The first museum object I’m conserving - a Roman black burnished ware jar!

It’s honestly crazy to think that I started my programme 4 weeks ago and now I’m being trusted with such a cool artefact. I’ll likely fix up previous attempts at conservation and attach pieces that have broken off

Unfortunately I don’t know too much about how selective the national trust is :( based on the competitiveness of the general museum/heritage industry here, I’d imagine it can get pretty competitive depending on the role & location

I’m in Wales so I’m mostly familiar with Cadw, which I have volunteered for (but rarely has jobs open). There will at least be far more opportunities available with NT, that’s for sure

If you use Reddit, I’d recommend r/museumpros (it’s open to general heritage pros too, not just museums). I’d imagine you could potentially find someone who may have some direct experience with NT, English Heritage, or Historic England. In addition to this, you may be able to find people on LinkedIn (I know, gross) or even instagram that have attended the Edinburgh programme or that have positions with NT and you could ask them for advice, how they felt about the programme, or how they got their positions

Hi!!! I’m planning on going into historic architecture conservation for my masters once at finish up my art history BA. My dream job is to work for the National Trust, though I’m in the US. Just saying hi since we have such similar academic alignment! I’m in my 2nd year right now, so I’m really intrigued about someone who’s a bit ahead of me in this track.

I think there’s some pretty nice architecture conservation programmes here (York if I recall? Not too sure though since I’m doing object conservation haha).

You didn’t necessarily ask, but here’s some general advice for the field: start volunteering and try to find relevant internships if you have the time and ability to. Knowing people and having experience will get you super far, plus it’s very fun and can help confirm what your interests are!

I applied for a placement at a museum and I’m so desperate for it 😭 there were two different ones and I was rejected for the first one (rip) and I was invited for an “informal chat” about the second one

So so so desperate to get it. The chat is in like 3 days and I’m terrified
