Merthur Kiss Fest 2019 Masterlist

The Merthur Kiss Fest has concluded for yet another year! We're sad to see it go, but so very glad that it happened. Quick apology for the wait, as this was meant to go up a bit ago already. But thank you all for your patience. <3

We have a total of (drumroll please)... 61 works this year! That's incredible!!

A huge thank you and round of applause to our amazing writers and artists for their wonderful contributions, whose hard work is at the heart and soul of this fest, as well as to the creator and my fellow mod, @arthur-of-the-pendragons, who did most of the work putting this together and keeping it running, and last but not least, to the rest of the community who spread the word, shared the work, and left kudos and comments!

I know I speak for the both of us when I say that none of this would've been possible without the love, dedication, and generosity of the Merlin community. So from the bottom of our tiny little fangirl hearts, Thank you. Under the cut is the masterlist of all the works. I would like to ask that the creators check over it and let me know ASAP if there's any mistakes, or anything I missed! Thank you!

He was a good swimmer, better than most of Arthur’s knights and he caught up with Arthur quickly, briefly ducking and diving underneath the water to emerge just in front of him with a grin and water streaming down his face, his hair plastered against his skull, his ears seemingly more prominent than usual. Arthur felt his earlier confusion slip away. It was just Merlin. Clumsy, bumbling, ridiculous Merlin with his silly ears and too insolent grin.-*- After riding all day during a heatwave, Arthur and Merlin stop for a swim. 1. christopher pike

season 3 but with christopher pike pls. gimme all the threads.

is your muse a teenager/young adult who needs a mentor/dad?? look no further, because christopher pike is the dad (tm) and would like to adopt all of the children. please give me all of the plots where he nurture someone.

honestly, gimme some discovery muses and we can add a little plot in the middle of the season, let them discover planets and be a science vessel (for once!). pike does not understand everything that is going on (he is a humanities major surrounded by a bunch of stem majors) but he is excited and willing to learn

2. catherine morland.

OK BUT WHO IS FINALLY GOING TO LET ME WRITE AGAINST A VILLAIN THAT CATHERINE FALLS IN LOVE WITH??? BECAUSE YOU ALL KNOW THE WOULD. AND IT WOULD BE FUCKING HILARIOUS BECAUSE CATHERINE IS ALL DREAMER AND COMMON SENSE, SO SHE AT FIRST WOULD BE LIKE oh you are evil its sexy to then be like: but why, that’s such a bad idea. villain: that’s my masterplan! catherine: that’s stupid

people should 100% be friends with catherine because she is a sweetheart but also very stupid -- so, you know, she is fun.

3. flynn carsen.

i also need flynn to fall in love with a villain asap. thanks.

also gimme more heavily plotted threads of flynn saving the world, we can create a magical object, a villain (we can have npcs in the threads pls!!) and an objective. we can just... create our own tiny movie. please, give me a heavily plotted adventure with flynn!

flynn carsen is a genius. i need someone to kidnap him to use his brain to do some scary stuff. i just... he would be a mess in this situation and there is untapped chaos here.

anything set in season 7 because it’s my fav (it’s time travel, y’all know I’m weak for that) -- so yes, gimme historical figures daisy can meet, gimme historical plots, gimme daisy getting stuck in the past for two months and having to invent a life for herself (gimme do.usy)

6. clara stahlbaum.

the four realms are connected to the rest of the disney world. give me clara opening her borders again, her kingdom is a land of wonder and she can get to know the other royals!! i’d love if some of the princesses’s got close to her??? clara is always looking for positive female influence in her life!

someone from the real world who follows clara into the four realms? preferred family connections or close friends (would need to plot as clara is not very outgoing!).

descendants stuff for her! the four realms still exist with magic but its closed off from auradon. it was technically supposed to be permanently closed off and emptied, but that would not be possible and her mother refused to. on a show of good faith, she sent her children to auradon. gimme the friendships, the rivalries, the loves!

7. the prince (the beast from beauty and the beast)

platonic.

basically the same as the romantic plot 1 but instead of falling in love they become very good friends instead. and this other person can leave the castle so they bring the prince things from the real world -- news, letters from his mother, a shirt that smells like the sea!

gimme like an older sister relationship with him??? someone who constantly mocks him, who makes fun of him but would kill someone if they hurt him? someone the prince can lean on for comfort and love?

give me stuff set in an hp universe where the prince has a gang? not like a criminal gang more like a squad of other rich boys who are terrible but lovable??? also possible set in modern times... though a criminal gang... someone talk to me about it... oh wow...

a plot with a fellow royal where they are 100% platonic but pretend to not be so they can get their royal parent’s off their backs.

romantic.

when the castle is cursed, all humans who were staying there are frozen in place, unable to leave (basing this off the villenueve version). the prince is all alone, or so he thinks. for reasons (a magical pendant, fairy blood, magic) someone else is able to escape the curse. they are both very happy to have found each other, thinking they would be forced to live inside that castle all alone until the curse was broken. until they fall in love, but that’s not enough to break the curse, because their love doesn’t meet the requirements set forth by the curse (he could only be rude and slow, the woman had to come willingly to the castle thinking she would be devoured). so yeah, angst.

a prior engagement. the prince was engaged to a princess from another kingdom and they were very much in love (probably a secret engagement). when the curse is broken, the princess rushes to see the prince again and finds him engaged to belle (if she got married during this time???? more angst?). years have passed, their lives changed, but when they see each other, its like they are eighteen again and plotting a secret engagement.

when the curse is broken in the villenueve version, his mother at first complains that Belle is not of royal blood and therefore should not be allowed to marry him. the fairy then reveals that belle is the secret child of another kingdom. BUT WHAT IF SHE WASN’T??? this applies to belle and any other muse of no royal blood that could fit -- the prince is forced to marry a princess (after all, the kingdom’s heir disappeared for years, they need to show strength now), but he keeps his relationship with the woman who broke the curse???

1. When was the last time you realized something about yourself, your abilities, or your financial situation that left you feeling disappointed? Uh, seeing that I have so little money and it’s the holiday season. (This is of course my own doing- I decided I needed to impulsively adopt a kitten).

2. Generally, are you more likely to blame others or yourself for problems you experience? I’m a pretty logical thinker and I take responsibility for my shit.

3. What is one thing about your life that you don’t ever see changing, even if you might wish it would? I don’t see me ever having good, strong relationships with my family.

4. At what point in your life have you been the most social or had the most friendships? And at which point have you been the least social? I am at my most social right now, probably age 22-now. I would say my least social time was in high school. Depression will really hold ya back socially.

5. Do you prefer to have a few close friends or a bunch of random acquaintances? Which would describe what you have now? I think choosing between the two is silly and unnecessary. I have a few close friends and a bunch of acquaintances. I’ve got my core lifetime friends, my core work friends, and lots of acquaintances that I enjoy but I don’t love.

6. Do you journal? Generally, what do you write about? Do you find it helpful to get your thoughts out that way, or do you prefer another form of self-expression? I feel like tumblr is a form of journaling, but I do like to write down and keep record of my thoughts and feelings so that I can reflect of them later down the road. I like to be able to read my thoughts after that chapter of my life closes and I’m well into another. Comparing the differences in my outlook, my opinions, and my self-worth.

7. Do you like eating foods that other people have cooked for you, or do you prefer to have control over your meals? I don’t have a big preference. I am a bit of a control freak, admittedly, however I hate cooking so I withhold my nagging and the need to make sure that everything is done right because at the end of the day I just want the food.

8. Have you ever been somewhere and REALLY didnt like a food that you were expected to eat? How did you deal with this? Are you someone who is likely to suck it up and be polite or refuse and save your taste buds? I don’t think I have ever been in this position. I think that I would politely refuse the food rather than swallowing things that aren’t good.

9. What is one way in which you compare yourself to others? In this comparison, do you regard yourself as better or worse off than the people to whom you usually do the comparing? I, as many young women, am always comparing my physical appearance to literally every other woman I cross paths with because society has royally fucked women up. I typically regard myself as less than and I pick out all of the wonderful things about the women I’m comparing myself to.

10. What is something you’ve been particularly grateful for lately? I am incredibly grateful for Carter; he’s giving me a mutual respect and affection that has given me quite a bit of perspective and understanding of what I need and want. 11. What kind of change or opportunity would be the biggest help in your life right now? It would be great and amazing if my supervisory team would agree on a schedule that works and that makes everyone happy so that our work schedules can change asap.

12. Is there one emotion that you experience more often than any other? Is there an emotion you rarely ever experience? I am often feeling content and I rarely feel ashamed. 13. How mature would you say you are? What qualities do you think make a person mature? I would say I’m very mature. I have some faults but I recognize them. I recognize short comings and I recognize when I’m wrong. I step up and own my decisions and will apologize for messing up. I discuss how I’m feeling with people before it can fester. I’m confident in myself and my opinions but I’m also respectful of the opinions of others.

14. When was the last time you believed there might be something seriously medically wrong with you? What was the ultimate diagnosis? I think the last time I thought that was way back when I was little (I don’t even know exactly how old I was) I had a very swollen neck, but just on one side. It was hard to lift my head and I had a crazy fever. I vomited so often that the blood vessels in my eyes broke and the whites of my eyes were all red. The diagnosis remains a mystery.

15. What is one illness you are afraid of having? Do you know anyone who has faced this illness? I am terrified that I will get cancer. There have been 3 family members in the past 10 years that have had cancer diagnosis and many more friends have battled it or are currently battling it.

16. How do you tend to behave when you’re sick? What kinds of things do you like people to do for you, if anything, to help you feel better? I am a mess when I’m sick. I am a giant baby and I whine and mope and sleep. I live alone, so no one does anything I am on my own.

17. If you’re someone who rarely eats breakfast, is there a reason for this? If you do usually eat breakfast, are there any other meals you avoid or skip for any reason, and why so? I skip breakfast most days, I’m typically just not hungry between the time I wake up and when I get to work at noon.

18. When was the last time you did something you were proud of? Were other people proud of you as well? Does it matter to you whether or not other people care about your accomplishments, or is your own satisfaction enough? I was proud of myself for getting a promotion to supervisor at my place of employment. Other people were proud of me, I was given a lot of support. My accomplishments are for me and my own satisfaction, however, it’s nice to celebrate with others.

19. What is your least favorite thing about the season you’re currently experiencing? Are you okay with most types of weather, or are you only happy under certain conditions? It’s cold. I’m most happy in early Fall or late Spring, but I also like summer. I do not like to be cold.

20. Have you made any changes to your style or “look” lately? How often do you change your appearance, hairstyle, fashion, etc? Or is it a pretty constant thing? I dress nicer when I go to work, because I’m a supervisor.

21. What are some things you do to feel pampered? Mani/Pedi.

22. What was the last thing you felt hopeful about? Do you think there’s a good chance of whatever-it-is working out in your favor, or not so much? I’m pretty hopeful about the kitten I adopted- like I’m feeling good that she will be a fun cat and that she will get along with my dog.

23. In what ways are you prone to black and white thinking? In what ways do you see more in terms of color or gray? I see gray all over the place.

24. Are there types of people you will simply never understand (not necessarily ~empathize with) no matter how hard you might try? Are there people you seem to understand almost immediately? I understand most people immediately. I’m definitely a bit of an empath and I like to get to know everyone. I’ll probably never understand very narrow-minded people.

25. When was the last time you tried something you’ve never tried before? How likely are you to break from your routine and try new things? Well, I casually and spontaneously adopted a kitten. I’m not that likely to break out of my comfort zone.

26. Have you ever “recovered” from anything? What does “recovery” mean or look like to you? I recovered from codependency. It means that I took a maladaptive and life damaging behavior and stopped my way of thinking and behaving.

27. What are some ways your childhood differed from those of others around you? Do you think this difference was harmful or advantageous in the long run? I had a normal childhood.

28. What is one thing you are really good at compared to most people? What about one thing you are really bad at compared to others? I don’t feel like I have any spectacular talents. I’m not very good at dancing.

29. Do you think people are “all good” or “all bad”? What would make someone qualify as “bad” or “good” to you, or do you simply not think in those terms? This is a gray area. There is no such good as “all good” or “all bad.”

30. When was the last time you did something out in nature? Do you notice a dip in your mood when you don’t get enough of the Great Outdoors? I do things outside as often as I can, but it’s been a few weeks since my last nature trek. I do get a dip, but I get seasonal affective depression so being outside and cold is not really going to lift my spirits.

3 Strategic Reasons Major League Baseball's Attendance Is Free Falling...

Let’s get right to the point here:

No one outside of the teams themselves knows exactly how bad MLB’s attendance really is because the reported numbers are all built around tickets distributed and not tickets used.

Many of the examples that are thrown out in these lists of think pieces about what’s up with attendance are largely tactical and might act like a dose of sugar to an 8-year-old.

As someone that works with companies all over the globe, I look at Major League Baseball and I don’t see a tactical problem…I see a strategic problem and one that hasn’t been framed properly to this point.

In my view, the challenges that MLB is dealing with comes down to 3 things:

Value proposition:

Let me ask you a question: what is the value proposition of going to a Major League Baseball game at this point?

No one really knows.

Are you purist that is going for the love of the game?

Are you a family, enjoying a night at the ballpark?

Are you a business, entertaining clients?

All of these things might happen, but the reality of the situation is that no one really knows the point of view of Major League Baseball for why you should attend a game.

Looking at this challenge through the lens of the larger business community, we need to recognize that most teams and leagues don’t do a very good job of initiating a story about why someone should be a fan of the game or attend a game in person.

This is partly due to the fact that most of the teams have standardized their websites and content under the idea of making things uniform and simpler to create…with the unintended consequence being that, unfortunately, a lot of the brand personality has been squeezed out of the leagues and teams.

Outside of this reason though, the more important issue is that if the value proposition of what you are selling isn’t present from the first image on the landing page, you are likely costing yourself tons of money because as consumers shift more of their recreation dollars to experiences, you aren’t just competing against the in-home experience, you are also so competing against things like concerts, arts, festivals, road trips, and more.

Check out Disney World’s website:

Clean homepage with almost everything dedicated to highlighting the value of the Disney experience

Video

Strong language about the experience and limited time, to create urgency

Images of people having fun and some of the things you’ll see

I mean, I’m not going to Disney. But it looks fun!

Contrast that with the landing page of the Washington Nationals and what do you see:

Cluttered home page with nothing specific to draw your attention towards a game

Scrolling headlines that are likely interesting if you are a Nats’ fan, but if you aren’t…

A clear call-to-action about “Vote Daily! Vote Nats!” that would likely be better positioned to sell the in-stadium experience or tickets.

Best practices around the world of marketing and sales tell you three things:

Your message should be clear.

Your message should be compelling.

Your message should be consistent.

A critical eye on the website of most MLB teams would show that it varies whether or not teams are using a pop-up to alert visitors to a special game, series, or offer.

Within those that offer, there is also a wide variation of the pop-ups being good or bad.

This is hard to explain in a blog post, but if it is me…I’m starting out with 3 things to drive home the value of the in-game Major League Baseball experience:

1. Start by laying out a clear value proposition: The team side needs to be all about winning. To quote Al Davis: “Just win baby!” But on the business side and the fan experience side, my goal is to be to provide a world-class entertainment experience. Then I benchmark myself against what other experiential businesses are doing.

If I am selling premium seating and suites, I’m not looking at what other teams are doing in sports…I’m going beyond that to look at what the Four Seasons is doing.

When I’m looking at the presentation of my game, I’m looking at what Disney is doing, in their parks, on their cruises, and all the other places they entertain.

This goes on and on because every aspect of the experience matters and people’s expectations are growing as they are exposed to what experiences are like in other towns, countries, and areas.

2. Paint a compelling picture of why going to a game matters:

I did a keynote speech in the UK in 2017 that focused on the community and the connection of the live experience.

I didn’t do this for any other reason except for I’d seen a lot of reports and data that stated pretty emphatically that people want, yearn for a community and connection to the world around them.

Contrast that information with the way that is often presented when we are selling sports.

One isn’t reflected in the other.

If it is me, I’m beating people over the head with the excitement of the in-game experience:

I’m showing fans jumping up and down with joy at an exciting play.

I’m highlighting the goofy dancing and antics of fans during breaks.

I’m pointing people to see the ways our guests interact with each other in the concourses.

To put it another way, I’m putting everything out there like you have the chance to be at the best party in town 81 days a year.

To me the challenge looks like keeping demand up at a nightclub when you have 365 nights a year to get people to come to your party.

3. I’m going to deliver this message consistently:

While there may be some variation to the specific message, I’m going to be going crazy with the repetition that you need to come out and see the Orioles this weekend because the Royals are here for their only weekend series of the year and we are going to be throwing Baltimore’s best party all weekend long…and, best of all, it is family friendly.

Every message you get from me is going to be you are getting world-class entertainment that you can’t get anywhere else…best of all, bring the entire family.

…best of all, bring a client or prospect and share a one-of-its-kind experience.

On and on and on…

Customer Focus:

I’m pretty certain that if you just spent a little time going through the value proposition and really digging into how you could amp that thing up, you’d get a long way down to the point of solving many of the issues at the heart of baseball. Because out of understanding the value proposition you are likely to see that you aren’t really doing a good job delivering for your customers and you aren’t marketing very well.

Back to the customer.

There are 2 points here:

Who is MLB’s customer today?

What does their customer value?

First, does anyone really know who Major League Baseball is targeting as a customer today?

I certainly can’t tell.

Is your customer a high-end professional taking family or clients?

If so, you may be priced things the right way, but your stadium isn’t really built to encourage those fans to attend because if that was the case, you’d likely need to cut the size of your stadium from 40,000 to 4,000.

Is your customer the discount shopper?

Great!

You’ve now taught your market that if they stay away long enough, they’ll eventually get a better deal.

Is it someone else?

Who knows?!

The other point is that what do these customers value?

Without understanding your customer, you can have no idea what is valuable to your customer.

Worse even, how often are executives and marketers and sales folks just chatting with their customers, understanding what they like and don’t like, what they find valuable, etc.?

If I were to ask you the question in a workshop, I can guarantee everyone’s hand would go up.

I’m also betting that a lot of people are thinking that they do enough…and my challenge would be to do more.

Then there is the likely majority of people that aren’t really doing this at all and need to start ASAP.

The general idea being, MLB has a customer problem and it is that they don’t know who their customers are.

As far as I can tell the majority of their customers are TV partners, business sponsors, and brokers.

But if you want to get people back in the ballpark, start with your most valuable partners and ask these 2 questions:

What is the value that you receive from working with us?

What do you wish we could do better?

From there, let’s go to people you want to come to the ballpark:

Families

Young adults

Business folks

Other

Ask them what they are doing now. Why are they doing it? Why aren’t they going out to a game? What would they like to do more of?

And, on and on.

You want to understand what people find valuable.

What will cause them to come out to your venue?

What they are doing currently?

This isn’t rocket science though maybe it feels like it sometimes.

But the secret to generating demand is:

Understanding your market

Understanding their needs

Designing something that fills those needs based on your knowledge of your product and your customers.

Marketing!

Everyone knows how to market…I get it!

At least that is what most people think.

I’d argue most of you are wrong.

I go between two definitions of marketing:

Marketing is about selling shit! And, making boatloads of money! (Credit this one to Mark Ritson.)

Marketing is about creating discomfort. The discomfort of knowing that you could have something better if you’d only take action: buy it, vote for it, do it…you get the point.

I believe they are pretty similar, but too many people roll out the garbage about social purpose and brand identity and all these other things that really mean that people don’t know how to sell something or get someone to take action.

My perception of the situation is that there are 3 big marketing challenges facing MLB:

For a long time, MLB’s partners have done a great job of promoting the game, the players, and the story of baseball that the chops to market holistically just aren’t there. Look at the NHL’s decision to hire from a background outside of sports and how that has improved their marketing dramatically in a year or so.

Marketing and advertising are looked at as cost centers and boxes to check, not profit centers.

The art of storytelling has been lost.

How do you solve those 3 challenges?

First, you need to get some new life ideas into the marketing rotation.

Having the opportunity to do things across industries, I get to see the best and worst of marketing from all over the place.

Here are 3 ways to dramatically improve the marketing of baseball:

Expand the types of advertising and marketing that you are doing. I’ve used Alan Weiss’s concept of Marketing Gravity as a jumping off point of my own marketing and he lists 24-26 ways to promote yourself. I also keep a list in my folder with 125+ different ways to create content. So baseball needs to get out of the same old, same old emphasis and be creative in sharing its message.

Do better with your email marketing: email marketing for MLB is bad! Fix it. People buy from emails ask Kirk Bentley. He works with nonprofits, but I’m telling you his advice works…

Be consistent in telling the story of the game and link it to the emotional: nostalgia, experience, and community: emotions get people to act, period. Advertising and marketing is about striking an emotional chord with your target audience to get them to take action in a way that you need them to. It might be a decision ladder like I need you to go to the site, buy tickets, come to the game, repeat. Whatever it is, tell your story…over and over with an emphasis on what is going to create emotional reactions in people and get them to take action.

These things aren’t happening today. And, they are limiting the impact on what MLB is able to do from a marketing perspective.

I’ve done nothing here to cover other important parts of the issues confronting Major League Baseball like scheduling, pricing, and more.

In truth, if you knew your customers or were more in touch with the people that you need to come into the ballpark, some of these issues would be resolved during the designing an experience for your customer phase.

But this is my take on MLB’s attendance challenge from the POV of a strategist.

The time has come for my favorite most anticipated releases season of the year. I always find fall release season so exciting because my all-time favorite books of the year often come out in September, October & November. As always, I am still clinging on to these final weeks of summer. It’s interesting this year especially because normally this would be my first week back to school as an undergraduate, but this college graduate is now home and taking most of her graduate courses remotely while student teaching. But don’t worry, I’ll be breaking out the pumpkin spice coffee soon.

Today I’ll be sharing my most anticipated young adult releases of the fall, in order of their release date. Next week, I’ll be sharing my most anticipated adult releases for the fall. I decided to separate my YA anticipated releases from my new adult and adult ones just because there were so many exciting releases out in 2020.

Majesty (American Royals #2) by Katherine McGee | Release Date: September 1

I am so excited that my most anticipated YA release of the fall comes out on the first fall Tuesday! I’ve basically needed Majesty in my life since I first read its predecessor, American Royals, last summer. If you’re someone who loves contemporary royalty books, you need to read this YA series about the American monarch ASAP.

Recommended for You by Laura Silverman | RD: September 1

I’m sort’ve cheating with Recommended For You personally because I was very fortunate to have read an ARC earlier in August – my review is coming to the blog in 2 weeks! I recommend saving Recommended For You for the latter half of the fall as we get closer to the holiday season, as the book takes place at a bookstore during the holiday season as Shoshanna and Jake compete to sell the most amount of books.

Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi & Yusef Salaam | RD: September 1

I think Punching the Air is going to be such a big hit this fall – I was fortunate enough to receive a review copy and plan on diving into this novel told in verse following a teen who is incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit next week.

Grown is another of my most anticipated YA books of the fall that I was again lucky enough to receive an ARC of and I devoured this book in less than 24 hours. It has such an addicting, yet very difficult to read story for its content (warnings for sexual abuse and drug use), but I think Grown will ultimately be one of the biggest YA books of the year.

Shine has been pitched to me as a mix between Gossip Girl and Jenny Han with its own K-Pop inspired story of course.

A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow by Lauren Taylor Namey | RD: October 6

I absolutely adored Lauren Taylor Namey’s debut last fall, The Library of Lost Things, so I am very much looking forward to her sophomore novel, A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow. I am always up for any book following a character who loves baking, as Lila dreams of taking over her Cuban family’s Miami bakery. Her dreams are put on hold when after facing some hardship at home, Lila is sent to England for the summer to spend time with her family there and help out their inn kitchen.

Fangirl, Vol.1 The Manga by Rainbow Rowell & Sam Maggs and illustrated by Gabe Nam | RD: October 13

I’ve never read manga before, but you better believe I will read the manga version of my favorite YA contemporary novel! This Fangirl adaptation will be the first of four volumes. Rainbow Rowell has also worked with Sam Maggs on the script to include some new scenes, dialogue, and Simon Snow things!

Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennett | RD: November 10

I will forever spend my YA book blogging life trying to get everyone to read ALL of Jenn Bennett’s books including her upcoming release, Chasing Lucky. I read a review copy of Chasing Lucky back in February and this YA contemporary romance is hands-down a 2020 favorite of mine.

Love & Gelato is one of my all-time favorite YA companion series, and I can’t help but fall in love with Love & Olives’ Mamma Mia-inspired synopsis. The book follows Liv’s trip to Greece to help her estranged father with a documentary project and gets to explore Santorini along with her family’s past.

‘Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game — it is her life and his,’ the statement said in part.

Week in Review

In the midst of the White Sox actually scoring runs, I figured I'd give another summary of the past week in Sox baseball. They opened the week in New York's very own wiffleball stadium, and lost 2 of 3 there. Aaron Judge also hit a ball to the moon off of Dylan Covey.

Cleveland then came to town. The Sox went scoreless through the first two games, and turned it on yesterday to not get swept. It looks as if that offense is carrying over to today against the Royals at Sox Park. It's currently 12-1 as I write this. Let's get down to it.

MVP of the week: Matt Davidson

Every time this dude plays, he has struck out about twice per game but displayed some good pop in other ABs. He's 3/4 tonight, a triple away from the cycle with 4 RBIs. Hell, he's better than Cody Asche, who's slashing .057/.132/.057 with -0.7 WAR on this young season. Meanwhile, Davidson has 4 homers, 14 hits, 1 BB, on 40 PAs. Yes, he has 17 K's, but this production is incredible.

Most improved: James Shields

I'd give it to Shields, even though he got hurt. He's pitched extremely well this season. Let's hope he returns ASAP.

Needs to figure it out: Todd Frazier

Frazier was down batting under .100. He's not an average hitter, but that's just not him. Let's hope he's back to hitting dingers again soon.

The Sox have Kansas City in Chicago now, as stated before. Then they head to Detroit. Let's win or lose. Whatever's cool when you're rebuilding.

Summer is one of my favorite times of the year to dive into a new pile of books because it’s beach and poolside reading season! My anticipated summer 2020 releases list is definitely different than what I had imagined it would be at the start of 2020. Many spring books got pushed back to summer, so you might see a few repeats from my Spring 2020 anticipated releases post. Some new books that were originally scheduled to release this summer also were moved to the fall- get ready an extra long fall releases post then! The following books are scheduled to release from June through August 2020.

The Dare (Briar U #4) by Elle Kennedy | Release Date: June 16

Elle Kennedy made my April when she announced that there would be a fourth book in the Briar U series, The Dare! I cannot recommend the Off-Campus and spin-off series, Briar U, enough! This hockey romance follows crowd-favorite hockey player, Conor. I have all of the Briar U books in paperback, so I hope The Dare becomes available in that format too.

The Marriage Game by Sara Desai | RD: June 9

The enemies-to-lovers storyline is one of my favorites in rom-coms, which makes me even more excited for Sara Desai’s The Marriage Game. Working above her father’s resutrauant, Layla is getting her new business up and running while also deciding to join the world of online dating (even though her father decides to set her up on a bunch of blind dates). CEO Sam unexpecedtly ends up sharing the office space with Layla, and the two spar off over their shared space and Layla’s blind date suitors.

The Sullivan Sisters by Kathryn Ormsbee |RD: June 23

After really enjoying Kathryn Ormsbee’s Tash Hearts Tolstoy back in 2017, I was instantly intrigued by her upcoming release, The Sullivan Sisters. Painful events have kept the Sullivan sisters from confiding in each other like they used to, but a letter about their dead uncle and an inheritance they knew nothing causes them to work together to solve a family mystery. I’m also up for a mystery or thriller to break up my contemporary reading game!

Head Over Heels by Hannah Orenstein | RD: June 23

I feel like we’re starting to see gymnastics more and more acorss genres. The one I’m most excited for? Hannah Orenstein’s Head Over Heels! After a disastrous performance that ended her hope to get into the Olympics and career, Avery is asked to help coach a young gymnast with Olympic aspirations. While sparks fly with her fellow coach, Ryan, Avery’s world is turned upside down yet again when a scandal breaks out in the sport.

Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan | RD: June 30

Having loved Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asian series, I’ve been wanting another book of his. That being said, I was scrolling through Goodreads to see if I had missed any books for this post and I can’t belive I didn’t know his upcoming book, Sex and Vanity, is coming out this summer! I added it to my Goodreads TBR before even reading the synopsis.

The Heir Affair (The Royal We #2) by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan| RD: July 7

The sequel to The Royal We, The Heir Affair might just be the most popular anticipated release on this list. I originally read The Royal We back in 2015 and really want to reread it before picking up the sequel. I need to get on the library holds list ASAP or just give in and buy my own copies because I know everyone is going to be reading and rightfully talking about The Heir Affair for the rest of 2020.

I fortunately also have an ARC of Today Tonight Tomorrow and I just need to dive into already! I’ve seen so much love and hype for this one by so many of my blogging friends. Today Tonight Tomorrow follows graduating high school seniors and enemies, Rowan and Neil, who are forced to team up for their senior class game taking them all over Seattle.

10 Things I Hate About Pinky by Sandhya Menon |RD: July 30

I feel like I’ve talked about 10 Things I Hate about Pinky in at least ten other blog posts (deservedly because Sandhya Menon is such a YA staple), so I won’t get into too many details here. If you haven’t yet put it on hold at the library or pre-ordered, the book is going to also be available in a Dimpleverse bookset also including When Dimple Met Rishi and There’s Something About Sweetie in August!

Bookish and the Beast (Once Upon a Con #3) by Ashley Poston | RD: August 4

A Beauty and the Beast retelling, Bookish and the Beast is the third book in Ashley Poston’s Once Upon a Con series. This series is the perfect read for any one with a love for books and fandom- and coventions! Each book is set at a convention dedicated to the fictional series, Starfield. Bookish and the Beast is a hate-to-love romance following two teens working for a library after a rare book is destroyed. How much more bookish can you get than that??

Seasonal anticipated book releases posts are among my favorite blog posts to read and write. I’m especially excited about all the amazing books coming out this March through May 2019. While I have some historical fiction and fantasy mixed among my anticipated reads, there are seriously some MANY contemporary releases I cannot wait to get my hands on.

Since I’ve covered most of the books below in my most anticipated 2019 releases posts (ALL THE BOOKS PLEASE: Most Anticipated 2019 Non-Contemporary Releases & CONTEMPORARY ME: 19 Most Anticipated 2019 Contemporary Releases), I’ll be shortly covering why I’m excited for said book. I’ve also dedicated a section to spring releases I will be reviewing here soon.

Anticipated Spring Releases

Field Notes on Love by Jennifer E. Smith (March 5) – I am more than ready to have a new Jennifer E. Smith book in my life.

Cold Day in the Sun by Sara Biren (March 12) – I haven’t read a YA book featuring hockey since Sarah Ockler’s Bittersweet. I’m looking forward to reading this book featuring a hockey-playing female protagonist.

Night Music by Jenn Marie Thorne (March 19)– I’ve seen much love for Jenn Marie Thorne’s The Wrong Side of Right (it’s on my TBR), so I’m also excited to check out her new book.

Girls With Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young (March 19)– Another book that I’ve seen amazing early reviews for, another book cover I need in my life ASAP.

Dig by A.S. King (March 26)- I haven’t read an A.S. King book yet, but Dig sounds right up my alley.

You’d Be Mine by Erin Hanh (April 2)– Like everyone, I’ve been in a huge A Star is Born mood since October, and I’ve read so many great early reviews for You’d Be Mine.

In the Neighborhood of True by Susan Kaplan Carlton (April 9)– In the Neighborhood of True has received much early praise, especially for having a Jewish protagonist and story that doesn’t revolve around World War II.

All for One (Alex and Eliza #3) by Melissa de la Cruz (April 16) – I am absolute trash for this Hamilton-inspired series.

If I’m Being Honest by Emily Wibberly & Austin Siegemund-Broka (April 23)– Always Never Yours stole my and the YA community’s heart last year, so I cannot wait for a new book from this adorable writing duo.

Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo (May 7)– Maurene Goo’s The Way You Make Me Feel was hands-down one of my favorite 2018 reads. This is my most anticipated May release!

Her Royal Highness (Royals #2) by Rachel Hawkins (May 7)– Royals/Prince Charming is still on my TBR, but I see myself binge-reading it and Her Royal Highness.

Again, but Better by Christine Riccio (May 7)– A college YA written by one of my favorite Booktubers? Yes please!

There’s Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon (May 14)– Sandhya Menon’s book are just so much fun that I am more than ready to meet Sweetie and reunite with Ashish from When Dimple Met Rishi.

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (May 14)– This political (and royal!) rom com sounds so freaking good!

Testimony from Your Perfect Girl by Kaui Hart Hemmins (May 14)– This reader loves family dramas.

I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn (May 28)– Fashion is one of my favorite things to read about in YA, let alone a book about a fashion-loving protagonist in Japan.

Who won big at the Fashion Awards 2017?

Which of his ‘babies’ does double winner JWA love more? Where does Virgil Abloh go to party? and why couldn’t Adwaoh Aboah speak? Find out all this and more in our insiders’ report on fashion’s biggest night of the year…

Last night’s annual Fashion Awards, housed in the iconic Royal Albert Hall, honoured the glitterati of the fashion industry in an emotionally charged ceremony that combined major international glamour with poignancy – and unusual star turns galore. During the Fashion Awards 2017, there was a tribute to the late, great Azzedine Alaia (who died recently) from his tearful protegee Naomi Campbell, and a rendition of George Michael’s Freedom by Rita Ora, backed by a gay mens’ chorus – of course. There were major A-listers in attendance, from red carpet attendees like Selena Gomez to industry heavyweights including Anna Wintour.

What used to be a mainly Brit-focused affair is fast turning into a global event to rival the Met Ball for international clout – last night’s ceremony saw Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri make the trip over from Paris HQ to receive the first ever award for Positive Change, in recognition of her feminist-focused designs. Her predecessor at Dior, Raf Simons – now making headlines over at Calvin Klein – was also at the Albert Hall to receive the night’s biggest nod, Designer of the Year.

Marie Claire’s Jess Wood was backstage to chat to some of the winners – and to see major moments like John Galliano dancing down a corridor hand in hand with Donatella Versace (honoured with a special Fashion Icon award), while make-up queen Pat McGrath giggled from the sidelines.

Here’s what some of our favourites had to say…

Adwoah Aboah

Winner – Model of the Year

Shimmying backstage in her turban, Christian Louboutin plaforms and head-to-toe sequins by hot young London designer Michael Halpern (another of the night’s winners), girls’ mental health advocate and Gurls Talk founder Adwoah was speechless for a full minute when asked what winning meant to her.

‘It means so so much. London is home and I’ve watched a lot of my close friends pick up this award – I’ve also really looked up to their careers so to be following after them means a lot. To be sitting next to my mum and dad, and next to everyone from Professor Green to Stormzy to Maria Grazia, who have all been massive supports to me…I’m really really grateful.’ She’s got more than the award to be excited about, too – she’s just been announced as a newly-minted BFC (British Fashion Council) ambassador. She’ll no doubt be rolling up her sleeves and tackling taboo issues like models’ rights with typical guts.

Michael Halpern

Winner, British Emerging Talent – Womenswear (for Halpern)

You might not be that familiar with his name – yet – but that’s about to change, big time. Young London-based designer Halpern is fast becoming known as the new ‘king of cool glamour’ with his Studio 54-inspired sequins and glitz. But as he told us, sequins need to be taken seriously…

‘I’m a magpie in every regard. But what’s important is not just to focus on the disco era but the attitude that those people had – it was rebellion and trying to stand up for something. Using this idea of glitter and sequins as rebellion, that’s where I’m coming from.’ he told us with one arm round Pamela Anderson, his idol (and everyone else’s, as it turns out – who knew?), who was dressed in black floor-length Halpern sequins to present him with his award. So, um, what is it about Pammie, Michael?

‘Pamela was my OMG moment this evening! When I heard she was presenting the category tonight, I just wanted to meet her, I didn’t care if I won or not. She’s super authentic, she’s not trying to be anyone else. Nowadays, so many people are involved with their personas on Instagram and how they present themselves, and she’s just very honest in that way.’ Fashion fans, now you know…

Virgil Abloh

Winner, Urban Luxe award for Off/White

The coolest – and nicest – man in fashion, wearing trainers with his tux (obvs), stopped for a good old chinwag about his many talents and plans. He’s an architect by training, a longtime collaborator of Kanye West’s, and has pretty much been responsible for turning streetwear into a luxury fashion category with his label Off/White. But did you know he likes to spin a tune too? Read on…

‘With me, youthfulness is at the heart of it all – whenever I’m putting together my own look, it’s about ‘what’s red carpet for a 17 year old kid?’ and I guarantee he’s more comfortable in Nikes than dress shoes,’ Abloh told us about his Fashion Awards look. As for his award?

‘I love winning awards but I can’t place too much value on it. It’s super cool that they’re acknowledging this category now. British fashion has been integral to my career – Kim Jones has been my mentor for over 10 years. Louise Wilson [late legendary St Martin’s tutor] was my supporter and advisor, without going to St Martin’s – but she was someone who believed in today. Half my family is in London, and I’ve always felt an affinity for it as a melting pot. From Carnival, to grime, to skateboarding, club music…Music and streetwear has been here forever – music, rhyme, club dance have all influenced why sneakers are in trend. I come from that kind of back door of culture – I just gave myself the task of making it ‘high fashion”.

So, Virgil, what will you be doing to celebrate?

‘I’m going to celebrate by DJing at my own Off/White nightclub at Somerset House – at 180 Strand. I’m an architect by training. I’ve built this as a one off, one-night-only project. I’m playing at midnight – it goes on till 3am, playing house and techno. This is fun, but my whole sphere is like 4am on the dancefloor, DJing…’ Our names are on the door, yeah, Virgil?

JW Anderson

Winner, Accessories Designer of the Year (for Loewe) AND Womenswear Designer of the Year (for JW Anderson)

Yikes, the JDubz has done a double! Fashion’s most talented young whippersnapper scooped a major prize for each of his labels, a rarity in fashion awards history. So, which is he most excited about?

‘I can’t pick sides – it’s like having two babies. I love both brands!’ He confessed to us. ‘Actually, it’s kind of difficult to accept this – I feel like we’re in a very challenging moment in general and it’s difficult to feel you can accept something like this when things are very complicated. But I love my work. Sometimes I feel guilty and a bit like ‘am I going to be hated (or double hated) for my success? But who cares?’ Did he have a sneaking suspicion he might win? ‘Last year I came and I lost 4 awards! So I come with no expectations! As long as I’m drinking and having a good time then I’m fine.’ Cheers, JWA…
