So this will be my last post for some time … possibly my last post ever - I’ve thought about this a lot for quite a long time now. Should I stay? Should I go? Is this beneficial? What’s the point? - I went vegan for the animals with the help of @weareveganuary in January 2016 after 11 years as a vegetarian. I set up this page in April of the same year on Facebook initially and later adding in Instagram. My intention was to show how easy it was to follow a vegan diet by posting my own homemade concoctions as well as restaurant reviews in Ireland and abroad. During this time I have seen friends, family, colleagues and strangers go vegan, but also very notably I have seen many people ignore the information and refuse to change. I am an intersectional vegan now for quite a long time. This means that I recognise the interrelationship between all forms of injustice and abuse. Veganism is first and foremost an animal rights movement, but also it is about the impact of animal agriculture on the planet we live on. This place we call Earth and home. The only place we will ever know. It is also about the terrible treatment of other humans in this industry. It is also about the impact on people’s health and the consumption of animal products is the main driver behind the leading causes of human diseases such as heart disease and cancer. People choose to ignore all of this in order to have the #PersonalChoice to continue consuming animal corpses and their excretions. That’s all fine … sure … Well except that we are facing complete climate collapse primarily due to animal agriculture. Supply is driven by demand! If you don’t buy a product it doesn’t get produced. It’s really simple! So the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change’s most recent outlook is grim as fuck. Chances are we will far exceed the 1.5C average global warming before the end of the century. People are either unwilling to change or are not willing to change fast enough. This means game over. I don’t want to think about this anymore while others are only starting to wake up when it is already too late. I haven’t decided what I’ll do with this account yet. Incredible 41st birthday dinner in @balbirniehouse near Markinch in Fife (near Edinburgh) in Scotland with my amazing OH - 7 course vegan taster menu @ Seven in The Orangery @ Balbirnie House - The savoury dishes and the sorbet where all exquisite and the wine pairings were for the most part exceptional. The NZ Sauvignon Blanc OTU was like no wine I’ve ever tasted before and would turn me towards white (on occasion anyhow 😉). - The flavours in the savoury dishes were so complex and well combined. Coddle-style linguini 👀 - Vegan bacon and sausages from @dennyest1820 with sliced steamed carrot in a creamy veg stock sauce. The OH has an onion allergy so I left that ingredient out, but besides that this is (loosely) a Dublin coddle with linguini pasta instead of potatoes. - I recommend the bronze die cast linguini from @lidlireland as the rough texture holds sauce really well! Halloween share platter 😵‍💫 - Obsessed with the Plant Kitchen Southern-fried tenders from @marksandspencerireland and the new @mccainukie waffle fries were very nice also, but the showstopper was these mini burger bites! I made 20 tiny burgers from a block of @beyondmeateu Beyond Meat and then melted on a tiny square of vegan @applewood_cheese cheese. I cut cornichon pickles to make tiny sliced gherkins and then finally sliced baby plum tomatoes to make a tiny version of a slice of beef tomato. Vegan breakfast in 2021! 😍 - Really loving the @dennyest1820 plant-based products. I’ve been eating their vegan sausages for years now and I’m totally obsessed. Their bacon is really good too and they now have ham and turkey style slices, among other products. I have to say that @veganlife.ie never disappoint when you are looking for tips. 😁💚🥳 - Since @tescoirl stopped stocking @beyondmeat burgers I haven’t been able to find them anywhere in shops. Quite a few restaurants/takeaways have them now, in particular the Beyond Chi burger from @vface.ie in Smithfield is very good, but alas none to buy to make at home! I messaged @veganlife.ie earlier today asking if they knew where to get them and @allylouisa_ got back letting me know that they are only available in two shops in Ireland at present and these are @evergreenhealthfoods and @kildarefarmfoods - The latter is not too far from me in Leixlip so I took a trip out and holy crap look at what I came back with! The burgers are actually way cheaper than Tesco as well … and I haven’t even tried the mince and sausages yet! I got 6 packs of burgers, 4 packs of sausages and 2 packs of mince for €43 so if you plan on going just be warned that I’ve cleared more than half of their stock! 😜 - Just be careful with the mince though. It is normally frozen, but they have defrosted it and put a new BBE sticker on it which means that it cannot be refrozen at home. Micro-bread experimentation 🤣 - I love the Einkorn soda bread I’ve been making, but the normal loaf size is too much for two people to eat before it starts to go bad. Unlike shop bread there are no preservatives so it doesn’t have the same shelf life and we’re not fans of freezing it. - So I bought this pack of cute mini non-stick loaf tins and did about 2/5 of the normal recipe and half the cooking time, but with same ‘Dutch oven’ type approach and ended up with this little cutie! - This is a much more manageable size of loaf and it’s not exactly a bread that you are looking to make sandwiches with so the smaller slice size is fine and maybe even better actually. - I need to wait for it to fully cool to see how it is and I know I need to adjust the measurements a little.
