✦2022 beauty favorites✦
Nyahello ヽ(o^▽^o)ノ!! Last year I went through makeup like it was nothing and finally found brands that I really liked and a makeup style to compliment me and my style. It was totally fun and I just love doing my makeup everyday or whenever I have the time. One of the best hobbies I've picked up so far. This is ultimately just going to be a list of my favorite products that I use everyday. I hope it helps if you’ve been having a hard time getting into makeup yourself plus most of these products are stuff you can find at the drugstore which is always a plus.
First I'm going to talk about skin prep because preparing your skin is just as important as using good products. These products work for me but may nor work for you which is totally fine and why you should always find what works for you and incorporate it into your routine.
First is cleanser. I’ve used a lot of cleansers and have a few favorites but my top two are the CeraVe foaming facial cleanser. It's very good at cleansing but doesn’t leave my skin dry and tight afterwards. I also love the dove sensitive skin bar. It's perfect for sensitive skin like mine. I mostly use it in the winter when my skin is the driest.
Next is moisturizer. I've used a couple of these and have my own very specific moisturizing routine. Because my skin gets really dry, I use oil and a moisturizer after I wash my face. I use a mix of coconut oil and shea butter on my face while it's still damp and then go over that with Dove nourishing face, hand, and boy cream. This method looks in moisture and leaves my skin so soft. I recommend this if you get really dry skin in the winter like me.
Next is primer. I've tried so many primers and absolutely love the elf power grip primer and the elf putty primer. The power grip primer is good for when you want your makeup to last all day. This primer is for you. I use it for my special events like prom, school dances and prom. The putty primer is good for everyday use and makes my base look so smooth and amazing.
Now I'm going to talk about base makeup. The perfect base elevates a look from a 3 to a 10.
I start off my base with my foundation. My favorite is the maybelline fit me matte. It's perfect for everyday makeup simple looks but also great for a fully glammed up look. Another one I recently bought and love love love is the fenty pro flit’r matte foundation. It's so good and lasts all day. I highly recommend getting it.
Next is concealer I use the elf camo concealer when i say its matte i mean it. It lasts all day but it does dry down pretty fast so I recommend putting it on one area at a time, blending it in and repeating on the next area.
The i set with the black radiance true complexion setting powder. I highly recommend this to dark skin people since it comes in a wide variety of shades. Honestly I recommend black radiance as a whole because of the shade range and how great all the products are all together.
I don't have a contouring palette i just use the brown eyeshadow out of an eyeshadow palette i was given for christmas a while ago
One staple I always have in my makeup collection is a rainbow palette. It doesn't matter where it's from, just have one with all the colors and you’ll be good. I highly recommend any of the Ucanbe palettes off amazon. They are super bright and pigmented and are so super amazing.
And lastly setting spray. I absolutely adore the M.A.C Prep and Prime Fix+ spray. It's so good for not only setting but also fixing makeup looks. It is a bit on the expensive side so I also recommend the Milani make it last setting spray, it's a great drug store alternative.
That's all for my current faves thanks for reading.

Rewind: The Byrds: The Best of the Byrds: Greatest Hits, Volume II (1972)
Released in 1972 and focused on the post-jangle, with Roger McGuinn-as-only-original-member band, The Best of the Byrds: Greatest Hits, Volume II is a good primer for those who aren’t yet prepared to delve into the Notorious Byrd Brothers, the Ballad of Easy Rider, Byrdmaniax and (Untitled) among others.
Only “He Was a Friend of Mine” harkens to the original quintet and their sound. Volume II is instead a trip to the country (and western) on “Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man” and the Gram Parsons era on Sweetheart of the Rodeo’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.”
Mostly, however, this Greatest Hits - a misnomer of the highest order - spotlights the McGuinn-Clarence White-Skip Battin (or John York)-and-Gene Parsons editions with forays into Christian rock on “Jesus is Just Alright,” psychedelic country with “Chestnut Mare” and such throwaway novelties as “I Wanna Grow up to Be a Politician” and “America's Great National Pastime.”
The album was originally conceived to bridge the gap between the final band’s split and the original group’s 1973 one-off, eponymous reunion album. That it exists at all speaks mostly to McGuinn’s belief in the Byrds but it’s best heard as a springboard to the group’s under-appreciated, late-period output, where better songs reside deep in the grooves.
Grade card: The Byrds: The Best of the Byrds: Greatest Hits, Volume II - B-

Random Blog Survey!
I grabbed a random set of questions online just for fun. Feel free to take and answer for yourself too! :)
------------------------------------------------------------
When was the last time you wore a full face of makeup? Today! If full face means primer, foundation, eyeliner, and eyeshadow! Do you own an iPad? No. Who was the last non-relative woman you spoke to in person? Weird question, 3 of my friends just today! What’s the most hours you’ve worked in a week? 50 Do you believe in karma? Yes. Definitely does feel like there's a karmic justice with cause and effect. Actions have consequences. What temperature is your thermostat currently set to? 68 What’s a topic you’ve drastically changed your opinion on? EVERYTHING. I used to be soooo, sooooo way too overbearing on every topic! Now I learned to just live and let live, let people enjoy things! If people are happy, I'm happy. :3 Are you a kind, thoughtful person? I do my very best every day, but I have no right to answer whether I am or not. Do you know anyone who has a PhD? Yes. Who were you dating in July 2010? Or were you single? I was single yeah, I was literally just 13 back then! Those were good times actually. x3 How do you feel when you’re the center of attention? I prefer not to be. I want to make others happy instead! Would you rather be a nurse or a mechanical engineer? A nurse actually. Do you like Starbucks chai lattes, or do you think they’re too sweet? I do! I'm more of a mocha person myself tho. Are you and your SO facebook official? FB? I haven't posted in that in YEARSSSS. Do you know how to set a formal table setting for a 3+ course dinner? I do! Funny enough, in elementary school, there was a funny VHS we sat through for an entire class, teaching us how to set a table for such an occasion. Are you in a good mood today? I am! It's been up and down, but I'm in a happy mood rn! Do you know anyone who works as a lawyer? Yes. Which would bother you more: being told you’re not likable or being told you’re not sensible? Being told I'm not sensible. Do you have a difficult time relating to other’s emotions? Never. I'm overly sensitive to other's emotions around me. I feel so much of people's energy and it affects me greatly. :T How many bedrooms does your house have? 4 What was the last electronic item you bought? I believe it was an iPhone XR for streaming! Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis? YES. Way too many times. When you were 15, what did you want to grow up to be? A police officer! I wanted to do good for others and keep everyone safe. Did you ever achieve that? Nope, I couldn't get into the college course and instead opted for psychiatry! Have you ever had a dream in which you died? Most of the time, though 95% of my nightmares now are about abandonment.
Have you bought a bag of potato chips in the past week? Yessss, Doritos Sweet Chilli Heat! NOM.

I still have my Samsung Galaxy S20 and that was pretty much my first phone aside from flip phones soooo... pretty much never. xD Would you rather live in an apartment in the city, or a cabin in the woods? Apartment in the city would be fun! I'd love to explore and visit all kinds of places. :3 Do you use Snapchat? Just for its filters, I don't talk to anyone on it tho. Have you ever driven or ridden on a motorcycle? Yess, my parents' friend let me drive his motorcycle once down the street, it was really fun and cool! Do you know anyone who’s struggling with addiction? Yes. Smoking addiction sadly. I won't ever smoke/do drugs. x . x Are any other members of your household home right now? Yes. What was your first job? And how long did you work there? Working at a boat store, and it gave me waaaay too much anxiety, retail? Never. Again. What was your favorite school subject when you were in middle school? Psychology!
When’s your next vacation and where are you going? To the U.S. in Summer and I'll be going to a Paramore concert with someone AWESOME. HYPE! :D
What’s something that you wish you could do one more time? Spend more time with my cousin Matthew, he passed away from cancer at 24 when I was around 14, so I never got to really be with him. He was really into PCs back in the 2000s and built a custom Windows VISTA PC, yeeeeeeeeeah! xD I miss him a whole lot.
If you weren’t in your current job, what would you want to be doing? I would absolutely be doing a career in psychiatry right now! I'd love to help others when it comes to mental health, because the industry really needs to do better. Either that, or I'd love to be a community manager of some kind for a game or something!
What’s the biggest project on your to-do list right now? Right now, I'm focusing massively on charity work (raised over $5,700 so far! Woowoo!). I educated myself in animal rescues and sponsoring animals in animal sanctuaries, and I really want to apply myself into that. Raising funds for all kinds of great causes! Aside from charity stuff, I've been taking great strides in getting the help I need and figuring myself out. Better diet, exercise, looking into cool stuff like piercings, epic fashion, it really has been doing wonders in becoming who I want to be! :)
What’s one hobby that you’d like to take up? Art, and actually developing my own unique art style! That would be so cool, but right now I'm focusing on instrument playing and creative writing. Electric guitar, piano, and poetry. <3
If you had to pick only one, what's the best Youtube video? Easy, Solence - Animal in Me. Best song, best music vid. If music vids don't count, probably a Stimpee video? Like Rust Has a New DLC where he messes around with tape recorders in Rust. xD Ooooh or a murder mystery vid or criminal documentary!
Creepypastas or AMVs? That's a tough one RAAAAAAA it's gotta be creepypastas, it has to. Those are just too classic. Even though AMVs also are like a fine wine. xD
Did you drink an energy drink in the past 48 hours? Yep, classic green Monster, THOOOO I recently fell in love with the green Ultra Paradise Monster too!
Vine or Tiktok? Vine

Many stores mark down their lip ranges by up to 50 percent, and some even offer BOGO deals.
History of the day
Founded by international businesswoman and beauty blogger Huda Kattan, National Lipstick Day is a celebration of the oldest cosmetic product in the world. The event is held annually on July 29th.
Beauty experts and makeup artists celebrate National Lipstick Day with special deals on popular lip products. Many makeup brands also offer free lipstick samples to consumers. Some drug stores offer a huge discount to promote the day.
Some of the most popular lip products include reds, pinks, and classic red tones. Women are also encouraged to try out new lipstick shades and share their favorite brands on social media.
Stores marking down their lip ranges by 50 percent
During National Lipstick Day, many beauty brands are celebrating with sales and giveaways. Many stores are marking down their lip lines by up to 50 percent, and this is a great time to pick up a new lip product.

Brands pulling out all the stops for the day

The product features a patented radiance technology, which enhances the color's shine and glossiness to produce a luminous lip effect.

Pros n Cons of CBD oil at dispensary stores
Since CBD is an approved prescription drug, it can't be legally included in foods or dietary supplements. CBD can only be included in "cosmetic" products. But there are still CBD products on the market that are labeled as dietary supplements.
Tumblr media
CBD is a chemical found in marijuana. CBD doesn't contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana that produces a high. The usual CBD formulation is oil, but CBD is also sold as an extract, a vaporized liquid, and an oil-based capsule at various CBD dispensary Stores.
In case you are wondering if CBD shows up on a drug test. Long story short, CBD may yield a positive result on a drug test. There are certain actions you can take to determine whether the product you're buying contains the lowest amount of THC possible, but there's no guarantee that the labeling is accurate due to the lack of regulation of CBD products.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) has allowed the use and registered the medicine called Epidiolex which is CBD with not more than 0.1 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), based on the approved threshold of the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (US DEA). Hence, CBD oil is legal as it is not cannabis per se.
Pros of CBD oil
Ultimately, the primary reason why people use CBD is that it tends to have calming, relaxing, and pain-reducing effects. It has been used to alleviate joint pain and nerve pain, reduce anxiety and stress, treat insomnia, improve migraines, and address nausea.
According to Forbes health, the under listed are the CBD oil benefits includes
Offset Anxiety and Depression. ...
Treat Select Epilepsy Syndromes. ...
Reduce PTSD Symptoms. ...
Treat Opioid Addiction. ...
Alleviate ALS Symptoms. ...
Relieve Unmanageable Pain. ...
Ease Diabetic Complications. ...
Protect Against Neurological Disease
Tumblr media
Cons of CBD oil at dispensary stores
The most comment side effects of CBD include drowsiness, gastrointestinal issues, dry mouth, reduced appetite, nausea, and interaction with other medications.
Keep in mind that CBD is not an intoxicating substance, whereas THC is psychoactive that can get you high," explains Dr. Jas Matharu-Daley.
It is currently illegal to market CBD by adding it to a food or labeling it as a dietary supplement.
Marijuana is different from CBD. CBD is a single compound in the cannabis plant, and marijuana is a type of cannabis plant or plant material that contains many naturally occurring compounds, including CBD and THC.
Warning ⚠️
CBD is an unregulated substance in the US and thusly it should be used with caution. This is particularly significant for those taking extra prescriptions or potentially those with progressing clinical issues. All things considered, primer exploration of CBD and its advantages are promising corresponding to assisting with gentle to direct well-being concerns and it is for the most part thought to be a protected substance. Wellbeing experts don't think about CBD as a fix for serious clinical issues, including disease.
In conclusion, The FDA will continue to update the public as it learns more about CBD.
Some CBD products such as best CBD oil like Joy Organics, CBD gummies, CBD tea, and many more that are found in CBD dispensaries or CBD stores are being marketed with unproven medical claims and are of unknown quality. I recommend to buy your CBD oil products from Gold leaf Industries and everyone is subject to do your research and try the products which match your health and body.

Tell us about what skincare ingredients and products you love!
Okay, so I LOVE TALKING SKINCARE. This is a huge topic for me and I often write up a blog post once a year where i recommend skin care products. So here is this year’s recommendation! An insanelyyyyy long and detailed post nobody asked for!! HERE WE GO:
I am a long time skincare advocate...before it really blew up and people started really getting to know more about their products and ingredients. I’ve just always had very acne-prone skin so I’ve had to pay attention to what products and ingredients I was using and how their formulas worked for me. As a result, over the years I tried A SHIT TON of products. Many expensive, fancy, high end, etc. But now I have my skincare routine down to a much more manageable and quality ingredient list. Obviously everyone’s skin is different...but this is what I use on a regular basis these days:
Serums:
- Krave Beauty’s Great Barrier Relief Serum: Honestly, this is THE SHIT. My favorite moisturizing serum to really help balance your skins hydration barrier and stay hydrated. It’s thicker and almost feels like a moisturizer. It’s so great.  - The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Drops: Niacinamide is an amazing ingredient for your skin and can help a tremendous amount with clearing the skin, resurfacing, fading scars, and more. This really does a good job helping with my acne, so i really recommend to anyone. And I am pretty sure it’s like $5 cause it’s from the ordinary.
Moisturizers:
- CeraVe Moisturizing Cream: It’s a very cheap drug store moisturizer that has good, clean ingredients. After using fancy moisturizers for years, I finally gave into my dermatologist’s recommended lotion. LOL. They do have a lotion that is lighter, but my skin tends to be dryer, especially in the winter so I use the cream not the lotion. It’s thicker. (For high end junkies--it’s like comparing Drunk Elephant’s LaLa Retro to their Protini cream). I also sometimes throw in drops of a marula oil into this cream if I am really dry. Make myself a little face smoothie.
Eye/Lip Creams:
- Mario Badescu Ceramide Herbal Eye Cream: Now honestly, I still haven’t found my perfect eye cream yet...but I have used this one for a few years now. It moisturizes well and is cheap to buy. It’s probs not the most effective but at least I am moisturizing my eye area. One day I will take on more eye creams that target certain things, but that is one day when I have money to spend lmao. -Glossier Bubblewrap Lip/Eye Cream: This is a very unique moisturizing product that is meant for sensitive skin like your eye area and lips. It does say it plumps a bit, which I don’t ever feel a plumping effect, but I do love to use it on my lips. It’s so moisturizing and is kind of like using a primer before you apply chapstick or lipstick.
Exfoliators:
- Glossier Solution: The OG chemical exfoliant I tried and loved. These types of products aren’t great for everyone, and may have to be used less or more depending on skin type, but as an acne-prone human, I love a chemical exfoliant. This works and lasts a long while.
- Krave Beauty’s Kale-Lalu_AHA: Another chemical exfoliant. I recently tried this one because I do believe Krave Beauty uses better ingredients than Glossier Skin typically does (no shade tho). They were close in price, so I made the switch and have enjoyed the results so far. The packaging is also beautiful.
- Dr. Brant Microdermabrasion Exfoliant: This is NOT a chemical peel, this has aluminum oxyde crystals in it to polish the skin like a normal exfoliant would. It also has a lot of ingredients that help renew and refresh the skin while exfoliating. Now this product is HELLA expensive...I only have it because I once bought it for way cheaper when I had a subscription box. I don’t know if I would spend the full $80 bucks on it, but your skin does feel smooth.
- Tatcha The Deep Polish: This is an enzyme powder that you mix with water and exfoliate fro there. It is from when I used to buy the highest end products in hopes it would help my skin. It is pricey, but again does leave your skin feeling soft. So I rotate it in from time to time.
Masks:
- The Ordinary’s AHA 30% BHA 2% Peeling Solution: AKA THE BLOOD MASK. Now hugely popular on social media, the “blood mask” is a chemical mask that peels off dead skin and essentially works to eliminate the top layers of your skin and begin rejuvenating a fresher layer for softer, healthier, plumper skin. I do this once a week and it is way cheap. I can compare it to Drunk Elephant’s Sukari Babyfacial and it definitely beats that expensive version.
- Glow Recipe’s Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask: This is an overnight moisturizing mask that you simply wash off in the morning. It really helps lock in moisture and feels nice on the skin. I use this when I am feeling really dry.
- Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask: This one you have to mix the dry clay mixture with water and apple cider vinegar to create a goo that you can then let dry on your face. It may be intense for some, but I find it really helps dry out my acne spots and reduce redness in my skin. It’s always a fun one to do with other people too because you do have to prepare it. Good sleepover activity.
- GlamGlow Bubble Sheet Mask:  This one is honestly more so used for when I am traveling and want to keep a mask on hand or when I am having a fun girls night or something. It’s a bubble mask--so to me that just means fun. I typically avoid sheet masks (unless I am traveling) because I think you end up throwing a way a lot of product you are paying for. But this one is fun, it’s cute, it’s different. I don’t notice a huge change in my skin tbh, but it is a fun activity for girls night.
Honorable Mention/Random Products:
- Youth to the People’s Kale and Green Tea Superfood Cleanser: I stayed away from this one for a long time because it’s expensive and I could rationalize buying such an expensive cleanser, but I got a gift card to Sephora and finally decided to try it. And ya know what?? I guess I am fancy now because I really love it. It does not overly strip your skin at all, and for the first time in my life I really know what that means. It’s so great, it smells so good. Ugh. Can’t get enough of this bougie bitch of a face wash.
- The Inkey List Retinol Cream: A recent purchase, but I have enjoyed seeing the results. Everyone imo should be using an eye cream and a retinol. This is a nice introduction to retinol, so I recommend to those looking for one.
- Glossier Mint Balm Dot Com Chapstick: THIS AGAIN--IS THE SHIT. Many will say they would never spend more than two bucks but one tube of their’s is seven bucks and it is WORTH IT. I buy the three pack once a year and i’m good. This is the best chapstick you will literally ever use. Fucking buy it. If I could tell you only three products that are a must from this list this would be one of them. (the other two would be great barrier relief and the kale cleanser)
- Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: I like this lip mask, it’s not needed everynight, but I do like to use a lip exfoliant (made or buy one, whatever) and then use this to really retextures my lips.
- Bag Balm: Now this is a very unusual product to recommend lmaooo. Originally, bag balm is used for chapped cow udders on farms--which is how I discovered it. Farmers eventually noticed that it helped your skin retain moisture and repair cracked skin in their hands. So now it is known as a good thick ass cream for hands and feet. Now this shit is again--used on cows originally, so the formula feels thick and greasy. I like putting it on at night and letting it soak in for a while as I lay on my phone. It really works--I swear to you.
- Sagely CBD Cream: I use their relief and recovery crea which smells like lavender and has a cooling effect when applied to the skin (kinda like biofreeze or icyhot would). This is only a 50mg CBD lotion, but I do like it.
- Mad Ritual CBD Muscle Recovery Balm: Now this is thick and definitely a balm, not a cream. It is much higher strength though, so I break it out when needed and a little goes a long way. This one is 200mg of CBD.
- Mario Badescu Drying Lotion: This drying lotion is now so popular but has been a staple of mine for at least a decade now. You leave it on over night and it really does dry up and reduce zit size. Helps a lot. There must be a reason why super models are told to use this shit before a runway show.
- Tatcha The Essence: Essences are a new and kind of weird thing, kinda like priming the skin to allow for better absorption of a product. Now this product I received as a Christmas gift one year, but I am pretty sure it’s like $100...breaking the bank as always, tatcha. Anyway, it does allow for better absorption of products and feels light and refreshing on the skin. One bottle has lasted me two years now. I don’t know if I would recommend it, but I do use it somewhat regularly and it does make you feel like a bougie bitch.
AND THAT IS THE END. Sorry that was soooo long. But like I said, I do a write up once a year of my skincare products anyway. So there you guys have it!! If you have any questions at all about your skin or skincare routine , honestly hit me up. Over the years I have slowly has friends come to me. Once I collect all of the I will have all of the infinity stones lmao.

An interview with music journalist Paul Zollo. I believe this is from 2000. I’m a sucker for Billie Joe talking about his songwriting process.
By PAUL ZOLLO
SEVEN STORIES ABOVE THE SUNSET STRIP in Hollywood is the Chateau Marmont, an old hotel rife with the ghosts and scandals of Hollywood’s recent and not-so-recent past. Famous for the elegant, old-world discretion it affords all its guests, for decades it’s been a safe harbor for stars seeking to circumvent the squall of media surveillance. It’s where John Belushi died, sadly, back in bungalow three, and where Jim Morrison wrecked his back by swinging Tarzan-like from the roof, using a drain pipe as a vine. Every star, it seems, from Chaplin and Bogart to Dylan and Lennon have hidden out here while in Hollywood. “If you must get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont,” Harry Cohn, the first boss of Columbia Studios, once told William Holden.
So it’s an appropriate setting for Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of Green Day, to be holding court. Armstrong and the band are no strangers to scandal – they’re the ones who started a mudfight that bordered on insurrection at Woodstock II; they’ve been outspoken about their fondness for drugs and alcohol; they’ve been especially harsh in their expressions of scorn for many other bands; and they’ve frequently “redecorated” hotel suites, bars and Tower Records stores alike with a flair for creative demolition that brings to mind the heady decadence of the Doors and others.
In fact, parallels between Armstrong and Jim Morrison abound. Like the leader of the Doors, Billie Joe is the creative catalyst of his group, but only writes within the fold of his fellow musicians. Like Morrison, Armstrong has been known to walk on the razor’s edge of life, bringing an authentic, expansive passion to every song he sings. He’s also been known to match his inclination to strip his soul bare in song by taking off his clothes in concert. The difference is that when Jim Morrison did it, all hell broke loose, the country was shocked and the singer was arrested. But when Billie Joe does it, he gets acknowledged on the MTV news, Kurt Loder smirks, and that’s about that. Being shocking these days is just not like it used to be.
‘It’s something unpredictable,
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life.”
From “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”
By GREEN DAY
Few things seemed more unpredictable than the thought that Green Day would have a Number One hit with a pretty ballad of all things. Even more unlikely would be that the song, officially entitled “Good Riddance” but better known as “Time Of Your Life,” would become as ubiquitous in the American consciousness as the Star Wars theme. Used on “Seinfeld,” two episodes of “E.R.,” and extraneous sporting events (as when Mark MacGuire became the king of baseball’s home-run derby), Green Day’s ballad quickly became more famous than Green Day itself.
“Good Riddance” now stands alongside Springsteen’s “Born In The USA”, Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” and Sting’s “Every Breath You Take,” as one of the nation’s most misappropriated hit singles. Like all of those songs, which are much darker if you examine their core than the mainstream ever seemed to recognize, “Good Riddance” actually comes closer to condemnation than the kind of nostalgic celebration for which it’s been used:
“Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it’s worth, it was worth all the while
I hope you had the time of your life. “
From “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)”
By GREEN DAY
Though Green Day’s presence on the world stage shifted from popular to astronomical because of this song, many of their old fans felt alienated by their secret heroes’ injection into the mainstream. “[`Time of Your Life’] was a drastic change for us to record,” Billie Joe said. “We knew that there were going to be some people that weren’t going to like it because it’s not a 1-2-3-4-Let’s-go-punk-rock tune. Mike [Dirnt] said, `This is a real beautiful song, who cares what people think?’ So we just went for it. Long term thinking, you know. Punk is not just the sound, the music. Punk is a life-style. We’re just as much punk as we used to be.”
Of course, definitions flow fast and fluid, as purveyors of punk, such as Armstrong, play along the borders of pop. “A lot of punk rock bands are always trying to be so hard all of the time,” he said. “Macho brutality doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a good songwriter. I think that some of the Beatles’ songs are way more punk rock than most punk songs written today. Like the song `Yesterday.’ It’s such a bittersweet song. “
Billie Joe was born in 1972 and grew up in Rodeo, a little Californian town just outside of Berkeley. His father and uncle were both jazz drummers. “I was a guitarist in a house of drummers,” he said. His father died when he was ten, the same year he met a neighbor named Mike Pritchard who shared his passion for making music. Together they decided to drop out of high school to start a band, which they called Sweet Children. It was a decision Billie’s mother encouraged. “My mom sort of let me do whatever I wanted,” he said. “When I quit school, she thought that was a good idea because I was really ambitious to play. So I started touring when I was seventeen.”
Pritchard changed his name to Mike Dirnt, Tre Cool replaced Al Sobrante as official drummer, and they called themselves Green Day, a Bay-area euphemism for a day spent smoking pot. Their first release was an indie EP called 1000 Hours, after which they signed with Lookout Records to make 39/Smooth and Kerplunk. In 1994 they ascended to the major leagues, signing with Reprise, and released Dookie. They soon  became an MTV mainstay, and their mudstorm performance that year at Woodstock cemented their reputation as a band on the edge. Three more singles followed, as did sales of more than eight million albums worldwide, and a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
Insomniac was released in the fall of ’95, but instead of going on a European tour as planned to launch it, they elected instead to stay home and write and record more songs. The result was the most popular, and most critically acclaimed album of their career, Nimrod, which included “Time Of Your Life.”
Warning was the new album at the time of this interview, and the impetus for Billie to talk. Inspired by the rich lyricism of Springsteen’s The River and Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home, Green Day went away for a while to write and play the songs before recording them. It’s their first self-produced and most sonically adventurous album to date, blending layers of acoustic guitars in with the electrics, and with some unexpected detours, such as the German beer-hall stomp of “Misery,” and the Clash-meets-Kinks pop-punk of the title song.
“Caution police sign you’d better not cross
Is the cop or am I the one that’s really dangerous?
Sanitation expiration date question everything
Or shut up and be a victim of authority
Warning, live without warning…”
From “Warning”
By GREEN DAY
Today Billie Joe is ensconced within an overstuffed burgundy couch in his hotel suite. Although he’s drinking coffee from china cups, and eating fresh fruit and croissants from a silver tray, he’s remained loyal to the punk lifestyle, and is wearing a black t-shirt and baggy jeans. Prior to our talk, rather than linger in the luxury of his suite, he ducked down into the hotel’s bleak back stairway for a cigarette. Though he’s undeniably a star of the first degree, he’s uncomfortable with such designations, and shuns all the trappings of stardom. As opposed to the Ferraris and Lamborghinis driven by his peers, an old Ford Fairlane remains his vehicle of choice. He did admit to one extravagance, however, which he revealed somewhat sheepishly. “As soon as I could afford it,” he confessed, “I went out and had it primered.”
BLUERAILROAD: You write all the songs together in the band. Do you start songs on your own and bring them in?
BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG: Yeah, sometimes. I’ll come up with the song with the chord changes and the lyrics, and then I bring them into practice, and then we sort of restructure them together. I like to come in with a tune. I’ll just play guitar and sing it for them, and then we start to learn it. And as soon as we start to learn it, we can make changes and come up with a different structure. Move the chorus around, make the verse a little longer. That kind of thing. I definitely like to think of it as a collaboration between the three of us.
Do you always change the songs?
Well, we have a lot of songs. There have been some that I have brought in and nothing really needs to be done. Sometimes I’ll suggest a part that needs to be worked with, and we’ll try some different things. And then they’ll write their bass-lines and drum parts around it.
Do you ever have a problem sharing credit on songs you wrote alone?
Well, we’re a band. We’ve been able to stick through a lot of years because the three of us support each other. The songs come from Green Day, and I like to stick by that. We like to just keep things equal in the band, and I think it’s what has made our band healthy over the years. We give each other respect. There is no one who stands out more than the other one in this group. Especially since we’ve known each other for so long.
These days do you write on electric guitar?
No, on acoustic. I have a Silverine Harmony. But it sounds good. I just have it around the house, so I’ve written most of the songs on it.
Do those songs then shift a lot when you bring them to the band, and play them on electric?
No, because I always have it in the back of my head about the dynamics of electric guitar and drums and bass. Between me and Mike and Tre, I always have that dynamic in my head – what am I going to bring to the table that they’re going to be able to play, and which will have our certain energy. I always keep our energy and our music in mind, sort of subconsciously. But I think that’s the beauty of this. That not only can I play these songs with a band at full volume, but also that I can play them on a cheap, acoustic guitar. And it can have the same kind of impact.
           “Warning” would work that way.
Yeah, it does. That kind of came all together at the same time. I think lyrics on this record were really important to me, and to have a well-rounded record as far as what kind of topics I wanted to write about, and sing about. That was one of those songs that seemed to just write itself. It just came really naturally.
Is that unusual for you, the feeling that a song writes itself?
Well, I try to go for inspired moments. But if I want to write a song that sounds like it has a pop kind of edge to it, I really want to be able to say something. I have to say something – it’s vital for me. I can’t just write something that would be sugar-coated, and have a pop song with nice lyrics that go along with what everyone is doing on the radio these days. It’s very important for me to have a message that goes along with the writing. So, you know, what comes to mind for me is a song like “The Ballad of John & Yoko,” where [Lennon] had this really nice sounding song. But the lyrics penetrate like a knife. “They’re gonna crucify me…” That’s kind of nice way — nice, I mean, in an oxymoronic sense – to put forward something you want to attack.
You’ve done that in many songs.
Yeah, I think it adds a sort of demented side a little bit, sort of like a clown in a circus. But it also makes the lyrics a lot stronger. If you take a band like Rage Against The Machine, the music is aggressive, and the lyrics are aggressive at the same time. And I love Rage Against The Machine, but sometimes it feels like you getting bombarded by someone’s else’s point of view. The person is not telling you to think, but what to think. And that’s one thing that I really wanted to come across in the music and the lyrics. To think about the world around you, and not what to think, so to speak. And at the same time, to have my opinions coming through at the same time.
Are you always clear about the meaning of a song while writing?
No. That’s hard. I mean, sometimes I’ll have things in the back of my head that I want to write about. But I never want to come across as pretentious or preachy. So I just wait for my thoughts to settle. To a certain extent, you have to be a little self-righteous and I think it’s healthy. Especially when, nowadays, there’s so much stuff that is about decadence. And when it comes to rebellion, a guy who has a Rolex watch and is driving around in a Porsche, talking about that he really wants something to break, I don’t really think of that as rebellion, I think of that just as a decadent rock star.
Do you have any kind of routine for songwriting?
Last record I was just sort of pounding songs. Anytime I had any inkling of an idea of anything at all, I would just grab my guitar and play it and work on it no matter what the song was like. Whether it was inspired or I just got drunk and started playing. But this time I waited for inspired moments. And I think it took me a long time just because of that. I wanted everything to sound refreshing, and something that would make you want to turn it up a little more.
Did you have times when you tried to work and nothing would come?
Oh yeah. You get frustrated. You feel, “Man, I just want to write a fucking song.” And sometimes it’s just not there. And you can’t dwell on that when that happens. You have to just let it go.
I don’t ever want to try to outdo myself. I feel like if you try to outdo yourself from the last thing, instead of just working on your inspiration, I think the music kind of suffers a little bit, sometimes. Sometimes I’ll just get a very general idea about the kind of song I want to write. And I’ll just sort of store it in the back of my mind and see what comes out. It can come out in five minutes, it can come out in five days, five years, five decades.
Are there songs you worked on for years?
Yeah. “Longview” was one that we worked on for years. We knew what we wanted to write about. I told Mike to write a bass line and one day I came home. This is when we lived in the same house. He had just dropped some acid (laughs) and he said, “Listen to this.” And I said, “Okay, I guess it sounds good.” He came up with this bass line that really worked well, so we ended up practicing and came up with the song.
Are there many songs you start that you don’t finish?
Yes. And I’ll just wait for the right time and the right place for it. There are some songs I finish but then I think it’s not right for the record we’re working on. There’s a couple of songs like that off of Nimrod. “Time of My Life” had been written a couple of years before.
That song resounded in enormously with the public. Was it just a fluke, or did you sit down with the intention of writing that kind of song?
Both. I think that anyone can sit down and write a song. Whether or not it’s any good is another thing altogether. You know, there’s no school you can go to that will help you learn how to become a songwriter. But you can sit down and do it. Especially with rock & roll. But to put something down that is actually really great, it does go beyond you a little bit, and sometimes it takes patience.
Do you write all the time?
Yeah. Whether it’s good or bad, I don’t know. Or if it’s appropriate for what kind of idea or sound that we want to get across on the record.
Where do you think the great songs come from?
I don’t know. I really don’t. It comes from somewhere deep down inside of you that you didn’t even know existed. It’s kind of like seeing a shrink or something. (Laughs) There can be a lot of anger, or sadness, or joy, that you had but you didn’t even know you really had – but it can all come out. You feel a connection with it, and so other people can, too. You strike a nerve.
Does songwriting get easier the more you do it?
I think so. I think you definitely learn more as you go. I think you find new ways to motivate yourself. You test yourself a little bit more and see what comes about. And you challenge yourself in new ways to see what comes out. You learn new ways to get the engines going. But whether or not it does get easier, it’s what I do. And I love doing it.

Fave affordable makeup
I won’t call it “Drug store” makeup, I buy most things from Ulta, and a few skin care things from Target, also one of my fave things can be found at Walmart. So here’s my list
Skin care
Pacifica Gem Water micellar cleansing tonic. Smells good, great at taking makeup off, doesn’t have that cancer causing chemical that Garnier has in it. It’s vegan and cruelty free. Plus Pacifica has a recycling program where they give you a free shipping label so you can send their containers back to them.
Pacifica Crystal Foam Sparkling Clean face wash. The whole crystal line smells like candy, I love it so much. Vegan and cruelty free.
Pacifica Sea and C Love vitamin syrum. I really want to try more of their syrums but this is what I have right now. Vegan and cruelty free.
Pacifica Rose Jelly Beauty sleep under eye gel. I’m 29, I gotta start this. Vegan, cruelty free.
Pacifica Future Youth Crystal Ball Syrum. I use it on the areas I’ll start to wrinkle first. Vegan, cruelty free.
Pacifica Crystal Youth face lotion. Honestly this is the first product I got and it cleared my adult acne up so much so fast. I swear by it. Vegan, cruelty free.
Pacifica Crystal Beam foaming scrub. For exfoliating without causing micro tears. Vegan, cruelty free.
Crystal Lava Bubbling Charcoal Mask. The best! Vegan, cruelty free.
Hair Care
Pacifica long and strong shampoo and conditioner. Sulfate and paranormal free.
It’s a 10 leave in conditioner. I only started using it recently because I had a sample size bottle from my old Birch box subscription
Pacifica sea salt hair texturizer.
Honestly I need to learn more about taking care of my hair. I grew up in Arizona where, as a kid, I’d get hot and sweaty and dirty everyday and so I got used to washing my hair in the shower everyday. My hair improved when I switched to sulfate free shampoo after an adjustment period. My hair is pin straight, fine, I say it’s thin but hair dressers say I have a lot of it. I just shampoo my roots and condition my ends but I still do it daily. I never use heat tools because it never freaking stays and I also air dry.
Makeup
Pacifica cherry matte primer.
Milani eye shadow primer. It’s so perfect I feel no need to use anything but it. I never crease and the colors become more vivid.
All my eyeshadows are makeup revolution which is pretty much dupes of Too Faced palettes at a third of the price, and BH Cosmetics. I use use eyeshadow as eyeliner so that’s why you won’t see eyeliner in my list here.
Makeup revolution concealer
Makeup revolution foundation stick
Pacifica cherry matte setting spray, I’m a big fan of matte.
Makeup revolution Banana setting powder
Makeup revolution contour palette, but I pretty much never contour. I have makeup revolution blush and highlighter but I rarely use blush since it brings out my underlying acne scars.
NYX brow mascara.
Mascara is where I will dish it out. My fave new mascara is Damn Girl! By Too Faced. But I buy the mini size, it gets used up before it dries out or goes bad so it’s worth it. I also liked Stilla Huge but I wasn’t sure if it was vegan and cruelty free.
Lipsticks I use are Soap and Glory’s Sexy Morher Pucker satin and matte lipsticks. They don’t feel dry, they last, they smell like cocoa, the colors are great. I also use ulta lip oils, peach and jojoba is my fave, I loved Milani’s lip oils till they disappeared, and Pacifica chap sticks. Also I have a NYX lip tint/stain that I love! I need more of it but it was a holiday special from last year.

An Esthetician’s “Holy Grail” Skin Care Haul.
Throughout the years, I’ve been looking for those “holy grail” products to simplify my daily beauty regime. With a lot of time researching, watching endless beauty guru reviews online, personal trial and error, and gathering information from my girlfriends/fellow esthetician peers, I feel as though I’ve successfully found the best products on the market IMHO. I’d like to share with you... An Esthetician’s “Holy Grail” Skin Care Haul.
Dermalogica’s Precleanse
Tumblr media
Why I love this product: I use this to remove makeup, dirt, and debris prior to using my cleanser. When we’re washing a face full of makeup, we don’t penetrate our product deep enough to give us a proper cleanse. So, a double cleanse is a must if we want to truly benefit from our skin cleaning routine.
How to use: First, dispense product into try hands and massage on the face focusing on congested areas. Next, wet your hands and massage the product into your skin over the applied precleanse oil. Watch as your day’s worth of makeup and excess sebum dissolve right before your eyes. Using lukewarm water, rinse your face and pat dry. The precleanse allows you to be properly prepped to use your desired facial cleanser in order to effectively and thoroughly cleanse your skin.
Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Purifying Gel Cleanser
Tumblr media
Why I love this product: This has and always will be my favorite cleanser. I’ve never used a cleanser that has made my skin feel as thoroughly cleansed as this one. You can use this twice effectively, as your go-to makeup remover and again to cleanse this skin effectively. It lathers up so nicely and leaves the skin feeling refreshed, clean, and evenly textured. This product helped me clear up my acne and to this day. maintain a beautiful complexion with no breakouts.
Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant
Tumblr media
Why I love this product: You probably know all too well, you should not exfoliate the skin daily. Exfoliating too much can strip away at your face once you’ve successfully removed all the dead skin. Well, this product was designed for daily use. This product uses a finely grounded rice-based powder which is great for a safe exfoliator. If you’re unfamiliar with microtears, many scrubs use plastic beads that are not only harmful to our oceans and sea life, they also create microscopic tears under our skin due to the uneven and jagged cut beads. This can lead to infection, breakouts, and further harm your delicate skin. This product is safe to use on skin and beautifully manufactured.
How to use: Dispense a quarter sized amount of powder into damp hands and massage the product gently into your skin for about 2 minutes. You may also leave the product on your face for 5-10 minutes as an exfoliating masque. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
 Witch Hazel Astringent
Tumblr media
Why I love this product: It’s a gentle, non drying alternative to alcohol based toners. Also, it’s only a few dollars at your local drug store or Walmart.
How to use: Personally, I bought a small travel size spray bottle and filled it up with Witch Hazel. I use this to spritz on my face before moisturizing and after cleansing/exfoliating. Toner prepares the skin for moisture while aiding in cleaning and refreshing your skin. You can also dispense a small amount of Witch Hazel on to a cotton round and pat your face with it.
Aveda Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Lotion
Tumblr media
Why I love this product: A little goes a long way. After applying an even coat of this moisturizer to the T-Zone, (the driest area of my face) I never feel the need to apply more. Many moisturizers leave my skin feeling tight and dehydrated after use. This moisturizer gives my skin a consistent hydrated feel even hours after applying.
Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base
Tumblr media
Why I love this product: If you’re anything like me, I have dry dehydrated skin. Sometimes, moisturizer can still leave the skin wanting more. If you need a little extra boost in hydration, this face base does it all.
How to use: I apply it with a beauty blender to evenly smooth over my skin. It’s widely used as a primer for a foundation application, although it is perfectly fine to wear alone. It not only plumps the skin with hydration, it’s wonderful for correcting uneven skin tone while lessening the appearance of large pores.
