We will return to our regularly scheduled vampire feeding after this short infomercial.
Demons can sense a lot of stuff but know very few specifics so they spend a lot of times guessing. Guess who hasn’t figured Hank’s preferences out yet?

Hank, local senior monster fucker.
I had something else in mind for this week’s comic but realized I had to make this chapter first. Everything about it sets up stuff for later, including the senior threesome. The vampire clan drama continues in the background no matter how much Eli doesn’t care.

I always wanted Hank and Eli to play The Monster and The Old Man Who Warns The Protagonists and to encounter paranormal investigators. With this comic I could do both.
Originally they were going to be Ghost Adventures inspired but I had a eureka moment with Buzzfeed Unsolved/Ghost Files, especially the fandom version of them: a demon pretending to be a skeptic to mess with his human friend.
The fandom of course do a very cute and funny version of that, but it made me think about how messed up and evil it would be if done seriously. Gaslighting in its purest form.
Because the inspiration would be super obvious I considered naming these guys Shaun and Bryan but by the end it had developed way beyond that. Let’s just say, I hope you like these guys because they’ll be back. A lot.

Whenever I try to explain Red Prism to people I call it slice of life horror. You get it.
Hank and Eli from @thehmn 's 'Red Prism' doing the sode-kuru😆
I wanted to draw them for a while now cuz I rly love the comic, and then I read that article about gestures that are somehow considered romantic in Japan, and well, yeah. Hank and Eli.

When you realize your undead boyfriend is starting to regain his humanity because he’s getting more annoying. It’s a hurdle all relationships have to go through, right?

I’ve been working tirelessly on the Red Prism Halloween special and I’m hoping I can finish it in time, buuuuut I’ve also when been watching a lot of anime and I just had to give it a go.
I’m thinking in the anime version Hank is a troublemaker at school who always gets in fights because he struggles with an abusive home life, but he also has quiet, kind moments of saving mice from puddles and butterflies from spiderwebs and one day he helps a bat who turns out to be Eli. Much murder and mayhem ensures.

What did Eli look like when he was alive? There you have it.
This was one of the very first chapter ideas I had for Red Prism. It illustrates Eli’s neutral evil and his relationship to Hank perfectly. Your chances of surviving an encounter with Eli goes up significantly if Hank is around, but Eli is also more likely to let vulnerable people live because they rarely report anything to the police.
And yeah, Hank is a frequent customer of sex workers. He’s definitely the type of guy who’d end up befriending the local streetwalkers if he wasn’t a nomad.

The ability to turn into a big dog is one of the forgotten vampire abilities, probably because it reminds us too much of werewolves. Also, Eli goes by Dracula rules regarding the sun, meaning he can be outside in daylight but his powers are significantly weakened.
People have asked why some people die and some people survive their encounter with Eli and Hank. There’s method to the madness. I have a whole list of rules for wether it ends in murder or not, but the big ones are: Eli kills indiscriminately but only for food or out of anger. Anyone is fair game for him though, no matter age, gender or anything else.
Hank doesn’t kill but he is a walking bag of issues and past traumas so he doesn’t like hurting people who are weaker than him (and Eli respects this by not feeding on them when Hank is around) but might also randomly attack men who remind him of his dad.
In other words, wether people live or die depends on wether Eli and/or Hank is present.
