A Tamaraw for prompt 13 of the @wildlifewednesdaychallenge The Tamaraw is a miniature buffalo found only on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. In what I guess is an example of island dwarfism, the tamaraw stands at just 100 to 105cm at its shoulder and is 2.2m long with an additional 60cm for its tail. Both sexes have distinctive V shaped horns, more reminiscent of a goat than a cow. A solitary creature, tamaraws prefer tropical highland forests where they feed on grasses in glades. Tameraws are listed as critically endangered, with numbers estimated at less than 300 adults although it is hard to be sure because they shy away from human contact. Numbers have declined largely due to habitat loss, forest fragmentation, disease spread by domestic cattle and being hunted for food. . . @ecowarrior8888 @lizzywatercolor #WildlifeWednesdayChallenge #Tamaraw #illustration #IllustrationArt #WildlifeIllustration #AnimalIllustration #AnimalArtist #MultimediaIllustration https://www.instagram.com/p/CfU0oNMowRQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Is this a manatee? Nope! is a Dugong! Sadly a vulnerable species. I learnt the difference for this challenge: Dugongs are cousins of manatees and share a similar plump appearance, but have a dolphin fluke-like tail. And unlike manatees, which use freshwater areas, the dugong is strictly a marine mammal. Commonly known as "sea cows," dugongs graze peacefully on sea grasses in shallow coastal waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.
This painting is one of the weekly challenges from @wildlifewednesdaychallenge Go check them out if you haven't already, they're a lot of fun!
PS: I was too lazy to scan today so you can expect a (double) post soon where you'll be able to see the painting up close 😊

The first @wildlifewednesdaychallenge prompt for 2023 is a European mink which is a close relative of the European polecat and Siberian weasel. These critically endangered, semi-aquatic mustelids look softer, less murderous and cuter than the better known American mink. The European mink's numbers are in decline due to a combination of competition from it's American namesake, climate change, hybridisation and habitat loss. @lyndabridgesart #EuropeanMink #Mink #WildlifeWednesdayChallenge #WildlifeIllustration #WildlifeArt #illustration #MixedMediaIllustration #AnimalArtist https://www.instagram.com/p/CnUsE3Gr6ZW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A pair of African Penguins for prompt 21 of the @wildlifewednesdaychallenge Also known as the Black Footed or Jackass Penguin (due to its call sounding like a donkey's bray), the African penguin can be found along the coast of South Africa and Nambia. Standing between 60 and 70cm tall, these birds are favourites in zoos across the world as they do not require particularly low temperatures, can be kept in outdoors enclosures and adapt well to captivity. In the wild however, their numbers have been declining steadily and without mitigation were predicted to be extinct by 2026. @lyndabridgesart #AfricanPenguin #WildlifeWednesdayChallenge #WildlifeArt #illustration #AnimalArtist https://www.instagram.com/p/CmwvxEyon2T/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A kākāpō for prompt 17 of the @wildlifewednesdaychallenge. Also known as the owl parrot, these large, heavy, flightless, nocturnal parrots from New Zealand are critically endangered, with 252 living individuals all of whom are named, tagged and confined to small islands where all predators have been removed. Once widespread across New Zealand, the kākāpō suffered from overhunting from the Maori but was almost wiped out by the introduction of predators such as ferrets, rats, cats and stoats during British colonisation. The kākāpō is up to 64cm long and can weigh 4kg. It lacks the keel on its breastbone for attaching flight muscles but uses it's wings for balance and as a parachute when descending from trees. The kākāpō is an excellent climber and can ascend high into the tree canopy hunting for fruits, seeds, leaves and shoots. As with many parrots, the kākāpō is long lived and can survive for at least 100 years. They are adapted for a nocturnal lifestyle, with forward facing eyes, whiskers and a facial disk similar to an owl, which directs the quietest of sounds into their ears. I used the contents of a recent #ScrawlrBox to paint this bird, putting the #Pintor neon paint pens to good use. I added a black and red paint pen from other boxes and the original reference is from the New Zealand government's Department for Conservation's Flickr page, found via Wikimedia Commons. @ecowarrior8888 @lizzywatercolor #WildlifeWednesdayChallenge #Kakapo #OwlParrot #NewZealandWildlife #parrot #bird #BirdArt #BirdIllustration #Illustration #IllustrationArt #AnimalArtist #MixedMediaArt #PaintPens #AcrylicPaintPens https://www.instagram.com/p/Chx8o4Io-C-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A smalltooth sawfish for prompt 16 of the @wildlifewednesdaychallenge Growing to over 5.5m, the smalltooth sawfish is a formidable looking animal preferring coastal waters of depths of no more than 8 meters, although adults will venture into deeper water. It looks like a cross between a ray and a shark, with it's namesake saw like snout or rostrum acting as a sensory organ, a probe and a weapon for either hunting or defence. Native to the tropical and subtropical Atlantic waters it can be found around the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, but it's historical range was much bigger and coveted the coastal waters of 47 countries. The smalltooth sawfish's numbers have declined due to a combination of entanglement in fishing nets and habitat loss, particularly suitable breeding sites. @ecowarrior8888 @lizzywatercolor #WildlifeWednesdayChallenge #SmalltoothSawfish #Sawfish #SawfishIllustration #illustration #IllustrationArt #AnimalArt #AnimalArtist https://www.instagram.com/p/ChKYwYmjhQP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A gouache illustration of a Blue Whale for prompt 4 of the Wildlife Wednesday Art Challenge. This behemoth of a whale is the largest animal that ever lived on land or in the sea, with a maximum length just shy of 30m. A filter feeder the Blue Whale can be found in any ocean and it's numbers were once plentiful but was hunted to the point of extinction by whalers. While hunting is now banned, this beautiful creature is still endangered and at risk due to ship strikes, pollution, ocean noise and climate change. Painted using Artful Gouache in my sketchbook. @Wildlifewednesdaychallenge @lyndabridgesart @Artfulbox #WildlifeWednesdayChallenge #illustration #IllustrationArt #GouacheIllustration #WildlifeIllustration #BlueWhale #BlueWhaleIllustration #AnimalArtist https://www.instagram.com/p/CpIXyQhI8rP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

@wildlifewednesdaychallenge is back with a new host @lyndabridgesart and hence I took a break from festive art to draw prompt 19 - a California Condor. This iconic vulture has a huge 3m wingspan and is so large they can be mistaken for a small distant aeroplane when in flight. The California Condor went extinct in the wild in 1987 but after a successful breeding program has been reintroduced but numbers still remain in their hundreds. . . #WildlifeWednesdayChallenge #CaliforniaCondor #WildlifeArt #Illustration #BirdIllustration #vulture #AnimalArtist #WildlifeIllustration #MixedMediaArt #BirdArt https://www.instagram.com/p/CljtouhrDFf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A golden bamboo lemur for prompt 18 of the @wildlifewednesdaychallenge As its name suggests, this lemur eats grasses, mostly enjoying giant bamboo. Interesting fact, each lemur will eat what would be almost 12 times a lethal dose of cyanide (found in the bamboo) for most other animals. The golden bamboo lemurs' numbers are in decline with less than 1000 individuals remaining. The main problems are hunting and habitat loss, with the bamboo they depend on either being cleared for agriculture or harvested. @ecowarrior8888 @lizzywatercolor #WildlifeWednesdayChallenge #GoldenBambooLemur #illustration #AnimalIllustration #WildlifeIllustration #PenDrawing #PenIllustration #AnimalArt https://www.instagram.com/p/CinSX6qIIg-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
