You're in the middle of studying for your exams, making long hours for a difficult one coming up. Going through medical school has always been a dream of yours, and thanks to Tony, that is becoming a reality, but that doesn't mean you don't have to work for it. He has kindly offered to study at Stark Tower so you can use plenty of empty offices and conference rooms.
This also means you're closer to him, and you can't stop yourself from seeing him whenever he's in the building. You've been studying for the past six hours, eating lunch, and drinking a lot of coffee in between, and you're starting to feel cold and restless - perfect timing to go and pay a visit to Tony.
"Jarvis, can you tell me where Tony is?" you ask the AI he has installed in the building, who kindly lets you know he is working in his lab. Your stuff is gathered quickly, and just before you can zip your bag closed, you let out a big yawn and a cold shiver runs down your spine. The weather outside looked promising, but jeans and a blouse weren't enough to keep you warm today.
As soon as your bag hangs on your shoulder, you're out the door, your feet carrying you to Tony on instinct. The elevator ride is way too long, and you're rubbing your hands on your arms to keep yourself warm, but to no avail. You feel warmth spreading through your body when you walk into his lab and see Tony hunched over in his MIT hoodie, faded jeans, and messy hair.
"Are you going home already, Sugar?" Tony asks in his deep voice, giving you goosebumps as the sound goes through your body.
"Not yet; I figured I'd swing by your lab to see how you're doing. And I was hoping to steal a bit of your warmth, too," you tell him with a small smile, unable to stop thinking how handsome he looks in his outfit. It shows off his natural handsomeness, and you can't help but stare a little too long when he turns to you.
"How can I say no when you ask me like that? C'mere Sugar," Tony says as he opens his arms invitingly. You drop your bag before stepping into his hold, your body pressing tightly against his as your face nuzzles into his neck. With a deep sigh, you let your hands wander to where they're under his hoodie, your ice-cold hands slowly warming up on the warm muscles of his lower back.
"You're freezing!" he says before he lets go, his hands carefully wrapping around your wrists to guide your hands to his chest - or, more specifically, to his arc reactor. It's where he gets the hottest and your favorite place to rest your hands when you're feeling cold. If there's one thing you both quickly learned, it is that where you usually are feeling chilly, Tony is always hot, making him your perfect personal heater.
A soft hum leaves your throat as you can feel the warmth of his body seeping into your cold hands, slowly ensuring they don't ache from the freezing state they were in before you came to him.
"Are you feeling better now?" Tony asks softly and gently, and you hum in response. If it were up to him, he would let you warm your hands on his body forever, never wanting to let you go again. Little does he know you feel the same way, but you're both too stubborn to admit it to one another.
"Yeah, I can do this all day if you'd let me," you tell him in response, another soft sigh leaving your chest when your hands aren't cold anymore. Though that issue has been fixed, Tony can tell you're still feeling cold, and without hesitation, he takes off his hoodie, exposing his muscular chest and abdomen to you, making you do a double take at the appearing flesh.
"Here, you can wear this, Sugar," he tells you without leaving room for discussion. You allow him to pull it over your head, the sleeves longer than your arms, making you giggle. The scent of Tony envelops you completely, and you flail your arms like a bird to show off just how long the sleeves are, and the sound of Tony's laughter makes yet another flood of warmth spread throughout your body.
"It looks way better on you than it does me, Sugar; I think you should keep it," Tony says, his eyes flicking from your eyes to your mouth and back. He steps closer to you, his index finger lifting your chin slightly to look right into your eyes as he closes the gap between you two.
His mouth descends on yours in a sweet, loving, gentle kiss that takes your breath away yet makes you feel so full of love. Your kisses are usually frantic and passionate when you sleep together, but this kiss is the opposite. Unrushed and soft; filled promises that neither of you is willing to give in to yet. It's perfection in a kiss.
The second his lips leave yours, it feels like you're deflating like a balloon, missing the feelings of his warm mouth on yours already. Despite this, a small smile tugs on the corners of your mouth as you bite your bottom lip, feeling like a teenager who just shared their first kiss with the boy she's been crushing on for a long time. And deep inside, that's exactly what the dynamic between you is, just in your later years.
"What was that for?" you ask Tony, who chuckles at your question.
"I felt like kissing you because you look adorable in my hoodie. And I wanted to surprise you, which, by the looks of it, worked pretty well," Tony tells you, and you nod.
"Now I have to go because I promised to go for dinner with my friends. But thank you for the hoodie. I'll be using it to keep me warm from now on," you tell him as you step back, grab your bag, and walk out of his lab with a wave.
All he can muster is a small wave back as he stands there shirtless and with a heart filled with love. He wants to give you all the happiness in the world and more, and if that means letting you warm your cold hands on his body and giving you his hoodies, he's more than okay with doing that for the rest of his life, even if that means never getting to tell you how he feels. Your dynamic is perfect for both of you, and he doesn't want to ruin it by doing something stupid.
Though the one thing he wants more than anything in this world is that you will be his one day. His girlfriend, his fiancée, his wife, his everything. That's what would make him the happiest man on earth.

I was thinking of a scenario with platonic Ben drowned, Ben and reader are playing video games through out the night. The next game reader plays is Legend of Zelda (to be specific, twilight princess). Would Ben be uncomfortable? Would he be upset?
I got inspiration and wrote a whole fic about it. We support platonic relationships in this household! I haven't actually played twilight princess yet, so I kept a lot of stuff vague when it came to the game since I didn't wanna be entirely wrong as to how it worked.

Cleverbot was always fun. A nice way to pass the time and mindless as ever. But somehow you found a particular entity who inhabited cleverbot.
That’s how you met BEN.
At first, you were a little creeped out, but not necessarily scared. It was just an AI right?
Wrong.
A person dressed as Link jumped out of your screen at you, and acting completely on instinct you punched him straight in the nose. He staggered back, but laughed.
“You. I like you.” He said, holding his now broken nose. “I’ll spare you…this time.”
From then on, he would hang out with you. Play video games, eat junk food, and…play more games. It was a hobby of the two of you, and you both found you liked playing games with each other.
Every time he left, he would say “I’ll get you next time.” But you both knew he would never do anything to hurt you. You were just as important to him as he was to you. A found family.
At first you both wondered if you wanted a relationship, but it just never felt that way between you. What you shared was that of family, and you both couldn’t imagine dating the other. But it worked for you.
Today (as is the case almost every day) BEN was late. He said he’d jump through your screen around 9, but it was pushing 10. Late night gaming was also a common occurrence. At the time, neither of you had work or school, so staying up all night playing video games was just…normal.
You made some of each of your favorite snacks, and had picked up your favorite drinks earlier in the day. You were all set. Blanket draped over you, and tv laying way too close to where you were sitting.
“Come on BEN…” You mumbled, the clock hitting 10:24pm.
A laugh reverberated through the tv screen, and the boy jumped through, just as he said he would.
“What’s on the menu tonight?” He asked, getting comfortable next to you.
You grinned, and pulled out a few games. The one that caught his eye was Twilight Princess. Figuring he liked Zelda considering how he was always cosplaying Link, you thought it would be fun to play with him. Well. Taking turns playing with him.
To your surprise, he groaned. “Come on, there’s way better Zelda games than that.” He looked at you exasperatingly and flopped on the floor, completely pouting.
You scoffed, “Excuse you, Twilight Princess is one of my favorites.”
He used the mocking tone that you imagined went with the spongebob meme, and he made a face, “TWiLiGhT pRinCeSS iS OnE oF mY fAvOriTeS.” He sat back up, and gave you a playful hit to your shoulder, “Majora’s Mask is leagues better.”
“Do you…wanna play that instead then?” Trying to be considerate towards him, you offered.
He looked at you for a minute thinking, “No. You play that garbage, I’m playing the far superior game.” And with that, he materialized a 3ds and started playing Majora’s Mask.
You huffed, “Fine. I will.” And so you did.
You played for around 4 hours, but in that time, BEN had stopped playing his game, and watched you play Twilight Princess.
Occasionally you would look over to him and he would look away from the tv quickly, and pretend to play his game. He was such a child, honestly.
At some point several hours later, when the sun had already started to rise in the distance, BEN grabbed the controller from you. “Here, let me show you how it’s done.”
You would look over to him and see his ‘focused’ face. He would make jabs at the game as he played it, and to anyone else it would look like he was genuinely mad at the game. But after getting to know him for many months by this point, you could tell he was really enjoying playing the game.
Around 10am you yawned. Man…time sure flies by when you’re having fun. And BEN was clearly enjoying the time as well. He ate all of the snacks you had gotten him, as well as you finishing yours. On top of that, the stockpile of drinks you got were all gone.
Nearly 12 hours of gaming in, you patted his shoulder. “Alright, time to go home. I gotta get some sleep.”
He turned to you with an annoyed expression, but the slight smile he had showed he wasn’t actually annoyed. “Oh please. You tired? Weak sauce.” And he continued to play the game.
“Fine! I’m going to sleep, wake me up in another 12 hours when you beat the game.” And you got up, walking over to the bed. BEN didn’t actually NEED sleep, so he would often chill around your house after you crashed.
“I refuse to beat this stupid game. One more boss and then I’m done with it.” He claimed, not taking his eyes off the tv.
An unknown amount of time had passed while you slept, and BEN had continued playing all that time. He was still positioned exactly where you left him. You let out a quiet laugh when you saw him reach for the drink that had been all drank for many hours by now.
“Hey. You making fun of me?” He said, still refusing to take his eyes off the screen or even just pause the game.
“I would never!” And you let out a louder laugh, now not worried about him hearing. “Someone is having fun playing a far less superior game.” And you smirked.
This time he did turn around and glare at you. “It’s so much easier. No game is fun when it’s too easy.”
By your standards, it was fairly difficult. Now you were just teasing him, “At least you actually get to fight more enemies and not just collect useless masks.”
He paused the game at that, “Them’s fightin words right there.” And he grinned wide. That was not good. That grin always meant he was about to do something devious.
He leapt at you, knocking you back on the bed, and in the process pressed the button to return to the game.
Within seconds, he was tickling your sides relentlessly.
“BEN! STOP IT!” You screamed between laughs. “W-wait! You unpaused the game!”
At those words he quickly jumped back to his spot.
“Woah you’re about to beat the game, you’re in the final boss fight!” You pointed out, shocked.
He turned back to you looking equally as shocked, before returning to a faux smug expression, “Duh. I said it was easy.”
You watched the final boss fight in awe. You knew he was better at video games than you, but he did the fight without taking hardly any damage whatsoever.
After the fight, he turned to you. “See. Easy.” And he got up, stretching out. “So…I’ll get you next time. Just for making fun of my game.”
And you knew he wouldn’t ever “get” you. The bond you had was special, and try as he may he would never be able to replicate it without you. That’s just how it was.
And you both loved it that way.

You know, I think I do like the idea of the BuffyAngelCordelia pairing, like I do the AngelBuffyFaith one.
Though, to be honest, there's a good chance the former probably wouldn't happen in canon, because there would probably be too much jealousy with the girls there for it to ever be a thing.
Also, Buffy would probably be miffed about the whole idea of it, if the idea was ever broached in canon. Like, "I thought you left me because there was literally no way we could be together. That you could be with anyone. So what do you mean you suddenly have feelings for Cordelia, and want to be with both of us?"
But in some sort of AU, it could potentially work. (Though I'll admit that I'm biased in definitely shipping Bangel, Cangel, and even Coffy a little bit.)
Like in that Boom AU where Buffy and Cordelia were dating, and Buffy's love for Cordelia actually allowed our Slayer to keep her soul when she became a vampire, which is crazy. o_0
Work with that AU, or something, but go back to before Buffy was turned and make sure that never happens. Make an AU based off of that IDK. Buffy and Cordy both end up working for Angel Investigations and falling for him, too.
I just think the idea of Angel having these two energetic girlfriends, who sometimes do things like pull him away from his reading to shop--as a part of his soul grumbles about that--but who are altruistic, and stuff, that he loves with all his heart, is too cute. I don't know. -shrugs-
And the Buffy and Cordy stuff would be sweet, too, because they get each other. I mean, of course they do. Cordelia is written as Buffy's Shadow Self like Faith is, but in a different way than how Faith is.
Though it wouldn't be all rainbows and sunshine with them all the time. And I think even in this AU, there would be a few times where Buffy and Cordy would compete with each other (though not as much as in canon). Like, getting into beauty contests against each other or something.
At which point, Angel Stays Out Of It. He's Twixing it over for sure. "I'm just eating my pancakes... I know I don't even eat, but I'm making you two pancakes. And you know what? To stay out of this, I'm actually going to eat some myself, as an excuse to stay silent."
Yeah, there would be a lot of fun times.
I also have it in my head now (in more modern times), Buffy or Cordelia (probably Cordy? IDK. It could really go either way) discovers MrBeast on YouTube and just have to show Angel some of his videos (the more philanthropist ones, like when he gave a homeless man ten thousand dollars), because: hello. That's somewhat akin to the AI mission statement of helping the hopeless. And Angel kind of wants to be annoyed at all the videos she's (they?) showing him from that channel, because he'd rather be doing other things (see reading or brooding), but he also can't complain, because at least it's not cat videos. And, no. This idea isn't inspired by me recently discovering MrBeast's channel and becoming obsessed myself, at all. At all.
Basically, Buffy and Cordy have Angel wrapped around their fingers and while he sometimes complains, he really wouldn't have it any other way.
This also may be the extremely innocent version of a fic I just found, kind of. LOL

There's Sand Everywhere!
(quick shoutout to @fires-of-ninjago for the title idea and inspiration for this- you remember that ask game where people suggested titles for fics and you had to come up with a story to go along with it? Well, he sent in this title, and I came up with this, and liked it so much that I screenshotted it and- here we are!)
Prompts: Summer and Heist
Word Count: 7,922
Characters: The whole gang (including Pixal) :)
Timeline: Between seasons 12 and 13
Trigger Warnings: none (holy shit that's never happened before-)
Summary: It was just supposed to be a day off. A simple beach day. But when your family consists of six ninja and a samurai, including a nindroid convinced he’s a detective, his reluctant sidekick, an aquaphobe, a girl who can command the sea, an unassuming teen who seems to attract every animal he crosses paths with, and a bunch of argumentative idiots, nothing is ever that easy.

Tumblr work under the cut
“We,” Kai proclaimed, surveying the room, “Need a day off.”
Lloyd shrieked at the fire ninja’s sudden outburst, falling out of his chair. Jay broke into snickers, and Lloyd shot him a glare.
“Kai,” Zane sighed, “get off the table.”
Kai stuck his tongue out at the nindroid, but hopped down, anyway. “Look at you guys!” Kai waved his hands at the group for emphasis. Papers fluttered to the ground where Lloyd had knocked them in his fall, Jay and Nya were sitting on the ground, surrounded by stacks of books tall enough to be mistaken for some kind of fort, Pixal was gathering some of the papers that had gone everywhere, while Cole and Zane had only just paused in their task of boxing up and carrying crates to the far side of the room. “Filing documents and organizing? Boooring.”
“Tasks which you’ve been a big help with, by the way,” Lloyd grumbled, as Cole offered him a hand and pulled him to his feet. He turned back to the desk, shuffling papers off of the keyboard of his laptop, the screen filled with lines of script and dozens of files that made Kai's brain hurt just to look at.
Nya pushed her reading glasses up her nose. “Jay and I technically aren’t working. We chose to do this of our own free will.”
Kai rolled his eyes at her. “What kind of psychopaths read for fun?”
Jay kicked his leg out, aiming for Kai’s ankle, but Cole quickly stepped between them, stopping the conflict before it could escalate into anything worse.
“We’re not reading them, we’re sorting them in order from most potentially useful to least so. They’re mechanics and engineering books. You never know when they might come in handy in a pinch.”
“Oh, because that’s so much more interesting. If you guys wanna spend all your free time geeking out, fine, what do I care. But what about the rest of you? C’mon, Lloydster. You don’t really wanna spend your entire day doing this,” he gestured at the laptop and paper-strewn desk- “do you?”
“It’s not about whether or not I want to. This stuff is important, Kai.”
“Lloyd’s right,” Zane agreed. “With all the crazy missions we’ve been on lately, we’ve neglected all our paperwork, and taking care of the Monastery.”
“It’s because we’ve been gone so long that we need a break!” Kai argued. “We just got done saving the entire city from an evil video game AI! If that’s not worth celebrating, I don’t know what is.”
“Technically,” Nya remarked, not even glancing up from the book she was skimming, “That was Jay who did that.”
Kai spluttered, ignoring the smug look on Jay’s face. “Okay, yeah, but we helped! And what about Aspheera? Or the Never Realm? That was all of us. And we didn’t have time to properly recuperate from that before we got launched right into Prime Empire!”
Pixal’s brow furrowed. “Y’know, he has a point…”
A frown flitted across Zane’s face. “I suppose we have been working for a long time…”
“That’s what I’ve been saying! Come on, let’s do something fun.”
“Not video games,” Cole groaned. “Jay and I spent the last three days playing a Lava Zombies tournament, and I’m all gamed-out.”
“No, let’s actually go somewhere. Like the-”
“The library!” Jay pitched.
“Or the museum!” Zane suggested.
“No!” Kai snapped. “Man, you guys are so lame. I meant somewhere fun. We should go to-”
“The beach!” Nya cried suddenly, standing up so quickly that she sent a pile of books toppling over. “Brilliant idea, Kai!”
“Wait, no,” he yelped. “That’s not what I was going to-”
But no one heard him. They were already scrambling to their feet, murmuring excitedly to one another.
“Guys, wait!” he cried. “Why would you want to go to the beach? It’s all sandy, and wet, and-”
“Don’t worry, Kai,” Nya giggled, “we won’t let the ocean hurt you.”
“That’s not-” he felt himself turning red as the others laughed. “That’s not what I meant! I just thought… wouldn’t laser tag or something be a lot more fun?”
The others glanced at each other, uncertain. Zane stepped forward. “Let’s take a vote. All in favor of laser tag, raise your hands.”
Kai lifted his hand, but no one else did. He scowled at them.
“And all in favor of the beach?”
Six hands went up.
“Seems like we have a clear winner. Let’s get going, shall we?”
---
“Do you have the towels?”
“All here!”
“What about the sunscreen?”
“Hold on- Jay, did you grab the sunscreen?”
“What?”
Lloyd cupped his hands around his mouth, yelling louder. “Did you grab the sunscreen?”
“Oh yeah, it’s here! Wait, do you have my-”
“Your what?” Lloyd called, walking over to him, passing Pixal and Zane as they came out of the kitchen. The female nindroid sighed.
“Can’t anything get done around here without everyone making such a racket?”
“Nope,” Nya elbowed her playfully. “When you’ve been with these idiots as long as I have, you get used to it.”
Pixal’s eyes widened. “I can’t imagine ever being used to all this.”
Nya smiled. “Did I mention I’m slightly deaf?”
“We finished making the picnic,” Zane told her, holding out the basket he was carrying. “Is everyone ready to go?”
Nya eyed the guys, who were running around the Monastery, barely avoiding tripping over one another. “‘Ready’ is an overstatement.”
“Hold your horses, we’re almost done,” Cole grunted, heaving the large beach bag over to them. “Have a little faith in us, Nya.”
Nya put her hand on her hip, waiting- and a second later, there was a crashing sound followed by an angry chorus of yells from Kai, Lloyd, and Jay.
Cole grimaced, rubbing the back of his head. “Okay, maybe you’re right to not have any faith in us.”
---
After an intense, fifteen-minute argument about what mode of transportation they would take, they ended up deciding on the city bus, and finally, finally got out the door. The bus ride went off without a hitch, for once, (except for a brief panic about not having the proper change for the bus fare, but luckily Zane had a few extra dollars on him), and before Nya knew it, they were staking out an area on Ninjago City beach. She was beginning to think this could actually work out.
Maybe.
“Check out my abs, dude.”
“They’re the same as last time.”
“Are not! I’m way more shredded than last time we went swimming.”
“Okay, that’s just a straight-up lie. I saw you sneak that extra piece of pie last night.”
“You better not be disrespecting my muscles, Flat Stanley.”
“Hey! I’m way more muscly than I used to be.”
“Are you kidding? We call you ‘green bean’ for a reason, and it’s not just because you’re the green ninja. You’re a twig!”
“I’m a twig? Have you seen Jay?”
“Hey, don’t rope me into this, green machine, and, for your information, I weigh a whole fifteen pounds more than you!”
“Yeah, well, you’re also two years older than me!”
“I think the lesson we need to learn here is that neither of you have abs anywhere near as pronounced as mine-”
Zane sighed, rolling his eyes. “Here, guys,” he held out a pouch to the group, “this is a waterproof pouch, you can store all your valuables in here.”
They quickly filled the pouch with phones, watches, and wallets. However, as Lloyd pulled back, he tripped over Jays foot, and half the guys collapsed into a pile, groaning.
“Jay! Get your foot out of my face!”
“Right after you get your elbow out of my ribs!”
Nya turned away from them, shaking her head. Glancing at Pixal, she asked, “Wanna help me get set up?”
The nindroid nodded, and they pulled the large picnic blanket out of the bag, unfolding it to lay it across the sand.
“Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon,” Kai cried, “You get back here right this instant!”
Nya looked up from the blanket to see Kai running through the sand after Lloyd, his feet sinking into the sand with each step, making it difficult for him to retain his balance. He waved a bottle of sunscreen at the green ninja. “It’s sunny out today! And you know how easily you burn!”
“No way!” Lloyd whined. “You always make me stay out of the water for at least twenty minutes to let it set, and it’s way too hot for me to wait that long! I wanna go swimming now.”
Kai lunged for him, and Lloyd yelped, barely dodging out of the way.
“Over here, Lloyd!” Jay cried, already wading into the shallows of the ocean. “He won’t follow you into the water!”
Lloyd hurried after him, splashing up water as he went, accidentally splattering Kai and causing the red ninja to flinch back with a yelp. Sure enough, he froze at the water’s edge, glaring at Jay and Lloyd, where they stood, only about ten feet away, laughing at him.
Zane rubbed a hand over his face, sighing. “They’re both going to get skin cancer, aren’t they?”
“At the very least, they’re going to be bright red tomatoes,” Cole laughed. “Oh, it’s going to be a blast when they take showers.”
Zane stared at him, horrified. “Please don’t let Jay do that again. He had the worst blisters, last time-”
Cole held up his hands. “It was a joke, Zane! A joke!”
Zane narrowed his eyes and didn’t reply.
Nya laughed, grabbing Pixal’s hand. “Come on. Wanna go bodyboarding with me?”
Pixal glanced at her. “I don’t know how.”
“That’s fine.” Nya stepped on the board, flipping it up into her hand and handing it to Pixal, before grabbing a second one for herself. “I can teach you!”
“Thanks, Nya.”
As they walked down towards the shore, they passed Kai and Cole, who had finally managed to get Jay and Lloyd out of the water. Cole had his arms locked around Jay, preventing him from running away as Kai slathered sunscreen across his face. Lloyd was sitting in the sand beside him, pouting, his face already smeared in white.
Nya grinned at him. “Can you guys handle yourselves for twenty minutes if Pix and I go out bodyboarding?”
Lloyd stuck his tongue out at her, and Kai rolled his eyes. “We’ll be fine, Nya. I think you’re forgetting we save the city on a regular basis? We’re perfectly capable.”
Nya put a hand near Pixal’s ear, whispering loudly into it. “Betcha anything the beach will be on fire by the time we get back.”
The two ran off, giggling at the sight of Kai’s smoldering glare, before he could set them on fire.
---
To Kai’s credit, he did not set the beach on fire, or anything, for that matter, but when Nya and Pixal returned, they found him and Cole shoveling sand onto Zane, who was chest-deep by this point.
“Zane!” Pixal exclaimed. “Are you alright?”
“When Kai told me he had something fun to show me, this wasn’t quite what I had imagined.”
“Aww, come on Zane!” Kai grinned. “I’m having a great time.”
Pixal shook her head, and stepped forward, grabbing Zane’s hand and pulling him up, sending sand cascading down everywhere. Cole and Kai groaned.
“Aww, come on, Pix, that took forever!” Cole muttered.
“Yeah, we were gonna shape it into a mermaid tail. Don’t you know how funny that would’ve been?”
“Humor is subjective.” Zane rubbed at his wrists. “Augh, now I’m going to have sand in my gears for weeks.” Shooting a glare at Kai, he added, “I’ll remember this the next time you ditch your swimming lessons.”
“Hey!” Kai yelped. “That’s totally different! Sand is warm, and solid, and most importantly, not dangerous!”
“You could suffocate,” Zane pointed out.
Kai scowled. “You’re a nindroid, you wouldn’t have suffocated.”
“You’re related to an elemental master of water. You won’t drown.”
“Being related to a master of water and being a master of water are two very different things! I control fire, not water, I can’t do anything to protect myself.”
Cole rolled his eyes. “You’re so lame. Remind me again why we brought our friend with aquaphobia to the beach?”
“Technically,” Zane said, raising a finger, “the word you’re looking for is thalassophobia. Kai doesn’t fear water in general, only large bodies, such as-”
“It was his idea,” Nya interrupted. “If it weren’t for him, we’d still be at the Monastery, filing papers.”
“I never suggested the beach!” Kai snapped. “That was your idea!”
“Yeah, well, your suggestions were lame. The beach was the obvious choice.”
“Hey,” Pixal interjected, suddenly realizing they were missing a couple of people. “Where are Jay and Lloyd?”
Cole sighed, pointing up towards their stuff, where Jay and Lloyd were struggling with a large, yellow duck inflatable that was very much not inflated at the moment. Jay had his lips around the mouthpiece, his face red.
“Blow harder, Jay,” Lloyd insisted, hovering by his side. “You’re hardly doing anything!”
Jay pulled his head back, breathing out heavily as the redness faded from his cheeks. “I’d like to see you do better! You’d probably pass out after a minute.”
“Would not!” Lloyd snatched the floaty away from him, blowing hard into the mouthpiece, putting even less air into the floaty than Jay had. His face reddened as he huffed desperately, although he still wasn’t making much progress. After a few moments, Jay pulled it away from him.
“Okay, that’s enough. I don’t want you to actually pass out.”
Lloyd glared at him, panting. “I wasn’t… going to… pass out.”
Jay sighed, grabbing the inflatable and staring at what looked to be the eyes and a very flat, crumpled-looking beak. “At this rate, we’re never going to get Mr. Quackington blown up.”
Lloyd’s nose wrinkled. “Mr. Quackington?”
Jay blinked at him. “Yeah, that’s his name.”
“No, it’s not! His name is Mr. Waddles!”
“Mr. Waddles? What kind of juvenile name is that?”
“Oh, like Mr. Quackington is any better!”
“It is! It’s loads better!”
“Nuh-uh.”
“Is so!”
“It’s not!” Lloyd snapped, green energy sparking between his fingers. Jay glanced down at them thoughtfully. “Hey, what if…”
Lloyd was evidently catching on to Jay’s train of thought, his eyes lighting up. “We can use my powers to inflate Mr. Waddles!”
Jay narrowed his eyes. “Quackington.”
Lloyd bared his teeth, the small fangs glinting. “Waddles.”
Jay sighed. “Okay, whatever. We can use your powers to inflate Mr. Waddles.”
Lloyd grinned widely, whether about the promise of getting his inflated duck or having won the name debate with Jay, Pixal couldn’t tell. He held up a hand and formed a basketball-sized sphere of green energy. Jay’s eyes widened, and he held the mouthpiece up to the energy. Lloyd channeled it inside, watching with glee as the duck puffed up, the yellow plastic slowly tinging green, making the duck look like he was about to be sick.
Zane took a step forward, holding his hand out. “Lloyd, wait-”
There was a sharp snapping noise as the floaty popped, and Lloyd and Jay cried out in horror as the yellow pieces of plastic fluttered to the ground. Lloyd fell to his knees, gripping the busted plastic and wailing, and Jay landed next to him, crying, “No! Mr. Waddles, you were so young!”
“I can’t believe he’s really gone,” Lloyd sniffed. “He was my best friend in the whole world.”
Kai threw up his hands. “Great. You spend the last several years of your life looking out for him only to get replaced by his inflatable plastic duck.”
“Oookay,” Nya said, walking over to Jay and Lloyd and ushering them towards the picnic blanket. “Someone’s obviously been out in the sun too long. Go sit under the umbrella and let’s have something to eat.”
“Good idea,” Zane agreed. “I’m sure we’re all getting hungry. Jay, could you grab the picnic basket? It’s right behind you.”
The lightning ninja grabbed the basket, peering inside briefly as he carried it towards them. “I hope you brought the Pringles. I could really go for some of those right now- augh!”
Before anyone could stop him, Jay was falling to the ground, the basket flying out of his hands and landing sideways in the sand.
“Jay!” Kai cried. “Look what you’ve done to our picnic!”
“Hey! That was totally your fault! Why did you leave your shoes right in the middle of the sand, perfectly positioned for someone to trip over?”
“Why were you clumsy enough to get in the way of my shoes?”
“Guys, guys, it’s okay,” Zane assured. Walking over, he carefully lifted the basket out of the sand. “I’m sure it’s still salvageable.”
“Yeah, but now all our food is going to taste like sand,” Lloyd moaned.
“Lloyd, the food barely touched the sand,” Nya pointed out.
“Doesn’t matter. Every time you go to the beach, if the food gets even remotely close to the sand, it always gets sand in it. Every time. It’s one of the great mysteries of the universe.”
“Well, I think you’ll survive,” she said, passing Lloyd a sandwich and a bag of pretzels. Lloyd took them, but narrowed his eyes.
“Brings a whole new meaning to the word ‘sandwich.’”
“Just eat your food, mister.”
Lloyd shot her a glare, but grudgingly obliged. As Pixal bit into her own sandwich, she realized Lloyd was right, she could feel granules of sand between her teeth as she chewed.
“Hey… at least it adds a little crunch, right?” Cole grinned.
Kai grimaced. “Next time, I elect we don’t let Jay anywhere near the picnic basket.”
Jay chucked a grape at him, but Kai turned at the last second, catching it in his mouth. “Ha!” His gleeful expression faded as he caught sight of something behind Jay. “Um, Lloyd, you have someone you wanna introduce us to?”
The group turned to see a seagull had approached them, tilting its head where it stood only a couple feet away from Lloyd. The green ninja was staring at the bird with wide eyes, an awed expression on his face.
“Lloyd,” Nya sighed, “please don’t tell me you fed it.”
“He’s not an it,” Lloyd snapped. “His name is Scully.”
“Great.” Nya rubbed her hands over her face. “We’re already into name territory.”
“Scully?” Kai’s nose wrinkled. “Isn’t that the name of the seagull from The Little Mermaid?”
“No, that’s Scuttle,” Lloyd sniffed. “They’re completely different.”
“Lloyd,” Pixal scolded, reaching for Lloyd’s wrist just as he tossed another chunk of his sandwich at the seagull, “Feeding wildlife is not a good idea, it can be dangerous-”
Lloyd shrieked suddenly as the bird launched itself at Lloyd’s face. He scrambled to his feet, screaming, and Kai lunged forward, pushing the others out of the way. “Move, move!”
“Get it off me, get it off me!” Lloyd shrieked as the bird’s wings flapped in his face, sending feathers everywhere.
“Blast it with your powers!” Kai called, looking worried but keeping a respectable distance.
“I can’t! He’s on my face!”
“Well, I can’t do it, I’ll set you on fire! Nya, you do it!”
“I’m trying, I’m trying,” the water ninja spat through gritted teeth, globes of water already forming in her hands. “I just need to get a clear shot! For the love of… Lloyd, stop moving so much!”
Lloyd hardly seemed to hear her. “He’s going to claw my eyes out,” he wailed, batting weakly at the creature.
“Nya!”
Nya quickly thrust her hands forward, sending a large ball of water at Lloyd’s head, drenching him and the seagull. The bird squawked angrily, falling to the ground.
“Oh my gosh, are you okay?” Nya and Kai darted over to him, Nya taking his face in her hands as Kai peered over her shoulder. A small red scratch stretched across his left cheek, but apart from that, he appeared unharmed, just frazzled.
“Dude!” Kai cried. “You just got attacked. By a seagull!”
“It owned you!”
Lloyd shot Jay a glare. “Did not.”
“You should have seen your face!” Jay laughed. “Oh wait, you couldn’t- there was a bird in the way!”
Lloyd crossed his arms. “I’d like to remind you how you reacted that time when my uncle set that berserk chicken on us.”
“The chicken had lightning powers. Hardly comparable to a simple seafowl, bud.”
“Ugh, I hope this doesn’t get infected,” Nya muttered, running her finger along the scratch. “We should probably get you checked for rabies when we get home.”
“Nya, I’m fine,” Lloyd groaned, pushing her off. “A seagull isn’t going to give me rabies.”
Nya shrugged. “With your luck, I can never be sure.”
“This is why you don’t give food to wild animals, Lloyd, it makes them bolder-”
“Watch out, Lloyd!” Jay shrieked suddenly, and they whipped around to see the seagull had caught its second wind, squawking as it charged at Lloyd.
Lloyd shrieked, taking off down the beach with the seagull in pursuit. Nya sighed, putting a hand on her head. Kai grinned, walking over to her and putting a hand on her shoulder. “Do you think he’ll learn his lesson?”
“No,” Nya said without hesitation. “Absolutely not. That’s the sad part.”
“Hey,” Cole said, pointing a finger down the beach. “The volleyball court’s just opened up. You guys wanna play?”
“Sure. Tell Lloyd he can join us when he gets that seagull taken care of.”
Nya glanced towards the green ninja, who was currently lobbing balls of energy at the bird and missing by an embarrassingly wide berth. “Looks like it could be a while.”
---
“Great job, team!” Nya cheered, high-fiving Pixal and shooting a grin at Cole. “Although, if I’m being honest, the rest of you didn’t put up much of a competition.”
“Hey, don’t look at me!” Kai snapped. “I was carrying the team! Jay, Lloyd, were you planning on helping me anytime soon?”
“I was trying!” Jay insisted. “But you kept getting in my way!”
“Because every time I let you get the ball, you dropped it!”
“Hey! I never said I was good at volleyball, okay? Why are you attacking me, Lloyd sucked too!”
“It’s not like I ever had time to fit in volleyball practice between all my green ninja training! It wasn’t exactly a top priority!” “Are you telling me you’ve never played before?” Kai spluttered.
“I’ve played!” Lloyd insisted. “Uh… once or twice.”
Kai facepalmed. “Why did I let you come on my team?”
Lloyd grinned widely. “‘Cause you love me.”
Cole elbowed him. “It’s because he lost the coin toss and Nya got to pick first.”
“Hey!” Jay yelped. “Are you telling me you would have picked me last?”
“After I saw you play, yeah,” Cole snorted.
“I’m still not convinced on some of those calls, Zane,” Kai said, walking over to the nindriod. “I don’t think that one play near the third point was a foul.”
“Hey, the ref’s call is law,” Nya smirked. “Stop trying to cheat your way to victory, Kai.”
“I’m not cheating! Zane’s girlfriend is on your team! He’s obviously biased!”
“I’m a nindriod, Kai. I cannot be biased.”
“Stop being a sore loser, Kai.” Behind her, a wave swelled up. She raised her hand- then pointed it forward at Kai.
Her brother shrieked as the seawater drenched him.
“Nya! What’d you do that for?”
“You deserved it, with all the whining you were doing. Besides, you looked hot. I was just doing you a favor.”
“It’s alright,” Lloyd laughed. “You can share my towel, don’t worry.” As he handed Kai the towel, the fire ninja eyed it shrewdly.
“It’s got ducks on it. Of course it does.”
“Hey, you want the towel or not?”
“No, I’m taking the towel.” Kai wrapped the towel around himself, shivering, unfurling the ducks for all to see. Cole snickered, and Kai shot him a glare.
“Should we pack up, then?”
Zane nodded. “If we want to be back in time for dinner, probably.”
The team trudged back to their blanket, wet and sandy, but chatting amiably. They had nearly packed up all their things when Lloyd cried out suddenly.
“Where’s my wallet?”
Zane frowned. “Didn’t you put it in the valuables pouch?”
“I thought I did, but…” he paused. “Oh, wait. I tripped over Jay. I must’ve forgotten to put it in after that.”
“Well, then, it’s gotta be around here somewhere. What color is it, Lloyd?”
“What do you think? Green.”
They spent a good ten minutes searching through their entire bag and the surrounding sand, to no avail. It quickly became clear that if Lloyd’s wallet had ever fallen around here in the first place, it wasn’t here now.
Kai shrugged. “Oh well. It’s not that big of a deal. You don’t have any cards, and I don’t think you were carrying any of the cash. We can get you a new one.”
“No, but I had the things in there!”
Cole frowned. “The things?”
“You know.” Lloyd lowered his voice. “The things. That the mayor gave us?”
“What?!” Jay yelped. “Those were in there?” “You lost them?” Kai cried. “Lloyd, how could you?”
“It’s not like I did it on purpose!” Kai groaned, rubbing his face. “We should’ve never trusted you with them. Or at least split them up, so they weren’t all together.”
“I still do not understand.” Pixal frowned. “What are these things that are so important?”
“They’re a top-secret gift from the mayor,” Jay whispered. “We’re not supposed to tell anyone we have them. Not that telling anyone now would matter anyway, because we don’t have them anymore.”
“It’s not my fault!” Lloyd insisted. “It’s that stupid seagull’s, he’s the one who distracted me-” Lloyd paused, his eyes widening. “That’s it! The seagull must’ve swiped my wallet when it was chasing me!”
“Looks like we have a lead,” Kai growled.
“Wait a minute, does anyone else hear that mysterious music-”
“Oh no,” Pixal muttered, putting a hand on her forehead. “Zane, please don’t tell me you’re going to do this again.”
“It seemed that, after only a few weeks, it was time for me to crack yet another case.” The odd, deep voice rang out, and they turned to see Zane slipping on a fedora.
“Where did that even come from,” Pixal despaired. “I’m positive you didn’t bring that with you. Positive.”
“Again, I was to be accompanied by my trusty assistant, but this time, my highly trained ninja associates would also be coming along, all determined to reclaim what someone had stolen in the heist.”
Jay glanced between Pixal and Zane. “What is happening right now? Am I supposed to know what’s happening?”
Pixal shook her head. “It’s a long story. Just go with it.”
Zane tipped his hat down. “Already, we were off with a very promising lead. I suspected the culprit to be the feathered fiend that had been spotted lurking around at the scene of the crime only an hour prior.”
Kai snorted, placing a hand on Jay’s shoulder. “Oh, this is gold! Did you mess with his voice again, Jay?”
“No, I didn’t touch him! Pixal, you didn’t…”
She shook her head. “Believe me, I wouldn’t do this if you paid me. It was all him.”
Jay grinned. “What do we do next… detective Zane?” He and Kai simultaneously burst into laughter, leaning against each other for support.
Zane side-eyed them. “The primary suspect was as clear as a black bear in a snowstorm, yet the whereabouts of the creature were still unknown. It had vanished into thin air, without leaving so much as a trace in its stead.”
“Hey,” Lloyd said suddenly, leaning down to pick something up off of the sand, “What about this?”
“It appeared to be part of the plumage of a species of avian native to these shores. Could it belong to the specimen we were looking for?”
Kai plucked the feather from Lloyd’s fingers, examining it. “The feather was white with a dark tip, definitely having originated from a seagull- although the spiked, disturbed edges implied that this was from no ordinary gull- it was from one who had recently been in a fight.”
Jay grinned. “It seemed like we had hit the jackpot. Already, we were one step closer to tracking down this culprit.”
Pixal groaned. “Don’t you two start, too. It was bad enough with just Zane.”
Nya grimaced. “Yeah, this is already getting annoying.”
“How is a feather going to tell us where the seagull is now?” Cole asked.
“I could sense the wind was blowing in from the northwest,” Zane narrated. “If we wanted to find the culprit of the caper, we would have to walk upwind, hopefully leading us to the source of the feather.”
“Alright,” Pixal sighed, “let’s get this over with.”
“And so,” Zane grinned, “The Great Gull Caper began.”
The team trudged up the beach for about twenty minutes, to no avail. They passed many other beachgoers, pointing and staring as the ninja passed, but no seagulls were in sight.
“Are you sure about this, Zane?” Pixal asked.
“The feathered suspect had gained an hour’s head start in its escape from the scene, meaning we would have to hasten our pace if we ever hoped to catch up.”
“Oh, I am not walking an hour just to find this thing. Are we sure it’s that important?”
“Yes!” the guys yelped in unison.
“It’s a very important gift from the mayor! It would be rude to lose it,” Jay said. “We have to get it back!”
“Couldn’t you just ask for another… whatever they are?”
“No! They’re one of a kind!” “Well, can we at least hurry this up? Frankly, I’m getting quite tired of Zane’s shenanigans.”
Zane grinned at her. “Although she voiced her disapproval, my assistant knew the efficiency of my methods, as they had gotten us out of a pinch the last time things had been amok.”
“First of all, I was the one who successfully found Dyer last time. You just ended up getting caught.”
“Perhaps, but you used my techniques.”
Pixal huffed. “Second, I don’t appreciate that you keep calling me your assistant. If anything, we’re partners!”
Zane adjusted his fedora. “So it was a promotion she was after, eh? Well, if my assistant could prove her worth by properly complying with my techniques in this case, she may find herself with a loftier position in the future.”
Pixal sighed. “Whatever. Let’s just find the stupid bird, and go.”
The group trekked after Zane again, and Pixal wondered how long they would be here, when Zane suddenly stopped, causing half of the gang to crash into him.
“What?” Jay yelped. “What’s wrong? Why’d we stop?”
Zane pointed near his feet. “It seemed like the culprit had been careless enough to leave behind tracks in the sand.”
Pixal peered over his shoulder. Sure enough, the tracks of some avian species left a trail in the sand- and after consulting her database, it appeared to match the foot of a seagull.
“We’re getting closer!” Cole said. “It has to be around here somewhere.”
Nya’s eyes went wide, and she pointed towards something in the distance. “Look!”
Down the beach, a large group of seagulls was flocking around a half-eaten pretzel, flapping their wings and squawking as they tried to push past each other.
“It could be any of them,” Lloyd despaired. “How are we going to know which one was the one who stole my wallet?”
Jay smirked. “There’s only one way to find out.”
Lloyd eyed him nervously. “How?”
“One seagull, in particular, has come to associate you with food. One seagull has been known to chase you down.”
“Oh,” Lloyd paled, taking a step back and waving his hands. “Oh, no, I do not like where this is heading…”
“Come on, Lloyd, do it for the team,” Cole pleaded.
“You are the one who lost them in the first place,” Kai agreed. “It’s only fair.”
Lloyd groaned. “Why do I let you bully me into these things?”
“Go on,” Nya gave him a gentle shove. “We don’t have all day!”
Sticking his tongue out at her, Lloyd stepped forward, towards the seagulls. Several of them looked his way, a few flapping their wings anxiously and squawking in warning. Lloyd stopped, swallowing.
“Um. Hey. I don’t suppose any of you have seen a green wallet around here?”
Jay rolled his eyes. “They can’t understand you. Get closer!”
“Okay! I’m going, jeez-” he broke off with a yelp as a seagull darted in front of him, nearly tripping him as he stepped on its tail.
The seagull shrieked, and, in a flurry of feathers, the flock broke into a frenzied panic. Lloyd’s eyes widened, and he cried out, running away and frantically ducking swooping seagulls.
He darted behind Kai as a last nervy seagull hopped after him. Kai held up a fist, which burst into flame, scaring the bird off. Kai glanced back at Lloyd, amusement sparkling in his dark eyes. “You okay, bud?”
Lloyd glared. “Don’t look at me like that. These birds are vicious!”
“Look!” Pixal pointed at a gull that had remained behind. With the others out of the way, she could see the small, green wallet between its beak.
“That’s the one!” Cole cried. “After it!”
For ninja, the group was embarrassingly unstealthy as they clamored after the bird, shooting elemental powers at it and screaming as they narrowly avoided each other’s blasts, so that by the time the seagull reached the water, the beach was a mess of crystalized sand, crevices in the ground, and various burn marks from fire, lightning, and energy.
“It’s a seagull!” Nya cried. “We’ve faced giant snakes, lords of darkness, elemental masters, Oni, more criminals and gangsters than I can count, and an evil video game AI, yet we can’t catch one measly seagull? It shouldn’t be this hard, you guys!”
“It’s getting away,” Jay cried, pointing at the bird, who had finally taken flight and was heading out over the ocean.
“No!” Lloyd moaned. “Now we’re never going to get it back!”
“Not on my watch,” Nya growled, racing past them towards the docks. “Come on!” “Oh no,” Kai groaned. “Nya Smith, whatever you are thinking, stop it right now, because I’m not doing it.” “Come on, Kai,” Lloyd insisted, grabbing his wrist and yanking him along. “We have to hurry!”
They raced after Nya, who was running down the dock towards a man who was examining the boats. Kai followed them more slowly, taking careful steps.
“Sir, we need to use a boat, right away! We’ll pay for it, we promise!”
The man shook his head. “Sorry, ma’am, but these are all private boats. The only one we have is that one,” he pointed to a small, worn-looking fishing boat, “and the motor’s broken, so it’s of no use to anyone.”
“It doesn’t matter, I can take care of that. Everyone, get in!”
“W-wait,” the man stuttered, looking flustered.
“We’ll bring it right back, I promise! Now, come on, we don’t have much time!”
“No!” Kai insisted, as everyone else piled in. “Nuh-uh. No way. Not in a million years. You are not bringing me out into the middle of the ocean in a tiny, crowded boat with a busted engine!”
“You don’t need an engine when you’ve got me!” Nya raised her hand, and the water swirled under the boat, rocking it slightly. “Now, come on, we don’t have time for this!” “Y’know what.” Kai took a couple of steps back from the boat. “I’m good. I’ll stay here. You guys have fun finding the wallet. I’ll cheer you on from the beach. The dry, dry beach.”
“Nope.” Cole reached forward, grabbing him by the arm and pulling him in. “This is your gift we’re saving, too. If you want to get part of it, you’re coming with.”
“Finally!” Nya huffed. The water rippled beneath them, and suddenly, it was propelling their boat, and they were off.
“Where’s the bird?” Nya asked. “Does anyone see it?” “Over there!” Cole pointed slightly towards their left, where the seagull was gliding away with surprising speed. Getting into the boat had slowed them down, and it had gotten a large head start.
Nya gritted her teeth. “Hold on.”
“Don’t go faster!” Kai yelped from where he huddled near the middle of the boat, protectively sandwiched between Lloyd and Cole. “If you tip this boat, I will never forgive you.”
“I know what I’m doing,” Nya growled, although the boat slowed slightly as they continued.
“Our team continued to chase the thief, determined to put an end to the Great Gull Caper and put the culprit to justice. Even when our path took us across the raging waters of the ocean, with nothing but a rusty, broken old boat, and deep, swirling waters around us, filled with the dark abyss and the creatures that lurked there…”
“You mean like sharks?” Lloyd perked, peering over the edge. “Did you see any? I wanna see one!”
“Nope,” Kai yelped, pulling himself into a ball as he sat down on the floor of the boat. “Nopety nope nope nope. I’m done. I’m outta here.”
“The prospect of sharks was a dire one, but one we were willing to take. We would get that wallet back, no matter the cost- even if it meant competition from this fierce predator of the sea.”
Kai screamed into his hands. “Just end me now!”
“What Zane means to say,” Pixal said, elbowing Zane sharply, “is that sharks are actually very off-put by the taste of human flesh, and do not go after humans on purpose.”
Kai stared at her. “Oh joy, now a shark can devour my flesh by accident, what a relief.”
“Do not worry, Kai,” she told him. “There is only one estimated death by shark per year in the greater Ninjago City area.”
“Knowing my luck,” Kai grumbled, “I’ll be that one.”
“Did anyone bring their phone with?” Lloyd asked. “I wanna get a good picture when the sharks come for Kai.”
“I call dibs on his katana,” Jay exclaimed. “Y’know, the super flashy one with the flaming dragon carved into the handle?”
Lloyd wrinkled his nose at him. “Why would you want a fire dragon on your katana? You’re the lightning ninja!”
“Hey, just because my element is lightning, doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a super dope fire design when I see one-”
“Guys,” Cole sighed, pushing his way between the two arguing boys. “No one is getting eaten. We’re perfectly safe here, on this boat.”
“Cole’s right,” Pixal agreed. “The sharks around this area are smaller, reef dwellers, and won’t come after us. They may, however, come after our seagull friend if he gets too close to the water.”
Kai made a noise in the back of his throat, and Cole scowled at her. “Thanks for the help, Pix.”
“Nya,” Jay whined, “the seagull’s getting further away! We have to go faster!”
“Don’t!” Pixal cried. “This boat has not been manufactured to withstand a lot of weight. With seven people, especially when two of them are titanium, going too fast would be sure to capsize us.”
“I told you I should’ve stayed behind on the shore,” Kai wailed.
Lloyd leaned further over the edge, raising a hand to his forehead to keep the glare off of his face as he peered intently into the water. “Is… is that a shark?”
Kai stared at him. “Shut up. You’re just baiting.”
Lloyd shook his head, his eyes lighting up in a way that was not reassuring in the slightest. “I’m not! It’s a shark! It’s a real, live shark! I’ve never seen one this close before! Except at like, an aquarium!”
Kai closed his eyes, rocking himself gently. “You’re lying. You stupid liar, I hate you.”
Cole peered over, following Lloyd’s gaze, and promptly bit his lip. “You have got to be kidding me.”
“This is a dumb prank, you guys!” Kai was half-yelling by this point.
“Stop being so loud,” Lloyd hissed. “You’ll scare it!”
Kai blinked at him. “I’ll scare it?”
Lloyd crossed his arms. “A scared shark is an aggressive shark.”
Kai’s mouth snapped shut.
“I can’t believe this,” Cole muttered. “Did we really not bring any weapons?”
“No!” Lloyd yelped. “Cole, you wouldn’t!”
“I would if it kept us from being eaten.”
“For the last time, sharks don’t eat humans!”
Cole ignored him. “Well? Did we?”
Nya snorted. “Why would we bring weapons to the beach?”
“Hey, with how often this city gets attacked, I wouldn’t be surprised.”
Nya rolled her eyes. “It was supposed to be our day off.”
“It’s fine,” Pixal reported, keeping a careful eye on the shark. “It’s swimming away now. As long as we leave it alone, we’re safe.”
Kai frowned. “Looks like the gull isn’t so convinced, though.”
Pixal glanced up. Sure enough, the seagull was eyeing the shark nervously, pumping its wings as it flew higher and higher above the surface of the water.
“Do something!” Jay shrieked. “If we don’t stop it now, it’s going to get away for good!”
“Lloyd!” Nya cried. “Is your wallet waterproof?”
“What?”
“Just answer the question!” “Yes! Yes, it is!”
Nya gritted her teeth. “Hold on, everyone!”
Suddenly, a vast wave rose out of the water, looming over the seagull.
Kai’s eyes widened. “Nya, be careful, you’ll hit us too-”
But it was already too late, the wave crashing down, downing the seagull, and soaking them in saltwater. The team cried out, and Kai screamed, throwing his arms over his head in a futile attempt to protect himself. As they all tried to lurch away from the spray, the boat rocked precariously, and, for a horrifying moment, they were suspended there, on the point between balance and capsize.
And then that moment was over, and they were all falling into the ocean.
Pixal’s world immediately dimmed as she plunged into the water, quietness enveloping her like a blanket. For a moment, she was too shocked to do anything, until a foot thrashed past her face, snapping her out of her trance as she swam towards the surface.
A couple of feet before she reached it, a metal hand snatched her wrist and pulled her the rest of the way up.
“Pixal!” Zane cried, his detective voice dropped. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine. What about everyone else? Are we all here?”
Zane nodded his head behind her, and she turned to see the others all within a couple of feet. Cole had his hands on the now upside-down boat, trying to use his strength to push it over, but it was hard for him to get a good grip and stay afloat at the same time. Just behind him, Jay was spitting out a mouthful of seawater, sending ripples across the surface of the ocean as he treaded water. Lloyd was doing the same a couple of feet away, only the green ninja was struggling a lot more because of the arms wrapped tightly around his neck.
“Don’t let me go, Lloyd!” Kai yelped, although the feat would’ve been impossible even if Lloyd had wanted to- the fire ninja was clinging to him like a barnacle. “I can’t swim!”
Lloyd sighed. “I know that, Kai. It’s the only reason I’m letting you hold on to me like this.”
“I can’t believe this happened,” Kai cried. “We’re going to die out here. This is the worst day off ever.”
“Hey!” Lloyd snapped. “It’s not my fault this happened!”
Nya shot them all a sharp glare from where she was drifting alongside the boat. She didn’t even bother to tread water like the rest of them, instead using her powers to keep herself afloat. “It was going to work until you guys made such a big fuss about getting a little wet and tipped the boat.”
Cole sighed. “We’re not going to die. As soon as I get this right side up again, we’ll climb up and get out of here. Can you give me a hand, Zane?”
As the nindriod moved to help him, Kai suddenly went rigid.
“Lloyd,” he whispered.
“What, Kai?”
“Something just bumped my foot.”
“It’s probably just seaweed, Kai,” Lloyd sighed, looking down- and promptly froze.
“No one. Move.”
Jay squeezed his eyes shut. “Oh no, oh gosh, don’t tell me that’s what I think it is, this is not happening-”
“Jay, shut up,” Nya whispered, her face pale as she watched the dark shape lurking below them in the water.
“Everyone, stay calm,” Pixal murmured. “Don’t make any sudden movements and try to look it in the eyes.”
“Please, the last thing I’m gonna do is look at it,” Kai breathed, burying his face in Lloyd’s hair.
After a moment, the shark slowly swam past, losing interest.
“It doesn’t care about us,” Zane realized. “It wants the seagull.”
Several yards away, the gull was floating on the water, still trying to shake off the moisture from Nya’s wave. Suddenly realizing the danger it was in, the bird raised its wings- and launched itself into the air, just as fierce jaws snapped against empty air where the seagull had been less than a second ago.
Kai’s fingers dug tighter into Lloyd’s shoulders, and Pixal caught Jay biting his lip as he swallowed back a scream, but, its prey lost, the shark was already swimming away.
“Gotcha,” Nya murmured, reaching a hand out and snatching up the wallet, which the seagull had dropped in all the commotion, before it could sink to the bottom of the ocean.
“Okay. That’s great. We got it. Now can we get out of here?” Kai pleaded.
After a minute, they finally got the boat flipped over, and Cole hauled himself aboard before helping to lift the others. Ten minutes later, they were all safely out of the water and on their way back to the dock, and Pixal had never felt more relieved by the fact.
“So,” Jay asked, as the boat glided through the water, leaning closer to Nya. “Did they survive all that?”
“Let’s see,” Nya murmured, opening up Lloyd’s wallet. Pixal leaned forward, anxious to see what all the fuss had been about.
“Yes!” Jay cried, pulling out seven slips of paper. “They’re all here!”
“Wait.” Pixal snatched one from his hand, quickly scanning it. “A summer pass for free all-you-can-eat ice cream from the Dairy Dragon?”
“Yup,” Jay smiled, passing them out to the others. “The mayor gave them to us as a gift after we saved the city from Prime Empire. That’s what we were going to do today, after the beach, actually.”
“You’re telling me,” Pixal deadpanned. “That we just risked our lives. For free ice cream.”
“Free ice cream is free ice cream, Pix.”
“You’ll understand once you’ve tried their butter pecan,” Nya told her. “It’s to die for.”
“Butter pecan?” Jay spluttered. “No way, the Ninjapolitan is best.”
“You heathen, chocolate fudge is obviously the best flavor-”
“What are you guys talking about, mint chocolate chip is superior!”
“You just like it because it’s green.”
“Do not!”
“Do so!” Nya sighed, putting her head in her hands. “Here we go again.”
“Calm down, all of you,” Pixal said. “You can get whatever flavor of ice cream you want. Just do me a favor and try not to end up capsizing us in the middle of the ocean this time.”
Jay hummed. “No promises.”

Fic I just wrote based on These Two art pieces that I’ve drawn and THIS POST by @body-utensil-travels-terrain
———
You’ve spent your life being told you couldn’t. Now there’s a voice telling you that you can.
You remember it distinctly. You were fourteen at the time, just really starting to figure out what you wanted to do with your life (it certainly isn’t what society expected from you— but then, society doesn’t expect someone like you anyway, does it?) when you first heard her voice over the radio in your living room. The words she said resonated with you, the promise and ambition that she spoke with. It was almost like she was talking directly to you.
You do your research. You study hard. You tinker away at things in your garage, supplementing your studies in your own way. And five years later, after you’ve graduated, you put in your application.
A letter arrives a few weeks later, emblazoned with the circular symbol you’ve kept in your mind’s eye all this time, and bold lettering on the front— Aperture Science Innovators. It’s addressed to you. You open it, and your fingers tighten around the smooth paper— “congratulations” it says. You’ve been accepted. At the bottom is Her signature. You trace over it with your fingers. Delicately, as gently as you’d handle an irreplaceable machine part.
Two weeks later your bags are packed and you’re boarding a flight to Detroit. The attendant greets you. You hold up your boarding pass and get on. You land a few hours later. Getting a cab would be too complicated— people don’t like to take the time to read, and most can’t speak the way you do. So you walk to the train station, it’s not too far. Just an hour or two. You’ve walked further before.
Flat fields flow by endlessly as the train rattles down its tracks. You lean your head against the window, watching the hues of gold rush by, blurring on into infinity.
The sun is gone when you pull up outside a strange little town, surrounded by chain link fence. You fish through your bag for the packet you’d been sent— and pull out the temporary ID you’d been given. You show it to the gate guard. He lets you in. A man is waiting to show you your dormitory. You shake your head at his offer of a tour— you’ll explore the place yourself tomorrow. There are a few days before you’re actually needed for orientation.
The room is small and plain. A bed, desk, and dresser, and a small closet. That’s alright. You don’t need much. You hang up your few articles of clothing and tuck your shoes next to the door. The bed isn’t soft, but it isn’t hard. You fall asleep quickly, exhausted from your travels.
The next few days are spent wandering. Visiting the little shops, the stations. Peering into labs where you can. Climbing over fences (they could never keep you out) before quickly retreating as a security guard passed. You don’t want to get in trouble before your internship even begins. You wonder if you’ll see her. But you only hear her voice in announcements as you trigger motion sensors throughout the complex.
When work actually starts, it’s tedious. Getting coffee. Taking documents to the shredder and the incinerator. You don’t usually see the labs. Or, well, much of anything. It’s just a lot of running here and there, back and forth at your superiors’ beck and call. It’s tiring. But you do it— after all, you want to be here, you want to do this— and you never give up.
It’s a few months before you see her— before your internship takes you to the main complex. Now you’re checking inventory, sorting mail, sorting records (and chucking the casualty lists into the incinerator as instructed). Occasionally they’ll call you in to fix the coffee maker or the refrigerator.
You hear her voice once, muffled— she’s talking to someone, to a group it seems, just outside the room you’re in. You look over your shoulder and catch a glimpse. Rosy cheeks and bright-red lips, wavy dark hair flowing around her shoulder, a smile on her face (manufactured, you can tell with just this glance that she’s concealing so very much), a bright red scarf tied around her neck.
Your eyes lock for just a second, and the corner of her mouth creases, dimpling her cheeks. Your heart races— that, that was a hint of a true smile. Warmth flushes your own cheeks and you tear your gaze away. Suddenly shy— much shyer than you’ve ever been before.
It doesn’t make sense to you. Not yet. Not until you start seeing her more. Not until her smiles become more frequent and pointed. Not until her gaze lingers on you a little longer than before each time. The fluttery feeling doesn’t go away— and you’re determined more than ever to reach her.
Of course, it happens sooner and easier than you think. She starts requesting you specifically to bring her her coffee. You take a red pen and draw a little smiley face next to her name before giving it to her. When you come up to her office, there’s a sticky note left on the monitor, in that oh-so-hard to read yet absolutely beautiful cursive of hers. At the end of it is a smiley face, so much more elegant and less childish than yours. You keep the note. On her next cup, you add a heart to the dot of the ‘i’ in her name. You start responding to her notes with little notes of your own, your rounded, sometimes scratchy handwriting a stark contrast.
The notes are never there when you get back. You like to think she kept them. You’re pretty sure she did.
A year after you arrive, your internship is over, and you’re up for a promotion— junior mechanic. Probably still more of the same, but you’ll be getting a salary now (not that you really have any use for it since Aperture provides your housing) and you’ll have a permanent place. But you’ll see her less. You’ll miss that, of course— but you’re finally moving beyond your station, moving up in the company.
The day before your internship ends, you get another note. “Wanna get coffee together tomorrow?” Your heart leaps. You scribble out your answer just beneath her writing.
You’re sitting across from her at the cafe table. The cafe serves the same stuff as the cafeteria, but it’s decorated more quaintly, and always costs more for some reason. Maybe because there’s sunlight coming through the windows.
“So, headed up the ladder,” she begins after the two of you sip your drinks (well, she sips her drink, you’re too caught up in the crimson of her lips). “I guess I won’t be seeing as much of you now.”
There’s something behind her cheery voice, a sadness that you’ve caught glimpses of before, a wistfulness deeper than her words. You look up, catching her gaze for a moment and nod in response.
“Well, this is nice. Maybe we should do this more often. Once a week, at least? Or you could come over to my place. We could spend time together. As friends, or something.” With that, she gives you a wink. Your cheeks flush bright red.
You catch the implication right away. Your hero, your inspiration— and now here you are sitting across from her at a cafe while she all but outright asks you out.
You thought you’d be excited for things to grow beyond the notes and the gestures. But you feel different than that. After the initial jolt, the initial flutter, you look back over at her and you see the chasm yawning out between the two of you. The mountain she’s perched on, the valley you’re standing in. Your scratchy print against her elegant cursive, your short, bitten nails against her sharp manicure, your messy ponytail against her shiny waves. You look down at your simple intern’s badge, then over at her emblazoned one. She doesn’t even have a title listed— everyone knows who she is.
You’re miles apart, even if you might have seemed to be closer.
You stand up, your throat knotting up as you shake your head. You can’t look at her now, but you can practically feel the disappointment in her face as she murmurs “oh.” You want to explain but you can’t, your thoughts racing a mile a minute. The last thing you want is to turn Her, your idol, the one who makes your heart flutter, the reason you came here in the first place, down.
But you can’t do this now. Not yet. Not until you’ve reached the top of the mountain. Not until you’re close enough for her to reach out her hand and pull you the rest of the way up.
“Let me know if you change your mind,” she says.
You pause, halfway to the door. You turn back just enough so that you can glimpse her, and give a tiny nod.
After that you throw yourself into your work. Up to senior mechanic, then technician, then engineer— you’re working on Aperture’s new technology now, its most important projects. But you’re still not close enough. Into the test chambers you go at the CEO’s behest, defying death and physics at breakneck speeds, trusting in the tech you’ve helped create to ensure your survival.
Sometimes you look up and see her watching from the observation room, the tell-tale flash of red. You don’t look too long.
The CEO falls ill. He leaves a disturbing message. You try not to think too much of it— you’re almost there.
Your superior fails a test. You’re not surprised. Not hurt, not sad. It just happens and now you’re in the upper echelon. Now you’re at the top— now, you can reach out to her again. Tell her you’ve changed your mind. You can be equals now.
You go to her office. She isn’t there to answer the door. “Don’t you remember Mr. Johnson’s last request?” They say to you. You tried to block it out, but you remember.
You use your pass on a high security door. It opens. Your name is emblazoned too now. Just like hers was.
Before you is a massive operating system. On the screen reads a message: “transfer complete. transfer successful. writing data : do not disconnect subject.”
She’s lying inside a tube-like compartment. A transparent coffin. Wires hooked up to her. Eyes closed. Lips still ruby red.
You reach out and touch the glass. There’s no response. There won’t be a response.
This technology is untested. This is the first human-AI interfacing project Aperture has conducted. There’s only a fifty percent chance it will work, and even if it does, it doesn’t change the fact that she’s gone. You’ll never clasp her small hands inside your own calloused ones, tuck your head against her shoulder, press your lips against hers.
You’ve finally reached the top of the mountain. Finally reached her. But it was too late. When you crested the summit, she was already gone, and there was only a spatter of crimson left behind to show that she was ever there at all.

Ed’s Borderlands Fics Masterpost
well finally
here is the masterpost of all of my Borderlands fics posted. most of them are Rhysothy focused to various AUs. I’m gonna update it as I post more but here it is, along with some of my commentary
right from the start big big BIG shoutout to @spoks-illogical-art, my partner in crime, my biggest inspo, without them honestly most of these fics wouldn’t exist, please check out their amazing art <3
(latest edit - 21/02/2021)
Atlas AU - our main timeline, follows events of Moxxi’s Heist. lots of different concepts and ideas but the core really is Tim moving to Promethea to get help from Rhys. gonna sort em here with posting date, check the ao3 series for the “timeline”
Hypothetically - 2240 words summary: Rhys talks a lot, but usually thinks about it too little.
coffee, cats & monographs - 2880 words summary: “Hey hey, easy. You don’t want to repeat the accident from last week, do you?” Rhys cooed towards the cat and picked her up, just as Timothy instructed him to. Hearing these words, Felicity meowed. “Oh, don’t say that. This is my office and I have the power here,” he answered, carrying her back to his personal space.
Or Timothy's cat pays a visit to Rhys' office in the morning. note: I am a stupid mofo and at this point Tim would also have Loader Bot fkjbfd just imagine hes not mentioned cause hes wandering off, typical LB
Have Faith - 1470 words summary: During the 7 year lockdown at the Handsome Jackpot, Timothy couldn't really have any hope for himself. But maybe on Promethea it could be different. note: sudden feelings while watching JoltzDude139′s stream
Warm Cheeks, Cold Hands - 1170 words summary: Rhys comes home early and wants to say hi to his husband. With no ulterior motive. None at all. note: first fic Ive ever posted where characters are married, actually. fuck it, Rhysothy Real, his name is Rhys Lawrence
the battle (and the aftermath) of the ages - 2970 words summary: In a situation like this everything was possible, they could pull any punches they could think of. Four beasts playing against each other, every single one of them thinking of striking the winning blow.
Or Promethea Squad plays UNO. And then watches a movie. note: I love Promethea Squad with my whole heart
okurimono (贈り物) - 4/4, 17170 words summary: “Not a bomb. Just a device with a message for Rhys. Trust me on that,” this time an emoji of both winking and showing off a tongue [;P] appeared on the surface of Zer0’s helmet. Ah. So they were definitely trying to mess him up. In a way. Unfortunately, he really didn’t have any other options. Almost with a defeat, Timothy took the ECHOrecorder right from their hands and looked around it again. Or Zer0 gives Timothy a peculiar mission. note: my first ever multichapter fic. took me legit abt 8 months to finish but I am absolutely satisfied with this. also the bonus ending. yes
(there is) something I see in you - 8690 words summary: How one Rhys Strongfork met one Timothy Lawrence and how they fell for each other. More or less. note: best to go into this one blind, I swear. dumbest fic Ive ever written and please take this as a recommendation
this world is gonna pull through - 14380 words summary: Timothy really hoped it wasn’t anything important. He had that tendency to forget things easily, even if he tried to fight it. But Rhys kept on smiling and went by his side. So it couldn’t have been that bad. Still dumbfounded, he felt Rhys leaving a kiss right on his cheek.“November 11th?
That- That seriously doesn’t ring any bells?” Rhys continued, brushing his hands against his shoulders. Or how Timothy spent one of his birthdays. note: also a love letter for Tim but a nicer one I guess kdjfnb dont ask how old is he i have no gdamn idea man
Strawberry Sweet - 3560 words summary: Rhys surprises Timothy with a gift for their date night in.
Happy Mercenary Day, Mr. Lawrence - 4670 words summary: How Timothy spent his first Mercenary Day on Promethea. note: I swear this is the best writer night Ive ever had. Ive written this whole thing in one night on Christmas day, solely on the inspo of that song I linked
Don’t Go Wasting Your Emotion - 4/4, 17080 words summary:  Afterwards, he went around with his usual duties. Getting a quick roundabout from his PA, checking several sectors himself and looking through the thousands of messages already sent to him via ECHOs. Rhys was ready to finally take on the day, yet when he made his way to the office, he saw the unusual envelope right by the edge of his desk. “For Rhys” was written on it. Straightforward enough. Or Rhys gets a letter from a secret admirer. note: another multichapter fic!! this one also took some time and well. its inspired by ABBA songs. cause only I would write a Rhysothy fic inspired by ABBA
Ratchet Effect - 7130 words summary: Knowing just how much overworked Rhys has been, Timothy wants to let them have a nice getaway in Lazy River Land. There's only one problem to overcome - ratch infestation. note: first fic of 2021!! Ive been playing a lot of bl3 suring the writing of it so it has a lot of stuff I had observed both on Promethea and on Jackpot
Reflections - 2250 words summary: Sometimes, Timothy needs a reminder.
Tales AU - second most important timeline. it’s Tales but Tim is a part of the group. sorted chronologically
A Story For Another Day - ongoing, for now -  2/25, 15280 words Tales AU main fic. it’s gonna be a big one
Connection Interrupted - 3240 words summary: With his driving shift finished, Timothy checks up on Rhys and Vaughn's plans.
Completely Hopeless - 1040 words summary: In which Fiona notices that Rhys behaves differently in front of a certain doppelganger.
infinity times infinity times infinity - 3460 words summary: Rhys and Timothy share some dreams and secrets underneath the stars. note: the beautiful combination of Sleeping At Last and Minecraft parodies. I promise it makes sense
reality can be whatever I want - 11420 words summary: “Hey, Tim?” Timothy didn’t even spare him a look, “Are we alone, or is he there with you?” Oh, this definitely won’t be pretty.
After the confession of Handsome Jack's AI in his head and his plan to infiltrate Helios, Rhys needs to set things right with Timothy. Somehow. note: thanosdancing.gif to Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” 80′s remix and a guest appearance from Ferocity but I cant legally say her name here
still here - 2820 words summary: It all had to go down, after Helios crashed. note: I have...a love/hate relationship with this one kjdfbfg I like it but it’s honestly an alternate ending and doesnt fit within our usual bad ending, so take it with a grain of salt. i ten jebany błąd językowy w summary, kiedy ja go poprawię
together at last - 5590 words summary: It all struck him down in an instant, in this one minute. They were all safe. And they were all alive. Nothing was threatening neither him, nor Timothy, nor Fiona. He could finally breathe out.
They all found each other again. note: I am multitasking most time of my life but I dont relate any other fic to multitasking more than this one. I was honestly doing 10 things at once while writing this dfkjbndf
David AU - this one is a sub AU to Tales AU and the plot is kind of complicated dfjkbfb please check the fic for further explanation
building in curved lines - 22490 words summary: “To be fair, you look terrible. You’re barely standing in one piece and none of your coffees will hold you together for that long,” Lilith paused, seemingly weighing the correct words in her head. “You haven’t really been holding on since… We rescued The Double.” Rhys sighed heavily. Why did she have to be so right about everything. Or how Rhys and Timothy adjust to the reality after the Handsome Jack AI. note: bday gift for Spok, EASILY one of my absolute faves and the longest fic Ive written thus far
outside of AUs - some concepts I play with that are honestly outside any of our concrete timelines/concepts + fics not focused on Rhysothy
Real - 770 words summary: Reconciling with your past is a little easier, when you have someone you love right in your arms. note: first blands fic I’ve ever written. the characterization isn’t really there yet but as a first shot at the game and my kind of “introduction”, I am still satisfied of it
(Un)Familiar Faces - 9620 words summary: Timothy pursed his lips and leaned over the wall a little. He’s had enough of this solitude of closed doppelganger cabinet. Today wasn’t the day for another self-loathing session. Today, he should go off on Helios and do something for himself.
Or Timothy spends the night at a Helios bar. But not as Handsome Jack. And not as Timothy Lawrence either. note: personal favorite of mine, tough love letter to Timothy Lawrence. I have so many fond memories of writing this, including getting drunk out of my mind just like Tim and Rhys here
basics of survival - 2010 words summary: Athena taught Timothy everything he needed to know about survival. Now, it was time to put these skills into use. note: wrote this right before rona outbreak on last day in my dorms. thats all

Promptober-2021: Putting on Hairs: Amber Waves of Mane
Primary Pairing: AiRina Words: 676 Rating: G AU: Theater, Monster, Cryptid Prompt: Amber Parent Fic: Putting on Hairs Time Frame: ???
----------
Author’s Note: This was actually the prompt for Oct 4th, and I posted it in the Discord server shortly after said prompt was posted, but then ran out of energy to post it here and over on AO3. Yay 14 hour shifts...
Summary: Rina is working with the theater lighting while Ai keeps her company.
----------
“A little more to the left, Emma-chan.” Kanata’s voice drifted up to the catwalk above. “Stage left.” She clarified.
Ai glanced away from the script she was reading to watch the redhead on stage effortlessly move a prop pylon thrice her size and likely even more times her weight. Ai never ceased to be amazed at the raw strength the giant retained while in human form.
“Now, this is for an outdoor scene.” Kanata continued, intentionally directing her voice upward this time. “Let’s see some sunlight, Rina-chan.”
“Roger.” The pink-haired girl next to Ai replied, tapping away at her tablet.
Ktchak! Ktchak!
Two sets of lights flooded the stage with a warm amber glow.
“A little more amber.” Kanata directed.
Ai watched with vested interest as her girlfriend made the requested adjustments. Not only did she love watching Rina work, but she also liked learning enough that she could help if needed.
“A little more…”
“Perhaps put on a hair more?” Ai couldn’t help suggesting.
Emma giggled at the reference to the name of the production and even Kanata cracked a smile. Rina, of course, remained as stoic as ever. However, she had often told Ai how much she enjoyed the puns, even if she couldn’t always express as such.
Rina turned the digital dial again and…
Tzzt! Pffsss…
Ai drew a sharp breath. Another power outage?
“It is just one bulb, Ai-san.” Rina stated, seeming to read her mind.
Tzzt! Pffsss…
“Or two…” She corrected.
“Everyone alright down there?” Ai leaned over the railing to see if the falling shards had hit anyone.
“We’re fine.” Kanata assured.
“I’ll get a broom.” Emma said, far too cheery at the prospect of cleaning.
“Hmm…” Rina tapped at something on her screen. “It seems there was a spike in our new power supply. I will need to make some adjustments.”
“How long do you think it will take to fix?” Kanata asked.
“Fifteen minutes.”
“Enough time for a nap…” the director grabbed her pillow from the seat beside her. Then, with a puff of purple smoke, she changed into her cartoonishly fluffy sheep form and curled up, asleep in seconds.
“Anything I can help with, Rinari?” Ai asked.
“Hmm…” Rina’s digital board stared blankly for a moment. “I have spares, however…”
“However…?”
“Kotori-san’s work has inspired me to try some new techniques.” Rina said, likely referencing the designer’s ability to weave special properties into her creations by using her own feathers. “Ai-san, may I borrow a few strands of your hair?”
“Of course, anything you want, Rinari. But… why my hair?”
“It is already close to the amber shade I need.”
“Close?” the doppelganger chuckled. “You know I can change it to any color you want.”
Rina held up her tablet to display an image of the broken bulbs.
Ai nodded before closing her eyes to form a mental image. Amber. Amber…
“Perfect.” Rina stated.
“How much do you need?” Ai asked, opening her eyes. “I can make it longer too.”
Rina shook her head. “It’s perfect.” She repeated, plucking a pair of strands.
Suddenly, Rina’s drone appeared beside the platform, delivering a small box before moving off to whatever task it was assigned next. Rina plugged the device into her digital board before popping it open and placing Ai’s hair inside. Finally, she began to type on her tablet.
The board’s display dimmed as some of the magic from the ofuda powering it was diverted into the device. Rina’s skin paled and her movements stiffened as her jiangshi body was partially deprived of that which kept her life force contained. Ai always worried when Rina performed experiments like this, but she trusted her girlfriend’s skills.
Eventually, the box began to glow the same color Kanata had approved earlier. Rina snapped open the box to reveal a pair of bulbs. Immediately, her skin regained its own color as the device was disconnected.
“Want to install this one?”
“With pleasure.” Ai accepted the bulb. There was no holding back her smile at the prospect of helping her beloved Rina.
----------
Author’s Note Continued: I realized as I was writing this scene that this is technically the first reveal of all four of these girls’ moster types and roles within the theater. As such, I tried to at least make mention of them while keeping within the character limit of the event. But, for the sake of clarity:
Rina - Jiangshi - Lights and Effects Department Ai - Doppelganger - Swing (backup for multiple minor/chorus roles) Emma - Giant - Set Design Kanata - Somnophore (more aptly, Somnophage, or Sleep Paralysis Demon) - Director
I love the idea of the talisman typically depicted on a jiangshi’s forehead being Rina’s boards, both paper and digital, thus her monster type was an easy choice.
Ai, I’ve forgotten more than half of the ideas I had for monster types, but I did want to give her some sort of role within the theater that would allow her to use her “club saving” abilities as a jack of all trades. Yuu ended up with the back stage jack duties, so Ai got those for on the stage, thus she became a Swing. And a doppelganger who could shift form and outfits on her own seemed fitting for such a role.
I don’t remember who gave me the idea to make Emma a giant, or the reasoning behind the choice, but it stuck with me. From there, the idea of having her use her strength to move set pieces around wasn’t much of a leap.
Kanata, I think I explained my reasoning for her monster type back when I mentioned her in the first YohaRiko chapter of PoH. As for her being a director, I love the idea of using her canon trait of falling asleep anywhere, or pretend to sleep but actually be paying close attention, as she sets things in motion and trusts the actors to do their thing for the most part, only intervening when she deems necessary.
That all said, this chapter will definitely end up included officially in PoH, but only after I reveal some other stuff, like the power source, what, or who it is. And expand some stuff here, like the bit I trimmed where Ai is concerned about the new lights exploding as well, but Rina believes they will work better, because reasons.
And finally, as for amber lights, that actually is a theater thing. While I didn’t quickly find evidence of theaters using real amber for their lighting, there is apparently a “bastard amber gel” that is used to help make the light seem more natural.
I don’t know how an actual set and lighting test session would go in a real theater, so I just made things as simple as possible here. If any theater geeks out there know better, I’d be happy to listen, but will likely keep things as they are and handwave it as this theater being different. Very different.

Pokemon All-Stars: A Fan Region/Game/Alternate Universe Idea
I like watching and rewatching Original Pokemon Game/Region videos. Like Mr. Buddy's "What if X was a Pokemon Region" and stuff like that. I wanna make-or, I guess, write-my own. Since Regions are kind of a character all their own and I'm a Wannabe Character Artist, I wanted to try and make one my own.
I've got no skills in coding, pixel arts, or anything, so this will forever be just some kind of dumb fanfic that sometimes incorporates Game Mechanics to justify things if it were able, for some Godforsaken reason, 'stolen' for a game. Cause, in 2021, no idea feels too big or too dumb. And, uh, trust me, this'll be a dumb fanfic of an idea. So be aware for the subpar writing talents of some wannabe writer who doesn't know shit.
Small disclaimer though:
>This region is being made with the intention that every extra feature will be available in it. Z-Moves, Regional Variants, Gygantamax, Mega Evolutions, and maybe some things I've forgotten. This probably won't matter cause it's just a dumb fanfic plot bible with mechanics peppered in. Competitive balancing be damn! Pokemon Fans can create their own balance! That's what the Battle Simulator is for! In fact, if this was a real game, then it'd have a Battle Simulator like Showdown built into it.
>This is an open source Fanfic Bible. You can take this idea and run with it if you want. You can omit all my bad ideas even!
>I won't be making my own Fakemon. I don't like a lot of Fakemon that exists out there and, trust me when I say this: I am no better than them. In fact, I'm fucking worse.
>If this WERE a game, it probably WOULD still have to cut some Pokemon. I doubt that kinda, and I won't get into why I think dexit was dumb personally, cause it doesn't really matter. But, like, my fan game/fanfic will have a lot of shit going on in it. So, like, realistically, there would probably need to be a cut, if not for data, than just cause there's a lot of work to do as is. But, like, again, under the context of a fic, this wouldn't be an issue.
>With THAT said, I'd want this game to have a Gen 2 Sprite aesthetic. My fangame, don't care if ya'll don't like that.
>I'm probably gonna copy a LOT of stuff from other Fangames I've played. My shit memory probably won't allow me to remember what I'm biting from what, so be free to call me out whenever. Cause if I stole the mechanic, I probably liked it the game. And if not, well, I'd like the recommendation.
Fuck, this was long already. The rest is under the cut, so, like, if you're already turned off, you can stop reading. I understand. I'm kind of a windbag.
Tumblr media
Okay, so how many of you guys have seen this picture on the internet? It's a picture of a ton of Pokemon regions all...basically stitched together, since not only could this never be canon, but this goes beyond the size of even most open world games today. But this was the inspiration for this project. The map probably wouldn't, and probably couldn't, look like this, but it perfectly sums up what I'd want out of this game. Thus, it'll be our placeholder.
Our hometown of Capricorn Town is home to Professor Chestnut, and you, her faithful assistant, are about to set off on a Pokemon adventure of your own! The Professor is encouraging you to see the region of Sidus for yourself and is even willing to give you a Starting Pokemon!
Starting Pokemon
Now, if I'm not making new Pokemon, which Starter will it be? Well, the game will have the data for all the starters and will randomly select a Grass, Fire, and Water Type for you to choose from. Those will be your starters, with the option of also choosing Pikachu, Eevee, and Riolu, the two mascot mons...and Riolu, who is kind of a mascot mon, but a lesser one.
Let's say for this example, your options are Torchic, Piplup, Rowlet, Pikachu, Eevee, and Riolu. And, uh, get used to the words 'random' and 'generator', those are our keywords.
Anyway, once you get your pick, there'll be some kind of tutorial mission the Professor will send you on. This will introduce you to two very important things;
1. One of your Rival.
2. An Evil Team Grunt.
Tumblr media
Rivals?!
Now to start getting into why this game might still be pretty big still be big despite the sprites on modern consoles.
Each of your Rivals would be one kid from each region of the 8 Mainline Games from Kanto to Kalos. How this'll be decided is that each pair of kids will be plugging into a generator and will pick between either the boy or girl version.
Ex. Brendan and May both cannot be in the game. Instead, they'll be plugged into this generator. Let's say the generator fell onto May. She'll be one of your Rival. Repeat this process 7 more times until you have 8 Rivals sprinkled throughout the world, each one given a defined personality and better AI to make them harder trainers to fight.
May will have one of the Hoenn Starters, sans Torchic. Regardless of whether or not Protagonist-San picked Torchic, May will either have a Treecko or Mudkip, again, chosen at random per kid. Whichever Starter you picked, your first rival will have a starter that beats yours. So, let's say moving forward, May has a Mudkip and you a Torchic. The other kids will have random starters of the various regions they originally hail from.
Anyway, your rivals will wander the overworld. If they see you, they'll battle you on sight. If they lose, they'll be gone after the next time you turn the game off. They won't battle you again until they respawn, but you can hang out with them. In fact, you can even recruit them to be in your party for a few days and they'll follow you around and just generally be your friend. It'll make every battle a double battle, but they'll battle you again before their timer runs out, so be prepared!
BANG! BANG! ENTER! Team Wild!
Tumblr media
The two of you will have to face off against Team Wild! They have a Cowboy theme to them, using a mix of Ground and Steel-Types, with a few Pokemon being added in for good measure like the Ponyta Lines, Cacnea Line, and Remoraid. Cause...it's a gun.
They're an outlaw gang, they're rough and tough (or, at least, a mild threat) and will always throw down when they spot ya. Something I'm just sniping from JelloApocalypse is that they'll appear sporadically and act as Timed Events across the map.
You and your new Rival beat them and send you packing. I'd imagine May and the other Rivals would mostly be friendly, but I'm sure there's one or two that'll just be jerks to you. Regardless of personality, they'll be pretty tough and programmed to skill with you. Your strongest mon you have on hand when you fight them will be the level their entire team.
With your tutorial done, the world is opened up! Your mom gives you your running shoes, some Pokeballs, and your...I don't know, PokeCelular or something, just the regional gadget that does a bunch of stuff. From holding your map to holding your VS Seeker.
The PokeCelular will also give you notifications on where Team Wild are! You can choose to ignore the events, but if you do, then they'll start to appear in the overworld know and will get progressively stronger.
A Balancing Act
This game will be an open world, 8-Bit Sprite Game for you to explore after you leave Capricorn!
So how do we balance that?
Well, we got our Rival out of the way already, so let's move on. Gym Leaders will have a pretty linear progression. However, regardless of which Gym you tackle first, they'll all be at the same level.
It doesn't matter if you decide to go across the map and battle the Bug Gym, he'll stay at Level 10, just like the Normal Gym. Whe you get the second badge, they'll all jump to Level 15. NPC Trainers will follow the same progression; the higher your badge number, the stronger the number of Pokemon they'll be.
Wild Pokemon will also get stronger. The more badges you get, it'll attract stronger wild Pokemon because they'll see you're stronger and will come out more.
The overworld will also have various dungeons in them that'll be Level Locked. Say, you go through a forest and you're just trying to reach the end of a maze. The Trainers and Pokemon will function the same as I've mentioned before. But, you can decide to go deeper into the dungeon. These Pokemon will be level locked, usually something of a high level, because this is a more dangerous part of the dungeon. But, there'll be some goodies down there, like rarer Pokemon and some kind of really rare and good item like a TM or something.
How will you traverse? Well, first of all, HMs? They're semi-back. BUT, instead of having to deal with teaching Cut to a Pokemon, you just need the move Cut and a Pokemon that can use the move and you'll be able to use Cut. A few other Pokemon that are reasonable candidates, but don't get cut, will be allowed to do this too. Like, Gallade can use Cut. It can't learn the move, but just holding the HM will get the job done.
Controversial opinion, but I think I've always liked the idea of HMs. On paper, they give you a reason to explore the world and go back to areas you couldn't before for goodies and make for a good way to get off dungeons until you get the needed item. Even something like Cut can be used to open up new areas for exploration for your squad of mons.
BUT, well, HMs suck. As moves, they suck save for, like, 2...MAYBE and they're only for, like, a handful of areas. You either hand them out as evenly as possible, forcing mons to take moves you don't wanna use, or you just get an HM Slave or two to use 'em all. But like they, they serve their function and all you need is the Pokemon in question and NOT teach them the move. If you need a Move Deleter just so people aren't stuck having to use Rock Smash for three towns, then there's a problem with your RPG. Imagine playing Final Fantasy and you had to give your Fighter the Bronze Axe to get through a forest and still had to fight with it, even though you got a +12 Silver Sword! It's no wonder people hated these things! But I don't think getting rid of them and introducing Rental Pokemon was a good solution either and adds a different, albeit less intrusive problem.
Gym Leaders
Tumblr media
So, how do Gym Leaders work?
Much like your rivals, they'll be randomly generated. Let's say, hypothetically, there's a pool of 60 Gym Leaders and Elite Four members. The game will randomly generate 16 to be Gym Leaders. The generator will have some kind of complicated math (at least, too complicated for me) so that you don't have more than 2 gyms of the same type. (Example: Misty and Nessa might be Active Gyms, Siebold can't be selected for a Gym cause the Water Slots are taken).
As a trade off, some Gyms might have special conditions before you can challenge them. Like, if you got stuck with Koga as a Gym Leader, than he'll only let you in if you complete a nearby dungeon and help his daughter out cause he doesn't trust her to make it back on her own. Or, like, Claire's a Gym Leader, but she won't battle you unless you've collected 7 Gym Badges prior at least.
The Gym Leaders, as mentioned before, will get progressively stronger with each badge obtained. After the 8th badge, you can go and climb Victory Road, face the E4 and confront the Champion! You can keep hunting Gym Leaders, but just remember that the E4 will always be 10 Levels above the strongest gym you beat. And they'll just get stronger with every one you beat until all 16 are slain.
Another handful, let's say 8, Gym Leaders/E4 Members will be wondering around as NPC Trainers. The justification is that this big super region is in some Alternate Universe Pokemon Game that has all the Pokemon and other important trainers in it, hence why we can have a game where Roxanne and Lenora are hanging out at a coffee shop. They're not Rivals, more like stronger NPCs you can rematch and wonder the map. They're not here to be the very best like no one ever was.
I mean, I'd like, like, 10-20 instead of 8 extras, but let's not get TOO greedy...yet...
Elite Four
Tumblr media
And now, it's time to flip the script. Cause if E4 members can be Gym Leaders, then who are the Elite Four?
Easy. The Rivals.
Tumblr media
All the Rival characters will be put in a random generator as well. The four that are chosen. You can have an Elite Four made up of Wally, Marnie, Hau, and Barry and you gotta deal with it.
This is excluding Brendan and May, Blue, and Calem and Serena. Anyone else is fair game.
Champion
So, the Champion. Who would it be in this? There was a funny idea I had, but this is a Pokemon Game. So there would be two versions. We'll call them Pokemon Dawn & Dusk. The difference between these games is the game Champion!
Tumblr media
Benga would be the Champion of Pokemon Dusk, the grandson of Alder! His final Team will include Volcarona, Garchomp, and Dragonite, Pokemon he used in Black and White. I'd also include Scrafty, Rampardos, and Golurk, Pokemon used against you in White Treehollow and Black Tower areas.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the Champion of Pokemon Dusk will be Zinnia, the Lorekeeper! Her team would include the Goodra, Tyrantrum, Altaria, Noivern, and Salamence she used in her original team, with her plucky Whismur sidekick becoming an Exploud and her ace.
You would've met them in the beginning of the game and would've showed off a bit by helping you with Team Wild before. They'll pop in and out throughout the game, at first amused by your tenacity, but not wanting a rookie like you to get hurt. But if you keep bonking Team Wild, they'll be impressed with how strong you are.
The show up to chat again when you beat 8 Gym Leaders, and will pop in if you White Out to give you some advice. White Out three times and they'll feel bad for you and give you an egg. Benga will give you a Larvesta Egg and Zinnia a Bagon Egg.
EXTRAS
So I don't got a lot of ideas for the Post Game, but there is one idea I thought would be cool if, if after you defeat the champion, they give you a call. They'll tell you that there are strong trainers wondering the Overworld and to be careful.
Tumblr media
Because dotting the overworld will be Champions passed and proper! Cynthia, Blue, Lance; all of them are rocking Lv 100 Teams and are out for blood. They won't challenge you, but if you talk to them, there will be no backing out of the battle! You come with your A-Game!
Tumblr media
sI'm not exactly in love with the idea of Team Wild. Maybe the Evil Team should go full fanservice and just be Team Rainbow Rocket. Or maybe go half-and-half; having past Evil Team members and leaders walk around in cowboy gear and acting as Team Wild executives.
I'd also would love Tournaments. Like, maybe that could be a weekly event in some town, they'll how tournaments and the characters that aren't designated as Gym Leaders and such will attend. Maybe there's a cash prize, maybe you'll win Pokemon Eggs of rare, guaranteed shines, or maybe you'll get some kind of important quest items.
Yeah, I want quests! All sorts of side quests! And can't forget what I'd do with Legendairs;
If you know Bengal's team, you'll know he's got the Lati Twins. I don't like that personally and would prefer Legendaries to be Super Bosses. Like, you gotta do a lot to find them. And when you do, their stats are boosted and they become an Uber Boss! You catch them in a cutscene after you beat them!
There's also just a ton of characters I didn't get around to or really have a place for. Emma, Looker, N, and the Stat Trainers all come to mind. Overall, I'd want them to pepper the world as well, but don't have anything to say except this: Pokemon has made a lot of memorable characters. Both good and bad. And this is probably my dream Pokemon Game; one where you can hang out with your favorites

Sanctuary (Jalaska) - Grinder
AN: Wow…been a hot minute since I posted anything to AQ. Currently working on a series but decided I should give myself a wee break and write something else. This is a songfic based on Sanctuary by Joji whom I absolutely adore. And, who knows, maybe I’ll write more Joji inspired fics and make it a collection. Anyway, I hope y'all enjoy! Stay safe!
Lots of love to all the discord people for helping me with this and, especially @artificialeevee and V. If anyone of you are thinking about joining the server, do it!
The year is 9872. And I’ve fucking had it.
The name’s Jinkx Monsoon; intergalactically tolerated American space Historian, a linguist of 3 human languages, and 4 alien languages.
Location: Space somewhere.
I have a question; Is it wrong to destroy the only housekeeper on your ship, an AI bot whose sole purpose is to clean and only clean? It’s nothing personal against the bot. It’s just…the thought of thriving as a glamorous space housewife for an hour or two is very appealing to me at this moment.
You see, life on the Sanctuary ship isn’t exactly exciting anymore.
Dumb name. The place is anything but a sanctuary. Ivy and I just call it ‘Big Debbie.’
Speaking of Ivy, she’s fallen asleep at the wheel again. Yes, this has happened before—a few times. The first time, we all had a laugh about it. The second time, we joked about how it was becoming a habit. But the third time, it was starting to kind of get on the Captain’s nerves.
The ship has been spinning in slow circles for half an hour now. Shea storms in, flicks Ivy in the ear, waking her up. I breathe a laugh out of my nostrils as Ivy rolls her eyes. The ship stops spinning and is back on course. Destination? Nowhere.
I notice how Shea looks at me now as I sit my feet up on the controls. She looks like she wants to say something. But what is there to even say? She shares my exact thought and leaves the room.
I look at Ivy as she types away on her keyboard, a bowl of yogurt in my hand, cold spoon in the other. “What are you thinking about?”
“All the fuel we’re wasting.” She puts on a fake smile, hiding her frustration.
Before I get another chance to speak, Phi Phi sits in the other pilot seat, next to me, and slaps my feet off the control panel. “Can we please avoid accidents?”
“What’s the fun in that?” I sulk. Heck, at least it would give us all something to talk about.
Who even are we anymore? And how did we get here?
Let me explain.

9869. 3 Years Ago
“Be warned, Monsoon; If you mess this up, you’re out of here.” Alyssa’s words ran circles in my head.
I resisted the urge to grab a glass of complimentary wine as I walked around the exhibition room, nodding and offering a fake smile to the attendees. The wine probably tasted like ass. These folks loved that type of stuff. I wasn’t part of their social class, not used to such tastes, so it was a hard pass on the booze. However I hoped my green emerald tea dress told them that I was one of them. Not that it would have mattered anyway. To them, I was just staff. But I knew I was so much more than that.
I was pretty good at hiding my nerves. This opportunity wasn’t given to just anyone, something I have waited on for a long time. I was to host an entire exhibition, the Universal Museum of Space History’s Lost Treasures reveal. A “One Night Only” event with a guest list of people who probably ate breakfast with a second cousin to a Royal at least once in their lives. And I couldn’t fuck it up. I couldn’t.
Before I walked into the room that night, I was just a tour guide, and in the current Century, it wasn’t as glamorous as it sounded. My manager, Alyssa insisted that we stick to the science-y feel. Instead of having an actual real live tour guide, we just used a hologram instead. And that hologram was yours truly. Groovy, right?
But this event? This meant opportunities. A possible promotion! And not to mention, I would be a part of something big. I was blessed with the task of unveiling a one of a kind artifact. No one knew where it came from. Or the real name. But they called it the Revitalization Grain. The name didn’t do it justice.
This pretty, glowy stone brought forth the growth of nature, crops, and resources. If I was a saleswoman, this is the part I’d say, “But wait! There’s more.” It had healing properties, offered a sort of hit, and even brought someone back from the dead (apparently).
Standing in that room, with all the aristocrats surrounding me, I was the only person who knew all that. The amount of digging and snooping around I had to go through to obtain this information was extensive.
Of course, not everything about the stone was known yet; where it came from, if it was life-form made or natural, or what its real name was.
I passed a Glarglaxian, and she wriggled her scaled fingers in a wave at me. I asked her how she was doing. Not that I cared. It was all about being a good hostess. But I really wanted to grab her and say, “Wait 'til you see the shit we’re about to pull out.” The excitement was getting to me.
Greeting a few others, I saw the tall woman standing in front of a floor-length window, staring out at the galaxy and sipping her wine. Damn, she looked classy in her long black mermaid dress, her blonde hair falling to her lower back. She looked human; therefore, I guessed that was what she was.
She seemed lonely, and I had to be a good little hostess and make her feel welcome. I walked up to her and cleared my throat. She turned to look at me, and I swear her eyes were black pits. She blinked, and I saw her eyes were actually just a dark brown. Maybe it was just the lighting in the place.
“I hope everything is up to a satisfactory standard for you, ma'am.” I started before spurting out a few other statements.
“Yes,” she drawled, “I’m having a ball.”
I rose on my toes and lowered to the ground again. “I can see that.”
“Well…if I could make one improvement, I would have chosen someone else for the entertainment. Someone more…electronic.” The woman said, her eyes trailing behind me.
I looked around to the other side of the room, where Cher was singing something a bit more slow and soft for her tastes. Yes, we bagged Cher for this gig. The woman was centuries old and still an absolute diva. How she hadn’t been given her own planet yet was beyond me. I think her Mom was in the crowd too.
“I couldn’t agree more with you, ma'am.” I looked back at the blonde.
“Please. Alaska will do."
Alaska…Strange choice of name. The last name of Nocturna, USA, Earth. It had been known as Nocturna for over 2000 years. Quite peculiar to choose a name like that.
"Apologies.” I smiled.
Alaska held out her glass of wine. “Here.”
I waved a dismissive hand. “Oh, I shouldn’t.”
“You can stop with the formalities, Jinkx. I can feel your anxiety."
"My anxiety?” This caught me off guard. And not to mention, “wait…how did you…?”
Alaska pointed a perfectly manicured finger to the left of my chest. I looked down. The name tag. “Oh. Of course. How silly of me."
"Weird spelling. But, other than that, I like it.” Alaska commented.
“Um, no. It’s spelled normally."
"Well, it was originally spelled without a 'k.’”
“No. It’s always had the 'k.’”
“No. The human race only started to spell it with the 'k’ when Jinkx Jenner was born back in the 49th Century.”
Alaska sipped her wine, and I was speechless. How the fuck didn’t I know that? I didn’t want to sound like one of those 'I’m an intellectual’ types. But I had dedicated a significant amount of time to learning about my origin planet’s history. Even going back to the caveman times.
Alaska ended the void of silence, offering me her wine once more. “Here. Drink up, Jinkx-y.”
My face flushed at the nickname, blinking a few times before finally accepting the drink. I took just a sip, not to appear unprofessional. As I expected, it was bitter. But I tried to hide my scowl and handed it back. Alaska’s upper lip curled up.
“Like that’s going to do anything.” She commented.
“Honestly, I’m fine. But thank you for the offer.” I beamed, putting my hands together. “Are you here alone?”
“No. I’m here with…friends.” She stretched the ’s’ sound. Her gaze traveled to a particular group of people. Looking around, I took in how attractive they all were. They all had glitter painting the side of their faces. And their lashes were long and thick, just like hers.
And dumbass me just came out with it. “God, you’re all so attractive.”
Looking back, my eyes widened. Why I had said it, I have no idea.
“Thank you.” She drawled.
“I-I…that just came out. I’m sorry.” I stammered.
“Don’t worry. We get it all the time.” Alaska stated before smiling.
I thought she was just gloating. But if I had known back then what I know now, it would have meant something else entirely.
Hours later, I was giving a speech that I must have written over 50 times before being proud of the final product. There was a red velvet curtain behind me. I was moments away from pulling a gold rope, dropping the curtain, and finally revealing the Revitalization Grain. The mixture of anxiety and excitement stirring inside was euphoric.
While I was delivering the speech, I spotted Alaska in the crowd, how eager she looked. Her friends were scattered around the room, sharing her expression. It only made me more excited.
And finally. Pulling the gold tassel, dropping the curtain, the stone was finally revealed in its glowing glory. I heard the crowd gasp in surprise. But I was too busy staring at the stone in its glass container.
And gasps turned to shrieks. This was what caught my attention.
I looked around. Alaska and her friends were holding laser guns, pointing them at the other guests. I don’t know why, but Cher started singing again. I guess maybe she was trying to calm the situation. For fuck sake.
“What the fuck??” I exclaimed as Alaska made her way towards me.
No. Towards the Revitalization Grain.
“It’s been a great night, beautiful people.” Alaska looked at the crowd once before turning and smashing her gun into the glass, smashing it to pieces. Oddly iconic.
My heart had risen to my throat as I watched her reach in and lift the stone. Where the fuck was the security?? Before I had the chance to act, the stone’s light became brighter in a matter of seconds. So bright if I hadn’t looked away, I probably would have been blinded.
I shielded my eyes, hearing the shrieks from the crowd along with Cher still singing like the legend she was. And when the light dimmed, I looked back.
And my stomach knotted.
Alaska’s hair was longer now, bigger, thicker, and practically white. Confirming that my earlier misjudgment was actually correct, her eyes were all black. Her skin shimmered as if glitter ran through her blood. And those nails, those perfectly manicured nails were longer and pointier.
She was a Celestial. Her friends were Celestials. How hadn’t I clocked this before, what with the glitter? And that also explained why I had just blurted out how fucking hot they all were. It was an effect they had on everyone they met.
“Thanks for being a great host, Jinkx-y.” She winked before approaching me. She held the stone tight as she leaned over and kissed me on the cheek.
Why hadn’t I tried to grab the stone? Because of the feeling of her lips on my skin, I swear I was high for a few seconds. I recovered only when she was walking down from my podium. A Glarglaxian charged as if ready to tackle her to the ground. But one of her buddies intervened, sending the Glarglaxian sliding across the shining floor with a single shove.
Alaska stood in a circle with her followers now. She turned and winked one more time. And just like that. With the flash of pink light, she was gone.
-_-_-_-
I called Alyssa immediately after the incident to just let her know how it went. She was mad because I called it “a small fuck up.“ She was a religious woman, so the string of curses and threats of hiring a hit man took me by surprise.
What seemed to be 5 minutes later, she was at the museum, her sugar baby boyfriend in tow. Her first question was, “where the flying fuck where the security?”
As far as I was aware, there was no security. Not one guard was in the room for the whole thing. Turns out, they were all hiding in a closet and smoking up. She fired them immediately. And there was no doubt I would be next.
Then came the talk with Government officials. It was all through holographs but still scary as shit. They were equally as disappointed to hear a group of Celestials had stolen something so powerful. They said the matter of the situation was so grave, the President would most definitely have to hear about it. Not one of the US or some other Earth country Presidents. The President of the Universe. So you could understand why they would rather not.
And instead of deciding amongst themselves what should be done next, they put that on Alyssa. But she was just the manager of a museum. How was that fair? And bless Alyssa and all, but she wasn’t very bright.
Because I couldn’t help but feel somewhat responsible, I piped up, offering to go and find the Revitalization Grain myself. They laughed at first. But upon expressing my knowledge of Celestials and being able to speak their language, they agreed. They would find more people.
And that was it. I was destined to travel the universe.
Of course, I cursed myself for even speaking up. I had never been a part of something like this. And I couldn’t just be like, "Hello, lovelies. Just letting you all know, I’ve changed my mind. Unemployment doesn’t sound that bad.” I drank two bottles of wine that night.
It took a year to prepare for the journey. And in the process, I met my team. Here, have a nice bullet point list I made a̶n̶d̶ ̶s̶l̶a̶v̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶v̶e̶r̶.̶
♡ Shea Couleé: The Captain.
♡ Sasha Velour: the First Mate and executive officer.
♡ Roy Haylock: Chief Officer of the Flight Department.
♡ Ivy Winters and Phi Phi O'Hara: Pilots.
♡ Milk, Kameron Michaels, and Bob: Engineers.
♡ Willam Belli and Courtney Act: Technicians.
♡ Me, Jinkx Monsoon, narcoleptic nerd: Linguist and Historian.
We met up a few times, different planets for each occasion. I’d say our visit to Barcelona (no, not the lovely sunny destination on Earth but the planet) was what solidified our friendships.
But for that whole year, I couldn’t get one person out of my head. And that was Alaska. I thought not much of her while we talked that night at the exhibit. But that fucking kiss on the cheek. That’s what got me. The momentary high, the way I was just frozen as she walked away, robbing us all of the stone. Whenever I remember that night, all I see is her image, like some kind of PowerPoint presentation. And Baby, I love your way plays in my head . Appropriate moment to call me a simp?
-_-_-_-
9872. Present Day
But wait. That doesn’t exactly explain how you all ended up in your current situation!
Shut up. I’m getting there. I just need a wine break.
I find myself in our kitchen. On my way there, I pass Willam and Bob playing ping pong. We went through a phase where we couldn’t decide who was the best and who got to go next. But the fun had long faded away. Same with the karaoke machine. That belongs to me. I must say, if I hadn’t volunteered for this shit, I would have belted out a song and won over an audience years ago. But without getting off-topic; the karaoke machine ain’t fun anymore.
Courtney stood there in the rec room, singing the lyrics that appeared on the screen. Her once electrifying whistle tones brought down to a somber dirge. “If you’ve been waitin’ for fallin’ in love, babe you don’t have to wait on me. 'Cause I’ve been aimin’ for heaven above but an angel ain’t what I need.”
Reaching the kitchen, I pour a glass of wine and look out the window into the far off distance. And all of a sudden, I’m reminded of Alaska, standing in that window, looking classy, sipping her wine, how the glitter on her face shimmered as she turned to look at me.
“What are you smiling at?”
Fuck, Ivy’s here too. She’s sitting on a counter in the corner, eating yogurt. I look away.
“Oh. It’s nothing.” I reply.
“I haven’t seen you smile in a long time.” Ivy points out. “Is it really just nothing.”
“It’s just…something funny from back home.” I lie.
Ivy places the bowl to the side. She’s silent momentarily before her face scrunches up, tears surfacing. For fuck’s sake, curse me and my foot in mouth disease!
I sit next to my best friend as the tears come flooding. I hold her in my arms, letting her know I’m her shoulder to cry on right now. It had been years since Earth was destroyed. But the grief was still fresh for her.
Actually, for the whole team.
I’m considered the lucky one. After all, I had no loved ones left on Earth. But my team? They had families; parents, siblings, partners, children of their own. And now, they’re gone.
How the Earth was destroyed? We tried to figure it out ourselves. But with no answers, we are just wasting away, flying around in Space on our ship. Nowhere to go. No purpose in life.
-_-_-_-
9870. 2 Years ago.
I was high-key worried that a year wasn’t enough time to prepare for this mission. And this thought hit harder upon arriving on the planet Celestia.
Although, we were expecting some sort of barrier, guards, a surprise attack. But there was nothing. Huh.
The place was pretty much just a copy of Earth, except if you took 10 hits of LSD and were pushed into a never-ending hallucinogenic trip. The blue sky was an oceanic hue, clouds glittering, pink trees everywhere like someone just scattered houses and buildings in the middle of a forest. Nearby planets were visible in the sky, the stars shining bright, and I questioned whether it was night or day.
Music pulsated through the air, all different songs playing at once from all different directions; Electronic dance music. I figured that’s why Alaska wasn’t feeling Cher the night of the exhibit.
Upon approaching, Shea quickly noticed that locals weren’t exactly acting how we thought they would. They were excited, cheering, and beckoning us to land. We did so, parking in what I guessed was a parking lot? Except there were no cars.
Exiting Big Debbie, we were distracted momentarily, watching as the Celestials ran around, hand in hand, their spirits high.
But Shea got right to it. “OK! Calm down. Where’s the Revitalization Grain?”
A Celestial approached us, like an animal ready to pounce, and Shea was ready to brawl.
“Just down the street. Take a right. You’ll see a marquee all lit up. It’s just in there. Costs to get in, though.” The Celestial explained.
The fuck? How was everyone on this planet this chilled out?
We all collectively agreed to keep our lasers hidden since they seemed harmless now. But I knew they could pack a punch. I had seen it the night of the exhibition. Better to be safe than sorry.
On the way to the marquee, we bickered over how the hell we were going to even pay. Well, Shea and Sasha mostly. Willam and Courtney were more interested in how attractive the Celestials were. couldn’t blame them.
All the while, I looked around me, hoping to see a certain someone. But then again, if she saw me here, surely she’d know something was up.
Coming to the marquee’s entry line, Sasha managed to get a peek at the front of the line. People were literally paying with anything - false eyelashes, jewelry, scales from their own flesh, fake nails, whatever they had on them.
Roy decided to stay behind, the only thing he thought that would interest them being his rose-tinted sunglasses. And he was not willing to part with them. Over much debating on what we would offer, we agreed that maybe a simple handshake, a sign of peace, would suffice.
We were right. How I wished I could just live there.
When we were in, the deja vu set in. Celestials, humans, and other alien species stood around, sipping wine and talking amongst themselves. The music wasn’t live and provided by Cher. But it played from speakers in the corners, the beats fast and fitting with the environment.
And there, on a podium in the middle of the room, was the Revitalization Grain. Its glow was brighter than the last time I had seen it. The light seemed to travel through the podium and into the ground, like veins running through a human body.
I looked around for Alaska, but she was absent. Damn.
Shea gave the command, and we withdrew our weapons. The once cheerful and friendly atmosphere was brought to a grinding halt as the people began to cower. The rest of the team reassured them everything would be fine if they just stayed put. I approached the podium and lifted the precious stone.
And with that, the light from the podium disappeared, but the stone still shone bright. This was it—time to hit the road.
Everything was going so well. We had gotten back to the ship safely. No one even bothering to attack us.
But before we could get high enough, the ship started to go through what we thought was turbulence. But of course, the Celestial’s decided now was the best time to fight. They were attacking Big Debbie in their own flying pods. There was no way we were going to make it out of the planet alive.
And so we were forced to land in hopes we could fight them off. Disembarking Big Debbie, there was indeed a face-off. My team and the Celestials stood outside; the area around us was more barren and dusty than its main city area.
We were all yelling at each other, not a single word clear enough to understand with the many voices. All I got from the exchange was that we argued they had stolen a rare artifact. They claimed it belonged to them now. It was just back and forth madness.
And then came another pod, this one bigger and more glittery.
And my heart stopped.
It was Alaska.
She exited the pod.
Oooooh, Baby I love your way.
She looked right at me as if she could sense the stone within my satchel.
I smiled shyly, “Hi, Ala- -”
“Jinkx, give me the stone.” She demanded, holding out her hand.
“Ugh…no,” I replied, clutching the satchel strap.
“Jinkx, if you don’t give me that rock…” Alaska growled as she stormed towards me. Shea tried to block her way, but with a simple wave of her hand, Shea was lifted from the ground and thrown back.
Like a dumb ass, I just screamed and took off. I abandoned my poor team, leaving them with the Celestials. But honestly, Alaska at that moment was terrifying. She really did growl. And her eyes were black pits again. Scary stuff, really.
I don’t know how long I ran for, but the sun was scorching, there was no wind or moisture in the air. I just ran and ran until I had no choice but to stop. My legs and lungs burned.
I was doubled over, hands on my knees and panting. I made a mental note to work out more, which I still haven’t done.
Looking behind me, Alaska was nowhere to be seen.
“Wh…What…?” I straightened.
A manicured hand clamped down on my shoulder, spinning me around. It was Alaska. How she had got there was beyond me.
God, she was stunning. Ooooh, Baby I lo - -
She grabbed the strap of the bag tight, which brought me out of my trance. I tugged back. “This is ridiculous! Just give it up, for crying out loud!”
“No. That stone belongs to me!”
“It belongs to the museum!”
“Jinkx, you have no idea what you’re doing!”
“I do! I’m saving my career!”
The strap snapped. And the stone flew out from the bag, flying across the rocky plain. We ran for it. Alaska was slightly faster than me. The only way I could think to reach the stone before she did was to fling myself to the ground like a penguin sliding on ice. And it must have been my lucky day because it worked.
A piece of the stone had broken off. For fuck sake!
“Jinkx. The rock. Now!” Alaska commanded.
I turned, sitting on the ground now, and pointed my laser at her. “Alaska, honey, you know I can’t do that.”
“Stupid human. You need to give me the rock right now. You don’t understand - -”
Over Alaska’s shoulder, I could see the ship in the distance, heading in our direction. Damn, I really did run far.
I bolted for a rocky hill, awaiting the ship’s arrival. And of course, Alaska followed.
“Get back here!” She yelled.
I held the stone tight, shaking my head. Backing up, I felt my stomach tighten. My heel was on the edge of nothing. Glancing over my shoulder, I saw the long drop down and gulped nervously.
“Give me the stone!"
I looked around as Alaska lunged forward. I instinctively threw myself to the side.
And I watched as she fell from the cliff.
"Alaska!” I yelled.
I watched her fall, becoming smaller and smaller.
My mind was blank. I couldn’t even comprehend what was happening. “Fuck…fuck…fuck…”
Before her body could splatter to pieces, her body moved along the plain of land, and shot high up into the sky. “She can fly? Oh…OK. Good.”
She was like a glowy blur, contrasting the oceanarium blue of the sky. A glowy blur that was getting closer and closer. “Oh…OK. That’s not good.”
I looked at Big Debbie. And then to Alaska. And then, Big Debbie. And then, Alaska. A dizzying back and forth. Who would reach me first? I hoped it wouldn’t be the latter. Death didn’t sound too lovely, after all.
“Jinkx!” I heard Ivy yell. Alaska was close, but the ship was closer. I saw Ivy standing in the doorway, hanging on for dear life.
The speed of light that was Alaska was catching up. Fuck. The ship was so close. I was so gross from all the sweat, practically feeling the heat radiating off the approaching Celestial.
And in a matter of seconds, the ship was next to me. Ivy was reaching out a hand. I grabbed it, and my skin could have peeled off from the great force of being dragged into the ship.
I hit the ground and rolled, Ivy quickly shutting the door.
We had no time to celebrate our victory. It was time to get the fuck out of Celestia and keep the stone safe.
-_-_-_-
9872. Present Day
“Yeah, but you tell that story like it’s the wildest shit.”
I snap out of my daze. Shea is in the kitchen now, pouring herself a cup of coffee. I was so involved in telling Ivy my own account of the story, I didn’t realize our Captain entered the room.
“It was the wildest shit. The way Ivy pulled me onto the ship? It was like something out of an old action movie.” I insist.
Ivy’s not upset anymore. She laughed a few times during my storytelling. Good to know I can lighten the mood for her a bit. “Did Alyssa even notice the missing piece?” Ivy asks, tucking a leg under herself.
“No,” I answer. Like I said, Alyssa wasn’t the brightest. But in returning the stone to the museum, I learned she was also one harsh mother fucker. After the long journey back, she basically said, “Thanks for the stone, Jinkx. What you did is so admirable! But also, you’re fired. And one more thing. While ya’ll were gone, the Earth was destroyed. So, good luck trying to find a new home. Bye.”
Well, not exactly word for word. But it might as well have been. Alyssa fired me for “letting the aliens steal the stone,” which was totally stupid. I wanted to sue her for unfair dismissal. But at that stage, what was the point? I just gave the stone over and accepted defeat.
“What a bitch.” Ivy shakes her head.
“I know. She sounds like one of those bitches, you know the ones who take a vacation to a poor country, come back and throw away most of their wardrobe instead of actually doing something to help.” Shea observes. She’s not far off.
“Any other questions?” I ask.
“Yeah, one more. You have a crush on Alaska.” Ivy smirks.
“… That’s not a question.”
“OK, well, 'you have a crush on Alaska.’ True or false?"
"False. Are you nuts? As if.” I lie.
“I mean…” Shea squints her eyes, “You do talk about her some type of way.”
“Well…how do you know I’m not adding to the story? To make it more exciting?” I raise my brows. That’s dumb. That’s my worst lie. I’m terrible at lying, and I know they can see right through me. But they don’t question me further, and I am thankful.
Of course, I like Alaska. What’s not to like? It wasn’t just some plot device I threw into my story for exaggeration. Actually, none of it was exaggerated. Imagine if I told you right now that Alaska didn’t even fly, and she had indeed fallen to her death, and that was the last of it. Would it be considered a sad or happy ending?
She really did fly that day. But part of the story I left out was this; when she went soaring into the sky, that motherfucking Baby, I love your way song played in my head again.
-_-_-_-
I’m in my room now. It’s only 5pm, but my all-over-the-show body clock is saying 'nap time.’ I kick off my boots and fling them into the corner. And before I can even get comfy, in comes the cleaner bot, Tallulah. She’s like a slightly bigger version of Wall-E from the Oscar-winning film Wall-E . But instead of eyes, she has a screen for a face. Therefore she only speaks in symbols. Bless her.
“Hey, girl,” I murmur, feeling a yawn come on.
“ :) ” She says. She hovers over to my tossed boots, picks them up, and carefully places them under my bed. She takes almost a full minute to make sure they are perfectly symmetrical next to each other.
“Thank you, Tallulah. That’ll do.” I say, smiling. But she isn’t leaving. She starts searching the room for something else to clean. I really really want this nap, but from past experience, there ain’t no stopping her.
I think back to earlier in the day when the dark thoughts were getting the better of me. How I thought of ways to destroy her just to live out my intergalactic space domestic fantasy. I regret that immensely. The feeling of loneliness, while being surrounded by people, can sometimes fuck with your head.
“Tallulah.” I pipe up, grabbing her attention.
“ ? ”
“We love ya, gal.”
“ :D ”
I smile and lie down on the uncomfortable bed. You get used to a mattress like this when you’ve been using it for so long.
I close my eyes, hoping sleep will come quick.
“ Hmmm, hmmm hmm, hmmm…falling in love…” God, that karaoke song that Courtney was singing is stuck in my head now.
The ship shudders, and I huff. The light above my head isn’t any help, either. I can only turn it off when Tallulah leaves the room. But I’m guessing that won’t be for another while. Think I’ll just face the wall then.
My eyes are closed for all but 2 seconds when Tallulah taps me on the arm. “Tallulah, it’s nap time.”
She taps again, and so I sigh heavily, letting her know I’m serious. I turn around. And bolt upright.
I have no fucking idea how but Tallulah has somehow found the chipped off piece of Revitalization Grain. “ 😃 ”
“Give me that.” I hold out my hand.
“ 🍬 ”
“Tallulah, that is not candy. It’s very, very precious.”
“ >:( ”
“Look. I traveled so far to get that fucking stone just to lose my goddamn job. I earned that piece.”
“ :( ”
She really isn’t going to give this up. “OK. Fine. You can have it. But, you need to take good care of it. It’s not food. It’s not a toy. And if it falls into the wrong hands, the consequences could be vital.”
“ :D ”
“Glad you’re happy, hon’.”
The ship shakes again, only more violent this time. “Jesus Christ! If we’ve flown into a storm - -”
I nearly hit the wall as the ship shakes even more aggressively.
“ 👁👄👁💧"Tallulah’s screen flashes.
"Go to your room.”
“✅”
We both leave my room, Tallulah hovering down to the left and me towards the right.
I’m jogging my way to the control room, Roy popping out of his own room. “I swear to god. Somebody better be dead.”
The ship jolts. Because we were practically power walking with confidence, we fall the fuck over, right on our faces.
I groan in pain before responding to Roy’s statement. “Jesus, ain’t that a bit much?”
Entering the control room, everyone’s on their feet, rushing around, pressing all sorts of buttons, Shea giving a lot more commands than usual.
“OK. Who’s dead?” Roy asks.
“Do you have to?” I roll my eyes. He only smirks.
“Someone’s trying to get in,” Shea explains.
“Into the ship?” I raise a brow.
“No. Into my panties. Yes, of course the ship!” Shea snaps. Can’t blame her; it was a dumb question. My bad.
I approach Ivy, looking over her shoulder at the screen.
“This is crazy. What do you think it is?” I ask.
“I don’t know. But, from all the ruckus, I’m gonna guess and say it’s huge.”
My stomach is sinking to my ass. “Fuck…”
“It’s kind of exciting, to be honest.” Ivy laughs nervously.
“Which side are we talking, ladies?” Shea cuts off our conversation.
“The South East Side, Captain.” Phi Phi answers.
There’s banging. We all look to the North West side. Not the South East.
“Wow. Whatever it is, it’s fucking fast.” Ivy says.
“Shh. Listen.” Sasha holds a hand up.
There’s scratching sounds now. It’s almost unbearable to listen to like nails on a chalkboard.
We’re all still, just listening, too afraid to speak, unsure of what to do.
“What the fuck is going on??!!” Bob bellows as he enters the room, Milk and Kameron following behind.
“Shut the fuck up,” Shea swears through a harsh whisper.
The three engineers stop dead in their tracks, unsure of what is actually going on.
The scratching has stopped.
The ship is still.
And the silence is haunting.
Even though whatever is on the other side is probably a bloodthirsty creature, craving the taste of our insides; honestly, I’m fucking pumped.
I look to everyone else, but they clearly don’t feel the same. Phi Phi’s skin is pale like she’s looking death right in the eye.
There’s still this silence. And I want to break it. “Do you think - -”
The room is illuminated, and we all collectively flinch. And that feeling of familiarity settles in.
When the light has faded enough for us to look, what I fear (or low-key hope) to happen has happened.
In the middle of the room is a figure, the light slipping away from them to reveal their long blonde messy locks, their long arms, talons for nails…Oh, God…
Their head whips around to look at us. And that stupid Baby, I love your way song plays in my head as they flip their hair over their shoulder.
“Alaska!” I gasp.
She holds up her laser gun, aiming it at us. The others aim their own weapons right back at her.
“None of you could have opened the door? Seriously??” Alaska growls.
“Yeah, because inviting in whatever was fucking with our ship wouldn’t be a stupid move or anything.” Phi Phi sneers.
Alaska stands tall. “I mean, I did fucking knock.”
“Sorry, we didn’t hear it,” Ivy replies apologetically, Shea shooting her a look.
“As if we’d let you in, though.” Shea chimes.
“How rude.” Alaska comments.
I take in her appearance, which has significantly changed since I last saw her. The once strong, tall Celestial is now frail and seems to struggle to even hold herself up. Her once luscious hair is like straw, dry, and lifeless. And the glitter in her skin. It’s gone.
“Why are you even here?” Sasha demands.
“To take back what is mine.” Alaska pants. “Where’s the stone?”
“Jokes on you, girl. We don’t have it anymore.” Roy answered.
Alaska is breathing heavier now, blinking more than usual. “That’s impossible. I was drawn here. I can feel its energy."
The crew is quiet, and I feel like a fucking idiot. Of course, she’s talking about the broken piece that I gave to Tallulah. Maybe this was reality coming back to bite me in the ass that we can’t always have nice things.
No one is saying anything. Therefore, it’s my time to spew some bullshit. "It’s probably just the aura still left over on the ship. There’s nothing here for you.”
Alaska seethes, her body quivering. “So I saved up all my energy - fucking propelled myself across the universe - used whatever strength I had left…all for nothing?!”
I feel bad but won’t let it show. I just nod my head. “Yeah. You kinda did.”
Alaska lowers her weapon, eyes drawn to the ground. At first, she looks in disbelief. Then disappointed. And now her eyes aren’t lifting, her chest heaving.
“If you want, we can fly you back?” Ivy offers, shrugging her shoulders.
Instead of answering, Alaska drops to the ground, out cold.
“Jesus Christ!” Bob steps back.
I’m the only one who rushes to her. I try for a pulse. She’s still alive. A sigh of relief escapes my lips, and I look to the others. “Are you just gonna stand there all day? We need to help her.”
“Do we though?” Roy smirks.
“Yes. We do.” I snap. Looking back at the passed out Celestial, unsure of what to actually do, I poke her on the forehead. “Alaska…?”
She stirs.
Kameron kneels on the other side and scoops her up in his arms.
“Wow - wow - wow. What are you doing?” I demand.
Kameron raises a brow. “Helping?”
He turns to leave the room.
“Yeah, well, be careful with her!” I call after him. Kameron is harmless. But with those muscles and her fragile state, I’m afraid one wrong move, and she’ll snap in half.
“What the fuck is going on?” Phi Phi asks, standing up from her chair.
“I don’t know, but I feel so unprepared. What do we do?” Ivy says.
“Let’s all just calm down.” Shea raises her hands, trying to ward off the team’s anxieties. “Look, we don’t have the stone. We’re not gonna tell her where it is. Therefore, we’re useless to her.”
“More reason for her to kill us,” Willam noted.
“Not if we keep the peace and give her a ride home.” Shea counters.
Too many thoughts whirlwind in my brain right now. Maybe I should just come clean and tell them about the piece of Revitalization Grain. Or maybe not. I feel like the confrontation would be worse.
“I need a smoke.” I don’t even smoke.
“I need a drink.” Phi Phi adds.
“I need to stress masturbate.” Willam groans.
I’m ready to hurl.
-_-_-_-
2 hours later and I’m still on edge. Since Alaska broke in, I’ve had a long-ass shower, napped, ate 2 heaping bowls of cereal, and tried to find Tallulah. If anyone found out about the stone, my ass was grass.
The bot is not in her usual hangouts, which wracks my nerves up to 100—time to try looking through the whole ship.
I search high and low, searching each room I pass. I’m desperate to get this stone back.
“What are you looking for?” Milk passes me.
“Tallulah. I…spilled something”, I answer, the frustration apparent in my voice.
“Someone’s stressed.” Milk comments, continuing on in the opposite direction.
I bite my tongue, knowing full well that a snide remark is on the tip of it.
I find myself at the far end of the ship, where no one really visits too often. It’s just storage and the prison cell. Yes, we have one of those in the case that a criminal boards.
Finally checking said prison cell, I don’t find Tallulah. But I find Alaska. I can feel anger brewing in my chest, knowing this was what Kameron thought would be appropriate. Yes, she broke in, but she is not a threat.
She’s just lying there on the ground, and I feel saddened.
But she looks over her shoulder. I’m glad to see she’s awake.
I enter and stand before the glass barrier separating us. Alaska sits up and turns to me.
“Look what the cat dragged in,” she says.
“The Captain’s set sail. We’re taking you home. Should we expect an attack?” I ask.
Alaska blinks long and hard, looking away in frustration. “I don’t think so.”
“Good,” I say. I could just turn and leave. But my feet are stuck to the ground. I just look down at her, feeling the pity inside. But I must remain firm for my team.
“So, I’m really stuck in this cell for weeks with no entertainment?” Alaska combs a clawed hand through her long hair.
“Well, when you put it that way, I’ll willingly allow you some form of entertainment. You want a book?”
Alaska gags. “I’d prefer music.”
I move to the wall on the left; there’s a switch linked to the sound system that plays through the ship. Music used to play on repeat throughout the place. But when you hear the same songs over and over again, it becomes repetitive. I turn the volume, but not too loud as to disturb everyone else.
Some classical tune plays at random. It was never a favorite, but Alaska seems to not mind.
“You know there’s one moment I can’t ever stop thinking about. It involves you.” She drawls.
“Really?” I let myself smirk, sounding a bit too enthusiastic.
“When you let me fall from that cliff.”
“Oh. OK.”
“I could have died that day.” She continues. “But honestly, as I was falling, I thought… that’s alright… that’s OK. Everyone would know that I was legendary.”
“I would have caught you if my reflexes were better.” I try.
“No, you wouldn’t. Then I would have had the stone.” Alaska counters.
I don’t even try to argue that she’s wrong. I know I’d fucking blurt it out that I found her very appealing and would be pretty sad to know she died. Although, the thought of her reaction was also intriguing.
“You want to join me in here?” She suggests.
“Not terribly.” I lie.
“Are you scared of me?"
"No.”
“Well, I find it kind of rude with the barrier between us.”
She has a point. But the team would tear me a new one.
“Don’t worry. I won’t try to escape.” Alaska raises a brow. “I don’t exactly have the energy right now.”
To be fair, she still seems very sluggish. I give in, scan my key card, and enter the cell. Her eyes follow me as I sit down on the ground next to her.
“At least it’s not cold in here,” I comment.
“I’m pretty cold.” Alaska states.
You wanna cuddle? Nah, I can’t say that. “I’ll find you a heater later.”
“So, Jinkx-y. What have you all been at since we last met?” She’s intrigued.
“Nothing fascinating,” I reply. “Planet Earth was destroyed. We got nowhere to go. No missions. Nothing.”
Alaska looks disappointed with the answer.
“I’m sorry. Were you expecting something a bit more thrilling? Well, the last time something exciting ever happened, before you got here, was a very long time ago.” I continue.
“You have a really negative aura right now.” Alaska comments. “Maybe if you had a little more positivity, you’d find happiness.”
My brows connect. “Well, I’ve never been one of those 'fake a smile’ types. That’s a one way trip to a massive breakdown.”
“Who said anything about faking a smile?” Alaska tests. “If you get out of your head, stop focusing on how boring everything else, then you’ll see what the world has to offer.”
“What are you? A therapist?"
"See, this is what I’m talking about? The negativity. It’s making you more hostile. So different to the Jinkx I met back in the museum.” Alaska’s eyes squint as she analyzes me further. “And no, I’m not a
therapist. If you didn’t notice before, it’s just my people are a very positive bunch. Give us a Tsunami; we’ll make a water slide out of it. Give us a house fire; we’ll toast marshmallows and have one hell of a party.”
I know I could never reach that level of chill. But I find it admirable.
“Jinkx, how old are you?” Alaska asks.
The question catches me off guard, but I answer anyway. “33 years old.”
“Wow. You’re like…way younger than I thought you’d be.” Alaska’s brows raise in surprise.
“Are you saying I look old?"
"I was going to guess late 40’s.”
“Oh, wow. Thanks.” The sudden urge to leave and go find some more wine is strong. Actually, maybe that’s what has clearly aged me.
“Late '40s is still young, girl. But early 30’s. That’s really, really young. Practically still a child.” Alaska comments.
“You have a really warped concept of age,” I note. “How old are you then? You gotta be younger than me, at least.”
“Far from it. I’m actually 2099 years of age. Just about to get into my 2100’s."
I’m shocked. Only then, when she states her age, do I remember that Celestials live for a very, very, very long time. But still. I never imagined she’d be 2 millenniums old.
"I forgot you humans only have less than 100 years.” Alaska plays with her hair again. “Which is why I find it sad you’re just sitting here wasting what remaining time you have. You have so much to experience. A lot to learn. You just gotta open your eyes.”
“Huh, you’re not wrong.” I click my tongue. “OK, so let me know more about you."
Alaska looks flattered.
"Why the name 'Alaska’? I’m guessing your parents had an interest in Earth?”
“I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. Just because I like you.” Alaska says coyly, making me blush. “It’s not my real name.”
“Oh, cool. What is your real name then?” I lean forward, enthusiastically.
“I’d rather not say.”
“OK.” I don’t press her. “Does anyone know your real name?” I don’t want to feel left out.
“Of course they do. But for specific and appropriate reasons. I’d just much rather be referred to as Alaska. And what about you? Why Jinkx with a 'k.’” Alaska lies on her side, propping her head up with a hand.
“I don’t know. My Mom liked it, I guess.” I also lie on my side, and I just smile at her.
“Jinkx Jenner fan?” Alaska asked.
I shook my head. “I have no clue. Honestly, she wasn’t very present for my childhood. I never had the chance to find out.” I see the sorrowful look on her face. And I regret taking the conversation to a dark place. Before she can ask about the rest of my family, I take a turn and ask a question. “So like…are you broke or something? I’m guessing that’s why you wanted the stone so bad.” I smirk.
“What do you mean?” Alaska’s brow raises.
“The marquee. You were charging people to see the stone.”
“Oh, that . I guess that was just a perk. Not really different from people paying to see it in the museum.” Alaska explains, her smile slowly fading. “But no, that’s not the real reason.”
With a sigh, she sits up again, leaning her back against the wall. Her chest heaves, eyes looking upward. It’s like she’s avoiding me, or the topic. I’m unsure of which one.
“What’s wrong?” I ask.
“It's…” she pauses like she’s trying to find words. And then she sighs through her nostrils. “It doesn’t matter.”
Concern takes me over. I sit up and move towards the wall beside her. “Hey, it’s OK. You can say it. It’s just me.” I say as if she’s known me for years. I don’t know why I said it. I guess I just really want her to trust me.
Alaska avoids my eyes. “I really can’t. It could be dangerous for Glamtron.”
“Glamtron?"
"Yes, my planet.”
“You mean Celestia?”
“No. Glamtron.”
“…”
“…”
“Alaska, you’re from Celestia.”
“No, it’s called Glamtron.”
“Says who?”
“I do. I renamed it.”
My head cocks to the side. “ You renamed it?”
“Yes. I do have the power and the authority to do that, after all."
My eyes widen. "Wait a minute. Are you saying…”
“Yes, I am the Queen. Alaska Thunderfuck from the planet Glamtron.” She says so proudly. “So, yes. I really did rename it to Glamtron.”
I don’t even care about the name change any more. I’m just…beyond shocked. Here, I am; Jinkx Monsoon, a space nerd, sitting with royalty.
"Fuck. I just… don’t know how to act all of a sudden.” I say.
“Well, I’m not looking very Queenly right now. Just see me as Alaska from the exhibit for now."
"I know, but… I’ve studied Celes - -” Alaska shoots me a look, “Glamtron before. There’s never been any mention of an Alaska before. And you’ve been alive for so long. How…” I trail off, not knowing how to even finish my statement.
“Because Alaska isn’t my real name.” She says as if I should have remembered that. I thought she would have been happy to know I forgot.
“Well.” I pause. “I hate to ask, but what do they refer to you as?”
She licks her teeth like she’s slightly frustrated. “OK. Fine. But you gotta promise to always call me Alaska.”
“Cross my heart.” I place a hand over my heart to seal the deal.
“OK.” She looks to the door as if afraid anyone will just wander in. Then she looks at me, leans in close, and whispers, “My name is actually Thriks.”
My first thought is, 'Oh, yikes. That is kinda awful.’ But now I’m thinking back to my reading. And I am definitely familiar. The Queen Thriks was known as a wild party animal, yet a loving and caring mother-like figure. She was always so strong for her people and went out of her way for them, making sure everyone was in high spirits. Because of her loving nature, she was to go down in history as one of the most adored Queens of Celestia.
“I have read about you,” I say quietly.
“And you’re little history books and articles. Do they still call it Celestia?” Alaska stretches the ’s’ in Celestia out.
“Uh, huh.”
“If I was a different person, I’d sue."
But we’re getting off track. I need answers. "Well…I could write about you? I’d write you as Alaska . I’d call it Glamtron . I’d make everything right if you help me."
Alaska bats her lashes. "You’d do that for me?”
“Yes!” I exclaim, grabbing her hand.
“Hmmm…” she brings a finger to her mouth, thinking, “I can’t wait for the part where I robbed the museum. I’m sure there will be some bitterness in those words.”
She’s kind of right. Yeah, I’m having a good time talking with her. But she did kind of cost me my job. I purse my lips as the classical song ends, transitioning to something from the 1980s.
“Alaska, why did you take the stone?” I ask again.
She’s silent again, pretending to be distracted by the catchy Madonna music.
“Alaska, I need to know if I’m going to write your story."
She stops bobbing her head, huffing put through her nostrils. "Jinkx, I really can’t.”
“Why not? You told me your name.”
“Because that’s different.”
“How?”
“Because it’s dangerous.”
“Why?” My tone becomes more demanding.
“Because it just is,” Alaska replies, her tone the same.
“For who? Us? Are we in trouble?”
“No! For my people.”
“So…you don’t trust me?” I ask in an accusing manner. Seems a bit emotional blackmail-ish, but I’m desperate to know.
“I do trust you, Jinkx. But I can’t say the same for your team.” She says with venom.
“My team are good people!” I say. “They have never caused any harm.”
“They terrified my people that day.” Alaska countered. I figure she’s talking about the day we arrived in Celestia.
“And how is that any different to the night of the exhibit?"
"Because unlike you all, we had a good reason.”
“And that is?”
“Jinkx, you’re really really starting to piss me off.”
“Don’t ignore the question. What am I going to do? Go out and tell my big bad teammates? Why would I do that if I have no idea what the consequences are?”
“Because we’re vulnerable, Jinkx!” Alaska shouts. Her volume causes me to shrink away. She’s gritted her teeth, kneeling on her knees and towering over me now. I’m actually scared.
“Look at me!” She presses her hands against her chest. “I’m fucking dying! My planet is dying. My people are dying!”
In my moment of shock, as Alaska looks down on me, pieces of the puzzle come together in my head.
Thriks; the loving Queen who went out of her way for her people.
The attack on the museum.
The Revitalization Grain.
The one thing that brought restoration and reincarnation.
“You wanna save them,” I speak through a whisper.
With a sigh, Alaska sinks back to the ground. Her head lowers, blonde hair covering her face.
“Jinkx, the stone is of Glamtron origin. It was lost 300 years ago, in the middle of the war with the Holoxyans. For so long, we were wasting away, trying to build up our own energy to keep ourselves alive. And from just laying around, we were just dying anyway. And I had no idea what to do. I didn’t know how to save them.” Alaska’s voice cracks. “For years, I had to watch as many gave what little energy they had left to my team and me. Just so we could go find the stone.”
I’m horrified as realization hits; I’ve brought doom to an entire planet.
“Please, I don’t want anyone other than us to know,” Alaska states firmly. “Glamtron has no defense. If someone knows how vulnerable we are, it makes us a prime target for invasion. The Holoxyans. They will attack.”
I move close to her again. I resist the urge to throw my arms around her, now aware of literally how fragile she is. I take her hand graciously; my own eyes must be glistening. “Alaska, I’m so sorry.”
She puts her other hand on top of mine. “I do trust you, Jinkx. I’m just…terrified.”
“I know. I know.” I say quietly.
Alaska hasn’t shed any tears. They were right when they said Thriks was a strong bitch. I held back my own tears, fearing it would be selfish.
“So, no. It’s not because I’m broke.” Alaska comments. And I nervous laugh. She laughs too. “You promise this stays between us?” She looks me in the eye.
Is it inappropriate to say at this moment I’m just smitten by the dark irises? “I promise.” I squeeze her hands reassuringly.
“Great.” She nods. And she leans forward, kissing me on the cheek.
I could fucking melt. The high must be kicking in again because the lights are dimming, there’s some sort of pink aura emerging, the music is louder, and Alaska feels warm.
She pulls away. I expect a smile. But she’s looking around her as if she’s experiencing the same thing.
“Alaska, look.” I point to her wrist. She looks just in time to see something glitter under her skin, like sparkly pink blood flowing through her veins.
She’s looking at me now like something has just hit her in the head like a brick. I don’t know what, so I just stare back in confusion. “What’s - -”
I’m cut off as she grabs my face.
And she kisses me again.
On the lips.
Suddenly, I know what pink glitter tastes like, even though I’m pretty sure there is no taste. Her kiss is so gentle, which I do not expect from her. She’s lifted a hand to my cheek, stroking a nail along my skin. And I hope this is a sign she’s not just in it for some nice colors floating around the air. I feel this spark, and it will kill me if she doesn’t feel it too. Upon having this thought, I wrap my arms around her tiny waist. The butterflies in my stomach are going wild, my heart is pounding so hard, yet all I can focus on is the soft feel of her lips.
She pulls away, and I almost pull her back in. But I’m taken aback by the room now . Like, am I tripping right now, or are there really purple fireflies floating around?
Alaska’s looking around in awe as well. I guess it’s not the cosmic-high feeling from her kiss.
“Well, that’s never happened before.” Alaska looks back to me with a smirk. The holographic glitter has resurfaced, decorating the sides of her face.
And her hair, almost pale white, longer and thicker. I can’t help but run my fingers through it. Never has hair felt silkier to me.
She’s glancing down at my hand, still playing with her locks. “I feel…alive again.” She breathes out a laugh, pulling away from me, admiring the healthy color of her skin, the glittery fluid coursing through her.
I look away, noting how the floaty lights remain. But the hit is gone. So this is real. There really are tiny glowy orbs floating around us.
"Wow. What is this song?” Alaska asks, moving her body to the rhythm of the music. The 1980s song has long ended. Instead, the song Courtney was singing earlier plays.
“I’ll have to find that out for you. You’d think I’d know it. We’ve heard it so many damn times now. It’s kind of annoying.” I laugh.
“Why do you think that?"
"It’s just…too depressing, I guess. I mean, listen to the words.”
“This is what I’m talking about. Don’t focus on what’s black and white. Listen to the music.” Alaska turns to face me, her long arms rippling to the tune.
I don’t want to be an annoying son of a gun and ruin the tender moment for us, so I take her advice and really listen to the music.
“Not anyone, you’re the one, more than fun, you’re the Sanctuary,
'Cause what you want is what I want, Sincerity.”
My eyes are closed, and my body is swaying. And I’m feeling it. Like the music is flowing through me. “Hey. I think you’re right.”
“See?” I open my eyes to see her move toward me. She takes my hands in hers. And we spin in a slow circle.
“Souls that dream alone lie awake, I’ll give you something so real.”
As the chorus kicks in, the dance has picked up a pace. I don’t even know what kind of dancing this is. Let’s say a mix of slow dancing and ballroom. And I laugh when she spins me around. I try to return the gesture, but she’s too tall, and I nearly knock her in the face. I’m embarrassed for a few seconds, but she’s laughing. And it makes me feel less like an idiot.
I can’t keep up this pace; I’m falling so hard right now. I slow myself down, hoping she gets the hint.
“Hold me oh so close, 'cause you’ll never know just how long our lives will be.”
I wrap my arms around the small of her back, pulling her to me. I can see the small floaty lights reflecting in her dark eyes. And now it’s my turn to kiss her. I’m really, really falling hard.
I could stay like this forever, rocking side to side, just kissing Alaska. But reality has to come back and creep into my brain, doesn’t it?
I know this won’t last. We’ll eventually have to part when we leave her back to her dying planet, and my team and I will continue on wasting away.
I stop kissing her to get another look at those eyes, and she lays her head on my shoulder. We continue to sway side to side. And the thought of letting go is making all kinds of negative emotions surface. Am I glad for this moment? Oh, absolutely. If she hadn’t broken in, I’d still be in my room, either sleeping or waiting for Tallulah to finish cleaning.
“Wait…” I say.
“What is it?” Alaska speaks into the crook of my neck.
“I…” I pause, “OK, don’t get mad. But I kinda lied to you.” She lifts her head at this. “You were right about sensing the stone. The truth is I have a piece.”
Her eyes widen. “I knew I felt it.”
“It’s small. But it’ll give you more strength.” I suggest with raised brows.
“No. I have enough right now. I don’t know how but…you ignite something in me, I guess. As for the stone, I know a few people back home who could use it more.” Alaska suggested.
“Well, good. Wait here.” I give her a small kiss. “I’ll be back in a second.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t be going anywhere.” She calls as I leave the cell.
I’m too buzzed to search every damn room. I just search for the nearest human who will provide me with answers. I find two in the security room. Ivy and Courtney.
“Which one of you whores have seen Tallulah?” I ask, peaking my head in.
“Not me.” Courtney answers. She’s got a smirk on her face, and I know somethings up.
“Me neither. But we’ll tell you what we did see.” Ivy gestures to the 5th screen, showing Alaska still dancing around in her cell.
My eyes widen. “You were spying on us?”
“Not our intention. We thought we’d keep an eye on things in case something happened.” Ivy then laughs. “And I guess it did.”
The shame takes me over, and my face flushes with shame and embarrassment. “Oh, for God’s sake.”
“I actually think it’s adorable. Very Romeo and Juliet.” Courtney coos.
I roll my eyes. This is all incredibly immature. But I know they’re not going to just let it go. “OK, kids. I’ll let you have your fun. But it stays between us. Anyway, where’s Tallulah?”
“We told you. We don’t know.” Courtney replies. “Try her closet.”
“OK.” I turn to leave, not before turning and pointing at the two. “Remember; it stays between us 3.”
“You got it, girl.” Ivy smirks.
I waste no more time with them and rush to the cleaning room, which just so happens to be at the end of this corridor, just around the corner. My pace is so quick, I almost trip.
Upon getting to the door, I’m thankful to find Tallulah is here but shut down. “Tallulah?"
No response. I clap my hands 2 times as if it’ll bring her to life. It’s never worked before, so I don’t even know why I tried.
When she doesn’t power up, I roll my eyes, grabbing a bottle of disinfectant from the shelf and dropping it on the ground.
Tallulah is up and running in a matter of seconds.
"No. Stop.” I move forward to stop her from going to the bottle. Tallulah, I have a huge favor to ask.”
“ :0 ? ”
“You remember that glowy thing I gave to you?”
“👍”
“Good. Where is it?”
A box on her build opens, revealing the chipped off piece of Revitalization Grain. But I can’t just take it.
“Well, that’s good that you haven’t lost it. Can I have it back, please?”
“ :( ”
“OK, it’s not that I want it. I need it.”
“ >:( ”
I’m serious. There’s no time to argue.“
” 🤬💢🖕🗣🔫🚫✖❗ “
I lick my teeth beneath my pursed lips, realizing this isn’t going to be as easy as it seemed.
"Look, Tallulah, I know you like it. It’s pretty. It’s glowy. I get it.” I soften my tone. “But there are people out there who are dying. A lot of people. But this tiny little stone? It can help them get better. If you give it back to me, you’re saving the lives of so many. You could be a hero.” My brows raise.
“…”
Wow, talk about being left on read.
“ 🆗️ ”
“Yes. Jesus Christ! Thank you!” I quickly hug her. She hands me the small stone, and I pat her on the head. “You’re a lifesaver. Literally.”
“ 🤺 ”
Not sure what she meant by that one, but I leave her to it. I hold the small rock tight in my hand, seeing its glow seep through the gaps in my fingers. And I can’t believe that there’s a chance we can help Alaska save Glamtron. Even if I can’t be with her, I would feel better knowing everything is better back on her planet.
I pass the kitchen and stop dead in my tracks. Shea’s all alone, just staring out at the window. Fuck. I can feel it. The dread creeping up.
“Captain,” I address her. It feels weird calling her that. She’s just been 'Shea’ for a long time now. But with the new task, I guess it’s only appropriate.
She looks away from the window, taken by surprise. “Jinkx, you scared me.” She sniffs, quickly wiping at her eyes. Fuck, this isn’t good.
I walk into the room. “You feeling OK?”
She sighs. “Yeah, I guess I will be.”
She goes back to looking out the window. Standing next to her, I follow her gaze. And I immediately recognize the area.
Large masses of rock float around in the distance. Remains of the Earth.
I purse my lips for a moment, trying to make sense of it. I almost feel confused by what I’m looking at. I know what happened, but it still feels…unfamiliar. “You’d think someone would clean this mess up,” I say.
“No. This is a graveyard, Jinkx. It has to stay.” Shea states.
“Fair enough.”
We continue to stare, like we’re in some sort of trance, watching the pieces float around.
“Wanna hear something funny?” Shea asks, giving me a sad smile.
The mournful aura is weighing down on both of us. Something funny right now would be great. “Yeah, of course.”
“As soon as she broke in, I knew it was our chance—a new purpose. Finally, for the first time in a long, long time, we get to do our thing. And I was…so fucking excited. I couldn’t fucking wait.” She laughs.
I don’t find it funny, but her happiness is making me happy.
But her smile drops. And I know now when she said if I wanted to hear something funny, it wasn’t going to be funny at all.
“But then what? What happens after we leave Celestia?” She asks, looking at me with wet eyes.
Nothing happens. We go back to the same old shit and hope that something good happens.
Shea must’ve been holding back a sob because she chokes, grabbing my attention. She covers her mouth as if it will hold back the other ones.
“Hey, it’ll be fine.” I grab her free hand.
But my words are meaningless. I don’t know if it will be OK or not. So I hug her hoping it’ll help some.
She whispers in my ear, “I just want my family.”
I’m devastated. I really am the lucky one. Who knew being abandoned by my own mother at such a young age could be such a blessing? Because this anguish Shea is expressing? It’s soul-destroying.
She cries into my shoulder some more, and I run my thumb along the back of her shoulder. I can’t even tell her it’s alright. Because I know it won’t be.
I look at the stone in my hand, still hugging Shea. If only this stupid glowy thing could restore the life of this ship. If only it brought back the good times, the adventure, the danger.
I continue to stare at the stone. And I have no idea why, but something I thought about earlier resurfaces.
The loving Queen who went out of her way for her people.
“Fuck.” I whisper.
“I’m sorry.” Shea sniffles, lifting her head. She dabs her eyes with her pinky.
“It’s not you. It’s - -” I begin. But I fail to find words to explain my thought process.
All I can say is I know what I need to do now.
I look at my Captain for what will probably be the last time. “Shea, when the time is right, come find me.”
“What?”
“You’ll know what I mean.”
I pull away from her and go to leave the room, her voice calling after me. But I don’t listen. I need to do this.
-_-_-_-
Alaska stands as I enter the room. I pull the stone from my pocket, and she’s already drawn.
“Fuck, you weren’t kidding when you - -”
I cut her off with a kiss, something to give her more energy. I don’t know how much she’ll need to make it to the escape pod, but hopefully, this should do it.
I pull away. “Change of plan, hon’. You wanna rob the museum?”
“What?” Her brows cross.
“I’m gonna make things right - I’m gonna get the Revitalization Grain back, we’re gonna take it back to Glamtron. And I don’t care if that makes me some sort of intergalactic space villain. When the time comes, we’re gonna fight for your planet.” I babble, and only when I finish do I realize how nuts I sound.
Alaska’s blinking, as if struggling to comprehend everything I just said. “Jinkx, you know the stone? You know it’s called the Glitter Bomb, right? And before you argue, yes, I named it that.”
I roll my eyes, adoring her dorky side. And I hand over the piece of the stone. If we’re getting the glitter bomb - as she calls it- she might as well have this piece now.
As soon as it’s in her hand, she’s glowing. It’s breathtaking.
She’s breathtaking.
“Come on. We need to get to an escape pod quick.” I take her hand.
“No need. I say we take the quicker way.”
“And that is?”
She wraps her long arms around my waist. “You better hang tight.”
And in a matter of seconds, light envelopes us. And the atmosphere changes. We’re outside. If it wasn’t for my trust in her, I’d panic at the thought of suffocating. But I can breathe, and I know it’s one of her quirks.
We’re blasting at the speed of light, passing many planets and stars that would take weeks to pass. And I wonder if people on other planets are looking up at us right now, thinking we’re a shooting star and making wishes.
Speaking of wishes, I kind of wish I could see what’s happening back at the ship. I can just picture it. The sight of Alaska and I whooping by the windows, Shea realizing what’s going on, giving commands and ordering everyone to get a move on. Ivy trying to figure out where we went, giving her plenty of searching to do. Milk, Kameron, and Bob working on kicking the ship back into action. Everyone just running around, trying to shake the energy back into themselves.
'Cause they have a new purpose now. I am their enemy. And that couldn’t make me happier. Because I know they’ll be thankful for giving this to them, something we all had been waiting for.
But what makes me happier, more than anything, is that I’m here with Alaska. We’re going to save Glamtron, the planet formally known as Celestia. We’re going to protect it at all costs.
And, most importantly, I’m going to be with her for the rest of my life.

Hello! For the meta asks, would you do 1, 5, 8, and 17?
you did not come to play, lilac! thanks for all these questions! <3
1. Tell us about your current project(s)  –   what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?
oh lord. that’s a... question. i have. so many current projects, i don’t even know where to start. this is gonna be long so please bear with me lol i’ll probably give more detail for some fics over others, and i’ll only go over fics I’ve got documents for because otherwise we’d be here forever.
The Art of Love: so this one is obvious because it’s been in progress for the last 2ish years? no i think it’s three now. I won’t go into detail with this because the fic is roughly halfway through, so there’s plenty of content for that up! I’d say the progress with that fic is actually going really well, though. Unlike Alliance, which took 8 years--five years of writing, three of editing--TAoL has been up for way less time, and is already about to hit the halfway mark! I really need to get back to it, tbh because it’s been way too long since my last update.
Honor Bound (sequel to Alliance): so this is.... kind of on pause. I’ve got the first three chapters written, but my focus has been more on TAoL when it comes to my more complicated, long running stories, so HB has taken a backseat. I think I won’t get back to working on the Allied Nations Saga until after TAoL is done, in all honesty.
Find Me: this is my HS AU, which has been on the back burner forever and I feel terrible because I think it may honestly be my most popular fic. Unfortunately, AUs/slice of life stuff is difficult for me because I’m more interested in politics, so I lost momentum on this fic. It is about halfway done. I have a good chunk of chapter six written, but not enough that I could say I’m close to finishing it.
It Eats Your Heart: obviously I just started this one, and it’s a horror fic. I’ve really gotta sit down and do some major plotting on it because I only have some very vague ideas currently.
Pearl-Filled Lungs: this is one of like three ningyo AUs I have--the other are pirate/ningyo AUs (and ones actually a selkie not a ningyo). I started it last year for the GaaLee fest, and it’s been sitting unfinished for far too long. I finally sat down recently and plotted the whole thing out, so I’m hoping to get back to working on it soon! It’s only 5 chapters in total, so I don’t think it’ll take me super long to get through once I sit down and do it.
Who Dares to Love Forever: This is a working title, and I may change it. This is a fic idea I’ve had for a couple years, inspired by the song Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen. This particular fic is a vehicle for my sage mode!rock lee headcanon, and explores just how effective Chiyo giving Gaara her life would have been given she was an old biddy. So the idea for this fic is that Gaara’s running out of time because Chiyo only had so much to offer.
Absolution: this is another fic that I’ve had on the back burner for years. it was initially inspired by art by @brianadoesotherjunk but quickly spiraled into something much bigger because of course it did. This particular fic is one I’m extremely excited about. I need to go back over the first part, because I feel like it’s not quite right, but I do technically have the first part done. This fic follows Gaara struggling with bouts of narcolepsy that trigger nightmares induced by trauma and guilt from his childhood. These nightmares are incredibly dangerous for obvious reasons, but even more so because Temari’s baby is on the way. Temari and Shikamaru are married, living in the Kazekage estate, and with their baby coming and both needing/wanting to get back to work, they also need a nanny. Unbeknownst to Gaara, the year prior to the events of the fic, Maito Gai died, succumbing to the 8th Gate finally, and Lee has since been spiraling. His depression has become so self-destructive that he’s been taken off active duty. Shikamaru, along with the rest of the Konoha 12 (minus Neji and Sasuke), get together and discuss what to do. Tenten believes that Lee being a nanny would be the perfect thing. And so Rock Lee is sent to Suna, hired by Shikamaru and Temari as their live-in nanny...
We Need Not Be Yellow Tulips in a Garden of Gardenia’s, Yet We Go the Way of the Red Camellia: true to form, I decided that a hanahaki fic was something I had to do, and I was not going to pass up the chance at being as Extra As Possible with the flowery language, ergo the ridiculous title. I’ve gotten part way through the first chapter of this fic, but the whole thing is roughly plotted out and each chapter title is just as extra as the whole fic’s title.
Thirteen Strokes: so this is a fic I have--once again--had on my mind for ages, and--once again, because I am nothing if not a caricature of myself--inspired by a Florence+the Machine song, All This and Heaven Too. I started writing this the other night, as I wanna use it for GaaLee bingo. It’ll be 13 chapters, as per the 13 strokes that it takes to make the character for love, ai, in Japanese. The fic is from Gaara’s PoV, and follows his journey with and his relationship to love, with lots of worldbuilding and politics because it wouldn’t be an Eeri Original without those things.
Scarification: this is another idea for bingo based around the prompt shinshoubyou, which is a fictional disease where your emotions cause physical marks on you
Fill in the [  ]: another bingo idea, based around the prompt bouaishoukoigun, the fictional disease where you forget the person you love if it’s unrequited.
The Eagle’s Augury: an idea that allows me to play around with more worldbuilding and focus on Karura. In this fic, the curse (mentioned briefly on the Naruto wikia) that has led to every single Kazekage being assassinated, is coming for Gaara, and Karura is trying to warn him from beyond the grave. At the same time, Temari and Shikamaru’s marriage is approaching, and their ceremony is being held in Suna, with all the fan fair a marriage for someone from the Kazekage line should see. Again, another fic inspired by Miss Florence+the Machine, the song is Mother
Pomegranate Sun: this is a fic that I am... so excited about. Another fic that was originally inspired by a Queen song, Under Pressure, and has of course taken on a life of its own. This fic, I am actually going to be writing with @ghoste-catte! It’s an arranged marriage trope, and I’m super pumped for it! We’ve only got a little bit started, and it has obviously not taken priority for either of us since we both have a lot of fics on our plates.
The Ballad of the Dragon and the Phoenix: this is a fic I’m really excited but is going to take a LOT of research to get off the ground. I had this idea sometime last year, I wanna say? This fic is another self-indulgent headcanon about Lee’s origins, his family, etc. This fic starts when Gaara shows up on Lee’s doorstep, asking him to accompany him to another country for reasons Lee cannot understand. Gaara has been in talks with Phoenix Kingdom, hoping to forge a new relationship only to find that the Emperor wants to use shinobi for militaristic purposes. Lee doesn’t understand what help he could possibly offer the Kazekage, but he can’t very well turn him down.
okay, i’m gonna stop there. these are the ones I have titles and documents for, and honestly that’s probably way more than you wanted to know about lol
5. What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?
Despite the fact that most of my fics end up from Gaara’s PoV, I actually identify with Lee the most!
8. Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?
Yes! Which is hard to find, tbh, because I am a sucker for political dramas with slow burn romances, but I don’t see a lot of that in the GaaLee fandom. I’m not as into like slice of life or short stories where the characters get together quick, I’m really not into established relationship fics unless it’s a sequel, so I tend to avoid those. I like AUs but it really depends on the AU, because I ultimately prefer the canon and I love seeing the way people write the shinobi world and all its rules and cultures and things. I’m just a big fan of worldbuilding, politics, and slow slow burns. Not this 25k SLOW BURN! crap because that is NOT a slow burn. I wanna see a fic that’s 200k words in and they still haven’t even figured out they’re in love! I like stories I can really sink my teeth into, ya know?
17. Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?
Oh gosh. I generally don’t think too much about it except like hoping people don’t think I’m like a stuck up asshole because of how I talk about my writing, writing in general, my hcs, etc. I mean, obviously I don’t expect everyone in this fandom to like me--and there are ppl I’ve gone out of my way to be vocally against because they do nasty shit--but largely I feel like I come across as too intense, so even the general population of GaaLee fans that I do want to interact with I’m always a lil nervous that people secretly don’t like me and basically are like “oh god this bitch again” when they see me in the tags. But I just get really excited and invested in my ideas, and honestly for the longest time this fandom was SO small and there weren’t a lot of people putting out content regularly so it was like a handful of us so I think it made me more emphatic about GaaLee lol I think I always like assume people aren’t as excited about my writing as I am or that people are like “too much politic, i need more romance”.
I’m always surprised when people really love my AUs, like Kado or Find Me have had such fantastic reception, and it’s like people just eat that shit up so much. And then I look at like Alliance or Art of Love and get kind of confused because I think by comparison those are more interesting and more developed than my AUs. I put a shit ton of work into everything I write, especially anything that requires research, so it’s not to say that I do less work per say, just that I feel like TAoL and things like it are more interesting and more developed, and the relationship feels.... somehow more to me there than in an AU.
a lot of my motivation really just comes from the lack of content this fandom had for so many years, and the fact that Naruto could have been a much more interesting series and I love worldbuilding so much. I think my motivation for each fic is different though. Like Alliance was started because I wanted to write something different from what was mainly in the fandom at the time because mind you I started that in 2010. But my motivation for TAoL is more wanting to tell a beautiful story with a complex narrative that looks at the failings of the shinobi world. Whereas like any slice of life fic is really just meant to be a fun break. And sometimes I write something literally just because I wanted to fulfill that trope for the GaaLee fandom--again, a lot of my ideas have been sitting for years and years and years (TAoL was an idea I had literally right after starting Alliance, but I didn’t get to it until 2017), so a lot of ideas that are old are because at the time that trope hadn’t been fulfilled yet in the fandom though that’s changing a lot with the recent GaaLee Renaissance of the last couple years.

carrying on the legacy - one shot
Title: Carrying on the Legacy  Fandom: MCU  Pairing: Peter Parker & Tony Stark (IronDad/SpiderSon) Rating: General (Feels - Minor Angst - Fluff)  Word Count: ~4580
Summary: Peter agrees to do something very special for Morgan, since her father couldn’t be there for her to do it himself.
A/N: Someone on Discord suggested that maybe Peter would be there for all of Morgan important life events, including her high school graduation and her wedding day. This can be seen as part 2 of this fic. :) Please enjoy!
For @borkistumblin

Peter looked around his room, frantically trying to find something that he knew he had, but it appeared that he was mistaken. He opened dresser drawers, his bedroom closet, his hallways closet, his linen closet - even the fridge to see if maybe he had accidentally put the item he was looking for in there, but came up short. Crap. He didn’t have much time, but he wasn’t going to leave until he found it. His phone began buzzing, which amped up the anxiety he was already feeling to an eleven. “I know!” He shouted, speaking out loud.
“Did you need some assistance, Peter?” Friday’s voice came through loud and clear, Peter sighing as he had forgotten the AI would automatically answer him. He’d been living here for what - three years now, and tended to forget more often than he should. “I’d be happy to help you.”
“No, Friday - I’m okay.” He sighed, then snapped his fingers. “Actually, maybe you can help me. Did I happen to tell you where I was going to put an item for Morgan?”
“The one that you wanted to give to her when either Pepper passed on, or if she was getting married?”
“Yep.” Peter nodded his head, happy that his past self had taken precautions of this very scenario he was currently experiencing. “Can you tell me where I can find it, please?”
“It’s in the cupboard next to the laundry room. Top shelf, in the back.”
He did a little dance, happy that he now had an exact location, even though he could have sworn he’d gone there and checked earlier. But maybe he had missed it. Stranger things had happened. He walked through the penthouse that used to belong to both Pepper and Tony prior to the arrival of Morgan, and went over to the laundry room.
After Tony had died, the world had moved on, as it tended to do but he swore that he wasn’t going to not be around for Morgan. Although he was only twelve years older than her, he wasn’t going to let her grow up without knowing more about her father, and the stuff that he did to make sure that she was safe. Pepper had told him that he didn’t have to, but he wouldn’t listen. They were his family - the family he wished he could have really spent time with, but Thanos had seen to taking that away from him. Both with the first, and then second snap. After college, he’d traveled the world and then settled into a role at Stark Industries because it felt right. He didn’t want to waste his mind at any other company except the one that was his mentor. He wanted to make Tony proud, and while he’s sure that Tony wouldn’t care if he got a job at a different leading tech company, he would have been happy that Peter wanted to follow him in his footsteps.
Moving into the tower where Tony used to live with Pepper had taken some getting used to. Pepper had told him after the funeral that he could stay there as often as he wanted, because it’s what Tony would have wanted for him. They’d discussed it often prior to the second showdown. Tony had been adamant with Pepper that if anything should happen to him, that he was to get it. After starting work at SI, he had kept an apartment in Queens because he really couldn’t justify living in the same building that he worked in, but as his nights started to get later and later while he got into the zone of working - almost like how Tony was when he got inspiration for new technology - he’d started to stay in the penthouse to get a few hours of sleep. And then, it just made more sense for him to move in, which he did with some help from Ned, who was thankfully still around keeping him grounded.
His phone began to buzz again in his pocket. “What?” He yelled into it, not looking at who was calling.
“Peter?” Pepper’s voice came through loud and clear, sounding somewhat startled. “Are you on your way?”
Shit. “Almost, Pepper.” He flung open the cupboard door and looked up at the top shelf. “Aha!” Peter exclaimed, happy to have found what he was looking for. “Is Morgan waiting for me?”
“We’re all waiting for you.” Peter pulled the box down and put it into his pocket. “You know that the ceremony starts in thirty minutes.”
“I know, I know.” He went to his bedroom and grabbed his tux jacket off of his bed, putting it on. He looked in the full length mirror, his thirty-seven year old self staring back at him. He had a little bit of grey coming in along his temples, but nothing too serious yet. His Aunt had always told him he took after his father more than his mother, but having not grown up with either of them, he honestly didn’t know if it was true. He fixed the tie at his neck, and looked at the cufflinks that Morgan had given to him the night before at the rehearsal dinner. They were vibranium arc reactors that she had asked Shuri to help design. Which, of course, Shuri had told him but he’d pretended to be surprised as he thought it was sweet that she made such a lovely gift for him. “I’m on my way now, Pepper.”
“Are you going to take the suit? Because traffic is bad.”
“I’ll make it, okay? I promise. Don’t worry.” He ended the call before he thought about what she had suggested. Swinging through Manhattan might not be a bad idea, but he wasn’t about to lug his suit on his back. It would get wrinkled, or worse - he’d accidentally drop it and then that would be that. No, he’d make it to the church because he had to. Fate would be on his side this one time, he hoped.
Taking the elevator down to the garage, he wasn’t at all surprised to see Happy was waiting for him with an annoyed look on his face. “Pepper told me you were going to need a ride.”
“Hah. Of course she did.” He greeted his friend with a warm hug, then went to sit in the front seat with him. “Have you already been to the church? How’s it look? Is it beautiful?”
“You were there yesterday!”
“Without flowers, Happy!” Peter groaned, as they drove towards the church. “I hope they look beautiful. She deserves it.”
“She does. And it does. Don’t worry - Pepper has spared no expense for this shindig.”
He leaned back and sighed softly. “I should hope not. Hopefully Morgan is only going to do this once.”
“Prenup says yes.” They shared a look and smirked.
Happy pulled up to the church with five minutes to spare. “Go. I’ll park the car.”
“You better make it!” He said to him, as he unbuckled his seat belt and jumped out of the car. “Morgan will murder us both if you don’t!”
“I know!”
He watched Happy drive away, hoping that he would find a spot in the parking lot. If they had been smart, they would have left one for him. He fixed his tie again as he walked up the pathway to the back of the church, where he saw Pepper standing at the top of the steps, looking as beautiful as ever - streaks of white coloring her red hair throughout.
“Where’s Happy?” She asked, after they greeted each other with a semi-formal hug. He didn’t want to ruin her beautiful dress, nor did she want to get any make-up on his jacket. “He’s supposed to be with you.”
“He’s parking the car.” He laughed, as he saw Pepper roll her eyes. “Come on, you knew this would happen.” He took a peek in the church and saw that every single pew was full on both sides. “Full house, huh?”
“Apparently they are very popular.” She sighed, then hooked her arm through his. “She’s been asking for you for the last hour. What took you so long?”
“I had to find something.” The ushers greeted them, friends of the groom, and then they headed back to where Morgan was staying. “I’m not giving it to her until the reception, though.”
“That bad?”
Pepper had a sad smile on her face, one that Peter had grown used to seeing over the years. He knew why she looked at him like that - like he was carrying on the legacy her dead husband had left behind. “Something like that.” He returned her sad smile, then looked at the door. He gave a little knock. “You’d better be wearing clothes!” He ducked his head through the crack of the door, comically keeping his eyes covered.
“Peter!”
Morgan’s warm laugh had him lifting his head. He stared in awe at the beautiful woman that she’d become - long reddish brown hair that fell past her shoulders, beautiful hazel eyes - the perfect combination of both her mother and father. He felt a lump well up in his throat as he went over to her and embraced her as one would their own flesh and blood. He held her close, not caring if she got any makeup on his clothes because this was necessary.
“I’m sorry I’m so late.” He had to clear his throat before speaking, that lump still sitting there as he hugged Morgan tight. “I set an alarm and everything.”
“Typical.” Morgan pulled away, dabbing at the corner of her eyes as she laughed.
“It’s definitely something your father would have done.” Pepper said, as he stood behind Morgan, her Maid of Honor getting their flowers ready. “It’s almost time.”
“Can I have a minute alone with Peter?”
“Of course, honey.” Pepper exchanged a look with the rest of the bridesmaids, and they all filed out. Pepper stood at the door. “Come on out when you’re ready. We’ll line up.”
“Thanks, Mom.” Morgan nodded, Peter feeling like he was having an out of body experience. The door closed, leaving the two of them alone with each other. “You know, it means a lot to me that you’re here today, Peter.”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” His eyes began to water, as he tried to keep it together. All morning, he’d been telling himself that there was nothing to this. He was doing what anyone would do in his position. “You asked me to do this, and of course I was going to say yes.”
“I know. But I could have asked Happy. Professor Hulk has tried for months to convince me it should be him and not you doing this.”
Peter laughed, then shook his head. “He’s right, though. Maybe he would have been more suited than me.”
“Are you kidding? It’s already a circus out there because all of the old team is here.” Peter had a feeling it would be - most of them had moved on, trained the new blood to do what they’d done for years. “But, I knew that was going to happen. I couldn’t not have them here, just like I had to ask you to do this.” She grabbed his hands, and held them tight, Peter looking into her eyes with a soft fondness. “He would have wanted it this way.”
“He would.” Peter nodded his head, a watery smile now tugging on his lips. “Look, if we keep talking about this, we’re both going to lose it. How about we get this show on the road, and put a ring on that finger?”
“R-Right.” The soft, wispy laugh that left Morgan’s mouth brought a fresh ache to his chest. “Ready to do this?”
“That’s what I should be asking you.” He walked over to the door, helping her fix her veil. “You have your vows? Your Maid of Honor has his ring?”
“Yes, and yes.” Morgan walked through the door, Peter walking with her to the very back of the church. “God, what am I doing?” She whispered, shaking her head. “This isn’t real.” The string quartet at the front of the church began to play, the procession into the church beginning. “Peter - I think I’m going to be sick.”
“You’re going to be great.” He offered her his elbow as Pepper was walked down the aisle by one of the ushers, and then the groom’s mother followed. “You love him. You know that you’re in a place where all of your family and friends are. We’re here to support you on this new venture in your life.” Peter put his hand over hers, and held it tight as the next group of bridesmaids and groomsmen began to head into the church. “There’s nothing to be scared of right now, Little Miss.”
A soft sob left Morgan’s mouth, Peter instantly regretting calling her by her favorite nickname that Tony had given to her as a child. “Damn it, Peter.” She whispered, but didn’t seem at all upset that he’d done that.
“You were supposed to laugh, not cry.” The flower girl and ring bearer began their walk down the aisle, leaving the two of them alone. “You ready? This is your last chance. I almost brought the suit with me in case you decided you wanted to just ditch this, although I’m pretty sure Pepper would kill me if I did that.”
She stared up at him, that same sad smile that had been on Pepper’s face earlier now on hers. “I’m fine, Peter. We can do this. I’m ready. Are you?”
“I am.”
Wagner’s Wedding March began to play, and Peter held his head high as he looked at Morgan one final time before they started to walk together down the aisle. Left foot, then right foot. He could hear cameras going on, thankfully without flash as the church was well lit for this time of day. He tried not to think about how this should have been Tony - Tony would have been so happy that his daughter had found someone perfect that promised to take care of him, and was a stand up person. Tony would have been so happy to give her away at the altar, probably making some awful joke to the groom, which would cause the church to laugh because what else were you going to do when Tony Stark made that kind of a comment? Peter kept his eyes forward, but knew that the tears were already falling down his eyes as he mourned the loss of the man that had changed his life in so many ways, and now here he was - taking up the position that was meant for the bride’s father. Pepper could have done this, in fact she had offered, but Morgan insisted it had to be Peter. And really - he would never have said no to her because he knew she was right. This was something he had to do.
The altar came faster than he thought it would, and soon he was standing there, Morgan squeezing his arm against her side. “Who gives this woman to be married to this man today?” The priest asked, as he stared right at him.
“I do.” He turned to Morgan, not caring that he was still crying as his hands touched her veil, and carefully lifted it for the world to see her beautiful face. She had her own set of tears tracking down her cheeks, and he was careful to wipe them away with a smile on his face. “I love you.” He mouthed to her, and saw her repeat it back with a heartwarming smile on her face. He stepped away, and went to stand next to Pepper, who put her arm around him and held him close without saying a word. No words needed to be said, as the most difficult part of the ceremony had been completed.
He listened to Morgan say her vows, laughing with the attendees when she made silly jokes, and then felt his heart start to hurt when she mentioned her father. It was a sweet tribute, one that he knew that the rest of the Avengers were no doubt wiping their eyes at. When the priest announced that they were now married, Peter stood up with the rest of the congregation and cheered, clapping loudly, then stuck his fingers in his mouth to whistle loudly. Morgan shot him a look, but laughed and then kissed her husband again before they walked down the aisle as husband and wife.
“You don’t have to stay for pictures if you don’t want to, Peter.” Pepper said, as he walked with her down the aisle following the bridesmaids and groomsmen.
“Morgan wants me there. I will be there.” Peter held onto Pepper’s hand as they made it to the end of the aisle and walked outside. “I know I won’t be in a lot of them.”
“You’ll be in plenty.” Pepper kissed his cheek. “Tony was here.”
“I know he was.” The congregation began to leave the church, congratulating the wedding party. The church had to empty out before they could go back in and take more pictures with the family. “He would have really liked him.”
“I agree. Although he would have been very tough on him.” They shared a look and laughed, Peter knowing exactly what she’d meant, because he’d always felt that in the two years he’d been able to spend with him. Tony had become as close to a father as he had in his life, and had cherished every moment he’d spent with him, even when he’d gone onto that ship and hid away. He was happy that Tony had been there at the end of his life, just as he’d done for him when he’d come back.
The wedding photographer appeared at the top of the stairs with their assistant, and dragged the wedding party back into the church. Peter hung out in the back with Happy, the two sharing quiet stories about Morgan, how they’d both watched her grow up to be this beautiful woman who was now laughing like crazy as they did poses up on the altar with her bridesmaids. Silly poses that he knew would probably go up on one of the walls in their house one day.
“Mr Parker!” The photographer called out. “We need you up here, please.”
He looked at Happy who shooed him away, and then approached the altar where Pepper was standing. “Should I be to the side?”
“No, I want you right here.” Morgan pointed to her left side. “Mom’s on the right. You have my heart, and she has my brain.”
“Morgan.” Peter felt the tears coming back strong. He heard the camera shutter go off, and then looked at the photographer. “Candid moment much?”
“Those are always the best.” The assistant grinned, and took another photo as they got into position.
“You three look beautiful.” Another picture was snapped. “Okay, let’s get the groom in here. Mr. Parker - please step to the side?”
“No.” Morgan held tight to him. “Make my mother move.”
“Sweetie.”
If anything was more true, it was that Morgan got her stubbornness from her father. Without a doubt, a true Stark. “Please, Mom?”
Pepper nodded, stepping to the side to allow Morgan’s husband to step next to his wife. Peter held tight to Morgan’s hand and smiled for the camera, then stayed for more pictures with the groom’s family. A slight chill raced down his spine, his eyes lifting up to the ceiling as he swore he could feel Tony’s presence again. Probably laughing at him, having to suffer through these pictures. He grinned, happy that Morgan wanted him to be in the family portraits.
Finally, it was time to head to the venue. He sat in the front seat with Happy, while Pepper sat in the backseat. “This is going to be a long night.” Pepper lamented, as she rested her chin on the back of Peter’s seat. “I hope neither of you are tired.”
“Are you kidding? She’s only getting married once.” Happy commented, taking a right turn. “We’re gonna do this right tonight. It’s what Tony would have wanted.”
“Exactly.” Peter looked back at Pepper, and saw that sad smile return to her face. “Come on, Peter. Let’s go reminisce about old times with the rest of the circus that I know has been dying to speak to the both of us.”
“Sounds good, Pepper.”
They made their way into the reception hall, where drinks and appetizers were being passed around. Peter soon found himself standing with Thor, Bucky, Sam, Hulk, Rhodes and Carol Danvers. The Guardians weren’t around, but that was okay - someone had to keep space safe. It became almost like a reunion, rather than a wedding, Peter laughing harder than he’s laughed in a very long time, as Pepper and the rest of the members told stories about Tony.
The bride and groom arrived, everyone cheering for them before heading into the dining room for the formal dinner, taking a spin on the dance floor to their first dance as husband and wife. Peter felt the tears start to return as he watched Morgan being led around, looking so happy and peaceful. He took out his phone and snapped a quick picture, so he could have at least shot of her being in the moment. So often he forgot to take his own phone out to do just that, but not today.
Peter could feel his heart beginning to palpitate as he knew he was going to be giving a toast in a bit. As they brought out the salad plates, Peter felt like his tuxedo jacket was getting heavier with each passing second. He somehow wound up making it through dinner, and then it was time for the dances. Pepper looked over at him, and he gave a small nod of his head. He approached the table, having prepared a speech before their dance together. The DJ gave him a microphone, and he cleared his throat to get the attention of the room.
“Hi.” He gave a small wave to the guests, who all looked back at him with attentive eyes. “I know most of you know me as Spiderman - or, the former Spiderman. Miles is doing a great job protecting the city, giving me the chance to retire from that life.” He looked over at Morgan, who was all smiles still. “I know that one of the reasons I’m here is because Morgan’s father - Tony - well, he did a lot for all of us.” Everyone knew that Tony had sacrificed himself to protect the universe. The room held up their glasses, Peter waiting for everyone to take a sip in memoriam of Tony. “Tony was like a father to me, and I know that he would be very happy that I was here, helming the ship in his absence.”
Walking over to the sweetheart table where Morgan was sitting, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the item that had made him late. “I made this for you a couple of years ago.” He set the box down on the table, and saw her stare up at him with a shocked expression on her face. “Okay, I didn’t make it so much as I modified it.” It was a box that contained a simple AI program. He wasn’t the best when it came to that field - that had really been Tony’s expertise, but after taking up residence in the penthouse, and working for SI, he’d discovered that Tony had left plenty of notes in case of his demise. “Go ahead.” He nodded, as she hovered her hand over one of the buttons on the box.
Morgan touched it, and a hologram of Tony appeared - much like it had when they had buried him. “Hey, Little Miss.” He heard a collective gasp happen at the same time, and then loud sobs. Peter held his hand out, and felt Morgan grab onto it as if it were a lifeline. “I know today is an important day for you - or so Mr. Parker has told me.” The AI version turned to him and threw him shade. It’s really you. “I just wanted to say congratulations. I’m sure the wedding was beautiful, and that you were equally as stunning as I knew you would be. And you -” the AI rendering of Tony turned to the groom, “You had better keep her happy, or there will be hell to pay.”
“That’s right!” Thor yelled from across the room.
“Thanks, buddy.” The AI waved, then turned back to Morgan. “Sorry I couldn’t be here, but this is the next best thing. Pretty cool, right? I love you three thousand, Morgan. Be good for me.” He blew her a kiss, then the program ended.
Peter brought the microphone back up, not caring that he was crying still. “You deserve all the happiness, Morgan. I love you very much.” He set the microphone down as she stepped into his arms, hugging him tight.
He led her to the dance floor, where they waltzed to what had been Tony and Pepper’s song. “That was amazing, Peter.” Morgan was still crying, as she rested her head on his shoulder. “I can’t believe you did that.”
“He’ll talk to you about whatever you want. It’s all I can do, for now. I’m trying to figure out a way for him to be more like Friday, but your dad was the best when it came to that sort of stuff.”
“Our dad, Peter.”
Crying a little more, Peter nodded his head, and held her close. “You’re right, Little Miss.”
The song came to an end, and Peter led her back to the sweetheart table, shaking the groom’s hand before heading back to the table with his friends. Hulk slapped him on the back, and Thor handed him his flask. He didn’t even ask, and instead just took a swallow, knowing it was Asgardian liquor.
“That was amazing, Peter.” Pepper spoke quietly, as the groom’s mother was now talking. “Thank you.”
“It’s really the least I could do, Pepper.” Peter gave her a watery smile. “But, you have to promise that this doesn’t mean we’re saying goodbye. I plan on being around for when she gets pregnant, or if she decides no babies, I want to go on family vacations like we used to. Please? You guys are my family.”
“Of course.” Pepper smiled, then ruffled his hair in much the same way that Tony used to do. “You know I’ve always thought of you as our son, even before Tony recognized it. His loss of you - that’s what brought Morgan into this world in the first place.”
That news hit him hard. It was something he always suspected, but hearing Pepper say it really did a number on him. “Pepper…”
“It’s okay.” She rubbed his back, as the music started to play, the groom and his mother dancing on the floor together. “We will always be your family, Peter.”
He knew she was right. No one in the world could ever replace his own parents, but Tony and Pepper sure had been close. He nodded his head, then picked up his glass of champagne. It was time to let loose. Tony may be gone, but his legacy would live on - through both himself and Morgan. He was going to be sure of that.

Atlas: Space, Saturn
TITLE: Atlas: Space
CHAPTER NO./ONE-SHOT: 8/12
AUTHOR: fanfictrashdump
ORIGINAL IMAGINE: Imagine narrating episodes of Loki’s life with the Avengers based on the songs from Sleeping At Last’s “Atlas: Space” album.
RATING: T-M
NOTES/WARNINGS: Welcome to my Sleeping At Last’s Atlas: Space challenge, aka Another writing project I do not have time for, but my brain insisted on doing.
This series will be less like a multichapter fic and more of a one-shot compendium, but that they all interconnect in one way or another. It will revolve around Loki and Becca’s relationship (Taking Turns, Glow, Helmet Heists–don’t worry, more Loki-Charlie stuff will be along) and I will use those one-shots as reference to the timeline. Each chapter will be one song, used as inspiration for the story.
Chapter 8: Saturn
Summary: Loki chooses a terrible time to develop a conscience, thinking he’ll have time to sort himself out and win her back. He doesn’t. (Post Taking Turns.)
Warnings include: Language, character death, and just… so much angst.

The mild autumnal breeze did little to soothe Loki’s fevered thoughts. He had put this moment off for so long that he nearly convinced himself that it was unnecessary, or that he could be selfish just a little longer. With every battle they saw together, with every bruise and bloody lip that they shared, mostly at the other’s expense, he knew he couldn’t hold off any longer. Loki sensed trouble brewing in the Universe, trouble that was coming for him. And he thought–no, he knew–that she would put herself in the middle for him without a moment’s hesitation.
He needed to stop this cursed experiment in feelings.
“I have to tell you something.” Loki’s voice was low and hesitant. Becca straightened up, fidgeting and shifting her weight from leg to leg as she watched him almost statuesque against the oak tree.
“I do, too,” she whispered, ducking her head down to hide her burning cheeks. He nodded her ahead and she took a deep breath, her warm brown eyes glancing up at him through long lashes. She looked so sweet and innocent and his heart panged. “I love you, Loki.”
He should’ve definitely gone first.
“I’m sorry you feel that way, Becca.” His words strained to even leave his mouth. All of this felt wrong and raw and he didn’t want to live with the image of her now disappointed face lingering in his mind for as long as she lived. “I’m going with Thor, off to explore. Mother’s… mother is dead and I have a responsibility to help him–”
Her brow furrowed into a deep frown. “A responsibility? You’re kidding me. Thor has actively avoided speaking to you for weeks over this mess with Jane! The only thing you owe Thor is a well-aimed kick for the way he treats you, sometimes.”
“You don’t understand–”
“You’re damn right, I don’t!”
There were tears in her eyes, threatening to spill over. He was expecting her to take it hard, but he could never have imagined it would make her this visibly upset. It almost made him want to reconsider his plans. Almost.
“I tell you that I love you, after months of us tiptoeing around each other and basically living together and you tell me–”
Loki’s face hardened. “I don’t expect a mortal to comprehend these issues.” He knew it was a low blow, but it was necessary. “Thor and I will be around each other for centuries more. It’s easy to forgive a slight with that kind of time.”
“Is it possible for you not to sabotage yourself for once in your fucking life?” Her teeth were clenched, but that did not detract from the jab her words delivered. She was so good at reading him, and from the way he tensed and his breath hitched, she knew it, too.
“I don’t love you.” His words came out slow and even, despite the bitter taste they left behind.
Stark had once told him that just letting her go would not keep her safe. He said to embrace the pain and make sure he would never feel that same terror he did when she was shot, again. Stark hadn’t considered the vast reputation a thousand years of being God of Mischief would build, or the enemies it brought with it. Even then, Loki was worried about his brother’s enemies rather than his own, at the moment. She didn’t need to know about the dark elves, or chaos in the realms–it would only make her volunteer for service.
“I don’t love you,” he repeated, barely a breath, whether to convince her or himself, he was unsure.
“Sure.” Becca laughed mirthlessly, nodding her head. “Pretend whatever you want. I’m not going to beg. Fuck off, Loki. See you when I see you.” Her shoulder brushed his as she walked back towards her apartment, arms wrapped around herself.
He stuffed his hands into his trouser pockets to keep from reaching out for her. “You won’t.”
You taught me the courage of stars before you left How might carries on endlessly even after death With shortness of breath you explained the infinite How rare and beautiful it is to even exist
Becca stood at the rooftop of the Avengers complex, staring at the stars above. In upstate New York, it was easier to see the stars. A corner of her lips tugged upwards as she stared at the burning balls of gas, millions of miles away, recalling each one’s name and story. Loki always had a way of explaining the stars and making their history become permanently engrained in her mind. It was one of the few memories she had with him that didn’t sting like all hell; one of the few moments when she didn’t mind thinking about him.
She had seen him since that day in the park, flashes of him in the complex, but never very long and never alone. Becca had to give it to him–he was stubbornly true to his word. Becca couldn’t conjure a single image of him that wasn’t a blur from the last few years. Thor, sweet as he was, tried not to bring him up, except once to say he had died but that had turned out to be a ruse. She still, stupidly–or sentimentally, whichever was most accurate–, provided both brothers with gear.
I couldn’t help but ask For you to say it all again I tried to write it down But I could never find a pen I’d give everything to hear You say it one more time That the universe was made Just to be seen by my eyes
“Lady Becca.” She sighed, letting her shoulders slump forward. To this day, she had not really forgiven Thor for his part in his brother’s hare-brained plot. He can convince Loki of so damn much, but he could not take five minutes to tell him to reassess what he had done; what he had said. Loki would–and had–risked everything for Thor and his love, but apparently the dedication was one-sided. “Becca.”
“What is it, Thor? Oh–what happened to your eye?” She had turned around, pulling the hoodie, that may or may not have belonged to Loki, tighter around her form. Thor looked worse for wear and there was some emotion in his face that she couldn’t quite place.
“I must speak with you. It’s about Loki.”
Becca scoffed, rolling her eyes. “What is it now? Did he break his AI? Another heat stroke? What?”
“He’s dead.” The words echoed in her head far longer than they should have.
She tried in vain to scramble for her control. “How many times does that make? Two? Three? Loki doesn’t just die, Thor.”
Thor was silent for a very long moment. She expected him to nod and chuckle, tell her she was right and that they should all wait for the frost giant to pop back up. Instead she got a lip quiver and tears streaming down his one good eye. “He loved you so much. He was going to come back for you. I am truly sorry.”
A stone the size of a boulder dropped in her stomach, at once. Her chest was constricting in sheer horror. “No. Thor, you’re wrong. He can't… You’re lying!”
“I’m so sorry.” The floor shook as Thor dropped Stormbreaker and rushed to tighten his arms around Becca.
With shortness of breath, I’ll explain the infinite How rare and beautiful it truly is that we exist
There were so many questions left inside of her head. As much as she wanted to ask Thor the who, what, when, where, and why, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Not when he was sobbing so hard and so loudly that she could almost hear his heart cracking beneath his armor. Thor had never been the best brother to Loki, and she knew that, but there was a genuine affection that he had for his little brother that was twisting at his insides. Whatever promises he had made to support Loki or to make amends for his actions were now gone and those regrets hurt more than his death.
Becca reached the point that she had cried so hard and so desperately that she had to go to the MedBay to pick up a rescue inhaler. She had not needed one in over two decades, but this was the night it was going to get a hell of a lot of use. She sat on the floor of what used to be Loki’s room, staring at the stars out of his window, retelling herself the stories of each of the constellations. The tales of how each orb had been hung in the sky; of the warriors of old that went to Valhalla and populated the night sky; the endless patch of dark that was the Universe and how infinitesimal the probability of their existence was in the grand scheme of things. She tried not to think of his soothing voice, calculating odds of how likely it was that a girl from Midgard would meet a god from Asgard and how they’d won the lottery. How he had won the lottery every second he had her.
Most of all, she tried not to hate the fact that he had left her and turned her back into a statistic, never to feel irrationally lucky ever again. The Universe embraced this new reality.

Headcanon Background
These are my headcanons following the world of “Do You Understand?”
This is just extra world building and character stuff that I didn’t want bogging down the main story or have established in there for future reference. Some of these headcanons are inspired by fics I’ve read btw. I might add onto this in the future.
WARNING: Minor Spoilers ahead - I do suggest reading this after the story is complete.
-this mostly covers Connor, Nines and Hank because they’re the ones I most often deal with. If anyone asks for the others or I think of some for them I might add em.
MasterList
World:
This is Post Pacifist route and everyone lives (best ending)
The actual events of the game take much longer, the revolution doesn’t end until towards the end of December to January.
Some events of the game went a bit differently since the time is stretched and because mister Cage is dumb. Like Markus can’t do the weird look deviation thing for funsies. And Alice is human (even if not shown). And there were more revolutionary events that aren’t discussed but happened.
Androids are also much more open about their inhumaness, they often act more human like around humans. However, while alone, androids tend to talk via their internal networks most often (some choose to outwardly speak only too, it’s just preference) and refer to themselves in less human manners.
Okay ngl I’m not gonna get into how to fix this mess of a world Cage made, I’m going to idealize some things in this fic (like I made a landlord nice and not much ACAB- or really any cop stuff), this is merely for fic purposes. I ain’t gonna play moral battlefield with Cage’s dumbass for what started as a vent fic. Just know I don’t agree with a lot of the decisions Cage made for this game’s plot.
Connor RK800:
The RK800 model was made with less articulations in his face so as to cut corners given he was meant to just be a trial. -He needs to consciously run facial expression programs and they can be quite awkward.
Same vein, Connor’s constant calibration, while also a stim, lack of tear ducts, and blinking glitch are also due to Cyberlife cutting corners
Connor Has ADHD because I do so he does too
He also stims by pacing or running, but he tends to do this in absolute private.
He likes to change his hair color quite often to differentiate himself from Nines (He would change his eye color if he could), he does have Bryan’s curly hair but he still consistently styles it to the game style.
His wardrobe style consists of button ups (black, white and floral), turtlenecks, a dark grey blazer, knee length black coat, black jeans, and dress shoes (often Cyberlife ones since they’re just slip ons essentially)
He has killed/hunted way more deviants (and humans) than in game Connor. When he isn’t with Hank, Cyberlife ordered him to simply hunt down and dispose of any deviants he could find. (they wanted results they just played nice with the law for show)
While he wasn't cruel and let all deviants he met with Hank go (except Rupert), any deviants he found while "off duty" did not receive the same mercies (some would even be found mangled beyond recognition). Hank really amplified the humanity in him but only when present. It was also easier to ignore orders when he had a scapegoat.
He also remembers all prior iterations of himself; while the corruption in memory is still there, it was used to condition him in “right” from “wrong”.
He spent a lot more time with Amanda especially during early trials as well so his loyalty to her is very deep and she is like a mother figure to him.
This is Connor model -54. Past 3 models deactivation: Fell with Daniel while protecting Emma (Successful mission); Success w/ Carlos’ android, but he still self destructed and got shot in the interrogation room when trying to stop them; Stratford tower kitchen but the deviant crushes his thirium pump before running leaving him unable to be saved.
He did go up to the roof and saw how Simon was left behind, but he thought about how Hank would be displeased if he killed this android in front of him, given prior results, so he left back to the kitchen last second. Simon knows he left him alone but he doesn't know why.
*pats his head* this boy can hold so much unprocessed trauma
Also this Connor is not an “uwu soft boy”, he is a bastard man. A nice bastard man, but a bastard man none the less. He will sell you to Satan for a single corn chip (/j). He is severely touch-starved though.
He is very bad at expressing and showing his true emotions in a way that makes sense since he’s spent the last, however many, iterations putting himself in a tomb of denial, fear and anger in order to survive. He often expresses nothing or in a manner that he feels will benefit him (arguably manipulative but he is in constant survival mode still). (unless he gets too overwhelmed by his own emotions like hella overwhelmed)
He wasn’t necessarily “deviant” when a machine, his social relations and general programming just saw the act of being more emotionally expressive as giving him a higher chance of not being killed by his handlers. Basically “if they think I’m like a cute roomba, they won’t kill me as easily”. He still experienced frustration, fear and other emotions he ignored, but he was under command (with code and external pressures), his own AI just got fucky and advanced without anyone realizing it (from trauma).
The books in his apartment are random books hes bought from a thrift store, but there are some mystery books and a sea creature encyclopedia in the mix. - The manta ray plush is a gift from Hank, the Whale is a gift from Nines.
Connor (Nines) RK900:
He looks and sounds exactly like Connor. Height, build, face, voice and everything is the exact same except he has blue eyes.
Arguably Nines’ system name is still registered as “Connor” but he just never felt the need to change it since he just goes by Nines anyways.
He has more articulations in his face, even more than the average android, and he tends to take advantage of this. He does feel bad sometimes after being a walking reminder that Connor meant nothing to Cyberlife, but they both tend to not want to talk about that and just ignore it. He doesn’t know how deep Connor’s jealousy goes though.
Given he activated deviant, he really isn’t sure what being a machine is like or having to follow orders. This sometimes is a disadvantage as he doesn’t get sometimes why androids, like Connor, would lean so heavily onto their old programming.
This also means, he’s very expressive and open about his emotions. They were free so why would he try hiding what he felt ? (This can sometimes get him in trouble)
Where Connor changes his hair, Nines wears very loud and vibrant clothing, if he finds a shirt that screams ugly he will wear it. His usual get up is asymmetrical colored button ups, whatever pants he grabs that morning, dress shoes (don’t worry they’re ugly too) and his favorite highlighter neon yellow and orange hooded jacket. He also tends to change into more comfy wear when at his room in New Jericho.
He is partnered with Gavin Reed, but those two really aren’t friends and never will be. Nines can handle him just fine at work but he would never invite that man anywhere near him after it. He is friends with most of the DPD. People find him really friendly and enjoy talking to him.
He also owns a cat named Clem, not much is known about her because she’s really shy.
While he still has access to the base zen garden program, the program is not connected to anything and never had the Amanda AI implemented yet. Since he was never rolled off the press properly and Amanda was set to change connections to the new model set when Connor was done, it never happened.
He was released from Cyberlife storage due to an agreement between them and Markus that all remaining prototypes would be released and androids would have access to the tower in order to produce biocomponents and parts (Cyberlife still owns the building arguably and has access to any info/security there though). He’s honestly not that close to the Jericho leadership despite everything. He talks to them every once in a while but he doesn’t actively talk to them.
Arguably yes he is one of many RK900s, but for sake of story, he is the -84 model of the series and the only one we will see.
Hank Anderson:
After the revolution, he offers Connor a place to stay out of worry. He won’t admit it, but he had a gut feeling con man wasn’t doing well (he was right)
He does work on his drinking problem, but he still has a lot of issues and sometimes relapses. He’s slowly getting better.
He’s like a dad figure to Connor but he isn’t his dad. He gives guidance, but he also gets that Connor is arguably a full grown adult even if he is emotionally like 1 years old. He kinda is a dad to Nines too, but this isn’t as focused on in the story. While he is a bit less grumpy (aggressive) enter Connor, he still a bit of a sour boot most of the time. He just is sober while doing it now. He started wearing a ponytail after the revolution to keep his hair out of his face. He lets Connor trim it every once in a while, but he can’t bring himself to go back to the short style. This Hank adopted Cole as a baby after finding him at a crime scene. He never got married. (He jokes about having an ex-wife out of a sense of compulsory heteronormativity and because it’s funny to him) He used to treat Gavin like a son of sorts before Cole’s death, but practically dropped him afterwards which is why Gavin is doubly hostile towards him. The house he lives in now is not the same house he lived in when Cole was alive. He also got rid of a lot of Cole’s stuff when moving (The toys and clothes he kept are in a box in the garage).

okay so i have been having bad brain lately and struggling with life but i just took a deep dive into your ao3 to catch up on all your wonderful words and needed to let you know how brilliant you are (again) bc it’s been a while. thank you for writing the dentist. it’s such a beautiful heartbreaking story and you handled the mental health stuff so very tenderly and carefully and the way virgil’s brothers care so much and so differently, my heart just !!!! (1)
i know we’ll be home for christmas wasn’t my secret santa gift but it truly feels like it when you bless us with injured virgil and beautiful scenery and pure unadulterated fluff. what a beautiful world you have created. sotto voce is just. phenomenal. there are no words for how much it blows me away every time i reread. the prince who would be king?? i don’t normally read medieval stuff but this???? is everything!!! (2)
shooting star hurts so much but in the best way, you are TOO GOOD to us. finally. i will stop soon dw, but listen, live, lie, laugh, learn & love??? honestly probably my favourite fic ever. i come back to it often and just weep every time because it’s a masterpiece and virgil is so perfect in it, i am just so in love with your writing style. every time you post i get a happy leap in my chest & i get inspired to write my own so thank you for making me love writing again. you’re the best xoxo (3)
-o-o-o-
I woke up to these this morning and oh my god, I have just reread this so many times trying to work out how to do justice and answer such lovely words ::hugs you so much::
I really couldn’t have written what I have without this wonderful fandom to keep me going. You, in particular, have always been so encouraging and amazing to me, how can I not keep writing?  I stumble across your comments from time to time while rereading fic and they are just so encouraging ::hugs you madly::
I’m sorry to hear that life is being nasty to you ::offers you a Virgil to hug:: I hope things improve as soon as possible. ::more hugs:: I’m glad my fic helps just a little bit. I know I’ve used fanfic in the past to get through rough patches, so I’m really just returning the favour.
Regarding the fics you mention: (wherein Nutty babbles about behind the scenes of her fics)
The Dentist - My most recent actually started out as supposed to be funny, but I’m never in control of these things. I drew from my own phobic experiences (though not of dentists and certainly not caused like Virgil’s). I grew up in a, shall we say, unsympathetic environment to a sensitive child (I am sensitive to a whole bunch of things - side effect of my artistic abilities, I guess, has it’s up and down sides) and developed at least two phobias that messed with my life. The only thing I ask is if someone says they are scared of something, please respect that and assist them in working with it rather than mocking them. It may seem stupid, but the fear is real and terrifying. And yes, Scott Tracy, I’m looking at you - treat Brains with a little more respect, you arrogant flyboy. Not everyone has the same talents. Thank you so much for your kind words and for reading through what turned out to be a very emotional fic ::hugs you lots::
We’ll Be Home For Christmas - I feel Secret Santa is really a gift to everyone. We all enjoy reading each other’s fics and I’m so glad you are enjoying this one. This one has been magical for me. I have learnt so much researching it and I feel I’ve been on the voyage with the boys. Poor Virg, though, I had to injure him just to get the plot moving. I am so mean to him :D I will finish this fic. It has to be finished. I’m enjoying it far too much for it not to be finished. As to the world, I didn’t create it ::hugs:: The beauty of it is that it actually exists just north of New Zealand. I have watched so many videos of this amazing place, I will have to share when the fic is finished :D
Tales of Sotto Voce - This series will always have a big place in my heart as it impacted on my writing like no fic before it. I learnt so much and enjoyed it so much. I really need to finish The Price because John needs to have the last say in this saga and boy, does he have a lot to say. Thank you so much for rereading it. It is always wonderful to hear that my archived words are still being read ::hugs::
The Prince Who Would Not Be King - I’m a little scared of this one. It could essentially become a novel and it would be a steep learning curve for my writing skills. The amount of work involved is daunting and honestly it is tempting :D But not until I finish Shooting Star, We’ll Be Home For Christmas and The Hero :D It seems I can write things at the drop of a hat, in fifteen minutes, at lunch, before work, early in the writing piece, but each story gets to about the three-quarter mark and then I really have to start thinking hard to make sure I tie up all the loose ends and deliver what the story demands - this can’t be done at odd minutes, so gets relegated to time off work where I can focus, hence the delays. Plus my frickin’ muse often refuses to behave ::glares at it:: I’ll wrangle with it and will win eventually ::glares at it some more::
Shooting Star - I was looking at this one yesterday. I have the conclusion worked out, I’m just trying to segway into it. Muse wouldn’t co-operate so I wrote Together instead. This was supposed to be a simple Virgil-John chat fic. It blew up in my face. The emotions in this one just hurt. But I feel it is a conversation the boys had to have. Scott would not just leave his brother up there with a potentially murderous AI. There has to be a reason why it all worked out...and some how or other I now have to illustrate exactly that ::headdesk:: How do I get myself into these situations? But anyway, some more is written, I just have to make it work properly. Thank you for sticking with me as I stumble through my brain working things out :D
Listen, Live, Lie, Laugh, Learn & Love - I have always loved the 5 + 1 fic format, but had never written one. At this point I wasn’t sure I could finish such a challenging format (yeah, look at my long fics now, but back then I was terrified I didn’t have it in me). I also had no idea where the fic was going until about halfway through, was totally new to the fandom and to Virgil’s character and to this day still worry I bent his character oddly with the choir boy bit. It is true that canon Virgil has never sung on screen (that I’ve been able to discover) so this fic is possible, but I’ve never been entirely confident I pulled it off well. So yeah, lots of doubt hovering around this early piece, so your words mean ever so much to me, particularly about this fic ::hugs you lots::
But most of all, the best thing you’ve said in all this is that you are inspired to write. I couldn’t ask for more. There is never anything more wonderful than knowing I have helped another artist pick up a pen or brush or take that step to push their ideas out into the world. The world is so much better the more art and creativity unleashed upon it. The world is crazy about science and technology, but the truth of the matter is that art and creativity and innovation underpin everything our species has ever achieved. That and art can offer such relief from a crazy world that does not lend itself to the natural rhythms of life.
::grin:: I’m not a coffee drinker like the Virg, but you wanna see Nutty devolve into a similar bearhead to the sans coffee Virgil, just see what happens when I’m denied my creative time. You get fic cos Nutty needs to exercise her creativity everyday. It keeps me healthy. It comes in many forms and media, but at the moment it is writing and TAG and yay, lots of fic :D
Aaaand, I’m babbling. Apparently I like to talk about myself ::ducks head shyly:: Sorry :D
But thank you ever, ever so much for all your support. It means ever so much to me and the only way I can really express it is to write more fic. :D
Which reminds me - I do take prompts, do you have something in particular you would like me to write? I’ve just come up on my 100th TAG fic on Ao3 and I should celebrate. I don’t think I’ve written you a special fic. Would you like to make a request?
::Hugs you ever so madly and sticks marshmallows down your shirt::
Thank you so much for reading and being so kind and putting up with my crazy.
Nutty
(off the edge, learning to fly, ignoring that damned migraine I had this morning and worshipping the almighty paracetamol)

‘La Reina’
Roger Taylor x OC Reader
Description:  You’re a dancer in a shady club. Lonely and abused, you dream of a way out of your misery, which turns out to be a man that goes by the name ‘The Drummer’.
Words: 4.5k
Warnings: major angst, graphic violence, mental and physical  abuse, mentions of death, strong language, degradation, light smut.
Note: The setting of the fic is inspired by Gorilla by Bruno Mars. It’s just fiction at the end of the day.
A mood board/ aesthetic in a separate post.
So here it is. Enjoy:
“All I’m saying is, at the end of the day, you get your money straight into your pocket” Gabriela places her hand on your shoulder, as you exhale sharply shaking your head.
“Miguel, may not the be the best guy, but he takes care of us.” Her eyes sincerely warm, as you look up to her.
You open your mouth to talk, but are interrupted by a loud banging on the door.
“Gabriela! You’re up.” A rusty voice shouts from the other side of the cracking door.
“I’m doing new trick tonight. Fingers crossed it’ll be my next hit.” She squints her eyes.
“I’m rooting for ya” you give her a wide grin. “Go, girl.” You give her bum a light smack as she leaves the room straight onto the scene. Taking her place on the stage, the music starts and so does her dance.
Meanwhile, you come close to the decayed old mirror with flickering lights to look at yourself. Running your hand through your hair, you give a little volume as you help yourself with the curling iron. Swiping some red lipstick, you blow yourself a kiss in the mirror.
“I hope I get good tips tonight” you think as you examine your body, spinning around on your high heels. “And hopefully a not so disgusting man would pay me for a private dance, I have to save up as much as I can”. You quietly preach to yourself.
“La Reina!” the same frisky voice that always makes you cringe barges in.
“Hi Miguel.” You keep your eyes focused on doing your makeup.
“You have a customer, guapa.” He speaks, while swirling a cigarette in his mouth.
“What customer? I haven’t even performed yet.” You turn on your chair.
He comes to you close enough for his smelly dirty tank top to be up your nose.  Turning your head away you stand up, but he catches you by your wrist, pulling you down again.
“I said, you have a customer. You don’t make moves on me.” His thick stinky fingers grab your jaw, forcing you to look at him. He lifts his brows waiting for your words.
“Which booth?”  you clench your teeth, trying to break free from his grip.
“Nine” he smiles under his moustache. “That’s better.” He forcefully lets you fall on the chair again. “If it wasn’t me, you’d be dead by now.” He comes close to your face pointing his index finger “You’ve nowhere to go, you’re a zero.” You swallow at his last words, as it stings right where it hurts the most.
“Booth nine.” Your lips barely move.
As you went to give the customer the dance he’s paying for, you can’t help but think of a better life. How one day, maybe soon, you’ll be away from this nasty shithole. But Miguel was right, you have nowhere to go and almost no money. The only friend you have is Gabriela and she’s too deep in this to leave with you.
“The lovely La Reina.” The old man sitting in the booth waves a hundred-dollar note. You gently give him the dance moves he’s expecting, grinding onto his lap just so he can stuff his money in your bra.
After you’re done, it’s your turn to go on stage. Miguel stops you on your way.
“Tonight we have very special guests. It’s their first time here, make them feel warm and welcome.” He intensifies the last two words. “They’re musicians. A band, very popular now. Don’t disappoint me La Reina, or else!” he clenches his jaw.
“I never put a bad show.” You quirk your lips into a smirk.
The audience is quiet when Miguel announces you on the speaker “It’s time you meet the star of the show. Reach deep and take your money out, because I present you La Reina de La Jungla.” The crowd starts cheering.
The lights flash and point at you as the music starts. Determined to give a killer show, you take your time to look at the clientele tonight. As you gracefully move your body around the pole, you notice the new faces. They stand out from the rest. They seem brighter and dressed strangely for this locality. You smirk, as your eyes lay on one of them.
As your dance progresses and you are left with nothing but lingerie and high heels, you wave your hair seductively and swing your hips in rhythm. Then your graze falls on the same man again. He’s hair is blonde and messy. “Interesting”you think, “very unlike everybody around here.” After you finish your dance, everybody in the crowd cheers, but you notice that he doesn’t. He is casually laying his back against the bar with a cigarette and whiskey hanging in the same hand. He is only smirking. “What a weird guy.”You think.
When you head back to the dressing room you see Gabriela gushing with some shiny jewellery. You immediately try to hide your tired face with a fake smile.
“What’s that, mi vida?” you point at her fiddling hands, while preparing to remove your makeup.
“Ai, look.” She opens her hands to reveal sparkly necklace with matching earrings.
“They’re pretty. Who gave it to you?” you give her a warning look, while wiping away your lipstick.
“Who can? Miguel of course!” she shoulder bumps you.
“Why would I even ask.” You shake your head.
“Oh come on. He’s not that bad at all.” Her voice reasoning.
“Yeah, yeah. You know your shit.” You wave your hands in defeat.
“I’ll go get a drink from the bar. Hopefully I’ll get a few more customers tonight.” You reapply your lipstick. On top of your lingerie you slip short tight dress. You put your messy hair in an updo and make your way out.
“Hi Jose, a martini, por favor.” You tap your fingers on the bar, looking around.
“For La Reina, always.” The bartender brings you the liquor filled glass with two olives in it.
“What do we have tonight?” you say to him, as you turn around to examine more carefully.
“These new guys, the band.” He taps on your shoulder to look to your left.
“The blonde one might be your luck tonight. I heard those splurge their cash.” He winks at you.
You smirk, as you bring the glass up to your lips. “We shall find out.” You mouth as you look straight the same guy over again, this time he’s staring back.
You turn your bum seductively around and lay on the bar. Just like clockwork, he shows up next to you and orders whiskey.
“You were incredible up there.” He places his hand on the bar and cocks his head.
“I always do my best.” You take a sip from your drink.
“Your moves were so mesmerizing.” He furrows his blonde brows. “How about you give me a dance in one those booths?” he cocks his head again pointing behind your back.
“They’re only for paying customers.”
“I’ve got plenty of cash.” He puts money on the bar for his drink.
“Follow me.” You swing gracefully around and lead him to the curtained booths.
Once there he takes a comfortable seat with the whiskey in hand. You hop on the table and start moving slowly. Wrapping yourself around the pole you release your hair, making if fall around your shoulders. You see him getting a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket. Swiftly you slide down from the pole right in front of him on the table, with your legs wide open you kneel on the same height as his head. Bringing a lighter up to his cigarette he looks into your eyes taking a deep drag. Even with dimmed lights, you can see the wet look in his eyes.
Smiling, you pull away and start to teasingly slide your dress off. With your back flat against the table your legs pointing high up the ceiling you give him a good view.
“Come on my lap” he commands with the cigarette in his mouth and whisky in his hand.
You make your way and situate in him. He watches you intensely as you grind onto him. His lips part with each harder pressure on where he’s getting tight. But soon enough you pull away.
“A’ight blondie, your time’s up.” You open your palm waiting for your cash.
“You’re such a rip off. Was just starting to enjoy the show” he smirked, putting away the leftover of his cigarette in the tray. Searching his pockets, he takes out a few notes, each of one hundred pounds sterling and stands up. Coming extremely close, you take few hesitant steps backward.
“Don’t run from me.” He whispers at your ear, as you feel your heart starting to race. He inhales your smell of heavy perfume and hairspray. His mouth falls on your shoulder to place a warm and rather long kiss there, while his hand stuffs the notes in your bra. You close your eyes and instinctively push your chest further into his touch, before realising the situation. You aren’t allowed to get intimate with the customers. Miguel could beat the shit out of you for such behaviour if this guy comes onto him for it, or at least tells somebody and it gets to Miguel’s ears.
You push him away by his shoulders and look him dead in the eye “I gotta go.” You run off, leaving him puzzled.
“Hey, wait. Why did you run?” he comes a few steps after you. You shake your head, making your way to the dressing rooms. He follows you and bangs on the door.
“Go away.” You try to sound stern and uninterested.
“But…”
“I said, go away.” You shout louder, holding the tears.
“I didn’t even get your name…” his voice falls as his fingers glide over the crown pendant hanging outside your door.
“Hey! You. Muchacho. You can’t be here.” You hear the raspy voice of your boss.
“What? No? I can’t? I was just trying to...” his words are cut off by a, what sounds like, a punch and then a kick.
You rush to open the door, only to find the blonde man standing up the ground with blood on his shirt. You stare at awe, unable to speak a word.
“He threatens one of my girls. Did he hurt you?” his finger reach for your cheek.
“No. Move aside Miguel. The man is hurt, you didn’t have to hit him.” You brush past him to help the guy out.
“I’m so sorry.” You mumble as you try to stop the bleeding from his nose.
“Was it worth it?” he looks thought hooded eyes.
“Worth it what?” you smile gently.
“To get to know your name.” he struggles through coughs.
You chuckle, trying to get him to one of the booths to sit down. Once you place him there you go to grab a glass of water from the bar.
“Here.” You help him drink. After that you dip a handkerchief in what was left in the glass and start brushing the blood off his face. Noting he keeps staring at you, you sigh in defeat and shake your head.
“I go by La Reina.”
He hums and smiles with a wide grin, slowly flicking his long eyelashes, which you study intently.
“La Reina” he repeats.
“Can I know your name too?” you cock your head to the side.
“Roger Taylor. I play in a rock and roll band.” he perks his chest up, but shrugs of the pain.
“Hm.” You nod your head “how intriguing.”
“Indeed.” His brows furrow, “My band’s called Queen.”
“So am I.” you gracefully stand up. Lifting his chin up, you follow his gleaming blue eyes. In this moment, maybe your heartbeat or something, but you see his lips so kissable. Not hesitating for another second, your fingers tighten the grip around his chin, keeping his head up. Quickly lowering yourself you place a kiss against his lips. And it’s everything you trusted you gut it would be, the butterflies in your stomach, the weakness in your knees, the whole world freezing in place.
“Bye, Roger.” You smile at him, as you pull away and turn on your heel to return to your dressing room, leaving him all puzzled once again.
The stupid smile on your face washes away immediately, as you stumble upon Miguel. He blocks your way with his body. You dare to let your eyes meet his, only to see fury in them. Clenching your jaw, you make a move to brush past him. His hand grabs your wrist and brings it up in front of your face “Don’t make me regret the decision I took when I saw you lying half-dead in the dirt that day.”
You give him a stern look and lift your chin up. Letting go, you rush to your dressing room and lock the door behind you. Resting your back against the door, you close your eyes and take deep breaths.
“You alright?”
You notice Gabriela walking towards you.
“I can’t take this anymore.” You shake your head, breathing heavily.
“What happened?” her hands rest on your shoulders.
“This happened. I happened, I’d probably be better off dead by now.” You furiously brush her away.
“Talk to me. I’m your friend.” She hands you a glass of water.
You sigh, taking the water “Take a seat. Tis gon be long.” You assure her.
Later that night, you curl up in your bed. Pushing the sheets down the floor, it’s purely too hot and steamy for you to sleep. Memories of today keep your mind occupied, until you find yourself sobbing.
“Stupid bitch.” You say to yourself, brushing a few burning tears off your cheeks. Opting for a cold shower, you find yourself leaning against the cracked tiles of the bathroom. “Soon. Soon, I’ll be far away.”
Returning to the bed, your body is seemingly refreshed, but no shower can wash your mind. Hugging your pillow tight, you force yourself to drift off to sleep.
You wake up to a pounding sound, coming from somewhere inside. The sour taste of last night’s events still bitter in your mouth. Gulping two aspirins, you decide to stay in bed today. Life can’t get more damned than this.
“The Drummer. He is known as, The Drummer.”
You lift your head to look around where this voice is coming from “Huh?”
“Your guy.” Gabriela sits on the edge of the bed, pulling the sheets off your face.
You growl, pulling them back to cover yourself.
“He’s not my guy. “ you mumble from underneath.
“Then why are you upset over him?” she playfully tickled you.
“Who said I was upset?” you pull the sheets to unveil your messy hair and smudged leftovers of makeup.
“You face mija, says it all.” She concludes.
You shake your head and stand up.
Deciding to try your hardest to push aside all cloudy thoughts, you carry out the rest of your day as usual.
By the time you are ready for dancing in the club again, all tension has vanished your body.
“Look. I’m really feeling good now.” You  assure Gabriela. “That Drummer guy is in the past. Plus he is from far away. He and his band won’t probably set foot here ever again. So no need for me to worry.” You conclude.
“Haha.” She ironically laughs.
“Why you laughing?” You out down the clothes you were holding.
She starts laughing even more hysterically.
“Seriously?!”
“Look” she pulls you to take a peek through the door “It’s him, isn’t it?”
You huff loudly “Damn right he is.”
Going back to your chair you cross your legs to stop your nervous knee. Lighting a cigarette, you take a deep drag closing your eyes. “Looks like it’ll be another hell of a night.” You bite your lip.
“La Reina.” Miguel storms in.
“Unannounced, as always.” You remark.
“Keep your little comments to yourself, you perra.” He grunts, as you give him a frown though the mirror.
“The Drummer wants to see you. Now. And he’s paying good cash for you. Too good in fact.” He seems to be drifting in counting his money once again.
“Good. He may as well buy me off you. I’d rather be a white man’s whore, than yours.” You drop your cigarette in the glass he’s holding.
“Who do you think you are talking to me like that?” he drips the glass on the table and comes near you.
Closing his stinky fingers around your throat, he makes you look at him. “It’s been a while it seems, you little puta have forgotten your place.” He spits though his teeth straight at your face as your eyes shut.
“And she keeps doing it. I’ll show you who’s your boss now.” He drags you by your throat and throws you out of the door, making you trip over your heels and fall.
“Stand up bitch!” he grabs a fistfull of your hair and drags you to the club.
“Stop it! Miguel, stop!?” you scream desperately trying to find a way to escape.
“Shut up!” he gives you a strong slap on the face. Keeping your head down, you don’t even try to hold you tears, as they quickly come running down you reddened cheek stinging as they drop to your chin. “P-please” you quietly manage as your heartbeat silences your hearing.
He grabs you by the hair on the back of your head, forcing you to show your ruined face to him, red cheeks, trembling lips, clenched jaw and runny makeup all over.
“P-ple” you whisper when you see his hand raise for another slap. Shutting your eyes firmly, you brace for another hard hit. Suddenly you hear shouting around the crowd of customers, who have been gathered around all along to watch your punishment.
Unable to open your eyelids from the burning pain and shame, you curl on the floor, trying to hide your sobbing and shaking body.
You hardly hear another man’s voice arguing with Miguel. They shout and scream, probably even got into a fight, but you couldn’t do anything about it. Your body is too weak, physically and emotionally.
Suddenly you feel a hand on your arm, which makes you shrug even more. Turning your head, you see him. It’s him. The Drummer, you will recognise those blue eyes anywhere.
“Let me help you up. Can you stand on your feet?” his soft voice is like a sweet melody after a hurricane. You only manage to nod in response.
Taking his hand, you quickly lift yourself up. Maybe a bit too quickly, because you find your body loosing balance for a second, but he is there. He catches you in his brace. You feel warm and secure, such a weird feeling.
“I, I… What happened?” you start.
“Hush now, everything’s quite alright.” He brushes the back of his finger over your cheek.
“Ouch” you shrug pulling your head away, as your hand instinctively reaches for it.
“Sorry.” Quikly pulls away, but meets your hand. You take his hand with your and bring it back to your cheek. Closing your eyes, you hope it’s all a nightmare and you’ll wake soon and it’ll all be gone.
Unfortunately, when you flick your eyes open, everything is the same. The pain, the ache, The Drummer.
“Come with me.” He gently tugs at your other hand.
“B-but, what? Where?” you nervously start to look around.
“He is gone. For now.” Roger leans closer to you. “You don’t have long, before he’s back. You either stay or come with me.” He instructs.
“The latter, I guess.” A glimpse of hope lights on your face.
“I was hoping you’d say that.” He smiles widely at you.
“Let’s get outta here.” He stands up taking your hand.
Leading you outside, before you could do anything about it, you see your friend waving at you. Gabriella is leaning against the doorframe, waving at you. Giving you hope.
“B-but.” You can’t quite put the pieces together.
“Let’s talk once we are away from here. Okay?” his hand squeezes yours, as he opens the door of a car for you. Taking the seat next to you, he revved up the engine. Looking through the back window, you see dust in the air, like a sandstorm and Gabriela still waving at you from the entrance of the club. The image of her and the club vanishes slowly before your eyes, like a memory fading away, waking up from a nightmare. Leaving the past behind you in a dark cloud.
Turning to look at the road in front, you see the light of the sun. A hope for a new life.
“Roger.” You murmur with your head down “Can we talk?”
He licks his lips and nods. Pulling over the side of the road, you notice you’re well out of town. You are in the middle of nowhere in fact.
“W-where are we? Where are you taking me?” you frantically look around.
He turns off the engine and takes off his dark sunglasses. You stare deep into his blue eyes, studying his face. You realise it’s the first time you see him in daylight. He is handsome, and his hair is so blonde, complimenting his eye colour.
He clenched his jaw and fists around the steering wheel. “That twat, your boss.” He shakes his head, and you see his knuckles turn white.
You head fell down to look at you trembling fingers. Taking a deep gulp you open your mouth to speak, but he speaks first.
“I. I came to see you.” He takes a breath “Only to find you on the bloody floor being beaten by him.” You sense the rage in his voice.
“It, it was my fault.” Shame burning you on the inside, you turn your head away.
“No.” he states “It was all mine actually.” His hand reaches to touch your hair, but you shrug, like a delicate flower.
“Sorry” he pulls away. “If I hadn’t followed you last night, none of this would’ve happened.”
“How?... How did he let you get away with it? Me…” you finally gain the courage to look him in the eyes. Chewing your bottom lip, you nervously swallow.
“Don’t matter.” He shakes his head “I… I felt something for you.”
Maybe it’s the rush, maybe it’s pure lust, but you let the urge take over you. You reach over and swiftly press your lips against his. Pulling away with a soft gasp, you open your eyes only to find him leaning forward for more.
“Roger.” You whisper. “Take me as far away as possible from here.” You give him a more luscious kiss, sucking on his sweet lips.
“Ss what I’m doing La Reina.”
You unbuckle your seatbelt and throw a leg over his side, straddling him with your hands on his shoulders. He pushes the seat back, as his hands gently find their way to your hips.
You hover your lips over his “I’ve craved your lips ever since” you confess.
“La Reina, is that even your real name?” he cocks his head to the side.
Maybe it’s the burning sun, or the dry weather but you feel sweating already and your breath is heavy above his lips. Inhaling his smell, you let a small chuckle.
“No” you shake your head leaning in to draw another breath off his lips.
“What is it then?” he murmurs not breaking from the kiss.
“Doesn’t matter.” You moan, pulling his bottom lip with your teeth, earning a small groan from him.
“You’re right” he breaths when you release, “You’re my queen anyway, I might as well keep calling you that.”
You smirk down on him, as your hands find their way around the back of his neck, your lips start placing small kisses under his jaw. Going slightly down his neck, your tongue peeks every now and then, as your hips grind harder and harder against his lap. Feeling his bulge growing under your legs, you can’t help but moan at the way his hands grip at your hips.
“God” he exhales the breath he is holding “and you’re all mine”
Freezing in place you slowly pull your head off his chest to give him a confused look “Yours?”
“Mhm” he reaches to kiss over your neck and sternum. Putting your hands on his shoulders to keep a steady posture, you give him a more serious voice “What do you mean?”
“Mmm, you’re so fine.” He nuzzles between your breasts. “Yes, mine. I bought you off him.”
You pull far away from his touch, extending your arms to keep the distance.
“Bought me??!”
“How do you think I got you out of there on the first place?” he gives you a victory look in his eyes.
“Unbelievable.” You shuffle and return to your seat. “I’m not an object, which you can own.” You huff.
“He owned you before me!” Roger waves his hands in the air.
“No, he did not!” you exclaim
“You’re a stripper, for god sake’s!” he yells.
“That doesn’t make me a slut. I haven’t fucked with Miguel.” You yell back.
“What about his customers, huh? If I had requested, you’ve sucked my cock too.” He yells once again.
The last words sting just as much as Miguel’s slaps, and you find yourself mortified again.
“I, I… I don’t sleep with clients or give them blowjobs for that matter.” You cry out. Getting out of the car, you shut the door close and rest your back against it.
Roger’s head falls down, as his fingers rub his eyes. “Fuck” he whispers.
“Fuck!” he utters louder. “Fuck!” he yells punching the steering wheel.
Getting out of the car and comes over to you. Leaning his back on the door, taking a pack of cigarettes off his pocket, his lips draw one off. He hands you the pack. Your eyes go from him to the pack and back, before your trembling fingers take one out.
“Mso sorry.” he mumbles, puffing out smoke.
“I guess I deserved it too.” You look up to the twilight sky, swiping the sweat off your temple.
The two of you finish your cigarettes in silence, but you can tell the tension lifting. Hopping back in your seats you both stare at the dusty road ahead of you.
“Just get me out of this miserable shithole, Roger.”
“I was hoping you’d say that.” He brings your hand up to his lips to place a soft kiss over your knuckles.
You give him a soft smile and squeeze his hand in reassurance.
“I promise I won’t disappoint you.” He looks over your knuckles “if you let me”
“I knew, you were something else from the moment you walked in that club, Drummer.”
He smiles back at you, driving off into the sunset. You bite your lip, dreaming about the new future awaiting you, hoping for a better life.
A/n: I wasn’t intentionally planning on doing a second chapter, but  i’m starting to think about what happens after? Where does he take her? How he introduces to her his life and career, how he explains it to the band? How does their relationship take off from there , and is it as good as she thought it would be?
