I have a few AUs concerning the trio (Alabaster, Ethan, Luke) + Claymore that I don't know how to write so I'll just share it here just in case anyone wants to use it
1. Ghostbuster!AU. Alabaster and Ethan are permanent member, while Luke is Ethan's friend/neighbour who sometimes gets roped into their newest mission.
2. Highschool!AU. I don't know what to do with this but I just want them to live a normal, teenage life. Oh and also, Doctor Howard Claymore is a teacher (and practically Alabaster's dad but they always deny it. Stubborn to a fault indeed.)
3. Social media!AU. I also don't know what to do with this one. Maybe a Youtuber AU would work, too. Basically they are all famous and roast each other's content on daily basis even though they're friends.
4. Ghost!AU. Can be canon compliant can be not. It's just lonely ol' Alabaster explore a haunted house and accidentally summons the ghosts of Ethan Nakamura and Luke Castellan.
5. Another take of ghost!AU. Instead of Ethan and Luke, an orphaned Alabaster accidentally summons the ghost of Dr. Howard Claymore instead, and now he won't go away and fuss over him!
That's it for now. I'll probably write the fifth and second one when I have time. Honestly I just can't get enough with Dad!Claymore. Also I hc him as aro (because that one line when he said he live completely alone and content? Dude, peak aro dream *sigh dreamily*). And he's a badass even though he was kind of a jerk at first (but I get his reasoning)

Eleven songs that Mary Steele recorded between October 1919 and ca. May 1921 were released on discs. This collection includes seven of those along with two sides by her sometimes accompanists, the Antoniou Brothers. She was one of only only four women to have recorded in the Turkish language (the only one who wasn’t Greek, it turns out), the second woman to have recorded in Arabic, and the only Woman and in Albanian in the U.S during the 1910s and 20s. Phrases in both Armenian and Kurdish turn up in her recordings. Because of her broad linguistic capabilities and her Anglicized name, she baffled me for years - who was she? where was she from? - and I would not have known anything substantial about her had I not been contacted by her great-grandnephew Rob Steel. He has done a lot of research on her, providing a basis from which I could do some more investigation. What follows is an amalgamation of what we have learned.
Mary Steele was born in Mersin, Turkey February 21, 1887, the sixth of eight children. Steele’s father was Hanna Luke Boulad, born July 15, 1856 in Aintab (now Gaziantep) in southern Turkey who came from a Melkite Catholic family. While attending a Presbyterian missionary college in Mersin he met Mary’s mother Freda, a fellow student, who had been born in Aleppo, Syria August 31, 1860. They were married and had their first child Phoebe in 1875 in Gaziantep. Over the next 25 years, Hanna took various teaching jobs back and forth from one city to the next, spending a few years in Mersin, a few in Gaziantep, then Tarsus, then back to Gaziantep, then Mersin, back to Gazientep, back to Mersin, then finally, by 1900, to Beirut by which time they had eight children, all boys except Phoebe, the oldest, and Mary, who was then 13.
At the urging of a missionary neighbor in Beirut, an American Consul named Dr. Metheny, they sent their two eldest sons, Saul and Alex, to the U.S. In 1901, they sent two more sons William and John. By 1902, Freda Boulad was disconsolate at the breakup of her family, so, with sponsorship from the Presbyterian church, Hanna sold his possessions and packed up the family of including his wife, two small boys,15-year-old Mary, her older sister Phoebe, and Phoebe’s husband and two children, and they sailed from Beirut to Marseille to Philadelphia, arriving August 13, 1902.
The family settled in south Philadelphia. By 1910 56 year old Hanna had left behind the life of a scholar and was working as an upholsterer, living on Glenmore Ave. with his wife, a 27 year old son Joseph (also in upholstering), his wife Christine and their two children, and an 11 year old son Benjamin (working in a soap factory). The family name Boulad (meaning, roughly, “strong” in Arabic) had been changed at the port to Steele, and Hanna was called John. His gifts for language were utilized periodically, including, according to family lore, consultation with Egyptologist Dr. Howard Carter (best known at the discoverer of Tutankhamen’s grave), but he resigned himself, unhappily it seems, to American life.
While most of the family stayed settled in the working-class south Philly suburbs of Glenolden and Collingdale for decades, Mary Steele traveled. Family documents refer to her having been married at 14, but the first marriage we’re fairly sure of is to one William Gladstone Richardson in January 1912 in either Iowa City or Chicago, depending on which document can believed. Richardson was Mary’s age, 25 at the time, and a native of Farina IL. They apparently had a child and were still married and living together in St. Louis, Missouri in 1920. Richardson he died in 1958, now buried in Ronan, Montana.
Steele seems to have spent the better part of 30 years living the life of a performer on the road. She turned up in in New York City at the age of 32 for six recording sessions for the Victor company from October 2 through December 24, 1919. Accompanied by a portly pair of cymbalom- and clarinet-playing Greek brothers from Samos (an island that remained a semi-independent Ottoman territory until it was repatriated to Greece in 1913 during the First Balkan War), she initially recorded four songs in Arabic. The first disc was given a write-up blurb in Victor’s Arabic catalog of the time:
“The first selection ‘My Rose’ tells of a youth’s ardent admiration for his sweetheart whose beauty he compares to the rose. In the song on the reverse of the record, ‘Father I Want to Get Married,” a girl confesses to her father her love for a blind man and she tells him that even his misfortune will not detain her from marrying him. The composer, Mme S. Mary, a new Victor artist, sings these Syrian melodies to the accompaniment of cymbal and clarinet.”
A few days later, the Antoniou Brothers made four instrumental sides which were released as part of Victor’s Greek series, two of which include Steele playing percussion (and on one of which she can be heard shouting encouragement to the players in the background). The trio returned to the studio every couple weeks over the next two months, cutting four songs in Greek and Albanian over and over again. Victor’s recordists must have thought they had something special in Steele as a performer to let her cut the song “Cuchawaki (The Gamblers)” a total of fifteen times, “Ismenyes” twelve times, and “Ardhi Koha A Bekuar” eleven times during a period when most immigrant musicians got only one or two takes to complete a performance for release. Only the latter of those three songs, translated from Albanian as “Hurrah for the Nation” was ever issued with “Flamuri (The Flag)” (completed in three takes) as its flip, likely as an attempt to salvage something salable from the sessions. The disc sold poorly, which is unsurprising given that the Albanian-speaking population of the U.S. numbered only a few thousand at the time. (Notably, Victor only ever issued four other discs in Albanian, all recorded in 1917-18 by Giuseppe Mauro with accompaniment by the house orchestra before trying one last time in 1924 when they issued five songs by Adreas Pappas-Athanas Mone.)
Around March of 1921, she recorded again, this time with a new band for Columbia at their Woolworth Building studios. In two sessions, she knocked out five songs in a combination of Turkish and Arabic in one or two takes. One of the songs was issued as the flip side of a song by Marika Papagika (one of the rare instances of Papagika singing in Turkish). After her session in May 1921, she never recorded again.
The 1930 census found Steele living with a Greek man named Stelianos Grigorlides at the New Jackson Hotel in Chicago’s Greektown, giving her occupation as “dancer” and her language spoken other than English as “Armenian.” May 1931, she married an Athenian named George Zamanos in New York City, but it didn’t last. By 1935, at the age of 48, she heeded the family call and moved to Jacksonville, Florida to take care of her then-widowed mother Freda. Her brother John (b. 1886) died that year; Alex (b. 1882) had died in 1915. While she was there, she filed her Declaration of Intent to naturalize as a U.S. citizen, having lived as an alien in this country for 35 years. She gave her race and nationality as “Armenian.” We can only speculate that as a Christian from Turkey, having lived among Greeks and Armenians in nightclubs, theaters, and coffeehouses for decades, her identification with those groups was stronger, or potentially easier for mainstream America to comprehend, than with her Arab family. Or perhaps her mother was Armenian?
By 1940, Mary Steele had resettled closer to her remaining family in south Philadelphia at 2535 67th St. living with an Armenian rug cleaner named Harry Hachrian, who was listed as a lodger in a house she owned. She gave her marital status as “widow,” but in March 1944 she filed a summons for divorce against George Zamanos in Nevada, apparently the last place she knew that he’d lived.
She apparently died in 1948, about age 60.
Her younger brother Joseph, born Sept. 6, 1895 in Gaziantep, also wound up working in show-biz as Ingrid Bergman’s business manager. In 1959, he published a memoir titled Ingrid Bergman: An Intimate Portrait. He died in 1980.

BREAKING NEWS: DAYS OF INFAMY
Bittersweet farewells and death-defying cheers were witnessed as 5 of SIX: The Musical's queens take their final bows on the 12th and 13th of October, 2019.
SIX alternate and swing Courtney Stapleton donned the Seymour crown one last time in the 12th's matinee performance; she has announced her departure of the show earlier this June and will serve as the understudy for the roles of Zoe Murphy and Alana Beck in the upcoming Dear Evan Hansen West End production this November.
Alongside her last SIX performance was Shekinah McFarlane's last go as Aragon at The Arts Theatre; McFarlane, who served as an alternate for Aragon and Cleves, will be joining the SIX UK tour cast which was announced last 5th of September.
The 13th's audience members witnessed the tearful goodbyes and the emotional atmosphere at the theatre during Millie O'Connell, Maiya Quansah-Breed, and Aimie Atkinson's final bows as West End's Anne Boleyn, Catherine Parr and Katherine Howard.
The show was made even more heartbreaking as Millie, Aimie and Maiya share their final megasix with not only their original West End castmates, but also SIX's own alternates, swings and understudies: Courtney Stapleton, Vicki Manser, Shekinah McFarlane, Collette Guitart, and former dance captain and alternate Grace Mouat who has left last August and is now serving as first cover for the titular role in &Juliet, all wearing their costumes, spending 5 more minutes on stage with each other.
A lot of fans have described the series of shows on the 12th and 13th as devastatingly depressing, with many pointing out that some of the actresses weren't able to complete their songs due to sadness and crying their hearts out, citing Natalie May Paris not being able to complete "Heart of Stone", Courtney Stapleton in tears at the end of her HOS, and Maiya Quansah-Breed breaking down at the end of "I Don't Need Your Love" as examples.
The queens went to social media to express their love and gratitude for the show and their sisters, saying that SIX has truly changed their lives and that in their heart, they will always be queens.
Courtney Bowman and Danielle Steers will take on the mantles of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Parr respectively, debuting on the 14th of October alongside Vicki Manser's principal role debut as Katherine Howard.
Vicki Manser, who was scheduled to leave the show on October until last 26th of September wherein Aimie announced her decision to depart from the show, will fill in as Howard until the 15th of December.
Zara Macintosh, Hana Steward and Cherelle Jay are now SIX's new alternate trio, with the latter debuting as a SIX queen later this week.
On the other hand, Millie will be starring as Velcro in the West End production of Soho Cinders alongside Luke Bayer. No official announcements have been made by either Maiya or Aimie regarding their future projects; however, despite the fact that Aimie has recently been in a new British musical called "Lilith", it is unclear whether she will be working on this in the meantime. No concrete details have also been released on whether or not Aimie will come back to SIX or if she has left for good.

Horse Meat Disco grace Glitterbox Recordings with their first ever full-length album ’Love And Dancing’, a joyous, 14-track collection of the nightlife titans’ exquisite productions. The four-strong DJ collective of Luke Howard, Severino Panzetta, James Hillard and Jim Stanton started their disco shenanigans on New Year’s Day, 2004 at The Eagle, Vauxhall and over the 16 years since, their nightlife tenure has seen them become a global brand. With residences in Berlin, New York, Lisbon and their London bedrock, as well as regular appearances at Glitterbox parties across the globe, the group have become one of the most revered and adored acts on the international club circuit.
Now evolving from expert selectors to creative, freewheeling disco inventors, the group have fashioned a record gilded with the fleet-footed spirit of their disco forebears. Under the masterful tuition of nightlife don Luke Solomon, ’Love And Dancing’ is the culmination of seven years’ work, fashioned from the demos the four have been working on simply for the love of making music. Free of cover versions and tired samples, it is documentary evidence that disco has a present and future every bit the platinum-grade equal of its storied past.
Working with an array of A-List collaborators including close friend, main feature and co-writer on the album Amy Douglas, founding member of Sister Sledge Kathy Sledge, acid jazz pioneer N'Dea Davenport, rising star Fiorious and the inimitable trio Dames Brown. Those Who Fall: “APTF” Story (Modern Domestic Stucky AU)
Nineteen:
"You cannot tell me that Return to Halloweentown is better than Kalabar's Revenge!" Jonas's voice heatedly exclaimed from the back door.
Smiling, Steve stood from his seat on the couch. Wanda turned her head to look towards the kitchen just as Katie loudly confirmed, "I said what I said. Kalabar's Revenge has that weird ass filter and Halloweentown doesn't even look like Halloweentown! It looks like it could've been filmed in our driveway!"
"We're not talking about which one looks more like Halloweentown," Jonas argued, "We're talking about which movie is better acted and has a better story."
This wasn't exactly the impression Steve wanted Wanda to have of Jonas and Katie. Not that it wasn't how they normally were. Just… he hoped that they would've bonded more before the loud, opinionated movie discussions started.
Glancing over at Wanda, he found her staring into the kitchen with her mouth open and her brows arched high on her forehead. Sheepishly, Steve shrugged as he clarified, "Our family's really passionate about Halloween. Especially the movies."
"I can see that," Wanda weakly giggled.
Steve nodded and headed for the kitchen. At the table, Katie tightened the orangey-red messy bun on the top of her head, "I don't care. Sara Paxton is a goddess, my guy."
Jonas shook his head as he grabbed a cookie from the seasonal witch ceramic jar that Bucky made. It was lopsided and the cookies hardly stayed fresh for long, but Steve refused to put any other cookie jar out for Halloween. Steve had even joked that he'd want to use it as an urn when he went. Bucky never found that funny.
"Kimberly J. Brown gave us hit --" Jonas chopped the side of his hand into his palm to accentuate his point "-- after hit, and you're just going to disrespect her like that?!"
Stuffing an entire purple sugar cookie into his mouth, Jonas went to continue talking, but Steve immediately reprimanded him. "Jonas Howard, take smaller bites. You know better than that. You're going to choke."
"I don't know, pops," Katie deadpanned, "I heard he's into that sort of thing."
Coughing and hitting his chest, Jonas was very obviously choking on the cookie, which made Katie laugh. Steve grabbed the oldest teen a glass of water to help soothe his throat and tried not to think about his child's sex life because that was definitely too much for him, as their father, to know. Instead, he decided to change the subject. Setting his hands on his hips, he looked over his kids. Jonas standing beside him, next to the cookie jar and Katie sitting at the table on her phone.
Feigning offense, Steve accused, "So, you go away to school and suddenly you can't give me a hug?"
Katie rolled her eyes, but a smirk was fighting to tug her lips upward. She stood from her seat and walked around the kitchen table to Steve. Being taller than Steve, the 5'11" girl bent her knees to hug his 5'4" frame more comfortably. With his arms around her, Katie let out a breath of relief and her body started to ease. Knowing that she had been homesick and anxious being away at college for the first time, he rubbed her back and held her just a little longer.
"I missed you," Steve reminded her, just as he always did during the occasional phone calls and the group facetimes and, more often, text messages. Because he did. He missed her. He missed tripping over her shoes that she left abandoned in the foyer. He missed finding her awake at six in the morning on a Saturday with a half drunk mug of cookies and cream coffee and thick glasses on as she started a Lifetime movie marathon. Missed her baking with Bucky on a Sunday afternoon. Missed her and her friends being too loud on a Friday night and having to remind them that the little kids were sleeping.
Katie held Steve a little tighter, "I missed you, too."
"I missed you, most!" Jonas playfully stated, wrapping his wiry arms around them both.
"I don't think so, mister," Steve argued. Because even though this was Jonas's second year at the university, Steve still missed him. Missed him sitting on the couch on a Tuesday night, teaching Bucky a new crochet stitch. Missed him helping Luke with his homework after school. Missed him asking how he looked before going on a date. Missed the Sunday Sunrise yoga that the pair would do almost religiously because it helped alleviate Steve's arthritis pain while stretching his scoliosis riddled spine, and Jonas didn't like his pops being in pain. And Steve missed him. Just missed him. No matter how many years he had a chance to get used to it, he never truly would.
Steve was positive that he'd miss his kids no matter how many years passed. Or how often they talk on the phone. Or how many holidays they visit for. He'd still miss having them home all the time. It made his heart hurt to think about what'll be like once they move out officially and they stop coming home for summer vacation.
And Steve knew that although she hadn't been in their lives long, he'd miss Wanda once she left, too.
Speaking of Wanda, Steve whispered, "Wanda is in the living room. And I need you to be on your best behavior. Or at least not yell every five minutes."
"Sounds like you're askin' for a lot," Katie joked, not seeming convinced that she could remember her inside voice.
Smiling, Steve half-joked, "Please, don't scare her off."
"Are you kidding? She's going to love us," Jonas confidently assured.
Steve playfully rolled his eyes and accused, "You've been talking to Uncle Sammy too much."
Glancing over at the living room, Steve watched Wanda snap her attention back to the TV. Almost as though she didn't want them to know that she was eavesdropping. Not that any of them would've cared.
Giving them both a squeeze, he removed himself and started through the dining room. Reaching the living room, Steve grabbed some knick knacks from the tub. As he crossed over to the book shelves on either side of the fireplace, Katie took a seat on the opposite end of the gray sofa from Wanda and Jonas plopped down in the purple velvet armchair.
"Wanda," Steve started as he introduced the three, "This is Katie and Jonas."
"Hi," Wanda shyly greeted, still holding that metallic silver pillow to her torso. Almost as though she was trying to hide her abdomen. Which Steve found to be odd, but didn't vocally question. If Wanda didn't want to draw attention to it, then he wouldn't.
Bringing his leg up to rest his ankle on his knee, Jonas leaned against the black and white striped pillow and asked, "Got roped into helping decorating?"
"Volunteered," Wanda corrected, giving him a small smile.
"Would you like to help us bake cookies instead?" Katie offered, "Might be more fun than decorating, at least. Even if it is with this bum."
Theatrically, Jonas gasped and touched his chest like a damsel in an old Victorian novel, "The audacity."
"What kind of cookies are you making?" Wanda asked, subtly sniffling.
"The Pillsbury classics," Jonas answered while Katie clarified, "Ghosts and pumpkins."
With his back to the kids, Steve froze. Facing the bookshelf as he set up the more breakable items out of reach of the younger kids, Steve's eyes widened. He couldn't believe that he had forgotten about picking up breakaway Pillsbury sugar cookies. Of course, things had been hectic, so he didn't think the kids would be too upset at him, but he still worried about upsetting them.
"Pops?" Katie prompted.
Sheepishly, Steve turned and explained, "I forgot to pick up the cookies."
"Well," Jonas ran his hand through his two-strand twist locs. The vibrant midnight blue reminded Steve of an ocean at nighttime while also noticing how it complimented Jonas's dark olive-brown complexion. Standing, he pulled his keys from his pocket, "Who wants to go buy cookies?"
"Ooh!" Katie nodded, setting down the ghost plush and turning towards Wanda. She offered, "You wanna join?"
Sincerely shocked, Wanda asked, "Really?"
"Yeah," Katie confirmed as she stood up fixing her green sweatshirt with a picture of a beetle, a plus sign, and a picture of a glass of orange juice.
"If you want to," Jonas added.
Wanda looked up at Steve, almost as though she was asking for permission, Steve picked up a ceramic ghost and smiled, "I don't mind. I can finish up."
"You're sure?" Wanda placed the pillow beside her and pushed herself up from the sofa. The bump starting to throw of her balance, Katie subtly took a step forward, ready to catch her if she needed to.
"I'm positive," Steve waved them off, "Go, have fun!"
"Do we need anything else?" Jonas asked, twirling his keys around his index finger.
Biting his lip, Steve admitted, "Pizza crust."
"Pops," Katie dramatically groaned, as she threw her head back in her playful annoyance. Tightening her bun, she looked over at Steve and said, "We'll be back soon."
"I'll be here," Steve set the cheerful, cute ceramic figure on the shelf and called, "My wallet is next to the coffee maker!"
Discreetly, Steve watched as the trio headed for the door. Smiling when Katie complimented Wanda's velvet black sweater, and chuckling under his breath when Jonas wondered if he could borrow it sometimes. Not necessarily amused that he asked to borrow a maternity top, but that he had asked, so soon after meeting her, to borrow it.
Steve felt light though. Knowing that his children were accepting a new sibling so easily, warmed him to his very core. He only hoped that once Wanda turned eighteen, she'd stick around. If only because Steve didn't want her alone. He didn't want her to struggle, especially not with the baby. It probably should've surprised Steve how much he cared for the girl after such a short time, but after fostering many children over the years, it didn't anymore. He loved all the kids that lived with them. Whether it was permanent or temporary, Steve loved them all.

The Alienist: Angel of Darkness Episode 1 Review: Ex Ore Infantium

The Alienist Season 2 Episode 1
Times have certainly changed. I’m not comparing today’s world to that of 1897; the scenes in the premiere of The Alienist: Angel of Darkness featuring police brutalizing innocent protesters highlights that society hasn’t evolved that much. No, I’m talking about the world in which The Alienist’s first “event” season arrived in compared to the TV landscape that the second outing arrives in today. The Alienist’s first good, not quite great, season was dinged for arriving in a crowded pack of shows with similar subject matter or period settings. However, The Alienist: Angel of Darkness appears to be one of the last big cable series to debut before the coronavirus and its effect on television production schedules creates a void in available new content. Instead of being the latest of many, it now feels like one of the last of a few.
Perhaps that feeling made reuniting with Daniel Brühl’s tortured genius Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, Dakota Fanning’s strong-willed Sara Howard, and Luke Evan’s charming John Moore more exciting than the prospect initially sounded. The trio certainly had a unique dynamic and chemistry that propelled the show through some clunky writing, but The Alienist was pitched as a one-and-done series and told a complete story that offered satisfying character arcs for its three leads. Despite there being more of Caleb Carr’s source material to adapt, the announcement of a second season felt unnecessary; we told Kreizler and company’s story and it was time to move on.
Still, reuniting with the three leads — watching Sara lead her own private detective agency, John rubbing elbows with members of high society, and Kreizler brooding his way through a new injustice in a bustling New York — felt satisfying. Perhaps quarantine has made The Alienist’s world feel strangely preferable, even with its own dramas and germs. Maybe the comfortable narrative structure of a whodunit without the complicated inclusion of a cop among the bunch helps on some level too. I’m not saying “Ex Ore Infantium” is without its issues, but at the moment, I’m happy to be back on the case with this trio.
The Alienist: Angel of Darkness scores its easiest points by doubling down on Sara Howard. The character, propelled by Fanning’s performance, was a frequent highlight the first time around, and it appears as if the series is putting her more at the center of things this year. Sara is leading her own agency, and along with her friends, finds herself deeply disturbed by and determined to stop a planned execution. A woman named Martha is receiving the death penalty for supposedly murdering her child, despite there not being any evidence. Sara, John, and Kreizler, who fought on the woman’s behalf at her trial, try to leverage their connection to Teddy Roosevelt (who in real-life was serving as Assistant Security of the Navy and doesn’t appear to be returning as a character) to delay the electrocution, but their efforts aren’t successful. The electrocution is pretty graphic, but it pales in comparison to what comes later.

Though all three of our main characters pledge to continue to fight for justice, it’s Sara that stumbles on proof that Martha may be innocent and that a child killer may still be at large. A Spanish dignitary and his wife are visiting the city when their child is kidnapped and replaced with a horrific doll. The case is first brought to Sara, as her efforts to clear Martha’s name made her appear as sympathetic to women that are cast aside as being “hysterical.” Sara’s pitch to take on the investigation without the help of the police is excellent; she’s compassionate and full of empathy, yet confident and resolute, making it clear that she’s the only person in New York with the acumen and sensitivity to handle the case.
She also makes it clear that Dr. Kreizler will only be consulted as needed. Though they may have made up in last season’s finale, it’s clear that the incident which involved Kreizler striking Sara still lingers over their relationship. They may be able to work together in a professional setting, but it’s obvious there’s an awkwardness between the pair when they meet one on one. Unfortunately, the scene with Kreizler meeting with Sara in her office is hindered by some over-written dialogue. Usually the actors on The Alienist are so good that they can elevate clunky passages, but when the characters are supposed to be displaying discomfort and awkwardness, it makes the problems with the script more obvious. There’s ungraceful exposition all over this premiere, but perhaps that’s just necessary table-setting.
The other problem with the episode is the gratuitous dead baby shots. A deceased child is found at a toy store in the city, believed to be the missing child that Sara is searching for. Like Perry Mason earlier this summer, The Alienist goes a bit overboard showing us the body. I understand that the series is supposed to be “dark” but it definitely feels like a bit much. However, the discovery of the child finally brings our team from last season back together as a unit, even if Sara is the only person officially on the case. Kreizler starts musing about the meaning of the dolls in the kidnapping, and after her quick education working by his side last season, Sara is more than following along, offering up her own theories. Though the writing feels strained at times, I really enjoy the direction this season seems to be heading in, with Sara taking the lead in a case with the progressive campaign for suffrage serving as a backdrop. I may have cringed at some overly expository lines of dialogue, but I lit up seeing Sara charge through an immaculately staged 1897 New York avenue. The production design is top-notch on The Alienist, making it beautiful to look at even when the script suffers (and as long as there are no dead babies on screen). The Alienist may not have needed to return for a second outing, but I’m glad that it’s here.
