You and I are no longer friends. We’ll be enemies if we ever cross paths again. And I may kill you if that happens. // Don’t kid yourself. I chose not to kill you only because I want to protect those who are dear to me. It has nothing to do with you.
— Seo Hwi & Nam Seon-ho, ep. 4 // Seo Hwi & Yi Bang-won, ep. 16
[ID: 6 pairs of gifs from “My Country: The New Age”, showing the parallels between two scenes Hwi shares with Seon-ho and with Bang-won respectively, the former edited to be gray and cyan, while the latter is soft orange and yellow with green highlights. Gifs 1 & 2: Seon-ho says “Why aren’t you asking? The reason why you were dragged there and why I went there.” & Bang-won says  “Why are you not asking the reason why I killed your father?” Gifs 3 & 4: Hwi replies with “Let’s talk another time.” & “I said I’d forget the past, so there is no reason for me to ask.” Gifs 5 & 6:  Seon-ho says “It was all me. I was the one who bribed the examiner and sent you here.” & Bang-won says “I submitted an appeal falsely accusing your father of corrupt deeds. Also, I bribed the deputy leader of the Black Snake Unit to give a false statement.” Gifs 7 & 8: Hwi says “Enough.” to Seon-ho & “Stop.” to Bang-won. Gifs 9 & 10: They both ignore him and continue. Seon-ho says “I had to get rid of the advance troops. That’s why I went there. To kill you guys.” & Bang-won says “I feared the sword of my teacher, Seo Geom, more than that of Choi Young. That is why I killed him.” Gifs 11 & 12: Hwi finally snaps and shouts “Enough!” at both of them, heartbroken and enraged. /End ID]

A redraw of a screenshot sent to me by @seamayweed (thanks for the inspiration!). I realized I'd never drawn Seon-ho and Bang-won before... anyway, I love drawing Bang-won's fan, it's so wide and dramatic.

Do you know what I would kill for? That Raul Esparza/Anne Hathaway/Audra McDonald Twelfth Night shot as MCTNA fanart with Hwi being pulled between Bang-won and Seon-ho.

Cover of Saudade
Tumblr media
Saudade- (n.) a nostalgic longing to be near again to something or someone that is distant, or that has been loved and then lost; “the love that remains” When Seon-ho's brother survived that fateful day, Nam Jeon sold him to Ihwaru in a fit of rage. Years later, an 18-year-old Seon-ho is now the most shamefully sought after kisaeng amongst Goryeo's rotten upper class. His reputation reaches far and wide- even to the ears of the young nobleman, Yi Bang Won, who intends to find out the reason for these rumours himself. This leads to years of painful love, a relationship of convenience and something dark and twisted that seeks to consume them all. OR kisaeng!Seon-ho has to deal with his political ambitions colliding with his messy love life for many years down the road

This show has officially hit "I'm just screaming the whole episode" status. Would I have loved for their first make-out session to be before he knows she's a woman? I mean, sure, but the way this scene shook out was basically perfect, as the waves of understanding wash across JJS's face and Hee Soo fully gives in to the part of her heart she's been trying to deny for three years. It's just so deliciously complex and contradictory, for both of them, their desire and love for each other woven through all those layers of deception and betrayal and scheming.
On the subject of betrayal, though... Like many people on this website, I agree that Yi In plans to make his nephew his heir and is working to discover who killed his brother. It's become increasingly obvious, but I kind of clocked it from the time jump, when it's established that in spite of a decently well-populated inner court, the man doesn't have a single child. If he had been sincere in stealing the throne for himself, surely his first priority would be to have his own son, which could then leave him free to dispose of his nephew, who living is always going to be a threat to his rule.
Now, I have nothing against the nephew. It's just that, as I have established, I think usurpation is quite sexy (unless a man is trying to usurp a woman, which is why Stephen of Blois can get fucked), and I would have loved for Yi In to be a true usurper. Monarchy is all bullshit anyway, right? To me, usurpation is like an acknowledgement that it's bullshit: if the occupant of the throne is solely determined through mistakes of nature, why shouldn't humans be able to seize destiny in their hands and take what they want? If the only qualification is being born to a certain parent at the right time, then why not just change that rule to suit your own intention? Especially when nature more often than not gets it wrong: it's hard to respect the legitimacy of Grand Prince Munseong, given that he is the heir of a man who clearly never should have been king.
But no, clearly we have to have Yi In be a noble leading man, so even if he does some bad things, it's in service of a worthy and legitimate goal. I don't hate it, I just liked it more for that one enchanted episode where it seemed like he might go full anti-hero. As it is, I guess I'll have to settle for him being a super-complicated and conflicted man played by an incredible actor, poor me!
(It's true that it hasn't been established for sure that Yi In took the throne for noble reasons, but to me that does very much look like where it's going.)

Hii Sea, I saw in your tags that you associate the color blue with Seon-ho and green with Sung-rok. So, I got curious, do you associate any colors with Hwi and Bang-won (and possibly why)?
Hi Lilja :DDD So clever of you to ask about colors since you know I always have MANY thoughts about that!!
Okay, let's start with Hwi... he may be red-coded and starts to wear it once he starts to work for Bang-won, but that doesn't feel like his true nature and I always think of yellow/gold as his color due to the canon sun symbolism for him, equally capable of nurturing life as destroying it. I also associate that color with his hero narrative and the hero's journey he goes through, taking him from a simple boy with simple dreams who doesn't have an easy life but is nonetheless happy with his small family/home (consisting of Yeon and Seon-ho) to someone who, in the wake of 'betrayal' and war trauma and the loss of his home (all he wants is to go home, but what do you do when you return from war only to find your home is no longer there? that your sister has forgotten you and your friend has become a stranger?), schemes and backstabs as ruthlessly as anyone else in the show in pursuit of his goals and later revenge, uncaring of who he hurts along the way; to finally remember and rediscover his heart again, the simple dreams he once had - that all he ever wanted was a simple, happy life surrounded by his loved ones. That they are his country and he wants to protect them. That he wants to go home. He regrets, repents, tries to understand, forgives and accepts, apologizing to Seon-ho who usually always ended up taking the brunt of his anger and is arguably the one he hurt the most with his schemes/quest for revenge. He will never be that simple, joyful boy in the beginning again and he will never be able to wipe the red from his ledger, neither of them will be able to, but underneath the dirt and blood there's still gold. There always will be. He finally comes home to Seon-ho.
Bang-won is true red for me due to us seeing him in that color from the start and his line about all the blood he spilled for his father seeping into his skin like tattoo ink. He's a hunter and killer and was forced to stain his hands red when killing Poeun to protect his family and his father's revolution, for which he takes the blame. Of course he has his own ambitions as well and his path to the throne and reign as King Taejong are very much drenched in blood to consolidate the work of his predecessors and lay down the unshakable foundation of a five hundred year dynasty. He thinks he's the only one fit to be King and lead Joseon to its first red rising dawn, and sacrifices everything at the altar of the throne, including his own feelings and the people he loves, even family, leaving him in a position where he is above everyone else but also tragically alone, which reminds me of what Haksan tells Ha-seon in The Crowned Clown (ep. 8, 00:18:09) about what it means to be a king that I think describes Bang-won perfectly:
"A king cannot exercise his power as he wishes. The throne he sits on is for an immoral beast, one that feasts on flesh and blood. To protect that seat and the nation, he must sacrifice all he has, even his own heart. That is his cruel destiny."
Thank you for sending me this ask - it was very fun to think about! :D 💙
