This final selection from sketchbook 5 (Silence =Death) is a selection of images to do with planning a set of photographs to do with ideas around skinhead imagery. I understood skinhead as to do with the Specials and the Beat and the anti-racist music of two tone I was listening to. Very many of the marchers against the BNP in London had been left wing skinheads. Stoke though has its fair share of nazi skins, (boneheads as they were known). The planning was to do with queering the machismo of the image as a symbol for groups rather than couples which was suggestive of an undercurrent of male sexuality underneath the boots and braces and led to a reasonably successful photo shoot. The planning drawings were clumsy but served their purpose. Obviously the context of the bulk of my work couched these in not just subverting the skinhead symbol as queer but also subverting as many religious images as I could think of. I was pissed off with the political and religious right and wanted to cannibalise the meat of their flesh to feed my images. #sketchbook #archive #queerartist #queerart #queerskin #drawing #jarman #artdegree #artstudent #liverpoolartist (at Stoke-on-Trent) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWI5M3esNyr/?utm_medium=tumblr

In my life, the thing I have most consistently called myself is Artist. I even went to school and got a piece of paper saying I have been educated in the ways of drawing. Since graduating I have struggled with creating regularly. The stress, concerns, and obligations of adulthood have strapped my energy and drained my creativity. But the desire is still there. When I visualize what I want the future to look like, it involves an airy art studio and an art show. All this is to say, I am an artist dealing with artist’s block and a fear of success. I fear that I do not deserve to turn my art into a livelihood. I’m afraid that there are other people who are more deserving any opportunity I might seize - which is silly because me holding myself back isn’t helping anyone. I fear that I have not “suffered” enough to be an artist - which is dumb because most artist’s we associate with being “tortured” did their best work while getting the mental help they needed (Van Gogh, Edvard Munch). Besides, in society adulthood is discussed as being all about having a steady job, benefits, and a 401k - not living month to month with a highly irregular pay stream. I am working on changing these ingrained attitudes. I am working on expanding my creativity skill sets so I can create in different ways (embroidery, getting back into painting, etc). Someday I’m sure I’ll look back in this period of my life and laugh at myself for taking it all so seriously. #wealthalchemy #lineart #minimalistart #linedrawing #ink #inklineart #inkdrawing #couples #embrace #kisses #hugs #partners #romance #artistthoughts #artistsblock #whoAmI #beinghonest #artdegree #afraidofsuccess #afraidoffailure #stuckinthemiddle https://www.instagram.com/p/CDosOyOhACi/?igshid=176m69z96pv0f

Pablo Picasso, Figure 1928
In this weeks workshop , we were encouraged to make Sculptural pieces using wire and rope as the only medium. Very limited right,  The idea For me in this task was to make Use of as much of the workshop space and tools as possible, afterall, it has been 3 years since I’ve had this opportunity! The Welding-Punch machine caught my eye, I basically couldn’t wait to get some welds made, so that the Wire could take shape into something more upright, structural and moving into the air... I took inspiration from a wire sculpture work (made by Picasso which was discussed in the lecture for the week. (Picasso, Figure. 1928).
It was an interesting task, bending the steel was easy with the aid of clamps and bending apparatus. I stuck to developing the structure for the duration of the class, exploring different bends, some angular whilst, as you’ll notice, some Curved. After the template was made, I was able to come back for a Booked Workshop session where I introduced rope as a wrapping and binding element to the structure. I soon begun developing the technique so that the rope had a flush and rhythmic flow to it, as it manoeuvred from one wire to the next a pattern formed, resulting in a fabric effect, blocking out areas of the sculpture.

Terrific talk by ex-Strode-art student Alex Loughlin (* @rrealexx on instagram) about his progress on the Fine Art Programme at MMU, now in the second year. Life in Manchester, transition from college to uni, the pandemic, ambition, portraiture, visiting speakers, life as a student, accommodation and practicalities, networking, opportunities and lots of inspiring drawing. Alex also joined us for the life-drawing sessions and talked to many students, clearly in spired and now considering MMU for their UCAS applications.

Art School Graduate shirt. I always get asked what can I do with an art degree. Who knows. In this economy and social climate where people trust internet personalities with no professional training over people who do, you're not sure what you're useful for. Currently it seems to be constantly screamed at by entitled people. Also the shirt is poorly done on purpose as a joke within a joke about art school. . https://www.etsy.com/listing/618293939/art-school-graduate-shirt . #spazoutloud #shirt #tshirt #screenprinted #silkscreen #artschool #artschoolgraduate #humor #humour #artdegree #sarcasm #etsy #BFA #bachelordegree

my work?
As my last year in the Art and Design program at MHC is coming to be 1 semester left, I am in the beginning stages of planning what I will do and where I will go after I’m graduated. As an artist/designer this can be a very intimidating question, or just confusing to even know where to start!
From guidance of my instructors in the past 3 years I’ve discovered I’m very interested in pursuing an “artist in residency” experience. Either I will continue more education through an institution for painting/art history while focusing lots of my time in studio practice, maybe building a body of work. I also want to get a job in the digital world - something in graphic design, motion graphics, web design, or video. But! I have been looking into applying for residencies, so what is that?  A residency is when an artist applies to a residency program located usually in a remote country, where a group of artists are excepted. The artists can be from anywhere in the world, work with a range of mediums (print making, ceramics, painting, design, etc.), and in all different stages of their artistic career.
Anyway. If I’m interested in applying for these things I’ve come to the question -
Tumblr media
In the residencies I’m interested in I want to explore my painting. here do I want to go in my painting? What has my work been about so far? Where does it go after instructional direction? What do I want to explore?
Tumblr media
Here is a few things I jotted down while I tried to dissect what I’ve been painting about in the past couple years. Why do I search in the areas that I do for inspiration? I seem to come back to nostalgia, and extracting images/forms I’m inspired by in my daily activities. I love going for walks, and never forget my camera. I’ve always had an interest in cropping compositions I see as I walk, trying to capture colour, shape or texture. Then I collect all these images and have been mashing em all up. I LOVE COLLAGE. I do, I love taking away context from images and putting them all in new context, and embracing the 2 dimensional frame. I have been trying to strip away my pre-concieved expectation for what an image should look like, how it should be realistically rendered or where it should exist in a frame. I’ve been very inspired by DADAism - an art movement focused on approaching art with a child-like mentality - not crowded with influenced ideas and expectations.
I’ve also been interested in the relationship between digital and fine arts. I’ve been really delving into graphic design, motion graphics, photography and video - and I try to come into those projects with a fine arts perspective. I want to bring all my elements from my fine arts into the digital world, specifically to push composition and colour.
This has been a great area to explore this year, as my education is all taking place online, in everything I make I consider how does it transfer to digital? How is it received? How do I need to adjust my process to fit this online format?
So. I’m taking all these ideas floating around right now and making plans for my path after graduation. I’m so excited for my exploration!

When attending Art classes in Uni, I always felt inadequate in my art. My grades were passable and I never got much praise from my peers. I understand the need to better oneself and not to be arrogant. But I also understand now that art isn't a one way street were one way is the attainable goal. I never felt proud about my art before cause it didn't match other standards and ,well, to hell with others standards I'm going to do best with my standards. Cause what I want isn't what they want. #mood2018 #artschool #artdegree #artstudent #university #art #watercolor

I was trying to post sketchbook work everyday to archive my earlier sketchbooks but was momentarily distracted by the devastation of having wasted the chance of change for the many and finding out that we have a racist homophobe with a hugely increased mandate in charge of our country. Meanwhile, here is another set of images from Sackcloth and Ashes. It seems suitable today that they are a little dark. The opening collage was about the attempted suicide of a lovely gay lad I knew which happened when he was only 14. There was and still is a massively higher percentage of suicide and suicide attempts among LGBT youth than in the wider population. The next one was deliberately provocative of a photo of young boys on holiday. It was from a magazine and the two kids were brothers. I wanted people to feel uncomfortably confronted by their own prejudice. There was an association in the narrative of the Sun, the Mail and all the usual hard right suspects of gay people, particularly gay men with paedophilia. It was designed to increase prejudice and I wanted people to see the image and be disturbed by a picture of little boys holding hands then read the text underneath. I had felt nostalgic for my own boyhood before it occurred to me that those hostile words like faggot and queer, used as the ultimate insult in the playground were actually describing me. I remembered a period of naive innocence before I discovered I was to be hated. It would have been about the same age as the lad I mentioned above made his first suicide attempt. It occurred to me that actually LGBT had more need of nostalgia about our childhoods that straight folk did. After that was again, the murderous Book of Leviticus and more planning drawings - ending up with a tribute to Kieth Haring’s very cheeky political collages where headlines were smashed together into irreverent new narratives. I particularly hated David Mellor at the time, as well as other Tory ministers but noticed a photo of him alongside some other homophobic nonsense about the ridiculous Freddy Starr so chose to smash them together. #sketchbook #archive #queerart #queerartist #collage #suiciderisk #drawing #artstudent #artdegree (at Staffordshire University) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6I_qfqAU6w/?igshid=j09f8aeqnv6q

Arts degrees are awesome. And they help you find meaning where there is none. And let me assure you, there is none. Don’t go looking for it. Searching for meaning is like searching for a rhyme scheme in a cookbook: you won’t find it and you’ll bugger up your soufflé.
