Ruins of Alph Ho-Oh replica
I was yet again approached by one of my friends to create something from Pokémon, namely the Ho-Oh puzzle from the Ruins of Alph from Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal. I did such a good job with my previous Pokémon creations that they felt compelled to have something too. This time I was compensated fairly.
I used a screen shot from the Game Boy Color game, traced it in Adobe Illustrator. Instead of trying an exact copy I tried to imitate a look of a ragged outline that resembles the pixelated look without being too on the nose.
Then the file needed to be converted into a SVG in Inkscape (because of some wonkyness importing it into Autodesk Fusion 360), and then imported it into Autodesk Fusion 360, where I extruded the areas into a 3D-printable giant cookie cutter model. With that giant cookie cutter printed out I put that immediately into action and stamped an equally-sized slab of polymer clay (about 15cm x 15cm) and textured it with a balled-up piece of aluminium foil. After 30 minutes of baking and a little bit of cool-off time the most arduous part began with the painting process. It took me about 6 hours of carefully building up (and messing up) the paint job with the crappy acrylic paint that won't get used up fast enough. I messed it up a few times trying some color experiments and using my miniature painting washes. The last part was that gave me the most head ache as they are hard to fix when applied. Washing or rubbing it off meant that the crappy acrylic paint would also be removed. I felt stuck at some point using the wash as it made the surface too glossy and the brown darkened a ton. I was disheartened for a bit but rolled with that mistake. All I wanted was to have some minor darker variations. The majority of the time painting on it was to create a more coherent look by switching between dry brushing and applying very thinned layers of more washes. I got to a point that made me happy again with the outcome (also a little bit of sleep helped too).
For the photo I used my Canon EOS 350D (Canon EOS Rebel XT), for which I needed to buy a new battery. The old battery couldn't hold a charge. Next to my house there is a big patch of moss I find quite appealing to look at and I thought it would complement the golden-brown paint job very well. I propped it up with a small box so the whole thing wouldn't sink completely into the squishy moss bed.

The radio broadcast never ends. It just goes on, and on... and on...
I can... hear someone... people. People discussing it. Did I find my way... here? The Ruins of Alph Research Center... I think I did. They left a microphone on. I hear them. ...Confusion?
The radio broadcast doesn't end. I don't know if they know.

After I released my Pokémon Lost Silver 3d remake, I discovered that were more parts to the story. The author of the fangame I took inspiration from released a new version that included those parts. So, back to mapping :D I'm currently working on the third secret part, nicknamed "DiedHe", after greatly improving the "Hidden" part and adding the brand new "Burned" part. Here's some screenshots of new content!

Been swamped with work, mix it with preparations to move house and lack of energy and that meant I just wasn't drawing anything, but today, I felt like just doing my own thing.
Tumblr media
So I did.
I kinda just drew a building from Alph and it went from there, with stuff gradually being added, once I did the frame to fit the letters, I realised I had a blank space, so I drew an Arceus shrine like the one in Jubilife village with a little Chikorita looking up at in front, don't know how clear that is, but eh.

I used the card to get the general idea of the building, the screenshot I found online to do the shrine, and the Chikorita to get a general idea of the shape.

It’s Pokémon Theory time
Lately I pondered about the mysterious Pokémon that is Unown and had some ideas about it that I haven’t read anywhere else.
First of all, and this is nothing new, there’s obviously some connection between Unown, the Creation trio and Arceus. This is made obvious by their association in the Anime and in every core series game they appeared in since Diamond and Pearl. It seems that the ancient people of Jotho and Sinnoh used them as writing, which is mostly found in ancient temples dedicated to Arceus and the Creation trio. The most obvious connection is the Sinjoh ruins event in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Tumblr media
So one thing that has always bugged me is the depiction of Kabuto, Omanyte, Aerodactyl and Ho-Oh in the Ruins of Alph. Ho-Oh makes sense, like the Creation trio in Sinnoh, it was revered as a deity by the people of Jotho, so they depicted it in their temples. But why the fossil mons? From a Doylist standpoint this obviously comes from Pokémons long-running association between old human ruins and fossil Pokémon, with both being something ancient. But from a Watsonian perspective, it made no sense to me. Those Pokémon would’ve been extinct long before humans appeared and started to worship Legendary Pokémon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But now I think that those people really encountered those extinct Pokémon. Like Shieldon and Cranidos in Pokémon Legends Arceus, they might have appeared in space time distortions caused by either the Icognito or the Creation trio. This made the people see them only in relation to their sacred Pokémon, which is also why they depicted them in the Ruins of Alph.
Tumblr media
As for the Rhydon statues found in the ruins, I’m not sure why they chose to depict this Pokémon so much, but I guess this is more of a reverance for a commonplace Pokémon that was seen as powerful and treated with respect because it was dangerous.
Tumblr media
Another thing I noticed was the relationship between two different ancient writing systems in the Pokémon world, Unown and Braille. We encounter Unown in Jotho and Sinnoh/Hisui, which have closely related cultures, and also on Seven Island within the Tanoby ruins. But on Six Island, whithin the Dotted Hole, and also in Hoenn, we find Braille. This would imply that this was the writing system of another culture, but both overlapped on the Sevii Islands and in Sinnoh, where the legendary Titans are also present. As far as I remember, Sinnoh, Galar and Unova don’t feature Braille writing, though, even while the Titans can be encountered there. I’m not really sure what to make of that.

Pokemon Ruins of Alph Theory
If you get enough unown together they harmonize and change reality. Long ago the human tribes in Johto realized this, and they feared the unown destroying their world (they wouldn't, but they could, so human logic). The Johto people decided to solve this by setting the world in stone. So they created a great temple in the desert where they learned to mimic the shapes of the unown, and carved into the temple what the world should be like, believing the unown would be drawn to the likeness they carved and mimic it, setting the world in the pattern they carved.
Their idea worked, in a way The sentences of unown alphabet set in stone gave a new format for the unown to set within and reflect possibilities. The unown were indeed drawn to the Temple of Alph, mingling with the carved lettering and resonating with it until it was impossible to tell if it was just a carving, or the potential of a world. From there the Temple of Alph became a Resonant Point, one of the places in the world that runs a little thin, where multiple possibilities may exist at the same time, and you may travel to other dimensions .
Over centuries of course, the temple fell into the ruins we now know. There are plenty of stories about it, but the truth is forgotten, and many of the stories contradict thanks to multiple possibilities, even conflicting ones, able to be real there. So people know that ancient humans built the ruins, and that they are precious. People know that the unown tend to flock heavily around there. People say strange things happen there.
 But the history is lost
