Splatband Analysis: Ink Theory

(Disclaimer: This analysis in based on what I get out of looking into the character descriptions we have of the splatband characters. If you disagree with what I say, that is fine, we are all beheld to our opinions. Just don’t be a jerk about it.)

Edit: Put a Read More on this cuz now I realize this is long.

I’m gonna start this series with Ink Theory. You might have expected this to go in chronological order and have started with Squid Squad, but I have a good explanation for that. None of the other bands are Ink Theory. Plus this band has at least three pieces of artwork to them (and Yoko has an additional one thanks to Yoko and the Gold Bazookas, that’s how you know she’s special. Kitamura as well, but we’ll get into that later), so I feel there’s more to work with.

So, let’s start off with a band wide reading, since I feel they warrant it.

To start with, here’s the main thing we know about the girls, their knowledge of academic music theory and classical training. They’ve all been practicing since youth, making music a big part of their life, and studied music theory. However, of the six, Mayaya, Bibi and Karen are the ones noted to have graduated from music academies, while Yoko, Kitamura and Oonie are left unmentioned of their education. While it could be the writers simply didn’t want to repeat themselves too much, it’s just as likely that Yoko, Kitamura and Oonie went to less notable institutions like regular colleges that didn’t warrant mentioning. Just a thought.

The second thing to note is their rivalry with Bottom Feeders. While most of what we know comes from the Bottom Feeders side of the rivalry, which is appropriate considering their more volatile, chaotic personalities, the Haikara Walker magazine does mention the two bands got into a music battle during a concert in ZAPP square, fueled by their rivalry into an epic performance. So while it is clear Bottom Feeders started it, it’s also clear that Ink Theory reciprocates the rivalry, or at the very least indulge it for their own reasons.

With that out of the way, let’s focus on our ladies, starting with best girl:

Yoko

The first and foremost thing we know of her is her mutation and her unknown illness. Her hair is multicolored due to a mutation that is only aesthetically pleasing and not useful otherwise. Considering that her hair turns gray as it reaches the top of her head, and even her eyebrows appear to be gray, it’s safe to say it involves her ink color not being able to properly change. As well, she has a weakness to atmospheric pressure that essentially makes her always miserable. Despite that, her determination and hard work is highlighted as a strong suit of hers, being the frontwoman of the band and absolutely slaying on the trumpet. She’s someone who works through everything, regardless of her obstacles.

On the other hand, she’s described as being insecure about being overshadowed by her own bandmantes’ personalities (you should read how they describe her on Inkipedia, it’s just rude). It’s safe to say that at least three of her bandmates being well regarded academy graduates might have something to do with it. It’s probably why she gets nervous before large performances too. She feels she needs to work hard to keep up with the others and gets nervous because of it. It makes sense why she went off to “reinvent” herself in Splatsville according to Splatoon Base. Speaking of Splatoon Base, it mentions she comes from a conservatory background. Looking it up, the meaning I get out of it is that she studied at a smaller university where the focus was on the practical basics of performing, with less focus on the academic side (If I’m wrong, please tell.)

On the more minor stuff, she clearly likes the design of her hat. Like, it sounds like a stretch, but when you own three hats that share the same design element (the horns), then there’s probably something going on. Three makes a pattern after all, or however it goes. Also, in the Valentine’s day artwork, while everyone except Oonie and Mayaya has ice cream, she has fries and a drink. She’s probably not a fan of sweets.

Karen

The only based Karen in existence. She’s one of Ink Theory’s big name graduates, having been top of her class in her university, and even having gone on several competitions overseas. She went around the same time as Taka, who was her senior and is the main inspiration for the formation of Ink Theory. She’s clearly the main Eralien of the band, though the rest of the band doesn’t seem to mind having to wear uniforms inspired by Hightide Era.

She’s mentioned to be nervous about her popularity in Ink Theory, despite looking self-assured otherwise. Considering she’s been in several competitions and has won a ton of awards, it’s a safe bet to say she’s not used to the lack of attention she’s getting as part of the band. Not that she seems to want to bother the others with it. She provides emotional support to the team (Yoko lucked out on that), so she doesn’t really intend to feel that way. Trying to be humble but failing internally or something along those lines.

Bibi

Bibi’s another academy graduate in the band, and plays the kazoo because apparently she’s so good she can just do that (and it works). Much attention is put on the fact she’s essentially “The Face” of the band. She’s closer to the public, the fans adore her enough to pull her in front of the camera, and they even call her Queen Bibi. Clearly someone who’s aware of her popularity and relishes in it (Yoko and Karen are in the corner right now, just pointing that out). She’s also implied to be from a wealthy background, as she’s a large spender who’s never much struggled financially.

It’s never actually explained why she chose the kazoo over any other instrument for the band. Maybe she wants to show off a goofier side? Or maybe just regular show off? Food for thought.

Oonie

Now we return to one of the none-famous academy graduates. Oonie is stated to have parents who are famous musicians, possibly the classical kind, and who were strict with her upbringing. As a result she favored music genres of a different style before she eventually started appreciating classical again. Classic rebellious teenager case here, observing other genres as a form of rebellion and who only started appreciating classical music under her own terms. Her new outfit in Splatoon 3 outright supports it. Someone managed to find a pinterest picture a while back of someone in the exact same fit as her, it’s called Harajuku. Look up the word to learn more.

She’s also described as romantically inexperienced, and with a habit of falling for self-degrading people. She must be hunting for a relationship but keeps ending up with the self-deprecating type. I kinda have a theory on that, but I’ll save it for a headcanon post. And the final thing is the observation in the valentine’s day image that she’s ridiculously indecisive. She’s still staring at the menu after everyone else already has their orders. Also, she’s a Squid Squad fan, she’s got a charm of them on her bass case. Cute.

Kitamura

Kitamura has the shortest description, but I feel it tells plenty. Another not famous academy graduate, instead she’s highlighted as the mascot of the band. Everyone seems to know she’s cute and she’s fine taking advantage of that it seems. She’s mentioned to have a high singing voice, so she must sing, either casually or as part of the band and we just got unlucky in not getting any vocal music. Bummer.

She’s stated to live on her own, but following a curfew. Outside of implying she’s independent and diligent, adulting on her own and following her own strict rules, it also implies that the rest of the band lives with other people. Possibly with families or other friends they have. She’s also a trend chaser, following whatever new fads she hears about. She does seem to have some set in stone tastes though. If we can believe the urchin in that one Octo Expansion chat image is her (the one about Pearl’s early metal days, there’s an urchin wearing bows on their hair. If so, that gives her artwork number 5), then she’s got a taste for punk/metal stuff. Her new outfit in Splatoon 3 supports that, being a flowery white shawl worn over a dress studded with spikes around the base. I love that fit so much.

And for her place in the Valentine’s day image, she’s about to eat an ice cream sundae the size of her own head. And Yoko’s looking at her with what I assume is concern. Small people eating big food is a trope you never get tired of.

Mayaya

The final big name graduate of the band. Well, just graduate, as unlike Karen and Bibi, they just say “musical academy” without the famous adjective. Maybe they left it out? Anyway, she at least impressed her professor enough that they recommended she start teaching music immediately after graduating. She likely showcased that potential in a way, maybe as a tutor for other students, and she also had a close enough relationship with said professor to willingly listen to that recommendation. As is clear with Ink Theory, she chose instead to go out and make her own music first, to develop her skills before she decides when she wants to become an instructor.

She’s a freelance percussionist. Ink Theory seems to be her main band, but she also performs with other ones. Like she said, she’s focusing on creating her own music first, so freelancing is a nice avenue in getting tons of experience in other genres.

fuuuuck man, i can't stop thinking about amy's character development.

like amy's always been smart, albeit ditzy, but she operates largely on rebelling against what her parents want from her. she does not want to be a living uterus to make heirs and money for her shitty folks. she parties and sleeps around and generally still acts like a sorority girl because she values freedom.

and it's funny bc her parents introduce her to kif, but kif is a new way to keep amy grounded. kif isn't a one night stand, he tries to call her back and wants to get to know her. he wants to impress her family, and neither of them care that it doesn't work because he was brave enough to try. in fact, they can probably both bond over feeling like they're unfairly tethered to people who don't see them as individuals. he loves her and wants to commit to her, and she's flattered and realizes she loves him right back beyond just dating.

and amy is... not good with emotional literacy. she says things to insult people on accident a lot, and she doesn't usually seem willing to get very personal with the crew. and when kif dies in BWABB, her mom literally tells her to get over it mere days later, and then she copes by sleeping with zapp seemingly just to bring kif back in some way. so i think this is something else she internalized from her upbringing.

so i think when kif gets pregnant, obviously she's not ready to adjust to a life of responsibility, especially given how being a mother has been held over her head as basically a command for most of her life. but she wants to be with kif, and she's willing to adapt for him. and then she gets 20 years to prepare, and given this episode, i believe she spent those 20 years talking this over with kif, working out their relationship, learning to get her mind in order and eventually be a responsible parent. they had some real hurdles (and bad writing) but i think eventually, she felt ready to commit, especially after she earned her phd. she's financially secure enough to do pretty much whatever she wants after all, and having a family with kif is what she wants next in life.

i think this all made the "biological mother" thing so much harder for her. because leela has her own traumas, but it seems like she's naturally maternal, whereas i feel like amy had to really work for it. and she's worried that simply being exhausted is enough to make her a bad mom, and takes that out on leela, even though leela is also exhausted and far from perfect. i feel like in amy's eyes, leela has always been very capable and mature, even if they don't always get along, and i can see her worrying that the kids would innately bond with leela and amy wouldn't be enough. and given she outright acknowledges how terrible her parents are in this episode, and they reject the babies for being visibly mutant-alien, i can see her worrying she's repeating the cycle, and even though she's loving them as much as she can, she's only ever known parents who were harsh and critical, and being so openly loving is something she had to learn. (leela had to learn this too, but amy is too self-critical to realize that.)

so when amy says she loves those kids "more than [she] realized [she] could ever love anything"... i really believe that. i don't think amy knew how capable she was of expressing true love. i don't think she realized that she could commit to someone and not just fulfill her parents' degrading wishes for her. this isn't about her parents, this is about her and kif and the future they made with their love.

and by god, she's gonna be a good mother, and it'll be hard, but in the end, she's doing it because it feels good.

Top 5 Freela moments?

this is truly like choosing a favorite child

i HAVE to go with the ending of TWOF, but rly did you expect anything less? just the most satisfying moment i have ever experienced in my tv viewing experience. the set up, the execution - fry literally walking into the frame and leela's face when he hands her the flower. aside from it being their first legit kiss (that i count anyway), it's SO important to their development. leela realizing that success/status/someone looking great on paper does not make someone the ideal partner, but what does is the feeling of relief you get when you see them and the way they make you feel special. i love how fry doesn't even remember nibbler saying he'll help him out w leela, so this was truly just a genuine moment of him being thoughtful. also fry's "yes!" when they fade to black is so sweet

okay i thought for a while about the number two slot and i think i have to pick "no matter what happens, you'll always be leela, the woman i love." fry was so frickin immature and lowkey sexist at the start of the series, which we see a ton of in i was a crustacean in love specifically or even in amazon women in the mood ("is she hot?" "she is all knowing" "in other words, no") and we've gradually seen him mature (my fav "zapp's not the only one becoming marriage material" "you're getting there" <3). leela's biggest fear w fry has always been his commitment issues and him getting bored of her. we've also seen her insecurities ab the way she looks throughout the show, so for him to confirm to her (when she's like entirely squid, mind you) that no matter how she looks, he will always love her is so special. it was the culmination of 7 seasons of development for both fry and their relationship, and i love leela's reaction (and her tentacles doing the princess diaries foot pop when they kiss lol).

i could just put moments from s4 on here and this entire list would be complete tbh....the best season, nothing is ever topping it. the sting is just a special moment and i can't even imagine watching it when it first aired. while we'd gotten little hints here and there that leela had feelings for fry, this episode just confirms the extent of those feelings. we know fry would rather die than be without leela, but this ep confirms that leela would rather die than be without fry. the whole ending segment is great, w leela trying to unalive herself so that she can "feel alright with him" and fry talking her out of it (first real "i love you" :') ) but GOD the feeling when they show the hospital room. the details that we see from all the things fry said to leela in her dream. amy's "they said you'd never wake up, fry never left your side for a second." leela holding her heart when she realizes that him talking to her is what inspired her to wake up!! the hug <3 it's so crazy to me that an animated show can show the intimacy and physicality between them so perfectly.

"dear fry, our time together was short but it was the best time of my life. - leela." for similar reasons to the one above, i love an ep that does a deep dive into leela's love for fry. this one, man. this one. leela marrying CUBERT just bc he resembles fry says it all. "i used to think there was someone for me." just her rage at fry and heartbreak that she will never see him again, while managing to create the successful future she had always wanted but ultimately realizing it's pointless without someone to share it with. that video card hits me so deeply when he says i love you the look on her face actually destroys me.....but what gets me most out of everything is the cavern on the green. leela has no idea where fry is. he could be in the past for all that she knows. but leela knows in her heart that if she leaves a message, somehow, somewhere, fry will see it and he will know how she feels. and he does. that to me is so beautiful, their love is fated no matter what universe or timeline that they're in.

this is a relatively new fav scene for me but "you're lonely and i'm lonely, but together, we're lonely together." freela had kind of just been bickering besties up until this episode, but this was the first time we'd really seen them connect on an intimate level since 102. fry is upset ab spending xmas alone for the first time, leela is upset ab spending her life alone. he's alone in the year 3000 and leela has spent a lifetime alone. we see fry so upset that he hurt leela, that he goes out of his way to buy her a gift and apologize (massive development in fry's emotional intelligence, esp if you compare this to 103 w bender) but leela ends up being okay. she holds his hand and tells him that they can be lonely together and it's such a gamechanging moment, you can just see the chemistry and the connection between the two of them.

Spoken Magic [Head Canon]

Speakers were once nomadic, it was very recently that they collectively settled within Hellsalem's Lot for the purpose of aiding the Caster who had called them from the corners of the globe. Every known Speaker family remains separate from the rest, save for times of crisis when they band together, offering their strongest magic wielders to the fight. Their stories, their mythos, even their magic is centuries old and only recently brought to a more public eye.

No form of "physical" Arcana can compare to a Speaker's magical abilities and everyone who needs to know does. Due to Caster relations with Libra, Speakers were quickly introduced to form a secretive trinity meant to keep Hellsalem's Lot safe. With the Casters acting as a public face for all three groups.

You were still in training when your family traveled to the first permanent home you or anyone in your family had ever known. Being among the strongest of your clan it was inevitable for you to work alongside Libra. Which is how you met your current boyfriend...

Klaus

He is enraptured with the centuries of history you can recite from memory, more so with any folk tales and their modernizations/alterations through retelling

If there's something you can't (or won't) reveal about your family or culture as a whole, Klaus understands completely

He might still be curious, but you said no and that's the end of the conversation

Whatever kind of magic you perform, Klaus can get distracted because of how different it looks from a blood blade attack (though only for a second because middle of the battle)

He has offered to get things to write down, or at least record an audio log of your stories (something the elder Speakers are hesitant to do...)

At first thought you had to be much older than a human life span considering the way you spoke of events from years before you were born as if you were there (but that's just how Speakers recite history)

Steven

He is fascinated by the old stories and depths of history you know, but the two of you have argued about specifics of dates and times

He won't try to pry too hard when you mention being unable to let a non Speaker know certain things, but sometimes he pushes a little too hard (mostly because its work related)

If you ever just start telling a story (and Steven isn't busy) then he'll be laying across your lap listening intently (and not about to sleep he promises... just resting his eyes... your voice is very soothing)

He is very taken back by how powerful even your supposed low tier spells are and forgets how much space to give you at all times (he can be very protective)

No, he doesn't like how often you use fire on his ice... no he won't admit that refreezing the ice makes it stronger or less resistant to cracking... he is a stubborn man

Leo

Poor boy can see the runes floating out of your mouth when you cast spells and it freaks him out sometimes

"You... you look so normal that it's just weird to see that."

Will not admit that he forgets what you really are, but jumps whenever you start arguing with Zed or Steven for a historical inaccuracy

He falls asleep easily around you because history was never his strong suit, and he finds your voice soothing... but mostly the bad at history thing sadly, he can't deny it

Gets very concerned when you start arguing with anyone who wants to jot down a thing you say for records as it is not just rude, but also a taboo among your people (meaning you need to get permission from the elders, or at least the elder of your clan)

Though with the All Seeing Eyes, Leo does try to actually see what it is you're talking about given he should be able to

Sonic no like the magic person... froze his banana then roasted it too much. But sometimes is okay with magic person... until he slip on ice

Zapp

Does way too much to avoid when you're about to go into "lecture mode", he doesn't want to sit around listening to a history lesson

Nor does he want to listen to your stories, he tunes out everything because it all sounds the same

Though he will stay right there if you start talking, just expect him to fall asleep to the sound of your voice

Also expect him to fight others on your behalf. Whether its someone trying to write down something against your will or someone trying to argue historical accuracy with you

The only real problem Zapp has with you is the fact that you're so powerful... he gets jealous easily and thinks he should be the powerhouse between you two

He is the fighter dang it! You're supposed to be the brains of the operation!

Zed

He could sit for hours as long as you tell stories and recite history

There might be a few points he'll want to discuss or debate, but he won't stop you before you've finished saying anything (in case there's some context he's missing that you... or rather your ancestors knew about and passed to you)

As much as he wants to write down what you're saying, the fact that you can recite it verbatim repeatedly keeps him from pushing the issue too far

Though the things he is allowed to write down (or if you write something down for him) he cherishes it forever

Whenever you are using your magic, Zed is very careful to stay a good distance away... though he still gets distracted from time to time

Zed tries to learn magic from you, but that doesn't go over very well since he sometimes trills mid spell and everything goes colossally wrong (meaning you wind up cleaning the whole thing, though you keep trying to teach him since he's willing)

After recovering from a traffic accident in 2019, I've started rebuilding the company, taking advantage of the opportunity of a few years off to study:

What worked well (and why)

What failed (and why)

How to apply all of this going forward with the printing production technology advancements of the last few years (in a very short period of time, things have changed a lot)

Looking at those items and saying "Now that we own our office space outright, what can we do that we couldn't do before?" (The short answer is "a lot" but that answer is mixed with the above)

Call me atty. I am a writer, cartoonist, graphic designer, rambler-of-things.

My producer is called Fang. She was around in the Evil Supply Co. days (see above) but largely keeps a very low profile.

We are not quite Zapp Brannigan (me) and Kif (her) from Futurama... but... not terribly dissimilar. I make things, she helps keep things on track.

FRONT OFFICE: A SHOP

Evil Supply Co. was an independent Halloween-focused greeting card, notebook, stories company. Always spooky, never scary -- no horror, Looney Tunes-level violence only. We remain and always will be independent.

The tone is light hearted, sweet, joyous. Every day is Halloween and tonight is an opportunity to either celebrate with an existing tradition or create a new one.

Slice-of-life monster stories -- you are a mermaid, you go to an underwater grocery store, this is what you see.

After recovering from above traffic accident + figuring out what I want to do with my life, I'm bringing it back.

The new shop is called "Netherworld Post Office" and the overlap of old and new themes is about 98%.

One of the biggest reasons for the rebrand came out of the above ramble -- when we were "Evil Supply Co." a lot of people would expect true crime, horror, gore, etc. -- topics we do not ever explore. This isn't a judgement, it is a simple misalignment in potential audience + our focus.

To help end confusion, I'm renaming the company. I'm retooling everything else, so now is the best time to address this issue.

An AU where Nightmare Moon happens before Discords imprisonment, forcing Celestia to face him alone. She is no longer able to wield the elements of harmony, and no pony has proven to be able to wield them like she and Luna had. She is forced to use the strongest parts of her powers over the sun, powers she promised herself never to use. The fight was terrifying, a being of pure chaos fighting the Sun. The Everfree forest was practically destroyed and a burning landscape was carved in its place. What should have been a lifeless zone of fire was filled with new forms of plantlife and animal life, chaotic creatures created by Discord's chaos and Celestia's solar powers. The two eventually came to a draw, forming a peace treaty. Even Discord was growing weary of the destruction that they were causing. Both of them making sure that the burning ecosystem they created stays in place and doesn't expand. The two inadvertently become co-rulers.

Optional additions: Discord rules from within the Everfree fire. His castle the ancient rebuilt castle of the two sisters. Although he did add on to it. Like tons of fire proofing. Some Ponies that refused to leave their homes at the very edges of the Everfree fire have more chaotic magic than others, and are considered part of Discords court. Although they are also affected by the large amounts of solar magic, so they are equally in Celestia's court. Discord likes the many strange creatures and plants in the Everfree fire. Sun flowers made of condensed sunlight, grass made of solid fire, rivers of smoke, Phoenixes are a common sight, and dragons have felt right at home in the blazing temperatures. Ponies have adapted to withstand the high heat because they wanted to stay within their homes. The apple family farms apples from the Everfree fire, golden apples, fire apples, zapp apples are one of the few remaining plants from the original forest. Discords favorite apple is probably the zapp apple and the golden apple.

The final kinda fuck with my theory so this is now an alt universe thing. But i had an idead that angel took an angel blade for alastor durring extermination and he held him as he died. Angel whispered to him not to let anyone eat his corpse unless its him ( because its messed up and angel is in love with al)

Alastor loses his mind and goes full demon, shocking everyone when he bites into an angel and tears her apart. In the mix of the whole city fighting he hides in the hotel with angels body. When everyone regroups they argue with the horror that angel had died. Then his soul beams and with divine power his torn putfit is changed to a flowong crop top and skirt that is longer in the back. With little pink shoes. He gaspes to life. His whole body glowing. But before he can get a true breath vals chain apears on his neck and hes dragged on the ground. Till al grabs his collar and breaks it with his rage. When angel starts breathing properly everyone decends on him. Shocked by the fluttering of wings on his back. Slight pink with darker pink hearts on the top.

The moment of realif is ripped away when angel, charlie, vaggie are zappes into heaven suddenly. Set in front of the gates. Saint peter is alarmed when he sees the book change to make room for angels real name. In a moment Sarah and emily are at the gates. Sarah denying him entry so that evil doesnt corupt her souls while emily argues hes redeemed. Its a lot of chaos woth adam also giving his two cents. Sarah decides to take the conversation to theor meeting room. Along the way angel sees molly and they ruinite. Saint peter offers to stay woth the spider twins while the meeting goes on.

They are put in a room beside the meeting and spend the time catching up. Until angel is abrouptly taken into the meeting room with molly in toe. A lot of arguing is going on with the main theme being 'they dont want angel in heaven' hes pissed with his abandomint issues.

Adam gets so in charlies face vaggie pushes him back and a fight breaks out. With Angel not letting any of the angels take advantage and kill him a third time. He shoots warning shots and protects molly whos caught up in it all. Adam comes at her in the mess and angel throws her at charlie for safety. Angels now trying to hurt her in the comotion but vaggie and charlie do their best to protect her.

A portal to hell is opened. Sucking in charlie, vaggie and angel, molly ets swept up in it and they are all sent to hell with sarahs horrored scream trailing after them. They are spat out on the battle feild. Imidiatly the four find husk and nifty. Angel pushes molly to husk and tells him to take her to the hotel for safety. He throws her over his shoulder and books it.

(More radiodust. Angel sings a song to alastor thay calms him down enough to regain controlof himself. He crashes into angel, dispelling his form in a cloud of smoke. When it settles he is holding angel and the two ruinite. Alastor is beyond astonished angel chose him over heaven. They leave the feild as the angels left fly away through portals.)

Everyone returns to the hotel. Where sarah and emily come through a ortal in the living room. Sarah wants to take only molly back but emily and charlie makes a stand to take angel to. Molly cuts in to yell at sarah that she made her unsafe. She scared her and adam being allowed to do what he does terrifies her. What if angel wasnt there shed be hurt or worse simply becuase the angels are blood thirsty. Untill she can be garentied safety she wont return

This fight leads to molly staying in hell temperarly. Until heaven starts treating souls like they arent desposable until she doesnt have to fear adam will make her disapear.

While shes there she promises not to leave the hotel. Inside she learns about nifty and fallows her around in curousity. She spends alot f time with husk as hes always around. He teaches her how to make drinks.

Shes wary of alastor hes intimidating but deapite how his words come out as threats they are good advice. Things like dont sign anything. Knowledge is power. Dont ever make a deal with anyone. Treat everyone outside of their hotel as the enemy.
