Summers were hot, winters were cold. The house could be warmed with the ample fireplaces, but as it was an old building, the most you had was nature's wind, after your box fan broke that is.

Thankfully, the houses old wooden floors were delightfully chilly, especially with how the house's foundation was raised off the ground, allowing cool wind to blow under it, raising into the wooden floors you could feel chilling your very bones as you lay where you are.

It was later in the evening, and the entry way was a vast space, with a spiralling staircase, archways directing to different rooms, and a hall connecting to the downstairs fireplace. But the entryway was vast and blissfully cool.

Once you'd rolled the rug out of the way and laid on the floor, you could only let out a relieved sigh. Feeling the cool wood, the scent of varnish, the faintest breeze. Did you open the window? You probably opened the window.

Regardless, after an exhausting and hot day, laying on the cool floors was exactly what eased the heated flush you felt covering your body.

With closed eyes and quiet sighs, you laid there for some time. Plotting plans for tomorrow, maybe you'd finally find the key for that door that never seemed to open. You'd been searching for that since day one.

Your mind drifts and wanders, slowing and muddling into a drowsy haze. You have a brief thought flash through your mind, 'if I sleep here, I sleep here.'

And then you feel the most comforting cool breeze, soothing the searing heat on your face. The gentlest caress, stroking your cheek.

You let out a soft mumble, turning your head, leaning into the comforting feeling, wanting to chase it without hesitation or fear in your blissfully hazy state.

Your efforts are rewarded, the touch seems more real in a sense. As if someone is cupping your face as lovingly as one possibly could. There's a moment of silence, a subtle buzz in the air, like static in a different room yet right beside you.

This continues, the gentle touch helping soothe and cool you, yet curious, as if mapping out your features. You let out a sigh, falling into a bone deep state of rest. The feeling of sleep blanketing over your mind and body in a way you've never felt before, not unlike when another can gift you the greatest comfort and safety, allowing your body to rest without fear or caution.

And you feel the tender press of cold lips against the crown of your head. The touch frozen and remaining for many moments, as if unaware or perhaps not ready to yet pull away, the touch relaxes for a moment, simply remaining pressed so softly to your skin.

And you fall asleep.

The next morning, you wake in your bed, groggy and bundled under the sheets, curtains drawn, door closed. The way you arrange it every night... You must have gotten up and brought yourself to your room two stories up. You must have... What else could it have been?
