Always appreciate a reference to one of my favorite short stories of all time, and in a writing post, no less.

I adore Coraline to pieces and now I feel upset I didn't go see it in theaters. I had no idea there were new scenes!

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it!

Figured it was fitting to post a gif of one of my favorite Christmas specials and favorite adaptations of A Christmas Carol! (Also today's my birthday as well, so that's fun.)

Who says I'm letting it define what the movie should have been or driving myself crazy with what-ifs?
The movie didn't use a concept I thought was more interesting. Since Disney didn't use that concept, I'm using it myself for my own separate move. Nothing wrong with that.
Me learning the original concept for Wish had Star as a Peter Pan/Genie-esque shapeshifter, he would be Asha's love interest, the king and queen would be a villainous couple, and that sounds a hundred times more interesting than what we actually got:

The fan community nickname "Gaslighters" sounds too sketchy for my taste, but dang it I love the look of this upcoming show! Feels like 9 meets Coraline, and as a fan of both I'm absolutely excited for this!

Remember every character has good and bad sides to them. Don't make them one-note. Even a villain who does monstrous things might see themselves as the hero of their own story. Lean into that.
Every individual person on this Earth has their own thoughts, dreams, and goals. Apply that to your characters as well. Make them well-rounded people.
I need everyone’s best character advice. STAT.

Writing Tip: Remember Characters Are What Matter
You can have the most imaginative world around. You can have pages and pages of detailed worldbuilding and the complex system and backstories that make up the world you created. But no matter what, people won't stay for the ride if your characters aren't compelling.
Make every character feel distinct and unique, so that if you take a line out of context you can easily envision which character is saying it. Make the relationship between your main cast the forefront. You can have a good backdrop, complex themes sprinkled throughout, and an intriguing premise, but it's really engagement with the characters that will drive your audience to stay.

This gives me vibes of "if the rabbits from Watership Down had armor".
Which honestly is something I could see happening in a more Medieval-stylized AU. Especially considering how militaristic Ephrapha was. Seems like the kind of thing Woundwort would do.

I’m currently finalizing the pilot for a show that heavily features the afterlife (mainly Purgatory, though there’s some Hell exploration in Season 2).
Also, I’m a huge fan of afterlife stories in general, so I’m all for that!
Someone was making a hell beard show about Beezle with him running a circus, the creator get alot of hate and had their project called a Hazbin/Helluva boss rip-off by crazy fans just for having a hell setting. It get so bad that the account of a popular cartoon (I think it was Cartoon Cave or something) had to make a pinned tweet stating something like “Just because two things have something similar doesn’t mean they’re coping or a rip off”.
I hope the market becomes so saturated with stories about Hell that we all get sick of it but before that happens, I hope a couple of them become more popular than Hazbin/Helluva.

Can’t get over how incredible this looks already! I adore dramatic camera pans like that in animation, and that plus the lighting really has me excited to see Welcome to Hell 2 in its full glory! Been a fan for a few years and I’m so happy to see more!
Tumblr media
so apparently I missed the 10-year anniversary of Welcome to Hell on June 5th??? Thinking about doing a "Happy Late Anniversary" stream with the voice actors, would you guys be into that? In the meantime, uhhh... here's a gif of a shot from the upcoming W2H2!

Writing Tip: Give Your Main Characters Character
People can create a lot of characters for a work. Some are minor background characters. Some are secondary. And when it comes to your major characters, you need to give them proper characterization. Make them people the viewers/readers will want to follow.
No, "pile on the angst of a tragic backstory" does not automatically make a character deep. Plus, if you're starting a work that shouldn't immediately get focus unless it's part of the main character's driving situation that got them into the story's events in the first place (a la Walter White in Breaking Bad). A character can be chipper and happy and still have depth.
When it comes to your main characters, give them distinct characteristics. Flaws, hobbies, something to distinguish themselves from the other characters and be their own person. If you have a character who's supposed to be part of the main cast, and the only thing you can say about them is "they're X's cool relative", or "they're Y's sad friend" with no proper defining characteristics of their own, then give them more qualities. They're your main crew and they should stand out. Bland characters very strongly risk a bland viewing/reading experience.
No one in real life is just defined by "they're X's friend/spouse/sibling/etc." Don't let your main characters be either.

Writing Tip: Worldbuilding
Creatives love to create stories, characters, and worlds for them to play around in. But a lot of times, people can get bogged down by worldbuilding. I get it, it can be fun. But when telling a story—whether it be a book, art, a TV show, a webcomic, etc—don't get too focused on worldbuilding that you lose sight of what matters to the story.
The heart and soul of a story should be the characters. They're the people who grow and change, who we follow and want to see where they go. Having a world for them to play in is great, but don't focus so much on peppering your world with fun facts that you forget to give your main characters actual consistent characterization.

Greetings!
Hey there everyone! You can call me Raven.
I'm a writer, screenwriter, artist, composer, lyricist, and someone who could go on essays talking about what I'm passionate about (for one reason or another) that sites like Twitter just don't allow for properly with their limited amount of characters.
I'll largely be posting about writing, art relating to my current projects, fandoms I'm in (indie animation, games, Disney, animation in general, horror-comedy stories, etc.), and anything else I happen to feel like talking about here.
Recently finished reading The Afterlife of Holly Chase, and currently reading The House in the Cerulean Sea.
Feel free to ask my anything!
Side note: the world needs more afterlife shows.
