─Happy birthday to the 2d soulmate and my irl soulmate’s twin ♡
Looking down his nose, his eye's narrowed in their average serpentine manner like they always did.
"And it's paid for?"
Though you sighed it didn’t stop you from smiling even if his first response was to be difficult as always. So with robust gusto you puffed your chest out with triumph because this plan was air tight even by his standards, "Yep, courtesy of my paid sick time even. You get paid today and I have it all planned."
Kurono didn’t let up on his judgmental squint. After all he had just literally opened his bedroom door to see you standing outside it ready to burst for lord knew what exact reason. And he hadn’t even made it over the threshold of his own room before you sprung this on him, “....so, why, exactly?”
“Because it’s your birthday!” You explained far too chipper for this early in the morning.
He leaned to the side to look past you into the empty apartment. Causing you to frown a little and Kurono noticed you dip in morale at his odder than normal stare, “It is, yes. But again, why?”
Glancing over your shoulder towards the apartment’s empty kitchen you then looked back at him with a returning confused scowl, “Because it’s your birthday and I want it to be special. Have you literally ever done anything for your birthday?”
His mostly hair covered brows knitted together in what was only a brief dive in his memories just for Kurono to turn up with another complacent shrug, “No. I work.”
“Ok but-” You were grabbing at anything to get him riled up like you were, “How about before Haijima. It’s not like you hatched from an egg in the middle of the street or something.”
Kurono’s face remained unmoving without an ounce of denying or affirming your statement.
“Never mind never mind-” You waved your hands briskly in front of you to discontinue that thought entirely. Once more proudly puffing out your chest and clearing your throat, “Yuichiro Kurono, I have prepared a packed day to celebrate your birthday.” Extending your hand out you offered it to him with a smile, “Will you allow me to celebrate your birthday with you?”
Warmth of his yellow and orange irises turning into tiny little slits once more as he squinted at you. Kurono was unbudging even after you offered your hand, “...is it expensive?”
Quickly you shook your head and jutted your open palm up towards him again with insistence and excitement, “I paid for it all.”
“But...why exactly?”
“I swear to god Yuichiro-” You grabbed his hand and yanked the suited man towards you, “It’s your birthday, let me make it special for you since we live together.”
He looked down at your hand grasping his. He wouldn’t have to make breakfast this morning. Wouldn’t need to pack his lunch for his too short of a lunchbreak. No need to stand on public transport to and from Haijima. Wouldn’t need to clock in for an entire day but he’d get a paycheck for it? While not having to spend a cent all day long? All while getting drug around the unknown by you? Kurono couldn’t fathom a better way to spend his birthday. And certainly never found the words all day either to tell you how this might be his best birthday yet.
Every detail of every second of the day was filled. While also being explained as you went. Ok well more like you explained it all to him in gibberish over breakfast at one of his favorite restaurant. One you both frequented together on the weekends so when you sprung that as the first stop on the birthday tour, he couldn’t help but be a little tickled with it. Even if he sipped his coffee as deadpan as any other day.
Over his favorite meal of overly saturated pancakes with three pads of butter and the addition of his favorite omurice he said he couldn’t finish but used his pancake to wipe up the last bit of ketchup. Kurono listened intently as you told him about the bookstore trip that was a subway ride away that had an extensive kids book collection, followed up the lunch spot you’d both eaten at before and had some of his favorite curry that they always cooked way past squishy every time, to then go to a movie he was surprised you recalled him wanting to see and a stop by the store he always wanted to get his button down shirts from but never did. All to be finished off with a dinner reservation that a bunch of people had talked about in the breakroom but Kurono never thought about actually eating at.
And like you had promised he didn’t have to think, pay or plan for anything.
At the bookstore he found an enormous encyclopedia of nursery rhythms that you snatched up to buy after watching him sit for almost an hour scouring through it. Even insisting the cashier gift wrap it when they asked if it was a present. Kurono was about to deny a birthday to save the cringe of being told happy birthday as an adult but you covered him and said it was for someone special. To which the cashier dropped it and Kurono let out a little held in breath. Only looking over at you to see you wink at him and thank the cashier when you both left.
Lunch was just as good there as he remembered when you went a few months ago. In fact he asked if you’d asked them to cook the curry longer than normal because it was perfect. Still you shrugged nonchalantly and insisted maybe they just knew it was his birthday. Never giving him a straight answer. But also not sure where he was putting it all after the breakfast you’d both had. Didn’t matter though because once again Kurono was content and full without realizing the day wasn’t even over yet.
The clothing store, that you once again bought the thing’s he was looking at. Even paying for them beforehand so he could wear the nicely pressed button down to the movies. Perfection even following to the theater when you got a seat exactly where he liked. No one around you both. Kurono finding himself stealing glances at you every so often throughout the movie. He didn’t know why. But as dinner came onto the agenda he just couldn’t stop looking at you.
Thankfully you never noticed.
Dinner at a place you needed a reservation at felt as fancy as it was. Kurono indulged his palette once more with an amazing meal. In a shirt he didn’t buy but looked unreasonably good on him when it wasn’t wrinkled. And as he sat quietly eating his dinner like he’d mostly been silent throughout the day. He noticed upon the dozen or so glances your way that something seemed off.
It wasn’t until the two of you returned to the apartment did something feel off. Kurono off load his clothing as well as the still neatly wrapped book. Looking back to see you’d gone to the kitchen without a word. After he’d set his things down the man followed you to see you frowning. All he could do was return you look with a somewhat slight frown of his own.
“...did you have fun today?” You asked almost tentatively.
“What?” Kurono scowled over at you, “What kind of question is that?”
“You just-” It was difficult to word and it showed on your face until the words made their way forward, “You were quiet. More than normal. I just- I wanted to make your birthday special.” You broke a little bit of a self deprecating smile and looked over at him, “I realize now you probably didn’t want a day where I drug you around the Tokyo Empire and just asked what you wanted to do.”
Kurono took a step forward. Closing the little bit of a gap there was between the two of you. He did look so good in his new shirt. That you were thankful he got at least.
“You didn’t ask me what I wanted to do for my birthday.” Kurono bluntly said.
Groaning you drug your palms down your face shaking your head with your stupid move of todays plan, “God damn it, it was too much, wasn’t it? I’m so sorry Yuichiro I just- I wanted to make up for something I guess and-”
“And all I wanted to do for my birthday,” Kurono rudely interrupted you. Forcing you to shut up and look over at him surprised, “All I wanted, was to spend it with you.” He shifted a little on his feet looking down at them without much of a trace of emotion on his face or in his words, “We could have done that at work or out like we did or...even just here at home.” Kurono finally looked up at you with the most relaxed you’d seen his face all day as he took a moment to stare at you longer than he had all day long, “...With you is all I really cared about.”
Fighting the twitch of a smile on your lips you did so by offering your hand out to him like you had early this morning before everything happened. And like before Kurono scrutinized your gesture with a glare. But this time he laid his pale hand in your palm and watched as you spread your fingers between his and laced them all together.
Stepping to him you lightly slung your arm around his shoulders. Kurono taking the very brash hint to put his other arm around your waist. The two of you looking at one another as you smiled enough for the both of you.
“There’s no music.” Kurono parted the obvious fact onto you.
“I could sing you happy birthday?” You offered with a shit eating grin plastered on your face paired with a cocked eyebrow.
“Please don’t.”
Leaning into him to rest your cheek against his shoulder the two of you began slow dancing in the middle of the kitchen. The click of his work shoes in the small apartment. Your bare feet keeping out from under his steps as you lead. Both of you lazily following the ingrained steps of a mock waltzs as Kurono rested his cheek against the top of your head. Lost for a moment as the quiet alone time presented itself as the best gift you could have given him.
“Yuichiro-” You mumbled against his shirt as you squeezed his arm and stepped forward with the rotation of the dance.
“Yeah?” Kurono said softly above you.
“Happy birthday.”
He realized for the first time today he couldn’t see you. Kurono looking out at the rest of the kitchen where you both spent so much time together. And after an entire day together he still couldn’t have felt more content to be anywhere else. Unable to see you he let the faintest smile curl at the corner of his cheek. Kurono squeezed your hand and tightened his arm around your waist ever so slightly to hold you that much closer to him.
“Thank you...for my new favorite birthday.”

we hate the doppleganger in this house 😊 // chapters 275-277 based with yuichee in mind
One black soulless pupil staring down at them as they stared up at the monstrosity. Lost in the glassed over orb seeing all of the Tokyo Empire nearly meant she lost herself in the otherworldly gaze had the tiny squeeze to her hand not jolted her senses back to earth.
“That means....we’re linked with Adolla...” Nataku murmured next to her as his grip tightened.
Looking down at him there was no way the woman couldn’t squeeze his hand back in some effort to comfort him, “It’s alright. Everything is alright- We-” Frantically she looked around trying to figure something out. While everything stirred in chaos there seemed no way out of this with such a looming gaze over everything, “We just need to find someone.” She squeezed his hand and led Nataku down an alley away away from the harshest screams that were emanating from the main throughway. Everyway she looked there wasn’t a safe place to go. Only struck with one thought as their shoes thudded against the ground as they ran in any direction that seemed safer, “We need to find Kurono.”
“Kurono! He’ll keep us safe!” Nataku echoed the sentiment.
She had no idea if he could. But staying where she was with Nataku. As an unpowered at that and the world spinning in unimaginable chaos each passing second. They both were sitting ducks at best if you couldn’t find the reaper in question.
One stroke of good luck in the moment of insanity. They rounded the nearest brick building in the hopes to slip behind undetected by neighboring infernals but instead it was something entirely different. Nataku sounded off before anything else when he saw the familiar shoulders facing away from where they both were coming up.
“Mr. Kurono!” Releasing the grip on her hand Nataku bolted from beside her when a deep sinking feeling struck the woman all at once. She couldn’t get a hold of him fast enough as Nataku ran towards the figure, “This is so good! We were looking for you too!”
“No wait-” She tried with haste to snag his sleeve before he got too far only to fail and a scream rip from her throat, “Nataku that isn’t-!”
Thus the strike came down. Overly heavy handed the second his knuckles made contact with the side of Nataku’s head. The boy knocked to the ground with every ounce of wind knocked out of him in one strike. He hit the ground with a thud before she could make it in time to grab him away from the imposter's feet. One split second to glance up and the face she saw above them was not Kurono in the slightest. It was only a glimpse though as the same hand came crashing down with visceral power against her temple. Hard enough to cause a streak of blinding lights to pulsate and blur her vision. Still she grabbed Nataku to her chest and curled into the boy to keep him and as much of herself safe from the cruel grin looming above them.
“Of course I was looking for you two,” The face of the man you knew so well was there. But who stood before you wore it so incorrectly that it made her stomach turn inside out. Those same black dress shoes clicked against the concrete ground as he stepped closer and that up turned sneer never faded even as he spoke, “The sixth pillar and the useless unpowered woman....just who I was looking for.”
“You’re not Kurono-” Nataku curled more into her chest as his head was cradled closer for safety.
“What have you done with the real Kurono?!” She pushed Nataku behind her as the man stepped closer and showed no means of stopping. Splotches of light still decorated her vision after such an unannounced strike. Enough to knock a pillar down at that. It was certainly enough to rattle every fiber of an unpowered human such as herself.
“Don’t you recognize me?” His sneer turned upwards in disgusting amusement as he put his arms out like he was expecting a hug from either of them, “Your Uncle Reaper of all people?”
“No.” Nataku gripped her arm with his brows furrowed at the man above them, “Kurono would never look down at us smiling like that.”
“Nataku hush,” The woman pushed him behind herself more and put her body between the imposter and the sixth pillar as best she could. Most of her senses steady it didn’t stop her from swallowing the lump in her throat when she stood her ground in front of this monster, “Stay away. I don’t know what you did but-”
“You talk as much as I expected,” The man wearing Kurono’s face laughed and shook his head with another step closer to them both, “It’s a shame you’re doppleganger was just as annoying. So I did the one thing your Kurono just can’t seem to do-” His words causing her blood ran cold with the one thing he alluded to so carelessly. Just one half a step to bring him toe to toe with the two of them and the imposter couldn’t stop smiling like his heart was full of glee, “Do you know what I did to her?”
“No-” She shook her head not wanting him to finish that thought.
He cackled with Kurono’s voice. But it wasn’t him. None of this was the man she knew. Even so the way his words settled heavy on her shoulders made her heart beat even faster as he spoke with nothing short of flippant amusement, “I killed her. Just. Like. That.”
“Enough!” Nataku pushed himself away from his guardian. Enraged by the literal shit flowing from this idiot's mouth. The sixth pillar, though trembling as he shouted, clenched his fist in anger and let it out, “There’s no way the real Kurono would sneer like that! Not when bullying anyone! To him bullying the weak is completely natural. And there’s nothing funny about it! Smiling like that while you say such untrue words-” Nataku’s sleeves clenched in his fists as he couldn’t be quieted by the woman who’d hushed him in the first place for his own safety, “You’re just a lame fake copycat trying to be Mr. Kurono!”
Nataku’s pyrokentic abilities flared up. Making it unable for her to safely touch him without fear of getting burned. She didn’t need to intervene though the copycat he was yelling at began cackling before either of them after Nataku’s little speech.
“Very perceptive. You’re such a clever boy Nataku. But it’s too bad you don’t understand that the world doesn’t care if you’re fake or not.” His sneer only worsened as those eyes looked nothing like Kurono’s staring down at the both of them, “Nothing matters. So replacing the real one with an imitation won’t matter to anyone will it?”
There was no way anymore of this monster's dribble could be heard. And Nataku putting himself in danger like this. Standing up suddenly she pulled Nataku back by his collar and didn’t hesitate to put her body between the two of them regardless of burns, “You shut up!”
“Oh?” The imposter cocked a grin to the side.
“Everything you say is shit.” She could feel her heartbeat threatening the very ribs that kept it in. Still it wouldn’t stop her, “You know nothing about the real Kurono and there are people who will care if you replace him so you’re not going anywhere!”
“Ah but am I really not that real?” His voice, his lips moved like Kurono’s might but nothing he said was of the same soul, “I just happen to be the people’s perception of him. I’m just the Kurono everyone else knows.” He didn’t let her speak up, “No one will care if I replace him. No one will notice. All I have to do is beat the original. And in this world, victory forgives all.”
Reining in the trembling muscles to hold her stance firm. There was little an average person could do against a third generation. Even less since she knew exactly how strong Kurono was to start with and there wasn’t anything she could do besides stall. Still though the words spewed from his mouth were nothing but vulgar and she held nothing but absolute refusal of them as they dribbled out of his mouth, “There are people in this world that will know- People who will notice. You can’t replace the original just because you think you’re the people’s perception, you-”
“Think?!” His mouth unhinged in the loudest laugh yet, “I am the perception of your precious reaper! I am what this world thinks of the monster that you call Kurono! What you two think is but a spec of the entire world.” Dropping his hands to his side the Kurono look alike let his fingers twitch before a familiar smoke began solidifying in his grasp. Yellow eyes set forward and sneer beaming his look couldn’t be happier, “I’ll kill the original and then, I’ll kill you.”
Every animal instinct that led up to human survival now was screaming at her to run. To leave. That danger was standing right in front of her and this imposter was not lying with his words. He had blood ready on his hands before even coming here. And in a split second more he raised his ashen weapon ready to strike the foolish unpowered down before starting on the boy.
Suddenly yanked back onto her butt. With no time to think as Nataku was thrusted into her lap as well. Both sets of eyes fluttered open to look up at the very familiar back of said reaper standing before them.
And in unison neither of them could keep his name out of their mouths, “Kurono!”
“Don’t tell me,” Kurono's tiny grimace was the only slight alteration to his deadpan expression, “This is my doppleganger.”
The imposter before him seemed to come alive with a giddy frenzy. His daggers disappeared in favor of solidifying a scythe and raising it up high for all to see, “There you are! I’ll destroy you and that weak little human you let weigh you down. Then I’ll plunge the sixth pillar into utter despair!”
“Alright you two,” A familiar voice sounded off behind the woman and child just for them to see Oguru standing back against the building, “Stand back here. Pretty sure he can handle it.” Nataku was pushed between the two adults. Oguru with his hands slipped casually in his pockets looked over to the woman, gave a wink then a leisurely jut of his chin out towards the imminent battle, “You worried?”
Though half moon shapes were being indented into her palm from clenched fist. For everyone’s sake she took a deep breath and felt a twinge of calmness crawl its way into her mind seeing Kurono stand there with his back to the three of them, “No...I know the original is stronger.”
That face was certainly his. But Kurono got a weird dislike for the sneer plastered all over his imposter's face.
“I’ll kill you! Let me see, let me see! All I want is to torture you to death!”
Lunged first the doppleganger wasted no time. Matched with soot daggers of his own Kurono didn’t break much of a sweat blocking the onslaught of attacks from the maniac refusing to shut his mouth as he fought. A bit too much Kurono forced a plume of smoke with intent of backing out and taking the onlookers elsewhere to avoid it all.
“Your smoke is my smoke too!” His copycat cackled at the meaningless attempt to run away.
All that black smoke came crashing across Kurono’s chest every which way. Hiding the attacks that slashed him across the chest as well as forming new ones as the imposter ransacked his ability and made it his own in a split second.
“More!” He threw his head back laughing in ecstasy, “I want more! Show me more blood!” Even going as far as to dip his head down and drag his tongue along the edge of his blade soaked in Kurono’s dripping blood.
Just a minor flinch from the way the man drug his tongue along the blade in such a disgusting manner. There were so many thoughts going through his head at that moment. More than he was paid on average to have. And as the doppleganger licked his lips clean of blood Kurono couldn’t help the sour twist of a frown settling on his lips at the sight before him.
“What’s the matter Kuronooooo~ So ready to be replaced? Careful~” He sang so chipperly while smiling like a mad man, “Or else the fake will replace you.”
Kurono briefly averted his gaze from the sham of a copycat to the trio behind. Nataku tucked under the woman’s arm as they both stood next to Director Oguru. All three of them were unmoving even as the fighting had gotten a little loud. Kurono sighed and straightened up his stance, “This? Is this really the impression I give?”
“Huh?”
One big sigh and Kurono stood up, relaxing his shoulders and loosening his grip on his soot weapons, “It’s like a bad B rated psycho movie.”
That incited a snicker from the imposter who raised his weapon up, “This is just how people see us- Think of me as a surface recreation of one Yuichiro Kurono.” He charged Kurono in a grand plume of smoke following the swing of the soot scythe, “Even if I replace you, no one will give a damn.”
“Not true!” A shout from the sidelines. With her arms around Nataku, Kurono’s fellow Haijima employee spoke above the clash of weapons to everyone’s surprise, “People will care! There are people who care about the original! No matter what- You’ll never be the real Kurono.”
“We only want the real one!” Nataku echoed her sentiment.
Snickering as he lashed out at the original. Kurono’s doppleganger would not be swayed by words. Just an onslaught of attacks that Kurono was forced to dodge or block with little room to go on the offensive. Only making the matters worse as this disgusting monster had enough moxie in him to cackle the entire time he attacked the reaper, “Humanity is full of rotten thieves concerned only about themselves! No one would care if I replaced you!” A sharp edge of soot jutted out of one of his attacks. Kurono narrowly missed it as the scrape on his cheek seeped with the thinnest line of blood. No time to think of that though when the dopplegangers attacks brought him closer to the foolish onlookers and the garbage spewing from his mouth only got worse, “History is written by the victors! It doesn’t matter what you do or say because that’s how it will always be!”
“Kurono!” She felt the flutter in her chest when one of the monster's attacks landed across his shoulder.
“Die die die!” Shrouding the giant eye staring down at all of the world, the imposter seized the moment to direct all their power down on the original Kurono but also fueled with cruel intent as some of that brash attack was racing right towards the three onlookers witnessing it all.
Putting Kurono in the worst position possible but not making him think twice as the reaper put himself between the innocent and the monster. Taking the brute of the attack. Only thankful that this monster’s smoke was in fact his as well. Dampening the majority of its force as he skidded back a few feet but successfully kept everyone behind him safe.
“You and I differ in three very different ways.” Kurono, with no time to wipe the dripping blood from his cheek, regained his footing and saw the immediate attack coming his way, “Firstly, no matter how much power I have, I never meant to be inhumane.” A second more and he wouldn’t have caught the edge of his dopplegangers blade as the scythe was brought down on his like a gavil, “Second, I’m an outstanding office worker and not a psycho-”
“You bully little kids, what are you evening talking about!” The copycat sneered with a swipe of his weapon along Kurono’s ankles.
Stepping away from the real Kurono still hadn’t made much of an effort to counter with an attack, “At the end of the day, that is part of my job only. I have permission to bully children. In other words-” Gripping his soot daggers firmly Kurono lashed out with his first attack towards the monster, “I’m permitted to bully the weak.”
Ringing crashes when one blade edge struck the other. The doppleganger was just as good at blocking as the original. Only a twisted smile came onto his face as the original Kurono was face to face with the monster's sneer now, “Well, I’m permitted to replace you!”
“Well that’s never going to happen.” Kurono reformed his soot weapons into something better suited, “And you didn’t even let me finish my three reasons we’re not the same.”
“I don’t care!” His imposter swung his scythe wide once more.
The blade of the imposter’s scythe was stopped dead in its tracks when met with the same edge of Kurono’s scythe. His sneer bearing down on him as Kurono held firm staring back at him, “We’re not the same because I never fight alone.” Ear piercing clatter of their stalemate being broken by Kurono. The original reaper readied his scythe with sturdy footing as his attack patterns suddenly changed from the defensive they’d been since entering the scene. His yellow eyes set forward with that unenthused dip to his lips Kurono stared across at the utterly ugly fool in front of him with a matching weapon, “And for that reason alone, you’re never going to replace me. It just wasn’t meant to be. And I’m gonna need you to leave this world because of that.”
With his answer to the doppleganger’s desire to take him over. Kurono watched with a twinge of disgust as the monster in front of him through his head back cackling. Utter disgusting vulgar noises coming from its lips as it cursed and laughed and spat nothing but utter violent nonsense. It was beginning to leave a sour taste in Kurono’s mouth.
“Insane laughter to extreme language, you sound like the captain of the fourth for a second. Is this really how people see me?” Kurono looked down his nose at his doppleganger.
“No.” The woman behind him made Kurono look back at those waiting for him, “This isn’t what everyone thinks of you Kurono.”
“That’s how it goes.” Oguru gave a casual smile as he took his hands out of his pockets and crossed his arms, “When someone doesn’t know a person very well. You tend to turn them into abstract thoughts in the hopes of understanding them.”
“Those of us who know better.” She squeezed the hand that was laid on Nataku’s shoulder as the both of them looked on at Kurono with worry, “See nothing but a lie in that imposter.”
“End him Mr. Kurono.” Nataku’s lips quivered in an attempt to keep calm, “He’s not the real you.”
Sighing, Kurono looked on at the maniac in front of him that certainly did look like him but that was a stretch if you ask the reaper, “So most people see me as some cardboard cut out slasher? I’m starting to worry how that might affect my job...” The thing across from him licked the edge of their blade again and Kurono grimaced in disgust, “You don’t have to lick your blade every single time.”
Surging with an attack the doppleganger dropped his weapon and charaged Kurono, “We are the same! All you’re changing is your damn viewpoint!”
Then came the clatter of blade on blade as Kurono stopped the attack to scowl at his imposter, “Oh yeah?”
“You’re scum that bullies the weak! You could say I’m the real true version of you!”
The blade that came down on him was only a minute part of the dopplegangers attack. With gusto a plume of smoke exploded and sent the real Kurono reeling to get back on his feet as the imposter continued his assault with deadly accuracy made worse by the tiny tendrils of smoke cutting up each and every part of Kurono they could touch.
“That smoke is what will tear you limb from limb!”
Wrongly second guessing his position Kurono dodged but not before suffering a gnash somewhere on his body. Unable to figure out where it was. But when the plops of blood hit the ground at his feet with a wet thud made two of the onlookers scream out for his safety in the wake of such an attack.
“I don’t care about my position in some stupid company! I don’t care what others think of me!” the doppleganger brought on a mass of smoke that surrounded Kurono on both sides. Nowhere to go as the reaper was clasped between two mighty jaws of inky black smoke that launched him off the ground and took away any advantage he might have had with two feet on the ground. All while the imposter sneered and snickered, “I’m stronger because I killed the things that held me back!”
With the drone of what came from his mouth. Still that wasn’t what perked up his ears. Kurono’s eyes slid to the side not to look for a way out. But to see the worry etched on the woman’s face below him. And beside her, a smaller, weaker look of version on Nataku’s face. Still his glance to the side still came to rest on the familiar face of the woman he’d known the longest.
“Is that right?” Kurono finally looked back down at his doppleganger who held him in the mighty jaws of smoke, “If you were really that strong, you’d think about throwing it all away. Running away, no paycheck will ever be worth losing my life over. But- you don’t really seem that strong.”
“Stop acting tough ‘real’ me.” His doppleganger sneered, “Once I’m done you don’t have to act anything and you can rot in the ground with the weaklings you love so much.”
“I’m not acting tough,” Kurono said so calmly and so matter of fact, “We do have one thing in common, that we tend to think of ourselves first above all else. But fundamentally we couldn’t be more different.”
Releasing himself from the jaws of smoke just as the scythe in the doppleganger’s hand transformed into a massive clawed cudgel he swung above his head with all the force possible to rip the original reaper to pieces. The copycat couldn’t stop cackling as he readied to end the reaper’s life, “Oh then tell me o’ great reaper! How are we so different!?”
Just a split second to react the smoke that encased him fused into the same clawed cudgel being brought down on him. Kurono was able to lock attacks with his imposter self. Blood dripped in sopping globs at the duo’s feet as he bled from the previous attack. Kurono heard the voice behind him above all else even if it was hardly more than a whisper.
“Please....please don’t die Yuichiro-” Tears filled the woman’s eyes behind him. With the tremble to her lips only one tear made its way dripping down her cheek as the two seemed locked in a loosing stalemate, “Please- Please don’t die-”
That second he glanced back at her was when Kurono was seized once again in the jaws of smoke. His weapon being broken from his grasp as the doppleganger cackled at his momentary mistake to look away.
“What makes you strong?! Huh?!” The blood curdling laughter echoed between the buildings.
Kurono, remaining utterly calm, looked down with a deathly eerie stare. His doppleganger not stopping his laughter before Kurono felt a twinge in his limbs and the woman’s voice echoed in his head, “My strength isn’t because I’m an unhinged psycho. I told you reason number three...”
“Huh?” His words stalled his imposter’s laughter.
“I never fight alone.” Kurono looked back at his fellow Haijma coworkers. Once at the woman who’s voice filled his head. Then to his boss standing smug and relaxed, “Director Oguru, give me the order.”
Musing with a small smile Oguru looked over at Nataku and the woman next to him. Once more giving her a playful wink before turning to Kurono in the literal jaws of death above them all, “Go for it.”
A massive eruption of smoke. Every speck of soot that was used to hold him back was suddenly under his control. Kurono stole what control the doppleganger had. Charging him with an attack similar to the one he’d been struck with. But this one three times the size as the other. Leaving the copycat nowhere to go as Kurono closed every gap the sneering beast tried to put between them. Not letting up an ounce with his chained attacks. The onslaught of violence turned on the maniac who spoke so loudly to start. Now being forced to shut up as he couldn’t keep up with the speed the reaper was attacking him with. An utter different approach than how he entered the fight. It was like a different person entirely that the doppleganger couldn’t hope to outstep.
Thrashed against the side of a building. Bricks giving way where Kurono threw him. The doppleganger had blood seeping down his temple unable to move a muscle as the real reaper stood above him with rising tendrils of smoke forming all around him. Cutting out the vision of the weaklings in the back. That same smoke solidified as dragons around him as the whites of Kurono’s eyes were slowly swallowed up with blackness as deep and dark as his soot swirling around him and only him. Now as he looked down at his imposter all but wearing the weakest sneer on his face for the first time since they came face to face.
“One of the reasons I’m able to fight, is because I can still push all this blame onto my boss.” Kurono spoke so calmly as the soot surrounding everything dampened out the noise of the world’s chaos around them, “If I was alone, I couldn’t do that.”
At the other end of the blade now, the copycat reaper still couldn’t keep his sadistic mouth shut, “You can’t do anything without the say of your boss! How about I free you from that shackled way of living!”
Kurono stopped in his steps and looked down at the tattered version of himself at his feet with something close to contempt for the monster, “You’re trying so hard to replace me but....Do you even like being me?”
A pause. But what came next was no surprise.
“As if!” He cackled without remorse, “I just want the perks of being you!”
Crashing down the bodies of the smoke dragons formed unhinged jaws. Each part of the imposter reaper being torn into hundreds of pieces. Even the blood that was spilled from his body didn’t match what stained Kurono’s shirt. Black sticky inky blood splattered on the walls as the dragons made short work of the doppleganger. Leaving nothing but a stain of blood where all the dragons converged on the greedy fool with a big mouth.
Stepping to the drying pool of blood, Kurono looked down, seeing nothing left but the stain of black blood on the ground, “I could never let someone replace me just for what I’ve worked for. You just wanted something out of it...” He remained looking down as the smoke cleared completely and the crashing sound of adolla came roaring back to life around them all, “Maybe if there was some love behind it, it would have been different...”
“Kurono!” Just like before when they echoed his name. Both Nataku and the woman didn’t wait an extra second to cross the area between them. Nataku beat only by an extra step when she was able to throw her arms around him in a hurry.
Embracing the man as tight as she could regardless of wounds or the blood she stepped in. The fight might have only lasted a few minutes but it felt like a lifetime since seeing him. Squeezing him tight until the weight of Kurono’s arms could be felt coiling around her shoulders as well, “Yuichiro-”
“Mr. Kurono!” Nataku latched onto the other side of the man, “I’m so glad it’s the real you-”
Kurono let one of his arms drop from embracing the woman. Only to ruffle the hair on the boy's head and an almost unheard of smile curl up slightly on the man’s lips. But it was as genuine as his words, “The only person who’s going to be bullying you from now on will be me.”
Static crossed Nataku’s face as he hardly had time to process Kurono actually smiling. A long enough pause that she loosened up on the hug just to laugh a little at Nataku as well before taking him into the middle of the hug. Squeezing them both as tight as possible even in the middle of the world ending.
“I think I’ll be switching careers,” Kurono spoke solemnly as they all let go and turned their gaze up onto the eye widening above them all as Adolla encased their world with no end in sight, “After this whole end of the world thing.”
With eyes turned up she reached out and took Kurono’s bandaged hand. Safety in the way he squeezed it and she returned the smallest gesture. No one could look away from the eye of Adolla and yet it didn’t matter as they stood under it holding hands, “I think I might just quit too.”
