I’ve been very into Abner Dean's work these last couple days. Here's one of his New Yorker Covers from 1934.
I’ve also been thinking about pairing music with my posts. Here’s the Ray Noble Orchestra getting particularly jazzy in 1933 with a vocal refrain by Al Bowlly (everybody loves Al Bowlly), some hot trumpet by Nat Gonella, some great baritone saxophone by Ernest Ritte, and reedman Freddy Gardner.

Fun things to put in your DnD campaign and then just never explain
·       Ghost hitchhikers that travel with the party for a few hours and disappear into frost.
·       Giant amorphous lumps of flesh washing up on the beach.
·       Cryptids from a wildly different genre or setting. Bonus points if they just find the cryptid dead in the woods with no explanation.
·       Cattle abduction/ mutilation that might be witches, might be aliens.
·       An in-universe scientology style cult.
·       A wildly silly villain who is secretly horrifyingly serious and a horrifyingly serious villain who is secretly wildly silly.
·       Really specific examples of Morman folklore despite there being no Mormon’s in the setting and none of you’re players being Mormon.
·       A crashed UFO, “Expedition to the barrier peaks” style.
·       Overly specific descriptions for the culinary traditions and tradition dance and clothing of every town and village we meet, to the point where you players can only think of the free city of Grayhawk as “The place with the Beignets” and they keep coming back to one specific village in Keoland for “That really good cheese and herb dip.”
·       In game gambling, and fantasy versions of real world but obscure pub games like Aunt Sally, Elver-drinking, Crown and anchor, or Bilge-thwapping.
·       Brain parasites. And not just the fantasy ones.
·       On that note, fuck it, Yerks.
·       Yerks having beef with mind-flayers, who find them delicious.
·       Bards being unable to pass any crossroad without a devil trying to trade their soul for musical excellence.
·       Dwarfs don’t have hair, they have Flagella, so their beards are prehensile.
·       The Erfurt latrine disaster.
·       About a %10 chance of every village being horribly folk-horror in a Wicker man/ Midsomar type way.
·       Needlessly sexual Morris dancing.

Hi fiend I am here to advise you it is a complete waste of time participating in the review exchange. Nobody will read your work. You will not read theirs. Use your time more productively and update your writing. @arrthurpendragon is a nice enough if naive person but you don't need to make the same mistakes as she does
Oh wow.... my first Anon hate message ever. I HAVE ARRIVED.
Although... this is less anon "hate" and more "anon passive aggressiveness masked as concern." Which means... Anon...are you my Aunt Sally?
Anyway, let me address your points one by one (yes, I know I should ignore anon messages, and I probably will from here on out, but since this is my first, the occasion needs to be marked).
"Hi fiend I am here to advise you it is a complete waste of time participating in the review exchange." Aunt Sally, I will presume you meant "friend." (Although I am taking a little bit of fiendish glee in this, so maybe you are prophetic). Anyway, I get to decide what is a waste of time or not. Most writing blogs and educators suggest joining a writer's critique group, because using critical thinking about someone else's writing can help you develop those skills about your own.
"Nobody will read your work." Aunt Sally, Ikemen Sengoku is a very small fandom. I knew even before I posted my first fanfic that I would not get a lot of engagement. That said, there is a percentage of people reading my work who started out fandom blind from Reddit review exchanges, and went on to download Ikemen Sengoku (in fact, Cybird possibly owes me a commission... or a job).
"You will not read theirs." That's not your call.
"Use your time more productively and update your writing." Aunt Sally, since July 2021, I have published 435,013 words of fanfic on Ao3. That includes two completed longfics. A third completed longfic gets updated every Sunday afternoon. In the same time, I wrote three television pilots, one short film, and countless medical documents. I'm pretty darn productive. Now... if you had said, "use your time more productively and clean your house"... you might have more of a case.
" @arrthurpendragon is a nice enough if naive person but you don't need to make the same mistakes as she does" I think you're wrong, Aunt Sally, and I'm going to bet on that with the following Challenge to the Ikemen community.... go to the review exchange in question (there are previous links on my blog) and pick a fic to read and review... even if you're fandom blind, or if you don't read OC fic, or write fanfic at all... you'll find a nice long list of things to read over the holidays. Just read one to show Aunt Sally that the Ikemen community is small but mighty.

11/2/22.
I just received my Les Rallizes Dénudés LP from Temporal Drift. Over the years my appreciation for Japanese rock has grown. From Tenniscoats to Aunt Sally to yumbo to The Caraway...there is diversity of sounds that's hard not to recognize or appreciate.
Now, here come The Rabbits. Formed in the early 1980s, The Rabbit clearly owe a debt to bands like Mission of Burma or The Fall. But, they really flew under the radar at the time. This reissue from MESH-KEY (New York; also reissued Aunt Sally) is releasing today.
This would fit nicely on a playlist with black midi. Read the Bandcamp page for a description on how The Rabbits made their unique sound.
