The cabin sat at the edge of the lake, surrounded by bright green trees and singing birds. The wood was old and creaky and moss was begging to grow from the roof- but you still considered it to be your second home.
Really, everything about it was perfect! The lake and the short drive to the bustling town on the outskirts of Michigan- being able to spend uninterrupted time with your family... it was just perfect.
Except for one tiny detail.
Sam Winchester.
The Winchesters were apparently long-time family friends, and so they accompanied you every summer. Really, you liked them, Mary and John Winchester had always been kind to you and treated you like their own. Dean Winchester had become nothing short but a friend to you, and someone you enjoyed spending time with.
But Sam... he knew how to push your buttons, and he made sure to do it whatever chance he got.
Your mutual hatred didn't really start until the summer you turned six, when Sam had suddenly decided girls had cooties and therefore you were not allowed to play with him.
"Get away!" Sam yells, he sticks his tongue out at you and continues to run through the bustling forest. He nearly smacks into a tree, but is able to narrowly dodge it.
"Stop being so mean!" You cry out, chasing behind him. Eventually, you both reach the lake. You nearly trip on the yellow sand as he runs up the dock, but eventually you are able to catch up with him.
Sam realizes he's cornered as he glances at the water on either side of him. He swallows and looks at you, your hair styled in two messy braids at your shoulders.
"I don't have cooties!" You yell. Sam crosses his arms over his chest, "Yes, you do. You're a girl, and girls have cooties." He retorts sassily.
You ball your tiny hands into fists at your side, "Oh, yeah? Well girls are smarter than boys anyway! And I don't wanna be friends with a smelly boy!"
Sam's eyes go wide, "I'm not smelly!"
"Are too!"
"Am not!"
"Are too!"
"Am not!"
"What're you two yellin' about over 'ere?" Dean, Sam's older brother, asks you two. You aren't sure just when he had joined the two of you, but you don't really care.
"She said i'm smelly!" Sam cries, running past you to the comfort of his older brother. Dean huffs out a laugh as you stutter out an excuse. "Boys are smelly sammy, it's just how the world works." He says.
Sam's jaw drops as he watches your face morph into an approving smile.
"But, that doesn't mean girls don't smell either." Dean says cheekily. Your face drops immediately, and sam smiles from ear to ear as he sticks his tongue out at you.
Dean grabs Sam's tiny hand in one hand and yours in the other, effectively dragging the both of you back into the house to get cleaned up for dinner. You and Sam spend the whole walk making faces at each other behind Deans back.
Tumblr media
The summer you turned eight you had effectively grown taller then Sam, and you used it to your every advantage.
"Give it back!" Sam huffed out, reaching for his half eaten granola bar that you held just out of his reach.
"Nope!" You laughed. Sam grit his teeth as he backed away from you. You, thinking he had finally given up, effectively drop your hand and take a bite out of the bar.
Sam's vision practically goes red as he charges at you. The both of you fall to the floor, the granola bar long forgotten as it tumbles to the ground somewhere.
The two of you begin to scuffle. Sam pulls your hair and you smack at his lanky arms, the both of you cursing each other out with the worst insults you could think of. "You're such a poop head!" Sam grunted.
You finally manage to push him off of you, and out of breath you retort, "Well you're a booty hole!" Sam rolls his eyes and stalks off, and you rub at the skin where Sam had pinched you just a little too hard.
That night, dinner was tense. At least, it was between the two of you. Your parents were getting along fine and Dean was silently enjoying his food.
But you and Sam continued to stare daggers at each other. To an eight year old you, Sam was practically the devil reincarnated.
You finally break eye contact with the brunette boy and pick up your fork to begin to eat some peas off your plate, but you're interrupted by something smacking your forehead.
You look down to your lap where the weapon had fallen, and are met with a tiny green ball. You grit your teeth and throw it right back at Sam, ultimately starting an all out food fight.
Sam throws it back at you, and in retaliation, you throw a piece of your chicken. Your parents hadn't noticed yet, but you can see an amused looking Dean watching the two of out of the corner of your eye.
You and Sam continue to throw food at eachother, until eventually one of you stands and begins to grab handfuls. Suddenly, your innocent food fight turned into a full fledged war.
"Sam!" Mary yells out.
Your father comes up behind you and lifts you away as Sam's father does the same to him. The two of you attempt to fight your parents off of you, but their grip is to strong.
Tumblr media
The summer you turned ten, you and Sam were at the same height. Dean was fourteen, and thus had discovered the concept of girls.
He would bring around a curly-haired girl from town named Dina, and you and Sam made it your life mission to be her favorite.
"Hi Dina!" You yelled out from the lake where you and Sam were swimming. (With your parents watching of course, they didn't quite trust the two of you not to drown each other yet.)
"Hey Y/N, hey Sam! Hope the two of you don't mind if I join you." She smiled as Dean trailed behind her. They set their towels down on the sand and carefully tiptoed their way into the warm, misty water.
You and Sam raced towards her, both determined to reach her first. Sam noticed you gaining on him, and grabbed your shoulders to dunk you under the water. You came up with a gasp, your hair sticking to your forehead. Sam snorted as he swam next to a concerned Dina.
"Are you okay, Y/N?" She asked. You plastered on a smile and nodded, "I'm perfect!" You exclaimed, pushing the hair away from your eyes.
Quickly you swam over to them, happy to see Dina scolding Sam about being too rough with you. Sam took the scolding half-heartily, he'd been hearing it from his parents practically his whole life.
"Yeah, Sam, don't be so mean to me you Dingus." You said with faux sadness, a frown plastered on your face. But Sam could see right through your little game.
"Well, Dina, I only do it 'cause...” He lets out a dramatic sniffle, “She makes fun of me." He sighs out sadly. You scoff, "I only do it because you do it!"
Sam furrows his eyebrows and shakes his head, "No I don't!"
"Yes you do!"
The two of you continued to bicker back and forth, and Dina whispered quietly to Dean, "Are they always like this?" She asked, confused. Dean shrugged, "Pretty much, yeah."
Tumblr media
Once you were fourteen your parents started to let you go into town by yourselves, as long as you promised to stay together.
Sam had grown way taller then you at this point, practically towering over you. He was still a little bit lanky though, and his hair had grown to an awkward length.
The both of you walked silently into the town. Usually, Dean would come with you to break the tension, but he was apparently busy with some date today.
"I wanna go to the mall." You say. Sam rolls his eyes, "No. I wanna go to the arcade." He argues. You drop your hands at your sides and glare at him, a frown growing onto your face. "We went to the arcade yesterday."
Sam shrugs, "Well I wanna go again." He says nonchalantly, beginning to walk to the direction of the gaming center.
You quickly walk in front of him, effectively blocking his path, "We agreed that we would do something you wanted one day, and then something I wanted the next." You huff, "Well it's my turn to pick, and I say we go to the mall." Sam throws his head back in annoyance, "Fine." He groans.
You smile cheekily and practically skip your way to the shopping center. Your mother had given you twenty dollars to buy your self something nice, and you were determined to use it wisely.
Sam followed you around like a lost puppy, occasionally looking at some pieces of clothing. "What do you think of this?" You ask him, holding up a flowy baby pink dress against your frame. He shrugs, " 'S nice I guess.." He mumbles.
You roll your eyes, "Well that's not helpful."
The brunette boy turns away from you, attempting to hide his red cheeks. Sam would be a liar if he said he didn't think you were beautiful, but he would rather die then ever tell you that.
"I think i'm gonna get it." You mumble to yourself, and Sam hums in acknowledgment as you walk up to the cashier. The lady happily takes your dress and makes small talk with you, but Sam doesn't listen. Instead, he find himself staring at your side profile.
Over the years Sam has learned every line and curve of your face, even if he hadn't noticed he was doing it. When you buy the dress, Sam can see the way the corners of your eyes crinkle just a little bit, indicating to him that you're feeling happy.
"Thank you!" You say gleefully, a kind and warm smile on your face as you grab the bag containing your dress.
The two of you walk home in a familiar silence. Sam glances at you occasionally, and you pretend you don't notice.
Eventually, after he's looked at you for the thousandth time, you furrow your brows and begin to pat at your face. "Do I have something on me? You question clearly annoyed. “Why do you keep looking at me?" You ask.
Sam's cheeks flush at being caught, but he's quick to retort, "I was just trying to see if that was mud on your face or if that's really how you look."
You frown and shoot him a glare, "It's makeup you asshole." You growl. You had just started wearing makeup this summer, and you were already a tad bit insecure about it. Sam's jab just makes you more self conscious.
Sam grimaces, "Why are you wearing that crap?" He questions cautiously. He doesn't want you to think he cares (he does), but he was curious.
You shrug, your lips straightening into a thin line, "Because I wanted to." You say nonchalantly. Sam bites his lip and stuffs his hands in his pockets, "Well... I think you're prettier without it." He mumbles shyly.
Immediately he regrets it- this was uncharted territory that he wasn't quite sure he was ready to cross into just yet.
Your eyes go wide and a light blush coats your neck and cheeks, you smile and your eyes twinkle with something Sam can't register. "Do you really mean that?" You question hopefully.
Sam swallows, "No." He says cheekily, "You look weird either way."
Your face drops and Sam feels a pang in his chest but he chooses to ignore it. Your eyes immediately start to glaze over with an onset of tears, and you push him away from you. Sam hadn't even noticed he'd started drifting so close to you.
"You're a real dick, you know that?" You sniffle, you quickly quicken your pace and walk in front of the boy. "I really hate you." You mumble to yourself, but Sam hears it, and it leaves a strain on his heart.
Later that night, you were in your shared bathroom with the boys wiping your makeup off, a set of fresh tears attempting to roll down your cheeks.
You weren't sure why what Sam said had hurt you so badly. The both of you always said shit like that to each other, so why did you care so much this time?
A knock at the door makes you jump, and you open it cautiously. The last thing you want right now is to deal with Sam. To your relief, the face you're met with is one you'd gladly welcome.
"Hey, Dean." You smile warmly, sniffing away any remaining evidence of your crying. Dean's frowns as he inspects your face, "What happened, Squirt?" He questions.
Your lower lip wobbles as you look at the floor. Him asking you that just makes all the feelings bubble back to the surface. "It's stupid." You mumble.
Dean shakes his head and leans against the doorframe. "It's not stupid if it's makin' you cry."
You bite your lip and shrug, "Sam just said somethin' that hurt my feelings, it doesn't even matter."
Dean frowns, "Want me to beat him up?" He asks seriously. You laugh and shake your head at his antics, "You know I do."
Dean threatening to beat up Sam anytime he was mean to you had become an ongoing joke between the two of you, you'd always reply that, yes, you did want him to beat him up.
"Look," Dean sighs, "You know Sam doesn't actually hate you, right?"
You kissed your teeth. You know Deans only trying to help, but he doesn't understand yours and Sam's dynamic. To everyone else, you are the sweetest people alive. But, you just hated each other- always had- so there was no point in trying to pretend you were secretly in love or something, because you weren't.
You gave Dean a tight-lipped smile and bid him a quick goodnight, wanting nothing more then to forget about the days events and just go to sleep.
Sam on the other hand, couldn't stop thinking about the way your smile had dropped and how your eyes began to fill with oncoming tears. He felt horrible, but he couldn't for the life of him understand why.
It wasn't like this was the first time he'd teased you about the way you looked, you'd even done the same to him! So why was it so different this time?
He sighed and rubbed at his eyes with the heel of his palm. He didn't like how complicated everything was getting.
Tumblr media
By the time the both of you were sixteen and finally able to drive yourself places, you had gone from hating each other, to loathing each other.
You hated the way he licked his lips constantly, or how his nails were always bit to the quick. You hated the way his hair fell just right and how his eyes had beautiful grey flecks in them. Not that you noticed any of those kinds of things.
You twisted the phone line between your freshly painted fingersnails, happy to finally be able to talk to someone who wasn't Sam or Dean.
"You've gotta admit though, Sam’s smoking hot!" Your best friend, Kelly, giggles girlishly. You fake gag, "He so is not! He's a total douche! Besides, even if he was hot, which he's not, I would rather drink acid than date him."
Kelly gives you a sarcastic 'mhm' and gives her best impression of you, "Oh no! My names Y/N and i'm forced to go to my lake house every summer with two super hot brothers! Whatever will I do!"
You roll your eyes, "Yeah, yeah. You know, i'm telling you if you got to know Sam you wouldn't think he was so hot anymore." You say matter-of-factly. Kelly mutters a 'whatever' and quickly changes the subject.
"So how's that guy you've been seeing?" She asks. You squeal, your smile growing wider by the second.
You had met a guy in town just two weeks before. His name was Blake and he had a beautiful beach body along with perfectly tan skin. His hair was blonde and wild and he had the most charming smile.
"He's so nice! He's like- like a dream come true honestly. Did I tell you that he bought me flowers the other day?" You ask excitedly. Kelly shakes her head enthusiastically, though you can't see it. "No! You didn't tell me that!" She gasps, "Oh, he's so totally into you!"
"I know!"
The two of you continue to giggle about your new boyfriend who isn't your boyfriend quite yet. Right now, Blake is the first boy who has ever shown real interest in you, and for a sixteen year old girl, that means the world.
Sam on the other hand, couldn't be less enthusiastic. He's heard rumors about Blake from Dean. Apparently, he liked to screw around.
Against his own better judgement, Sam picks up the landline in his room so he can Eavesdrop on your conversation.
"He's so nice Kelly. And he's taking me out to some fancy restaurant tonight." You giggled. Sam's eyebrows furrowed as he registered the information. "What restaurant is it? Have I heard of it?" She asks.
"It's some place called Bennys or Bevvys or... something like that."
Sam immediately saved the information in his brain. He wasn't going to stalk you per se, this was all just so he could make sure Blake didn't do anything to hurt you. Not that he cared.
The boy continues listening intently to your conversation, hoping to catch any more details about your supposed date tonight. He is throughly disappointed as you and Kelly quickly change the topic to the newest Leonardo Dicaprio movie.
He carefully places the phone back into the wall, and quickly makes his way to Deans room. Dean had turned twenty just this year, but college had tired him out. During the school year his skin had been paler then sam had ever seen it before, and his eye bags all the more prominent. So he was glad to be met with Deans usual boyish glow.
"Hey, you wanna help me with somethin' tonight?" Sam questions. He leans against the door frame and watches as Dean drops the dumbbell he had been curling onto the ground. "What with?" Dean questions.
Sam smiles mischievously, "Help me ruin Y/N's date."
Dean immediately refuses, but Sam had prepared for that. He shook his head as Dean began to rant about how stupid your guys rivalry was. "She's going with Blake Thompson." He interrupts.
Dean immediately goes silent, takes a breath, then says, "Let me change my clothes."
The brothers silently ride in Deans pride and joy, his 1967 Chevy Impala he had named 'Baby'. You had suggested the name after you and the mothers had finished another rerun of 'Dirty Dancing', and Dean not knowing any better, took the name in stride.
They were both dressed in suits, attempting to look the part of two rich guys going out for a causal dinner at the most expensive restaurant in town.
"So, do you even know where we're supposed to be going?" Dean questions, "Or are we just gonna drive around and hope we find them?" Sam glares at Dean and purses his lips,  "They're going to Benny's."
Dean whistles, his eyes widening slightly, "Man, I knew that shit head was filthy rich." He laughs out. Sam rolls his eyes and rests his head against the window.
Dean glances at the boy out of the corner of his eye, his hands drumming against the wheel in a smooth rhythm. "So..." He says cautiously, "You like Y/N?"
Sam practically shoots up out of his seat, his eyes wide and jaw hung open. "No!" He insists, "I hate her."
Dean nods dramatically, "I forgot you look out for people you hate, that was my bad." He says sarcastically.
Sam crosses his arms over his chest, turning his head to stare out the window. "I'm not- looking out for her-" He swallows, "I'm just... just-" He stammers, wracking his brain for an excuse.
Was he looking out for you? Why would he even want to do that in the first place? He hates you.
Right?
Dean sighs and purses his lips, his hands stop their movements and instead opt to grip the wheel steadily. "Sam, you have to admit that maybe somewhere along the way of you guys pretending to hate each other, you started to maybe... sorta... like her."
Sam goes silent at that. He leans against the seat, his fingers picking at the skin around his fingernails, a nervous habit.
He didn't like you. At all. He hated how competitive you got on family game nights. He hated how you pursued your lips when you really focused on something. He hated the stupid freckles and moles that dotted your body. He hated how hot he felt when you'd accidentally brush up against him. He hated you.
He fucking hated you.
Sam doesn't even notice when the car stops, the bright neon sign indicating they’d arrived at the restaurant lighting up the cars interior. "So, what's the plan?" Dean asks. Sam shrugs, he hadn't really thought that far.
"I mean... I don't know." He mumbles. He was starting to regret this. This date wasn't any of his business, and he had no real reason to even be there.
Dean scoffs and throws his head against the seat, "You don't know?" He asks unbelievably. Sam bites his lip, wracking his brain for any idea on how to do this without hurting you. Not that he cared, obviously.
Finally, he settles his mind on a perfect plan. He opens the door and signals for Dean to do the same. As he and Dean walk into the restaurant, he explains his idea. Dean considers it for a moment, but ultimately decides it's the best idea they've got.
The boys walk in as casually as possible, doing their best to make it seem like they belong there. Sam immediately searches the premise for you, and he finally spots you right as the hostess approaches them.
Dean flirts with the girl, giving Sam enough time to sneak off under the premise of 'going to the bathroom.'
He eyes a smiling and blushing you sitting in the corner of the restaurant. You're playing with your straw, a nervous habit you'd had since you were young. Blake's face on the other hand, shows no emotion other then lust. How you hadn't realized this guy just wanted to get in your pants, Sam wasn't sure of.
He quickly approached your table and scoots in next to you. You jump at first, your eyes widening. Sam just smiles at a confused Blake and a fuming you.
"What the hell are you doing here?" You asked angrily. Sam furrowed his eyes brows and leaned his elbows against the table. He gives you a questioning look, "What does it look like i'm doing?" He asks innocently.
"It looks like you're trying to pull an asshole move, and i'd really appreciate it if you would leave." You seethe. Blake clears his throat, and immediately the both of you snap your heads towards him.
"Um, Who's this?" He asks, a disgusted look on his face.
"No one-"
"A friend-"
The both of you immediately glance at each other. You smile nervously and shake your head, "It doesn't matter, he was just leaving." You mutter, attempting to push Sam out of the seat, but he doesn't budge.
"So, Blake," He says with faux cheerfulness, "How's Katherine?"
Blake's eyes go wide at that and the color drains from his face. Your eyebrows furrow, eyes darting across Blake's face. "Who's Katherine?" You ask.
Blake stumbles over his words, attempting to come up with an excuse, but Sam beats him to it. "Oh you didn't know?" He asks. "Katherine's his girlfriend! She's visiting her grandparents right now though. She should be getting back next week, right Blake?" Sam asks innocently.
Blake hangs his head in shame and mumbles out a "Yes." Your jaw is hanging open by this point, hurt filling your features.
"Oh." You swallow, a dam of tears threatening to spill from your eyes. "I- I think I should get going." You say shakily. Sam quickly stands from the booth, allowing you to exit.
"Really great to see you, Blake. Let's catch up soon, yeah?" Sam says, his smile straining. Blake doesn't respond, instead he opts to glare daggers at Sam instead. Sam shrugs him off and follows behind you as you practically run out of the restaurant.
Dean is waiting in the car for the two of you, concern filling his features as he watches you exit. Sam follows closely behind you, he gives Dean a look that says 'don't be a dick.'
You quickly hop into your rightful place in the backseat, slamming the door shut. Dean doesn't scold you for it like he normally does, but instead gives you a tight lipped smile.
The car ride back to the house is filled with silence along with the occasional sniffle or two from you. Sam and Dean glance at each other every now and then, neither of them knowing just how to comfort you, or if you even want comforting.
When you arrive to the house you're quick to run around the back, and Sam immediately knows where you're going. Sam debates going after you, but eventually settles against it. The last person you want to be comforted by is him, right?
He begins walking up the stairs into the house, but Dean grabs his arm and stops him. "Where the hell are you goin'?"
Sam scoffs out a confused laugh, "Inside...?" He says confusedly. Dean shakes his head, "No, no- You're gonna go out back and comfort Y/N."
Sam swallows, "She doesn't want that from me-" He begins to argue, but Dean interrupts him with an annoyed sigh. "If you don't get your ass back there in five seconds, i'll hit you."
Sam puts his hands up in mock surrender, a hushed "okay, okay" being whispered under his breath. Dean smiles approvingly and pats him on the back as Sam nervously walks down the path that leads to the docks.
He can see your silhouette sitting at the edge of the dock, your feet hanging off into the water and your shoes next to you. He can hear how your sniffles and cries get louder as he approaches, and he immediately regrets walking down here. He goes to turn around and leave you alone, but you notice his presence before he can.
"What’re you doin’ back here?" You mumble. Sam swallows and takes a seat next to you, he takes his shoes off and places them to the side, rolls his pant legs up, and slips his feet into the icy water.
"I jus’ wanted to see if you were okay." He whispers. You scoff, your arms crossing over your chest as your feet swish in the water.
The both of you sit in an uncomfortable silence. Sam has absolutely no idea how to even talk to you without saying something snarky, and he's sure it's probably the same for you.
"Can I ask you something?" You eventually question, glancing at Sam from the corner of your eye. Sam nods, scratching his arm nervously, "Uh, yeah. Yeah, go ahead."
"Why... why do you hate me?" You mumble quietly. You keep your eyes on the water, too nervous to seem Sam's reaction to the question.
"Well, that's easy." He says. “I hate how annoying and insufferable you are- and I hate it when you act like you're better than me. Oh! I really hate it when you act like family game nights are life or death, because let me tell you, they're never that serious."
You scoff and shove him lightly, "Yes they are! I would rather die than lose to you and Dean."
Sam rolls his eyes and throws a hand up, "I'm not finished." Your eyes widen as you throw your hands up in surrender, "My bad."
He clears his throat, "I hate it when you make me go shopping with you or drag me places. I hate when you laugh so hard your face gets red and you start snorting, but then you make it worse because you try to stop it and it just comes out as this... half-snort half-wheeze sound." He shudders, and you chuckle under your breath.
"I hate it when you sing off tune in the shower. I hate how your eyes get all wide whenever you see a stray cat on the street and you force us to stop the car and pull over just so you can try to pet it...” He swallows.
A pregnant pause fills the space between you, and you assume he’d finished his rant, but he continues. “I… I hate it when we go back home to Kansas at the end of August, and I know I won’t be able to see you for another year, because sometimes I forget how to function without you there to tell me off.” He confesses. Your eyes widen as you try to process his words.
“I hate when you get crushes on guys who don’t deserve you in the slightest. It makes me so unbearably mad.” He mutters.
“Sam…” You mumble, eyes beginning to well with tears.
“I hate when I can hear you crying in your room and I can’t comfort you. Really, I hate it when you’re anything other than happy if i’m being completely honest.” He shrugs, “I hate that even though I want to despise you with everything I have, I can’t.” He finally looks at your shocked face. The tears have started to roll down your cheeks at this point, and regret immediately fills his chest.
“Oh, God, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have fucking said any of that.” He pulls his feet out of the water and grabs his shoes, attempting to make an escape, but you grab his arm and pull him back down next to you.
“Sam.” You sniffle, “Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?”
Sam stammers for a second, “Because… because you hate me.”
You shake your head so fast he’s sure you’ll get whiplash, “I don’t hate you. God, I don’t think I ever have hated you.” You whimper.
Sam bites the inside of his cheek, his eyes darting across every curve of your face. “Then why…?”
You laugh and cup his cheeks, “Because I thought you hated me.”
Something in Sam’s head clicks as he realizes just how stupid the two of you really are. He suddenly lets out a boyish giggle, “We’re idiots aren’t we?”
You’re interrupted by a whistle behind you. You both turn to see a gleaming Dean, “ ‘Bout time the two of you came clean. I was gettin’ tired of listenin’ to you guys complain’ about each other.”
You and Sam just smile, cheeks turning a light pink.
So, yeah, you hated Sam Winchester.
But, sometimes hate is just another word for something else entirely, isn’t it?

will's hands were around his phone as soon as he was done in the shower. the blonde didn't even take the time to change into clothes as he tapped away and stalked where samy's plane currently was. a grin curled onto his lips seeing her exactly thirty minutes away from the airport.
"what's got you so smiley?" eamon whacked his own towel against will's shoulder as he passed by the stall.
"girlfriend's coming to town," gabe answered with a smirk on his lips before will could even say a word.
"ooh, the girlfriend, huh? has she been to boston yet?" eamon wondered with his own smile.
"is that the same girl who gave you those wicked hickeys a few weeks back?" mike poked his head into the conversation. his words had will blushing to the tips of his ears.
"yup, that's the one," ryan filled in as he leaned back into his stall.
"you mean to tell me hughes is coming here?" now connor joined the group and half the team in the locker room listened in while gaining knowledge of the star freshman's plans this weekend.
"she'll be at the formal tomorrow," will informed, finally throwing a t-shirt over his head. some of the guys let out oohs and ahhs at that information.
"we finally get to meet little hughesy??" colby exclaimed making the other boys chuckle.
"just don't be too weird, okay? do not bring up anything we talk about in here to her, promise?" will eyed his teammates seriously knowing how they got around the girlfriends. they were always sharing unwanted and lousy information that definitely did not need to get shared aloud.
"what? don't want her knowing we know how many times you guys have done it?" aidan teased earning hoots and hollers from the other juniors and seniors.
will's poor blush got even worse under the commotion. he saw ryan and gabe snickering to one another while sending the boy knowing looks. some teammates they were.
"alright, shut up. just be normal if that's even possible for some of you," the freshman rolled his eyes, quickly disappearing from everyone to finish dressing himself.
"can't promise anything, smitty! get a few drinks in us and we're saying anything," jack called.
all will did was roll his eyes. he knew samy was used to hockey players and their antics, but he still didn't want his entire team making a fool of themselves in front of her. he wanted her to like them and them to like her. will was very big on gaining people's approval—especially samy.
gabe and ryan happily tagged along to the airport with will. if the blonde didn't know any better, they were probably just as excited—maybe more—to see samy. something in will's heart warmed though knowing his linemates were so close with one of the people he cared the most about. he knew how much the two missed being in michigan and all of ellen's delicious homemade meals when they visited on the weekends. all of them were counting down the days they were all together again at the lake house.
the three were bouncing on their heels waiting by the gate while watching everyone unload from the plane. with them being so tall, they were able to see over most people's heads as they searched for samy's familiar mop of brown curls.
"i see her!" ryan exclaimed and the other spotted her also searching for them through the sea of people.
will began pushing his way forward to meet her in the middle. he felt like a little kid on christmas with how big his smile was and how tightly he embraced the girl when they finally met in the middle. his hug was so tight samy's feet lifted off the ground a little in a small spin.
"hey willie," samy beamed into his shoulder.
"hi pretty girl, missed you," the boy mumbled back, reluctantly letting her go for a moment. the girl's eyes spotted gabe and ryan hanging back, so she quickly jumped towards them.
"aw, my two favorites came to get me too," samy giggled as they both wrapped their arms around her shorter frame.
"good to see you too, hughesy. been a while," ryan chuckled.
"two favorites?" will cleared his throat, raising his eyebrow.
"obviously you're the first," the girl chuckled, tugging her arm back around her boyfriend after hugging ryan and gabe. the boy grinned as he basically smushed samy into his side.
"someone's jealous,," gabe teased which only earned him a harsh glare from his friend.
"you hungry at all? thinking about grabbing lunch with aram and drew back on campus," ryan wondered as the four made their way back down to baggage claim.
"is that even a question? of course i'm hungry," samy beamed making the guys laugh.
ryan and gabe helped grab samy's suitcase while catching up about soccer and school. will hung back, gladly letting his linemates talk since he's heard it all already from their nightly facetime calls. the smiles on ryan and gabe's faces were enough to tell will how much they enjoyed being around samy. it was something the blonde worried about when he first introduced them two years ago, but he should've known there was nothing to worry about.
obviously samy got shotgun in will's car, so the guys stuffed themselves into the backseats. samy excitedly told them about her spring season while they chimed in with small tidbits from hockey.
"did smitty tell you all the guys on the team are excited to meet you tomorrow?" ryan wondered.
"they are?" samy giggled to herself while both boys nodded.
"you should've heard them in the locker room earlier," gabe grinned while will eyed him through the rearview mirror.
"you're kind of a big deal to them i guess," will mumbled a bit shyly. his ears turned a slight pink thinking back to their teasing remarks.
"so i've heard. i can't wait to meet them," the brunette chuckled.
lunch with the six of them felt like old times back in michigan. somethimg about being all together and laughing like they hadn't been apart the last few months brought a sense of comfort and nostalgia knowing that in a few years they really weren't going to be together like that.
samy and will retreated back to his dorm afterwards to spend some much needed alone time together before tomorrow. the girl grinned when her eyes caught sight of will's new wall decorations as soon as she stepped into the room.
"aw, you two took my suggestions," she beamed and glanced over at gabe's side too.
samy's heart warmed seeing so many pictures of her on will's side. he had three framed photos and probably 10-15 mixed into the photo collage on his wall. a smile crept onto the blonde's lips watching his girlfriend inspect every aspect of his side since she last visited.
"this one's my favorite," he pointed to one of the many photos in the collage.
samy ws laughing at something whoever took the photo said, but will's eyes had never left her. the gaze in his eyes said a lot more than words could.
"wait, i didn't even know this picture existed. when was that?" the girl wondered, jumping onto will's bed to get a better look.
"like last summer?" the boy shrugged some.
"i didn't even realize you were looking at me," samy giggled.
"i know. that's why i like it," her eyes flicked to will's and that same stare from the photo was in his eyes. a small blush painted her cheeks as she quickly looked away before he noticed.
"it was nice seeing the guys. i missed them," samy changed the subject as she sunk further into will's bed.
"they were really excited to see you. they really miss michigan. i do too," the boy kicked his shoes off to join her. his words softened out samy's expression.
"best two years ever having you guys so close by. i can't wait for summer," her voice dropped a little knowing how far off summer was still.
will's arm curled around her waist to bringing her into him. "me neither. this long distance sucks, but i'm glad you're here. tomorrow's gonna be fun," his fingers carefully brushed some of her hair away from her face.
a teasing smile grew on samy's lips, "how bad are they gonna chirp at you?" she knew all too well about his teammates constant teasing.
"hopefully not too bad. i told them to cool it," will mumbled with an embarrassing blush that samy adored nonetheless.
the two spent the rest of the afternoon in each other's arms after two long months apart. gabe came back later that night to the sight of them sound asleep and some random movie playing off of will's computer. the dark-haired boy quickly snapped a photo before shutting will's laptop and placing it somewhere safe. he quickly sent the photo to the freshman group chat, a smirk on his lips as he got himself ready for bed.
will stood in front of the full length mirror getting his tie ready while samy got herself ready in the bathroom. he'd be lying if he said he wasn't just a little nervous for tonight. the hockey player knew his teammates would like her—they literally fangirl over her—he was just afraid they'd become too much or something.
gabe threw his suit jacket over his shoulders while trying to look over will in the mirror. "dude, you're hogging the mirror," the dark-haired boy complained.
"i'm almost done," will mumbled, fidgeting with his collar now.
"go look at yourself next to your girlfriend in the bathroom," gabe shoved will out of the way. the blonde stumbled sideways, catching himself on the door.
"dude," the blonde glared at him.
"what? there's a bathroom for a reason," gabe shrugged, seemingly unbothered by pushing his friend out of the way.
will rolled his eyes before gently knocking on the bathroom door. "yeah?" samy asked.
"can i come in? gabe's kicking me away from our mirror," will wondered. he heard samy laugh and then a yes, so he carefully pushed the door open.
the sight in front of him made the boy stop in his tracks. samy leaned over the counter trying to apply mascara and her dress was one will hadn't seen before. the material was satin or something because it shined in the light and hugged all of the right places. blue was most definitely samy's color.
"like what you see?" the brunette smirked. she caught will's wandering eyes through the mirror, finally turning to him once she had her mascara on.
pink colored will's skin from his neck to his ears. "you look beautiful," he mumbled, slowly stepping further into the bathroom and letting the door close a bit.
"you don't look bad yourself," samy smiled at his all black suit and tie look.
will stepped forward even more so his one arm could snake around samy's waist. he pulled her into his chest while his eyes shamelessly dropped down to her chest area and back up. "i can't believe you're mine," he nearly whispered making the girl chuckle.
"you're sweet. i think i'm almost ready," samy's hands brushed back some of will's unruly curls. he flushed under her touch and brought her to his lips before he let her go.
their kiss was filled with a lot of love. will's grasp on her waist kept her in place, kissing her deeper which allowed him to push his tongue into her mouth. samy's hands toyed with the hair on the nape of his neck, indulging in her boyfriend's slight neediness before she needed to finish getting ready. his boyish instincts started taking over as his other hand began sliding down past her waist.
before he could reach her butt, samy pulled herself away. "i gotta finish getting ready. don't wanna be late," she giggled.
will let out a small groan in protest, "you're annoying."
"maybe."
samy turned back to the sink, eyeing her makeup scattered across the counter. will's eyes did one last once-over of his girlfriend before tearing his eyes away and doing his finishing touches. another five minutes went by and the couple was finally ready. gabe looked up from his bed, smiling at the two.
"finally. scared i'd have to walk in there myself," he joked.
will rolled his eyes while samy just chuckled. the three headed out of the dorm where they met ryan, drew, aram, and will vote downstairs to drive over together. the seven exchanged their hello's before dividing everyone up between will, drew, and ryan's cars. gabe stuck himself with will and samy, so the three continued out to the parking lot.
samy smiled when will opened her door for her.
"so charming," gabe mumbled as he climbed into the back.
"wish he did that for me," ryan laughed as he walked by.
poor will knew he wasn't going to escape the chirping all weekend, especially tonight. the drive into downtown stayed uneventful with minimal comments from gabe. they pulled into what looked like a very fancy bar in the heart of the city. samy hooked her arm around will's as the three walked in. a lot of the upperclassmen were already there mingling and their attention was caught when samy and will walked in.
"yo, smitty!" aidan exclaimed, running around the bar to the couple.
"what's up, hreschuck," will grinned.
"you must be samy. we've heard a lot about you," aidan turned to the girl beside his teammate.
"it's good to meet you," the two exchanged a friendly hug before the older player went to greet gabe.
"it's her! it's little hughesy!" connor jumped up, running to hug samy.
"connor miller! it's been forever since i saw you," the brunette laughed. she remembered connor playing with luke in the ntdp before they headed off to separate schools.
"i know! when i heard you were smitty's girl i just couldn't believe it. how's your brothers?" the older boy wondered.
"they're good. quinn's in van. jack and luke are in jersey. i'm the only one left in michigan," samy chuckled a little.
"god, i can't believe moosey's in jersey. i can't believe you're old enough to be in college. you play soccer right?"
will lingered beside samy while the smile on his lips grew. he never put two and two together that samy would know some of these guys through her brothers. he loved seeing her eyes so bright talking to connor about her brothers and soccer knowing she'd talk nonstop about them at any chance she got. maybe he wouldn't get chirped at as much as he thought.
just as will thought that, colby and mike bounced over to where the couple was. "aw, she really does exist," colby cut into the conversation causing will's face to flush.
"i'm colby. that's mike. we've heard a lot about you being smitty's girl," colby continued as he held his hand out.
"it's nice to finally meet you guys," samy laughed, shaking their hands.
"don't pay much mind to them. colby's going a little crazy tonight since he's graduating in a few months," connor laughed.
"can do whatever i want and they won't kick me off the team," the older guy shrugged.
"sometimes we thought smitty was lying about dating you," mike chimed in.
"yeah, sometimes i don't believe it either," samy joined into their teasing. her gaze slid towards her boyfriend still beside her who blushed hard.
"i mean he definitely picked a good one," colby nodded.
"why don't you guys get some drinks and food before the other guys eat it all," connor laughed, pushing samy and will further into the bar and pretty much saving them from more of mike and colby's annoying remarks.
"jesus, sorry about them," will mumbled when they were out of ear shot.
"don't apologize. i thought it was funny," samy shook her head with a smile.
"they don't know how to shut up ever," the blonde rolled his eyes.
"you forget i'm used to it after growing up with three brothers who have hockey friends of their own," the girl giggled making will flush.
"i know. i know. thanks for coming again," will placed a chaste kiss to her lips.
samt stuck to will's side for most of the night, but she enjoyed seeing him in his comfort zone. all of the guys on the team were so close with one another. the upperclassmen treated the underclassmen like brothers despite the slight chirping. she could tell how much will loved it and how much he fit in with them.
even though her boyfriend did most of the talking, she was glad to be at his side in a pretty dress for the night supporting him in what he loved the most.

I always do this too but then I get really nervous when it actually happens 😂
I never did that, but it sounds so bloody sweet. I hope you like with what I came up!

The team—consisting of Steve, Sam, Natasha, Clint, and Bucky—had just returned from their mission in the snowy depths of Poland, still partially in their tactical gear, heavy duffle bags thrown over their shoulders or tiredly carried in their hands. Bucky felt as if he could sleep for hours if he hit the bed any time soon, and even thought the nightmares wouldn’t plague him as much as they usually used to, but he couldn’t fool himself that much. Instead, he dreaded the return to the empty bedroom he called his ever since joining his best friend and being out of rehab. He would much more prefer it if he could grab one of the books neatly stacked on the bookshelf—the only furniture, other than his closet, really in constant use—and make himself comfortable in the lounge or in the labs with…—
As the thought struck him, not really out of the blue because he was constantly thinking about her, Bucky stopped in his tracks and made Sam almost run into him on his way to his own room on their shared floor. “What the…? Could you please not randomly stop in front of my face?!” The brooding soldier didn’t even spare a glance at the complaining man in his back, who got on his nerves on a daily basis and let the duffle bag fall from his left shoulder as if suddenly pummeled by almost excruciating pain.
Steve had turned at the commotion in his back, eyes swiftly moving over the two men he considered his closest friends, before taking Bucky in, who now had even grabbed the base of his freshly crafted metal arm and let his shoulder slowly but steadily rotate. “You alright, Buck?” The brunet felt awful for worrying Steve in such a matter, knowing how the blond tended to be the mother hen of the entire group, always looking out for each and everyone, but he couldn’t help himself. So, he shrugged with the unharmed shoulder, fingers still closed around the metal covered by the rigid fabric of his combat jacket. “Not sure. Felt it earlier too. Probably should get that checked out,” Bucky muttered and attempted to gather the bag from the floor, but Steve was fast to stop him. “I got this, pal. Go and let someone take a look at it, but I need their approval to let you back in the field.”
With that, the blond soldier grabbed his bag and continued his way while Sam threw him a suspicious look as he walked past him, following the whispering and gossiping rest. He didn’t bother to listen in on them and instead turned back to where he came from and entered the labs next to the landing pad with the best view over the lake after a swipe of his keycard. The music, which had played until the glass door opened in front of him, stopped as soon as he stepped into the spacious room, equipped with the best of the best—at least, he assumed it because he didn’t know a single thing by name or function in his line of sight.
Tranquility found its way into his constantly working and often haunted mind, letting the tension in his shoulders disappear like snow at the sight of spring’s first sunshine, and he finally was able to take a deep breath, even before his eyes found a messy mop of hair peeking between screens and equipment.
“If you think you need to drag me out for another unnecessary father-daughter lunch date, you can immediately turn on the spot and move your ass out of here agai—…”
Her sentence ended as she looked up and saw him standing in the middle of her sacred space instead of her father. Bucky could see how her eyes widened a fraction, only a second, before a radiant smile crept onto her already pretty face. “James,” YN greeted him with the same tone she always used when talking to him—always so incredibly soft as if he was something precious she needed to protect. He didn’t think he was or that he even deserved an ounce of her kindness and gentleness, but he couldn’t keep his distance either.
“Hey, doll.” The nickname had started to slip naturally some time ago, but gladly, YN never seemed to hold any objections against it. Quite the opposite because he could always hear her heartbeat increasing while her cheeks blushed adorably. He could witness it just now, and that made him smile the first genuine smile since going on that mission. “What can I do for you? Is everything alright?” He remembered again with what excuse he had found his way into her presence and nodded, shame practically swirling in his body. “Uhm… I think something isn’t right with-with the arm,” Bucky managed to get out and felt even more ashamed at the sight of worry creeping up into her mesmerizing eyes, which had captured him since she first had laid them on him. “Oh, fuck. Okay, okay. We’ll get this fixed, yeah? I’m so sorry if it hurts or if the mission was at risk or if it troubled you or—…”
YN only stopped her rambling apology the moment she had reached him, and Bucky had gotten a soft hold of her hand. “It’s alright, doll. Really. Everyone came back without a scratch.” Except for your mind, the voice inside his head tauntingly whispered, but her touch was fast to silence it again. “Well, okay. Still, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let you wear it without running some last tests after the transport from Wakanda.” The soldier followed her lead and tenderly squeezed her fingers, still entangled with his, as he sat on the chair she pulled out for him. “Actually, it’s nothing major. Probably have to still get used to it.”
It was a masterpiece she had crafted for him with the assistance of Shuri and the Wakandan materials, reminding him once more why he didn’t deserve this woman.
Her soft hands helped him out of his combat gear, leaving him with a bare chest in her labs, making him almost regret it. Bucky never liked it when she saw the many ugly scars and the deformed tissue that once was his left shoulder. But the moment her gentle fingers started to trace along the edge of his new arm where it was connected to the new prosthetic head, those thoughts almost entirely vanished, and his mind was only able to capture every angle and every expression of her face as she started to do her work.
“It looks good, great even. Almost… perfect.” Her whispering voice sounded as if YN was in a trance as her eyes wandered over every inch of his shoulder and the arm now resting in her hands, making him feel every single touch. “How’s the haptic feedback? Can you still feel…this?” He tried to look, but with a laugh, YN stopped him from moving his head by cupping his chin with her fingers. “No, don’t look. That’s not how those questions work. Your brain would tell you you feel something even if it’s not the case,” she grinned while Bucky thought his heart would explode every second at the even closer proximity of their faces.
At least he knew he wasn’t the only one realizing it, and a grin started to tuck at his lips. “Again. Do you feel this?” YN started to trace indecipherable patterns on his arm’s black and gold-infused vibranium, letting shiver after shiver run down his spine. “I never was good at guessing letters written on me,” the soldier mumbled, eyes almost entirely closed, imagining the sight of her fingertips tracing his arm wrapped around her middle in the morning light. “That’s okay.” Her words were just as quiet as his, and the sudden feel of her soft, warm lips pressing a gentle kiss to his temple made him gasp for air like some kind of unkissed boy whose crush took the first step in their own hands. His eyes shot open, and Bucky was faced with YN’s face and a tender smile playing around her lips. “You could’ve told me that nothing really was amiss, you know? I’m the last person who’d judge. I thought we already went past that.”
Swallowing, Bucky shrugged his shoulders and took the black shirt out of her hands after YN had handed it to him. “Steve said he would need your approval so I thought… No, wait. I didn’t really think. I’m… Shit, I’m sorry, doll.” Now he felt even worse than upon entering her safe space and bothering her with his nonsense, but as both her hands cupped his neck, he couldn’t hold back and wrapped his hands around her tiny-seeming wrists. “You never need to apolgize for coming here, James. I love your company. You’d never be a bother or a hassle or a nuisance, so stop thinking that.”
His eyes widened at that last comment, and YN shrugged, an embarrassed expression settling on her face. “It’s harder for me to shut your or anyone’s thoughts out when they trip into that direction. Sorry for prying and invading, and—…”
He shut her up by taking a leap of faith and kissed her.

Slight shifting in your sleep, sniffling every few seconds to stifle your tears through the night. You were thankful you grew tired of crying and that was your way to sleep. But waking up the next morning with your body being its own alarm, you were reminded of the events of last night.
Every time you blinked to keep your eyes from their dry state, flickers of Sam's face flashed behind your lids. You had never seen someone look at you in such betrayal, let alone your best friend. For a moment, you thought it was a horrific nightmare, but with the scent of Josh's natural musk hitting your nose, you knew you were stupid to try and convince yourself that you hadn't completely broken Sam's trust for you.
And then there you were again, choking up on your hot tears and muffling yourself in Josh's chest just in case it would wake him up. It did stir him awake, and with a slight groan, he squeezed you tightly as a hand raised to the side of your head to place strangled hairs behind your ear.
You felt like apologizing for crying. For waking him up because you were riddled with such guilt. But you didn't think you'd be able to coherently say something with your throat holding itself in a knot, so you just ignored using words for now.
Josh pressed a light kiss on your forehead, rubbing his hand on your back up and down to try and soothe you. You were indecisive on whether to meet his eyes or not, but you chose too anyways.
You snaked a hand through your bodies and up to your face as you wiped your eyes clean of tears. With a few deep, collected breaths, you were able to suppress your crying and only feel the light headache that always told you that you weren't done crying, but for now, you were.
"How are you feeling?" Josh asked you hoarsely. He knew the answer; it was obvious with the lingering tears that rested in your waterlines. But he chose to bear the question anyways.
You let out an airy laugh in attempt to keep your suppressed cries down. "Like shit."
He clicked his teeth and pushed his bottom lip out enough into a pout. If a single tear fell down your cheek, he was there to wipe it free with his thumb.
You exhaled shakily, tugging on your bottom lip once your chin began to quiver. "I feel like a terrible fucking friend. I feel like this is all my fault."
He nodded slowly. "It's not your fault."
"Well, it has to be someone's, right? I'm not blaming you for this, because that's a shitty thing to do, but I think we are both in the wrong."
He gave you another nod. With a huff, he said, "I don't think we should settle on blaming each other because we are together, and Sam doesn't approve." He caressed your cheek with his thumb lightly. "You're not...you're not regretting any of this, are you?"
For a second, you hesitated. Of course, you didn't regret any of it, but regret did in fact punch you in the gut when you saw Sam's reaction. You weren't going to answer with uncertainty of how you felt, because this was not the time to lose another person and put you through more grief than you already had seemed to be in. You have always been sure of wanting Josh, despite what your best friend thought. But seeing how hurt Sam was, how disappointed he was in the both of you, gave you the impression that he would never forgive you.
"No, no I don't, Josh." You rubbed your lips together, following it with an inhale. "I just, I don't know how I'm going to face Sam again. There's now a huge elephant in the room we have to address, and I don't think I'm going to be able to do it without breaking down and feeling like I'm the wrong."
"You can't burden yourself with guilt because of him. You can't just let him make you feel shitty about your decisions because he doesn't like them. That's his own thing to deal with and get over." He cupped your cheek with his pinky finger running under your jaw to maintain eye contact with you. "I don't feel bad about anything we've done, but I do feel upset knowing I hurt him. But I'm not going to call it quits with you because he can't get a grip on the fact that we can't choose who we fall for. You said that the first night we kissed, remember?"
You gave him a quick nod. You knew he had more to say, so you watched him take a hesitant pause with an exhale and continuing.
"You can't blame yourself for having feelings, y/n. No matter how much you try to control them, they'll just end up bubbling up and consuming you until you can't fight them off anymore. Sam has every right to be upset because he's human, but he doesn't have the right to choose who you go out with. All we can do is just explain ourselves to him, and hope that he'll agree not to dismiss us because he doesn't like us together."
You slightly furrowed your brows together. "What if he doesn't want to talk to us? To see us? What if he's just so pissed off that he's decided to completely cut me off and-."
"Y/n, y/n," he gave you a quiet chuckle, rubbing your cheek with his thumb in a coaxing matter to get you to stop your rambling. "He's not going to do that. And he can't take me out of his life because we're brothers who so happen to be in a band together. You've been his best friend for so many years and this is the singular bump in the road you two have had together. If he's stuck around for this long, he's sure to listen and try to understand you and I."
You released yourself from his grasp as you rolled onto your back. You pressed the palm of your hand onto your forehead and gazed up to the ceiling. "All of this is giving me a headache," you shot your eyes to Josh, who raised himself up by his forearm and gave you a quiet laugh. "I just hope he doesn't hate me."
"Hate is a strong word." Josh cocked his head to the side and put on a sympathetic face.
"All of Sam's feelings are strong. I'm sure he feels a bit of hatred towards me, or us both. I mean, I don't blame him for feeling it."
"I know this is going to be hard to stop thinking about, but we should get some breakfast. Get up and get ready for the day so we can talk to him, alright? I'll be by your side through all of this. There's two of us in a relationship, not just one. I promise you that everything is going to-."
"Well, you promised me that he wouldn't find out the way he did, but that happened." You shot up from the bed, throwing your covers off yourself as you stood up from your mattress. You weren't sure why you were growing frustrated with Josh, maybe because he seemed to not be on the same level of hurt as you. "How can I believe that everything is going to be fine when he told me he was disappointed in me and looked at me with no remorse?" You flung your hands out from your sides. "How can I trust in you that you're going to help me fix this?"
He brought himself up on his knees and scooted over to you, flinging his legs off the bed and standing in front of you. "All I can do," he brought his hands to your face, "is promise you that I'm going to fix this - that we're going to fix this. All I can do is assure you that your pain is only temporary and that he's not going to fuck everything up because you feel guilty about it. You promised me that you wouldn't let him get in the way of us. Now, that's one promise I don't want to break." His eyes flicked between the both of yours before continuing. "Do you?"
Your eyes began to well up again with your bottom lip starting the rapid pace of shaking. He was speaking to you with a stern voice, and you weren't looking for a fight. You were just so exhausted with everything happening at once, and everything falling out of line. This wasn't in the plan; this wasn't supposed to happen. Now, you were unprepared. You were stuck staring at Josh with the thought of hesitancy.
You let out a choked breath that your throat forced you to release. "I don't, Josh. I'm just doubtful that this will all work itself out."
He brought your forehead to his lips, placing a long kiss onto it. After doing so, he brought you into his arms and had you wrapping your own around his back. "All we can do is grabble up as much hope as we can. It might take time to sort this out, but at least we can say we put the effort into making this better."
You squeezed him as tightly as your shut eyes were pressing themselves. Any tears that brewed up in your waterline had you forcing them out of your system so you could keep your composure. You were sick of crying over this, sick of feeling emotionally drained over the situation. It was the most frustrating thing to try and understand who was at fault in this, because who was to blame? It was like all of you were in the wrong, but all right in your own ways at the same time. An agonizing headache pounded at the back of your brain, and you decided that it was time to stop plaguing yourself and try to go on with the day.
You looked to Josh with your lips sealed together, nodding in understanding and bringing yourself to his lips. That kiss felt more like a promise to him. Like a promise that you weren't going to, in a sense, break up with him because of Sam. A promise to him that you weren't going to let your emotions get the best of you because Sam was a creeping thought in the back of your mind telling you that you should feel ashamed of your actions.

You and Josh walked downstairs to Jake sitting at the island with a red coffee cup in hand. He found the both of you, smiling at the sight and placing his cup down as he folded his hands together.
"Glad to see you both awake. Haven't seen Sam yet, though." He shrugged, standing up and placing his plate into the sink. "I made him some avocado toast, but I think it's gross by now."
You looked to Josh, who gave you the same look of "he doesn't know". You could feel the knot in your throat twisting again and nausea thumping around in your stomach, but you gave yourself a moment to breathe before nodding to Josh as a sign you wanted him to speak for you.
"He's probably not going to come down. Best if you just give him his food yourself." Josh muttered with his eyes shot down to his feet.
Jake cocked his brow at the both of you, giving himself a second to look between you and Josh in confusion. "Did something happen?"
You gave him a silent nod. "He knows now." You gave a quick look to Josh, then back to his twin.
Jake's eyes widened, mouth partially hung open and pressing his tongue into his cheek. "Oh," he said, "guessing he didn't take it well?"
Flashes of his scowling face and his bitter words flew in your mind. All you could give to Jake was a shake of your head as you pressed your lips together to contain yourself from crying. There was no point in letting any tears fall to show your sadness when your body language already spoke for you of your guilt.
Josh placed his hand on your lower back in an attempt to console you. "Not at all."
"Guess that explains why he hasn't come down yet." He shrugged with a sigh. "Should I go check on him?"
"You don't think he wants to be left alone?" Josh questioned him.
Jake rolled his head to the side, then tilting it slightly back in thought. "Probably, but I'm still going to go see if he's okay. He doesn't know that I know, so maybe I'll get something out of him."
You both nodded in agreement to Jake, and he left the both of you alone to go to Sam's bedroom. You let your eyes and head follow Jake up the stairs and finally watching him disappear. You even tuned your ears to see if Sam would let him in, and when you heard the door open and close, you exhaled heavily before turning your attention back to Josh.
He had grabbed you a plate of waffles, doused in syrup, and you both joined together on the couch in the living room. You even found yourself sitting in the same spot you and Sam cuddled up together at on the sofa for the movie night.
Josh took his place next to you with a plate of his own, handing you a fork and digging into his breakfast quietly. The air was tense. There wasn't much to say, so you both just ate in silence. Eating seemed to help keep you from crying, so you just focused on the food in front of you and stuffing it into your mouth to ignore any thought of your best friend.
You found yourself with no appetite, but still eating at least half of the sticky waffles Josh grabbed for you. You left quietly to clean off your plate, then looking over to Josh who watched your every move.
He eventually picked himself up after a few moments and joined you at the sink and embraced you from behind. He placed multiple kisses along your shoulders, trailing up to your neck and cheek until you released a light giggle. He gave you a small smile, pecking your lips and continuing to watch you wash dishes with his head over your shoulder.
Eventually the day carried on and still no sight of Sam. Jake notified you that Sam was barely speaking to him and said he just wanted to be left alone, so you all agreed to carry on the day without him.
It didn’t feel right doing things without him, especially because he was the one that invited you here in the first place. Going anywhere without him made any atmosphere feel off. You couldn't pretend he wasn't in town or that he was out with friends. With Josh's hand intertwined with yours, you were reminded that Sam was alone in his room with his thoughts. Who knows if he was thinking about what you and Josh were up to, or if he was dissociating to forget about his frustrations.
You all tried occupying yourself with things to do away from the lake house, like taking a trip downtown to the shops and having dinner there. Jake wasn't affected by the situation, and you were sure that Josh was putting on his best face for you. But in your case, masking your miserable attitude wasn't as easy. And, you didn't have any energy to hide your true feelings anyways.
When you all arrived at home, you were hoping to catch Sam in the kitchen or living room. Maybe watching television or finishing up a meal. But he was still out of sight, and you were growing tired of the distance.
"Do you still want to sit around the fire tonight, y/n?" Josh pulled you to the side as Jake plopped himself on the couch.
"Yeah, yeah I do." You tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. "Think I'm going to go talk to Sam, though."
Josh quirked his brows. "Do you think he'll talk to you?"
"It's childish of him to lock himself in his room all day and throw a tantrum. He has to come out sometime soon. He's here with all of us, anyways." You shrugged. "I'll just ask him if he wants to sit by the fire with us."
Josh pressed his lips to your cheek and gave you a nod. Once you left his side to make the somewhat treacherous journey to Sam's bedroom, the twins went outside to get the fire started.
You dragged your feet to his door, and although the hallway wasn't that long, it felt like a never-ending walk. As much as you wanted to see Sam, even if it had only been less than a day, you were unsure if he wanted to see you. He was notorious for holding grudges, especially about things that he highly disapproved of. But you weren't going to let that stray you away from speaking to him.
With a few seconds of hesitation, you gave a few light taps onto the brown wooden door with your knuckles and waited for a response. When none was given to you, your eyes flicked to the doorknob. Would he be upset with you that you entered without his consent?
But when did he ever knock when he'd come visit you?
You turned the doorknob slowly, placing your hand flat on the door and scanning the room quickly. He was sitting on his bed with a pair of sweat shorts, a baggy tank top and his hair tossed up into a bun. His phone screen lit up his expressionless face, but when he looked up to see you, he ignored your presence and put his eyes back onto whatever his phone had to offer.
"Hey," you gave him a small smile, leaning onto the doorframe, "we're going to sit around the firepit for a little. Do you want to join us?"
You waited for a few moments until he gave you a scoff. Looking up to you to show his stern appearance then occupying his focus on his phone screen, you just left him alone by quietly shutting his door and leaving to go to outside for the night.
When the boys saw you alone, Josh stood up quickly once he saw your face contort into one that showed your anguished feelings. Chin slightly quivering, eyes brimmed up with tears, but quickly wiping them away with a sniffle and sitting in your seat without a word. Hopefully by not speaking, you would be able to compose yourself and let your eyes go out of focus on the fire.
"Did he say anything to you?" Josh said.
"Nope. Just looked at me." You stated flatly.
"I think it's time I said something to him." Josh sighed. That caught your attention, and your eyes immediately shot up to him.
"Josh, I don't think he-."
But he cut you off right away. "He can't stay cooped up in there. We need to talk about this, whether we both say something, or one of us does. Maybe I can get him to talk to me."
Josh wasn't going to let you defer him, so you just gave him a singular nod and watched as he walked with a fast pace to the lake house. You blew air out of your mouth, shaped like an "O" with your cheeks puffed out, and relaxed fully forward with your hands folded over one another.
Without a word, Jake took a seat next to you. You weren't sure if it was so that way you wouldn't feel as lonely as you possibly could, or just a change of seating. But he poked at your arm, and your eyes left the fire to look at him.
"Do you want to talk about it? What he said?" He spoke softly with his face lit in a sympathetic expression.
You gave him a short laugh that exhaled through your nose. "I mean, there's nothing much to talk about. He just...was beyond frustrated. Completely blew up with anger." A tight-lipped smile spread on your lips. "Said he was disappointed in me. Said that Josh didn't care about his feelings to his face. It was just inhumane the way he was yelling at the both of us. I have never seen him get so upset before."
You ignored the choking sensation in your throat by clearing it away and running the back of your hand under your nose.
At first, Jake said that he was sorry. But he continued. "He's acting like this is his decision to make."
You exhaled an airy laugh, because that's all you and Josh have said as a reason to continue your relationship because it wasn't Sam's choice.
"Can I be honest with you?" Jake repositioned himself in his chair and leaned forward. When you gave him a nod in agreement, he carried on. "It's definitely a tough position you're in, which is why it's so difficult to figure out what to do. I don't blame you for being upset, but I also don't blame him for feeling the same way."
"I just, I just don't know what to do. You know, I care about the both of them so much. I don't want to break things off with Josh because of Sam, but I don't want to lose my best friend. It'd be stupid for him to want to cut me out of his life because of this, because after all, if me and Josh continue to see each other he'll have to be around me anyways. But I can't just go back to being friends with Josh after everything that's happened. I've had feelings for him for too long for me to just pretend that I never did."
Jake took your words in with a silent nod. He took a few moments to speak, just so he could come up with an answer that would give you some sort of helpful idea of what move was best to make next. "You're in a tight spot, y/n. And it's really not my place to tell you what you should do. But, if you want my advice, I'd try to talk things out with Sam. That's all you can do, honestly. He's just going to have to deal with it. Doesn't mean that he should immediately be okay with it, but it also doesn't mean that he shouldn't give it a shot."
He took another breath before continuing. "I've never been in your position, but that's what I'd do: talk to him and have him realize how much you two care about each other. I don't think he wants to wrap his head around the fact that you truly like Josh because he thinks that you'll make Josh your number one priority instead of him. He's afraid of change, and afraid of someone interfering with your guys' friendships."
"You think he sees Josh as a threat?" You scrunched your eyebrows together.
"Well, yeah. I mean, Josh is the older brother. He's going to see either of us as a problem if it comes to you because you're, well, you. He views you as his little sister, or perhaps the one thing that doesn't have to involve his brothers. Someone that doesn't include us and doesn't have to because you'll stick by his side no matter what. But now that he's seen that that isn't the case, he's threatened."
"I just don't understand, Jake. I mean, I've been friends with him for so long. I've never once put anyone before him, let alone you or Josh. I don't know why he has the connotation that I'd ever let someone get in the way of our friendship."
"I don't know either," he shrugged, "but all you can do is force him to see your side. I can see where he's coming from, but he shouldn't be worried about it. It's not something that should tarnish a friendship."
You ran the tip of your tongue on your bottom lip. "I sure hope not. I mean, I even told Josh that Sam can't choose who I fall for, you know? I can't pick how I feel about people, because no one can do that. It just...happens. I mean, for a while, I felt guilty about my feelings for Josh. But when he told me how he felt, I just gave up on thinking about what Sam would say. At the end of the day, he shouldn't be involved in our relationship anyways."
"I think he's more concerned that you won't need him anymore. I mean, you're going to go to Josh first when you want to talk about something. He's going to be the first person that you'll want to tell anything. And for a while, that was Sam."
"Yeah, I get that. And I don't want him to feel that way at all because that isn't the case. Of course, I'll probably tell Josh things more often than Sam. But that doesn't mean I'm going to leave him high and dry."
"You should reassure him that, then. Think you've got it all figured out what you want to say to him." He placed his hand on your shoulder and gave you a soft smile.
You took in a deep breath and nodded, relaxing back into your chair to watch the fire you hadn't paid much attention to.
"Oh, and by the way," Jake started, "I may be bias, but don't break up with Josh. He's crazy about you."
You quietly giggled and reserved to smiling to yourself from Jake's words. It was comforting to know that even his brother saw how much he cared about you - how deep his emotions ran. It was a nice way to lighten the mood just enough, and for you to run through what you were going to say to Sam.
⊱ ━━━━.⋅ εïз ⋅.━━━━ ⊰
You returned into the lake house and saw Josh stepping down the stairs. You quickly met him halfway and placed your hand on his shoulder.
"Hey, what happened?" You flicked your eyes between his own.
"We sat down and argued - a lot, actually," he laughed, "but I think I got through to him. Might be your turn to go talk to him."
"You think?"
Josh gave you a nod. "I promise."
He cradled your face in his hands and brought your lips onto his softly. The kiss was held for a few moments, before he pulled away and looked at you with an affectionate smile. "Go. I'll be in my room waiting for you."
After the short interaction, you walked quickly upstairs to Sam's bedroom. Without any more moments of hesitation, you knocked on the door and entered.
He was sat on the edge of his bed with his hands folded, eyes immediately meeting yours when you were fully in focus. The both of you shared a moment of staring. You noticed the way his shoulders were scrunched up together, and it seemed that he was trying to cool off from the previous conversation he had with Josh.
"Are you ready to talk now?" You folded your arms together.
"Don't think there's anything else to talk about, y/n. Sure your boyfriend said everything there was to say." He shrugged with a scoff, then averted his eyes to the window in front of him.
You walked over to him and sat next to him, keeping your eyes on his tense face. "Well, I still want to talk to you about this. I'm not going to let Josh be the speaker for the both of us. I want you to hear me as well."
He met your eyes with a face of annoyance, but when he stayed mute, you figured that was him giving you the floor.
"Look, I know how you feel about this. I know it makes you upset, and I know you probably think that our friendship won't mean as much to me anymore. But that's not the case at all. I can balance a romantic and platonic relationship at the same time."
"How long have you two been together for?"
You furrowed your brows. "Did he not tell you?"
"Didn't ask."
"Oh," you nodded, "well, I think about two weeks? Maybe a week and a half to be a bit more specific."
"So, it started on this trip?" He pointed his finger to the ground.
You nodded slowly. "But we've both had feelings for each other before this. Long before this, in fact. We both just didn't know until we went out at night and he-."
"You guys have been hanging out alone?"
"Yes, Sam." You sighed. "Did you expect us to hang out with you guys and us confess to each other how we felt in front of you?"
"Expected you two not to 'confess' anything at all." He shook his head in slight disbelief. "Even after talking to him, I don't understand why you both decided to go behind my back. You know how hurt that makes me, y/n? Doesn't matter that it may have started as friendly. You both never said anything about it."
"You would've been pissed at us if we told you that we were hanging out without you and Jake. Would you have not?"
You watched him give you a huff, followed by an eye roll. He looked away from you for a moment, then stood from the bed and walked to the door. Watching his movements gave you the impression you were supposed to follow him. So, you stood up from the bed and stepped towards him. But he just shut the door and faced you with his back pressed against it.
"You figured that I would just be okay with this? I mean, the thought of you with my brother is just...gross." He shivered lightly for effect.
"We knew you'd be upset. We just thought that you would understand we have feelings for each other that we didn't want to deny anymore. We can't choose who we fall in love with."
"You can think before you act, though." He folded his arms. "Did, did you say, 'love'?"
Your eyes widened slightly. You stammered a few breaths, but none of them consisted of any words.
"You're kidding me, right? You love him? It's been a week or two and you're in love with him, y/n?" He stood off the door and strode to you slowly. His face was becoming a light red, with his eyes squinted.
"I don't fucking know, Sam. So, what if I did? I've known him for just as long as you."
He rolled his eyes again. "I-I don't even know what to say to that."
"Well, why can't you accept that I want to be with Josh, and you have no say in it?" You were growing frustrated. You had your arms folded together tightly, with your lips pressed together firmly.
He shook his head at you. "Because it's just wrong, y/n." He dragged out your name. "I don't fucking like it. You're supposed to be my best friend and here you are running off with my brother."
"I'm not 'running off' with your brother, Sam. I'm never going to put him before you, or you before him. Why can't we live in a world where I can have both? It's like you don't even care about how I feel."
He widened his eyes with the flare of his nostrils. "How you feel? You don't even seem to care about how I feel about this! You're completely just pushing me to the side for your own selfish pleasures because you're living in your own little world where only you and your feelings matter."
"You're being fucking childish!" You pointed your finger at him as your voice raised. "Just because I put what I want first for once in my entire life and not you I'm selfish? Sam, you don't get to tell me what I can and can't do because you don't like it. Now, that's selfish."
"Did you even consider how I felt at all?" His eyes softened a little. Under all the anger, all the frustration, he was hurt. Hurt because you did something without him. Hurt because you went behind his back. "Do you think that I'm entirely in the wrong for feeling the way I feel about this?"
"No, you have every right to be upset about this. I can't control how you feel about things. But I can persuade you into seeing things the way I do because I'm not letting you change my mind on this one. You know how fucking bad I felt seeing how upset you were? Did you know I cried myself to sleep? I cried and cried until I couldn't breathe because I felt so terrible about this! I could've come to you when this started in the first place, but to be honest, I didn't even know how to talk to you about this because I knew you wouldn't understand. Now, I have to stand here and yell at you for you to hear me. Do you realize how pathetic that is?"
He exhaled deeply. All he could do was stare at you with questioning. You tried to pick at his brain through his expression what he was thinking, but for the first time, you didn't know what was on his mind. All you knew was that he was angry and saddened, but that was it. He wasn't giving you any hints for predictability.
His eyes averted from yours and fell to the floor, as if he felt defeated. "Do you care about him more than me?"
"Sam, you can't-."
"Well, do you?" He looked to you, with his eyebrows pulled together. His anger was still present, but the shades of stinging grief shined brighter.
"I care about you both equally. I don't put him on a pedestal because he's my boyfriend. It's a different kind of love I have for the both of you."
He gave you a singular, slow nod. "You were the one thing I had that my brothers didn't." His eyes lightly glistened. If it weren't for the moonlight, you wouldn't be able to see the tears beginning to appear. "Now, Josh has you, and Jake knew all along about you two. I don't have my best friend as much as I used to."
Jake predicted Sam better than you could have. You were taken aback by his words, and especially him shedding his anger to show you the wounds you left. Your face softened and you shook your head in astonishment. Under everything, he was scared of losing you. It seemed more like a misunderstanding, and like he was being a bit too jealous. He never wanted to share you, because after all, that's all he's had to do with his brothers. Third best, third to know - it was all familiar to him. He thought that it would never be the case between you two, but now it was just reminding him off all the things he lost to his older brothers. You would be the greatest loss of them all.
"You're not going to lose me, okay?" You comforted him. You thought of his words to be a bit dramatic, but all of his outbursts were. "I'm not going to push you to the side because I'm with your brother. At the end of the day, you've done more for me than anyone has. I can't just forget all the years that we've spent being friends. I don't want you to ever think that."
He looked away from you again and off to the side of the room. He was collecting himself again in hopes that his vulnerability would wash away. All you could do was give him the time he needed. So, you stood there and waited for a response. "I think you just need to reevaluate your decisions."
"What do you mean by that?" You gave him a puzzled look.
"It's going to take me some time to get over this. I mean, this really fucking hurt, y/n. I think you need to figure out what matters more to you right now."
Your neck brought your head back. You were in shock. If he meant what you thought he meant, you were wondering if you had even gotten through to him with everything you said.
You swallowed your spiteful words and chose to face him with a question. "Are you giving me an ultimatum right now?"
"Is that what it sounds like?" He threw his hands up. It was as if he was frustrated that you had to even ask the question for closure.
"So, none of what I said to you matters and we just argued for no fucking reason for you to tell me I need to choose between you and Josh? Are...are you kidding me?" Your mouth hung open. You still didn't let yourself believe that's what he was going to leave you with. You didn't expect him to just be fine with your new relationship with his brother straight away, but you expected him to try and give it some thought.
"I don't know what else to say to you, y/n. Think I made myself perfectly clear." He gave you a shrug and stood with his statement.
You scoffed. "You're so unbelievably stubborn. Grow the fuck up, Sam. Just because my decisions aren't in your hands doesn't mean you should make me choose between you and your brother. That's childish."
"Seems like you've already made your mind, then." He nodded and stepped back to open the door.
"You're serious?"
"Yup." He nodded his head quickly.
You weren't done talking with him just yet. "Why can't you just accept that I can be friends with you and date Josh at the same time?"
"Why can't you accept that you went behind my back and broke our trust? Yeah, the whole relationship makes me angry, but the fact that you kept it a secret from me is far worse."
"You wouldn't have been okay with it either way, Sam. You can't just try to put up with it instead of clearing it off the table because you don't like it?" You threw your hand out to the side as you spoke.
"Right now, I don't want to even endure it at all. I'm beyond upset with you. When you promise something, you don't break it."
"Well, some promises are meant to be broken." You shook your head. You had only let your voice raise a little, but not enough to be considered yelling. You didn't want the rest of the household to hear you, but you wanted Sam to know you were clearly frustrated with how he was acting.
He took in a sharp inhale and chose to exhale his words. "If that's what you think, then I guess our little discussion is over."
You stood there for a moment to just take in the entire situation. You couldn't wrap your head around the fact that Sam was finally throwing his barrier down, only to flush it away and tell you that you had a choice to make. That wasn't what you were expecting, and after all, it wasn't something you should've had to make.
You finally left the room and stormed down the stairs. You let the feeling of tears forming in your eyes fully consume you. It was uncertain whether you were crying out of anger, sadness - or both, but you didn't care. You were going to let yourself feel whatever your body told you to feel because you didn't even know yourself.
You burst into Josh's room without a warning and causing him to shoot up from his position of laying down and sprawling his hands out at his sides.
"He wants me to choose between you and him. You know how fucking stupid that is, Josh?" You began. "At first, it seemed like I was finally getting him to accept that me and you were going to be together despite what he said," you began to laugh, "but no, he just turned it around and told me that it was him or you."
You could feel your lips shake with your chin and watched as Josh got up slowly from his bed. He placed his hands on your shoulders and examined your face to tell him that you weren't just making this up.
"What are you going to do?" He spoke softly.
"I don't know." You said with wide eyes. You brought your hand to your forehead and continued. "I can't believe that he would do something like this. I don't want to lose him, but I don't want to lose you. I mean, do you think time will tell whether he will come around or not?"
"I'm not sure," he said with disappointment, "but whatever happens, just know that you can't control what he thinks. I know he means a lot to you, and I know how much he cares about you. I'm sure with time he'll realize how immature he's acting and realize that he can't make you pick between us. I'm in disbelief, honestly."
"Yeah, so am I." You laughed. Now, you were just crying out of exhaustion. Tired of all the fighting, all the games Sam was playing with you, all of the words Josh would say to try and console you. It was all too much for you. "I just want to sleep. Can't keep crying over this because it's stupid."
He let you leave his grasp and you made yourself comfortable in his bed, turning on your side and allowing him to wrap himself around you from behind. He held your back close to his chest, pressing kissing on your head every now and then. Your crying came to an end quickly, and you were finally able to rest your eyes.
⊱ ━━━━.⋅ εïз ⋅.━━━━ ⊰
With a few days passing since your encounter with Sam, he had been a bit less distant. Although he was still keeping his distance from you guys, he'd come down and join you all for meals, and even once or twice sitting by the fire at nights with you three. He hadn't talked much since the day you both fought, but he at least acknowledged you all with a quick glance and smile.
You tried making small talk to him, even though there was no point. Even the twins tried to get him to speak, but to no avail. He wasn't budging, and it was just upsetting to see how he could become so ignorant because of his own frustrations.
There was even a time where Josh held your hand across the table at breakfast, and Sam came down to see the sight. You pulled away, and all Sam did was laugh and tell you both there's no need for pretending anymore. And, after that, he made himself some toast and ate in his bedroom.
Seeing where he left the rooms empty was disheartening. It was as if he wasn't there at all, even though you knew he was. All you wanted was for your best friend to be content with you, and maybe with these past few days of separation, he was overthinking everything that happened.
When the trip had landed to only one week left, Sam came back for breakfast and took his usual seat next to you at the dining table. You didn't let it surprise you, nor did you make any comments about it. Going about the arrangement, you knew to act casual. But Jake and Josh just gave Sam a few looks and choosing not to say a word to him.
You knew Jake had gone to see him once or twice. Neither you nor Josh made the effort to talk to Sam because the agonizing grudge he was holding upon you two was still set in stone. Even if you considered it immature, you said all you could say to him. Apologies weren't going to cut it anymore.
He sat quietly next to you and swirled his spoon around in the small bowl that held a mixture of yogurt and oats. You were thankful to see him out of the corner of your peripheral, because you were able to predict that he had something on his mind. Maybe he was just uncomfortable, or maybe he was lost in thought.
He lifted his head up for a moment, taking in everyone at the table before returning his eyes to his plate. His mouth parted open for a moment, and it had you turning your direction to him. But he just shut his mouth and reserving his attention to eating.
"There's, uh, a winery nearby." Jake spoke up to slice the quiet atmosphere. "Figured we could check it out, you know, do something different."
You hummed. "Yeah, that sounds nice."
Josh also agreed with a nod. Then there was Sam, who had stayed mute still. You all three turned to him and waited for him to budge. But nothing. Jake and Josh, who sat opposite of you two, ignored his silence and continued to finish their meal. But you, you just kept your eyes glued on him. You were hoping that by looking at him, he'd grow upset and say something. Anything.
"Danny's coming." Sam muttered before taking a bite of his food.
"Well, maybe he can join us. It'd be nice to see him. Been a while." Josh chimed in.
Sam scoffed. "He's coming to get me."
All of you stopped your motions. Now, everyone had their eyes locked on him.
Sam continued to reiterate. "I'm leaving."
You placed your fork down on your plate, loud enough for it to ring against the ceramic material. "You're what?"
"You heard me. I'm leaving." He turned his head to you and watched your face falter. He continued to keep his focus on you for just a few seconds, then looking down into his bowl.
"Sam, you can't leave. You came here with us. You can't go because you're mad about Josh and y/n." Jake rolled his eyes as he tried to reason with his brother.
"This trip just isn't fun anymore." He shrugged. The chair screeched against the wooden floors as he stood from it. "No point in me staying if I'm just going to be miserable."
You looked up to him with your jaw partially hung low. "You're making Danny drive two hours because you can't get over it? Have, have you even thought about accepting it?"
"Oh, don't worry, I have." He tilted his chin down to you. "But I don't think I want to. Besides, I think you'll have a much better time here without me. Seems like you were able to when you were sneaking around with Josh."
"Sam-."
"No, no, it's okay." He cut you off and gave you a faux sympathetic look. "I understand where your priorities are; I get it. Fucking my brother is much more important to you than preserving our friendship. Fine by me."
He walked away from the table and emptied his bowl. You all gave each other odd glances in questioning. What were you to say to that when you were left in shock?
Jake stood from his chair. "Do you hear how immature you sound right now, Sam? Dude, get a grip."
"This doesn't involve you, Jake. It never did, so it's beyond me why they told you in the first place. Left me out of it and kept it a secret. Played along in their little sneaky shenanigans because you're just as shitty as the both of them." He pointed his finger at Jake. "I just don't want to be here with you three anymore." He glanced at you and Josh. "I'll be gone before you guys get back."
You cocked your head to the side in annoyance. "You're being dramatic, Sam."
"Well, call me what you want. But at least I never went behind your back and broke our trust. I would never do something as fucked up as that because I actually care about our friendship."
You had opened your mouth to speak, but he left before you could utter a sound. It was his way of telling you he was done with the conversation, and that you had no say in what his actions were. You reserved back to the two boys that sat in front of you, but both of their eyes were blown wide.
"He has no concept of sharing." Jake mumbled, to which Josh elbowed his arm and gave him a stern look.
You just ignored Jake's comment and stormed up to Sam's bedroom. With his door left opened, you stopped in your tracks to watch him pack his clothes without your presence being noticed. He seemed content with his choice while he absentmindedly folded his shirts neatly into a pile before plopping them into the suitcase.
Your heart tugged towards his direction, and you dragged yourself into his room.
"You're not seriously leaving, are you?" You spoke with concern. Although you were upset, you didn't have the energy to pick a fight with him and raise your voice.
"What does it look like?" He mumbled as he kept his eyes on his clothing.
"I don't want you to go. None of us-."
But he was sure to cut you off. "It doesn't matter. I've already made up my mind. Hope you have fun spending the rest of this week with the two people you care about most."
You rolled your eyes. "I care about you just as much, Sam."
All he gave you was a shrug with a light sarcastic smile. "I don't know what to believe anymore. I was able to trust you with everything, and now that you've shown me that I can't," he flicked his eyes down to you, "I don't want to find out what else you've been lying to me about."
You opened your mouth to speak, but you shut it with an aggravated whine. You knew there was no point in defending yourself. He wasn't going to give you the time of day to let you tell him that he was overreacting about everything. He was too stubborn to convince, so you gave up.
You walked back down the stairs and saw Jake and Josh conversing by the living room.
"He's really leaving." You threw your hands up. "I can't believe he's really leaving because of this."
"There's no point in pushing him any further," Josh began, "he's made up his mind on how he wants to handle it. Nothing we can do now."
You scoffed. "And you said that we'd be able to fix this. You said that you had it all figured out and that I wouldn't have to worry. But here we are, with Sam pissed at all of us because of this stupid relationship, and him having Danny drive two fucking hours because he can't be in the same house as us anymore."
Jake walked off. He knew it wasn't his place to be in this conversation anymore, so he gave you and Josh the space that you two needed.
Josh took a few steps towards you and lowered his voice as he spoke. "You can't expect this to all be okay in a matter of seconds, y/n. You and I both are well aware that Sam is beyond obstinate about everything. He just needs time to think about it and space. That's all we can give him. I-I don't know what else you want from me."
You huffed. After all, he was right. You were just frustrated that time wasn't on your side. Hell, when was it ever?
You wrapped your arms around his neck, and in return, he brought you into an embrace with his hands enveloped around your back. You were hopeful that the closeness between you two would help you relax.
"I'm just so upset about all of this. It's annoying that there's nothing we can do about it. It's out of our hands, out of our control, and I'm pissed. I just wish I could just wake up from this nightmare and have everything be okay." You said into your arm that closed off Josh's neck.
He placed a kiss on the side of your head. "I wish that's how the world worked. All we can do now is be hopeful that he'll come around."
You maneuvered your head to meet in front of his. You gave him a small understanding smile, along with a soft peck on his lips. This would've never happened if you told Josh you didn't care what Sam thought. This wouldn't have happened if it weren't for you. And here you both were, standing in the same spot that held the exact moment that your guys' first kiss took place at. That damned kiss was the beginning of the downfall of you and Sam, as dramatic as it sounds. But it was true. Now, holding your eyes with Josh's, you couldn't help but wonder if this was all a mistake.

. “I’m gonna carry you to bed if you keep arguing with me about not needing sleep.” With alpha Steve and little one, please
Always love writing a playful Alpha Steve and Little One.
Tumblr media
The water was crisp and cold so late at night. You managed to push yourself up onto the dock and laid out under the stars on the wooden boards, soaking them with the lake water dripping off you. The warm night suddenly felt cool after your swim. Your Little Wolf huffed at your need for a midnight skinny dip, curling up in her sleep with a flick of her tail over her eyes. Tired after a day of running with Sam on the Packs borders.
You should go to bed, your nest was just up the stairs and through the back deck glass doors. When you tilted your head back, you could see Steve's silhouette standing there, watching you stretch out even more, letting your toes splash in the water. He also caught the oversized yawn escaping you.
<Ha, you're caught.> The Little Wolf snickered and you huffed in response.
What's he gonna do? You tilted your head back to look up at the night sky. It wasn't long till heavy boots thumped down the wooden stairs and you scented your Alpha's warm scent. It was soon you felt the Alpha join his Little Wolf, the big masculine presence in your mind making you buzz with anticipation for Steve.
<Catch you and eat you for dinner.> Your Little Wolf crooned in approval to her assessment as she nuzzled her Alpha.
"Enjoying yourself Little One?" Came Steve's rumble. He squatted down near you, running his fingers over the curve of your belly and along the flow of your ribs, feeling the coolness the lake had given your body. Then, because he could, he cupped a breast, palming it in his giant warm palm, all the callouses a bit rough against your softness. You arched into it, not daring to deny your body when it felt so good.
"It felt so good, much needed after todays run." You let your hands reach up to thread into his beard, a constant source of pleasure for you.
"You know what else will feel good?" Steve tilted his face to catch one of your hands, a light bite to your palm in his wolfish way that made you tingle from head to toe, sensing he wanted to play. "You come showering with me and cuddling in bed."
You liked that, in fact, you wanted just that now. But you knew Steve thrived on catching you and 'making' you comply. Your eyes grew hooded, the Little Wolf stirring with her Alpha in your mind. Her paws slapped against the ground with a challenging wave of her tail. The Alpha's growl was all the warning he gave before he gave chase.
"You think so, huh? Pass." You restretched on the dock, letting your toes splash again in the cool water, making it arch above you and rain over the top of both of you. His eyes glowed with the challenge, yellow bleeding through the blues. The predator starting to show.
“I’m gonna carry you to bed if you keep arguing with me about not needing sleep.” He threatened with a playful growl to his tone, making him rumble and tense. You were ready though, the water was no more than a roll of your body and you could dive away while he gave chase.
But not yet, you loved seeing him try to control that urge. "You can't tell me what to do... Alpha." You threw out. That was all it took, you vaulted as if to jump back into the water but strong arms caught you to swing you over a muscled shoulder, making the world spin and you laughed while a hand came down sharply on your bare ass, making you arch in his hold.
"No fair, you didn't give me enough of a head start." You pouted while tugging at his shirt to drag it up, your nails dragging against his back to make the muscles their quiver under your touch. It earned you a bite on your thigh, hard enough to mark you as his. You retaliated with a lick to his neck and nibble on his ear.
"You think I'm playing Little One?" He marched up the stairs, his palm rubbing your ass, pulling on the cheek and he nipped there next, making you wiggle your ass in anticipation.
"I think you are gonna make me scream your name for everyone to hear." You nuzzled against him affectionately, everything in your bond was playful energy, anticipation for what was to come while in the depths of the bond, the two wolves played chase with one another, tackling each other and then starting up again. Now your Little Wolf was sprinting after her Alpha while he was taunting her.
"You are right about that Little One, you fucking sassy minx." He swung you around, landing you on your toes in the bathroom, which was already streaming water. You broke from his hold before he realized what you were going to do, leaping into the shower and letting the water cascade over your curvy body. "Fuck." Steve growled as he started ripping his clothes off hurriedly.

Jack watched his feet swinging for a moment, too short for the tall bed.
He didn't know when he had gotten this power. Maybe he always had it.
He remembered being a baby in his mother's womb and feeling how scared and afraid to have him out there in the world like a baby, so he made himself grown.
Or maybe it was something that came from absorbing Chuck's power, though most of it was gone - Free will was finally real.
Either way, Jack just knew that one day he was in his bed, watching TV on his laptop, and then he looked down on himself and he was just a small child.
He didn't freak out.
It wasn't like he didn't want it.
So he reached for his favourite teddy - talking Marwin, a gift from Cas - and hugged him close. It was so much bigger now, he needed more than just his hand to hold it close.
"What do I do?" he tried to ask, but the bear didn't answer, so he just went back to his show.
Bluey was very cool. The music was nice, and he wanted to be like her.
He wished he had someone to giggle around and play with, like Bluey had Bingo.
Jack kept watching for another hour, and by the time Sam was back to get him for dinner, he was older again.
He didn't understand what it all meant, but he didn't want to stop.
So, since he was an actual adult, he went online and got things for himself. Colouring books, toys, squishmallows - his favourite - and lots of soft clothes that made him feel very small.
Now, Jack knew he should tell someone. He knew he probably should have told his father, most especially. But thinking of telling him made him think of the empty and how he died because he was trying to save him, and his stomach would act all weird, and he knew he would cry if he was smaller.
They didn't talk about things because Jack had fixed everything!
So why mess it up again?
So, he kept it a secret. Dean always said that usually worked. And it did.
Until it didn't.
They were out to a hunt in New Orleans, in the swamps, and Dean was excited to bring Jack along. He wanted Jack to get better at hunting, which made him excited! He craved Dean's approval and worked hard for it.
Even though Dean's motto was ‘prepare for anything’, they were not prepared for five swamp witches. Castiel was able to take some on his own, but with his limited grace, he had to team up with Dean, and Jack did the same with Sam.
He tried to stay close to him, but then he was thrown into the lake, and when he was out, the witches had his dad in a chokehold of vines.
"No!" he cried out.
"You killed my sister," she hissed cruelly. "I'll take something from you, too, now."
The vines wrapped around him, pulling him into the mud, and Jack panicked.
"No, please," he tried to beg as Sam's face became red.
She couldn't hurt him, no!
"I'll drown you until you die," she taunted Jack. "And kill your father here right in front of your eyes, and you can do nothing about it."
"No!" he shouted, feeling his eyes glowing. "You won't hurt him! I won't let anyone else die!"
A blast of light came out of him and he couldn't stop screaming, until his throat was hurting and he was sobbing, tiny feet stuck in the mud and the vines weren't holding him anymore.
"Jack?!" he heard. "Oh my God."
Sam grabbed him, lifting him, and Jack whined, crying and crying, trying to stop but he just couldn't!
His emotions were too much, everything was too much.
He barely understood what the others said as Sam wrapped something warm and soft around him and rubbed his back, walking.
The floor was so distant now, he was so tall.
"It's alright," he spoke softly. "You are alright, it's alright."
But he just fisted his shirt in his little hands.
Of course he knew he was alright! But he was scared.
She had almost killed him.
"Are you sure he isn't hurt?" Castiel asked from behind him.
"I checked," Sam's big hands rubbed his back. "But he won't calm down."
He sat in the car with him, and he could hear movement around them.
"Boy might be small, but he's got some strong lungs," Dean grunted.
They could have died!
Again!
And he couldn’t see them dying again, he couldn’t!
What if he hadn’t saved them, and then they were hurt? And maybe one of the witches was still there and maybe she would come after them, and then his family would be hurt, and…
“Alright!” Dean spoke and the car suddenly stopped. “Give him to me. You drive.”
Sam froze, holding him.
“Dean…”
"I will not be driving back to the motel covered in swamp and witch guts with a screaming kid,” he interrupted him. “Hand him to me.”
Jack cried more. Was he mad at him?
Had he done anything wrong? Why was he so loud and angry?
Sam moved and passed him on, and Jack was ready to hear him saying he was crying too much, and was disturbing them and had to shut, up, but Dean just held him close.
“Hey, Jack,” he spoke softly, rubbing his back with a hand and petting his hair with another. “It’s alright. We’re safe, everyone is safe.”
Jack squeezed his shirt in his hand, trying to breathe. But before they weren’t!
“You’re safe,” he assured him again. “We are safe. We are going to be alright.”
He could just sniff, and Dean moved him back, looking at his face, and focused his green eyes on him.
“Can you breathe with me?” he asked.
Jack tried to nod, still sobbing, and Dean opened his mouth like a fish, taking his hand and putting it on his chest and doing the same with Jack.
“We suck in,” he instructed, and breathed in, and he tried to follow him along. “Hold it.”
Dean puffed his cheeks, and he did the same,
He raised his hand, and showed him his closed fist, counting up to five with it.
“And out,” he exhaled slowly.
He nodded, doing it with him, and Dean smiled softly.
“Again, okay?” he asked.
Jack let him guide him, and finally felt himself a little bit calmer, and rested his cheek on his chest, turning to the side as Dean just continued to rub his back, now slowly.
It was only then that he saw Sam.
He was all dirty, with big red marks on his neck.
Oh no!
He whined, unable to stop himself, and Dean brushed his hair back.
“Hey,” he called softly, making him look at him. “You’re scared for Sammy, that is it? He’s okay, it was just a scare. Sammy is a big boy.”
He nodded to himself. Alright, okay.
Yes, he was alright.
Sam was super strong. Well, not as strong as Cas, but still really strong!
He almost dozed off into Dean’s chest - the car was moving so nicely, and the noise felt good. But Jack woke up when they reached the motel, and he adjusted him in his arms.
“Okay, Jack,” he squeezed him a little, opening the door of the car. “Let’s get you cleaned up, uh?”
“I do it,” Castiel spoke before Dean could step out, and he turned to see him standing outside.
He felt him stopping.
“Are you sure?” he asked. “I mean, he’s like… he is a kid, we should-”
“He is my son, Dean,” Castiel interrupted him, firmly.
Jack turned to look at him, and stretched his arms to him, and put his head on his shoulder when his father picked him up.
Cas easily graced all the mud and blood away from him, but he put some warm water to place Jack in the tub, and knelt in front of him to scrub him clean.
He just wished they had some bath toys. The water felt so boring.
"Jack?" he called softly, rubbing soap on his arms and shoulders, to clean him. "Do you know who I am?"
He looked up and smiled. Of course he knew!
"Papa!" he cooed.
Castiel relaxed, his shoulders dropping a little as he relaxed.
“Yes, sweet boy,” he scrubbed his neck. “Do you know how this happened?"
Oh.
They didn’t know that it was Jack who had done this.
They probably thought it was the witch.
The witch who had been trying to hurt his dad, and then he-
"I hurt that lady," he realised, pouting and running his hand through the water while Cas ran shampoo through his hair.
"You were protecting Sam," Cas corrected him, and covered his eyes with a clean hand as he rinsed it off.
Still, Jack continued to pout.
"I don’t like hurting people..." he confessed.
Even if it was to protect other people.
Castiel sighed and looked at him, sad.
"I know, and you shouldn’t have to," he caressed his hair. "You seem to be all clean, are you ready to come out?"
Jack nodded. He usually liked bath time at the bunker, but there were no bubbles he could make and no toys he could play with, so he just let papa lift him up and bundle him in a towel.
When they walked into their room, seeing Dean walk past them, he raised his eyes to find Sam there in front of a mirror.
"Sam,” Cas squeezed him close. “Let me heal you.”
He shook his head, looking at them.
"No, no, Cas, you’ve used up a lot of grace,” he waved a hand to him, not even looking in his direction. “It’s just the skin, don’t worry."
When he turned around, his face softened the moment Sam saw him.
"Hey buddy,” he walked to him, and tickled his belly, making him giggle. “Your dad got you all cleaned up, uh?”
“He is not a muddy boy anymore,” Castiel joked.
Sam smiled and touched his face, hand looking huge.
"Well, it looks like Jack's clothes shrunk with him, but they’re all pretty dirty,” he told his papa and then looked at him. “So your tighty whiteys will have to do, little man, and you can borrow one of Dean's shirts."
He giggled.
Tighty whiteys.
He was still laughing about it as Sam pulled a Metallica shirt over him, covering him up like a dress - though Jack didn’t quite care - and jumped at the fluffy motel carpet when his feet touched it.
So fluffy!
“Are you sure he should be barefoot on this carpet?” Castiel asked, eyes focused on it as if he could see every stain down the molecular level. “It’s so dirty.”
Jack giggled.
Molecular.
That was a funny word too.
“Well, his socks are all caked with mud,” Sam remarked. “Plus, kids build up immunity. He’ll be alright.”
Jack fell seated, and then slapped the carpet.
Fluffy fluff.
“I didn’t hear the witch say anything before she died,” he told them, sounding more serious. “Are you sure it’s a curse?
“What else could it be?” Castiel asked back, and Sam sighed.
“We shouldn’t have gone on this hunt,” he pinched the bridge of his nose. “But it’s what we do, right?”
The two exchanged looks, and his Papa tilted his head, looking sad and unsure.
“Does it always have to be?”
The question hung in the air before the bathroom door opened, and Dean looked over at them.
"Is that my shirt?" Dean suddenly looked at Jack and he smiled, pulling his legs under it.
"He needed clothes," Sam said simply, walking into the bathroom and closing the door.
He was so tall.
Dean sighed
"That was the only shirt I packed," he huffed, but he didn’t seem to care, laying on the bed shirtless.
Oh! The bed!
He stood up and tried to climb up, grabbing the mattress and jumping a little.
He was too little to climb.
“Unkie Dean!” he whined.
Dean chuckled.
“You got it, buddy,” he flipped through the channels. “I believe in you.”
Jack stopped, surprised.
He did?!
“Okie,” he grabbed the mattress, trying his hardest.
“Do you want my help?” papa offered.
He shook his head.
“No, thank you,” he swung his leg up, propping it against the mattress to help him up. “I got it.”
He was able to throw his arms over, but the quilted blanket started to make him slip down just after he grabbed it, and Jack gasped, falling on his butt on the carpet.
“Oh no, poor buddy,” Dean laughed.
He pouted, feeling his lip trembling and about to cry, but suddenly Dean’s arm swung over the side of the bed, and he didn’t seem to notice it, just watching the TV.
This was his chance!
Jack grabbed his arm and used it to climb up right, and almost missed when he helped him move up, pulling his arm back and holding his leg.
“See?” he asked. “I told you that you could do it.”
He squealed, all excited, and jumped on the bed, happy.
“Papa, I did it!”
Castiel walked to him, putting his arm out, looking a little cautious.
"I’m so proud of you, angel," he smiled.
Jack giggled, feeling a little flushed as he fell and sat on the bed.
“Yeah, you are a baby angel, uh?” Dean teased, tickling his belly.
Jack huffed. Baby? He wasn’t a baby!
“I’m not a baby!” he held up his hand. “I’m five! Not a baby!”
Dean just chuckled
“Oh yes you’re right you’re not a little baby with a cute baby face,” he suddenly scooped Jack into his arms, trapping him between his chest, squeezing and tickling him more.
He couldn’t help laughing more.
“Be careful Dean,” Sam called, and he looked over to find him across the room in his pyjamas. “We don’t know if he remembers being potty trained.”
He wanted to frown, but only managed to laugh.
Of course he remembered how to use the potty!
“Daddy!” he called, squirming away from him. “Help!”
Sam hurried over and picked him up, freeing Jack from his brother's tickling fingers.
“You’re safe,” he smiled.
Jack watched his face, finding him a little conflicted, but just cuddled up to him.
“Daddy,” he yawned.
Oh, he was sleepy.
Sam moved to his bed and gave him space to cuddle up to him.
“Don’t think too much about it, Sammy,” Dean yawned. “Tomorrow we’ll get back to the bunker and we’ll figure out what to do.”
Jack squirmed a bit but tried to keep his eyes closed.
His bigger side was worried about what he could say when they got back home. He couldn’t be a baby forever, but he didn’t want to go back to being just Jack.
He relaxed when he felt a hand on his hair, brushing it back, and a kiss on his forehead.
“Sleep well, Jack,” papa’s deep voice soothed him while daddy held him closer. “I’ll watch over you.”
Maybe he could try to stay little for just a little longer.

Three years later, search for life on Mars continues
In the three years since NASA’s Perseverance rover touched down on Mars, the NASA science team has made the daily task of investigating the red planet seem almost mundane.
The rover and its helicopter sidekick Ingenuity have captured stunning images of Mars and collected 23 unique rock core samples along 17 miles of an ancient river delta.
One science team member, University of Cincinnati Associate Professor Andy Czaja, said he sometimes has to remind himself that the project is anything but ordinary.
“This is so cool. I’m exploring another planet,” he said.
Czaja teaches in the Department of Geosciences in UC’s College of Arts and Sciences. He is a paleobiologist and astrobiologist helping NASA look for evidence of ancient life on Mars using a rover outfitted with custom geoscience and imaging tools with three of his UC graduate students, Andrea Corpolongo, Brianna Orrill and Sam Hall.
Three years into the mission, the rover has performed like a champ, he said.
“Perseverance has excelled. It’s been fantastic. It has such capable instrumentation for doing the geology work. It’s able to explore distant objects with its zoom lens cameras and can focus on tiny objects at incredible resolution,” Czaja said.
Along the way, the mission has recorded a number of firsts: first powered flight, first recorded sounds of Mars, the longest autonomous drive (nearly a half-mile) and new discoveries about the planet’s geology, atmosphere and climate.
Czaja was part of the NASA team that decided where on Mars to land the rover. And he remained on the science team that would pore over its daily data and discoveries to decide what the rover should do next.
Among the new discoveries was finding primary igneous rocks in Jezero Crater. These rocks are the hardened result of liquid magma. They offer scientists promising clues about refining the known age of the planet.
Scientists suspect Mars once had long-lived rivers, lakes and streams. Today, water on Mars is found in ice at the poles and trapped below the Martian surface.
Czaja and his student Corpolongo were co-lead authors of a paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, Planets that revealed that Mars also may have had hydrothermal systems based on the hydrated magnesium sulfate the rover identified in the volcanic rocks.
“When those rocks cool off and fracture, they become a habitable environment for life,” Czaja said.
Corpolongo also led a similar research paper in the same journal co-authored by Czaja detailing the results of the rover’s analysis of samples using the SHERLOC deep ultraviolet Raman and fluorescence instrument. Both papers featured contributions from dozens of their fellow NASA researchers on the project.
Samples collected by the rover may finally answer the question about whether we are alone in the universe.
“We have not found any definitive evidence of life in these deposits yet. But if there were fossil microorganisms trapped in the rocks, they would be too small to see with the rover,” Czaja said.
Czaja is hopeful funding will be approved for the anticipated Mars Sample Return mission to retrieve the hermetically sealed titanium tubes scientists have spent three years filling with interesting rock cores.
“These hydrated minerals trap water within themselves and record the history of how and when they formed,” the study said. “Returning samples of these minerals to Earth would allow researchers to explore the history of Mars’ water and climate and possibly evidence of ancient life with the most sensitive instruments possible.”
But that was just the beginning. Perseverance began its deliberate exploration from the floor of the crater to the front of the delta, formed by an ancient river or drainage channel where it encountered sedimentary rocks that often contain trapped minerals and another avenue for evidence of ancient life.
And last year the rover made it to the crater’s margin in what used to be an enormous lake where it is exploring deposits of magnesium carbonate, which can form geologically or biologically from bacteria.
Czaja said the decision to send Perseverance to Jezero Crater appears to be paying off.
“Absolutely. There were other places we could have gone that might have been just as good,” he said. “You won’t know until you explore them all. But Jezero was picked for good reason and it has been completely justified.”
The helicopter Ingenuity’s flying days appear to be over after it sustained rotor damage in January after landing on its 72nd flight. But Perseverance is still going strong. It still has 15 sample tubes at its disposal to capture additional interesting geologic specimens.
Next the rover will make its way out of Jezero Crater to explore the wider area. Czaja said they are likely to find rocks dating back 4 billion years or more. And Mars could harbor stromatolites or rocks that contain evidence of ancient layered mats of bacteria visible to the naked eye. On Earth, these rocks are sometimes found in extreme environments such as geyser basins.
The horizon of discovery continues to expand daily before the science team.
“I hope that Perseverance has just whetted our appetite for more Martian exploration,” Czaja said. “And bringing back samples will allow us to study Mars and search for evidence of ancient life with instruments that haven’t even been invented yet for years and years to come.”

Transformation/spook AU (whatever you end up calling this) anon:
(this IS getting longer each time lol. thank god there's no ask character limit anymore?) yes to basically all of that, though.
honestly the group being regarded as a threat is par for course. (like, Danny was basically a public menace for a while even when he was trying to help, and even after he got more approval people were still wary of him.)
I like that all of them get their kinda community-specific side friends though. It really is nice to see them getting and making more friends outside of their usual circle. Tucker being a werewolf means his instinct is that he needs a pack, and yes Danny and co are his pack, but naturally I think he would also gravitate toward other werewolves, and they'd be his pack too, so de definitely has two or three close packmates that help him along in his adventures in integrating into werewolf society and also punching out bad guys (honestly? let's do more crossover stuff. Teen Wolf canon characters like Isaac or something!) and just kinda sympatyhize with him. I like the idea that at least one is his cousin, and a thought just popped up that one of them would also be Wulf's descendant (I'm imagining a latino/spanish kid, because of Wulf's Esperanto), and maybe the last one would just be some random (in the case that there's an xover, like I mentioned earlier, probably Isaac or a different one-off TW character).
Sam getting the animal companion though and basically talking to animals like a disney princess... she loves the ability, hates that she's like a disney princess now lol. And a "typical mermaid princess friend" actually makes me think it's basically mermaid Paulina, and Sam is both reluctantly her friend but also eventually grateful for it because it helped her grow past her prejudices against the other A-Lister girls when she learns how to see past mermaid friend's girliness too. I imagine this friendship happened because this mermaid cottoned on to the fact that Sam would become royalty soon (early on when she was just accepted into the clan and not really part of it or a leader in it yet) and decided she was both a good leader to follow (thus becoming a loyal friend too even if she was a princessy type Sam typically didn't hang out with) so she kinda just decided to help Sam learn the ropes and pull off whatever lake-saving shenanigans Sam gets up to every week and eventually they just become close. (H2O has a theme of sisterhood so I can imagine this happens very sweetly. There's also a theme of trios so there's probably another mermaid in on these shenanigans too.) That said, there's definitely probably an "episode" where the mermaids learn the spell to become temporarily human and do so and come to school for a while and are totally awed and naive about human culture and Sam has to spend the entire time trying to corral them into order and keep suspicion off them--and stop them from getting wet or saying weird stuff that would reveal themselves or her to the whole school.
I agree with the Spike headcanon, and I saw a few fics were she was friends with one of the other Weston brothers (which one would depend on the fic), but yeah aside from having very few human friends, Jazz probably also has the smallest other-friend-group because of her feared-and-disliked status. I can maybe see her showing compassion to a brownie or something and them becoming another sidekick-type friend, but yeah I don't think the other fae get close enough to her to befriend her. I do like the idea of her genuinely befriending Johnny and Kitty and maybe Ember though. (Meanwhile, Danny's other-friend-group definitely includes Dora and Sidney bc I hc that Sidney and Danny would become better friends after working out their differences, and occasionally Johnny because they seemed friendly in a couple of episodes. I can see him befriending Ember too. Just give Danny all the teen ghosts as friends ok.)
But yes I totally agree to Val being a forerunner superhero like Bats and Supes and eventually getting recruited by a superhero team. But like the others' communities not really interacting with each other except the occasional crossover, I don't really see Danny and co crossing over to Val's "community" either mostly because they ARE all busy with their own responsibilities. Aside from the "Batman doesn't want to recruit Danny because of his bad press" thing (which, legit, but I think at this point it's been years and Danny has proven to be more good than not, and besides Danny isn't the only hero with bad press so I don't think it'd matter much to Batman), Danny is on his way to becoming king, or learning to be one, or has already become king and is now having to deal with all the responsibilities that come with that, including taking time to study law and meet people and in general split his time between the GZ and AP. Sam is trying to save Lake Eerie from pollution and overfishing/hunting and the occasional ghost sea monster haunting them and other stuff, and helping rebuild the mermaid clan (which btw I think is less of a royalty thing and more of a chieftain thing? I feel like since it's such a small clan it's not really a kingdom so much as it is a tribe, so Chief might fit better than Queen for Sam's upcoming leadership role in this case) and in general mermaids like to keep secret, so I don't think Sam would opt to join Valerie in joining a superhero group to help them stay secret even if she could pass off her powers as a meta or mutant thing (though yes, maybe there CAN be the occasional crossover where she can meet Aquaman, should the situation require Val to call in some aquatic help). Tucker's responsibilities seem very local, and though I'm sure he'd be stoked and excited to join a superhero team, similar to Sam I can see his pack being like "no please don't, you joining will have consequences for ALL of us" so he has to consider that (especially since it's his family, not just other random werewolves, asking). I don't think Jazz would be interested in general (except for maybe becoming a superhero therapist), though Ellie might be (though she seems more interested in just travels than having responsibilities--also I love the idea that "no one is sure she exists" is the reason she's not really known to any community except the Spooks lol). So I like the idea of, if Valerie does take on the "protect humans from human crimes" role, it's something that's just for her for the most part and not quite the "package deal" that you might be thinking. She gets to have all the cool "stop alien invasions and international crime syndicates" adventures, and when she needs the occasional help from her friends, she can ask for it (similar to everyone else in the group asking for help when they need it too). It's kinda like Batman having sidekicks but they're not really seen as part of the Justice League, they're Batman's people who help him. The Spooks are Valerie's people who help her. Yknow? (but yes, when her friends DO get involved, they do write off their powers as meta/alien things.)
But yeah, Val being part of the Science Gone Wrong Crew. They can be part of her other-friend-group, but I especially imagine her being close friends with Blue Beetle and Cyborg? Just, yknow, similar circumstances. One is a superhero via a parasitic creature thing, and the other is a superhero by technology like her. She's in between!
Also, Wes being an alien is hilarious. Would he even KNOW? I love the idea that he would think he's human, all the way up until, idk, he completes human puberty and then has a sudden transformation and learns he's an alien because he's now starting alien puberty lol. I like the idea that he had an ancestor/parent that was an alien like that one person mentioned in the comments (it would really match up with the fact that the rest of the Spooks are half-human in some way too). Imagine the freak out. He would have A Journey emotionally and mentally trying to figure that out and accept that, and FINALLY realize why trying to out Danny and co is a horrible idea because now he's in the same situation where if he's outed Bad Things TM will happen. To him. He only half-heartedly continues accusing Danny and co to not seem off, but he's slowly letting it die down to make it seem like he's naturally giving up at least. The accusation that he's an alien, while frustrating that everyone believes without much convincing, would give him such a panic attack as he realizes the consequences of what would have happened had everyone actually believed him about Danny, because now he's worried about some government coming to kidnap him and put him in Area 51. Like yeah everyone's chill and won't turn him in, but the worry is still there because he has no assurance of this. I think this would be a natural starting point for him to join the Spooks--he goes to them for help about what to do about it and maybe someone to sympathize with him (Tucker being born as he is and gaining his own teenage transformation earlier that year means he's the most likely to empathize!) and also maybe get some help in case some government guys do tote him away, but of course this is after he apologizes.
Of course they do help him out. Danny suggests he uses his Cassandra powers to just tell everyone the truth and then no one would believe it anymore. Wes is just "that seriously won't work" and Danny replies "worked when I tricked you into doing it about me" so the next time someone cracks a joke/accuses Wes of being an alien, he goes full conspirator mode and says "actually I did some digging into my family history and I think I might be! Guys I totally might be an alien! Here's point A and point B, and how I connected them, and I have a whole powerpoint on it!" and. it. WORKS. Wes is so astonished that the immediate response is "oh ha ha, Weston, real funny, that rumor is last week's news, get some new material" or something. Wes wants to slam his head into the lockers, like "WTF WHY DID THAT WORK" and then starts down the rabbit hole of ACTUALLY trying to research his family/alien lineage to try and find out if it's a power his other-half species is supposed to have. (It doesn't. It's just a coincidence. It's funny to think about Wes spiraling like that though.)
But yeah I love this. Having an alien in the group. Wes doesn't seem to have any particular responsibility or have a penchant for fighting, and I feel like since he's the late-addition and not a close friend like the tight-knit group seems to be, that's fine that he's the odd man out. His responsibility can be helping everyone cover their absences/weirdness and be alibis lol. (Wes is not one of those friends who would step in front of a splash for Sam, or stand in front of a bush so Danny can transform with slightly more cover, or etc. But that's only yet. He reluctantly goes "uhg, fine!" and does it, and eventually he'll just do it automatically. Especially after they've started covering for his oddities too--only seemed right to return the favor.) Also given his drive for investigative journalism, maybe he's their go-to guy for general researchy things.
Honestly I would love to see sketches or anything of this whole AU/XOver thing. I feel like if it were a real giant collaboration there'd need to be a discord or something to coordinate lol. Or an AO3 group? However that'll work. If you do plan on writing any side of this AU tho do post it! I will be happy to give more ideas and stuff :D
the wariness will definitely be something they will always deal with, even once they're known as members of the justice league. there's just a darker edge to them and their past. and even if they establish a place in their individual societies, they still started as outsiders. they still associate with the other.
i ironically don't actually know teen wolf that well so doing that crossover myself is a bit tricky for me. but i don't mind a cameo. for tucker i was imagining a female cousin around his age and maybe a sorta little brother type cousin. like he's young and hasn't changed yet but knows about being werewolves and stuff and really wanting to be included in their adventures even though he's baby. i am all for a latino descendant of wulf and them definitely having a family reunion at some point. i also wouldn't mind having another girl who can kick his ass when he acts stupid. i think there's actually a pattern of toxic masculinity in werewolf media, sometimes as a criticism of it, but i want some strong ladies. my brain now jumped to ginger snaps, but those were a darker breed of werewolf than i really want. idk. we should also probably think of names for everyone. but i'll probably have and easier time naming them when i sketch them.
the main crew are definitely tucker’s official pack though, much to everyone else's confusion. you also made me think that tucker will have complaints about how everyone smells. danny smells like ozone and death, sam like fish, jazz like flowers but specifically in a way that makes him sneeze. he doesn't smell great either to be fair. but it is an ongoing thing. the main irony being that when he goes and hangs out with other werewolves, he smells like his friends, so he stinks to them. i think the fact that his official pack isn't wolves is one of the things that makes him weird for the wolves. they might be tolerant of other monsters but you don't just go and pack bond with them. keep your pack among the wolves. that kinda thing.
sam isn't complaining about her powers really. she loves purification magic and being able to talk to fish and work with underwater plants. she just is annoyed that being a mermaid doesn't fit her aesthetic. that she's suddenly spending all her time on the beach or underwater. that she's at risk of getting a tan. that her weaknesses are much more prominent on land than her strengths and that she sometimes ends up holding her friends back when they suddenly have to deal with her having a tail. i think at some point danny and tucker get her a tricked out wheel chair. explaining why she needs one is tricky, they've never been the best liars, but shenanigans can be had with it.
i was actually imagining the mermaid princess to be more like yue from atla than paulina. that might make her a bit to similar to dora. but again i see her having a core of strength and being incredibly regal and capable when the moment calls for it. i don't think she'd be as naive as dora. i see her as a very strong character but one who embraces and uses her femininity in a way that sam doesn't. sam might be for feminism but she tends to look down on girls who like make up and being pretty. paulina to an extent is pretty shallow but sam isn't exactly that deep herself. she could afford to be less antagonistic to the other girls in her life. so the princess character, i'm thinking merrin as her name, would be more mature than either of them. she matured under the responsibility and pressure she's under and really came to own how she presented herself. so she might look like a Paulina or Ariel on the surface, but underneath that is an iron spine and a terrible amount of frustration.
i think their friendship would be mutually beneficial. merrin might go into their friendship initially manipulative, because she recognized sam's potential to be a leader and thought she could get a break. so she would be subtly pushing sam into the roll in public and teaching her politics on the way. and that would make their relationship more contentious in the beginning. but gradually, as they get closer and merrin has more opportunity to loosen up, it becomes more apparent that the mermaid has a lot to complain about and they have fun bitching about things. sam's helps merrin work out her frustration and just have a life outside her duty. sam meanwhile is maturing about her female relationships, seeing the value of femininity. she's also using what she learns about politics to get her way more on land. passing laws that protect ghosts and animals and the lake.
you're right about them needing to be a trio, though i would argue the fish companion could count as their third depending on how smart we make them. but i suppose we could have another character. i think i mentioned a merman who is considerably smaller than sam but who's flirting with her a lot. he might learn to respect her and get humbled and more helpful as the story progresses though. like character development. he's also really scared of danny, who is not only huge compared to him but also a bloody ghost. wtf. for some reason i'm inclined to call him hector.
either way i'm down with the absolute shenanigans of the mers getting on land and running around amity causing their own brand of chaos and also encountering ghosts and seeing why sam is 'like that'. just having them in the school would be wild. the populars would immediately try to latch on to merrin because she's beautiful and elegant and mature. but she's also taking the opportunity to be immature and messy since none of her subject can see her here. so she's going to say some mean stuff and feel incredibly proud of herself.
aside, mermaids are also known for singing. so i think it would be interesting to have her accidentally pull siren shit on land. i'm debating if singing should be one of sam's powers. it might be one, but she refuses to use that power because her voice doesn't suit the kind of music she likes. she wants to sing metal or punk and she has a voice for choir. i'm also going to go with the head canon that danny can sing well and that ends up being some common ground between him and merrin. danny accidentally getting pulled into a siren trio with ember and merrin. sam and tucker having to break them up, because while they're having fun, they're getting out of control. i don't think either danny or merrin set out to hurt anyone but sometimes you join an accapella group and things happen.
i like spike, a lot. i'm a punk so having characters i con project onto is fun. i'm less inclined to give jazz another side kick though. i could see her maybe almost making friends with a brownie, and it following her home to help clean and take care of it, as brownies do. only for it to be chased out within the day by the pure chaos of the fenton security system. she was so close and yet so far. on the other hand keeping with the theme of jazz making friends with people (and creatures) aesthetically darker than her. i could see her accidentally befriending a dark sithe. a member of the court of shadows. like someone genuinely kinda evil, and who assumes jazz is also more evil than she is based on her power level. they don't help her reputation among the fae. misunderstandings ensue and yet jazz still manages to keep her head and be manipulative enough to escape unharmed from the sithe's manipulations and possible attempts to literally kill her. now i'm imagining jazz somehow inherited jack's oblivious plot armor. where she's naive and friendly enough, to just duck at the right times and dodge all shots accidentally. doyle is loosing their mind. i'm going to call the dark sithe Pantera after my black cat.
i could also see her befriending a pooka. i could see them as a mute character that usually only she can see. for shenanigans. she's not as close with them, but they're one of the nicer fae she's in contact with. the pooka also likes to play pranks and tease people, often invisibly behind their back when only jazz can see them. they go out of their way to make jazz laugh. they're going to be named harvey and are a giant rabbit, because references.
and yep, at this point, danny has been a halfa and hero for more than a year. he's teamed up with his share of ghosts over that year and has a lot of contacts and friends within the ghost zone. i could see him having another episode with sidney where they end up actual friends. now i kinda want sidney to reveal some hidden useful skill that everyone, especially his bullies missed. danny seeing past the nerdiness to the brave and plucky kid the sidney really is and they form a genuine friendship. bonus, danny getting a bit nerdier through proximity and tanking his own reputation in the process. dora probably doesn't leave the zone as often now that she's queen. but they remain good friends. amorpho, wulf, and cujo also count as good friends. i am into danny getting close with kitty, johnny, and ember though. i think it starts with him giving a bit of grown and letting them out of the zone so long as they don't hurt anyone. could also see them sharing music. danny learning the music from the time they died, vs the music he likes now. they're all kinda edgey just in different ways. i also want the punk ghost trio to be a bad influence on him, but in a fun way. because lets be real, danny has gotten really stuck in the goody two shoes act since dan. letting him have some fun and be a bad boy is totally valid as far as i'm concerned. also i just want him riding a motorcycle.
you've made a good point about keeping the human heroes as mainly val's thing. it's much more balance. i might have jumped the gun because, obviously, i'm a superhero nerd. you're right about everyone being busy as hell. i like chief sam but also like sam being a princess just aesthetically. she is going have to build her kingdom, and work mainly in the water though. danny becoming king is happening so he might also be getting training for that at this point, possibly via clockwork shenanigans which takes him all over creation. i know you said tucker is more local but i'm actually going to say that while the werewolf community is relatively small, they move around a lot. the have established territories but they can be pretty freaking big and they travel a lot within them. so tucker leaving town to interact with his family and settle things within the larger territory. which would also give him a larger opportunity to deal with other monsters. he's still the team tech guy though. probably doing some man in the chair stuff. you're right about jazz minding her business. she has school.
but yeah having them be her people and occasional come on missions especially when it concerns their 'thing' such as a rogue vampire or killer whale. val just being able to say i have a guy for that. and having this smug look. in part because she kinda has a guy for everything. her friends are freaking versatile.
aquaman: i can't settle issues in the great lakes because it's technically not my domain and it would anger the mers there. val: oh don't worry i know someone
some of the heroes do end up wondering why her friends aren't part of the league, but they have a life. i think there's a bit of irony in she almost never summons phantom to handle ghost problems because she can handle most ghosts, so the supers probably don't even know she's friends with phantom now. it would have to be a big world threat to bring him in and it would probably blow some minds. in the mean time, any of her other friends showing up, they leave quite an impression for how little they're actually around.
i also think batman goes down a rabbit whole researching her and her friends. initially it looks simple for jazz. ghosts are kinda while but he gets protecting your town from the threat. and her civilian live isn't overly complicated. she was a nice girl who's dad lost his money due to a ghost attack and she ended up taking up ghost hunting on top of a fast food job. she's pretty much a normal person as far as heroes go. but then he looks into her friends. and everyone has a secret life and just keeps getting wilder the further he looks because they're all chaotic and involved in things all over the place. danny is doing stuff all throughout time. that might actually mean batman doesn't put together fenton is phantom. maybe he just assumes phantom is his ancestor, and that's why they look alike. the lab accident and the ghost hunter parents is weird enough though....
actually! batman figuring out that the lab accident gave dany ghost powers but not putting together he's phantom. batman inviting fenton to be a superhero and put his powers to good use, unaware that danny is already a very busy hero. danny being too dumb to refuse because joining the justice league would be so cool. danny having to train his ghost powers in human form and getting a new suit and secret identity. val having to cover for him and finding this entire situation ridiculous. especially because he's going to flunk out of school at this point.
danny: do i need to graduate when i'm going to be king val: no one wants a high school dropout to handle politics. danny: the ghost zone begs to differ
it proves unsustainable and Fenton decides to just be her sidekick when he has time, but otherwise sticks in amity.
blue beetle and cyborg are a cool combination for her. not just because they got powers in similar ways, but also because they're all heroes of color. gotta stick together and have each other's back. just in general they have vibes. i also like val being half in love with wonder woman, because same. training with a strong female hero is everything to val. i think we also need a hero good at challenging her and keeping her level. val isn’t perfect and i think it’s be healthy for someone to challenge her decisions and stubbornness. she’s a little too similar to bats for them to disagree enough to be proper foils. i’m kinda torn on having her foil in the league either be flash or superman.
flash would be a good foil because he’s not really the type to punish his villains. he does his best to get to know people and help his villains get help. he’s a lot looser and fun. i imagine his goofy personality would get on vals nerves cause she takes her job very seriously. he’s also the result of a science gone wrong. he might be a little too similar to danny though. and on the one hand that could emphasis certain point and be used for jokes. we all ready have danny serving as a foil so it probably wouldn’t be as effective as it could be.
superman pulling his innocent golden boy thing though has potential though. they are so inherently different and sups is impossible to hate, so i see val struggling with the fact that she isn’t good enough. she’d probably enter a mental compensation with him. to be as good, to be as heroic, as him. and the fact that she’s loosing is driving her up the wall. especially when he comments about how some of her methods aren’t very heroic. she’s a fighter first and foremost. superman has mad a career out of pulling his punches. val has always been fighting extra hard. essentially she’s jealous. had the potential to let her grow in different ways. i think batman would point out that no one can match sups and that she should be herself. but it still niggles at her. sups plays oblivious but i see him knowing and just affectionately teasing her. she gets better about her jealousy. and even becomes a better hero from the prodding, but she has a mild grudge.
wes would get his own fic in this series of his adventures and the first half being devoted to him discovering his powers and facing the consequences of his actions. like the others would be all about exploring their different worlds and going on magical adventures. and then you have wes, going through a rough puberty and realizing he’s been a jerk to the only people who could possibly help him. fantastic. good shit. it’s a who emotional journey probably full of trips and hiccups and backsliding and denial.
bonus points if his older brother, easton, is in the know and trying to help and ease him through it. but wes is having a conniption because he 1. didn’t notice his brother was an alien and 2. his brother didn’t tell him this was going to happen to him. easton points out that it might not have happened. it skips a lot of people in the family line. it skipped kyle.
kyle is going to be positively oblivious in this. he doesn’t believe in anything paranormal. his brother being an alien is out of the question. it’s really a rule fo the funny situation. is he dumb? is he actually totally aware and just committing to a bit? is he just missing everything by sheer coincidence. who knows... but wes hates it.
so there can be some focus on the brotherly relationships. easton trying to be a good big brother but also being the type who explains nothing and who really doesn’t understand his little brother. kyle being affectionate and great but not understanding anything that’s going on. i think he would probably be the type to give good advice anyway. like the situations he’s imagining or even using as reference are totally normal and have nothing to do with the situation at hand, but is still somehow the perfect advice for the situation at hand. like wes ends up getting pulled into one of the superhero situations and meeting other aliens for the first time, and kyle just takes it as, ‘oh you’re meeting knew people? other conspiracy theorist. bro that’s great. here’s how you make friends.” and wes is going on a riff on how he has no idea what species they are or if there’s any sort of grudges or racism between alien races. and kyle is like “oh they’re foreigners? i knew this swedish exchange student. miscommunications happen, but so long as you’re both trying, things will turn out fine, my brother.”
wes is struggling. but so he eventually gets outed as an alien, and has his character development and panic attacks and so on. he’s a fun character because he’s neurotic enough to act in extremes. going into paranoid isolation, looking everywhere for bugs or white vans. and he’d be trying to train his powers as fast as possible so he’d have a way to defend himself.
when he finally goes to the spooks for help they present a united front, that’s both intimidating and pretty gay because none of them know how to sit like a straight person. i don’t have strong feelings on their sexualities, but not straight is a safe assumption. even works in with the history of monsters being used as metaphorical stand ins for lgbtq people. there’s narrative groundwork for it, and also i’m just queer and down for character i like also being queer. anyway, they spend a whole chunk of the night teasing him and making him grovel for all the trouble he gave them. they don’t make it easy for him and force a litteral verbal apology from him.
but they do help him in the end and relax somewhat afterwards. i don’t think they’ll trust him for a while yet.. he burned a lot of bridges and has a bed habit of not respecting boundaries. that would be an ironic way for him to prove useful actually. he’s stupidly good at observation, so he’s usially the first to know when someone’s or something is off. he is actually weirdly attentive and good at sensing mood changes and problems. like it’s still creepy initially. like why do you know how many times i blink dude? but still it proves useful over time.
i could also see wes, having discovered how effective his cassandra powers are, just... telling the truth to cover for them. it’s like, if no one’s going to believe him anyway, he might as well develop the blunted delivery ever and tell people he told them so when they finally catch on.
star: where is val anyway? wes: she joined the justice league and is away on a mission star: hah, yeah right, nerd wes staring into the camera blank faced and soooo tired
the sad thing is he might get in trouble for lying and making up stories. he is the most honest person in amity at this point. pity him.
his adventure mainly involves figuring out his powers, reluctantly getting involved with the spooks, and yes covering for them. he’s neurotic enough that i can see things getting pretty chaotic for him just dealing with his civilian live and being surrounded by so much paranormal stuff. he probably would be motivated to regain some of the friendships he’d ruined by being so obsessive. i could see him trying to regain popularity at some point, trying to escape the conspiracy theorist title.his relationship with his brothers and his improving relationships with the others can also be it’s own thing. now i’m imagining wes getting pulled on random adventured into the others lives (because no one else was available) and realizing he’s in way over his head. there are also several solid moments of “i could have died. i could have died so many times.” lets be real, if his friends weren’t heroes, they could all individually one shot him out of existence. that realization is only starting to sink in.
he eventually settles in the man in a chair role. tucker had started there, and then later jazz. they all have their techniques and such. tucker covering tech and hacking, jazz mental resources and emotional well being, and wes research has it’s benefits. but i could also see some initial tension. mainly because tucker doesn’t want wes reading his files.or messing up his desk set up.
i’d like for wes to eventually find his place with them, despite the rocky start. val would eventually start introducing him to the aliens in the league and they’d start trying to determine where he’s from and they can eventually have adventures with that. but for the time being, wes is his own worse enemy. he is his own antagonist and honestly that’s valid and relatable of him.
i don’t know if these posts have enough traction yet to produce a fic series and i don’t really want to put the leg work in for that. but i ma having fun just brainstorming with you, so lets roll with that. - Hestia

States in the MCU AU
By the way I made this over a year ago and some of it is from a few months ago.
So I have this MCU state headcanon for the states particularly for New York because honestly let's face it he's the one that is literally the most involved in the MCU more than any other state I know there are other states in MCU and obviously, America exist and all the states exist but they're not really a relevant  anyway
New York is very pissed off at DC and GOV
Because of the whole bombing of New York City thing in 2012 during the battle of New York also has PTSD because of the battle of New York he says it was worse than 911
But he's actually pretty sure that the bad at the final battle with Thanos is the worst of it all that's because there's a giant crater in the middle of New York
During World War II all the states have actually met Steve Rogers and when he went into the ice New York couldn't accept the fact that Steve was considered gone until 2012 when he finally decided that he would just give up and accept it but then shield found Steve Rogers in the ice and filed him out
OK this second has nothing to do with the statehouse is it has more to do with  the MCU
So in endgame pepper and Tony are in somewhere in upstate New York or in somewhere in New York and not in the city and I would like to believe that they live at one of the finger Lakes or up in the Adirondack Mountains near one of the lakes up there
I would like to believe that is actually Lake George
OK so back to the state MCU Headcanon
New York is very grateful for the Avengers actually all the states are
All the states are actually huge fans of Captain America
George's favorite avenger is falcon/Captain America
They are fucking hate John Walker
New York Massachusetts Connecticut California Florida Texas are very pissed off at GOV.  For trying to fucking replace Captain America. New York yelled at GOV
I "this is for New York said and I quote" Oh my fucking God how dare you this kid is an asshole did you see the way he killed that guy.
he doesn't deserve to be Captain America. how dare you replace captain America who cares of the fucking country needs to help Sam motherfucking Wilson decided to put the shield in the museum and what are you do you take it out can you give it to this John Walker kid!!!!!! Why New York is yelling at DC/GOV California and Texas are trying to hold New York down
All 50 states and the five territories went to Tony's funeral
Cali was crying the whole damn time but not as much as New York.
Tonys funeral is the one time New York didn't hold back tears.
DC/Gov had a monument made for Tony.
It's a statue of Tony with a plaque that says "Earths mightiest hero." The statue is in Washington DC and in New YorkAnd there are a whole bunch of statues of Tony all over New York state mainly in the cities so Albany, New York city ,Rochester and Buffalo,Syracuse but the grand one is in New York City,
New York knows about Steve going back to Peggy and he approved of it.
New York regularly visits the captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian never mind him of Steve. When he's missing Steve he goes . ( he's learning to deal with his emotions in a more healthy way.)
Cali also has statues of Tony all over the state
Georgia loves falcon love Sam Wilson and he is glad Steve chose him as the new captain America and fuck John Walker
(Unlike Georgia I still say should've been Bucky it was in the comics he got the shield first) sorry about my little tangent there
Cali's favorite avenger is Black widow.
sorry that it was mostly New York I'm kind of biased because I live in New York state I know this fandom knows that New York is more than just a city and Tony died in New York so yeah and steps from New York so yeah
All the states hate John Walker and Gov likes John walker
New Mexico's favorite avenger is Thor we all know why
Jersey felt weird when Wanda made her little world thing to bring back vision escapism at it's best
And was more against himself than usual Hi let's do this
Steve and New York had a moment before Steve went back in time
New York:Steve you sure about this.
Steve: yes just keep an eye Buck for me and the kid.
New York: you know I will.Go to your soulmate.
And then they hugged. Steve went back in time returned all the stones went to live with Peggy
Tony left three final Messages one for the avengers and the rest of the world and one for the states and one specifically for New York and California and Tennessee.
Tonys Death Really Took a toll on New York's mental health but Cali was there for him.
For New York it just makes it worse that he's a state that Tony died in
Florida he is very sad about Tony death mainly because it's just sad that Tony had a little girl he won't be able to watch her grow up
They all know Peter's identity but they're not going to tell the world because they're in mortal and they're basically God's.
Texas has mad respect for The original six
Utah favorite avenger is Hawkeye because Hawkeye is a family man and Utah is a family Man.
Jersey was sick when Wanda was making her own hex thingy and he actually saw everything that was going on and the fact that he had national guard every organization in America and the FBI CIA all that the army.
—————————————————————-—
Outside MCU
New York about Florida and California: what the hell is wrong with you guys.
Cali: what do you mean.
New York: this marvel shows and all the mental health issues I mean first WandaVision and how Americans use sitcom's to escape reality.
Mass: yeah falcon winter soldier with the veterans and the fact that Bucky literally went to therapy.
Connecticut: Loki with the infirmary complex and probably your child abandonment issues and his daddy issues.
I was crying when I was making this.
Here’s some incorrect quotes
Florida: it's got to be part of The big three
Georgia: what big three
Florida: The big three
Georgia there's no big three
Florida :every time the avengers fight they fight one of the big three aliens androids and wizards.
Georgia: Wizards aren't real
Florida :Doctor Strange
Georgia: is a sorcerer
Florida: A saucer is a wizard without a hat
Georgia:
Florida: :D
———————————————————————
Georgia: like I know you miss Steve I am missing two do you have to MoveOn. I also know you miss Tony I think we all do no one's going to replace Tony the worlds greatest hero universe for that matter
New York : it's not as easy as you think.
Georgia: I know buddy Tony wouldn't want you to be sad he would want you to celebrate him he won't want you to be glad that he saved the world and discovered time travel to save the world.(sees New York About to cry)come on bring it in.
New York hugs him: I miss him Geo.
Georgia hugs back :I know Yorke.
Mass looting at Georgia in New York hugging : Man I never seen my little brother cry before.
Florida about to cry: I know it's so sad come on New York you're gonna make me cry[ joins the hug with New York and Georgia]
—-——-
Head canon
For the MCU
OK so during the final battle of Thanos or whatever it's called New York was in pain the whole time but at the same time he felt hole again because the blip made everything feel a little bit less whole
He was in pain it hurts really bad but also he knew it was avengers fighting because the same thing happened five years ago when the aliens invaded earth for the second time but also he was hurt and I have the same thing happened in 2012
he still has scars from it and also he still has scars from 911
It really hurt him so badly
—___________
New Jersey acting weird:do do do do do do WandaVision WandaVision Waba blah blah WandaVision WandaVision looking good and we knew it because Sampson and surprises come and ask you some sizes
California pointing at jersey: is he Ok
New York: probably not
Connecticut: oh no he's definitely not OK he's singing
Mass: since when do either of you care the fuck about jersey
New York: oh we don't care the fuck about the jersey
Connecticut: yeah we're just answering California's fucking question
Mass: yeah but you got a wonder what is going on with him
California: you know what I don't even fucking care anymore I don't even wanna know what's going on with New Jersey no it's not weird enough that you know you know what is normal you know this is normal weird stuff happens all the time I mean first Steve happens when Captain Marvel happens and then Tony because Tony Stark becomes a superhero when we thank God exist and then they find Steve again in ice for 70 years and then aliens attack New York city it couldn't get any weirder I'm over it.
Florida:I think it can't get weird or are we going to question the fact that nobody's fault in The abomination since it happened like what happened to abomination are we just going to nor the fact that Hulk didn't kill the abomination
Gov: yes we are going to ignore that factSpoiler warning for black widow in any of the MCU
Now we all know New York is a broken boy but I feel like in the MCU he's even more broken than he already. And the reasoning for it literally all the bad stuff that happens in New York City do you know the aliens the robots the wizards the big three
And also New York has to deal with the fact I've said this before and I'll say it again he hast to deal with the fact that he is the place where the universes mightiest hero died
In any AU I just feel like Georgia is the one that can get through to New York because Of their friendshipAnd Georgia's ability to communicate very well that's like his superpower also parenting is Georgia is super power
California would also be able to get New York but not as well as Georgia would be able too.
Ohio favorite Avenger is black widow because Natasha lived in Ohio
Florida is not as chaotic as New York is in the MCU I'm sorry but y'all know it's true
All right we're about to get into a serious topic you're not serious topic is hydra a.k.a Nazis
If you've seen Captain America first avenger you know that the first Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division or as we all know it as shield headquarters it's in Jersey which means New Jersey knew that hydrant was invading shield and just didn't tell anyone and so basically when shield was officially taken over by the enemy it's for you noob's is Hydro is the enemy literally the whole country is shunned New Jersey so nobody talk to him for like a year
OK we're going back to New York OK
New York's brother Massachusetts and Connecticut try to comfort him but they're not good and emotions either so they can't really help
Why do I feel like Massachusetts knew about Agatha
All right welcome to whatever this is
Massachusetts is very very very very very very concerned about what is happened to New York
Connecticut is just very worried about his little brother and his mental health but also like he lost half of his own population in the blip.
New Hampshire he's just chilling he's worried a little bit about New York
Vermont is very very very extremely worried about the person who is basically his dad which is New York
New York is worthy of Thors hammer but he doesn't think he's worthy he's kind a like Steve a lot like Steve and also because I said so
Main honestly I don't know what to say about the crap the lobster man he's afraid of the Hulk aren't we all though I mean let's be real here
Delaware very concerned about what happened in Westview New Jersey
Spoilers for Spider-Man no way home
New York still remembers Peter because they're mortal and they don't really get affected by that stuff by magic unless the magic is done by Louisiana or Massachusetts or whatever state knows how to do magic or country for that matter
Bye
Sorry for the bad grammar this is literally with no spellcheck

THE MOBSTER'S INSIDE LIFE
The Explosive, Inside Story of the Mobster Who Controlled America
By Sam and Chuck Giancana
Warner Books. 357 pp. $22.95
With its melange of Mafia history and conspiratorial politics, "Double Cross" has raced up the national bestseller lists, propelled in good part by the movie "JFK," which has helped catapult some half-dozen books purporting to solve the Kennedy assassination onto the lists in recent months.
"Double Cross" is merely the latest, but also the most insidious.
This book solves almost everything.
"Double Cross" tells the tale of onetime Chicago Mafia boss Sam Giancana, and is written by -- or allegedly written by -- his younger brother Chuck (actually his stepbrother, though the book de-emphasizes this) and Chuck's son, also named Sam, who hardly figures in the book.
I say "allegedly" because the book is such an inventive stew of nonsense that I sense the gleeful hand of a ghostwriter.
The code of omerta doesn't run deep in this family.
In 1984, Sam Giancana's daughter, Antoinette, with Thomas Renner, published "Mafia Princess," also a bestseller, about her dad's life.
Tumblr media
All this should serve as a cautionary tale to current and retired Mafia bosses: Spread the wealth among your family unless you want them to take out contracts on you -- book contracts.
"Double Cross" essentially interweaves two narratives.
One is of Chuck's relation -- or non-relation -- to Sam.
Chuck evidently envied, admired, feared and resented him.
Dependent on him for approval and livelihood, Chuck lived much of his life in Sam's shadow, until Chuck finally changed his name to escape the notoriety it brought upon his family and struck out on his own.
Chuck's story is rather depressing.
But sad sack Chuck also claims that "the mobster who controlled America" used him as his confidant, and so now all the dirty secrets can be told (though not verified).
This is the tale of Sam Giancana's criminal empire, built up from his Chicago street gang, the 42s, and integrated into the Al Capone mob.
It's difficult enough for biographers to agree on their facts regarding past presidents.
But when it comes to professional psychopaths like mobsters the task is hopeless.
"Double Cross" takes facts such as the CIA's involvement with Giancana to assassinate Fidel Castro, and Giancana and Jack Kennedy's simultaneous affairs with Judy Campbell, then piles on half-truths, lies, warmed-over gossip and garbled fairy tales.
youtube
Well, then, according to the book, Chuck learned from his brother that Sam was one of the gunmen in the Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929 that established Capone as Chicago's undisputed crime boss; that Giancana knew that Huey Long was assassinated on orders from New York bosses whom he was cheating; that Giancana got the contract to kill Las Vegas casino operator Bugsy Siegel; that the Chicago mob "owned" Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and then Harry Truman, whose career they promoted; that the mob pulled strings to keep crime-buster Sen. Estes Kefauver off the Democratic presidential ticket; that athletes in Giancana's pocket included Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, all of whom used to party in New York mob boss Frank Costello's Washington Hotel suite; that Joe Kennedy was in Giancana's debt from bootlegging days; that Giancana got Costello to cancel a hit on Joe Kennedy and in return Joe swore that when his son Jack became president he would owe Sam a big one; that Costello fed J. Edgar Hoover tips on fixed horse races in return for laying off the mob; that Giancana engineered Vito Genovese's heroin bust, which effectively ended his criminal career; that Giancana partied at the Cal-Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe with Jack Kennedy and assorted prostitutes; that Giancana had sexually compromising pictures, tape recordings and films of Kennedy, but Giancana's CIA friends persuaded him not to use them; that Frank Sinatra, who set up Judy Campbell with both Sam and Kennedy, was Giancana's conduit to the Kennedys; that Giancana got Jimmy Hoffa to skim millions from the Teamsters for Kennedy's campaign; that Chicago Mafia money bought West Virginia and Illinois for Kennedy, crucial for his election to the presidency; that Richard Nixon got Giancana's people highway contracts and helped his man in Texas, Jack Ruby (hullo Jack!), avoid testifying before Congress in 1947; that Sam worked with the CIA to try to assassinate Castro in Cuba, ; that Giancana secured for the CIA the financial services of Michele Sindona, consultant for both the Sicilian Mafia and the Vatican; that the CIA bugged comedian Dan Rowan's home for Giancana, who suspected him of an affair with Giancana's girlfriend, singer Phyllis McGuire; that after his election, Kennedy used Angie Dickinson and Marilyn Monroe to deliver messages to Giancana; but that when the Kennedy brothers double-crossed the Mafia and went after mob figures and Hoffa, then Giancana, who had promoted Monroe's career, had her murdered with a Nembutal suppository to create a scandal that would implicate Bobby Kennedy, then ending an affair with her; and that Giancana conspired with other top Mafia bosses, as well as Hoffa, Vice President Lyndon Johnson, Nixon, top CIA officials, top military officials, top Dallas police officials, top Texas oilmen etc. etc. to assassinate Kennedy, with Ruby serving as Giancana's point man in Dallas; that Giancana later arranged to have Bobby Kennedy assassinated too; that Giancana placed a contract on Hoffa before he himself was murdered in 1975, prior to his scheduled appearance before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; and so on into the long black night.
The only crime this book doesn't solve is the Lindbergh kidnapping. But maybe Giancana's great-great-grand-nephew and second cousin's niece will collaborate to solve that one.
The reviewer, who has written about the Mafia before, is the author of a short-story collection, "The Off-Season."

Log book services are important to maintain the condition of your vehicle. They are a great way to save money on costly repairs in the future, and can also help to preserve your car’s resale value. These services are recommended by the manufacturer, so it’s best to have them done on time to avoid any issues later on.
A basic new car logbook service starts from $209, but varies depending on your manufacturers requirements. You don’t need to go to the dealer to get a log book service, as independent mechanics are authorised to perform them provided specific conditions are met.
Most car logbook services include a comprehensive inspection, which includes checking the fluids and parts of your vehicle. They can spot any minor problems and fix them before they become worse. In addition, they can advise you on the maintenance schedule for your vehicle, so you know when to service it again. This can help to extend the life of your car and reduce the risk of breakdowns in the future.
Engine diagnostics are a key part of car maintenance. They identify underlying issues before they cause costly repairs. These tests can also help improve gas mileage and keep your vehicle in top condition.
Mechanics use engine diagnostics to check for problems in the electrical system, transmission, and other components. These devices connect to the car’s computer and display a code indicating whether or not a problem exists. Mechanics can then use these codes to determine the severity of the issue and estimate how much it will cost to fix it.
Many people think that engine diagnostics are complicated, but they’re actually quite simple. These tools are able to communicate with the car’s computer, which provides them with a complete list of errors. They can also identify parts that are beginning to wear down, which will help prevent future breakdowns. In addition, they can help you save on fuel costs by identifying bad habits like excessive idling.
JAX Tyres & Auto North Lakes provides the best brands, advice and service in a family friendly environment. Sam Murdoch, the owner of this new store north of Brisbane says “We are honest to give everyone a great experience”. He and his team are fully qualified to carry out servicing that will maintain your vehicle warranty.

Today was a heavy lift. We departed prince george bc at eight to fly up the trench route to anchorage. An hour out we were on top of an undercast of solid cloud when both gps systems went off line. We were 250 miles from the next vor and thus out of range. Sam and I got busy and went into dead reckoning mode. The good news was that by 12,000 feet we were able to talk to center and get a weather update for Watson lake and it was low ifr. I found out in Whitehorse that the ATC controller googled the term as he couldn’t remember what it meant! It seemed untenable to continue so we diverted to fort nelson which was sunny and beautiful but very windy. The gps satellites came back to life as we approached fort nelson but we held to plan b and landed for fuel. The briefer thought the next leg to Whitehorse would be ok as a ifr flight so we filed and departed. The flight was two and half hours and the last hour was super high workload. The weather got worse, the clouds rose so we were in solid clouds with moderate turbulence and temperatures minus 12c. Next came ice then came snow then freezing rain which is very very bad.
While the tks system said it was working we we’re definitely picking up frozen snow slash ice. Knowing that the plane will always come down and we were still thirty minutes from Whitehorse I told ATC I was climbing. We leveled out at 16k which was about all the plane was going to do and with temps at -14c the ice stabilized and started to sublimate. I decline ATC suggestions for lower and held altitude until we were only a few miles from the start of the ils approach. We didn’t pick any ice as we shot down to catch the approach at 6500 feet where it was raining hard. We didn’t see the runway lights until we got within a few miles. It was pretty nice to touch down.
We fueled, called the weather briefer reviewed the alternatives and launched vfr to fly north under the weather following the Alaska highway. ATC caught up with us about forty miles out and explained that our flight plan had been rejected by the computer and we needed to climb and go ifr. We discussed the plan in great detail while we zipped along at 170 knots toward the better weather. By the time a comprise plan had been approved we were 100 miles north and in the clear. Our climb to 12k was ice free but we were now obligated to a circuitous route which would tax our fuel reserve. It turns out the Americans didn’t like the flight plan so up to 15k we went which meant I could lean the engine down to 13 gallons per hour so our endurance climbed up to where I want it. The geology is simply stunning. 16k mountains glaciers rivers lakes. Simple awe inspired. Due to our silly height anchorage approach brought us in with the jets as our descent speed was in the 180 plus knots range and we landed on the big runway and taxied to the passenger jet terminal and taxied up to customs jetway to clear customs. Pretty cool. Next we taxied off the airport across a two lane road that had railroad like crossing gates and over to the seaplane base. Crossed multiple roads all with crossing guards and airplane stop lights!
