDLM showings and told him that he can compete with other people online.
3. Is a fan of the up and coming sport of arm wrestling. He only watches people arm wrestle, not engage in one.

Hiya! Could I have a piece Shinsou x fem s/o who is chubby? She is really outgoing and cute and she believes in Shinsou 100% (maybe her quirk turns shape shifts her into an Animal and sometimes when Shinso is stressed she turns into a cat. ) However one day Shinso comes to class early and finds a guy picking on her and making rude comments about her weight. She has her head down and she begins to cry. Shinso of course isn’t having any of that. And maybe it leads to a confession?
Hi! Absolutely! Sorry it took some time to write because it was hard to write something like this. “How do I write about a female character who has problems with her weight and not make this story dark and depressing and also give it a happy ending? because I relate to the whole weight thing.” So I tried my best. Also I haven’t read the manga yet so if Shinsou is way out of character, I’m sorry, I only have the limited knowledge the anime gave me, with also scanning over his character page on the wikia.
Hitoshi Shinsou x chubby fem!reader
Shinsou Hitoshi, your classmate. Your friend. Your crush. You and Shinsou were in class c together. While general studies is the class you wanted to be in, it wasn’t the one Shinsou wanted. You knew his dreams and goals. He wanted to be a hero.
He wanted to be in the hero course but his quirk and intelligence didn’t make the cut.
He couldn’t use his quirk to fight like the hero course students’. His quirk that could brainwash anyone, just by asking a simple question, putting his victim at ease. And with that he could command them to do what he pleased, as long as the task didn’t require complex thought.
You knew Shinsou deserved to be in the hero course. His quirk was amazing. He was passionate about jumping up into class A and it made you admire him.
Shinsou was a closed off guy. He thought that the whole world was scared of him because of how easily he could control people. How people would have to stay on alert talking to him in case he would swoop in and control their mind. With that, he hated people with quirks that were viewed as hero like.
You knew Shinsou wasn’t like that. He wasn’t a villain in the makings. He was destined to save people and be a hero!
You loved talking to Shinsou. His voice was nice and relaxing. You were at ease with him. He was an amazing guy to talk to. He was so intelligent about so many things, and he could be funny when he wanted to be.
You forced yourself into his life. He made it clear that he didn’t want to make any friends, but you made it clear that you didn’t care. You were gonna be best friends with him.
And you won that fight. Even if your outgoing personality clashed against his more introverted one.
While you broke down his walls, you discovered the things you had in common. You both loved cats.
And lucky for you, you had a shape shifting quirk that allowed you to turn into any animal you wanted. And around Shinsou, you turned into a soft fluffy white cat.
He thought it was no fair that you would turn into a cat at the worst times. When you wanted to win an argument, to get out of doing things, or to just annoy him. Or as a long haired cat, you got white fur all over the place. “Shinsou, I didn’t know you had a cat!” someone would comment on the white hairs all over his uniform. He’d give you a glare. “I don’t.”
If he was doing homework, being one with the cat form, you would walk across his desk, all over his books and papers and lay down right there.
He couldn’t stay mad at you long. Because you were a really cute cat.
It was an amazing friendship. You knew his secrets, and his likes.
And he knew yours.
Until you developed a crush on him. It took over you completely. You could no longer talk to him casually like before, because now when he smiled at you, your heart felt like it exploded. His smile was the sun. It was warm, inviting, and bright.
There was no way he would ever like you back. You had a cute face, but…You didn’t have the body he would ever desire. You weren’t like those pretty girls who had tiny bodies, slim stomachs, toned legs. No you were a bigger girl.
You didn’t let your insecurities get the best of you, but they would show up at unexpected times.
Your weight didn’t really bother you in your friendship with Shinsou, until he made a comment about your cat form. He lifted you off his desk and placed you on the ground. “Man, you are one big cat.”
Maybe he thought it was something innocent, something that just came with being that type of cat. But to you, it meant something more.
You never told him that your weight was an issue to you. And that his comment meant something to you.
It shouldn’t have, because you were comfortable enough with yourself to not let small comments get to you.
But that comment was a long while ago. It left your mind, but your crush on Shinsou just grew stronger.
It was a normal school day. It was a nice warm morning, and you had a peaceful walk to school. You were looking forward today because you got to see Shinsou. He usually arrived just right before the teacher walked in. You arrived at school early just because you liked being able to talk with your other school friends before class started.
Today was not supposed to be anything out of the ordinary. Just a normal day.
There wasn’t more than a few other of your classmates there. There was a new student in your class. He was quite rude to everyone. Made sexist and gross comments at the girls, and bullied the other students.
He had a truth telling quirk which made him the worst. Shuichi Watanabe. He was just an all over villain in the makings.
You never let him get to you. “Good morning, everyone!” You greeted with a smile as you walked to your seat.
“Good morning, l/n!” You got a few replies back. “Yeah, good morning piggie.” Shuichi smirked in your direction. You ignored him and sat down.
“How are you today, piggie?” He asked. You, yet again, said nothing. You reached into your bag and got out your notebook, filled with notes for the first subject of the day.
“Leave her alone, Shuichi!” one of the girls who was here snapped at him. She was a more reserved girl so you appreciated her courage to stand up to him for you, but you knew if he laid into her, she would retreat into herself.
Shuichi got up from his seat and strutted over to right in front of your desk. “Hey, I asked you a question! Does the all that fat plug your ears or something?”
You swallowed hard, and smiled up at him, doing your best not to let his comments get to you. “I’m great today, Shuichi. How about you?”
“I’m good, but I have a question that needs answered, l/n. And I think you can do that for me.”
Why did he choose to terrorize you today? In fact, why was he even here this early? He was almost always late to class.
“Is it about homework?” You replied in a sigh. “No. No, I just gotta know. Does Shinsou know about your crush on him?”
Everyone knew you and Shinsou were good friends and your friends teased you about a possible blooming love between the two of you.
It was natural to think that two people of the opposite sex would end up dating. You used to believe that it was a myth that a male and female couldn’t be friends without someone catching feelings; Until it happened to you.
So you thought to yourself that Shuichi didn’t know that you in fact had a crush on your friend and was just trying to rile you up.
“That’s a boring question. If you want to know something about me, ask something else.”
“It’s not boring to me, because I just want to know if he does know because then I also wanna know how he feels having the fat girl in our class drooling over him. Cause it must suck. Out of all the people in the class, it was you.”
Your chest felt tight. “Please leave me alone. Don’t you think you can go be an asshole somewhere else?”
“Oh, did I strike a chord?” He teased. “Yes.” The words flew out of your mouth without you thinking about it. Your cheeks flared up in embarrassment. He was using his quirk on you. He laughed.
“So you do like Shinsou Hitoshi?”
You pursed your lips together tightly. You could feel your words come up your throat. But it was useless. He was going to win. “Yes.” You answered.
“Ha! I knew it! Man, I feel so bad for that sorry bastard! You’re the only person in this school who likes him so he’ll have no choice but you be with you! That Shinsou will go broke having to keep feeding you all that crap you stuff your face with!”
Your eyes brimmed with tears. You felt so embarrassed and it hurt so much to have this guy take your feelings for Shinsou and stomp on them.
You looked down at your desk, trying to hide your hurt.
“Leave her be.”
The familiar voice surprised you. You looked up and there was Shinso, standing in the doorway. How much did he hear? “Did you hear any of that? How she’s in love with you?” Shuichi said in a sick tone. “I heard you using your quirk to prey on her. Isn’t that what villains do? So do us all a favor and dropout.” Shinsou walked over.
“You don’t scare me. I saw you in the sports festival. Losing against some kid who can’t use his quirk without breaking his bones and you flailed around as he pushed you over the line.”
You took your chance, and got out of your seat and ran out of the classroom. You couldn’t face Shinsou. Especially now.
Shinsou sighed to himself. He didn’t like seeing you cry. He glared at Shuichi who howled with laughter. Shinsou calmed himself and focused. He smirked. “You saw that, huh?”
“Who didn’t!-” Shuichi’s smile dropped and his pupils shrunk. “Walk over to the window by your desk and open it.” Shinsou commanded. Shuichi, under his control stood up straight and strode over to his desk, pushing it to the side to access the windows latch, undoing it and sliding the glass window open. “Now climb out it and jump.”
Without even a thought, Shuichi swung his leg over to ledge.
“Shinsou! You can’t do that! You’ll kill him!” The one female student shouted, standing up. “I know what I’m doing. Watanabe, freeze.”
Shinsou walked over to Shuichi, and let go of his control on him. Shuichi jump in shock, seeing himself halfway out of the window. Shinsou pulled him back into the room by the collar of his jacket. “You- You tried to kill me!” Shuichi cried, staggering away from Shinsou.  “No. I proved to you that you have a weak mind, and that I can take over you and make you do anything I tell you to. So watch your back. Next time you ever mess with y/n, again, I won’t hesitate to use my quirk on you. And next time, I won’t stop you from plunging to your death.”
Shinsou walked out of the classroom, walking to the bathrooms, where he knew you were hiding. He knocked on the door. “Are you all right, y/n? I took care of him. He won’t mess with you again.”
You wiped your tears, and did a one over of your appearance in the mirror before walking out of the girls’ bathroom to meet Shinsou.
“I’m all right.” You nodded. “Good. Anyway, since it’s so early still. Wanna go hang out in the library? I downloaded that new song I was telling you about yesterday, so we can listen to it on my phone.” Shinsou pulled out his earbuds, that were connected to his phone.
“Listen, Hitoshi, what he made me say back there about li-” “Hey, y/n, let’s talk about that later. How about at the park, after school?”
You looked up at him, confused. “I think that ice cream van might be parked there again. It’ll be my treat.” Shinsou continued on. You looked down. “I’m not going to make you pay for me. Besides, I’m not in the mood for ice cream, or anything right now.”
“Hey, whatever he said isn’t true. You’re beautiful, y/n. You don’t have to look like those other girls, to be just as attractive. Shuichi is an idiot. He can’t see how pretty you really are. So let me take you out and make you feel better.”
It kind of sounded like a date invitation to you and you didn’t want to get your hopes up. “I’m fine, really. You don’t have to do that. Save your money for something important.” You declined once more.
“If you didn’t know, y/n, I’m asking you out on a date. I like you too.”
“What?” You deadpanned at his brisk confession. “I didn’t know if I was ever going to tell you, but hearing you say yes to liking me kinda makes me feel like I should take my chance. So, go out with me, y/n.”
“I-I, uh,” You were at a loss of words. He smiled down at you, patting your head. “The world’s most obnoxious girl who talks to every stranger she comes across becomes speechless at a love confession. Who would’ve thought?” He teased lightly.
Your pride was hurt, and your eyes felt heavy from crying, but you were happy that this morning turned out like it did.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Liveblog (back to masterpost)
Here we go...
Chapter 17: Refinement (Part 7)
I remember wondering if this flashback was ever going to end. It’s so long. Now that I know what happens when it’s over, I can enjoy all the fun times when everyone was young and happy and the only things they had to worry about were Lan Qiren’s punishments and what trouble Wei Wuxian was going to get into next.
lol the guy who lost his sword to the literal abyss...poor kid.
I always forget that these are magical swords.
Ahh. My favorite type of supernatural happenings: horror in the lake shenanigans (not really. I actually dislike them when they appear in TV shows, but since this is a novel and Wei Wuxian is here, everything is good :3)
Speaking of which, he might be a bit of a troll (a very, very big one actually), but Wei Wuxian is actually very trustworthy, especially in dire situations that require quick thinking. He’s the first to notice Su She and go to try pulling him out (I’m always amazed this guy has a name at all).
lol...how petty are you, lan zhan. Doesn’t even want to look at Wei Wuxian even though he’s helping to pull him up.
this whole next part...don’t think of it as innuendo, don’t think of it as innuendo...
studying shakespeare has ruined me. sword innuendo everywhere.
anyway.
this is amusing. Wei Wuxian always does this, doesn’t he? Complain about the people who are helping him to their face. xD
He then proceeds to act hurt or offended, like they did him wrong (this is why the whole world wanted to beat you up and kill you!!)
So, the whole waterborne abyss thing was interesting! I have a fondness for Japanese media about youkai and supernatural creatures/phenomenon. I don’t know about other xianxia novels, but they’re presented very well here. As usual, it gives enough to intrigue you, but not so much that it becomes a drag to read and ten levels of technical mumbo-jumbo while we’re at it.
I also like how you can solve the waterborne abyss problem in two different ways: “kill” it by a complicated process of draining all the water and drying out the land, OR the easy option which is to just make it someone else’s problem. idk it just seems. realistic. we’re talking about a monstrous body of water, yes, but still: realistic.
also lol: no one even mentions the damn Qishan Wen Sect by name, Lan Xichen just points at the sky. god. is it possible for them to have a bigger ego?? Like, on a whole, who is more extra than the guys who have this as their life philosophy: “compete with the sun for radiance, match the sun in longevity”
Also, why is the sun always an issue that needs to be shot down in Chinese mythology/folklore?
AH. That’s why I found two different names on baidu when I went searching for the Nightless City to add to the wikia. So it’s Nightless Sky, or Nightless Celestial City.
soooo...what....ever happened with the waterborne abyss? I guess they eventually found a way to work it out.
in a way, not seeing it through to its conclusion is a smart narrative choice. This is Wei Wuxian’s flashback, and he leaves not long after this, so he’ll never get to know what the conclusion was. Smart. But I’m also curious how they ended up solving it.
lol Wei Wuxian plotting a way to get free loquats. though plotting might not be the right word, he just tends to do these things on a whim. (haha, him asking the women if Lan Wangji is handsome)
“[...]Jiang Cheng [...]he caught the loquat with one hand, a slight smile appearing on his face, but immediately snorted”
So you CAN smile.
Wei wuxian: How do you swear in the Gusu dialect?
haha. never change, Wei Wuxian, never change. But it’s even funnier that he thought about this because he was imagining Lan Wangji speaking the “soft” dialect when he was younger xD
“...and charged over to beat up Jiang Cheng.”
This is so random?? He just. Takes a drink, picks up the paddle, and goes to fool around with Jiang Cheng. xD It is such an offhand comment.
“If you want to eat loquats, should we buy one basket?”
Oh, Lan Xichen...his ability to read his brother is really amazing. And can be appreciated to the fullest extent on subsequent read-throughs. Though, perhaps it wasn’t the loquat itself he wanted to eat, but the one Wei Wuxian got for him...hehehe
He’s just in denial.
Actually. This is funny. When Lan Wangji didn’t want to listen to Wei Wuxian’s drivel and teasing anymore, he hopped on another boat. And he denied Xichen’s suggestion, he hopped on another boat again. Someone likes to run away from his problems, huh.

okay, i decided to disregard/circumvent the stayfocusd time limit just for tonight because fuck it, i don’t have anything to do tonight and i definitely deserve a break. and i like thinking about characters. so i just finished bnha ep 13 (the finale), and here’s my thoughts! finally on the computer yay
for those who know bnha/follow the manga, of course you’re welcome to discuss this stuff with me, but please don’t spoil me on anything or i will cry
i’m still trying to decide the fate of all might. like i said before, he started at the top and he’s got nowhere to go but down. there are a couple routes i think he could take: he lives for a while, then dies tragically but inevitably at the end like korosensei did; he gets abruptly killed off in the middle at a climactic, suspenseful moment, shocking everyone and terrifying them because what will they do without their symbol of peace; he lives, but he has to stop being a full-time superhero and finds another way to live, basically. of course, while i do like analyzing plot for plot twists and all that, i’ve always preferred doing character analysis to everything else, and i’m not that good at predicting plot.
but honestly, sounds like the dude’s gonna die. and if he does, i hope it’s soon, because this was being foreshadowed from episode #1 and i’ve been waiting this entire season, thinking every single episode, “is this the episode he’s going to die?” and he’s not a favorite, but i do like him enough (and am aware enough of how his death will emotionally wreck izuku as well as other characters) that the constant dread is wearing down on me. i am constantly in a state of terrible suspense. (but like i said no spoilers no one is allowed to tell me what happens okay i gotta find out for myself)
kind of a tangent but everything comes back to AC on this blog, so. AC changed the way i think about a lot of things because getting so heavily involved in the canon and fandom, and being exposed to others’ interests, made me far more open-minded than i used to be. for example, i really wasn’t good at shows with large casts (AC and the almost 30 students, BNHA’s students + teachers) before, b/c i didn’t track them very well and am shit at matching names to faces as well as recalling personalities, but hey, obsessing over the entirety of class 3-E for months will change that. also, all my favorites were. usually. karma types, for lack of a better phrasing. i could never relate to cinnamon roll (TM) characters. or characters who weren’t emotional disasters. (boy i had trouble liking nagisa at first.)
regarding what i keep saying about types: the girls, in terms of personalities, aren’t quite my usual thing. the closest person in terms of preference to the characters i typically like are yaoyoruzu and jirou. but honestly who cares because right now i like them all, and they are great and fabulous and uraraka is adorable and i like her a lot. i wanna see her have some character development first, though, and oh god the girls are my aesthetic. momo’s hair and jinou’s general aloof aura + earphones and tsu’s frog quirk and holy shit, pink alien girl? i don’t know her, she hasn’t had much time in the anime yet, but she’s. she’s a girl. who’s pink with alien features. how the fuck is that not the coolest shit ever
as fond of todoroki, as always. i looked up a bit on him on the wikia but i don’t want to spoil myself. but i did pick up enough to solidify my adoration for him. >.< i need to stop but god, i’m really fond of him. fuck. so fond.
izuku’s character continues to develop and it’s really wonderful. i used to live for mentor-student relationships, but then i realised (and AC did not help) that the mentor usually ends up dying, so i’m trying not to get attached to this mentor-student relationship and it’s not fucking working. the conversation he and all might had in the hospital beds at the end. shit, man. don’t get attached don’t get attached don’t get attached
something i really appreciate is that i knew this fandom really adores bakugou (and i say this as someone who literally doesn’t know shit about the bnha fandom), so i assumed he’d be one of those assholes who gets glorified by the narrative because it’s okay if he’s an asshole as long as he’s talented and handsome uwu he’s just being snarky haha how funny!! i mean yes he is an asshole but he isn’t glorified by the narrative, the narrative doesn’t hide at all that, while not totally evil, he’s a complicated character who genuinely can be unlikable and is kinda fucking awful. so that’s a pleasant surprise. i thought the narrative would revolve around him more b/c the fandom’s so fond of him but it doesn’t and i’m really glad, the whole class is really great (and imo the school too, i’ll talk worldbuilding later) and they all deserve focus.
i’m usually incredibly fond of villains, but i also mostly read YA fantasy, where the villains are very often attractive young characters who are snarky, charismatic types who draw the reader in and are way too likable. AC villains weren’t like that for me (although i ended up liking them anyway, just blame my friends lmao). the villains in BNHA so far aren’t quite the attractive young character archetypes either, but i really like them anyway. i wanna know their motivations a lot. what’s the relationship between nomu and shigaraki (i kinda already brotp it)? what led shigaraki and kurogiri to want to kill all might so badly? who made nomu the way he was? if the motive is a personal grudge or a tragic backstory, fuck. i’m weak as fuck for personal grudges and/or tragic backstories in villains, alright?
also, shigaraki’s hands shit + the way his quirk behaves/is animated is this level of slightly surreal horror — not really over-the-top gory/melodramatically creepy, but definitely disturbing — that’s an aesthetic i’m quite fond of, although only in moderation.
uraraka’s power, while hardly unusual, is imo something that can go really far and has incredible potential. it’s definitely gone amazing places in past characters who have the same power in other fiction. i wanna see her develop it.
and now i’m gonna talk worldbuilding, because while i’m not that great at analyzing it or doing it myself — i’m decent enough to pull together a convincing world for my fiction, but that’s about it, since i’m not great at understanding how the world works, let alone how changes would affect it on a wide scale — superpowers are something i’m quite fond of.
so, there’s this one YA series called the reckoners, by brandon sanderson. he writes a lot of stuff about people with magic, and i love his work, especially the reckoners. i am bringing this up for two things. one, the protagonist is also a guy with no powers who’s unusually obsessed with the intricacies of the superpowered people and their superpowers in a world where superpowers just started randomly appearing and became integrated into society, although he’s obsessed because of a vastly different reason from izuku.
two, the worldbuilding is really good, and the powers are unique. it’s very different from your typical story about superpowers. in my opinion, every kind of basic power — telekinesis, manipulating elements, reading/controlling minds — has been used. i wouldn’t say it’s impossible to come up with new basic powers, but it’s damn near close. but what’s good about superpowers nowadays, what makes them interesting and original, is not the power itself, but its limits. how far can it go? what are the weaknesses? how can it be used?
i’m gonna give an example i’m really fond of — regalia from the reckoners. she’s a character who first appears in the second book. regalia has the ability to manipulate water, which we’ve all seen plenty of times in fiction, right? but it’s not just typical shit like “oh, look at this huge tide destroying a building!” my memory is fuzzy, but one of the things she can do is use the reflections created by water as windows.
it’s hard to explain, but like, if you look into a puddle (and remember, water can reflect), and she’s paying attention, she can appear and look back at you and talk, like in a mirror. she’s able to communicate with you through it. she can keep an eye on the city she rules over because she flooded the entire place with water, making it a sort of island, and is able to watch everyone through its reflections. now that’s something new, even though water powers have been done to death.
i like how bnha handles the drawbacks of superpowers — it makes a little more unique. i’m not entirely pleased, but:
one post i’ve read on howtofightwrite (an excellent tumblr, writers who write action or anything involving combat should check it out!) is how, realistically, if you have super strength, every time you actually use it to anywhere near its fullest potential, it will fucking shatter your body. which is kinda what’s happening to izuku, i’ll explain in a sec. but like, if you punch someone, your knuckles hurt afterwards. except izuku’s punches are super super strong, so it hurts him way more than the normal person.
so i think that’s good! it’s a nice twist on how super strength usually works! but i’m still a bit displeased, because seriously, super strength is not at all new and it’s implied he’ll learn to control it instead of continuing to just have to deal with this particular drawback. all might learned to control it, which i don’t see how it makes physical sense, but whatever, fuck it, magic is magic. so i don’t think the blowback (looking for a word here?) resulting from his punches are actually because of realistic physical reasons TM that i just theorized, it’s just magic/being unable to control it, which is sad because c’mon, science and magic working together is cooler instead of “he got used to it by getting Good at his powers!”, but oh well. i’m not a doctor, anyway
honestly, i’m kinda disappointed that the most powerful heroes have super strength/superspeed, and that’s the only twist on it, and not even a terribly big one if izuku’s just gonna learn to control it through the power of experience. it’s not unique or new and i’d like to see something a little cleverer, i guess? like, i really like the idea of people adjusting to their powers and any drawbacks through just intelligence and the power of science and technology and wit, instead of practice/improvement upon the ability itself.
anyway, enough about izuku’s power. something else i’d like to see addressed is the emotional impact of izuku being quirkless all his life, and suddenly he has a power and everyone thinks he’s amazing. because it sounds like being quirkless fucked him up a ton. the protag of the reckoners is powerless and makes the best of it, and that’s what i really appreciate about the series — he never ever gets a power, he just figures out how to get through terrible life-or-death situations based on wit and his allies and cleverness and being amazing because you can still do amazing things without being born with those things. while i’m not saying izuku needed to take that route — what is it when he’s thought all his life he’s inferior, worshipped this one guy who turns out to be horribly vulnerable, and suddenly he’s got one of the most powerful quirks out there? (im assuming this gets addressed later though)
something else: how does society restructure itself now that everyone has a quirk? here’s the best thing about the reckoners: the people with the powers are the bad guys. like, not “oh, some people misuse their quirks” but almost everyone does, and what all the superpowered ones do, after they suddenly get their powers, is basically taken over the world. they’ve set up this tyrannical government in the usa where different superpowered people rule the cities and it’s basically a dystopia with superpowers, but the superpowered ones aren’t the rebels, they’re the oppressors. it’s a great twist on the typical superhero narrative. it changes the structure of society a lot. think legend of korra, but worse, more pronounced, a more oppressive regime.
so like, how does the world in bnha change now that 80% of people have a quirk? i really wanna know. UA is a start, but there’s got to be more to it than “there are schools trained to teach heroes, quirkless people feel bad about themselves, and heroes fight villains. and the villains don’t like the heroes because of that.” give! me! more! you don’t have to write me an encyclopedia of information (dear matsui, thank you for building your characters so much shit like the rollbook info exists, but not everyone does that) but what else is there? there has to be more than that.
some of the superpowers are interesting, yeah, but none of them stick out so much. i’ve read too much stuff about superpowers to be easily impressed, but really, “school of heroes” has been done a lot and while i like bnha a lot so far, they’re gonna have to go above and beyond what they’re currently doing to really impress me. rn i’m really curious what they’re gonna do with mineta ‘cause his power seems so fucking useless but he’s clearly there for a reason (how’d he pass the entrance exam?). the other powers don’t stick out much to me. stuff like tsu’s frog quirk or todoroki’s half-hot, half-cold shit (instead of just one) are just unconventional enough for me to raise an eyebrow, but not much more.
anyway. hoping they expand on that. but the worldbuilding isn’t horrendous or anything, i’m really enjoying all the powers and the worldbuilding’s good enough, just could be taken a lot farther. like, the potential is wow. god, i already love the characters so much, though
oh, also. not interested into getting into bnha fandom or the manga as of right now, and this blog is staying AC, but talking about it is still fun (i like discussing things!) and i’m gonna watch s2 when it comes out.
