a few early young nefario concepts and a minions' origin concept from the first minions movie as shown in Eric Guillon's new art book. originally, nefario was considered for the lead role in minions as well as being their creator, but the story went another route.

So I recently watched the first Despicable Me again and felt pretty bad for Gru. That flashback sequence was honestly kinda painful. ;-;

I like to believe that dr. Nefario would have done something for him at some point, seeing how friendly and encouraging he was towards the little guy. It seemed like he developed an immediate soft spot for the kid, bless him.

As much as I really like some of the headcanons about young Nefario having morals against killing and whatnot, I always come back to his canon characterization in the main Despicable Me movies. Especially the second one when he kidnaps Minions to turn them into monsters and help El Macho conquer the world. He was okay with this plan up until El Mucho turned against Gru’s family.

If anything Gru would be against killing people. As I’ve said once, he’s not in world domination business; he just performs impressive larcenies. And since Nefario works for Gru, he builds inventions which are harmless (most of the time).

In that regard, all those fanworks when Nefario goes into moralizing rants, sound rather OOC. But I will say that Butterfly Effect handled it the best - with Nefario starting as a moral character who’s against killing, but having the villainy rubbed of off him and slowly turning him into less moral person.
