Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask - Cotton Candy
Rating: 2/5
TL;DR: Cotton Candy scent is disappointing due to a strong blue raspberry smell and the flavor is unpleasant.
Iā€™ve purchased the Laneige lip mask a few times over the years and while itā€™s alright, there are other lip balms/masks that I prefer. One perk Laneige has that I think contributes to its hype is the range of flavors and the seasonal/limited edition releases. Although Iā€™ve smelled most of the flavors, Iā€™ve only purchased Berry, Sweet Candy, Peppermint, and Mint Choco. Then they released a cotton candy flavor.
When I first heard they were coming out with cotton candy, I immediately had nostalgic thoughts of Bubble Yum cotton candy bubble gum and despite having a TON of lip balms, I had to indulge in this cotton candy lip mask. I ordered online so I wasnā€™t able to smell the sample in store before hand. Formula wise, it seems like the same formula with a nifty swirl, but it all goes downhill from there.
First, the scentā€¦as other reviews said, it definitely has a blue raspberry scent to it, which isnā€™t bad but I was expecting that distinct almost sickening sweet cotton candy scent. Instead itā€™s more of blue raspberry cotton candy. Second, the flavorā€¦Iā€™m not one to constantly lick off lip balm but since youā€™re bound to get some in your mouth, the flavor should mimic the scent even if mild. Iā€™m not quite sure how to describe the flavor but it is truly AWFUL! Maybe playdough? Itā€™s bad enough that I honestly canā€™t wear the balm longer than a few seconds without wanting to rub it off. Iā€™ve never experienced this with any other laneige flavor.
Overall, the cotton candy flavor was a huge disappointment, Iā€™d suggest literally any other flavor if you buy this lip mask especially if itā€™s your first time using the Laneige lip mask. Sweet Candy is probably my favorite. I do prefer olehenriksen, summer fridays, and topicals lip balms over laneige though.

Fenty Icon Semi-Matte Refillable Lipstick Set in shade Sorta Single from 2023 Holiday Collection
I hadnā€™t seen this swatched anywhere and the shade looked so pretty online so I took a chance and splurged. Online it looked a bit more pink but in person itā€™s a cranberry shade. Perfect for Fall! I own several Fenty products but this is the first bullet lipstick Iā€™ve tried. Itā€™s not transfer proof but blotting it leaves a gorgeous stain that lasted several hours.
This is a very bold color for me to wear but I think Iā€™m able to pull it off. Itā€™s the perfect holiday shade, itā€™s like the bolder older sister of Glossier Generation G in Cranberry.

KVD Everlasting Hyperlight Liquid Lipstick in Moth Orchid
Rating: 2/5
I did receive this product for free from @influenster and @kvdbeauty in exchange for my HONEST review. (Repeat 2/5 rating)
I have the original Everlasting liquid lipstick in the shade Lovecraft that is my all time favorite lippie. I wore it for my wedding and it did not budge! Since it has been discontinued, I will only wear it on special occasions. Iā€™ve been intrigued by the KVD reformulation wondering how it compared to the OG so I was excited to receive the shade Moth Orchid in exchange for my honest review.
Unfortunately, the KVD Everlasting Hyperlight Liquid Lipstick doesnā€™t hold a candle to the original formula and there isnā€™t a shade close to my favorite Lovecraft. The original formula was super pigmented, easy to apply, and quite literally lasted all day. Moth Orchid is supposed to be a ā€œsoft pinkā€ but itā€™s much brighter and more coral than I anticipated. Although itā€™s pigmented and it is indeed ā€œhyper lightā€ Itā€™s also very streaky when applied, I had to stretch my lips out and swipe multiple times to get an even layer of color. I applied before leaving my house for work, and found lipstick on my coffee cup after my commute; by lunchtime it looked as though I just had some lipliner or very faded lipstick.
Tumblr media
The formula does feel nice, very lightweight, and itā€™s not instantly transferrable like some other liquid lipsticks, but I wouldnā€™t describe it as transfer proof. If youā€™ve never used the original formula then this is a great liquid lipstick but even then there are better options out there. If you have used the original Kat Von D formula then the only similarities really is the name.

Hella Thicc Mascara by Fenty Beauty
Hella Thicc is an appropriate name because this mascara will definitely make your lashes THICK!!! From that perspective itā€™s amazing. But unfortunately I get more flaking with this mascara than I have with any others. I struggle to wear contacts with this mascara because it flakes into my eyes so bad. It also doesnā€™t seem to hold curl well, by the end of the day my lashes are flat. Itā€™s alright but I wouldnā€™t repurchase it, Iā€™ve got other mascaras that work better for me.

I received this product for free from Influenster and Dr. Pepper in exchange for my honest review. I was actually surprised by this. I LOVE Dr. Pepper, like itā€™s been my all time favorite beverage most of my life. Iā€™m kind of a believer of the ā€œwhy mess up a good thingā€ and prefer the OG DP but Iā€™ve had DP with raspberry flavor and it wasnā€™t that bad. However, I donā€™t like cream soda or vanilla flavored soda, so I assumed I wasnā€™t going to like this. Luckily I think this has a stronger strawberry flavor than it does cream. Would I choose it over original DP? Definitely not. Would I completely turn it down if offered and it was the only option? Probably not. #drpepperstrawberriescream @drpepper @influenster #drpepper https://www.instagram.com/p/CqVXTlDOQuz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Beauty Blush Wand in Pink Pop I received this product for free from Influenster and Charlotte Tilbury in exchange for my honest review. Overall I like this product. I got the color Pink Pop and it reminds me of glossier cloud paint in puff. The color is pretty, it blends easily, and it lasts all day. My only complaint is the tube is misleading. You'd think you get a lot more product based on the size of the tube but it's maybe half full. The pic I included was after squeezing all of the air out after using it once. CT beauty blush wand is 0.4oz and Glossier cloud paint is 0.33oz. Not that much more but the CT tube looks massive compared to Glossier. I do like the included sponge applicator on CT though. #complimentary #CTBlushWandsxInfluenster @Influenster @CharlotteTilbury @glossier #ctblushwand #beautyblushwand #mattebeautyblushwand #pillowtalk #cloudpaint https://www.instagram.com/p/CoxPY_euuqJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TL;DR: might not be best for oily skin, but should work great as a mixer I have very oily skin and large pores, because of this I have a hard time finding foundation that works. ā€œRadiantā€ or even ā€œnaturalā€ finish often means it way too shiny for my oily skin. This foundation is supposed to give a natural skin finish so immediate hesitation, but itā€™s Gaga so I caved. I had no idea what shade to get because the color wheel in the site shows ā€œneutralā€ shades that look pretty damn pink and yellow. Why is it so hard for companies to have true neutral shades?!? I used the shade finder tool on the website and was recommended 070 Neutral so thatā€™s the shade I ordered. This shade is supposed to be fair with neutral peach undertones. I added a pic of my 2 holy grail foundations (Fenty and Doublewear) and another one I just picked up (beautyblender). All of these foundations are supposed to be ā€œneutralā€. Fenty is the closest true neutral that Iā€™ve found. Itā€™s my all time favorite ride or die. Doublewear is probably the closest shade match but polar opposite formula. Shades swatched: - 150 Fenty Pro Filtr Soft Matte - 1N1 Estee Lauder Doublewear - 1.4N beautyblender bounce Liquid whip - 070 Haus Labs triclone skin tech My first impression of Haus Labs is itā€™s very runny even after shaking the bottle a ton. A little goes a long way too. I tried applying with my fingers, a brush, and kind of a sponge. Iā€™m a big fan of using my fingers because I get streaks with brushes and sponges seem to emphasize my pores. My fingers did seem to give the best application but thatā€™s my preference so someone who is used to using a brush/sponge might like those more. This foundation is definitely light to medium coverage and canā€™t be built up further than that. Without the powder itā€™s much too dewy for me but I think the powder does a decent job of drying it down a bit. I wore it by itself around the house and it seemed alright but then I wore it mixed with beautyblender liquid whip which is a bit yellow on me. To be honest, I think this foundation will best be used as a mixer to adjust shades of other foundations or make full coverage ones a little more lightweight. https://www.instagram.com/p/CilYooruSJK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ergodox First Thoughts... Current Cons: - the wrist rests are silicone so basically dust/doghair magnets - keycaps are bigger than Iā€™m used to - currently looking for new keycaps - figuring out the best key layout for my style of work and not getting frustrated - the layout is different (ortholinear) which definitely takes some getting used to and is causing to mishit keys - frequent typos until I get used to the layout, muscle memory of a standard keyboard and ortholinear are the biggest factors here Current Pros: - custom mapping of key combos is awesome! - example: having a key dedicated to copy/paste, and screenshot - each key can have a different output based on if itā€™s tapped, held, double-tapped, or tapped then held so a single key could have up to 4 different outputs based on how you hit it - one of their suggestions is to eliminate the need for shift keys by having a key do the shifted action by holding the key down - definitely enjoying the split/tilt feeling again without the disconnection issues I had with my sculpt #ergodox #ergodoxez #mechanicalkeyboard #gazzew #gazzewbobau4 #ergonomic #keycaps #coder #programmer #womeninstem #womenwhocode https://www.instagram.com/p/CdWC3kUO38m/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the Miss America Pageant, and with that comes the usual opinion articles bad-mouthing ā€œbeauty pageantsā€. Pageants do have their flaws, but as a former ā€œbeauty queenā€, I feel obligated to defend the benefits pageantry has to offer which are rarely ever mentioned in these bashing fests. Allow me to provide a different narrative from the perspective of a woman who competed and judged pageants and dealt with far more ā€œprejudicesā€ in her career than she ever did with pageantry.
TL; DR: The only people thinking pageantry is negative are you and non-participants. Youā€™re judging a book by its cover, the ā€œfinal competitionā€, which is dramatized to gain viewers because thatā€™s what production companies do. They produce fancy shows to make more money. Take the televised competition away and what do you REALLY know about pageantry?
Every opinion piece tends to mention the same issues which all stem from the pageant they see on TV. This is known as the final competition which is just one component of a national pageant and only 20% of the contestants participate. What you donā€™t see are the numerous preliminary competitions, workshops, community service, and fun events that happen prior to the final competition.
The on-stage question is the most difficult and truly competitive portion of the final event. Sometimes a contestant may stumble on her words or give a poor answer, leading the trolls to mock her intelligence. The goal of the on-stage question is for a contestant to show her ability to answer a difficult question on the spot in a limited amount of time. She must do this on a stage in front of thousands of people under bright lights with a camera in front of her face that is broadcasting to the world. The view you see is from a camera that is on stage right in front of the contestants. Do you usually find that you can answer the questions with ease? Are you answering from the comfort of a couch in your own home? Your environment can have a big impact on how you present yourself to others. Answering a question about education is easy peasy when youā€™re at home or chilling with some friends, but would you answer differently if you were in a job interview? These women are given a minute to answer a difficult question in a confident, articulate, and composed manner in the most on-the-spot environment you can be in. Since the final reward is a national title, the on-stage question is a job interview. They are interviewing for a year-long job as a national title holder. Itā€™s not just a crown or sash or scholarship money; national title holders become the spokesperson for the pageant during their reign. New narrative ā€“ the on-stage question is a job interview.
Speaking of job interviews, were you ever given advice on how to dress or present yourself in an interview? Donā€™t say this, do say that, wear a tie, roll your shoulders back, donā€™t use filler words. You could spend hours preparing for an interview, hoping to stand out amongst other candidates, but still feel like you bombed it. You dwell on whether you said the right thing, did you say too much, or did the interviewer even understand you. Job interviews are hard! People make careers out of coaching others to find jobs. Think back to when you were younger and first started looking for a ā€œserious grown upā€ job. Who prepared you for that job? Did anyone truly prepare you for a corporate interview? This is where a major benefit of pageantry comes into play: the interview.
Every pageant has a similar scoring structure, and the interview competition carries the heaviest weight of the final score. They will practice for months, going through mock interviews, reviewing recordings of themselves to find areas of improvement. In the interview, contestants are asked questions about their platform (whatā€™s something youā€™re passionate about), what they would do with the national title (why should we hire you), and current events or major issues. Contestants must answer with confidence and poise, exactly like a job interview except they must also be knowledgeable about whatā€™s going on in the world. Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING prepared me for job interviews more than pageant competitions. I interviewed and was hired with a Fortune 50 company based on the skills I gained from pageant interviews and spent several years coaching college students and interns on how to interview. My husband is a licensed attorney who advises law school students every year. I asked him to help me give mock interviews to state contestants whose ages ranged from 7 to mid-30s. After the interviews, he made a comment that these ladies were more well-spoken and presented themselves better than any of his law school students, including the 7-year-old!
Throughout my entire corporate career, there have always been articles or books on how to present yourself at work to get a promotion or be taken seriously. How to carry yourself when walking into a room or look engaged at the conference table. Tips like standing tall, donā€™t fidget, make eye contact, turning towards a person to show interest, how to calm nerves when youā€™re uncomfortable. From a corporate perspective these all seem logical for someone wanting to progress in their career. These same tips and techniques are what the other areas of competition focus on. What you see as a woman walking on stage in an evening gown is a woman who spent hours practicing walking in high heels with excellent posture, how to turn and show unique features of a dress, being mindful of time and every aspect of her body from head to toe, all while maintaining eye contact with judges. Take those skills off stage and you have a woman who can command a conference room. Every movement is planned and controlled.
Onto the swimsuit or physical health competition which gets the most criticism. When someone loses a bunch of weight, what do they usually do? Post a bunch of pictures of themselves to show their weight loss because theyā€™re proud of what theyā€™ve accomplished, and they feel good about themselves. Contestants spend months training for national competitions including dieting and exercise. The swimsuit shows off physique, but these ladies work HARD to get in shape and are proud to show the goals theyā€™ve reached. Many contestants will share their fitness journeys and progress photos the same way people do when trying to lose weight.
Thereā€™s a particular section of this opinion piece that I want to emphasize:
ā€œIt mocks women by saying that you can get an education, be financially independent, live life on your own terms. But your validation comes through looks, so donā€™t think youā€™re all that, till youā€™re validated. Sadly, girls internalise all of this from a very young age. And it haunts women forever, inflicting lifelong damage on mental health and self-esteem.ā€
In all my years of pageantry I have never heard a contestant say that a pageant inflicted lifelong damage on her mental health and self-esteem. The greatest benefit of pageantry is the confidence it gives you and supportive network of outstanding women youā€™ll meet along the way. Society isnā€™t great and has a tendency of being patriarchal, but pageants teach you skills and build you a network to help you survive and thrive in such a society. During competitions, these girls spend all day with each other for several days in a row. They get nervous, they have a wardrobe malfunction, they have self-doubtā€¦ā€¦. In the end, they all support each other! Backstage these girls are helping each other change outfits, praying with each other, boosting each other up. At my last national competition, I helped sew a girlā€™s outfit right before going on stage. After the competition, win or lose, they come off stage to a group of supporters to help them realize what they just accomplished. These competitions help build their self-esteem by teaching them skills that can be used off stage in the real world. Looking at my pageant network today, theyā€™re some of the most successful women I know; these women are doctors, business owners, and corporate executives. More importantly, any one of them would answer a call in a heartbeat if any of us were in need. My network of pageant ladies is incredible and has provided lifelong improvements to my mental health and self-esteem.
To summarize, all negative opinions focus on the final competition and the harm that person believes pageants do to women. These peopleā€™s opinions are from the outside, someone without any real knowledge or experience. The see pageantry only for the televised events and refuse to see how pageantry could build a womanā€™s strength, confidence, success, and network. As the saying goes, ā€œdonā€™t knock it until youā€™ve tried itā€.
The National News: A century after they began, isn't it time to end beauty pageants?
