Hello! Sorry if this has been asked; I used the search function but I couldn't find quite what I was looking for. I'm really interested in contributing to a zine. Not creating one for myself, but contributing to a group collective style zine where multiple artists are contributing to it. I'm having a hard time finding any, though. All of the ones I've found through searching have already been completed. Any suggestions on how to find open ones?
Kiriska: Being active on social media and in artist communities is the best way to keep abreast of open calls of various sorts.
There have been various Twitter (or similar) and Instagram accounts dedicated to reposting and sharing open calls for zines and other projects over the years, but I'm not aware of any at the moment (followers, please feel free to sound off in comments!).
Large artist communities like the AANI Discord can also be a good way to get open call news, or to ask about more resources. If you're interested in fandom zines, being active in the fandom and a part of fandom communities can also help.
Overall, I think actively looking for zine calls is a difficult way to go about it... you have to be a part of a community that does zines, so you'll already be around when the call comes.
ETA: Folks are recommending the Zinetown Discord server. :o

Hello!!! Super excited for this! Just wondering if you would consider making a twitter account for the project as well? 🥺 Only because I'm not active at all on tumblr anymore and I'm afraid of missing out on announcements and sign ups and stuff!!! 🥺🥺🥺
I would love to! However, since I (admin) have ran multiple events + zines in the past, as well as having my own personal twt accounts, it's very....difficult for me to make a new account for this project....for now, I will promote the zine on the Zinetown discord server, and host updates here on tumblr.
Hopefully in the future I will be able to create a twt account for this project! At least, I would love to, since it's my primary social media right now, too! ~Admin

I'm modding two zines that were free digital downloads first and then raised money for a limited print run, currently both are back from the printer and we're doing shipping/fulfillment right now. We did it that way to keep our collective stress down during the zine-creation phase but also because, after putting in that much effort, we wanted a physical thing we could hold in our hands at the end of it. Hahaha. It's been over a year since we started both projects and a lot of work but very fun. Digital-only zines are definitely easier: you can be more flexible with the submission requirements and how you handle the formatting, plus you can avoid issues around money. The first step is to decide the project timeline, and what kind of submissions you want (most zines create shared documents explaining the technical requirements, like min/max word count for writing and file format/resolution/pixel size for art, but if it's friends in a discord server a pinned post is fine). Then once you've made those decisions, you'd do some kind of interest check or ask around your friend group to see who can commit before you went all-in. But anyway, if you're making a zine for the first time the best thing you can do is join one of the zine-specific discords and ask your questions there, people are very helpful! https://twitter.com/zinetown is a good one.

hi there big fan. id say first time writer but i think this is my second ask ive sent you actually. i was meaning to ask how you wind up participating in so many zines! it seems like every time i catch one taking applications it's something i'm just not a fit for, and the ones that i WOULD fit right in with always manage to pass me by. is it just a matter of knowing people? tracking certain tags? luck? genuinely asking because i'd love to take part in something like that and i always see you in so many! ok thats my ask. thanks for writing sooo good i love to read it. sparkle on
Hey Musashi, thanks for the ask, nice to see you in my ask box again.
Anyways, getting into zines! Well, for Ace Attorney getting my start was luck, I didn't even know what a zine was until a new friend told me and some others in our private server that they were in an AA zine and pre-orders had just opened, and so I rushed to support them. I won't ramble your ear off with the whole damn story, but eventually I found the @ aafancalendar which reblogs pretty much every AA event that could be going on. Not every fandom has it's own dedicated calender, but that one is fantastic!
In terms of getting into zines? Most zines have a blind submission process, so I am pleased to say I got into them via skill. But in terms of knowing ppl? That usually helps for running a zine.
Running a zine is a lot of work, but mods also get to be in their own zine, it's kind of a mod privileges thing. So that can be a place where knowing ppl helps, bc if you've shown you're a great mod, they might ask for your help on future projects. But there are still lots of opportunities to get into modding (many zines invite intern mods to learn the ropes!), and you can always just be head mod yourself too, (that's another story for another time). I’m also just autistic af and cold called ppl in the fandom who I admired and wanted to work with and who had worked on other zines. Your mileage may vary, but there’s no harm in asking, just make sure you’re fine taking no for an answer.
That's about how I got into half the zines I'm in, is I'm helping run them. But part of it is just persistence and not counting yourself out before you even apply. I want to get traditionally published too, so been trying the magazine scene, so I already had 1 years worth of magazine rejections under my belt, but even still, it does still hurt to get rejected even from zines, but you have to be persistent. I think I'm at a 50/50 acception to rejection rate when it comes to getting into zines. Sometimes, even if you're skilled, your prose style or whatever just doesn't vibe with the zine mods and that's not a reflection of your skill.
The short of it: put your best works forward and apply to everything you’re interested in.
I'll also leave you with some more resources. So in terms of finding zines from other fandoms, the best resource I've found is @ ZineTown on Twitter. (I know we might not like Twitter, but they're incredibly professional, active and a huge community, extremely worth following.) I'd also suggest joining their Discord channel, bc it is not only great to find zines to contribute to, a ton of mods there also post looking for mods to help out and you can choose to get pinged for specific fandoms, or specific mod roles.
Also if you're into Genshin Impact at all, just from casual observation, they have a bonker yonkers amount of zines, so good time to be a Genshin zine fan.
Sorry this was so rambly, but I hope it helped!
tl;dr: Follow aafancalendar and ZineTown, apply for literally everything. Make sure to have a private friends server to build you back up after rejections (they will happen, sometimes zines have to reject even highly skilled ppl just for numbers reasons). Crying is allowed and encouraged, make sure to have snacks for either celebration or comfort after rejection.

So it’s zine season, and I’m listening to night vale and am just brought to tears by the joy of passionate creation and fun. And I have an idea I would like to do, a solo project or a smaller team kinda thing. And I’m not in this for making a profit it would just be more cost of production kinda thing. But I am terrified of the entire process bc it’s gonna take a while to Write itself. And I would probably put in ao3 too bc the ability to comment would be bigger there and nice bc it’s a very engagement dependent piece of writing. But if I ever get the courage to make it physical (bc I’ve wanted to write books since I was a kid and idk if I’ll ever create original worlds that are good enough but I know fanfic is such a joy for me that if I never do original work this would be enough)
Do you have Any advice about starting this process to create a physical piece of fan work. More so the book part and less merch but any advice you have for someone who really wants to do a self indulgent physical fan work but is terrified to even start
Hi anon!
So I'm going to preface this by saying I don't have any experience on the production side of things at all. I've watched from the outside and as a head mod of a zine that's just getting started (as well as someone who is interested in making their own merch), I've done a decent amount of research. That doesn't necessarily translate into reality though, so take all of this with a grain of salt.
From what I've heard from friends and also from zine servers I'm in, small projects, especially solo projects, are easier to print at local print shops or chains like Staples or whatever. I don't have a ton of links to resources on this but I would recommend calling and getting quotes. You probably won't need huge amounts of product if it's going to be just a small thing, and you definitely want to not spend a lot of money.
I would recommend familiarity with a program like InDesign for formatting professionally. The print shop might be able to give you templates to help you account for margins and bleed, which will be the most important parts of your layout. You can also definitely keep it simple for a personal project, probably, with just regular Word documents or whatever and the print shop can help you, but if you wanted to use this as a basis for creating zines in the future it might be a good learning experience to dip your toe in!
IDK how helpful this is honestly lol it's just what I've picked up from being in the zine community for a few months. If you come off anon I can DM you a link to the zinetown discord server where there are a lot more resources and channels to ask people who are much more experienced than me!

hi zanna! do you have any tips on how you manage a zine production and what goes on behind the scenes /np was just curious and remembered you had tons of experience with this kind of stuff already
i'll offer what i can which probably isn't much since i'm just a lil social media mod and contributor but sure.
yeah so i've been on the zine scene for aboutttt 2-3 years now and probably the easiest way to get into things is to start as a contributor which means like, just putting yourself out there, applying a lot, eventually you'll get into something even if you go through a lot of rejection first (which i myself did, for like a year). being a contributor sort of gives you an idea for zine timelines and what goes on from the creation side. if you want to get into zine modding....unfortunately it's kind of a pain in the ass ngl like the easiest way to mod a zine is to have experience. it's what gives you the upper hand in a lot of mod apps. makes it hard to get into things if you don't have any, i know. good tips are like, join servers like zinetown which have a ton of resources and people to talk to, figure out what aspects of modding you're interested in or suited to (for me, i do social media because i had prior experience managing stuff for my own social media/commissions) and start learning! there's a lot of resources out there for all types of mods, and plenty of people willing to help you learn.
if you can, look for zines offering intern or junior mod positions. those are basically like, you get to help out and study under the mods and learn the ropes without being all on your own. very helpful! these can be few and far between though so sometimes your best bet is going to be luck. if you want to start a zine, it's possible to mod one without experience but you absolutely need to get someone with zine mod (NOT just contributor mind you: MOD) experience on your team. my go-to advice is start with a free digital-only project if you don't have experience; don't mess with physical or financial aspects at first. for those you're going to want someone trustworthy with experience anyway, for both shipping and finance/production. don't jump headfirst into a physical project if you don't have any experience because it will probably not end well.
um...honestly there's a ton that goes on bts of zines that i myself don't even know the first thing about. i see the surface and i help out where i can with my team doing production stuff but i can only do so much in non-social media areas, so most of what i do is just communications and public relations. i do a lot on the front end of things (making forms, setting up apps, social media posts, etc) and then i do a lot of updates and poking contributors to keep them on schedule but when it comes to shipping, graphics, etc i am not an expert. there is a whole lot that goes on behind the scenes though, even before a zine starts running. again: making forms, drafting emails, figuring out page count/how many contributors you want, writer word counts, themes, rules, etc etc, and don't get me started on pitches god pitch approvals can be such a coordination nightmare lol. but yeah best advice is join zinetown and look at all the resources they have compiled there because there's a good amount! and channels to talk to people for advice.
