My dnd group and I have been playing Curse of Strahd for a few months now, and all of our characters have had a few Tarokka card readings. I thought it would be fun to design the main cards we all pulled, and I wanted to really base them off of our characters.

So, to start us off, we have Belladonna Wixx, @wintert-ide ‘s necromantic wizard/ cleric who hates death, but is also dying herself due to a pretty awful curse (long story). She is the older sister to my boy Atropa and the two siblings are really close and basically attached at the hip.

A lot has happened already in our game, but we have a long way to go still. Barovia is a scary place and we are all just trying to make it out alive.

Reflecting on Beate Gütschow's Work

Breaking down the artist's way of work, investigating the 'I' series.

Transferring landscape paintings which incorporates conditioned visual perceptions to photography, Beate Gütschow digitises anolog photographs by following principles of studio paintings inspired from the Baroque times to the 18th century.

“You only need two or three of these rules, and the photos look like paintings, because that is how we have been trained to perceive things,” she explains.

Challenging the norms of perception, she’s able to detach herself from conventional image schemes to create her own reality, portraying an attempt to describe the object’s conditions.

Approaching new interpretations of traditional pictorial representations, Beate abandons her natural and urban scenes and dabbles on a more staged and confined space. The interiors have nothing in common with the daylight-flooded interiors of Dutch painting. Reminding us of advertising agencies, laboratories or offices and even photo studios, the various contemporary locations which are functionalistic rooms which allows a variety of things appear to stand under careful scrutiny or, in the case of the photo studios, to be in the process of being turned into “images.” There is a pause, a short delay, before, one can imagine, the objects are rearranged again.

Using the aspect of flattening to make images, the two objects are viewed from overhead and depicted approximately life-size in the illuminated image. Identified, the black covering of the automatic transmission and rod next to it, assuming, linked to an automotive background as well. The meaning of their juxtaposition may not be clear at first glance, photographed against a wall of white tiles reinforced by the white flash from the front, the image is evidently attempting to describe the objects’ conditions. The work’s title can be translated as “Are you ready?”

Beate Gütschow

“representation means not only a (technical) relationship to the object photographed but also a particular relationship between this photographic record and the viewer  communications that can be read or interpreted in a particular way” (Magazine Kunst Bulletin (Zurich), 3/2008)

Gütschow creates visual practises based on the potential of manipulation, exhibiting highly produced and clearly arranged photographic images. Making all of their image content entirely fictional. 

“The pre-photographic method is a different way of approaching the image. With photography you are usually forced to choose a piece of reality, so the result is a framed section of this reality that has been extracted from a much larger situation. Using a pre-photographic method, reality is not the starting point; the starting point is the blank canvas, or in my case the empty document, the digital sheet of paper: I am free to do whatever I want with this space; I can place all sorts of things inside it.” (Gütschow)

Gütschow's photos are all montages made up of various images taken by them. Using Photoshop to combine pieces from various shots into a single image. Creating these apocalyptic urban settings that appear real yet make you think twice.

 Gütschow has also used this concept to draw attention to the erroneous viability concept of modernism by using faultless architectural structures and urban plans. Creating a real world that could become the future implies the concepts of fact and fiction and debates about reformulating conceptual processes within art. 

Beate Gütschow's work is an excellent example of photography manipulation. The black-and-white composition aids in manipulating the scene, conveying to the viewer that his photographs are a framed section of reality. I liked how Gütschow said, “With photography, you are usually forced to choose a piece of reality, so the result is a framed section of this reality that has been extracted from a much larger situation.” It emphasises how we, as photographers, have power over what others perceive and how we can modify reality and the scene presented to create art based on our preferences.

I chose this series by Beate Gutschow to reflect on because I enjoy the composition she used. The style of these shots appears to be natural and untouched, however elements of the photos have been manipulated, but it's been done in a way that doesn't appear obvious to the viewer.

Her work is so minimal, but effective. This image is one of her more subtle works that appears very realistic. Some of her other works are a little more obviously manipulated because they're just a little too perfect looking. I love all the shapes and lines that make up this photo and the black and white element makes it calming to look at.

The planning fantasies of the 1970s are exposed as failed utopias that “tip over into the threatening emptiness and decay of what has become an unworthy future” (Katja Blomberg). I feel this quote sums up her work very well. Her photos are almost unsettling but with calming elements also. Sampling is something I want to understand more and try to use for this semesters project.

These three images from this series bring together the themes I get from the artists intention. Responding to Post-War era modernity with desolate landscapes in tune with the concept of pure utility and stripping out character. The style itself intentionally takes out the natural elements of photography. Its almost flattened nature due to the technique takes out any focus or specificity that helps develop the feeling of the abstract from humanity. Its very deliberate commentary on modernism is a much more subtle form of post-modernism for the era
