Pain de Mie
Today I am making a Pain de Mie, a sandwich loaf made in a pullman loaf pan. It comes with a lid so the bread will have the same sides all around. It is a soft, dense bread just right for sandwiches. I made it once before. The lid popped off in the oven. The sides were even and yes, it was a good bread. I am making it again to see if I have the same luck.
It has taken a while to recover from the…

Do whatever you must to quiet your mind
Robert: You have to use whatever method you need at the time. Whatever you have to do, you have to do. But we share all these different methods so you can do something.
Student: As the mind becomes quieter, as we surrender, then we would automatically use the best method.
Robert: Yes, to the extent your mind becomes quieter, to that extent does your reality become seen or felt, and it's intuitive. It will tell you what to do. It will guide you and lead you in every direction. But the mind has to be quiet, that's the first requisite. And to quiet the mind use whatever method you have to. I know some people who really get angry with their mind, and it worked for them and they shout at it, they say, "Shut up mind, I don't want to hear a word you say, keep yourself still! I can't stand you anymore. Shut up! I don't believe you, you don't exist." And they had a talk with the mind for about a half hour and the mind quiets down. You have to use whatever method you have to use. But the whole idea is to quiet the mind and everything will happen of its own accord. Believe nothing, just practice and see what happens.
Student: Robert, the mind can be quiet but isn't the presence also necessary? Because a lot of the Buddhist texts speak of the person whose mind is quiet but their consciousness is hazy, they're like in a daze or a daydream; they're not present or aware.
Robert: The presence is always there. What happens when you quiet the mind is that the presence becomes more dominant.
Student: I read in that book that you showed me that said that there was a disciple of Ramana who sat in the hall for long hours and he was able to stop thinking but he wasn't in the correct state and Ramana made him go for walks and everything. (Robert: Oh yes.) What was that all about? His mind was quiet and yet it wasn't the correct state?
Robert: Well because fear was coming in. He began to become fearful. He picked up a lot of fear. The way he quieted his mind, whatever method he used caused fears to come in more powerful.
Student: But how can you call it a quiet mind if there was fear present?
Robert: It wasn't really quiet. It was never quiet. But there was fear, so he made him walk around.
Student: Oh, so it was a feeling of fear.
Robert: It was a feeling of fear, yes.
Student: So that's also a mental construct, fear and emotions are also (that)…
Robert: Of course. That's why I say you don't have to use one particular method to quiet your mind. Do whatever you have to do to quiet your mind. And everything will take care of itself. Everybody's different, what's good for you may not be good for somebody else. So that's why I never say, "This is the only method." You have to do whatever is right for yourself; practice, find out. If you read too much you can never find out. Be alone with yourself. Find out what makes you tick and everything will work out.

Kira for the ask game, because I've sewn you mentioned liking her but haven't seen you talk about it much yet and would like to enable you
Yayy thank you!! (and I'm sorry I took so long to respond, it's been a very hectic week😅)
one aspect about them i love
Kira really embodies a lot of what I miss most about Star Trek tbh, which was the real desire to make the audience uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong; there is a lot about TOS, TNG and DS9 that didn't age well- but I still think an important goal they all shared was to take certain ideas and ideologies that might've seemed far-fetched to the audience of the time, and say- "why not?" Also, "Does this character's existence- and presence- make you uncomfortable? Well, maybe that's a YOU problem." And that's a goal which (imo) really faded over the years, because they grew more and more afraid of turning off the conservative audience. But not with Kira! Within minutes of her introduction, she offers a scathing shutdown of the "frontier" that Star Trek was quite literally built upon. She is literally a sympathetic "terrorist" MAIN character (rare enough), and furthermore a woman- and that too a "difficult" woman, who refuses to let herself be ignored or compromise her people's needs for the Starfleet crew's comfort (!!!), who is ANGRY and deeply religious and nationalistic and PROACTIVE and stomps around and shouts and cries and disagrees and wears her passion on her sleeve and is not at all afraid to make a nuisance of herself- and yet, still has numerous flaws and so many moments of self-doubt and raw vulnerability. What a fantastic character! This was 1993; I can think of so few TV women from that era who actively challenged the constructs (and men) around them so much. I love everything she represents
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
That her arc is more about learning to land upon nuance; not toning down her Bajoran-isms. Her patriotism and faith do occasionally steer her the wrong way, yes- but Kira's growth doesn't at all involve her renouncing either of those things! If anything, it's Sisko who ends up having to adjust to her perspectives. In general I'm always craving more nuanced discussions re DS9's postcolonial dynamics, too- Kira has such a range of interactions with Cardassians on the show, and numerous episodes ('Destiny', 'Life Support', 'Ties of Blood and Water', etc) show that she's genuinely invested in peace between their peoples; something I think often goes ignored. Yes, she's justifiably furious about everything they did to her home- but at the end of the day, what she wants is justice and reparations for Bajor and Bajorans; and if a small (understandable) part of her does want to see Cardassia crash and burn, she really doesn't act upon it
Also, she's funny! Remember when she told Dukat the baby was O'Brien's with no further explanation? Lmaoo what a troll
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
That she only received a very basic education. She does mention finger painting and playing springball as a kid, but also- Kira grew up in a refugee camp and she joined the Shakaar cell at age 12; she probably missed out on the higher education even the average Bajoran of her generation received (which itself was likely Cardassian State-controlled). Idk, this is low key important to me because so many Star Trek characters are almost like- defined by their scientific and educational smarts, if that makes sense? It's refreshing to see a Trek character who doesn't quite make sense of herself or the world around her primarily through (Western) scientific constructs
Also, Kira absolutely has unexamined caste biases; she just never really learnt to recognise them because caste played such a minimal role in the Resistance- but most Bajorans are far more aware of caste dynamics than she typically is (I just do not buy that the D'jarra system completely went away in less than 60 years)
one character i love seeing them interact with
Ben Sisko! They have SUCH a fascinating dynamic, it's so complex and sweet and often quite trying and hurtful but still kept afloat on this deep, deep underlying mutual respect. Ben's position as the Emissary makes everything so wonderfully complicated, and watching Kira's frustrations at the fact that she actually believes in him morph into reassurance as he slowly transforms from being the Starfleet Outsider to truly being Of Bajor... ahhh it's so good. That scene where he invites her to a baseball game lives in my head rent free! (Also they high key make a fascinating ship imo, I am something of a post-canon Sisko/Kira/Kasidy truther)
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
I have multiple answers to this (Julian, Worf, Garak, Keiko, Ziyal, Cretak, Jake, Ezri, etc) but I'm gonna go with someone she actually interacts with quite a bit, because I just wanted mOArrr. Jadzia!
Yes, it was the 90s, so I'm glad they were at least allowed to be friends and not like, cattily pitted against each other. But I still craved more layers to their onscreen dynamic! I mean, Jadzia, the Starfleet "Science Officer" who openly dismisses Kira's religious beliefs on more than one occasion? Kira, the child soldier who finds most of Jadzia's pastimes and preoccupations frivolous and silly? It's so interesting that they keep spending time together despite such fundamental differences, and I would've loved a bigger exploration as to why! They deserved their own 'The Wire', basically. Much like the central two characters of that episode, the answer is that they actually have a LOT more in common than is apparent at first glance (fraught senses of identity, complicated relationships with their home worlds, a sense of loss regarding family) where they outwardly seem like polar opposites. And all of this is not even getting into the nonlinearity of Bajoran religion vs the lives of Dax... gosh, there was room for so much! They deserved a whole Big Sequence full of Monologues the actors could really sink their teeth into, they deserved for one of them to fly off on a dangerous quest to save the others' life- and you know what!! They deserved a little homoerotic hand-holding too!! But, I suppose that's what fanfiction is for😂
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
She and Bashir definitely grow much closer after the show's end; whether he stays behind on DS9 or not :)

The reason why when they first meet Slade is going to kill Oliver is because he believes that If Oliver is caught and tortured he’ll give up information about Slade. What’s so interesting about that is that even this early on in Oliver’s journey (mid season 1) that’s not true. We’ve already seen it proved back in 1x05 and we’ll see it over and over again through the next 12 years of Oliver’s life. Oliver doesn’t break. Oliver doesn’t give up information. No matter how he’s tortured. Pretty much everything else that becomes Oliver’s “super powers” is something training and experience gave him, but not that. No one trained him to withstand torture. That iron will is just a part of who Oliver is. In fact, with both Yao Fei and Slade (the first two people to train Oliver) that steel resolve that let’s him keep fighting and withstand torture is exactly what draws them to him and make them believe in him enough to start training him. Actually that trait (though in slightly different forms) is what draws three other mentors to him as well: Anatoly, Talia and Ra’s.

The Balance of an RA Life
Rheumatoid arthritis is unlike many diseases. RA is a disease that is chronic. It is a disease that is progressive meaning that it will get worse over time. It is debilitating meaning that it will interfere with your ability to have a normal life. There is no cure. It is a tough disease. It may start slowly. It might not even be symmetrical right out of the gate. Or it might be like mine. Acute.…

Be at peace with everything
You say you want to become free. You say you wish to awaken, become liberated, why does it take so long? Why do I have to go through this life? And go through all the various things that I go through? Take an honest look at yourself. Do you have humility? Do you have compassion? Do you have love? Or do you have anger, fear, hatred? You have to honestly take a good look at your life. See the kind of life you've been living. What are your beliefs? What do you feel about the world, the universe, your self?
You have to reconcile yourself with the universe. Be at peace with every living thing, with every sentient thing. Do not allow your mind to tell you anything. Your mind will always fool you. It will tell you all sorts of stories to make you fear - to make you act in a certain way or make you believe a big catastrophe is going to happen unless this or that happens. The only catastrophe that can come upon you is of your own making. You are the one. Do not let the world show you anything that makes you fear or causes you to react. Rather, begin to act from your own divinity. Know who you are. Always be aware of the Self which is you.
There is absolutely nothing in this whole universe that wants to hurt you. You have absolutely nothing to fear. Then where does the fear come from? Where do all these negative thoughts come from? These bad feelings we have sometimes? They come from misidentification.
This whole world is like a dream. Everything appears so real. We go through different experiences all of our lives and it appears so real. But I tell you, the day will come when you will awaken. And you will realize that you are I-am-that-I-am. You will realize that you are absolute pure awareness. You are the Self. That there never was a time when you were dreaming the mortal dream.
But of course, many of you here still do not believe me. For you feel the experience very strongly. You feel all the things that are happening to you. As long as you feel these things and you do nothing to stop the feeling, the attachment to this earth will become stronger and stronger and stronger. This is why certain people can never be in a class like this. For their ego (their mind) is so strong that after they walk out this door, all of the ugly thoughts come back into their mind - the problems they're having, the things that are going wrong in their life, the things that appear to hurt them, the people who have told them the wrong words. And they become very upset; they begin to feel this world again.
One day you will awaken from this dream and you will laugh. The awakening can come faster or slower* - it depends on you. It is up to you to begin doing something to yourself so that you may awaken from this mortal dream.
So I ask you, "What are doing with your life? How much effort do you put into your spiritual practice?" The more you become involved with the world, the more the world pulls you down. I'm not saying you should give up everything and go and meditate on top of a mountain or in a cave. I am saying continue what you're doing but mentally give up everything. Mentally do not become attached to things by fearing them or loving them or doing anything to them at all. You observe the world and your affairs. You watch what is happening to you.
