Food is a love language (1/?)

This has been chilling in my drafts since last fictober lol, for the prompt "Don't ruin this." (@/fictober) Thawing it out and reheating now that writer brain is back for five seconds.

(Note: Everything in this series is going to stand on its own, I'm just too lazy to title them separately when they're all about Gray cooking for Daph.)

Fandom: Mind Blind

Synopsis: Gray bakes cookies for Daphne (or, well, tries). (Gray's perspective of chapter five, sort of.)

"Don’t ruin this," Gray murmured to himself as he placed the baking sheet in the oven. (The cookies, his friendship with Daphne, or his friendship with Nick?) As if it would make a difference when he'd already formed the batter into droopy lumps.

...Were they supposed to look like that?

Gray wasn't a cook. (Nick would have agreed, if he weren't lying comatose in a hospital bed.)

But he had to try, for Daphne. She'd looked like a shadow of herself in the hospital and on the drive home. Her forced smile. Her watery laugh. She was the most resilient person that Gray knew, and it broke his heart to see her crumbling. To know that the only thing Nick would want was for his sister to be okay, and to know that he couldn't bear the double weight of their pain if he gave her a hug or squeezed her hand in reassurance.

To suspect that he wouldn't want to let go, which brought with it its own complications.

But baking cookies was almost as good, he figured. Food was a love language for the Wisemans. Whenever their parents drove down from Milwaukee, Hope sent a cooler of steamed buns filled with vegetables and love, and John always left Nick's kitchen stocked with apologetic sweets. And Nick...

Not that Gray wanted Daphne to think of him like her brother, exactly.

At least there was no chance of that happening. When the timer went off, Gray retrieved his batch of charred, rubbery, sour-smelling abominations.

He'd ruined them after all.

Maybe they would make her laugh.

They made her smile, at least, bright and wide and eye-crinkling. And she dropped by his office with, well, a real batch of cookies. He could taste her concern for him, soft and sweet.

He hugged her before she left, for too many reasons. Because he could now, because she looked like she needed it, because he wasn't fluent in food as a love language, but at least he could do this.

It felt like the most natural thing in the world, holding her against his chest and breathing in the unexpectedly sweet scent of her hair. So natural that he didn't let go until long after it was proper.

"I can give you a hug now," he explained quickly. "So, I did."

Daphne let out a breathless laugh, her cheeks glowing pink. "You know you can---" She cleared her throat. "Um, never mind. Nick says, he, um. See you."

Gray watched as she waved, flashed a warm smile, nearly smacked into the door, and finally exited his office.

Maybe he'd ruined their friendship.

Maybe that was okay.

@doulyeah and @winterkeys tagged me (thank you!!) to talk about my fanfic icks, so here we go!

"Phonetic" spelling because someone has an accent. First of all, we get it, they have an accent. But also, as a non-native speaker, it takes a lot of time and effort to decipher that kind of dialogue. Each language has its own way of "spelling phonetically", so it doesn't make sense to me most of the time.

Villanising a woman because she is in a relationship with someone of a mlm ship. They always turn them into jealous, toxic, manipulative abusers. Even if the character isn't showing up that much, I won't enjoy the fanfic.

Long paragraphs. I have swiss brain syndrome. I'll get lost in there.

There's probably more, but these are the ones I could actually put into words the reason why I don't like them that much.
