I Saw A Bunch Of Movies This Weekend
“Kubo and The Two Strings” - One of the best movies of the year.
“Don’t Look Now” - I now understand so much about horror cinematography.
“Now You See Me” - I had a lot of fun.
“Now You See Me 2″ - This thing was AWFUL.
“America’s Sweethearts” - Fun to rewatch. Not as good as I remembered.
“Working Girl” - Liked it. Why does it have the soundtrack from “Lion King”?
“The Game” - One of my favorite movies. Still terrific.
“The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button” - People think it’s boring. I love it.
“Enemy” - Interesting, but overcomplicated. Great director.

I had a really shitty week and then my wife bought me tickets to see Charlie Cox in his play ‪#‎incognito‬. It was just what i needed. It was an incredible play. It was intense and beautiful and sad and just great. Charlie was such a genuine and cool guy. He even signed my Daredevil helmet.
Glad to know my favorite superhero (Daredevil) could literally come to the rescue on one of the worst weeks I've ever had.

Here's a crazy story about today ... A crazy story about Prince.
I was working the MTV Upfront Presentation … so when the news hit, all of a sudden half a bunch of people just left the presentation venue without telling anyone, in the middle of Kendrick Lamar sound checking, to go back to 1515 and discuss how to address the death of an icon. Those who stayed figured out how to tell the masses who would be arriving shortly. It was bizarre. Because it was music television ... MTV ... everything just kinda stopped. It was surreal.
But that isn't the crazy part ... There was a moment during the show where all these unique characters, specific to New York, paraded across the show floor with the MTV Moon Man. And before this moment I am in the green room with all of this crazy weird talent: The Naked Cowboy, a Statue Of Liberty street performer, a Yankee Stadium hot dog vendor and ... of all people … the mascot, Mr. Met.
So … I begin telling people about the passing of a legend, of Prince and I get to Mr. Met. There the person is, in full costume … this face … This giant white smiling face, and we're discussing the purple one. And the loss. And there is quiet for a second, a very long second, and then that smiling face … that remarkably adorable … and kind face … put it’s hands over it’s eyes and bowed its head - COMPLETELY SILENT, COMPLETELY IN CHARACTER. It was the most bizarre and astounding thing … This smiling face … one that i can’t help but smile at because it’s so a mascot, lovable and meant to bring such joy to the world … innocently finding a way to convey sadness. I saw that face bow and the hands cover it ... and I just started crying.
Mr. Met. That is the image will forever be burned into my memory as what I saw the day Prince died.
I listened to Purple Rain as I walked to the subway tonight and looked down at the shining purple wristband on my wrist that was handed out to the staff today after we all got the news. A sign that we were all considering him. I looked at the wristband and I had to fight back tears. Then I thought of Mr. Met. That smiling face. And I just started laughing.
It’s been a weird day …

Fuck You Batman V. Superman
SPOILERS ... I can’t say this enough ... SPOILERS!
Saying you like Batman V. Superman is the same thing as saying you are fine with a movie:
• That STARTS with a flashback of the Batman origin story once again. Did you know Bruce Wayne’s parents were murdered?
Speaking of!
• That has at least four flashback/dream sequences.
• Where midway through the first dream sequence, bats give Bruce Wayne the ability to fly (or float.)
• Where Jimmy Olsen is murdered at his first introduction.
• Where Wonder Woman/Diana is obviously in the house ... BUT IS NEVER FUCKING EXPLAINED. She’s just kicking around being mysterious and getting into parties without invitations and being rich and shit!
• Where they blow up the goddamned Capitol building, and it is never fucking mentioned again.
• Where Batman, in a dream sequence, kills people with a handgun.
• Where Batman, in a non dream sequence, kills people in various ways.
• Where Batman sees The Flash screaming absolute nonsense in a “Flash Of Two Worlds”-esque dream sequence. (Much of it had to do with separate comic storylines which is too inside baseball for a casual moviegoer. I picked up some of it, but really it was just another plot device for Batman to see the future.)
Come to think of it, Batman’s dreams fill the movie with foreshadowing for future movies. Does Bruce Wayne weirdly have a superpower to see the GODDAMN future? Does anyone in the Justice League? NO? Well then ...
• Where despite all the bullshit in the first half of the movie about Clark and Bruce having a fundamental difference in philosophy, only fight because Lex Luthor kidnaps Clark Kents goddamn mother.
• Where Doomsday (The guy who killed Superman) is created by mixing the blood from Lex Luthor and the Body Of General Zod - in an absolutely stupid and nonsense ritual.
• Where Lex Luthor has absolutely NO definite motivations for doing what he does in the film. We’re just supposed to take it on the chin that he is a bad guy.
• Where Lex Luthor is not frightening or imposing in the slightest. (Matter of fact, he seems uncannily close to Jim Carrey’s Nygma performance in Batman Forever.)
• That contains a scene where it takes way too long for Wonder Woman to scroll through an email with 4 short sentences and a picture.
• Where the Justice League is haphazardly introduced because Lex Luthor has small video clips of them on a server farm, and he has already given each of them their character defining symbols. (Because that’s what a bad guy does ... graphic design.)
Sidenote: Also ... if Lex Luthor had known about Wonder Woman, then why the fuck did he not give a shit about her being at his oh so fancy party?
• Where Batman and Superman decide to be friends because they realize their mom’s have the same name! “You’re mom’s named Martha? That’s my mom’s name! Maybe we should stop fighting now?! LES BEEE FRENNNZZZ.”
• Where they turn Batman V. Superman ACTUALLY into the “Death Of Superman” story from the comics but with the fight sequence from “The Dark Knight Returns” from the comics.
• Where Lex Luthor is bald because of a PRISON HAIR CUT!
• Where Superman Dies. And not because of the titular fight against Batman. But because of the shoehorned in storyline, of his fight against Doomsday.
Guys ... there are SOME things to like about this movie. For instance, Affleck played an admirable Bruce Wayne/Batman with what he was given. But lets not kid ourselves...
As a comics fan (and a BATMAN fan,) this was the worst comic book movie to come out since THE SPIRIT. It’s visually messy. The plot is Incoherent. Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have decided to treat their audience like they are stupid. Like just because other superhero movies are doing business, they can throw whatever slop at you - because they are arguably the most iconic characters in comics - and you are going to come at it like lambs to the slaughter. (Myself Included.)
I cannot lie, I won’t be fooled again. I refuse to have anything to do (ticket buying included) with any comic book entity that has Zack Snyder’s name attached in the future. The man made Watchmen boring. He made Superman (a bright spot of hope in the comics universe) as dark and brooding as Batman. They put the fate of the future of the Official DC Comics Cinematic Universe in the hands of the man who made SUCKER PUNCH for the love of god.
Now if you are a DC fan, and what I have just said upsets you ... and you want to call me out for being a Marvel whore ... and you wanted to defend this flaming garbage pile of a movie for every legitimate complaint I had above, please go back and reread my list. Don’t try to defend it immediately. Think about each of those points. Critically wonder WHY they happened. If at the end of that list, you aren’t angry (which you should be) ... more power to you. You have found something that truly brings you joy and your fandom cannot be deterred. I have respect for that. I also have respect for the people who don’t try to defend the movie and give me a simple “C’mon man, It’s Batman & Superman & Wonder Woman in a movie! What is there not to love?!” Because although I disagree ... for the sake of having these heroes onscreen ... the logic is sound.
BUT if you are a film fan, a comic fan, a Superman fan, a Wonder Woman fan or especially a BATMAN fan who desperately wanted just a good movie and a solid jumping off point for some of the best characters in the history of comics ... and you walked away feeling angry, let down and grossly offended ... you’re not alone.

Quick story for you guys.
Many years ago when I was working in and around the Atlanta area as a stand-up, I used to do shows with certain people over and over again. You kinda find your crowd or core group of friends when doing comedy and you stick with it. One of the people in my crew was Dulcé. It really didn’t have anything to do with her comedy at first. It was more we just kinda liked to poke fun at the same things, bitch about the same things and we were just kinda comfortable around each other.
One night, I was booked to headline (if that’s what you want to call it) at this restaurant gig that was run by my friend Tim. Place was called “Itza Taco” at the time. It was rough because it was a family Tex Mex place about an hour outside of Atlanta. So your material had to be limited. People were often talking because they were having dinner. And there was always a sports game on. It was hard. Paid well, if I recall. But hard. The show was myself, Joe Gallois and Dulcé Sloan. Joe opened. Then Dulcé. Then me.
Joe did well. Started off the show right. Wrestled with the noise in the room just how he should. Then there was Dulcé. And for some reason in the middle of her 10 minute set, someone from the audience gave an innocent heckle and well that was that. Dulcé has patience as a performer, but man there are some things she doesn’t put up with. After 10 minutes of people talking during her friend Joe’s set, she was ready to get loose. She didn’t just address the heckler, she hilariously dressed the audience member down. The crowd attached to her so quickly and refused to let go. Before you knew it ... at 10 minute set turned into a 20 minute set.
Normally, going over by 10 minutes is enough to infuriate anyone in comedy. As the “headliner,” for a good five minutes, I was that person. But then I started laughing. Crazy laughing. I couldn’t stop. 10 Minutes of what was supposed to be material turned into 20 minutes of some of the most brilliant crowd work I had seen since I started performing comedy. Families who were turned off initially, came back around. People who just wanted to eat their dinner, put their giant burritos down to stop and laugh. She. Worked. The. Room. And then very politely and very sweetly, she wrapped up. Thanked the audience and stepped off stage. And as she did you could plainly see the audience wanted more.
It was my turn next. I think I maybe got through half a joke before I realized, the audience didn’t want me. They wanted her. I absolutely could not follow her. It was impossible. She devoured the room. It was flat out impressive. I think I barely eeked out ten minutes and then shuffled offstage slightly embarrassed. The entire ride home we talked about how damn funny some of the stuff she said was.
Dulcé and I were good friends after that, and even after I left for NY ... whenever I came home, I saw her in one way or another. She’s gotten into Bridgetown, was a new face at Just For Laughs in Montreal, has been on scripted television since. BUT, Last night my friend Dulcé was on Conan O’ Brien. She absolutely smashed. I couldn’t be happier for her or prouder of her. The girl who blew the light to prove that heckling wouldn’t be tolerated, murdered in front of a live studio audience. And I’m pretty sure she’s just getting warmed up.
