15-Day BL Challenge in 1 Night!

I'm more of a lurker than a poster but Tumblr's my fave place to wallow in BLness. My 2nd favorite place is the spreadsheet where I track the shows I've watched (172 completed in just over a year), so @negrowhat 's challenge was irresistible. I'm gonna cram my answers in one post. Here goes!

Fave OG Actor Pairing: Some of the ones I think of as OG are only like 4 years old, so this was tough. And the 18 shows that have gotten my top score aren't very old. But I went through those 18 and picked the oldest, and it was the 2018 Korean microfilm Some More. Because it's so short it's super rewatchable, but even if I wasn't able to watch the whole thing a half dozen times (which I have), I'd still have gone back & watched the sweet moments and sex scene about 25 times (which I have). So I guess my fave OG actor pairing is Park Chan Ung and Kim Joon Bum! How they got me so deeply invested in their love in mere minutes is beyond me, but they did!

Fave Rookie Actor Pairing: Does Japan do the CP thing that Thailand does? I don't think so, but one couple I wish had about a dozen more BL series together lined up are Kouhei Higuchi and Atsuki Mashiko of My Personal Weatherman! Their chemistry was visceral and they're too pretty to be believed.

Side Dish That Should've Been the Main Course: While I enjoyed the main pairing a lot, they were nothing compared to the crazy rollercoaster side plot (how'd it go from so funny to SO dark to so sexy to so sweet and wholesome like that??) of Vegas/Pete from KinnPorsche!

Fave Ship Dynamic: Obvs from answers 2 & 3 I am not against D/s ships at ALL. Also a sucker for tough-but-submissive-bodyguard with mafia-brat-prince. Honestly I like tons of different dynamics from innocent to toxic, but one that gives me major butterflies is a guy who thinks he's straight but when confronted with the idea of liking another guy, doesn't have a macho freakout or run away, just kind of straightforwardly & sincerely searches his feelings until he figures it out. And then takes care of his baby. Why's that so HOT and sweet? Some of my fave examples: Pete/Ae in Love By Chance, Le Jian/Amber from DNA Says Love You, and Ida/Aoki from My Love Mix-Up!

Biggest Flop: This is expectations vs. execution, right? There's loads of shows I've abandoned, some I've stuck with for no good reason, etc., that are way worse than what I consider my personal biggest let-down. I was so enamored of Perth from LBC that I assumed he could do no wrong, and the bully-to-lover, rich/poor pairings often do it for me. So I guess I just assumed Dangerous Romance would be amazing, and it was REALLY good for a couple episodes. It wasn't the worst thing I ever saw, but so much of it just ... felt ... flat. Very surprising.

Fave Line From Your Fave Series: Well I know my fave series--Cherry Magic Thailand was the most perfect, entrancing, heartwarming series EVER, OMG, it was staggeringly good and stuck the landing in a way few shows have managed. I can't really think of one standout line--the script was so on point & there were HUNDREDS of sweet tingly moments. There were some epic ones in ep11 tho: When Achi says "The voice inside your head is so loud" and Karan (the boldest he's ever been) replies "Don't worry; soon you won't be able to read my mind anymore." (But then clearly uses that power one more time to gain the sweetest nonverbal consent EVER.) Then, Karan: "Do you regret losing your power?" Achi: "I'd regret not loving you." (OMG how I squealed.)

Fave Villain: This was so tough. An over-the-top villain I loved to hate (and an actor I loved from his sweetie-pie green-flag role in SCOY) was obvs Heng Asavarid as Chalothon in The Sign. But an actor who was so excellent at being loathsome and malicious toward the main couple, with just enough of a redemption arc that I didn't totally despise the character by the end (but did hate most of the way through): Park Hae In as Eun Ji (Jae Won's ex) in The Eighth Sense. It was a typical "faen fatale" role but so well done. So a tie between 2 totally different takes on the destructive ex.

The Trope You Hate Except When It's "This Series": OK, "hate" is a strong word for how I feel about the drop-of-rain-makes-you-ill so love-interest-takes-care-of-you trope. It's OK. But holy SHIT is it overused. Holy shit. I sigh resignedly when I realize we're going there. EXCEPT. When P'Phayu goes to visit Rain in Love in the Air when he's sick, and his version of caregiving? Forcibly applying medicine in the form of a rectal suppository. It is so funny, weirdly sexy, very in line with their dynamic (doesn't get in the way of their romance moments later at all), & it shoves a big middle finger up the overoveroverused sick-bed trope.

Most Visually Pleasing Love Scene: Okay, THE scene in The Sign is the clear winner in my & many people's books. But there are so many runners-up: the post-race one in Love in the Air. Just about every one in Pit Babe (both couples) & My Personal Weatherman. (A lot of other faves don't quite qualify as visually or emotionally pleasing--lustfully pleasing should be a 3rd category in this challenge!)

Most Emotionally Pleasing Love Scene: Again, I have a clear winner: Cherry Magic Thailand. So full of emotion, so well deserved, so everything. Sigh. But lots of runners-up: same scene in The Sign, both kissing scenes in DNA Says Love You (tame but soo emotionally satisfying), Ray & Sand's camper reunion in Only Friends, the post-prison love scenes for both couples in Kiseki: Dear to Me, the 1st time in I Feel You Linger in the Air ...

Breakup That Should've Stayed Broken Up: Maybe it's because I try to be choosy in what I watch all the way thru or maybe I'm a big softy who tends to root for every couple no matter how lame. In all my completed shows, I could only think of 2 breakups where I wasn't at all invested in them getting back together (and maybe against it): Tian/Poon, What Zabb Man and Top/Mew, Only Friends.

Wedding You Wish You Had an Invite To: If we're talking weddings that actually appeared in the show, Achi and Karan's in Cherry Magic Thailand, obvs! If it's hypothetical weddings, I'd be desperate to go to one of ANY of the characters in Playboyy! I'd wear a bulletproof vest & bring my own flask of booze, but it would be the trashy chaos-filled social event of a lifetime.

Give 5 Good Boys a Gold Star: Just 5? OK, some I haven't mentioned yet. 1. Shin Woo, Light on Me, 2. Palm, Never Let Me Go, 3. Mohk, Last Twilight, 4. Thun, He's Coming to Me, 5. Neua, Secret Crush on You. Best boys!

SBMS Clowning Series ☀️ v.6 { finale }

It was a good run and we have been fed very well. if something else comes up then i’ll post an extras version of this clowning series. ^^

this scene at the finale, where they won a production award and jian bing was making her speech. how she said that last year, she gained a good production partner ( referring to shengyang ) and like you could tell that it wasn’t just work related that’s she is talking about. it reminds us of that time in TTXS where WYB said that in the past year, he gained a good friend — XZ. and like we (cpfs) believe that it’s more than that, they both gained a life partner.

this is another example of what seems to be a trend in this drama. lol. maybe because it’s modern so they can use these scenes & lines. i don’t know. the coincidences and similarities of things that happened to them irl making it in the drama is something we can’t ignore.

• In XZ studio’s post, they shared more behind the scenes photos and the caption:

it’s similar to what zz said before in an interview when talking about WWX. He said, return him to the one he loves ( LWJ ).

there is also a photo where you could see the number 9. It’s actually 19, which is in reference to the event his character in the show is attending. they blurred out almost all of the background to emphasize on him so why leave the 9? Maybe they can cause the big event in the finale is this award and him going onstage with Jian Bing. I’m a clown so the 9 is a great coincidence because who just celebrated their 9th debut anniversary???

• GG’s finale post on his weibo account too. Let’s clown on the time of posting, 19:50 9/5. Also how he mentions the sun which is supposedly to describe Shengyang and the name of the show itself. But the photo he shared is that of a sunflower. He really loves it. It’s why 🌻 is such a favorite symbol among BXGs!

The way Qi Rong acts towards Jian Lan, I think he had a crush on her back before Xianle fell.

He would have known her - she visited the palace several times. She was one of the catalysts for the downfall. Her case was probably gossip in the palace for a bit.

But more than that, Qi Rong tells us she won beauty competitions. Qi Rong knew she ended up in a brothel. Qi Rong recognises her before anyone else, including her ex!

And he's also ridiculously butt hurt! Even by Qi Rong standards, he has beef. He doesn't like her anymore but I think he feels vindicated.

Like, she obviously rejected him at some point. Hell, she probably laughed in his face. Qi Rong was a well known asshole after all, there's only so much a pretty face and title can get you.

Also with some of the things he says about "Yong An" and "peasants" regarding the father and her sinking so "low", I might even hazard that Jian Lan rejected him on account of his heritage as well.

Jian Lan was vehemently anti Yong An and Qi Rong was half Yong An on his father's side. Sure the general population probably didn't know that, but Jian Lan would have visited the palace, her family were important officials, so she would know the gossip!

In my head, he's throwing her own words back at her. He's laughing because fate has brought her so low after she looked down on him.

there hadn’t been a place at home for stories, so jiyu hadn’t grown up on them, or at least not the ones that didn’t focus on military achievement. of course, there had been history: tales of failed campaigns and ancestors that had won decisive battles. his grandfather painted as a hero, family legends and disappointments that jiyu’s mother would tell him about as she tucked him in.

all of his bedtime fantasies had centered around war. it had taken jiyu joining the navy, bright-eyed and excitable, for anyone to tell him about myths predating his family’s name. when he thinks back on it he recalls many nights spent sitting on shipdecks, talking to pass the time and beat back the monotony of life at sea. he’d been told of monsters in the depths beneath them and birds the size of mountains, men dying of long-forgotten curses and of blades lost in battles fought long ago. jiyu had never taken any of it at face value, but he was a sailor like any other after a few months, adding his own twists to the classics of seafaring entertainment. he hadn’t imagined that he’d have experiences straight out of the horror stories they made up in the middle at the night with the sort of breathless laughter that accompanies good fun and a suppressed shudder when looking back into the black of a moonless night.

but here he is now. gone a month, the nurses had told him, unconscious for another three days; he has trouble wrapping his mind around those facts, but his body remembers. there’s a weight to his limbs he’s never felt before, even a week in recovery. exhaustion, set in deep, like he hasn’t had restful sleep in a long time. nevermind that he’s spent most of recent memory with his eyes closed and his mind skipping out on him.

and then, of course, his skin-turned-stone. the world is muffled on his right side, his ear cool to the touch. after waking up, after seeing it in the mirror for the first time, jiyu thought about cutting all of it off: losing his hearing and the skin of his thigh would be nothing in comparison to losing his mind. it might not spread, the nurse had said, and all jiyu had heard was it might. and now he’s stuck, waiting for others to find information lost to time, taking scalding baths and coating stiff flesh with vinegar. there’s no way to make peace with it and nothing to do about it. jiyu, before his illness has turned him into carved rock, has lost the ability to move forward.

tldr; jiyu's sick, thinks he's dying, and is losing his hearing on his right side. until he's cured in the seventh month of the year, this will affect his mood and the way he interacts with people. more info below:

jiyu and yerim were stuck in the spirit world for a full month (thread detailing their adventure incoming). they reappeared in the spirit wilds of dragonstone afterwards and jiyu returned to hari bulkan the moment he could (as acting head of house with jian still MIA).

he's afflicted with greyscale, a disease thought a myth that hasn't been heard of in thousands of years. greyscale leaves skin dead, stiff, and discoloured, with a stone-like appearance. greyscale is said to spread and leave men succumbing to madness before they turn to stone (and die). while jiyu's greyscale does worsen it doesn't spread, but he doesn't know this. jiyu, and anyone knowledgeable enough of the disease or close enough for him (or yerim) to have been told about this are operating under the assumption that he's dying.

jiyu's got greyscale in the following spots: - his left mid-thigh. the symptoms aren't bad; he's prone to shifting his weight to the other side, but not super bothered by this. - a tiny patch at the second joint of his left little finger, bad enough that he can't bend it. - his right ear. when jiyu returns from the spirit world his hearing on that side is muffled, but it gets continously worse over the next month until he can't hear anything at all. since it's a highly visible spot, everyone meeting him in person would be able to tell that something's up. in social situations he'll have a harder time engaging in group conversations, and his sense of balance will be off.

jiyu would not be forthcoming about this affliction being a death sentence. if your muse isn't close to him it might be possible that they would've heard about it through different channels, though.

he's going to be sticking around hari bulkan for the next few months while attempts are being made to find a cure. likely some desk work or training of recruits, no active duty. he's going to be losing his mind a little over this (man's going stir crazy).

but the good news is: he will be cured! currently plotted is that they find it in the seventh month, and suho's gonna come through on the dragon blood he needs to bounce back. he'll retain a few scars after and have issues with tinnitus (psychosomatic), but obviously that's no issue when the alternative is dying.

Digimon Tamers - Episode 6

The pace of this show is really slow...in a good way. Not filler-y, just lots of time for atmosphere and character development. Digimon Adventure had a clear formula for each episode, this one you don't quite know what you're going to get. Also, it's interesting to see the ratio of old digimon returning vs. new digimon. I'm glad it's a mix and not all new, less is more.

Notes:

Kay so Ruki is richy rich I guess. We see her fancy academy (with uniforms!) and her grandma basically lives in a Japanese-style mansion. Her inner conflicts appear to be that she's feeling kind of neglected by her too-busy mom (typical 2000s plot) and that she's bored because she's too good at card games lol. Boohoo Ruki. Her mom can't be that neglectful, at least she showed up briefly!

In her flashback Ruki's wearing a skull and crossbones shirt with a popped collar, black jacket. Okay, goth phase...(or maybe emo?) Relatable.

One of the TCG cards shown in the beginning is Andiramon from one of the movies! Cool little cameo.

Renamon moves very ninja-like. I thought it was a little weird looking when she floated into the darkness in one scene. Is floating one of her powers or is that more of a ~dramatic effect~ thing?

Love Ruki's little TCG/digivice utility belt. Not sure what the point of the belt around her leg is. Anime!

I swear every time they show a new dinosaur digimon I'm like "oh great, another Greymon/Agumon reskin." We have enough dinosaurs already! At least go for a dino with a different shape. I guess this new one is supposed to look like an Allosaurus. One positive thing I'll say is that I like that he's furry (or feathery I guess? His muzzle's all shaggy).

Maybe I'm just dumb, but this anime doesn't really warn you when it transitions into a flashback so I keep getting confused. When they showed Ruki winning the D1 Tournament I was just like "oh, I guess she won again" lol.

So Takato and Jian manifested their partners when they were feeling really passionate about them. With Ruki, all of the digimon come to her because she's so good at their card game lol. Renamon wants Ruki to be her tamer the most I guess so she "wins" and comes to the real world. That whole flashback was pretty weird. Why'd they make it so sinister?

Finally we get our first main bad guy! Impmon. I really, really like his design. He reminds me of Kuromi (Kuromi's boyfriend? lol) I also like his "impish" personality so far. Just a little troll. He reminds me of Demi Devimon a lot.

Impmon's awkward conversation with Renamon was really funny. It felt like she was like "Let me hear this guy out...oh wait...he's an idiot."

Is this the first time the "should tamers really be partners with digimon?" question has come up? I honestly don't remember. It could have come up in one of the manga or games or something. I think this is the first time a digimon is questioning it in the anime tho, so that's fun. I feel like it's inevitable in all of these mon series. Maybe Culumon will bring in an interesting angle since he's partner-less

Speaking of Culumon...his role in this episode was so random! He just pops up out of nowhere after Renamon/Kyubimon's fight with Dokugumon. I was like "Where did HE come from?" I feel like he had zero purpose in that scene...?

So the cards definitely work differently in the games vs. the anime. I guess to make them more flashy. It's interesting that you can use them to give one digimon another digimon's attributes, but that might be kind of awkward to implement in a TCG.

I think I've seen too many nine tailed foxes at this point because when Kyubimon was revealed I just kind of felt like "well...seen this design a buncha times." That being said, it does look really nice. You can't beat the classics! I don't really like all the yin-yang symbols tho, I think they look a little tacky (maybe just keep the one on the forehead).

So it seems like Renamon was able to digivolve once Ruki started seeing her as a living being. Another route they could have taken is to have Renamon go into a dark digivolution when Ruki was abusive. That could have been interesting. The arrested development probably makes more sense this early in the season though.
