I photographed this Quechua woman as she walked home from the top of the large hill overlooking her community. As she approached us, we noticed that she was nearly blind. In fact, this woman appeared to be completely fragile, dangerously thin, with an age well over 80. Concerned, we didn’t know how she would get home in her condition, and from such a high place. I was amazed to see how easily she navigated the steep paths down the hill and to the road. This is her land. And though many I know at that age live with caretakers or canes, she moved freely and confidently alone. It was heartbreaking, yet strangely encouraging to witness her poise. I realized that from my meager privileged perspective, I’ve looked at rural and impoverished communities as lacking - as poor - as weak. But, they are not weak at all. Though these communities may not function like modern westernized cities, they are full of life, pride and culture. This is a strong people, and their traditions and ways of life span millennia. They do not need me or anyone else as a crutch, but walk proudly the roads they know by heart. This photo is part of my ongoing series #PeopleOfPeru focusing on #AndeanCulture. #Quechua #Culture #Andes #Cuzco #Peru (at Cusco, Peru)

Daily Travel Photo: Lake Titicaca, Peru
Photograph by Christian Heeb, laif/Redux
Llamas gather on a hillside overlooking Peru’s Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest-altitude navigable body of water. Because of the llamas’ ability to move heavy packs over the rough Andean terrain, native people in this region have used them as pack animals for centuries. At one time thousands of llamas grazed the lake’s high basin.
