This is a hot take but am I the only queer person who HATES heartstopper with a burning passion. I wrote an essay on it so here it is:

I remember when Heartstopper came out as a Netflix series, my other Igbt friends were obsessed with it. So I tried watching Heartstopper, I enjoyed it at first but then it just got kind of exploitative of the Igbta community and feminine gay men especially. I feel as though the creator of Heartstopper, Alice Oseman, has never interacted with a "non stereotypical" gay person because of the way Nick and Charlie act in the book and in the TV show. The whole "hi" shtick is down right cringey. As somebody who realized they were gay in late 6th grade I've had my fare share of jr. high and highschool queer experiences which have never even come close to what is portrayed in Heartstopper. I also feel as though Netflix and other companies are profiting off of the trend of acceptance, and Heartstopper is a pawn in the game of profiting off of minorities and false care. The fact that there are so many queer pieces of media made by real queer people pre-2010's such as "But I'm a cheerleader" "Falsettos", "In Trousers", and "Brokeback Mountain" (which I'm surprised less people had heard about than I thought) just to name a few. All of these pieces of queer media I listed came out before gay marriage was legal and for falsettos and in trousers, in the SEVENTIES , and they're all leaps and bounds better than Heartstopper. As well as the show itself being awful, the fan base is terrible too. From fetishizing Nick and Charlie to literally forcing Kit Conner to come out. Most of the Heartstopper fandom consists of straight teenage girls which makes a lot of sense thinking about it. Now, the second season came out in august and it is just as terrible. The romanticization of eating disorders is disgusting, same with the fact of the fan base making jokes about Charlie's mental illnesses are horrible. Heartstopper is just an all around bad television show, but I would like to hear others opinions.

✮ Thoughts ✮:

Reclaiming terms from people who use it against us will always be a favourite of mine. My personal thoughts about these things is that reclaiming these things are a powerful way to show we aren’t going to be bullied into submission and change ourselves to be palatable to anyone outside neurodivergent, mentally ill, queer, poc, spiritual communities. I have many opinions I cannot out into words because I don’t know how.
