We have very recently the premiere of ‘Predator: The Prey,’ a film that focused on the fight for the survival of a Comanche to try to defeat a fearsome creature. Barely a week we have had to wait for ‘Beast’ to arrive in cinemas, an essentially similar proposal. In this case, the fearsome enemy is a lion, and this is a short review of the Beast movie. The film itself with the promise of Idris…

It is once again time for another reviews my brethren, but this time it's a movie that isn't Phantom related - HOWEVER, it's a movie I firmly believe every Phandom Pham should watch! It is called Beauty and the Beast (Panna a netvor originally). It is from 1978 directed by Czech filmmaker, Juraj Herz.
Tumblr media
It's a grimy, foggier retelling of the classic tale except in this one our Beast is a bird-man called Netvor. Just like the original story, Julie (this version's Belle) sacrifices her life for her father by going to the Beast's castle. The Beast falls in love with her while trying to hold back his wild, animalistic urges. The reason I think fellow Phantom fans would love this is because it has a similar concept where the male love interest is afraid to show his face/body to the female love interest. I watched the whole film with English subtitles on YouTube (link). Next to The Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast is one of my top favorite stories ever so don't be surprised if you see more of it on my blog every now and then lol (the 1946 version is also amazing). Here's a link to the Letterboxd page as well!

I watched Teen Titans: The Judas Contract (2017) because The Batman (2022) was too long.
7/10
spoilers, obviously. here are my live thoughts:
I THINK ITS A DICKORY MOVIE AND IF IT IS I WILL BE SO HAPPY YOU HAVE NO IDEA
Kory kissed him to learn English- I'm laughing so hard right now this is hilarious.
if i had watched this movie in 2020 i would have realized i was bi a lot sooner
The coloration of the "Five Years Ago" and "Now" text is messing with my designer heart rn
it's the red nightwing outfit!!!!!! i havent got to see that much. i much prefer the blue bc there's already like seven red batfam members but like i do think it looks stylish because its dick and dick pulls off everything
"Nightwing." "Nightwing." "Dick..!" "oh, yeah?"
OH THEY'RE SO CUTEEEEEEEE
"they're different..." trails off. "like kory will tell you." "noo, you go aheaddd..." "I've been studying them for years--"
I ALREADY LOVE THEM "robin stop complimenting the bad guys"
no they did not just got there (at 9:40)
damian is just such a brat i love him
kicking my feet, squealing, giggling, throwing up BECAUSE SHE HAS HIS NINE AND HE HAS HER SIX--
i took a fifteen minute break to do the math on how old dick and kory are and got 36?!??!?!?!
garfield has no rizz
i just got like... punched in the gut seven times??? "i just miss my son"
it's the fact that damian is like "i approve of your gf" and nightwing's like "okay???"
"You don't have to move a mountain to help people, Terra." - Probably the theme of this movie
i was not ready for the sexual jokes
oh no raven is on the groundddd
how stupid is damain?!?!??!?!?!?!! especially after the part that slade says about lazarus pits?! he has to know that there is no way he can feasibly win this! and terra isn't helping! which means that terra is probably working with slade!!! GUESS WHO CALLED IT!!!!!!!!!!!
oh god this slade and terra stuff is no good
please tell me that we were not about to get a dick and kory makeout scene
oh thank god for damian
oh my god imagine going into your surpise party thinking people are about to kill you :skull:
ugh i dont like this garfield selfie timeskip whatever
and hasn't anyone noticed robin isn't here???
im doing os much calculations rn for no reason at all
AWWWWWWWWWWWWW STARFIRE'S GOT SOMETHING TO SAYYYYYYYYYY THEY LOVE EACH OTHER AND THEY JUST WANT THE BEST FOR EACH OTHER I LOVE THEM
aw. beastboy being supportive
"Do you know why I'm an orphan?" "uhhh... your parents died?"
nooo terra and beast boy kissed absolutely not they are not for each other terra doesn't need any relationships periodddd
aww but bb is really cute after so ig it makes it a lil better
slade shut up this is supposed to be a nice moment
i will never get over dick calling kory babe its too precious i love them so much
i dont trust that gift. i dont trust that.
they're making their moveeeeee- they're taking all the titansss oh noooo
i think that leaves nightwing as the last survivor which is really nerve wracking because i love dick grayson so much??
gar youre so stupid
oh no kory i love you kory please be okayyy
dick just got shot in the chest oh my god, oh my god. screaming crying hyperventilating oh my god oh my god oh my god.
oh i shouldve known he'd be just fine htis is why i love him hes so dependable
OH MY GOD HE JUST RE-SET HIS SHOULDER ON A SUPPORT BEAM HOLY MOLY
"What did you do to Robin?" "I beat the crap out of him for being mouthy."
i have the stupidest sense of humor.
guys i love dick grayson so much and he's the only one left and mmmmm im so ready for this i love dick grayson hes my favorite
ohhh huh terra's getting betrayeeddddd (i never liked terra even though she makes sense she just gives me ickies)
eugh i hate slade he just likes to make sexual references to people that he should not be making those references to i know hes like a predator but it just doesnt make me happy
what is this machine even doing? is it draining their blood? you would need some sort of needle or something? ik that brother blood said something about life? is it draining their life force like some kind of dark crystal jim henson type stuff? what's going on with it? their powers? like... if they wanted nightwing then they weren't going for powers, and they did regular humans first anyway? i dont understand.
woah its the titans against a villian with similar powers!!!!!!!! /j
i like this first pairing of kori and jaime and gar and raven against brother blood and damian and dick against slade bc it feels really personal and also fair.
terra was obivously going to save them all there was no doubt in my mind.
and then teamwork and then they win because of course they do
woah she just shot him like three times that was excessive
oh noooo terraaaaa ( im not sad )
DAMIAN GOT A PUPPY EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD IS RIGHT WEONFOIEWFOIBEWOINFOWNEONFEW
"Terra Markov was like a diamond, the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen."
no beast boy dont make me feel for her
i just realized that i think i called "jaime" "hime" for some godforsaken reason i swear to god my ears are stupid.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
final thoughts:
this movie was a bit much for me on sexual innuendos and references, but most of it was plot relevant. i love to see dickory so im good with that. animation was good. characters were good. had to warm up to gar but that's okay.
7/10

There are so many reasons why old Disney movies are much more memorable and funnier than the newer stuff producers today serve us, and this scene of the castle raid from the 1991 version of Beauty and the Beast is one of them.
Scene breakdown beneath the break. Spoilers in effect.
youtube
LeFou grabs Lumière as a light source (candelabra) after the mob crashes the door in with a battering ram
Lumière signals to the other inhabitants to spring their ambush
Furniture begins attacking villagers
Coatrack lays down a rolling jab combo on Blonde Nail-Club-Wielding Guy
Older Sideburns Guy gets tackled by a mop
Bad-Toothed Redhead Guy gets double-teamed by two wardrobes whilst trying to swing at them with an axe, suffering bad dental damage
Balding Pitchfork Guy takes a cooking pot to the head, obscuring his vision while a spoon, tenderizer, and frying pan bang against the pot, potentially causing concussive damage and hearing problems from excessive ringing
Bald Red-Bearded Axe Guy gets knocked over by a chair and rolled up by a carpet which rolls straight into a storage chest… which burps. Shadows in the background show a guy holding a spikeless mace that fights back by knocking against his head
Gaston looks on flabbergasted to see one axe-wielding guy has his eyes covered by a pot only to have a wooden bucket fall on top of his face, whilst a Shovel-Wielding Cook gets struck repeatedly by a rolling pin until he falls over
Meanwhile, Chip uses Maurice’s steam-powered wood-chopping machine to cut through the cellar doors where Gaston kept Maurice and Belle locked away to keep them from alerting the Beast
Back to the castle violence, a Wilhelm scream happens as windows shatter, people go flying, a shadow of a guillotine dropping its blade can be seen, and Shovel-Wielding Cook from before gets pelted by tomatoes thrown by beer steins, where he then gets doused in hot tea by Mrs Potts and six other teacups
Panning out to general chaos, Madam Armoire jumps from the second floor while singing a high note and lands on Redhead Bearded Farmer who was busy chasing a coffee table
Cutaway briefly to Gaston hunting for Beast in the castle’s upper floors
Madam Armoire knocks out Bucktoothed Hammer Guy then Club-Wielding Short Guy in two swift motions while Redhead Bearded Farmer remains unconscious next to them
Older Pitchfork Tricorne Guy tries to ambush Madam Armoire while her back is turned, only to get parried with help from a brush and comb. He then gets pulled straight into the armoire, then thrown out wearing a completely different outfit, where he screams in fright as he realizes what he’s wearing
LeFou tries to burn Lumière with a torch, but Cogsworth- wearing a blue bicorne hat similar to the one Napoleon wore- brandishes a pair of scissors and a pistol before ditching said pistol to slide down the banister and painfully lance LeFou in the bum with his scissors
Cutaway to Stout Tricorne Guy yanking feathers out of Featherduster, where Lumière then burns his bum with candle fire and catches Featherduster mid-fall
LeFou, now flanked by Saber-Wielding Tricorne Guy and Big Bearded Axe-Wielding Guy, begin chasing Sultan through the foyer into the kitchen
Once in the unlit kitchen, Chef Bouche- a large stove- and a large collection of knives chase the three of them out of the castle with the rest of the still-conscious mob, leaving any unconscious casualties behind
The casualties? Several people left behind unconscious, but potentially many more unconscious offscreen if you saw the manpower of the mob as they marched to the castle. At least one thoroughly humiliated.
during the castle front flyover with the Wilhelm scream, the shadow showing a dropping guillotine could also suggest at least one death, although this is left uncertain for obvious reasons (though the use of shadows in older works has been used to considerably effective- and sometimes chilling- effect in other older works like the final fight scene in Tarzan). beyond this, the only known death in this part of the movie is Gaston, who falls off the roof and into the awaiting canyon where gravity does him in
TLDR? animated movies today- Disney or not- can’t recreate the silly cartoonish violence from these fight scenes back then, no matter how much CGI they use. and that doesn’t even mention the growing list of things producers are discouraged from adding to today’s movies that were commonplace in scenes and movies like these

I have recently Watched Sea Beast, Bad Guys and Nimona, which I’ve all seen raced about in a similar manner, and now here are my opinions!
The Bad Guys
Hilarious
I loved Wolf. I don’t know how but that feeling of wanting to do good but struggling with the change (really just any ‘charecter change’)
The animation
The characters
All just where wonderful and dynamic
I do wish we got a why some Animals were Animorphic and others wherent. I know it’s a kids movie but even just a quick shot or toss away line but that bothered me /lh
Gender envy
Brings out the furry in me (idk how to explain but after watching animal movies as kids I’d act like that animal I didn’t this time but you get the idea)
Sea beast
I get the idea, and it’s a good message but I didn’t like it, enough said
Nimona
Screaming crying throwing up
I don’t get some of the messaging I think and there was to much unknown for me and so parts of it I didn’t really like
Nimona is amazing and it’s a hundred times funnier when you realize she’s like over 1000 years old
Gender envy
Shapeshifters are the best
I like how parts of it feel like a home video movie clipped together
Which Nimona and Bal lost/got captured before they one and had a heart to heart
Overall very good

crying screaming hitting the wall begging y'all to watch netlix's the sea beast(2022) that just came out bc!! the diversity(both in color, culture, and gender)!! the animation!! the character/world design!! the plot & overall moral lesson abt how the stories we're told shape us!! that ppl in places of power use this to maintain their influence & we have to continually question what we know bc we could be perpetuating cycles of violence!! breaking generational trauma with a hefty serving of found family!!

Transformers Rise Of The Autobots
Subtitle: My new favourite transformer
Tumblr media
This movie contains slight cussing and suggestive jokes. Parental guidance may be advised but I don't think it's necessary.
******************************************************************
Now I want to start off by saying that to me this is not the best transformers in terms of action. But it does contain a decent amount of action.
That being said, this is one of my favourite transformers in existence. This movie's concept is a bit different from the others. The main plot of the movie is that the cybatronian war took place and Optimus orders that the Autobots regroup on earth. This has caused the Autobots to become stranded on the planet for the last 7 years. Now out of nowhere, a strange stone(forgot the name) that acts like a key to open portals anywhere in the universe appears. The Autobots see this as their only way of going home and they try to acquire the key from the museum with the help of a human named Noah.
The name of the enemies in this movie is not the Decepticons but rather The Terrorcons who serve Unicron and are trying to acquire the key so that it may aid Unicron in the consumption of more worlds.
Now as interesting as that sounds, I wouldn't really hype this movie in terms of action. Why I say this because I am a huge Optimus enthusiast and in this movie, Optimus is easily beaten and is cold towards humans. Sure the movie has an explanation for it but I don't really enjoy the way he was thrown around. That being said his attitude as well wasn't likeable. His design in the movie is also different from Bayverse much to my dislike.
I prefer the Bayverse designs of Optimus and bumble bee because of the details that go into their designs. In this movie, Optimus wasn't my type of character at all and it sort of made me upset. But the creators of the movie revived my heart with Mirage.
Mirage has to be one of the best characters that Transformers has ever created and is one of the main reasons I watched the movie. he has this sense of comedy that speaks out to me and was more of the comic relief of the movie. He easily became likeable and was more of the star of the movie than the other Autobots and topped even Noah in terms of likability according to me.
After being bombarded with Mirage edits on TikTok, I decided to watch the movie! I personally enjoyed the movie because it was a balance of comedy and action. I would also recommend this movie to my friends and family as well as strangers on the internet who love to laugh as well as watch good fight scenes.
The soundtrack as well was top-tier for music lovers. I would rate this movie a 7/10 for you guys but a 9/10 personally because I would definitely watch it again.

the Sea Beast (no spoilers)
Okay, so thank you Netflix for diversity and being willing to throw money at all kinds of strange ideas to see them made.  Kudos for you and that’s why you get my money and Disney+ doesn’t.
So Sea Beast.
Tumblr media
I’m going to start off by saying I really enjoyed it.  The world building is super amazing and the design of both the world, the ships and the people is SO far above what I’m used to seeing from CG animation.  These designers went to TOWN on creating their human characters!  There’s amazing diversity in almost every angle of the ship’s crew and you can just tell that every single character on the ship has a whole ass story going on with them that we’re not being told.  There’s a real attention to detail with how people that hunt sea monsters would dress, what their prosthetics would look like, what kinds of varied body builds they’d have.  The first mate alone - phenomenal!   And it caries over into their interactions as well.  There are different personalities all working with the other personalities to keep the ship going and the crew really cares about each other - there’s a scene toward the end where two of them bolt for the Jacob to save him and its automatic and small and beautiful.  Good stuff and you really feel like they’re a family.
Second - oh my WORD!  Someone REALLY did their research and put some thought into how hunting sea monsters would go.  I spent a lot of my summers on Nantucket Island which, once upon a time, had been the whaling capital for the world and there was so much in this movie that just rang true on small detail levels for me.  Hell, they even put in a version of a Nantucket sleigh ride!  But they mixed it up too, because these aren’t whales, they’re city sized monsters of the deep and hunting them would be entirely different in some ways.  The mesh of ‘old’ and ‘new’ ideas for this really was probably my favorite part of the world building.  Just so top notch, someone really put some THOUGHT into this.  Also the touch with the sea gulls was awesome!
Tumblr media
As for visual beauty, absolutely.  This movie KNOWS what its doing when it hits you with underwater scenes or monster attacks or overhead visuals.  Its beautiful and often properly ‘horrors of the deep’ terrifying and even, at least once, deeply sadly quiet.  The overhead view of the capital city is dramatic and tells a story all its own.  In fact, there are so many little details in here that tell you there are layers and layers of stories waiting to be discovered.
Which is why I found the actual story a little disappointing.  Don’t get wrong, its not a bad story.  In fact, its a very predictable story and it, for the most part, carries itself along without any real bumps until close to the end.   You know, the second you’re introduced to the precocious child exactly how her story is going to go - and you know, pretty much, how Jacob’s is going to go as well once he gets introduced to the precocious child.  Even the ‘twist’ of the story isn’t really a twist at all if you’re even the slightest bit familiar with children’s movies.  Its a route story that’s set in a very clever new setting and the clever new setting really is the strength of the story and carries it for the most part.
The sea monsters also felt very - route.  The first two have a lot of promise.  In fact, the very first one we see at the very opening (which I haven’t found a picture of) is the most fascinating and then the quality of the sea monster just seems to go blander and blander as we go.  The main sea monster is so bland that, if it were colored properly for its water environment it would have been entirely unnoticeable.  The amazing detail work on the rendering of the humans and the ship in fact make the main sea monster look even - cheaper?  It’s not a deal breaker but in a world with the kind of detail that puts beads in the first mate’s hair and badges on the main pillar in the captain’s office I was hoping for some serious kid-friendly nightmare fuel for the sea monsters.   There was a crab monster at one point but even then - eh.  I stand by my assessment that the very first sea monster we see is the best.
Tumblr media
Still, the story’s a very solid story to me up until the last act.  I’m not a big fan of ‘kid that shakes things up and is right’ but it worked for this and Maisie was pretty cute (and beautifully done - like the animation of her hair was WOW!).  Things got a bit shaky when they introduced the ‘sea witch’ that was a knock off Into the Spiderverse Dr. Ock but I’ve got no complaints about how they built up to her introduction with the crew voicing what a Bad Idea this was even before we got to her island with the kind of delicious foreshadowing I love in stories.  You could really feel the crew bracing up to end up another Flying Dutchman.  And the ‘witch’s’ ‘gift’ really was properly terrifying (and familiar) looking.  Except her price was never collected, even if it was built up to be something terrible.  Yes, in a way what she warned was the price did come true but it wasn’t so much a cause of dealing with her and more a cause of a personality who would have done what they did anyway.  So the ‘cursed crew’ vibes never paid out and while I’m happy for the crew and it wouldn’t have fit in the story, the build up was still there.
The other villains, the king and queen, were paper thin villains.  Granted that worked out fine for the first two-thirds of the show, you only needed them to be arrogant and greedy.  But one of the main reveals that popped up at the very end really fell flat because - why?  The ‘why’ part was never really answered.  Okay, so Maisie figured something out and brought it to light and everyone went ‘Ooo!’ (and it was probably a good lesson to give kids about paying attention to where their sources of intel are coming from).  But - for all the build up, we never found out why it had been done in the first place.  We can guess but the villains looked as shocked as everyone else and there was no moment of ‘and I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for you pesky kid’.
Likewise the whole ‘and our heroes lived happily ever after’ ending seemed pretty flat as well.  It probably works great for kids and we did get Maisie and Jacob ending up in their found family so that was nice but - that’s it?  You instigated their huge structural shake up of the system and - that’s it?  Absolutely no hint of all the repercussions the watcher knows have to have happened after that kind of conclusion.  We’re just gonna - sit on a dock and pretend that’s life now?  Huge discoveries were made about the sea monsters and the government and basically the core structure of at least the ocean going part of this world and - nothing?  And that’s not even bringing up the fact that neither Maisie nor Jacob seem the type to be content to just futz the rest of their life away on a dock somewhere.  For a show about ships going out into the deep waters to hunt monsters and honestly a whole mess of really great ‘morals’ the story brought up and pointed out and used to make kids watching it think - the ending just felt - bleh.
That said - would I recommend watching the show?
Absolutely!  It’s only two hours long and it is visually beautiful.  The voice-acting is all top notch.  The characters are all interesting.  The story is pretty solid if comfortable most of the way through.  The emotional atmosphere when the movie brings it on is tight and rich.  And the world building is delicious and deserves an adult TV series of short stories set in it or at very least a lot of fanfiction set in that world.  All in all, good ride, great visual depth, decent story, soft ending, delicious world building.  Good way to spend two hours and get all the writing cogs in your head going with ideas.

Watched “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” today
It’s ok.
Something about the writing feels like it was intended for little children. Like, the way the human characters explain stuff or the fact that the arc of Optimus Prime is learning how to work as part of a team.
Kids will probably like it, older viewers may find it a bit too simple.
And I kind of miss the heart from Bumblebee (2018).
At least the movie keeps the less complicated designs and transformations for the robots from the 2018 movie.
Not sure if is worth the trip to the movies.
The movie’s ending promises a future crossover with another franchise, and there is a brief scene during the credits.

X-Men: First Class (2011) Review
potential spoilers ahead...
As the fifth movie in the X-Men series, this does the impressive job of Not being about Wolverine. This film shows the origin of the X-Men team as we come to know in the first movie(X-Men). However, it only brings back 4 of the known characters from this point in the series. Which, for a team story structure, is not as many as you would think.
The first act of the film is spent on various characters, both new and old, and their backstories. As the story moves along, the team grows to resemble more of what we know it eventually becomes. The final fight shows most of these new characters dying. The very end of the movie solidifies the future plans for what the X-Men will become.
This film is stuffed full of origins and backstories that would have done better if the audience had any reason to actually care. The stories we get are interesting but only cover the surface problems. The attention is mostly focused on Eric, aka Magneto, with his origin being the opening sequence and with the movie revisiting his life story more than anyone else's. The main conflict being a personal motivator for Eric, while everyone else is there for the "greater good" reasoning, makes the film feel more like X-Men Origins: Magneto, with the sub-plot being about the X-Men team instead of actually showing these characters in more depth. Choosing to focus on one character and not the entire team, seems to be something this franchise regularly struggles with, something I talk about more in my X-Men Origins: Wolverine review.

📽️ Beauty and the Beast (2017)
I was sure I had reviewed this movie before, but I guess not. I’m really surprised, though, because I’ve seen this a few times now. I honestly didn’t like it very much the first time I watched it. I even struggled to stay awake in the theater. I think the more I watch it, the more I like it. It’s definitely not my favorite Disney movie or even my favorite live action remake. The first time I watched it, I felt that they lengthened everything unnecessarily and added parts that just made the movie longer. I still feel that way about some parts, but I think I don’t mind as much because it’s more familiar to me now. I’ve gotten used to it. There are some cringey parts, too (i.e., the growl), but overall it’s not a horrible version of the story. I still prefer the original, though.
Sex/nudity: 1/10 (kissing)
Language: 1/10 (mild French exclamations)
Violence: 3/10 (fighting, shooting, some blood shown, one death shown on screen)
Overall rating: 7/10

Beast movie version
Yes, there are spoilers. The basic plot has been published in 3 other forms already, so not much is surprising.
Go in expecting a lower budget kung-fu movie pand it'll be less of a shock.
Major flaws:
Stage actors who aren't used to movie style super close-ups. Expressions and movement are too exaggerated for movie or tv, but right for medium sized theater live stage performance.
Some of the wigs & costumes have the same flaw of not being meant for close-up view.
Weird and jarring cameos from the larger BSD universe that change the Beast story if you make the mistake of thinking about them instead of treating them as popcorn movie fodder.
Some odd shooting mistakes (camera angles off) during face close ups. Bad place to have the camera set too low or too high unless it's for dramatic reasons (and would be more pronounced than "set a few cm too low")
Special effects for the white tiger and Demon Snow are bad. Like, many people I know can do better on their laptop. No money for an animator? Really?
On the other hand:
Actors for Aktugawa and Atsushi not only look right, they're very skilled as choreography partners. Some of the fight moves are more like dancing at top speed.
Kyouka's also a skilled stage fighter.
Actor for Chuuya looks awesome, for the tiny bits he's in the movie.
Sp fx for Shibusawa and most of Rashomon are very good (the "silver torrent" was enh). But the dragon and wolf heads rocked.
The drop off the top of the building nicely duplicates the anime season 1 opening.
Stick around for post credits. Atsushi, Chuuya and Fyodor all have bits.

Serial X-Men '97

The Beast (La Bête, dir. Bertrand Bonello).
[Léa] Seydoux's steely coldness livens her intriguing character's sense of romantic intrigue. Told across centuries through impeccable production and costume design, how The Beast reincarnates its twisty but sweeping relationship odyssey through genre exercises feels often mesmerizing in its rejection of an A.I.-dominated future.
Screening at The Cinematheque until May 1.
