Excuses

Maddie looked at her son, then at Mr. Lancer. Then at her son once again in shock. The parent-teacher meeting that was supposed to just be a simple 'how your child is doing in school' had developed into something more complicated than that.

“No more excuses, Mr. Fenton,” Lancer said, with the patience born only from years and years with dealing and caring for kids. “Your attendance in school is abysmal and your grades are dropping. All that after showing me you have the potential to ace everything. So why, why are you so... erratic? It pains me to see you fail.”

Danny cringed, shrunk into himself and looked away. “I...” he muttered, unsure. “I want to do better. I want to ace all these tests and be able to become an astronaut. You know... go up into space. Has always been my dream since I was little. But...” here he sighed and for a moment he looked older than he was. “But there is something more important than grades and dreams, and if it's not me taking the fall, someone else will have to. And... and I can't let that happen.”

Amy trailed behind him, dragging her feet along the pavement as they weaved through the crowds. His steps were jerky, awkward like a newborn deer. Like he was unsure of how to walk at a normal pace. She opened her mouth to apologize for the millionth time, but thought better of it. He would only end up dismissing her. Instead, she sighed, shoulders drooping.
