I go to a stupidly fancy liberal arts uni in India but my favourite anecdote ever comes from my bahujan political thought prof who met her at airport once. He was a big fan but when he shook Roy's hand he said it was very soft and he knew almost immediately that that woman had never performed a day of labor in her life 😭

btw I hate talking about this and I hate taking shots at artists because I have no artistic capability myself but I just realised that a lot of "small home grown desi businesses" that are hyped on instagram are just UC people from the metropolis stealing the ideas and designs of marginalized and Adivasi people. Or worse, buying products in bulk from the villages or craft workshops in the small towns and then selling them as their own for EXORBITANT prices on instagram stores. And I'm not talking out of my ass. I spoke to Adivasi people in Shantiniketan and they TOLD me this is happening. guys, do consider visiting such places or looking for NGOs that support their craftsmanship instead of promoting rich South Kolkata-South Delhi types who steal the artwork of the marginalized for "desi academia aesthetics uwu"

When you think about it, Oppenheimer and Barbie go together perfectly. Oppenheimer is the "father" of the atom bomb, he creates it and sends it out into the world, eventually unable to control the uses and implications of his creation. Meanwhile, Barbie is a creation looking for meaning, who eventually goes beyond the limits of what she was originally imagined for (with her creator's acknowledgement that she has no ability to control Barbie). Both movies are about other things but they are also about the unpredictable nature of creations once they are in the world.
