THE TRUTH OF RAPHAEL TORREZ ⤧ a wip intro by @you-are-my-neverland

tentatively titled: the truth of raphael torrez genre: dark academia, young adult, mystery narrative: limited third person, switching between the past and the present. mainly told in raphael’s perspective, but will eventually include others. featuring themes: unreliable narrator, lgbtq+ characters, poc characters, death, tragedy, memory/amnesia, toxic/abusive relationships, destruction of beauty, desire to escape, illusions, distorted reality, love of all kinds, religion, grief, coming of age current stage: revamping and drafting (originally was a side project for 2k19 nano except now i’m making it better)

TIME REWINDS

Six months ago, Raphael Torrez transferred to elite Aster Academy in the wake of his brother’s death. Struggling to deal with his internalized survivor’s guilt and grief at his brother’s death, Raphael is prepared to sink instead of swim.

However, all at Aster Academy is not how it seems—especially the elite society of students called the Nightingales, a quartet consisting of the impetuous Paz Nguyen, eccentric Nova Quartz, expressive and artistic Kaito Kobayashi, and the conflicting but charismatic Elliot Dupont. 

Amidst his newfound friend, bold Imogen Lewis’, warnings to stay away from them and his two roommates—cagey, quiet Luka Xu and bohemian Clarence Ashton—Raphael finds himself drawn to the Nightingales all the same. Soon, he is invited into their inner circle and subsequently begins to float instead of drown, drawn onto a path rebellion, philosophy, freedom, and disillusioned dreams and reality.

But in the midst of a hurricane, there comes a point when one must reach the eye of the storm and see the terror for what it truly is. 

The Nightingales were never what they seemed to be.

AND GOES FORWARD

One month ago, Raphael awoke in a hospital room, severely injured and alone. As he heals and recuperates, he is visited by his mother, doctors, nurses, and police officers. They ask him questions. They try to break him—his mind, his memory, his sanity.

They ask him, what do you remember?

He asks them, what happened to my friends?

They never give him an answer.
