So I'm currently working on 3 projects at once. In preparation for my eventual 300 subs special. (Don't forget to subs y'all).

# 1 is my conclusion to Jaune Arc's children fic which already 2/3rd done. And can be released this week. (Next week if I'm feeling kinda lazy.)

# 2. I'm currently writing on the 1st chapter 10k words of "Jaune's Big Dick Adventure" Don't let the name fool you... It's about a whale actually (A Whale Grimm). It will deals with topics about loss, revenge and forgiveness by telling it through the story of Moby Dick. It serves as a sequel to Ice Queendom and the video game RWBY Grimm Eclipse. I will post only the 1st chapter & if it gets more likes I will continue the story until it's complete. I already have the rough outline for about 30 chapters worth of story. (And yes the title is a reference to Jojo Bizarre Adventure.)

#3 Is more of a hobby fic that I got way too absorbed in. I'll post it in Ao3 maybe sometimes in the future. Or maybe not.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. RWBY version.

Jaune cannot believe his eyes when he wakes up in what seems to be a paradise. He almost wants to believe that AM is giving him this place as a reward after what feels like centuries of torture inside this hellish nightmare he and others has found himselves in. No he desperately wants to believe in it. That maybe AM has gone tired of torturing him. And that maybe AM is satisfied after breaking him, tearing him apart and putting him back together. Only to repeat the process over and over again. He wants it to stop. He wants it to end. He wants to die... Jaune wants to die.

But AM will not let him. He would not let Jaune die. He forbids it. Because if Jaune dies then that means there will be one less toy for AM to play with. And Jaune knows this. This place he's seeing now is a trick. AM is especially fond of this trick. To give his victim hope only to snatch it away. He refuses to play anymore of AM's game. If he wants to kill him again he better just do it straight away instead of playing this sick mind game. He wants to leave. But he can't. And if he even somehow managed to leave what even awaits him in the outside. He's been here for so long he can't even remember anything or anyone from out side anymore. He can only remembers one thing though. A girl in red but whenever Jaune thinks of her he can't help but to feel an indescribable feeling towards the girl. AM knows of this of course and took delight when he realizes he can use this bit of information to torture him. Sometimes AM materializes her only to have her violently dies in front of him and sometimes she kill Jaune instead. And sometimes when AM is feeling extra sadistic she let him marry Jaune Have children with her raised them up over the years only to have them murdered in front of Jaune's eyes... Anyone would have been driven mad by this, but AM not only keep him alive but also kept him sane. But every time AM let him see her even though she's not real. And he can't remember her name It's worth the torture just to see her again. Feeling her soft hair in his hands and smelling her rose like scent... I can almost remember her name. I-I need to get out of here... At least it can't be worse than here anyway.

But when decided to walk away. AM then suddenly appears in front of him. Jaune instinctively tries to run away from him. But AM quickly captured him with his cold metallic hands. The same hands he used to torture Jaune for century. Jaune feared the worst but to his surprise he simply let places Jaune besides him.

AM: He, he... Beautiful, aren't they?

Jaune: Yes.... Only I can't remember. *terrified*

AM: Oh, I'm sure you do.

Jaune: Y-yes of course.

AM: Look. *points at a bee* He, he... They said bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly. The scientists said.

Looking back at the 1st Nightmare Arc

Well folks, here we are.  It’s the end of the year and I successfully completed Season VI’s first arc!  Today, it’s all about celebrating with an honest take on how I feel it all went down. No backstories on what took so long this time.  Just all Mega lore and analyzing whatever I’ve managed to create in the Fanon.  So let’s dive into it.  This was an interesting one:

tl;dr?  -  Ep. 1: Boring Beginning, Exciting Middle Ep. 2: Steady Solid Stage! Ep. 3: Long Stage, Big Payoff Ep. 4: Strong Start, Very Expository Ep. 5: Another Long Stage, but not Draining Ep. 6: Reverse Pacing Ep. 7: Epic. As. Fuck.

Ep. 1:  I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but Boring Beginning. I wanted it to start just like the game with the exciting narrative intro, except.. written out, it’s not all that exciting, but instead - expected.  The same goes for Gate’s immediate monologue when you press start.  I took the safe, easy route and just added stage directions to his discovery of Zero’s “piece”.  Regardless, this was “A Broken World”, and I loved that title for a new Season #1.  Honestly, I feel like this one really picks up from the middle, onward.  Once we get into X’s first mission, the addition of the new reploids from the X5 ending didn’t really help at all.  I got rid of them almost as soon as I introduced them, but it was supposed to serve a purpose.  It was supposed to show us just how dangerous it is out there for noobies - especially the ones who think they know it all, like Cody.  Once X fights High Max though, we almost mirrored the X1 feeling, which is exactly what I wanted.  From here on, it’s pretty exciting and interesting to me.  Because now X is all intrigued and worried about these new “Investigators” that have sprouted up.  Giving X someone to fear again with High Max made for a really refreshing touch, too.  Once he gets home to learn about them from Alia, the episode heavily leans on flashbacks from Xtreme 2, but they serve as a nice re-introduction to our 8 Investigators. I also really liked their Re-activation scene.  That mirrored the vibe from Mega Missions when Doppler revived his select batch of Mavericks.  Once they pinpoint their locations and X finds out that 3 of the Investigators are in Brazil, he wants to go there first.  I feel such a hyped jolt of excitement at that Cliffhanger.

Ep. 2:  Steady Solid Stage! It took forever to write out, but upon reading it, the pacing is surprisingly smooth as X explores the Amazon Forest. Calling it “The Nightmare Is Real” based on a random Rescued Reploid’s words was a little weak at first, but it comes back around to get real meaning by the end. During the stage, X’s dialogue with Iso kept things interesting, while he pursued that near-impossible sub-tank. [I swear, you can only acquire this with a jump part equipped, or exposing AI with the fire blade or something...]. I really really didn’t want X to use his Ultimate Armor so soon, for nothing, because I’ve added stakes to such a game-breaking power up.  If he uses it, he blows out all of his stamina and needs to rest.  Period.  Using this to rescue Iso was not only a waste, but things probably would’ve gone down very differently, later.  Anyway, that fight with Commander Yammark was perfect. At first, I thought it was a little short, but looking back on it, I love how they both get solid blows in, but then come to a standstill when they realize they’re on the same side. Having Nightmare Zero intervene was absolutely the right choice!!  It gave us a new hook for something to come back to, as yet again, X had someone new to fear, like in X1.  Since it’s an evil Zero, I’ll even say like X2.  This is where the title “The Nightmare is Real” works, because... the Zero Nightmare was absolutely a sentient problem.  And it wasn’t going away any time soon.  X had to retreat and get out of there.  Thank God for Alia’s force-teleporting. Pushing Alia's Love Interest during the debrief was also a very exciting development.  I knew I wanted to do this, but at first I wasn’t sure if it was too soon to happen right here.  Now, I feel like it was just right. 

 Ep. 3:  Long stage, big payoff. Starting with Isoc’s report to Gate was actually not as boring as the 1st episode canon scenes. I made more of an effort to wake the scene up with stage directions or dialogue that makes more sense...  Them talking about the possibility of Zero still being alive also sets up mysterious intrigue.  Is he still out there??  And if so, how???  Will we see him???? Naming the entire episode, “The Outlier”, however is misleading.  I suppose that could connect to Ground Scaravich, who wasn’t one of Gate’s original creations (in my Fanon).  Still, giving X & Alia that slice of life romantic wake up scene at the near-beginning was absolutely refreshing.  Not only that, but I think it was very necessary. Things are all Doom and Gloom this Season, which is my forte, but this shows that at Home you can still find happiness in Loved ones.  The actual stage itself was an absolute pain in the ass and I knew it was going to be. I'm just glad it didn't completely burn me out.  His fight with Ground Scaravich was bad ass though.  X had the rare upper hand from the get-go as the menacer that Scaravich was afraid of.  So he came in with confident energy and tried to beat him down for information.  Of course, Scaravich didn’t let up and only revealed worse information, that those Reploids were being used for DNA Data.  But that cliffhanger I left at the end, with Zero Nightmare applauding X for his kill...!  It definitely helped me pursue a much sooner Chapter 4. 

 Ep. 4:  Strong Start with the Zero Nightmare fight. I had a big challenge here, because I didn’t want X to win yet.  We needed to build this feud and drag it out as much as possible. Zero Nightmare was gaining new motivation. He apparently knows about Zero’s existence, but thinks of him as a Fake.  And thus we have the title “Where Is The Fake?”. Having X get weakened and willingly teleport away was a really mature choice. I think it shows growth.  He could’ve done that plenty of times in the past.  But here we go, X is wounded again.. I didn't want this to become a trope or slow us down, but it brought upon some very necessary world building and character development for the new reploids. Very much, the expository episode, this was an important chapter, because it set up things for future episodes and kept me on track, months later when it was time to think about the bigger picture. Kassy & Hal went to the Magma Area while Tack checked out the Laser Institute.  The Nightmare System was in full effect now, and the goal was to show how dangerous the Nightmare actually is to some red shirts, before X goes in there.  How effective that actually was in my execution, remains to be seen.  At this point the episode title remains prominent, because X expresses sincere interest in finding the Real Zero, but they have... zero leads. (Sorry, I had to.)  The Villains even had an interesting follow-up about Scaravich’s death and there was an interaction, which vaguely eluded to something new happening, from Metal Shark.  So that will be something fun to look forward to.  Ending at the beginning of a new stage is always a cool cliffhanger. Believe it or not, I wanted this to go all the way through the Rainy Turtloid stage, which would have given the title prominence for a 3rd time.  But that’s okay.

 Ep. 5:  Another Long Stage, but its not half as draining as the Central Museum. In fact, all of the Reploid Interactions kept it really lively. Especially by the end. The Inami Temple was the first stage that I could hint at our location with the episode title - “Nightmare Rain”.  I wish I could’ve done that for the previous episodes, but it’s alright.  I took some interesting risks, during this stage write-through.  I almost forgot about that frickin Monbando Reploid unit. I took a real risk by giving him an AI, but he keeps things interesting, giving X someone to talk to, which actually added levity to the situation where appropriate. That Nightmare Zero encounter mid-stage was what it was all about for me, though. I'm really proud of that one, using the stage layout to my advantage in an innovative way. All of that Levy stuff with Rescue Reploid 6 was another interesting choice. I have more in store for her, but I'm really hoping there will be more of a payoff, than just an Easter Egg Cameo. We’ll see. I’m looking forward to seeing what else I can do with her in the next arc.  Need I bring up X’s Reploid rescues in the Gaia Armor!??  That was a bright idea that I came up with after post-planning.  The original plan was to have X revisit the stage later, but I thought about how this Acid Rain was killing them, so...  time to settle the issue of an unused Armor. [X6 granting us the gift of using a modified Fifth Armor was nice, but it made me wonder, why can’t he access the Gaia anymore?]. The answer was just that he doesn’t really like it.  But he used it to his advantage here, and now I had a new challenge ahead of me. I had to get rid of it. Another challenge was posed when X discovered a fucking portal in one of the tunnels.  I wasn’t prepared for that!  But thankfully, I was able to come up with a viable excuse rather than just X being scared of the portal.  He ran out of teleporter rings!!!!  This gave me new Fanon Mega-science to add to the stakes.  Teleporter Rings now need a day to recharge, and it was clear that plenty more needed to be made.  This gave Alia & Douglas something to do, so in the end, this was all good.  But now it was time for X to face off against Rainy Turtloid.  He’d have to come back for the others later. [Time will tell, how well or poorly that is handled, depending on how long it takes X to actually get back there.]

 Ep. 6:  This one basically had Reverse Pacing, but I liked it. It started with a Climactic, Rainy Turtloid fight. I mean, this was Epic and fucking Brutal.  Thanks to my brilliant bring-back of the Gaia Armor, now Turtloid had to take it away and break the shit out of it. This is where “The Fight Becomes Dire” and I thought it was amazing.  In my planning phase, that was never remotely on the table, but it worked out wonderfully.  What was on the table was X possibly using his Ultimate Armor if the battle got too brutal, but I wanted to avoid that.  [I had done practice playthroughs where I managed to get X to win in Normal Armor and definitely in Falcon Armor with some select weapon spamming and pattern memorizing.  I was open to keeping it simple, I really was.]. But after X got smacked around like a bitch, it was time for payback.  Especially considering Turtloid’s motivation to fight was “But I have to listen to Master...”  Here we had the interesting case that both Men respected each other and didn’t want to fight, but they had to. {Even though X thought the Reploid Trapping and Nightmare acceptance was reprehensible}. X primarily focussed on that and tried to change Turtloid’s mind, but once his Gaia Armor was destroyed and X nearly died, it was time for some Ultimate payback.  I’m really surprised by how epic and dark it got. I’m very proud of it.  After the mission, due to some very necessary stakes and power limiters, X had to sit out for a day again, once again slowing our pacing down to a screeching halt. This one hurt me, I think.  At least he wasn't injured this time... As I stated before, when I made the decision to include the Ultimate Armor into this Season, I did so knowing that there needed to be a price. It comes with him using up all his stamina. Therefore, he can't spam it with every mission or battle. The same rules applied to his shotokan moves in Season I & II, which have basically been replaced by the Ultimate Armor at this point. With more opportunity at exposition, however, I was able to follow up on the new reploids, who were now in trouble at their respective missions. [This is the stuff I needed to give X motivation for his mission choices during the planning phase, but it just wasn’t there]. And yet, one was debatably set up too soon. I had a new dilemma, where X was forced to sit out, while Kassy & Hal are stuck at the Magma Area, hurt.  The choice to show X training the recruits in the meantime was a fun risk to take though. It showed productivity and progress in the downtime, hopefully eluding to the idea that these newbies can fend for themselves, while it inevitably takes X a while to save them in the future. I also got to develop Levy more and even create some juicy tension between her and Alia, which wasn’t originally planned. I had intended for a 2nd sex scene with Alia to happen at some point, but I didn't want it to be forced. Just more of an implied - ‘this is what’s happening while we wait’.  But the addition of Levy’s flirting played into Alia’s insecurities, which gave it more of a purpose.  And poor Douglas! Hahahaha.  I was so tickled when I put that in out of nowhere.  We got some much needed levity when he wanted to show X a new part, but instead he overheard them having sex and walked away with a “Nope!” lol!!! Its becoming very clear that I enjoy the in-between mission slice of life stuff Way more than the missions themselves. But then, when we get back to it... after X gave it a night, he and Signas found every excuse not to save Kassy & Hal yet, because my Stage Order plan still needed to be in play...  At least Tack discovered that Portal at Sheldon’s stage. This saved my Stage Order Motivation, but it was still weak.  If only Zero was around, then they could split the difference.  But what I liked about this was that it showed just how bad of shape that X and co. were in.  Yet again, the episode title remained prominent.  “The Fight Becomes Dire”!  The truth is, they were all over the place and X didn't know where to go first. For the first time in a while, our Hunters are overwhelmed and understaffed. And that was really noticeable here.  I still think the ending is kinda weak though. There's no real cliffhanger other than knowing that X will pursue Shield Sheldon next. But overall, I liked the flow of this. There's a lot of forced slow downs in the momentum to have us sit with the characters and their decisions. It makes for a very different, sort of dismal pacing, which adds to the atmosphere of this looming Nightmare that won’t go away.  One noticeable thing, however is that I failed to follow up on the Villains this time around. I had an ample opportunity to follow up on Gate’s thoughts for losing Turtloid again, who was debatably his favorite creation.  I really botched that up, but I simply didn’t think of it at the time before posting.  So who knows?  That could be possible room for improvement in a future edit.  Either way, the Villains are sure to be due for a check in soon. 

 Ep. 7:  Epic. As. Fuck. But it took a minute to get there. Shield Sheldon's stage was more complicated to write through than I originally thought. Its the shortest stage in the game and yet all those damn lasers and their angles made for quite the challenge. This in itself, was a “Laser Light Phenomena”. Another immense challenge that I wasn't expecting was Sheldon's battle completely Flipping the Narrative on X. Admittedly, I really had a hard time finding motivation for those 2 to feud. Especially since he wasn't holding a grudge based on the past. I noticed a while ago, all of Gate's creations are so very willing to sacrifice themselves for Gate's cause. Like, to a nonsensical degree. Maybe that's their degree of Maverickism. They're just crazy... Anyway, this Deadlock Standstill might really play into my favor, since this recent Portal Experience is going to change X's motivations. I... don't want X to take a backseat, but... Rescuing the Reploids is going to be his 1st Priority from here on in. Especially since he wasn't able to save Tack and the bunch. Again, thats where stakes come into play. I didn't come into this episode knowing I was going to make that decision. But when I saw the layout of the "Pocket Dimension" as I'm calling it, and I factored in the time Tack spent in there, trying to rescue the Reploids by himself, there was no way I could have them all just hang out at a narrow ledge by the gate, or stuck in the gateway, scared. I wasn't gonna pull a lame idea that they managed to somehow unlock the gate, like I did with Data. (That can be the one trait that makes Data special and could play into his advantage in the future. But no one else's). Nightmare Zero wouldn't spare them either. He'd absolutely kill them in bloodlust. So... stakes were created. X took too long to catch up to him and thats what he gets. That last battle with ZN though... I'm really proud of where it went. I had some obvious limits this time compared to past Zero fights. That could be an analysis for another time.. But, I was happy to get pretty gorey by the end, there. And that pay off Cliff Hanger was so satisfying! It gives me all the feels. 

The 2nd Arc is going to feel very different. But we ain't out of the woods yet. Rereading the 1st Arc served as a dual purpose. Not only could I gush about my favorite moments or be open about my choices and how things came out, but it is starting to reveal where else it's going. Kassy & Hal still need rescuing at the Magma Area. Cody & Data are at the North Pole! Tekk is at the Weapon Center. X still needs to save whoever is in the portal at Inami Temple!  Let alone revisiting the Amazon and Central Museum again.  Exposition is just waiting to happen, and now that Zero is back?? Things are going to get easier, but also a little bit harder for X. One thing I can definitely say is that seeing him will bring back some Unwanted Memories. And its gonna be very interesting to see how he deals with that. I'm definitely looking forward to writing the 2nd Arc out in the New Year.

A list of my personal Loki series fears and wishes

As the first episode draws near, I just wanted to make a list of everything I can think of that I'm afraid of and the things I'm hoping for in the Loki series and there are probably things I'm forgetting because god there's so MUCH. These are just rough lists and my personal thoughts at the moment, and some are really important and some are fairly trivial (and also range all over the place in terms of how realistic they are). I mainly just want to be able to look back at this post when the series has finished and see what came true and what didn't.

Fears (in no particular order):

TVA and/or Timekeepers framed as the good guys

Mobius is toxic (I'm really hoping he won't be! Loki needs a friend!)

The things wrong in Loki's life being framed as entirely his fault and Loki's family/Asgard/Thanos are not held accountable

Loki's trauma not addressed in general

Basically Loki recognizes his behaviors that are harmful to himself/others (in itself, not a bad thing!) but doesn't get to see some of the reasons WHY he behaves that way in the first place (he didn't come out of the womb with all these issues - we can easily point to several specific people who essentially made him the way he is). If the latter isn't part of his self-reflection, I think it'll feel pretty victim blame-y.

Retcons Loki's almost-deaths as faking, rather than a suicide attempt (1st) and a sacrifice (2nd)

The show "confirming" things that are objectively not true - such as Sif/Warriors 3 were actually good friends to him, Odin was a good father, Thanos didn't torture and/or brainwash Loki, etc.

The show's framing of incorrect things Mobius says about Loki/ Loki's responses to him saying those things (death and destruction everywhere you go, stabbed people in the back 50x, possibly other things we haven't seen yet...I'm really hoping "I'd never do it again" is edited and it's a response to something else but I really doubt it.)

It's just that, with Mobius M. "I've Studied Every Moment Of Your Entire Life" Mobius, there are....a lot of opportunities for gaslighting both Loki and the audience, so this is the worst fear for me at this point.

Loki actually says "crap" (it's not just a trailer edit)

Not feeling like Loki/characterization feeling off in general

Handling the genderfluid thing badly (the fact they used the term sex and not gender could be a way to act like they have representation but not have to actually make him queer)

No confirmation or even hints of his queerness in terms of sexuality

Continuing to ignore the Jotun stuff like the films have

The DB Cooper look will last longer than a few minutes (the short hair just doesn't feel like Loki, ok? I'm hoping that part will be very brief)

Various fanon things we've all collectively decided on that I'm personally attached to end up not being true (like Loki liking cats and having a sweet tooth)

Edit - I forgot one of the most obvious ones, which is that the ending will be bad. I just want my son to be happy and for this show not to end with him in a miserable situation, or dead, or in some other form of nonexistence (such as the series ending with kid Loki or something).

Mobius ends up being an actual good friend to Loki (I'm hoping for Mobius to basically have an arc of "mostly good person working for bad people, realizes the organization he supports isn't what he thought, and eventually turns against them." Or something like that.)

For somebody to fucking hug him (in a way that he actually likes and isn't just somebody violating his space)

Just. Loki tears. (I need that emotional whump, damn it)

A scene where Loki wakes up from a nightmare

Short Reflection: Winter 2021 Anime

Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in between, breathe easy: anime is finally good again. After a dismal 2020 full of Covid delays, disappointments, and one lackluster flop after another, it was tempting to give up on the medium entirely. But at long last, our long nightmare is coming to an end, because Winter 2021 has been absolutely fucking fantastic. So many incredible shows have graced our screens this season, countless unexpected surprises that feel like the new face of modern anime slowly taking shape. I loved watching anime this season, and even a lot of the ones that ultimately disappointed me were still head and shoulders above the also-rans of last year. Sadly, I won’t be talking about my three favorite winter 2021 shows in this post- Attack on Titan S4, Wonder Egg Priority, and Re:Zero S2- because I have not yet finished them (or, in AOT and WEP’s case, they are not yet finished themselves), and it wouldn’t be fair to give them a score until I get the full picture. But even taking those three masterpieces out of the running, this season still puts the entirety of 2020 to shame. It’s a new dawn for anime, folks, and it’s looking like a very bright dawn indeed. So kick back and relax as I gush about the shows that made winter 2021 such a goddamn blast.

So I’m a Spider, So What? (1st Half): Unfinished/10

I am, perhaps fittingly, of many minds about Spider Isekai. On the one hand, it’s a vehicle for the incredible Aoi Yuuki to ham it up to 11 and back as the frenetic, hyperactive girl-reincarnated-as-spider-in-a-JRPG-world of the title, fighting tooth and nail to survive and escape a dangerous labyrinth from the lowest- and most dangerous- levels up. On the other hand, it also reincarnates the rest of her class into an utterly bog-standard isekai mushburger that takes up way too much time for how uninteresting it is and still hasn’t connected with the spider plot in any meaningful way, thus feeling like a needlessly dragged-out filler plot. On the other other hand, there are actually some interesting things happening in the show’s bigger plot, and as the lore of the world itself becomes more prominent, it becomes clear there is a much better story at play here than what we’re currently privy to. There’s secrets, hidden history, mysterious foes that don’t fit neatly into dull bad guy tropes, and a sense that things have only really started kicking off. So for the time being, I’m going to leave Spider Isekai scoreless and wait to see where all its pieces end up falling. It could turn out great or completely shit the bed, but either way, there are too many unanswered questions for me to feel comfortable giving its first half a concrete number. Hopefully, the promise it’s started to show won’t be squandered.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2: 3/10

I remember back when I watched the first season of Slime, I was almost tricked into liking it. The first arc is just good enough, with genuine emotional stakes and beautiful animation, that it felt like the breath of fresh air the isekai genre needed. But then as it dragged on and on, it quickly became clear that this was ultimately just another mediocre, uninspired power fantasy averse to any real stakes or narrative consequences, with no real interest beyond buffing its OP protagonist to increasingly meaningless heights of power, fame and adoration. The only thing it had going for it were those pretty production values, and even those took a noticeable downturn as the season wore on. And even by those low standards, Slime season 2 manages to be a crushing disappointment. This season almost manages to push Rimuru out of his comfort zone and have him genuinely suffer, but then it drops a fix-all solution into his lap and lets him easily reverse all the damage, and the only lasting consequence is that he gets even more stupidly overpowered and unbeatable. And that just pisses me off. It turns out, the only thing worse than not having stakes at all is pretending to have stakes only to chicken out at the last minute. At this point, I’d be fine just burning the entirety of modern isekai sans Re:Zero to the ground, salting the earth, and starting over fresh. Otherwise these shows are just gonna keep cropping up like unwanted weeds, choking the garden of anime to death.

On the bright side, though, at least now I know who to blame for planting these weeds in the first place...

Mushoku Tensei: 4/10

Mushoku Tensei is a show that’s actively painful to watch, not just because it’s bad, but because I so desperately want it to be good. This is the first isekai in forever that feels like it takes place in a living, breathing world, populated by actual people and deep history. And the animation by Studio Bind, which was formed just to make this show happen, is utterly beautiful. This is the best-looking, most instantly magical fantasy anime we’ve had since at least Made in Abyss, possibly the most impressive production of the season (no small feel, considering the competition), a product of so much obvious talent and love I want to champion it on principle alone. But the moment Mushoku Tensei stops wowing you with stunning cuts of magic spells and gorgeous vistas and returns its focus to its plot and characters, you’re forced to remember that this was based on one of the earliest, most influential isekai web novels, and is thus responsible for literally every reason modern isekai sucks so hard. The protagonist is a pedophile and attempted rapist who barely gets so much as a slap on the wrist, the world bends around him to make him as much of an overpowered chick magnet as it possibly can, it alternately fetishizes and ignores its female cast, and the whole plot is an excuse for an incel loser to live in a world that all but caters to his every whim, a power fantasy where the worst scum can live out their dream life without ever fixing what made them scum in the first place. And at that point, all the jaw-dropping animation starts to feel like an insult. In an anime industry where ever the best shows are plagued with production issues, why are we forming new studios and pouring so much talent into them just to polish this turd to a mirror shine? Surely all that passion would be better spend somewhere, anywhere else. But no, Stars Align gets sliced in half mid-production and left to rot while the Rapey Baby anime gets the VIP treatment. And people wonder why this industry is so fucking broken.

Dr. Stone Season 2: 5/10

Dr. Stone’s biggest problem is that it’s a seasonal anime that’s paced and produced like a long-running anime. Every scene is torturously drawn out, it almost never looks good in motion, and the gags and dialogue all skew so juvenile that it’s all but impossible to take seriously. Which is a shame, because at heart, the idea of a shonen scientist superhero using the power of human knowledge to restore society thousands of years after its collapse is just really damn cool. And there are great moments throughout season 2. Homura’s capture, Chrome’s jailbreak, and the final tag-team showdown all showcase what Dr Stone is capable of at its best. But they’re too infrequent between the screechy voice acting, the plodding pace, and the moments that are just straight up stupid (Listen, I know we call joke about how drawn-out shonen anime can be, but normally they don’t put focus on the fact that they’re stretching 20 seconds out to ten minutes). Also, let’s be honest here, Boichi’s female character designs suck. They look like blow-up sex dolls with skulls the shape of alien fish people, it’s freaking weird, man.

Quintessential Quintuplets Season 2: 5/10

Sometimes, I wonder why I keep giving Quints the benefit of the doubt. It’s mostly as dumb as the vast majority of harem comedies, it’s never had a good production to back it up, and the gag of Fuutaro not being able to tell the girls apart just does not work in animation when you can instantly tell who everyone is from their hair colors and voices. And somehow, season 2 is an even worse adaptation than season 1, skipping huge chunks of content and condensing arcs into way-too-small stretches of time. I didn’t think it was even possible to do worse than Tezuka Productions, yet Studio Bibury has found a way. But then every once in a while, it’ll land a joke that really makes me laugh or an emotional beat that rings true, and I’ll remember: this is, like, the one harem comedy that actually cares about its girls beyond their roles as waifu bait. This is the one harem comedy where the characters are actual characters, with chemistry and developed relationships and all that jazz. And then I get depressed that the bar for harem comedies is so fucking low that this lukewarm, middlebrow time waster gets to be held up as a paragon of the genre just for not fucking up in the ways most harem comedies fuck up. Surely, this genre can do better.

Otherside Picnic: 5.5/10

Director Satou Takuya has lead an interesting career, leading projects ranging from urban horror (Steins;Gate) to soft yuri (Kase-san) and everything in between. Now, he finally gets to put those two ends of the spectrum together with Otherside Picnic, a show about two college girls exploring a spooky netherworld parallel to our own universe, filled with urban legends and mysterious fears of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, while there’s plenty of charm in Sorawo and Toriko’s interactions, and the high-concept abominations they encounter are all unique, the finished product reeks of a poor adaptation that dampens the strengths of the original novels. Lidenfilms’ production leaves a lot to be desired, with limited animation and lackluster visual flair that takes away from the awe and terror of the other world. And it feels like a lot of character definition has been cut to streamline the story, weakening the impact of Sorawo and Toriko’s developing bond. I still enjoyed it, but in fits and spurts and not as a complete package. Unless you’re a diehard anime-only like myself, I’d probably suggest tracking down the novels to get this story in its best form. Because even though I haven’t read them myself, I can tell that this adaption really doesn’t do them justice.

2.43 Seinn Boys High School Volleyball Club: 6/10

What happens when you cross the spirited volleyball games of Haikyuu with the melodramatic, thickly tonal atmosphere of Stars Align? You get this ridiculously named show that sadly ends up less than the some of its parts. There’s some great meaty character work in this tale of best friends driven apart and struggling to reconnect on the volleyball court, and the volleyball matches themselves might actually be more impressively animated than Haikyuu’s most recent season. Seriously, the sports action in this show kicks ass. Unfortunately, the writing and overall structure feels unfocused and compromised in a lot of ways. At times it’s too melodramatic to the point of choking itself to death, and then it backtracks on the best parts of that melodrama by erasing one of the main characters’ darkest, most compelling mistakes with a “Syke! Didn’t actually happen.” It also feels like it’s rushing through a lot of story beats; some arcs feel overly truncated, robbing them of their impact. But every time I felt myself losing interest, the fantastically written friendships between the cast members and spectacular volleyball action drew me back in. This may be an imperfect show, but it’s got some damn impressive highs that make it worth at least a look.

Vlad Love: 6.5/10

Let’s get one thing straight: You are not high enough to watch Vlad Love. You will never be high enough to watch Vlad Love. But you should still absolutely watch Vlad Love. From the mind of legendary director Mamori Oshii comes what I can only describe as an anime shitpost, ostensibly a slapstick yuri rom-com about a blood donation enthusiast who falls in love with a vampire but really just an excuse for Oshii to do whatever the fuck he wants and talk about whatever the fuck interests him. Characters constantly break the fourth wall, jokes are driven into the dirt to the point they somehow loop back around to being funny again, and the plot constantly stops cold so the show can infodump on everything from military technology to Japan’s political history to international cinema to classic video games and basically whatever the hell else Oshii decided he wanted The Youths today to know about, often with the characters explicitly pointing out how ridiculous it is that we’re grinding to a halt to do so. It’s loud, abrasive, nonsensical, and it seemingly dares the audience to see how long they can put up with its ridiculous antics. I honestly don’t know if this show’s even good; all I know is that I enjoyed every bizarre moment of it. So check it out for yourself; something this batshit crazy and original at least deserves a chance.

Horimiya: 7.5/10

There’s something deeply refreshing about Horimiya being as popular and beloved as it is. This is a straightforward rom-com with no unique twist, no narrative gimmick, and no real overarching plot. It’s just about a bunch of high schoolers going through life, falling in love, discovering themselves, and making the most of their youth while they still can. And even with no frills whatsoever, it’s still one of the most delightful shows of the season. How wonderful is it that an anime can get this popular with no wild premise to goose its appeal? That nothing more than well-told romance between a cast of lovable characters, aided by some fantastically evocative direction, is enough to get people singing its praises? That simply nailing the particular feeling of discovering love in your last year of high school is enough to earn this show’s place as an all-time rom-com classic? That even a romance as sweet and vanilla as Horimiya isn’t afraid to actually let its central couple get together and explore life within their relationship, including sex and kink? Yes, it sucks that the adaptation is so rushed; too many characters are shortchanged by the cramped pacing, and it feels like so many wonderful details and connective tissue got left by the wayside. But man, even this imperfect version is enough to restore my faith in popular anime’s ability to work wonders.

Jujutsu Kaisen: 7.5/10

I’m not gonna lie, I was starting to lose interest in Jujutsu Kaisen going into its back half. And thinking back on it, I’ve realized that this show’s writing kinda sucks at staying focused. Hey, remember Yuuji’s regular high school friends? Cause Yuuji sure doesn’t. Also, we introduced the requisite shonen power trio just a few episodes in, only to completely sideline their dynamic until the end of the season (side note, between this and Dr. Stone, what is with modern shonen breaking up the central trio for huge stretches of time right after establishing them?) It just cannot pick one thing to focus on, jumping between ideas erratically and abandoning them just as quickly. So why do I still rate it so highly? Because sweet merciful Bhudda this show kicks so much ass. Every action scene is a winner, every episode is slathered in high-quality sakuga, every character absolutely drips with attitude, and the entire production exudes the kind of effortlessly cool enthusiasm you just can’t help but love. Watching Jujutsu Kaisen is a blast, and it feels like it’s finally started finding its focus now that Yuuji, Nobara and Megumi are on screen together for the first time in ages. This may be shonen junk food, but it’s junk food of the highest caliber, and I can’t wait for what comes next.

Yuru Camp Season 2: 8/10

I was just getting into anime around the winter of 2018, so one of the earliest shows I watched was Yuru Camp’s first season. While I enjoyed it overall and gave it a 7/10, it didn’t leave that much of a lasting impression on me (beyond its fantastic OP, at least). It was just a cute, fun show with good atmosphere, nothing more, nothing less. But something must have changed in the intervening years, because man, I really got swept up in season 2. Maybe my tastes have grown more accustomed to heavily atmospheric shows like this one, maybe being shut inside for over a year has left me longing for anything that reminds me of the beautiful outdoors, or maybe this season really has stepped things up. Whatever the reason, I found myself falling hard for Yuru Camp’s second season and its weekly dose of comfy atmosphere, god-tier face game, real-life camping advice, and quiet rumination on the nature of doing something you love alone vs with friends. There’s something really special about this show, an unassuming sense of wonder and warmth that grows on you little by little until it lodges permanently in the comfort center of your brain. I remember so many moments from this season that just made me sit back and breathe, taking in the world around me and the beauty it was capable of. And in these tense times, a show this good at helping you relax is a show worth celebrating. Who knows? Maybe I’ll inspire me to go camping for the first time in over a decade.

SK8 the Infinity: 8.5/10

The best way I can describe SK8 the Infinity is that it does for pretty sports boys what Symphogear does for magical girls. It’s a ridiculous, bombastic, over-the-top spectacle of itself that somehow manages to be 100% sincere about how utterly, amazingly stupid it is. And with the combined talents of Hiroko Utsumi (Banana Fish, Free) and Ichirou Ookouchi (Code Geass, Princess Principal) at the helm, not to mention Studio Bones’ money to throw around, the result is nothing less than amazing. Every single skateboard race is utterly bonkers, every single character is ridiculously lovable, and it bursts with passions and swagger and a deep-rooted earnestness that makes even its most ludicrous moments shine with emotional reverence. And as if that wasn’t enough, the man villain is the voice actor of DIO himself playing an over-the-top matador who dances the flamenco on his board and absolutely fucking devours the scenery in a way that never fails to leave me cackling. It’s simultaneously impossible to take seriously and yet so self-confidently itself that you can’t help but take it seriously. If only it had committed to being actually gay instead of just endlessly teasing it, this might have risen to a true masterpiece. As is, though, it’s still one of the most deliriously fun anime I’ve watched in a long time, a sports show by way of a wrestling pageant that constantly tops itself in sheer entertainment value. So grab your skateboard, put your flashiest BL goggles on, and let SK8 sweep you into infinity!

My Review of The Promised Neverland 2nd Season

Here’s my 1st season review.

Let’s see how our escaped orphans faired out as they step away from the comforts of their home.

HISTORY: The story of The Promised Neverland goes like this. There once were 39 orphans at the Grace Field House. The orphanage was run by a woman named Isabella, but she’s known to the children as “Mama”. These children were given a happy home with plenty to eat. But when they reach a certain peak or the age of 12, they are “adopted” and leave the orphanage. What these children don’t realize that is they are NOT adopted. They are taken off the property where big scary monsters stick a sharp flower in their hearts and save them for feast later on.

Orphans, Norman, Ray, and Emma learned of this and are willing to find any way to escape their doomed fate. They learn who can and cannot be trusted, what to use for escape purposes, and teach some of the other children what to do in worst case scenarios. This, leading up to a fiery escape from the orphanage and the kids heading off to a better tomorrow!

SECOND SEASON: As it turns out, outside of the Grace Field House and the other orphanages tied to this monster syndicate are deep, dark forests filled to the brim with otherworldly creatures. Emma, Ray, and the other escaped children learned that there are going to be monsters everywhere. Either the highly intelligent ones that harvest the children or the generic, yet giant monsters you might see in any other anime. Add to the nightmare, the monsters from the orphanage syndicate are out looking for the escaped children and are ready to hunt them down. Especially Ray and Emma due to their high intelligence!

But the kids make it out of that trouble and meet two demons named Sonju and Mujika who are much different than the ones pursuing Emma and Ray. These two demons make it their mission to not eat any humans for religious reasons and to help these kids reach their next point on their journey. The next stop is to hopefully gain access to the human side of the world. Due to a 1000 year-long agreement between demons and humans, both sides are divided. The kids will continue to follow clues left behind by a man named William Minerva (an author behind many books the kids read).

And with a little help from a pen their dear friend Norman left behind, their hopes are riding high.

LICENSING: This was actually a pretty big cash-cow for Aniplex back in 2019 and so they snatched it up as soon as the series was green-lit. Problem is that FUNimation got its greasy mits on this series too. So Crunchyroll doesn’t get shit from this deal. Yeah, this is not the only series Crunchyroll got butt-fucked on despite streaming the first season. Not only Hulu and FUNimation got ahold of this series, but they got the old cast back to dub as it is also airing on Adult Swim’s Toonami. Of course, all of this was decided long-before we all learned this season was going to be a flaming disappointment.

NEW CHARACTERS: As I mentioned in my synopsis of season two, Emma and Ray meet two demon monsters when they were trying to navigate the forest. Mujika and Sonju are demons much like the monsters that kill and eat the orphan children. The only difference is that these two do not eat children. They both refuse to eat them on a count of religious standings. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.

JAPANESE CAST: *Mujika is played by Atsumi Tanezaki (known for Futaba on Bunny Girl Senpai, Uo on Fruits Basket 2019, Houzuki on Kono Oto Tomare, Juno on Beastars, and Emilia on Durarara)

*Sonju is played by Shinichirou Kamio

ENGLISH CAST: *Mujika is played by Lizzie Freeman (known for Chizuru on Rent-A-Girlfriend, Ryuuzu on Re:Zero, Cardinal on SAO: Alicization, Trish on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Pt. 5, and Chitose on Tonikawa)

*Sonju is played by Daman Mills (known for Yakov on Yuri on Ice, Abel on Attack on Titan, Mabu on Sarazanmai, Chika on Kono Oto Tomare, and Kai on Beastars)

SKIPPING ARCS: Soooo…this never happens in any of my reviews. There are only a few mangas where I’m actually ahead of the anime so this is a new experience for me. I can actually get on board the “I read the manga train”. And I would lodge a complaint!

Guys, what the hell are you doing cutting out Yuugo from the anime? Not just that, but the whole Goldy Pond arc! You take the time to have the kids make it to the shelter and have a scene where some of the kids come upon those names on the wall. What kind of sick-ass shit is that? And then you immediately jump ahead to the shelter being raided. Because of this, folks skip over very important details including Emma crossing over… *censored*

And meeting… *censored*

*censored* and the connection between *censor the fuck out of this*

And that wasn’t even William Minerva!

Right, this is a review for the anime, not the manga. Now I know how those hardcore manga-reading jerks feel like. Guys, if you want to please check out The Promised Neverland’s manga chapters 50-119. In fact, just stop the anime around episode 4 and pick up the manga from there. It’s only going to get worse from here on out. Be afraid children, be very afraid!

ENDING: Much to my dismay, it looks as though the Yuugo/Goldy Pond arc was never meant to be in the anime version. I stupidly thought there would be a 1% chance of there being a side-story movie telling that story. Oh well! I guess this season, they wanted to focus more on Sonju and Mujika and the best way to do that is throw away 60 chapters of story to get to the next possible point we can see these characters. Yes, my irritation is showing!

As we saw in the halfway point, Norman comes back. Yes, he’s alive! And they found it absolutely necessary to make us wait an extra week to find out why he’s there and even longer to learn about his time after leaving Grace Field. And even with all of that, is it even worth talking about? Not to mention the way they met Norman again was completely different from the manga. You’re totally bypassing the information about *censored*.

Norman’s got some new mates he met while locked up in the Lambda facility. Because of Norman’s intelligence, he was actually spared from death, unlike so many other orphans. He just became a test subject for the monsters. But Norman and other test subjects were able to rebel and escape. Next up is Norman’s ultimate plan of wiping out the demon race for good. He’s come up with a way to eradicate them all through degeneration. Now for kids who have been groomed to become food for demons, this does seem like a logical idea. Kill them all and let God sort it out. It’s just that, yes, Emma does have some sort of compassion after spending a good six months on the run. Not only that, but her time with Sonju and Mujika! Not all demons are evil.

But Norman’s time in the facility has changed him. Even making a promise with Emma and Ray wasn’t going to go down with agreed parties. Norman ends up committing the mass genocide of the demons before Emma and Ray come back with Mujika and Sonju. Thankfully, the meek crybaby Norman emerged when he realized what he was doing was bad. Mujika and Sonju were able to reverse the demons being deformed. Even Norman’s comrades were feeling remorseful about taking innocent lives when they meant no harm to them whatsoever. So that’s taken care of! Now, for a few problems that have risen to cause mayhem!

Norman and his comrades were experimented on to a point of illness. So all of those kids are pretty close to expiration unless they get some sort of cure hidden in more pen magic left by “Minerva”! Next, Phil and the others are going to be shipped out. So it’s now or never if they’re going to break out the rest of their friends. Then we have Isabella…she now has the title of “Grandmother”. And Ratri, the guy who “adopted” Norman and had him spend his days in the Lambda testing farm is watching and waiting for these escaped children to pop up. The kids were able to sneak onto the farms, fool Ratri’s guards and monsters, and sneak all the children from the farms to this one point where they can go to the human world.

They were then stopped by Isabella and all the other mothers from all the farms. But as it turns out, it was a double cross for Ratri. Isabella and the other mothers have their own reasons for this rebellion. I mean, we all remember Isabella’s memory and that beautifully haunting music that accompanied it last season. If her kids are able to find a way out of this system, she’ll take advantage of the situation and take down Ratri. On top of which, the demons in the nearby town are revolting against the system. I guess after Emma and the others saved them from the gas Norman and the other Lambda subjects released, they’re kinda indebted to her and the rest of the escapees. So Ratri is trapped in a corner with all the walls closing in. What does Emma want now? Join her in freedom.

So we get a condensed version of Ratri’s backstory. Yeah, he’s the younger brother of William Minerva. Minerva was supposed to be the head of the Ratri clan until he learned the truth about farmed children and that’s when he became…well, William Minerva. And so Ratri had his brother killed off. Ratri laughs at Emma and slits his throat. The kids make it to the gateway between the demon world and human world. Emma says goodbye to everyone as she explains she will not join them until she makes the true promise come true. She will become the new William Minerva and save other children from being cattle to a bunch of demons. And because of Mujika and Sonju, they feel they have the ability to do so.

What follows is a slide-show of all the children in the human world living their lives happily in freedom and Emma traveling the demon world. Now I’m going to be honest here, I have not made it this far in the manga and had no idea that there was a lot more story between the gateway and the very end. MUCH MORE! So…this was a very cheap ending. Especially when you’ve got a lot of story involving Emma and even her memories! Well then, Emma returns years later as the kids gather for some sort of reunion. And that’s the end!

God, this season was a rushed cluster-fuck. Before I go into that, I think it’s worth noting that while The Promised Neverland manga was very popular, the ending left many people unsatisfied. So the creator actually worked on the second season of the anime to possibly fix that mess. What we got was…a rushed cluster-fuck.

I’m so confused as to how much time has passed between the time of leaving Grace Field and the kids roaming around disguised as demons. In the manga, a good year and a half has passed. But the story had the kids meeting Yuugo, Emma’s time at Goldy Pond, Emma’s month-long recovery after being extremely injured, and the months of traveling to find the night and day destination. I feel like in the anime that it was six months. And if it was, why do a time-skip? It’d be nice to get a nice transition from one hiding area to another.

Then you have Peter Ratri “the villain”! He was absolutely useless here. Granted, we do get a few antagonists throughout the manga including Peter and the Ratri clan, but putting him as the main villain here just fell on deaf ears. We didn’t really see him do much of anything other than adopting Norman and holding a gun to all the escapees in the finale.

And that final episode! Talk about a rushed order of rotten hamburger meat. Now, I have not gotten that far in the manga, but I do know what’s supposed to happen. I can let go of Isabella’s sacrifice as we didn’t meet all of the demons from Goldy Pond. But, there are several arcs that they sloppily put in a slideshow of what happens after the kids make it to their freedom and it mostly involves Emma. Emma was supposed to give up something in an equivalent exchange sort of thing. But that never happened! I’m angry. I’m angry that I have to tell my ex and even one of my bosses at work that this season isn’t worth it. I’m angry that I even put this anime in my Top 20 list of best animes of the 2010’s. I was a premature asshole for that. I unofficially yank that series off the list and am replacing it with Demon Slayer. Congratulations Demon Slayer, you are truly one of the best.

And this hurts because the first season to The Promised Neverland was spectacular. From episode one, it drags you in the second you saw Connie’s lifeless corpse. And from then on you’re enticed by these kids doing extraordinary things in the hopes of escaping their fate of becoming food for demons. This anime was good enough for people to overlook things like facial features being too small for kid’s heads or everything about Sister Krone. But this season was just the second worse thing to come from the winter 2021 anime season. This sequel got lucky because we were somehow blessed and cursed with having the worst anime television series airing at the exact same time.

Recommendation wise, my immediate reaction is read the manga, eat your toenails, and scratch your taint with a cheese grater before watching this. But that would be wrong! Seriously, don’t do that. Since I’m on the other side of the manga reading line for a change, I would say if you’re a manga reader avoid this shit like the plague. If you’re an anime only watcher, enter at your own risk and see how it stacks up to you.

You had spent your time focusing on your energy projectiles and incorporating your psionic energy to hand-to-hand combat skills to enhance them. You and Kacchan had gotten closer spending time together in your dorms or you spent time training as he helped you get your quirk in control, and he also wanted to have someone to fight with who had equal power.

“The students are progressing nicely.” All Might said to Mr. Aizawa as they looked over at each student. Mr. Aizawa focused on you as you used your quirk to destroy a huge slab of stone.

“AP Shot!” Bakugo named one of his moves which allowed him to create an explosion beam. The beam created a hole in the stone. What you did see was it beginning to crack before a chuck fell heading towards All Might. Suddenly Izuku appeared and destroyed the rock with a kick before destroying the remaining with another kick.

“Are you ok All Might?” Izuku asked. You used your quirk to propel yourself up to the platform Bakugo was on.

“That was a close one.” You sighed walking over to him.

“Tch.. He has to be more careful.” He scoffed looking away.

“Sorry for that Young Bakugo.” All Might called out to him

“Be more careful old man!” Bakugo yelled explosions coming out his hands. You smiled at his outburst

“That move you did was really cool.” You complimented the blonde, his anger cooled down giving you a brief nod.

“It took some time but I think I got it down. Your quirk is getting better.” He pointed out you smiled

“Yeah I am able to use my quirk to float much better than last time, ” You giggle remembering we you began training with Bakugo and you were barely able to get a foot of the ground, “I wouldn’t be able to get better if it weren’t for you.”

His face turned red and he looked away from you “Yeah whatever.” Class 1-B and Vlad King showed up and they talked with Mr. Aizawa while one kid Netio Monoma, a kid you had seen around the school was talking with Izuku, Kaminari, and Kirishima. After your training had finished you and the girls were relaxing in the common area.

“That training was intense.” Ashido groaned laying on one of the couches draping her hand across her forehead.

“Has anyone made any special moves yet?” Hagakure asked

“I have special moves in mind but they did more training.” Tsuyu said.

Momo nodded “As do I with more training I’ll be able to get it down.”

“Same I almost got one move down. What about you Uraraka?” You looked at your friend who seemed to be in a daze and upset. Tsuyu nudged her snapping her back in reality

“Uh yeah I have a long way to go, but my heart is all jumbled up.”

“Maybe it’s because you're in love.” Ashido teased much to Uraraka’s shock

“No I'm not.” she denied her face turning red.

“Oh it’s probably Izuku or Tenya.” Ashido pries. Uraraka begins to float in embarrassment.

“Okay let’s leave the poor girl alone.” You try to calm the situation, which Momo and Tsuyu agreed.

“Don’t act all innocent Y/n. I saw Bakugo leaving your room really late one night. Wanna talk about that.”

Your face turns red, “That was nothing, he was just checking to see if I was okay, that’s it.” you defended yourself

“You have been spending an awful lot of time with him, with training and school.” Momo pointed out and the rest of the girls giggled.

“Momo what happened to not prying into people’s love life.”

“Oh so Bakugo is part of your love life.” Hagakure smiled and the girls laughed at your mistake.

“Aww look you're all red.” Ashido poked at your cheek and you smacked her hand away.

“And now I’m going to bed.” You stood up ignoring the whines from the girls and your departure. You got in the elevator watching the light ding each time you went up a floor. The elevator stops at the 3rd floor and opens and Bakugo is waiting there. “Hey Kacchan” you smile as he walks in.

“Hey, how are you.” He greeted standing next to you.

“Good, Are you ready for the exam?” You turned to look at him leaning against the wall.

He shrugged looking forward “Tch, Just another step closer to becoming a Pro.” The elevator dinged the door opens and you both stepped out.

“I see you tomorrow then.” You gave him a smile one growing on his face as well.

“Yeah, goodnight Y/n.” He pressed a kiss to your cheek quickly, his face turning bright red after that. He rushed off and you could hear him mumbling stuff which made you laugh

“Night Kacchan.”

You made your way to your room getting yourself ready for bed and letting sleep take over you.

The remaining days of your training had come and went, and it was the day of the exam. You got off the bus at the exam site holding your hero case. “Uhh I’m so nervous now that we’re here.” Hagakure frowned looking around at the other school showing up. Some of your other classmates agreed with her sharing their grievances.

“Just do your best and you will be able to go further to your goals of becoming heroes.” Mr. Aizawa said, standing in front of your class.

Kaminari looks at you all “Yeah he’s right if we are going to be heroes we need to go PLUS-”

“ULTRA!” Before Kaminari could finish, some random guy jumped into your huddle yelling out your phrase. You gave a look over to Bakugo as you watched the guy's reaction. “I’ve always wanted to say!” The boy bellowed making you guys wince at his enthusiasm.

“Yoarashi, it’s rude to interrupt other people’s huddle.” Another student who was literally covered in hair walked up to him with what you assumed was his other classmates.

“I’M VERY SORRY!” The boy vigorously bowed slamming his head into the ground, standing back up his head was bleeding much to you and your classmates' shock.

“There is a high school in the Kansai that is par with U.A,” Bakugo comments, “There from Shiketsu High.”

“I’M VERY EXCITED TO BE COMPETING WITH U.A AND I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST OF LUCK.” He exclaims before walking off with his fellow classmates. You watched as they walked away and other schools parted away from them as they walked in the exam building.

“Jeez What’s up with him.” Kirishima said.

“That energetic student is Inasa Yoarashi and a powerful contender. He was at the U.A. entrance exam the same year as you all and received top score. However, despite that score he declined the offer and went to Shiketsu.” Mr. Aizawa explain to you all who that student was.

“Why would he refuse enrollment in U.A. even though he admires the school.” Sero questioned

“Although Yoarashi can be awkward, his strength is great, be careful and keep an eye on him.” Mr. Aizawa warns everyone.

“Eraser!” A woman yelled and Mr. Aizawa winced “I know that scowl anywhere.” You all turn to see a very colorful woman approach you guys, “I saw you on tv at the sports festival, but it’s been awhile since we’ve been this close in person.” 

She waved at him as she got closer, “Who is she?” You looked over at Bakugo who shrugged in return.

“Oh that’s Ms. Joke the Smile Hero her quirk is Outburst. She forces people around her to laugh which affects their ability to think and keeps them from being able to move,” Izuku rambled on about the Pro in front of you all “Her fights against villains are always full of insanity.

“It seems like you two were close.” Asui points out

“Our agencies were near each other, as young heroes striving to make a difference in the world a mutual love bloomed.” She sighed reminiscing the memories

“No it didn’t”

“I do miss your quick retorts!” She laughs “Let’s get married.”

“No.” Her bold retorts make you smile at how quickly Mr. Aizawa deflects her attempts

“Good one” Ms. Joke bursts into laughter

“You’re hard to talk to, as usual Joke.” Mr. Aizawa sighs

“Come on imagine it if I was your wife you’ve have a future full of constant laughter!” She pointing to Mr. Aizawa

“That sounds like an actual nightmare” She laughed before turning to your class

“I‘m a teacher at Ketsubutsu Academy High School for Class 2-2.” She points overs to some students getting off one of the buses walking over to your class. 

“Wow Class 1-A I saw you guys during the sports festival. I’m Yo Shindo. I’m impressed with your class’ perseverance considering everything you went through this year.” One student greeted the group, grabbing Izuku's hand and shaking it. “You’re Izuku Midoriya I saw you during the sports festival,” Izuku's face turned red at the comment that someone saw him on tv, “You’re Y/n Midoriya you were there for the Kamino incident must have been scary.” 

He grabbed your hand as well as you stumped over your words. “Well..I mean...It happened.”

He turned to Bakugo who was next to you. “Katsuki Bakugo 1st place winner. I can’t wait to fight you.”

“Yeah, whatever, you can drop the act.” Bakugo scoffed, insulting him.

“Hey Bakugo, sorry about him.” Kirishima apologized on his behalf and Shindo shrugged, not bothered. After that little incident you all went off to get changed into your hero costumes. You head out of the locker room and head to the main stadium where everyone else was. You saw some of your classmates amongst the crowd. Once everyone was in the room a man who looked on the verge of collapse walked up to the microphone.

“Hello I am Yokumiru Mera from the Hero Public Safety Commission. You all are here to take your Provisional Hero License Exam out of the 1540 examinees only 100 of you will actually participate in the actual exam.” You all look around in frustration your chances of passing decreasing even further. “You all will need to complete the first exam to determine the 100 examinees that will compete in the Provisional Hero License Exam,” He yawn trying to stay awake, “The first part of the exam will test your speed which is required in Heroics. In the preliminary round; every examinee will take three targets and place them somewhere on their bodies where others can see, you cannot place them on your feet and armpits.”

The screen behind him shows a diagram of the targets. “Each examinee will be given six balls to use to hit the targets; the targets will light up when it is hit by a ball and once the third target is lit up, that examinee is considered as lost and disqualified. Whoever lights up the third target will be considered as the person who took down the other person. The goal of the preliminary round is to take down two examinees using the six balls given and whoever takes down two people will pass and qualify for the Provisional Hero License Exam.” Mr. Mera continues on his words getting more sluggish as he appears to fall asleep at the podium. He jolts rubbing his eyes looking over the students of different years, “You all will be given the targets and balls a minute after the preliminary round has begun.” He finished up walking off the stage as more people came out handing you all the targets and balls.

You had put one of the targets on your thigh, one on your stomach, and the last one right above your chest. Everyone had finished placing the targets and you all waited to be led to the arena to take the exam.

“Now that everyone has finished we can begin the exam.” Mr. Mera states and the room around you opens up and you are inside the arena with different terrains. An alarm went off and immediately different schools rushed off to different areas creating distance, and you saw Todoroki making his way away from the class.

“We should all stick together as other schools might be after us.” Izuku calls out to your classmate.

“I’m not going to hold back using my quirk more effectively and not become an easy target huddle together.” Todoroki comments running off in a different direction. Kacchan and Kirishima begin to separate as well with you following them.

“Sorry Izuku, I don’t want anyone in the crossfire of me using my quirk, good luck though.” You send a wave running up to catch up with the boys with Denki following after you.

“Why are you damn extras following me?” Bakugo growls heading off to the city-like district.

“Cause we can Bakubro.” Kirishima smiles following the grumbling blonde. 

“Someone’s gotta look after you and make sure you pass.” You commented walking next to him.

“I DON’T NEED A BABYSITTER!” He yelled sparks coming from his hands. You laugh as your group makes you way into the city. It had been a while since the exam had begun and already 58 people had passed, early in you all felt a huge earthquake but focused on the task on hand.

“Want some gum?” Ms. Joke offers Aizawa a piece.

“It’s the kind that traps your finger, right? No thanks.” he counters trying to look at the chaos happening in the arena. “It’s frustrating not being able to see who failed and who passed, though.”

“Our Shindo made it even harder to see by splitting open the ground, too.” Ms. Joke points out putting a piece of gum in her mouth. Every so often you would see smoke or some form of movement but not very clearly, “Hm? What! Are you worried?” Ms. Joke turns to the stoic teacher.

“There’s something I realized after watching Class 1-A for a while, they might not realize it, but in Class 1-A there are two people whose presence has a big effect. They’re not leaders, or the most popular, and the two of them don’t get along at all. But, before I knew it, their passion spread to the rest of the class. It’s strange, but one of them is always at the center of any major events. Joke, I’m not worried. I can’t wait to see what they’ll do. Even if they’re not physically with everyone, their presence raises the standard for the whole class.”

“You’ve fallen for them hard, hm? Gross.” Joke blows a bubble with her gum. 

“That is my class.. Class 1-A.”

Once Upon A Time Rewatch: 5x12 Souls of the Departed

Currently reading (well, listening) to The School for Good and Evil Series. It’s so good! It’s basically Wicked the Musical and has a fairy tale element like OUAT. Can’t recommend enough!

I had the weirdest dream last night that Ouat’s Gothel was hiding behind my bed at my old house trying to scare me. She stayed up all night with some blankets, waiting to pounce. Also, she was naked. Jesus Christ, wtf is wrong with my dreams?! I do not see Gothel in that way at all!! I was so freaking disturbed! @fairytalepsuedonym​ this is all your fault for putting that dirty hippie witch bitch on my mind lol xD! /jk

Also guys, we’re getting Disney+ today. I’m so excited! Let me know if anyone has any recommendations.

And you know what I just thought of? It looked like they were implying that Merida and Lord Macintosh were gonna be a thing (possibly? I think it’s up for interpretation) but he outright shot an arrow at one of her brothers and wanted the others dead too. Merida would never! Her brothers mean too much to her to forgive such a thing. Also, she gives me gay vibes. I don’t make the rules. Alistair makes all the rules.

Oh yeah! This is the 100th episode! The compilation for 100 episodes was so freaking epic!

Neal! Is that really him though?

She’s staring at his lips lol!

Omg! Emma would have come back for Neal if she could. That means she believes they were true love, and she could have split her heart with him, right?

So, he appeared to her? 

Omg! The way Emma is stroking his face and is staring at him, you’d never know she was working on saving her boyfriend lol.

You know what would have been so much better? If the underworld was perpetually dark and foggy (within reason) like the sims 4 Forgotten Hollow. That would have looked so much cooler!

Here comes the red filter. As a gifmaker and even as a viewer I wanna scream every time I see it but at least it’s not the Dark Swan arc.

I said it before and I’ll say it again: they should have let Regina’s and maybe even Rumple’s victims confront them! That would have been interesting to watch play out. I know we got Regina’s dad and Peter Pan but give me a family of Regina’s slaughtered villagers. What would their reaction be to seeing her?

Eww. I hate the way she dips her finger in that pie.

Guys. It doesn’t matter that you have Regina surrounded, she has pyrokinesis and telekinesis! Y’all are screwed! She blew the flames out? She had the advantage! I’m glad she didn’t hurt them of course, but as someone writing a book that consists of characters with magic abilities, you’ve gotta know when a powerful character has the advantage and when to use it. Where was Snow dodging a fireball as one of her arrows flies at Regina and it pauses in mid air only to sore back at Snowing and their friends, but they manage to outsmart her somehow? 

Woah. This is the boldest Henry Sr. has ever been. He’s really trying to help Regina out here. 

Cora!! My love!! I missed you!!

I love the Blind Witch. Does she have a name? I enjoyed her in ‘Regina Rising.’ I remember she’s quite a bit older than Regina

The Blind Witch: “What can I get you? Do you like gingerbread or children?” Omg Snow’s like “what the actual f**k??”

James, why are you like this?? Get off her, dude.

Those key rings are cool.

Why the hell didn’t Emma just tell Henry she saw his dad? I can think of absolutely no reason why she would keep that from him.

Lately all Robin has done is make random comments pointing out the obvious. “It’s uncanny. It’s so similar yet so off.” Yes, Robin we established that 9 minutes ago. His next line will be, “Goodness, is that a tree over there?” or “Regina, you were the Evil Queen”, mark my words. Where has his personality gone? I was never a big fan but at least he was kinda arrogant and cheeky before, at least in season 2 and 3. Now he’s just a dude that points on the ground and tells you there’s a stone. And they have the chemistry of a banana and a cheese cracker.

“Her puny army of sweaty little child beasts.”

Are those black roses? 

I may be wrong but wasn’t Cora trying to get Regina to stop hunting Snow White and find true love instead in 4x20 or am I making things up? And I wonder if this is before or after she appeared in 4x20. 

I just love Cora so much.

Is that how she got to the EF in 4x20? Through a looking glass?

The fact that she could so easily cross realms suggests that she willingly gave Regina her space. Which is something! But it feels like she’d have ulterior motives for that. Also Jefferson and Rumple would be screaming if they knew it was that easy to cross realms.

Regina: “are you threatening me?” Cora: “No. Of course not, never.” But you literally are though.

Peter Pan! He was under-utilised this season. Come on! They could have done so much with him! I’m glad at least Cora and Cruella got decent screen time.

Imagine watching OUAT for the first time with this episode and you see this full-grown man refer to a teenage boy as is father. I would be so confused lol.

I wonder if Rumple / Rumple’s father hail from Dunbroch originally. You know, with the Scottish accent. I’m kinda thinking about headcanoning that now. At least, I think Malcolm had a Scottish accent?

That got me! I forgot Cora had glamoured into Henry Sr.! I thought Cora had shapeshifted into Snow to trick Henry.

Oh, so Henry Sr. contacting her was the reason Cora could walk through the looking glass. If only someone had contacted Jefferson. And I’ve just remembered that in 4x20, she said a white rabbit brought her to the EF.

Killian looks creepy as hell here!

Lol Cora, you let Henry wrap the heart? What did you expect to happen!

Why did Regina need Snow’s heart to kill her? She could have easily killed her without even touching her. 

What the hell does Snow think is in there? She looks terrified.

Archie, wtf were you doing between Snow’s titties?! And what were you doing with a match? Gonna set some titties on fire xD? I bet she could never look at him the same again. 

He doesn’t want Regina to kill Snow because he thinks it will make her dark forever? What about all the other people she’s killed?! That makes no sense!

Okay, given that Grace didn’t seem to physically age much between the flashbacks in 1x17 and the present day in 1x17, this probably happened after the flashback’s events in 4x20. 

According to wiki, Regina’s birthday is February 1st. I’m only learning this now.

I’ve never seen Henry Sr. so bold and Adam end to help Regina.

Okay, so Regina shrunk Henry with her magic but she needed a mushroom to return him to his normal size?

Don’t lock him in that box omg!!

Cora: “when are you gonna get it in that thick head...” she’s so casually abusive.

Random thought but why is Henry’s surname Mills? It just seems like it’d be Cora’s surname. Maybe he took hers on but that seems strange for a Prince to do.

Aww. Henry got to meet his 3rd Grandpa! He’s so happy she named him after him.

Is that Persephone?

Oh my God! I’m so excited for the Cora and Zelena stuff!! By far my favourite thing of the season! To hear Cora say Zelena’s name- the fact she knows her name- I’d waited for so long for this! It left open so many questions!

And Hades infuriated with Cora on the love of his life Zelena’s behalf!! He loved her so much and would do anything for her. I don’t ship it as much as I initially did because of how it ended but that man freaking loved and cherished Zelena. He wanted everything for her. She desperately needed that and it was an emotional experience to see her get it.

That’s like her worst nightmare, being a peasant again. 

I can’t with the flame hair.

I forgot this episode was pretty good. I didn’t remember liking it but Cora saved it for me. I forgot she was in it because I have probably watch season 5 the least as I try to avoid it lol.

Thoughts on Winter

Winter shouldn’t end up with Moon or Qibli in the books

I’ll begin this with talking about Winter and Moon’s relationship.

The two’s relationship is undoubtedly one of the most interesting in the beginning of this arc. However, the crush he had on Moon came waaaaaay too quickly. I would have rather it slowly ramped up to the end of the book him solidly having a crush. Or at least, what he believes is a crush on Moon.

To jump a little farther ahead to what we see of the relations in the Ice Kingdom, everything is very impersonal. Winter is the odd man out with how deep his love for Hailstorm is and his family despite them being cold to him in one way or another. Whatever you may say, Hailstorm was prepared to kill Winter purely so he could have a rank in the 1st Circle. You may argue this is to protect their parents from falling down a circle and you would probably be right. Hailstorm would be the parents only hope to even keep their position among the royals. But is a life really worth it?

What we see inside the Diamond Caverns certainly seems to confirm it, despite their not seeming to be any outward consequences other than petty social gossip. This draws me to the conclusion that bonds of any kind are mostly looked down upon in royal IceWing society. 

Comparing Winter to true IceWings [not Cirrus], it can be seen he’s quite emotionally sensitive. He falls into extremes quickly, grasping to the tiniest of things. He especially grasps to empathy and affection. When Moon helps him with his Scavenger Bandit, he sees the worst enemy of Nightwings understanding him more than any other Icewing has since Hailstorm. Winter is suddenly thrown into a confusing whirlwind of extreme emotions. The more he sees Moon as an actual dragon and not the thing of nightmares he fears her to be, the more he grows attached. He clings to her because she understands him. 

Winter believes he has a crush on her, he has never had anyone like her in his life before. Moon opened an entire new world for him and allowed him to escape the unforgiving circles of IceWing royal society. 

Then comes him actually really getting to know Moon other than surface level. Winter doesn’t like what he sees. Winter sees a complacent indecisive dragon who gives too much leeway. She isn’t firm enough to balance him out to make for a good relationship and she does not tell him off for doing rude/mean things to her. 

Now a lot of this could be written off of Moon being placed to the side and being left to remain stagnant. Which ultimately could be true. Unfortunately, it’s not what is in the pages. Moon is a pushover until it comes to the utmost breaking point and that does not sit well with Winter. After the Diamond Trials, Winter is a firm action-taker. He no longer wants to sit back wait and watch. He sees something wrong and goes to right it rather than dawdle. Moon likes to wait and see and I can see how Winter could construe it to put some blame onto Moon for the plague that hit the IceWings even if he knew it ultimately was Darkstalkers own choice. 

In the end, Winter and Moon are better off regrowing a platonic relationship or keeping to friendly acquaintances.

Onto Qibli and Winter’s relationship.

Qibli and Winter also have quite an interesting relationship and Qibli is definitely a positive force in Winter’s life. Unfortunately, it almost feels as if their family traumas are too similar in a way. Both in the beginning of the arc are struggling to prove their worth to their parents whether they realize it or not. 

Early in their lives they both ‘betrayed’ their family terribly, and later on they abandoned their families altogether. Neither seem to have recovered. 

I think if they were together it would wind up being that they remind each other of their trauma. While I think they can help each other and understand each other better than others could, they still have to see each other often knowing that information. They have to look at each other and see all their own traumas in each other. They would see their trauma in each other every time.

I don’t think it’s good to ignore trauma, but I also don’t think it’s good to see it all the time. 

I think once the two are older they would make a good pair. When they’re both adults and have experienced life a little more than they already have and establish themselves. 

Winter’s method of coping would be to take care of Sanctuary and welcome new dragons to the city as well as teach them about Scavengers. He would create jobs for other dragons to document and care for the Scavengers and create a new era of understanding them. Winter would be a caretaker essentially. While not the governor or ruler of anything in the city, he is certainly a trusted figure the Talons of Peace use as an adviser.

Qibli on the other hand, I believe he would be something of a diplomat and an outsource for cities like Sanctuary and Possibility. This way he would have semi-regular contact with Winter and perhaps as time goes on a more solid relationship would develop between the two.

December 2020 TBR and short Reading Introduction!

Hey everyone! I'm Amber and I love reading for pleasure. I love to write book reviews for fun and also run the Reading for Pleasure book club on Goodreads so if you are an adult 18 and over, be sure to check us out. I plan to get back to my ARC read for review requests from authors and Netgalley starting back in January. Just taking a short hiatus so I can complete my reading for pleasure challenge this year. My goal is 150 books and I'm only at 113 now.

Here's a Tentative December TBR of books I hope to get too starting December 1st. I'll post my book reviews here and on Goodreads of books I finish:

December 2020 TBR

1. Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake-This is the final book of the Anna Dressed in Blood YA Duoloy which is about a young boy named Case who is a ghost hunters who kills ghosts. I enjoyed the first installment so I look forward to finishing the series in December.

That's all I have planned for now but hope to finish more series and trilogies off my ebooks e-reader shelf of books I started reading a while ago. Definitely want to finish the Wolf Hall trilogy and the Young Samurai series by Chris Bradford which are ones I recently started but haven't finished yet.

At the end of the month I'll be posting my yearly wrap-up for my reading for pleasure challenge with the best reads of the year that I've read this year in 2020. Tldr A/N: I don’t do tags (sorry!), this is a ‘slice of life’ I write when the mood strikes so updates will come when they come, this is set shortly after the first “Avengers” movie and any canon that pops up will likely be different so keep an open mind, Reader (or OFC, depending on your preference) is female/bisexual/plus-sized because it’s important to parts of the story but otherwise remains undefined.

(Long) A/N: This is weird(ish), but I'm posting it, because I've been writing bits and pieces for this thing for over a year now and I keep chickening out of posting it. So I'm doing it! First off, a few general warnings: this (to me) still counts as reader-insert since I haven't ascribed a detailed physical look or name to the POV character but I do know some extra things about her. Those being: female, bisexual, plus-sized, asocial. That's it for actual set details and I mention them because they will come up in the story. Also, this is written in first-person past tense. I'm sorry if any of that bugs anybody (I know some people are very 1st person averse) but it's just the way I wanted to write it. I can't honestly say it's self-insert but I can (and should) say it's pretty self-indulgent.

Secondly: this is a 'slice of life' type thing that I write bits and bobs for on occasion. Since I've been adding to it for over a year I have kind of a meandering story and a lot of little pieces that add up to something I enjoy. I'm just trying to finish this first arc so I'll just say for the time being it is Reader(or OFC) & Steve friendship but it's eventually going to be Steve/Reader (or OFC) and we'll see how it goes from there. I aim to update every other week but, again, this is the one thing I have that is for pure relaxing so we shall see. I will not be tagging for this fic. Sorry! I’m way too forgetful and this doesn’t have a planned schedule, so there’s no way I can trust myself to be an actual Adult and do something that responsible.

Thirdly: This is after the first Avengers movie but I have already altered parts of CA:TWS to fit in with what I'm doing. I'll explain it as I go, just keep an open mind.

Stupidly: I have a thing for Oblivious!Reader. It never fails to amuse me to think of different ways for a character to go 'wait, *that* guy?!' Idk why, but sorry not sorry.

  I had a routine.

I actually had several, but one of my most sacred involved my lunch break. After half a day of staring at papers and screens, I took an hour to fortify myself for another half day of staring at papers and screens. By…staring at paper and screens. But this was by my choice, at least, and done in a nice, airy café, with a good drink (and sometimes snack) nearby.

I’d been coming to the same shop for almost two years, ever since I got my job just a block or so over, and I rarely missed visiting it on a weekday. Even a fucking alien invasion didn’t chase me off for long– people still had to eat and businesses still had to run. As soon as the infrastructure was back to (mostly) functioning, I was back to doing what I did in every way.

I had noticed when some of the other regulars stopped coming around (I really hoped they had just decided to go somewhere else and that they hadn’t gotten caught up in that nightmare) and I also started to notice some new regulars. One of them was a jerk and I only noticed her as much as it took to avoid her. There were a few people who just came in to get drinks and left right away. Then there was one guy who ended up causing a bit of a stir.

I really only noticed him the first time because he was attractive enough to literally turn heads. Even some of the guys I had assumed were straight took a peek and whispered to themselves. And he wasn’t unaware– his cheeks flushed and he ducked his head and I was pretty sure three people fell in love with him on the spot.

It was funny, but aside from noticing he was attractive and was very nice to the cashiers, I went back to ignoring him. I only had so long in a lunch break and I wasn’t the type to introduce myself to strangers, no matter how cute they were.

So, we simply existed in the same general space at the same general time for a couple of months. He became a regular and also found ways to disguise himself– hats and glasses, and jackets with the lapels turned up. It was funny to me because it seemed like such a movie star thing to do, but even funnier was that, when he remembered to do it, it worked. He drew eyes from strangers less and less the more he figured out how to hide himself, and the other regulars got used to him being around. Just from basic interactions I knew his name was Steve, he tipped well, he was always very polite to the people working, and he liked to sit down with a sketchbook and a cup of coffee. That was about all the ‘interaction’ we had and it was fine.

Until one day.

My headphones were in and I didn’t notice him standing nearby until he leaned closer. I yanked out one of the earbuds and straightened up to see what it was he wanted. He went from concerned to contrite in what could have been a new record. “Oh I’m sorry; I didn’t see–”

“It’s okay,” I said and pulled out the other one so I could give him my full attention. “What do you need?” I surreptitiously checked myself to make sure he wasn’t coming over to tell me about an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction.

“I was just wondering…” He extended an arm to the (very full, I just realized) shop. “There’s nowhere else to sit and your table is so large, could I sit here? I promise I’ll be quiet.”

“It’s not like I’d hear you anyway,” I said and he smiled. I quickly pulled my bag off the chair next to him and pushed it out.

“Thank you,” he said, I nodded, and we went back to our solitary activities.

After that, though, if he ever saw me in the shop he would give me a friendly nod or say hi if I didn’t have any headphones in. I responded in kind, but we otherwise left each other alone. Except that busy periods hit and, given that one interaction, I seemed to be his go-to. We left each other alone and he seemed just as fine with that as I felt about it. It was nice– technically could it count as socializing? It sort of felt like it, but it was my favorite kind of socializing: respecting each others’ boundaries.

AKA: Leaving each other the fuck alone.

It was great.

Except he eventually started to get a little more friendly; subtly, and slowly. Like the day he asked for my name.

“I just feel like I should know who I’m apologizing to every time I take over your space,” he said.

“You’re a big guy, but you’re not that big,” I said. But I told him my name. Then, weirdly, he just…went back to his sketchbook.

I stared at him for a second. “Sorry,” I said. “I don’t really do this ‘meeting people’ thing that often, but don’t you normally give your name when someone else gives you theirs?”

He blinked and stared at me. “You don’t–” He stopped himself. “I didn’t tell you?”

“No,” I said. “I’d remember if you told me. And I’d remember if you told me and I forgot, because I would never, ever bring up your name or anyone else’s name ever again.”

He laughed, and looked startled by it. I was a little startled too, but he recovered pretty quick. “How do I know you’re not just covering for the fact that you forgot?” he teased.

“I am excellent at remembering when I should know someone’s name and deftly avoiding any chance at using it,” I said.

He chuckled, but he did say, “It’s Steve. Steve Rogers.”

I wrote ‘Steve’ in the front cover of my notebook, and expected to forget all about it.

I didn’t. Steve was friendly in an unobtrusive way. His greetings were warm and genuine and he was honestly pleasant to be around. I knew nothing of him but his name, that he liked to draw, and that people liked to gawk at him.

“Looks like you’ve made a friend,” one of the employees commented as she cleaned a nearby table.

“Uh…I guess so?” I pulled out a headphone just in case and sure enough, she stood and faced me and looked me up and down.

“How is he?” she asked.

I flinched, because seriously, what the fuck? “Um, he’s just some guy I sometimes share a table with. I don’t– I’m not– I don’t ever see him outside of here.”

“Oh I know; I didn’t mean it like that,” she said and grimaced. “And I didn’t mean that like– I just mean…is he nice?”

“Yeah. I wouldn’t sit anywhere near him if he wasn’t,” I said. “I have no patience for douchebags.”

She smiled. “Nobody should,” she agreed. “Just, a guy like him…you sort of hope he’s nice, you know?”

“I…guess,” I said. I didn’t really know what to say to that. “I’m definitely not into him, if that’s what you were worried about?” She stared at me blankly so I tried to figure out a non-awkward way to say ‘fucking go for it.’ “He’s a nice guy and you seem nice, so don’t worry about me, just ask him. Even if he’s not into you he’s the sort of guy who wouldn’t be a dick about it.”

“Oh. Oh, no!” She laughed and waved. “I have a boyfriend, so I’m not– no, but, uh, thanks.”

“Oh.” Then why was she so– well, maybe she just liked seeing a pretty guy like that also be a good guy. God only knew the world needed more men who weren't jerks. I didn’t get to find out though, because she got called away by her co-worker and I went back to my notebook and my headphones. Why was everyone suddenly so social?

“What are you listening to?”

I shrugged. “Just my library on shuffle; nothing really cohesive.”

He chuckled and went back to doing what he did. Today it was fitting in stealing bites of his two strawberry croissants while he sketched.

It was a little strange for me, but I was getting used to Steve asking questions out of the blue. He was a nice guy and I didn’t want to be a jerk, that was part of it, but he also seemed to know when it was okay to talk to me and how far he could go. If I ever really didn’t want human interaction he somehow clued into it and would sit quietly. If I was open to it, he kept the conversations light and just something we both did in the background. Several weeks into this strange lunchtime camaraderie I accepted that some days he was there, some days he wasn’t, but it was just a nice easy thing we both slipped in and out of as time went on.

I was realizing I never really asked a lot of questions though. I cleared my throat. “Do you work around here?” I asked.

“No,” he said, smiling at his drawing as he worked on it. “I work…well, I’m sort of ‘on call’ I guess you could say,” he said. “My schedule is really irregular. I like to come here just to get out of my apartment from time to time.”

“That sounds nice,” I said.

“And you?” he asked.

“Yeah, I work in the area,” I said. “I like to get away from my desk and out of the office for at least a little bit. So I come here and just relax for an hour before I finish out the day.”

“That sounds healthy,” he commented. Before I could figure out if he was being sarcastic, he snapped his head up and waved his hand. “I didn’t mean– shit; I’m sorry,” he said and put his pen down. “That sounded bad. I meant it sincerely though. I have a lot of friends who are…workaholics, I guess you’d say.”

“Yeah, I do my fair share of overtime, but I definitely prefer not to,” I said. I thought about asking him what he did, but then he’d probably ask what I did, and I didn’t want to talk about it. It was fine– paid the bills and that was always a good thing, I just hated watching people feel like they had to feign interest in my bullshit. So we settled back into silence. And it was good.

“Um…excuse me?”

I looked up and so did Steve. The kid was looking right at him though, and I went back to looking at my book. I did keep an ear open, though, because I was nosy. Steve asked the kid’s name and I heard nothing, but when I glanced, Steve was scribbling something on a piece of paper.

His name.

I squinted, because he was signing an autograph, really?

Suddenly the woman’s comments, about hoping that ‘a guy like him’ was nice, made a lot more sense. Also the ‘movie star disguise’ thing. Was he actually a movie star? He hung out here way too much for that to be true, but I was baffled. Steve went back to his sketchbook like nothing was wrong or weird and I tried to figure out how to Google a tall blond buff guy named ‘Steve’ while somehow not getting stuck with a bunch of porn. Ugh; what was his last name again…

“You know you can just ask me.”

I looked up from my fruitless search. He smiled patiently, but he looked…tired.

Well then.

“Where’s the fun in that?” I asked, but I didn’t have all day. When I looked at my phone again, I realized I barely had five minutes. “We’ll see how many lunch breaks it takes me to figure it out.”

He let out a surprised little laugh, and then he smiled for real. “How many do you think it’ll take?”

“Hmm.” I tapped my chin. “If it takes more than three, I’ll buy your coffee.”

“If it takes less, I’ll buy yours,” he said, we shook on it, and I packed up to leave.

“By the way– this one doesn’t count,” I said and skipped out to his protests.

There were a lot of blond buff guys who did porn.

So I maybe got a little distracted.

“Jesus.”

I leaned my head back and shut off the screen at the same time. “You’re blond and your name is Steve; I don’t have a whole lot to go on. Also, he had most of his clothes on.”

“He wasn’t going to,” Steve chuckled and sat back in his seat. “Should I try a latte? I also heard mochas were good.”

“If you really wanted to take advantage you’d go for the frozen drinks.”

He made a face like a five-year-old. It was so ridiculous I had to laugh. “I’m not sure about cold coffee,” he said.

“Ah, not even iced coffee?” I waved my sadly-not-iced drink around and took a long sip. “You’re missing out.”

“I’ll just take your word for it.” He glanced at the menu, and then back at me. “Next time then?”

I stared him down. “This is only lunch break number one.”

“Two.”

“One.”

He was grinning and I stuck my tongue out at him. “I’m gonna add ‘stubborn brat’ to my search parameters,” I said. And I did. He laughed at me.

There was only so much internet searching I could do before I got a little bored.

“Do you want to just give up now?”

“Never,” I said and swiped at my game. “I just need a little downtime. This is my lunch break after all; I’d rather have fun and relax before getting back to work.” I cleared the stage and looked up at him. “I’ll figure it out next time.”

“You are so strange,” he said, somehow sounding like he was laughing without actually laughing.

“Hey.”

I didn’t get the full lunch break to try to figure it out one last time.

“Oh my god is that Captain America?”

I perked up and saw a flabbergasted gaggle of teenagers looking right at…Steve.

Steve.

Steve…

Steve Rogers.

Oh.

Holy shit.

He kept at his sketchbook, as he usually did, and I sat there and digested that information. The teenagers were too shy to approach (and as friendly as Steve was whenever people did come up to him, he never really encouraged that behavior) and so I got to sit quietly and take that in.

“Well?” he asked and looked up. At me. Like he was awaiting my judgment or something.

“Uhhh…” Whatever I thought I was going to say fled my brain and I was left with nothing. I scrambled for something. “Um…thank you for your service?” I said, eventually. He blinked and I let out a sigh. Why did I ever open my mouth nothing good ever happened. “Help me out, what do people normally say?”

He stared for a second longer and then he laughed. And laughed. And laughed. Once he settled down his eyes were bright with humor and it didn’t feel like he was being mean. It took me a little bit to realize he sounded relieved. And, like that, I felt a little more relaxed. Enough to go completely deadpan when I said, “Wow. So ungrateful.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” He grinned like a total jerk. “Thanks.”

Yep, total jerk.

No wonder we got along.

Alright, here’s my list of recommended fics you super awesome humans. 

As I said in my other post, writers helping writers is awesome so I’m so happy to tell you some of the fics I’ve read that I love. Go show these amazing people some love for the time and effort they have put in to create wonderful fics. Any fics I mention have been read by me (multiple times with some), and I totally recommend them. 

I’m gonna do this in a few ways, first off, I’ll section Archive of Our Own separately to FanFic.net, just to make it easier for me to grab the links. Ao3 has a nifty little thing where you can see your reading history so I can grab them from there, with FF, I need to go through and find them, pray for me lololol.

I’ll also be separating the Boondock Saints ones and Daryl ones, just for your ease, if you're only interested in one and not the other. The Daryl ones are only on Archive, because I haven't really read any over on FF for some reason, don't ask me why, I just haven't.

They’re not in any particular order, just as I see them, I'll grab them.

These aren’t all the fics I’ve read, some of the ones I love have been deleted by the writer, which breaks my heart honestly, and some of them I just can't remember.

Archive of Our Own [Boondock Saints]

- One of Three 

I really like this one and you guys should really check it out.

Author Summary; She had cocooned herself, letting routine and safety run her life. After everything she knew it wasn't much of one, and because she decided to do the right thing her life's about to hit a tailspin in some of the worst and most fantastic ways.

This is a Murphy/OC/Connor story and it’s amazing.

- Boondock Saints OC Arc

This ones a little different because it's not set out like the usual fic. Its an arc and some bits have one chapter, one of arcs even has 36. They all follow the same storyline and it flows like a normal fic, the author has just chosen to post it this way, and it works.

Author summary; The story of one girl's first up close and personal encounter with one of the brothers on a late-night subway.The 1st story in my Boondock Saints OC story arc.

This is a Murphy/OC/Connor fic, and it's one of my favs honestly, I've read it all numerous times.

Chapters; I can't give you an exact number with the way it's set out, but as I said, one arc alone has 36, so there's plenty to sink your teeth into.

- Everybody Knows

I love this one, it's short and sweet.

Author summary; Everybody knows exactly what Marissa needs to do to get over her recent breakup. She's spent the last month in mourning and her friends are ready for her to move on...

- Saints Alive

I looooove this one!

Author summary; Skid is once again on her own and she has to find a new place. Luckily for her, she knows a friend who knows a guy who knows of a place for free. Downside is it's in the South side of Boston where crime is rather terrible. Of course, with two Irish brothers as new next door neighbors, what's the worst that could happen?

I’m in love with this one, it’s really fucking good.

Author summary; Nolee moved to South Boston with a hope to escape her past and make a better life for herself. What she didn't plan on was the peculiar Murphy MacManus coming into picture and breaking down everything she thought she knew. As they attempt to bond, can she overcome her tainted old life and let down her walls? Especially with one extra problem: she's already pregnant.

Another one of my all time favs. I love the dynamics of the characters and how well the boys are written. There’s some serious humour thrown into the mix and I laughed out loud so many times when I read this one. You’ll also be pleased to know this author is on Tumblr, @risingphoenix761. If the username looks familiar, it's because I tag her in all of my shit and recently wrote her a BDS drabble for her birthday. She's an awesome human, so check her out :D

Author note; They were called to destroy evil, but crossing paths with a wayward soul meant compromise. And in compromising, the MacManus brothers get more than they bargained for. Connor/OC/Murphy (rated M for violence, language, and sexual content)

- A Saint, A Sinner

Now this one right here, I have probably read so many times I know it word for word, I’m not even kidding. This is very high on my list. The boys are written perfectly, I love every fucking thing about this one, and there's some very interesting hot and heavy shit along the way.  If you only read one fic of this list, it needs to be this one.

Author summary; Connor M./OC/Murphy M. BDS prequel/romance. What happens when you drink whisky with the boys? It's got it all: romance (as far as the boys can DO romance), fluff, hurt/comfort, plot, canon plus research. Rated for MacManus mouth, violence, & explicit three-way smut (no twincest). Note: The BDS belong solely to T. Duff

Chapters; Now it says 87, but the author has been reworking this fic so it's actually about 67 I think? I’m unsure, and the chapters are a little shorter than usual fics. It’s still amazing and a lot for you to immerse yourself in.

- Saints Angel

Another good one you need to check out.

Author summary; The Saints help to protect everyone in their city, but what if they had a protector of their own? In comes a woman, a hurt, young, lovely woman that was rescued by them, given a new life. To her, they are her boys and she will now do anything to protect them. She will become their Angel...forever to walk by their side...forever to watch over them.

This one is perfect quite honestly, I fucking love the OC so much and everything about this fic.

Author summary; [HIATUS - UNDER REVISIONS][ConnorxOCxMurphy] Avery, an emotionally independent journalist becomes complicated by her simultaneous feelings for both of the twins. As their secret life of vigilante world unfolds, Avery is left unattended to an entitled, delusional psychopath.

Rated M for language and some adult themes. Please Enjoy

This one is fucking amazing. It’s so different from any other BDS fic I’ve read and well worth the read. There's also a sequel which is Connor/OC, so if you wanna read that, click on their username after reading this one and give that one a read too.

Author summary; She is possessed by something evil and supernatural. They have been asked to help save her, to call upon their faith, but one of them is struggling to believe in anything anymore. If she can't be saved then they will be forced to kill her. Do they have the strength to do what they must? Can he believe in something again?

I love the humour in this one and just everything about it.

- His Walls

This one is so fucking good, it’s number two on my list of Daryl fics. I love how it starts off with young Daryl, they write him so well and exactly how I imagine him to be. It’s soooooo good guys, read it

Author summary; People build up walls, not to keep others out, but to see who cares enough to break them down. Truer words have never been spoken where Daryl Dixon was concerned. He never expected anyone to care enough, until someone did.

Starts out AU with 20 yr old Daryl, from Chapter 22 on out we'll be in the ZA-world.

M-rating for smut, language, adult topics, descriptions of abuse & attempted rape.

I hadn't actually read this one before, but I came across it when searching for ones I had read, and I fucking loved it. Young Daryl is my jam and this was so well written and just a good read. This one is a little different, this is a collection of works by the writer where they write not only about Daryl, but a lot of different characters Norman has played. As you can tell by the title, they’re all smut based, and well worth the read. It's also worth mentioning that the writer also has a tonne of other Daryl stories so make sure to head onto their profile to check everything else out, it would take too long to link them all here. Most of them are AU Daryl which I love and they're a really talented writer.

Okay I lied, this is the same author as above and the next one is too because it's a sequel to this, but they're my favs by this author, I love them. They're a little dark and they're AU, but if you're like me, you'll love them. I recently recommended the sequel to this one to someone in my ask box.

Until he meets his beautiful neighbor- then its possibility, hope, and maybe a bullet to the brain.

Author summary; -Abrasive. Yes, that description fit him perfectly. The guy smelled like trouble, and she knew he would get even more abrasive the longer she talked to him. Too bad she didn't care. -A pretty stranger that talked to him, knew his name and his place of work? In Daryl's book, that just couldn't be good news. AU - Daryl Dixon/OC, Explicit for language and sexual situations. Yes smut!

I know I keep saying I love the fics, but I do, clearly. This one though is another favourite of mine and you really need to read it. I love the dynamic between the OC and Daryl.

Author summary; Set between Seasons 2 and 3. Melissa Sheppard is alone in the ZA, but she was alone before the dead owned the earth. She prefers it that way. Boy, is she pissed when she gets back to her cabin to find it has been taken by strangers.

This is another I hadn't actually read until now when I was searching, I actually really loved it. It's full of smut and that's never a bad thing. It took me a couple of chapters to really get into it, but it's really worth the read.

Author summary; Daryl comes across Lucy (OC) in the woods and claims her for his own. The story begins during the Farmhouse era of the series.

Another one, just read it.

Author summary; After the Governor attacked the prison, the only person left in Daryl's shitstorm of a life was Judith. For Daryl, it's enough. Until he met her.

- Roommate

Holy shit, this fic is everything. It's AU pre-ZA and it's just the best. It's so good, I can't even put into words, very high on my list and it also has a sequel set in the ZA that’s 13 chapters long, please read it. If you like AU things, this is for you. The way they write Daryl in this, it's just gold. It’s also told in Daryl's POV which is just amazing.

Author summary; Several bodies are found in the area of a small town. In this town lives Daryl, the killer of all those people. The investigation goes on, the profile is made, and now the police and the FBI look for a specific type, a loner type, ... Daryl's type. He decides to find himself a roommate in an attempt to mislead the police. Let's see how that will turn out for him. AU pre-apocalypse horror story. Obviously very OOC Daryl.

Rated M for a good reason, violence, foul language, adult content... it's all there, consider yourself warned.

Okay, so this ones a little different. It's actually a Daryl/OC/Rick love triangle and I usually don't read Rick fics (loool that rhyme though) but this is a good fic.

Author summary; Thea Graham has lived in Alexandria for over a year and is happy being mostly invisible. This is what happens when she suddenly has the attention of two men.

- Running Wild

This story is number one on my list guys, this is right up there with His Walls. This is my number one fav Daryl fic of all time and I’ve read it so many fucking times it's unreal. This fic is life, it’s everything. If I could only read one fic over and over for the rest of my life, it would be this one.

Author summary; Four years have passed since their sanctuary at the prison fell at the hands of the Governor and the surviving members are now thriving at their new home just north of Atlanta. Out of the blue, late one afternoon, Daryl Dixon stumbles across someone they thought they'd lost long ago; a member of the Woodbury community that had returned with Rick to the prison.

Warning: This fic is quite a bit darker than my other ones. If you are looking for fluffy bunny, happy prancing unicorns and rainbow colored endings, this is not the story you are looking for.

I love this fucking story, ‘nough said.

Author summary; Her story isn't all that different from anyone else these days. The world went to shit, and the dead don't want to die. She's lost people. So has everyone else. Who she was before isn't who she is now. But there is one difference between Lena and every other survivor she's come across. She doesn't know who she was. And who she is? Well, she's still trying to figure that out.

During the mayhem of the early days of the apocalypse, a fateful smack on the head stole her memory. All she's ever known is the world she's living in now. But that doesn't mean she's adept at surviving it. Eventually, she ends up alone and near death's door. Till a man on a motorcycle chooses to save her life.

Now she has to decide if who she was is worth finding, or if she'll fight the hell that comes with what's forgotten and strive for something better with the one man in the world who can see past it all.

Yet another amazing fic!

Author summary; Daryl and Raven's world collide after a visit to Hilltop by the group from Alexandria. Raven's only love is her Black Stallion Obsidian and Daryl has been done with loving anything for a long time. He's had a lot of practice hardening his heart but the dark vixen is finding cracks in his armor. Will Raven be the one that will finally make Daryl feel again? Rated for sexual situations.

I fucking love this fic. This author has already made it on this list because she's so fucking good. Just go read all of her shit. Its AU Daryl, which by now you guys should probably be able to tell I love looool.

OH MY GOD THIS STORY GUYS. I love this one, really fucking love it. High on my list. It's got a little bit of Negan/OC in there, but who doesn't love a bit of Negan? I certainly fucking do lololol It’s mainly Daryl/OC though, so even if Negan isn't your jam, I would really recommend reading this.

Author summary; She fought and killed to survive but she lived for revenge. Valentine waits for the right moment to kill the man who murdered her family. Can she do what needs to be done to escape the Sanctuary that is her prison? Can she accept the helping hand from strangers to do it? Can she live with all she lost? TWD world, non canon timeline.

Can we just talk about vampire Daryl for a second, because like HOLY FUCK WHY IS THIS THE ONLY VAMP DARYL FIC I HAVE EVER FOUND. *Breathing intensifies*

Author summary; Having lost her entire group, Lena finds herself alone in a crumbling world watched through darkened eyes. She is courageous, savage and uncomplicated. Her only companions being an obedient horse and two pet Walkers. When she finds herself outside a prison, inside the walls she finds a group of survivors capable of giving her a glimmer of hope.

Author summary; Anamika has been alone from the start of the apocalypse and she likes it that way. Groups meant vulnerability, which meant death and Anamika wanted to survive. However, circumstances change and when she agrees to give Alexandria a chance, she finds that she just might not have met the right sort of people before, in particular a dirty, gruff redneck with a hidden heart of gold.

I thought I’d throw this one at you, why’s it a bonus fic you ask? Its a Negan fic, not Daryl, but what the fuck, have it anyway, its really fucking good loooool I fucking love Negan man, I’ve thought about writing him so many times :’)

Author summary; When Blake finds herself sold out to the Saviours by her abusive fiancé, she realises that she's certainly not on her own anymore and finds an unlikely friend in Negan. And Negan does NOT like men who beat their girlfriends, one tiny bit….

That nifty history thing on Ao3 I mentioned, for some reason, quite a few weren’t there and I had to go through the fics to find them. Not every single one is on the list, that would take me fucking forever to do, but these are the best ones I've read.

Lavi anon: whoa thanks so much for the epic long reply. I love everything about it! Some stuff definitely caused me to think new things (so much I won't remember everything). 1st thing, The way I've always interpreted Roads Nightmare was that she accessed Lavi's dreams and let Lavi become his worst enemy letting all his fears fight back. Road meanwhile played a passive role by hiding in Allen. Afterall she didn't control bookmanJr. That was Lavi warring against his own mind. BookmanJr stuck-

2 around even after Lavi had stabbed Road. BookmanJr in my opinion was the one controlling the dream (thanks to Road, in return she controlled the body) trying to punish the part of him going astray. But BookmanJr (like you said) accepted Lavi and him were the same person when BJr heard Allen’s calls and tried to sacrifice himself to save his friend. But that’s my interpretation of Lavi’s worst fears and how even BJr couldn’t distort how Lavi sees Allen (you know it never occured to me how -

3 messed up it must have been for Lavi to stab dream Allen. Road could have been bias, but you’re right in that she could have seen how unchanged Allen was compared to the other’s and assumed Lavi would have treated dream Allen differently).

Second, actually you’re right. I gave Road maybe a little too much credit on how much she manipulated the situation but considering the final manologue of how “Lavi” convinces “Bookman JR” you’re completely right: it was indeed more his internal self talking. 

I do think Road nudged a few things around. But it does lessen how much of her impact it was. And it says a lot about Lavi that this is how his fears manifests itself. How for everyone else in teh order it’s how much they’d judge him for him thinking of them like that, and all and so forth, but for Allen, what breaks him, is just how much of his emotional attachement to Allen was something his “duty self” had to reject and the fear of that one loss broke Lavi. 

But therefore if it’s really just Lavi’s fears coming out, Road probably only went into Allen because after seeing Lavi’s fears he knew she would be safer there. Like… if Road had all controle over the dreams and how she nudged it, she wouldn’t have just have let her Bias for Allen put her in a vulnerable situation. If we go with your interpretation (which the more i think about it, the more i think it’s accurate) it means Road saw the way Lavi wouldn’t even get to hurt Allen in those fears.  And you have also a point: considering how the nightmare evolved, i think perhaps the fears showed themselves by layers. And considering in the first layers, the first nightmares, Allen didn’t appear, Road probably put one and one together knowing that Allen would dig deeper into Lavi’s fears and consciousness. And now i’m sad.

It also says a lot about how much Lavi’s duty is challenged by Allen that it became the One “Ink” worth taking out. Worth killing by his duty self. Like in those fears it also acknowledge how this affection for Allen is the biggest risk against his duty. Guuuh it’s making me even sadder but that makes sense considering how it’s his grief about Allen that got called out by Bookman. (I think it’s a question of bad timing, but Bookman beat Lavi up with how he doesn’t need a heart over Allen’s loss, when Lenalee is crying for him - when Lenalee almost dies, there is no real time to lecture Lavi over his duty. Sure Lavi was still thinking about it,the whole thing was started in his mind, but Bookman didn’t act on it again due to the others stuff that kept happening. So even if this affection extended to Lenalee it was Allen who was the catalyst and therefore “the risk” in his nightmare. Funny enough considering Lenalee’s involvement in his nightmare were that her helplessness and how Lavi wanted to help her could be his downfall (but it wasn’t)- that echo how he was seeing the Lenalee’s situation on the boat. while Allen’s situation is fully on loss and it breaks him. Man. That hurts once put into that perspective.

Oh man Lavi’s right. No matter how much darkness ensnares Allen he’s such a creature of the light. Even kids see it better then adults. Timothy adores Allen. That girl Allen rescued in the Alma Arc thought his star was lucky. Another girl mistook Allen for-4 angel. It gets deeper when you realize a part of Lavi stopped emotionally/mentally aging when he became bookman jr and is the one who identifies Allen as dazzling Light. Even Kanda is getting in on being mesmerized by Allen’s white light image going by his expression from the last chap (Kanda’s 9 so…). I feel like Lavi’s observation was both a foreshadowing and resigned fear of losing Allen. Allen’s probably the best thing he’s ever recorded but he knows the natural state of the universe-5 is darkness with light only coming from sources. Humanity’s biggest light right now for Lavi is Allen. But even stars go out and Lavi probably wonders how long will Allen’s light shine for others until Allen himself goes out. I agree. Lavi is defintely overprotective at times. He freaked over Lenalee several times and during the Ark ark Allen was his main concern. Always staying close and getting jumpy when Noah attacked him. I’ll stop for now but I do love how Allen affected Lavi. X)

Nonny i love u and yes this is perfect. 

And tbh you have a point with especially resonating with children (although low blow for Kanda. Completely true and deserved and needed low blow but still). but it’s true that when “Lavi” gets to hear Allen’s voice and reason for a last time with his Bookman self against Road, his Bookman self turns back to a child. I think it meant a lot of having to face the values that had him start to be a Bookman to begin with. it’s apparently a decision Lavi took when he was 6 after all, before humanity made him numb to the “elder self” level. I think getting back to his Child self was a way to face back what were his original intentions by becoming a Bookman, trying to reconnect with that after years of losing yourself to cynism. But indeed it does create also an ongoing thing with younger people being carried away by Allen’s light in general and feeling hope in it.

But yes agreed, Lavi’s mention was really both foreshadowing and resigned fear of losing Allen. I think Lavi knows at this point, from almost losing Allen that it is something that will happen.

tbh even if we know Allen was “lost to his darkness” with Nea coming out, for Lavi, litterally, Allen “died” trying to save Suman after all. 

OKAY SO WAIT so as i was answering that i rewent to from chapter 55 to Allen’s death to notice what I wanted to say so: 

Timcanpy leaves VERY LATe the Tyki VS Allen showdown, and we know he recorded everything, so this is how much he saw. But here’s what happened:

Tyki killed Suman, making him explode from the butterflies. Allen was seriously injuried from the fight, right, and had to process all of that. Tyki eventually realizing who it was, started to show off his power: said Tease was only a weapon and he showed Allen how he could kill him, by tearing his heart out (so the whole scene of Tyki getting through Allen, litterally, and threatening to take his warm heart out, was reccorded by Timcanpy). THEN, Tyki destroys Allen’s innocence, STILL IN FRONT OF TIMCANPY (so that was reccorded). He also checks his hitman card to make sure and confirms that Allen is on his “to kill” list. But most importantly:The reason Tim left was that, while Tyki destroyed Allen’s innocence first, then headed to Suman’s, specifically talking about how he was looking to destroy the Heart. Allen knew at that point that he was on Tyki’s hit list. At this point, his innocence had already been destroyed, he saw Tyki’s destructive powers, and was too weak to try to fight back anyway.And what does Allen do? He asks Timcanpy to take Suman’s innocence and bring it back to the boat. Allen’s last action was to protect the innocence one last time. That’s what was recorded.

And also something I’ve never noticed until i looked for it but you know who is the first character we focus back on when Tyki is “killing” Allen? When Timcanpy leaves? Who is the first character from the boat we see again?

this is what serves as a transition from Timcanpy leaving Allen’s side to warn people on the boat, right before Allen gets killed. It’s Lavi who starts this “transition”. 

also this is right before they find Tim and I might need to scream at this reaction. Before being sure he died, he clentches his teeth remembering him and his kindness toward Suman before trying to believe that they will find them. He actually went througha  bit of denial there  g o d. I completely forgot. (also not helping the “memory effect” looks like it is fading away, a bit like light)

the point I wanted to make when i checked those out tho is that: Allen died “for the light” in a way. He died trying to protect, to save, and he spent his last minutes protecting the Innocence. In a way I can see why Lavi fears the Light swallowing allen more than the darkness: because to him, he saw Allen’s kindness taking him away. That Light that everyone sees in Allen, it had taken him away. 

Allen is a star, a light that is shining through and you’re entierely right: even those lights are doomed to fade away. And Lavi is aware of that, if only because it happened once. But he cannot hold hope for Allen even if he cares for this life. But ye at this point Allen is probably the best thing Lavi saw in his life and it hurts to think about how he might lose it at any moment like he already did.

And you’re right he does get overprotective, especially toward Lenalee and Allen. It still kills me that during the whole ark’s arc, while he remains mostly quiet, he spends most of his time stuck to Allen. It’s like,, dude,,, com’on,, you’re so scared to lose him again and you don’t even realize. He even felt for Allen when the Jasdebi were being vicious with him.

Man Lavi you care so much u fool. 

Everything about Lavi breaks my heart.

Author’s Note: This ended up being a bit longer than I thought it would be. Not complaining, mind. However, it also took longer to finish than I thought it would and that I will complain about.

“Mornin’ Riri…” Yoshiko yawned, shuffling into the kitchen.

“Mornin’ Yocchan…” Riko replied with the same amount of energy.

Yoshiko paused and Riko could almost feel her scrutinization.

“Nightmares ended up keeping you awake?” The younger girl questioned after a moment.

“Uhm… something like that…” The older girl replied, trying to keep the uncertainty out of her voice. Truth be told, she’d awakened three more times after Yoshiko left and before needing to get up.

But geez, was it that obvious? Sure, Riko wasn’t the most energetic person in the morning, at least not compared to the likes of Kanan who happily went for morning runs of several kilometers. Nonetheless, she was usually mostly functional before breakfast or the first dose of caffeine or whatever. Did she really look that tired?

“Want me to help?” Yoshiko offered, peeking at the breakfast being prepared.

“I’ll be done in a moment.” Riko replied, starting to roll the omelet. “Thanks for the offer, though.”

“Mmm…” Yoshiko moved to the table and took her usual seat. “Perhaps…” The gears turned sluggishly in her sleep-addled mind. “Maybe Yohane can conjure up a few nightmare wards to place around your room?”

“Nightmare what?” Riko brought two plates of food over and sat down.

“Wards. Kinda like dreamcatchers.”

“Dreamcatchers? I’ve seen those before. They’re kind of cute.”

“But instead of ensnaring bad dreams, they repel them entirely. Though to the dreamer, the effect is basically the same.”

“So… why not just use a dreamcatcher?”

“The magics available to a fallen angel are better suited to creating the wards.” Yoshiko explained as though it should be obvious.

“I see.” Riko nodded. “What do they look like?”

“Pretty similar to the glyphs, circles and symbols I use in my rituals since they all draw from the same sources for their power.”

“Hrm…”

“But don’t worry!” Yoshiko suddenly assured. “If Riri is worried about aesthetics, they would be in places that are out of sight.”

“Oh?” Riko wasn’t really that worried about such things; she had been more curious than anything. Also, she could always remove them when guests visited. But she thought it was nice that Yoshiko took such things into consideration.

“They are most effective when placed where the darkest of dreams often dwell. Places like the closet or under the bed.”

“U-under my bed?”

“They won’t have an adverse effect on your collection.” Yoshiko smirked. “Unless Riri wants them to…”

“Hmm…” Riko hummed before taking a bite of her omelet. She thought about the proposal as she chewed. “Alright.” She finally agreed.

“Alright?” The blue-haired girl across the table balked a bit as though not expecting the redhead to agree. “I… I mean of course it’s alright!” She recovered quickly, however. “Yohane is proud to help protect the precious dreams of her favorite little demon!”

Riko smiled. “Thank you, Yocchan.”

“Right here should work.” Yoshiko said, adhering the dream ward to the back of Riko’s closet door. “Did you find a good place for that one?” She turned to see her roommate laying prone with head and shoulders under the bed. “The closer you can get it to the where your head will be, the better.” She explained.

“I… think… I got it…” Riko’s voice was muffled from her position.

Yoshiko couldn’t help a slight chuckle as she watched the other girl shuffle back out. She would have preferred to be the one to place the ward, but at the same time, she knew how Riko continued to act as though her doujin collection was some sort of secret.

“Then that’s that.” Yoshiko nodded before yawning. “Off to bed for this fallen angel…”

“Sleep well, Yocchan.”

“You as well, Riri. I hope you have nothing but good dreams tonight.”

Riko smiled in reply.

Yoshiko sighed as she closed the door behind her and headed for her own room. Despite knowing that the dream wards were nothing more than paper with some symbols scrawled upon them, she honestly hoped that they might provide some piece of mind to her roommate. It was the least she could do, and she knew she had to do something.

While there was little doubt that Riko had nightmares in the past – who hasn’t? – Yoshiko believed this one to be different, not just because Riko had called out to her, but also by how much it seemed to have affected her. And if Riko’s morning lethargy hadn’t been proof enough of the effects, the fact that she hadn’t tried to grapple Yoshiko for commenting on the doujin had solidified Yoshiko’s resolve.

“Sleep well, Riri…” Yoshiko murmured to herself as she climbed into bed.

Riko’s eyes snapped open.

Another one.

Yocchan...

Similar sensations shifted.

The fact that Yoshiko wasn’t knocking on the door possibly meant she hadn’t called out this time. Or at least didn’t call loud enough for the other girl to hear.

Riko sighed and slipped out of bed so she could get a towel to wipe off the sweat. If this was going to become a regular thing, perhaps keeping one on her nightstand wouldn’t be that bad of an idea. With that thought in mind, she grabbed a second one and returned to bed.

So, the wards hadn’t worked. Of course, Riko hadn’t really expected them to work. Well, at least not in the way Yoshiko had described. First off, Riko suspected the dreams were not nightmares in the first place, thus making wards against them worthless from the start. However, she had also hoped that taking solace in her friend’s honest concern would be enough to calm her mind. Apparently not.

Once again, Riko did her best to ignore the demands for satiation and tried to fall back asleep.

“The wards didn’t work, huh?”

Riko jumped a little, not expecting her roommate to be awake already. She was actually on her way to the bathroom to get a better look at the dark spots under her eyes and try to conceal them. But Yoshiko had met her in the hallway and found out anyway.

“Seems that way…” Riko replied, trying not to yawn. Her dreams had awakened her four more times before her alarm went off and she had to drag herself out of bed. She also found herself unsure if she should give voice to her suspicions that the dreams were actually good, just of a… sensual nature.

“Hrm…” Yoshiko thought for a moment. “Perhaps Yohane should stand guard herself and personally fend off the nightmares…”

“Huh…?” Riko’s sleep-deprived mind found itself slow to process the idea. “You’re… going to… stand in my room all night?”

“No, silly Riri.” Yoshiko chuckled and shook her head. “I’ll move the guest futon to your bedroom and use that. Even while sleeping, the presence of one such as Yohane is sure to ward off any encroaching nightmares.”

“Not attract them?” Riko couldn’t help asking.

Yoshiko paused for a moment before answering. “Surely, they’d be more likely to try to torment a fallen angel than a mere mortal, right?”

“You might have a point there.” Riko allowed.

She then remembered the various sleepovers she had with her friends, and how, with rare exception, she had always slept well. Perhaps having familiar people around really could help, but not just in the next room over, rather pretty much within arm’s reach. It certainly couldn’t make things worse… could it?

“Alright.” She agreed after a moment.

Yoshiko smiled. “You go ahead and take the bathroom so you can get ready. I’ll go make breakfast.”

“You don’t…”

“Yohane insists.” The fallen angel made her signature gesture. “Helping my little demons when they are cursed with insomnia is a duty I am proud to perform.”

“Alright, alright.” Riko laughed lightly as she felt a smile tug at the corners of her mouth. “I’ll be out in a bit.”

A sleepover with Riri!

Yoshiko couldn’t help humming happily as she picked up the futon and moved it to Riko’s bedroom. She then went to her room to get her own blanket and pillow instead of the guest ones.

As she worked, memories of prior sleepovers ran through her mind. Aqours as a whole had spent many nights at various places together, but Yoshiko had always been most fond of the smaller groups; particularly when they included Riko. Her favorites though, by far, were the nights she had spent at Riko’s house to visit Prelude.

Tonight would be kind of like her favorites, though regrettably without the adorable pug. But as much as Yoshiko wanted to selfishly revel in the idea of sleeping in the same room as Riko again, she knew it wasn’t just about her. She wanted Riko to take some comfort in her being there and maybe get a good night’s rest.

“All set?” Riko asked from her bed as she reached for the lamp switch.

“Yohane is ready to descend into the darkest depths of the dreamworld.” Yoshiko replied, making one final adjustment to her pillow.

“Good night, Yocchan.”

“Sleep well, Riri.”

Riko awoke in an unfamiliar position. Her back was arched, her legs tensed and her hands gripped the sheet below her. It was almost as if she had been trying to push into something… or someone above her…

Her stomach felt cold and she realized she had not only shoved her blanket away but her pajama top had also ridden up. What the heck? A soft murmur from somewhere nearby caught her attention so she quickly tugged down the hem, sat up and glanced around the room. It didn’t take long for her gaze to settle on…

Yocchan…

Immediately, Riko felt something contort within her and she took a long, slow breath in an attempt to calm the rising sensations.

That’s right, Yoshiko had offered to be her personal dream warden for the night. Riko found herself wondering if the purported fallen angel had suffered her own bout of nightmares. Perhaps as a child? Perhaps even more recently? Maybe, that was why she was adamant about helping Riko; she knew the disruptions that were caused and didn't want her friend to go through the same things. That felt like something Yoshiko might do, though Riko wasn’t sure how to go about confirming the idea as it seemed rude to ask the reasons behind another's help.

Yoshiko murmured again and tugged her pillow almost out from under her head before hugging it like a teddy bear and nuzzling into it. Cute. Riko smiled as she was now curious if Yoshiko typically slept with one of her many oddly adorable plushies.

As she watched Yoshiko’s slow, rhythmic breathing, RIko couldn’t help starting to wonder what it might be like to see her closer up. How would the other girl react if Riko were to slide under the covers beside her? What might it be like to wake up to such a scene every morning? What might it be like to…

Riko rolled on to her side, away from the girl on the futon. She squeezed her eyes shut and silently begged whatever deity might listen to allow her to rest.

Riko awoke, shivering and gasping for breath.

“Riri…?” a soft voice questioned.

“I’m… fine…” Riko managed to get out. “You can go back to sleep, Yocchan.”

“Mmm…”

Riko’s hand trembled as she reached for a towel on the nightstand. Her muscles ached as though she had just run a kilometer or two.

Though the visuals were blurry, the emotions remained vivid in her mind. There was no way that had been a nightmare. Riko was convinced her mind had just acted out some rather intense scenes of intimacy with…

Yocchan…

She couldn’t deny it any longer; perhaps it had been foolish to even try in the first place. She was definitely dreaming about Yoshiko. Her roommate. Her friend.

But what would Yoshiko feel about this?

Riko had never been clear on the younger girl’s standings with her peers, Hanamaru and Ruby. Or even Leah for that matter. Yoshiko often talked about all three and was always excited to see them, more so it seemed, than others among their mutual friends. Did she like any of them in that way? Had Riko missed something at some point? Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be the first time Riko had been oblivious to those kinds of feelings among her friends. She could spot the tropes a mile away in her doujin, but was lacking in her observations of the real world.

She would have to get better in her observations or risk making similar mistakes as she had in the past, or possibly missing out on something wonderful. But how? Who could she talk to? She immediately dismissed her peers along with her juniors. Maybe one of her seniors? Riko rolled onto her side, away from the distracting presence of her roommate and considered her options while awaiting sleep to return.

“Riri.”

Riko’s eyes opened slowly as she felt a hand gently shake her shoulder.

“Riri.” The voice repeated.

Riko groaned and rolled to face the other girl.

“You slept through your alarm.” Yoshiko explained with a concerned expression. “Maybe you should email your professors and skip classes today?”

“I’ll go…”

“Are you sure? One day probably won’t hurt a good student like you.”

“Mmm…”

“Anyway, breakfast is ready if you want it.”

Riko nodded and started to get out of bed.

“Uhm…” Yoshiko fidgeted a bit as she backed up a few steps to allow the other girl room. “There’s one more thing I’d like to try, if you’ll let me.”

Riko smiled. Her roommate’s steadfast devotion to ensuring her wellbeing was quite endearing. “Whatever you think might help.”

“It’s a pretty big ritual.”

“Alright…”

“But I’ll try not to make to much of a mess.”

Riko chuckled.

“There will be candles.”

“Mmm…”

“And incense.”

“That’s fine.”

“Alright then.” Yoshiko nodded, surprisingly solemnly. She then turned to leave. “Bathroom’s yours.” She tossed over her shoulder.

Riko trudged into the apartment, kicked off her shoes, dropped her bag in the entryway and shuffled toward her bedroom. She had barely made it through her first classes and finally decided to take Yoshiko’s advice and skip the few that remained.

Yocchan…

Just laying down on her bed was enough to conjure up remnants of the dreams.

Yocchan…

She glanced at the futon folded in the corner with Yoshiko’s blanket and pillow on top, waiting to possibly be used again tonight.

Yocchan…

Riko closed her eyes.

Yocchan…

She gritted her teeth. She needed to do something. Something. Anything. She needed to satiate…

Yocchan…

She let her hand begin to explore…

“Yocchan!”

“Riri?” A voice called from the entryway. “Are you home?”

“I’m here.” Riko left the restroom, relieved her roommate hadn’t returned earlier. “You’re home early.”

“So are you.” Yoshiko rounded the corner to meet the other girl in the hallway. “Everything alright?”

“Yeah,” The redhead nodded. “I just ran out of steam and decided to take your advice. I actually just got up from a nap.”

“Did it help?”

“I think so.”

“That’s good.” The blue-haired girl smiled. “Anyway, the professor for my last class is sick and didn’t give his TA a lesson plan for the day, so I decided to get an early start on setting up my ritual.”

“Go ahead.” Riko motioned toward her bedroom. “I’ll get started on making dinner.”

“Sounds good.”

Riko sat on the edge of her bed, watching her roommate. Yoshiko had a feather in her bun and was dressed in her favorite set of pajamas covered by her favorite cape. Smoke rose from a stick of incense on the desk; sandalwood, if Riko remembered correctly. Several candles burned in various positions around the room and a large cloth sheet with a printed ritual circle lay on the floor. Finally, a mug with a cute, smiling demon face on its side and filled with a warm liquid sat waiting on the nightstand.

“The deities of nighttime and dreams can often be clever and conniving.” Yoshiko intoned. “The one we with which we are dealing has masked their presence well. Yohane, a fallen angel who is intimately familiar with the darkest of magics, finds herself unable to detect any amount of corruption or ill intent within these walls. The source of the nightmares that torment her little demon Riri remains unclear.”

Probably because they aren’t nightmares… Riko thought to herself. She took a slow breath, enjoying the earthy and soothing fragrances from the incense.

“Therefore, this ritual shall not be restrained by focusing on nightmares.”

What? Riko started paying closer attention to her roommate’s performance.

“Instead, we shall banish all dreams and disruptions to sleep! Upon completion, only peace and tranquil rest shall remain! Riri!” She called, pointing to the redhead. She then moved her hand to indicate something else. “Consume the elixir of serenity!”

“This?” Riko picked up the mug.

“Indeed. Yohane prepared a special batch of her favorite potion for sleep. Sip of it slowly. Savor its soothing properties as I complete the ritual.”

“Alright.” Riko lifted the drink to her lips and tasted it. There was no denying the main ingredient to this potion, or rather tea, was chamomile, which was fine because it was a flavor she enjoyed. There were other subtler flavors that Riko didn’t readily recognize but assumed were similar herbs believed to be helpful sleep aids.

Yoshiko began to murmur in a language Riko did not understand, though she was pretty sure she recognized the name of one or two deities. Many of her phrases were accompanied by hand gestures and dramatic movements.

Riko tipped the mug up to drain the last drops.

“And with that, the ritual is complete!” Yoshiko posed.

“That was delicious.” Riko said as she returned the mug to the nightstand. “What was in it? I mean I know the chamomile and milk, but…”

“Yohane does not normally reveal the secret recipes of her concoctions, but she can make an exception for her most elite little demon. It is infused with valerian root, jasmine and a hint of lemon balm.”

Riko wasn’t familiar with some of those items. “Well, it was delicious.”

“’Tis my greatest hope that it allows you a good night’s slumber.”

“I’m sure it will.” Riko smiled gently. “Thank you, Yocchan.”

Yoshiko returned a toothy grin of her own.

“Shall we turn in?”

“Right, let me just set up the futon.”

“Need help?”

“I’m good, thanks.” Yoshiko moved to retrieve the bedding. “Riri can go to sleep.”

“Alright.” Riko slipped under her comforter. However, she didn’t close her eyes right away, instead, she watched the other girl until she was settled as well. “Good night, Yocchan.”

“Good night, Riri.”

“Good morning, Yocchan!” Riko said cheerfully as her roommate shuffled into the kitchen.

“Mornin,’ Riri…” Yoshiko responded before yawning. “So… it would seem… the ritual worked?”

“I believe so.” Riko confirmed, moving the food around in the pan as she cooked.

Yoshiko breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s good.”

“Mmm.”

“Well, if you need me to perform it again tonight…”

“I think I’ll be good for a while, thanks.”

“Oh, alright.”

Riko thought she detected just a hint of disappointment in Yoshiko’s voice.

“But, I might request another batch of your wonderful sleep potion.”

“The elixir of serenity?”

“Yeah, that one.”

“I can do that.”

Riko smiled at the obvious excitement. Even if it had all been a big show, she appreciated the amount of effort Yoshiko had put in to helping her the last few nights. And she had helped, more than she probably realized and almost certainly not in the way she believed.

As soon as Riko brought over the food and took a seat, Yoshiko started talking about something going on in her drama class to which she was looking forward. Riko smiled as the first normal breakfast of the week began.

Author’s Note Continued: I realized while writing this that I put its intended previous chapter, Bed Bath and Bewildered, too soon in the existing timeline. As such I will be moving it once I post this chapter.

Perhaps worth noting that I do not wish to make it seem like external, supernatural forces are the sole reason Riko ends up falling for Yohane. I would like to get around to writing more scenes about some of the more natural attractions that develop between the two, preferably from both perspectives. However, as with much of what I want to write, I am still awaiting the release of the movie to finalize certain details.
