Flourish Collaborative Shares an Unpopular Opinion
Tumblr media
Editors Note: This is another one of the truth slaying emails I got from Flourish Collaborative. I couldn’t not share it! -JL
The small signs have been there all along: "Do I use "I" or "we" when talking from my brand?" "How much is too much when posting about my life?" "I just lost a major client. How do I muster getting out of bed?" The topic of conversation today seems less about growth, strategy, and service, and more about the inner struggle between two personas at war.
We as an entrepreneurial collective have interchanged brand identity for personal identity. We confused brand stories for personal diaries. We mistook business failures for personal failures. We believed that only raw, personal transparency could build connection and convert to sales. Somewhere along the way, we forgot that we were running a business. Now, we spend more time trying to "crack the code" on sharing personal beliefs, trials, and daily details with an audience than we do giving actual value related to the thing your business offers. There are ways for a business to grow, connect, and thrive without meddling with your private affairs. In fact, businesses have been doing so for years.                                                                                                                                           Having a business is an amazing gift. It allows you to be a part of something much greater than yourself; to do good in larger numbers; to have an impact on people you wouldn't otherwise know.                                     You may be the captain, but you're not the ship; and you're certainly not the crew. Allow yourself the permission to take the weight of giving 100% of your very being to this business and the public sphere off of your shoulders. There is you. There is your business. There is your target. Let's get back to work. - Caty & Erica

Ingredients
1/2 apple, cored, skin on, chopped into small pieces
1/2 orange, rind on, sliced into small pieces, large seeds removed (plus more for garnish)
3-4 Tbsp (41-55 g) organic brown sugar (or 3 Tbsp (37.5 g) organic cane sugar)

Add apples, oranges, and sugar to a large pitcher and muddle with a muddler or wooden spoon for 45 seconds.
Add orange juice and brandy and muddle again to combine for 30 seconds.
Add red wine and stir to incorporate, then taste and adjust flavor as needed. I added a bit more brandy, orange juice and brown sugar. Stir to combine.
Add ice and stir once more to chill. Serve as is, or with a bit more ice. Garnish with orange segments (optional).
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours, though best when fresh.

1 Large Bottle (750 ml) Pinot Grigio
1/2 Cup Sugar
4 Limes, Juiced
1 Cup White Grape/Peach Juice Blend

In a large pitcher, combined the lime juice, grape/peach juice blend and lemon-lime soda.
Add the sugar and stir until dissolved.
Pour wine into the juice/sugar mixture and mix well.
Add strawberries and peaches.
This can be made ahead, however do not add the fruit until near time to serve, otherwise the fruit loses it's texture.

1 (750 ml) bottle rosé wine
1/2 cup Pom Wonderful pomegranate juice
1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (3 lemons)

8 large fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered
2 red plums, pitted and sliced ¼ inch thick

AUGUST LOVES: AIR CONDITIONING
Tumblr media
As we muscle through these hot summer days, we reached out to Tersh at Tristar Air Conditioning to share some tips to help you extend the life of your air conditioning units.
TIP ONE Change your air filters every month! We know that the packaging on the filter that you just paid $35 for says it will last 90 days, but this is not true in many cases. A restricted air filter can result in coils freezing and increased humidity in your home. If your coils freeze up constantly then it can result in damage to the compressor. We tell people to change their filter every time their electric bill comes in the mail. The bill comes the same time each month, so this will help you to stay on top of changing your air filters every month.
TIP TWO Make sure nothing is blocking any of your supply or return registers. This tip has a lot to do with Tip #1. The reduced air flow from blocking these registers can result in coils freezing up. A frozen coil not only causes your home to heat up, but as it begins to defrost, the water could leak outside of the drain pan. If your ac unit is in the attic then this water would come through your ceiling resulting in major damage to your sheet rock ceiling.
TIP THREE Turn off the breaker to your air conditioning unit during a power outage. This time of year, we experience storms almost every afternoon, and often times these storms result in a short power outage. If you experience an outage, flip the breaker off to prevent a surge of power to the unit when the electricity comes back to your home. Sometimes the electricity will flicker a few times before actually staying on for good, and if the air conditioning unit tries to come on each time the power flickers, the surge could cause premature failures.

Dispatch from Flourish Collaborative
Tumblr media
Editor’s Note: This was an email from my buddies at Flourish Collaborative that I wanted to share with you because it touches on so many wonderful points, including a great testimonial from another TSG Savannah member and details about their newly launched e-course! Enjoy! -JL
What's the obsession with inspiration? Whenever we meet someone that we admire, our first question is always, "What inspires you?". But here's the thing: inspiration makes the thing better; motivation gets the thing done. Any creative knows that inspiration is fleeting; it comes from any and all things, and certainly shouldn't be attributed to success. What creates success is motivation - that inner drive pushing you past what's comfortable to make the ordinary extraordinary. For us, it's the newfound confidence we see in our clients about their business. Take Winslett with Lettees, for example:
Tumblr media
Before we met Winslett, she was struggling with how to move forward with a business that had evolved from so many different things over the years. Not having the confidence to speak about her brand was keeping her from: - Contacting wholesalers. - Attending networking events. - Revamping her website. - Taking new brand photography. Now, Winslett has all of these *crucial* biz efforts back on her agenda, and is acting stronger than ever. Just look at her new marketing efforts:
Tumblr media
Confidence in your business comes from having solid direction. What does solid direction look like for your business? It's being able to: + Explain what it is you do and why it matters - on the spot. + Know exactly who would most benefit from your business (and where to find them). + Easily distinguish yourself from everyone else. And we get it. Checking all of things off of your list takes time, money, and support. But we believe that now is the time for you to feel more confident in your brand efforts than ever before. Which is why we decided to take the first half of our Bloom Package and slash the price by over a thousand dollars. For the first time ever, you can now watch and listen to us walk you through your messaging, target demographic, and aesthetic direction at your own pace for a fraction of the cost.
Tumblr media
Introducing: Brand Bloom, our evergreen branding e-course. Oh, and of course we don't expect for you to pay all at once. How does breaking up the course fee into four easy payments sound? Sounds great - sign me up!

One of my favorite foods to eat in the summer is tomatoes. Fresh, ripe and delicious, they are great on sandwiches, alone with some salt, or part of a delicious caprese!
This tomato jam recipe from Mark Bittman is one of my favorites and it is great way to use the bounty from your garden and spread it on toast or crackers!

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon fresh grated or minced ginger
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon salt
1 jalapeño or other peppers, stemmed, seeded and minced, or red pepper flakes or cayenne to taste.
PREPARATION
1.  Combine all ingredients in a heavy medium saucepan, Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring often.
2. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until mixture has consistency of thick jam, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning, then cool and refrigerate until ready to use; this will keep at least a week.
