The Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy 2022 edited by Rebecca Roanhorse (guest) & John Joseph Adams
Tumblr media
4 out of 5 stars.
This is a collection of twenty of the best science fiction and fantasy short stories published in North America during 2021 as selected by guest editor Rebecca Roanhorse, author of "Black Sun", among other books.
A Netgalley ARC provided courtesy of HarperCollins, the scheduled publication date is November 1, 2022.
Contents:
"10 Steps to a Whole New You" by Tonya Liburd "The Pizza Boy" by Meg Elison "If the Martians Have Magic" by P. Djeli Clark "Delete Your First Memory for Free" by Kel Colman "The Red Mother" by Elizabeth Bear "The Cold Calculations" by Aimee Ogden "The Captain and the Quartermaster" by C. L. Clark "Broad Dutty Water: A Sunken Story" by Nalo Hopkinson "I Was a Teenage Space Jockey" by Stephen Graham Jones "Let All the Children Boogie" by Sam J. Miller "Skinder's Veil" by Kelly Link "The Algorithm Will See You Now" by Justin C. Key "The Cloud Lake Unicorn" by Karen Russel "Proof by Induction" by Jose Pablo Iriarte "Colors of the Immortal Palette" by Caroline M. Yoachim "The Future Library" by Peng Shepherd "L'Esprit de L'Escalier" by Catherynne M. Valente "Tripping Through Time" by Rich Larson "The Frankly Impossible Weight of Han" by Maria Dong "Root Rot" by Fargo Tbakhi
A fantastic collection of stories with varying degrees of fantasy and science fiction woven within. The collection, in my opinion, tends to lean more towards fantasy or a mixture of the two rather than pure SF. A couple even have subtle touches of horror elements.
The main focus of all the stories is people, not hardware, not technology, and not magic, although all three do enter into the kickoff of many of the stories. People, as all really good SF and Fantasy should center on, their emotions, their reactions to what is happening, and their interpersonal relationships to others. Some of these stories touched me deeply, one made me cry, and all made me think.
In all honesty, I couldn't pick a favorite. In various ways they all had something important to say, many of them falling under the increasingly popular and widespread environmental science fiction subcategory. Would I recommend this collection and to whom? Yes, most definitely I would to all readers who like thought provoking fiction, no love or even experience with SFF required.

in his name: the heroes
a brief exploration of CE character names and how they match their stories/personalities... or don’t 😗💕
the heroes  ❥ the villains  ❥ the lovers
a/n: finally putting my linguistics degree to good use my frens 😚 i really enjoy sociolinguistics, if i continued w grad ling, i would’ve focused on that i think. i’ve been meaning to make more bulletpoint posts and headcanons bc sometimes!! you're too tired for coherent fic!!
Tumblr media
Andy Barber
ANDY is a diminutive of ANDREW, a given name with Greek roots, Andreia.
Meaning “brave”, “manly”, or “valorous”, fitting for Andy who, in canon, is said to be particularly aggressive and masculine as a result of the warrior gene or a MAO-A variant i mean largely played up for the ✨️drama✨️ but u kno
ironic if you consider how he’s often one step away from being soft dark or full dark bc of his aggressiveness but that's also what's attractive 😬
BARBER is what’s known as an occupational surname, very common English last names. some others are miller, baker, and smith. it’s likely that one of his patrilineal grandfathers was actually a barber
Tumblr media
Ari Levinson
ARI is a Jewish name and is a variant of Arieh. Both mean lion in Hebrew. (Ari is also a given name in Faroese and Icelandic but since he’s canonically Jewish, we’ll skip those explanations)
LEVINSON is a Jewish patronymic last name where it’s a word made up of a personal name + son/daughter of, so Levin + “son”. Jewish surnames have historically used the Hebrew prefix ben (son of) or bat (daughter of-) and then the father’s name. but bc of decrees in the 18th c. german empire, these traditional surnames were changed to be more “european”
given that in canon, he and his mum tried to escape the continent bc of nazi perscution, we can assume that he’s Ashkenazi Jewish by birth and is able to speak Yiddish alongside Hebrew and English. depending on whether his adoptive family was also Jewish or not and whether he was encouraged to keep speaking Yiddish or assimilate would have had effects on his language skills tho 😕 for more angst, apply forced americanization
Tumblr media
Curtis Everett
CURTIS is an English translation of Corteis (Old French) which may sound very similar to “courteous” to you!! hehe that’s bc tho english is a germanic language, it uses dozens of loan words from other languages. so Curtis means “well-bred” or “courteous” stemming from the idea of courtly behavior or etiquette.
the idea of etiquette began snowballing in popularity during the enlightenment when the bourgeoisie adopted upper class manners, aka “polite society” in order to move up in the world. kinda parallel to Curtis' movement from the tail end to the engine
EVERETT is also interesting; originally Everard (Old English), it means “strong/hard as a boar”. boars are notoriously hard to kill and were called "desperate fighters" by the brits that hunted them. special spears had to be made for hunting them whereby the animal would charge and impale itself. i hope bong joonho knows what an apt name it is for our rebellion leader Curtis 💕💕
Tumblr media
Frank Adler
We have some options with FRANK. It could be a name in itself, or a shortened form of Francis and Franklin. histotically, Francis is a shortened version of Franciscus and Francesco which mean “Frenchman” or “free man” in reference to St. Francis of Assisi. Franklin is an English name with roots in Middle English, meaning “landowner of free origin”
ADLER is Middle German, stemming from the term “edler Aar” or “noble eagle” which distinguished eagles from falcons and hawks for hunting.
frankie's just a plain ol boy but he is rather noble like an eagle 🥺
Tumblr media
Steve Rogers
STEVE is diminutive of Steven or Stephen, stemming from Stéphanos (Ancient Greek) meaning “wreath, crown, honor” as well as “to wreathe around”, which in Steve’s case could imply protection 🥺
but this name is also significant bc of its common attribution to Saint Stephen, a disciple of Jesus that was stoned to death and named the first martyr. slightly prophetic of Sarah Rogers ngl 🥲
Sarah may have also called him Stíofán or Steabhán at home (not on the streets bc that’s how you let racist/nationalist ppl know you’re not from here uwu) but she may have also been a part of the generation in Ireland that didnt get to learn or use Irish bc of British control 🤷🏻‍♀️
ROGERS is… complicated in that it could be an English/Norman surname or an Anglicized Irish surname. Rogers in the Norman sense means “son of Roger”. The Normans (aka early French) invaded England in the 11th century and eventually conquered Ireland in the 12th century bringing the name Rogers.
Alternatively, it could be the English version of Mac Ruaidhrí. We don’t know enough about his dad (besides that he was abusive in the og comics) to decide but since the more common Anglicization of Mac Ruaidhrí is McCreary or McCrory, one of Steve’s ancestors might have just taken the English surname.
---
genuinely if you finished this, ty bc this is so niche of an interest 😖💕💕 ily and i'll get the villains out soon 👀

My 2023 reading list
I'm not sure why I'm sharing this. 40 books is more than double my average number for a year, but I don't really believe in book count as a useful stat. I rolled all the fanfic up into one item, but I counted each reread of my daughter's favorite as one 😁
Anathem is starred because it was my favorite, although it's honestly too hard to choose between that and the Silmarillion.
Anyway. I don't know. I just like keeping track.

While testing the latest and greatest airship just above the atmosphere, Major William Allison (Robert Clarke) accidentally travels to the apocalyptic future of… 2024! Little did they know. Beyond the Time Barrier (1960) is a low-budget, sci-fi B-picture from director Edgar G. Ulmer (The Black Cat, 1934; Detour, 1945) and writer Arthur C. Pierce (The Cosmic Man, 1959; The Human Duplicators, 1965). To Chad’s dismay, the plot includes a lot of walking and talking across a set filled with inverted pyramids. Oh, and the mutants… sigh. Check out what the Grue Crew has to say about this B&W, time-travel trainwreck. Also, stick around for the usual batch of feedback from past episodes.
You might also want to check out these Decades of Horror: The Classic Era episodes:
THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMON (1958) – Episode 41: w/Robert Clarke as writer, director, producer, and star
THE BLACK CAT (1934) – Episode 67: directed by Edgar G. Ulmer, starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff
At the time of this writing, Beyond the Time Barrier is available for streaming from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel, Amazon Prime, and Tubi. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber in the Edgar G. Ulmer Sci-Fi Collection, a trio of films that also includes The Man from Planet X (1951) and The Amazing Transparent Man (1960).
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by guest host Michael Zatz, is The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), another silent scream starring Lon Chaney! Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Incidentally, this will be the Classic Era’s tenth discussion of a silent film.
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: leave them a message or leave a comment on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel, the site, or email the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era podcast hosts at [email protected]
To each of you from each of them, “Thank you so much for watching and listening!”
Check out this episode!

And the fields of philosophy, anthropology, and psychology are just the beginning. We could easily go on for dozens, for hundreds, of pages demonstrating how these questions lay at the very center of Western intellectual and cultural life.
We could trace their pathways through numerous Nobel scientists, with physicists showing a particular fondness for the subject. We could then chart a similar lineage through major modern artists, including painters like Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky. The latter’s The Spiritual in Art, for example, is clearly indebted to the “Thought Forms” of Theosophy and the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner.
And this is before we even get to modern literature, with authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Margaret Fuller, Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Victor Hugo, Jules Verne, Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, Lewis Carroll, W. B. Yeats, Henry Miller, Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen King, and Michael Crichton all writing explicitly about their spiritualist, psychical, paranormal, and occult interests and experiences.
Such occult experiences were hardly tangential to such authors. They were integral components of the creative process. Hence Bruce Mills has recently written about the mesmeric and magnetic currents that played such an important role in the creation of a distinctly American literature in the middle of the nineteenth century, and Alex Owen has written about “the symbiotic relationship among vitalism, occultism, and advanced literary ideas” in turn-of-the-century Britain.
The accomplished occultist W. B. Yeats, whose magical name was Demon Est Deus Inversus or “The Devil is God in Reverse” (they just called him “Demon”), might have been an extreme case, but he was hardly alone when he confessed to John O’Leary in a letter that the “mystical life is the centre of all that I do and all that I think and all that I write.”
-- Jeffrey J. Kripal, Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred

10 books to know me📚
Thank you @rays-of-raven for the tag!! I’m also going to ramble and quote some stuff from the books 🥰
1. If We Were Villains by M.L Rio- I dont even remember why I bought this book but all I can say is that it has me in a chokehold. I love it more than anything. Also I’m having a very difficult time picking a single favourite quote, but this is the most relatable one for me.
“For someone who loved words as much as I did, it was amazing how often they failed me.”
2. The perks of being a wallflower by Stephen Chbosky - I borrowed this from my school’s library and I’ve never been the same person since. The movie did the book kinda dirty but I still loved every second of it. I can’t pick one quote so here are my two favourites.
“We accept the love we think we deserve.”
“We are infinite.”
3. The Secret History by Donna Tartt- I have a lot of feelings about this book, mostly positive ones but the incest obviously threw me off a bit. Overall the story was very good and after reading the restaurant scene I could definitely understand why they killed Bunny. Also, again I can’t pick one quote.
“Cubitum eamus?”
“Forgive me for the things I did, but mostly for the ones I did not do.”
4. I’ll give you the sun by Jandy Nelson- I know exactly why I bought this book, I remember watching a vid about it and seeing that there are twins and I’m a twin, so I immediately bought it. This quote represents me and my twin brother pretty well.
“I love you” I say to him, only it comes out as, “hey”
“So damn much” he says back, only it comes out as, “dude.”
5. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller- This book had me crying for hours, im still inconsolable. Can we talk about the fact that Achilles tried to slit his throat after seeing Patroclus’ corpse???
“I am made of memories.”
“What has Hector ever done to me?”
6. The outsiders by S.E Hinton- I actually watched the movie first but god the brainrot immediately made me buy the book.
“Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold.”
“Dally didn’t die a hero. He died violent and young and desperate, just like we all knew he’d die someday.”
7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling- No explanation needed.
“Lupin was lowering his wand. Next moment, he had walked to Black’s side, seized his hand, pulled him to his feet so that Crookshanks fell to the floor, and embraced Black like a brother.”
“I would have died before I betrayed them.”
8. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger- I only bought this book because of an anime I watched and after reading it I definitely understood why that character in the anime loved it. I still associate it with him to this day.
“I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be.”
9. Alas: Apollo and Hyacinthus by Richard C Gray- I was looking for a retelling of their story and coincidentally found this one. Its a really nice and short read.
“To have met you in my mere mortal life has been my privilege but to have been loved by you has become my immortality.”
10. Lottie and Lisa/ Das doppelte Lottchen- It was gifted to me by a friend of my mum, I adore this book. I used to read it every single night before going to sleep. I only have the original/German version so there won’t be a quote.
Hmmm, I think everyone I know has been tagged so far, but there’s one more person I need to do this. @neaverse (no pressure if you don’t want to!!)
