Dungeon Menshi spoilers:
It is interesting how in Dungeon Meshi, history of the Golden kingdom is a circle. A power fuel kingdom appearing out of nowhere, lead by a tallman in the world dominated by the long living races. Dergal and his ancestors even have some similarities in look to Laios. As well as Thistle and Marcille being elven court mages, with the fear of loosing their new family because of lifespan difference. And Laios court advisors (Kabru) being cautious of long living races plots the same way that court advisors didn't wanted for the Dergal father to have an adult elven mage in fear of them influencing the king in a wrong way. In general both Laios and Marcille are characters that do not fit their current society. Marcille uses dark arts, now forbidden yet once openly practiced magic, as well as her life span is closer to elves from centuries ago. And Laios while we can't say he would fit better in, in the past, well what about future? His fascination with monsters can remind us of cryptid lovers or even our days biologist! Humans in the past weren't studying animals and if someone would have this kind of hobby they would find it quiet strang I think.
I think this is also part of Dungeon teachings. In the end Marcille and Laios as well as Chilchuck (someone that really fits in the current world.), Senshi and Izutsumi (both not really belonging in the now, yet they don't fit into past and future either.) bring back an ancient kingdom and save the world. It is the fusion of what was is and will be that helps in this task, that helps to creat a better tomorrow. We can not reject the past, we need to learn from it (like Marcille learned from tragedy of Thistle life) and bring the best parts from it with us. We also need to be brave enough to break conventions and typical ways of thinking (As Laios monster fascination and his overthinking of their traits were the key to defeating the Winged Lion). But we can not forget those people of now and those that do not fit (As relationships with and skill set of Chilchuck, Senshi and Izutsumi helped to keep Laios and Marcille grounded and break the Lions hold on them). In the end it will help us to creat a better tomorrow.

Meet Alakai, a Sergal and dragon mix! He's a really cute and fluffy beast. I studied sergal's anatomy for it and carefully worked on anthro's body. It was one of the hardest refs I have ever done, but very satisfying in the end. Do not copy or use, the character has its owner! Commissions are open! (and I do many other things, not only ref sheets)

Warnings: Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon spoilers, character briefly being drunk
a short, one-off Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon fanfic i wrote! takes place pre-manga, back when the Golden Kingdom had just won the war and Thistle was only barely starting to lose his grip.
The prompt is from @creativepromptsforwriting‘s November prompt list
The Kingdom’s main square was quiet by the time Thistle had relaxed enough to partake in a drink, signs of the earlier celebration all but abandoned for a quick return to practicality.
A small tankard in one hand and candle in the other, he took the occasional sip as he stalked slowly through the streets. While most would feel lonely (or, if one were the particularly jumpy type, unnerved), seeing the items from the earlier feast scattered throughout the streets, the elf could only find relief in being alone after such a long day. He’d been subject to several questions throughout it, words tainted with either excitement, suspicion, or fear. Some had even wished to learn of his methods themselves, but the elf was well-aware of those who may very well betray him if the opportunity arose. Not even just him, but King Dergal as well by extension, and he wasn’t about to simply let another would-be assassin have their way with the Golden Kingdom.
Not as long as Thistle drew breath.
Monsters of various kinds drew his eye as they occasionally moved through the shadows. Most slipped between buildings with ease, and Thistle couldn't help but stare at the more powerful of his creations, watching them even as he raised the tankard to his lips again. Everything was coming together. Not only had he found the Winged Lion after what felt like a decade of sleepless nights tracing the source of its power, but it had enabled him to ensure the Kingdom’s prosperity- immortality, even. The smile widened, before eventually shifting into an outright grin.
He’d truly done something amazing, hadn’t he? It was the happiest he’d seen King Dergal since the death of his father. Not only that, but he was safe as well. Possibly forever.
Just thinking about it made the feeling contagious to the point that Thistle couldn’t help but laugh to himself, spinning around as if being twirled in a joyous waltz with his old friend. The bells on his clothes jangled at the movement, catching the attention of a few young wyverns, who flew loose circles around him in their own little dance, letting out the occasional chirp. He came to a stop only as he nearly stumbled. Perhaps it would be for the best to return to the castle.
“Having fun, are we?”
Thistle turned abruptly at the sound, the wyverns alighting on his shoulders protectively. Whoever it was was hidden by shadow. “We won the war, and the Kingdom has been saved.” He replied. “There’s no reason for me to not celebrate our victory, is there?” The stranger stepped forward, only for their identity to be covered further by a hood. He was not completely clueless, however, as he recognized the clothes they wore as belonging to King Dergal’s royal court. But this did little to ease the elf’s mind. Thistle wasn’t about to let another traitor come in right under his nose, royal court or not.
“Perhaps that is the case for now. I am one of King Dergal’s prophets, and I have come to inform you of a vision I had- one of terrible danger.” They recounted, tone serious. “I foresee that this path - awakening the Winged Lion, joining the kingdom with this underground place, immortalizing everyone - will someday spell out your doom. Not only yours, but-”
The abrupt sound of iron thrown hard against stone cut them off.
“That’s enough.” Thistle growled, the hand that had previously been holding the tankard clenched into a tight fist. “I followed the necessary course of action, and no amount of ominous muttering from the shadows will undo what has been done. I now have the power to save them. Do you really wish to take this away from those who need it?” He took an accusatory step forward. “Or are you a spy, hoping to unravel us from the inside?” This, possibly combined with the three other pairs of red eyes watching them from his shoulders, finally seemed to unnerve the self-proclaimed prophet, who widened the distance between them yet again.
“I-if you won’t listen, then at least withdraw your monsters. We’re almost overrun with them, and many are getting worried.”
He was quickly losing patience, which showed blatantly in the furrowing of his eyebrows. “They protect us. With the monsters on our side, the people of this kingdom no longer have anything to fear,” Thistle had come closer as he spoke, and the prophet suddenly found it hard to not be aware of the aforementioned monsters creeping closer out of the corners of his vision. “Be it thieves, armies, or even traitorous scum, King Dhergal is... safe. We... are all safe. Maybe you’ll even… even milk one someday.”
He stumbled.
Whether it was over a monster, the prophet, or a mere misplaced stone, he was unable to process. Nothing much was reaching his brain anymore, only a single thought shining brilliantly in his mind:
He desperately needed to sleep this off.
Thistle moved past the stranger with an awkward half-push and several careful steps, long legs struggling to cooperate with his slowed mind, only making a few steps before having to lean against a wall for support. They were speaking, but he hardly bothered to listen. A single thought brought a kelpie - a horse-like monster with kelp for its mane and tail - to his side. “Do you see?” He slurred as he dragged himself onto it, though it was unclear whether or not the question was intended to be heard, let alone answered. The triumphant tone it carried implied that the answer was a no.
“Helpful.”
They then departed into the night, leaving behind only a bewildered prophet, reckless promises of a better future, and a single empty tankard of apple cider.

Other people probaby have talked about this before, but Marcille and Thistle are clear narrative foils. I also theorise about Laius and the Winged Lion.
Thistle descend into madness was caused, primarily, because they refused to accept the inevitability of death. Especifically, King Dergal’s death by old age. Dergal and Thistle grew up together, and Dergal always treated them like an equal and encouraged Thistle to study magic, which allowed Thistle to stand by his side as a court mage instead of below him as a jester. Dergal, who was like a brother to Thistle and was the one person who saw potential and value in him,  would age and die far sooner than Thistle would because of the difference between elven and human lifespans. And that caused Thistle to obsessively research ancient and forbidden magic looking for any solution that would allow Dergal and the Golden Kingdom to be preserved for eternity.
If Dergal had been an elf with an elven lifespan, Thistle would probably never have become the lord of the dungeon.
On the other hand, we have Marcille. While Thistle’s interest in ancient dark magic was motivated by their desperation to keep Dergal and the kingdom from dying, Marcille’s interest starts off being purely academic, since she sees magic as a tool that can be used for good or evil depending only on the caster’s intent. Therefore, there is no reason to ban research on ancient magic so long as the users don’t do evil with it.
However, Thistle’s intent wasn’t evil, either. From their point of view, Thistle is helping the people they love. He’s prevented the death of the king and his subjects, granted them immortality and has created a dungeon full of monsters to protect them from those that would harm them.
And, as we’ve seen in her nightmare, Marcille also fears the inevitable death by old age of her companions. Especifically, Laius, Farlyn, Chilchack and Izutsumi will die far sooner than Marcille will, and she won’t even have wrinkles by the time the die of old age. Senshi and Namari are the only ones of her friends that come close to Marcille’s lifespan, but she’ll outlive them too (dwarves live 2.5 times longer than humans, elves live 5 times longer)
So Marcille has a completely understandable fear that her friends will all waste away and die before her eyes, and also an increasing knowledge of ancient forbidden magic. Which she has already used to bring Farlyn back to life without regard for any law or taboo. Thistle is what Marcille could become if she let her interest in the ancient arts consume her, gave into her fears, became arrogant enough to think that she knows what’s better for her companions than they do, and stopped listening to her friends’ dissenting opinions.
And, there is also the issue with the winged lion, which is either a helpful protective spirit, or the demon sealed in the dungeon. The winged lion was said to be the protector of the golden kingdom, but it was also the being who fulfilled Thistle’s wishes and helped them turn the kingdom into the dungeon and Thistle into its lord. However, Thistle sealed the winged lion, a good move that’s probably what spared Thistle from suffering the same fate as Misurn if the winged lion is actually a demon, and now the lion has betrayed them and is looking to make a new lord of the dungeon.
I’m pretty sure the lion is a demon. It fits way too well. Dungeons exist as a labyrinth to trap demons and stop them from reaching the outside world, which limits their power by limiting their access to people with desires they can feed from. In order to increase their power, the dungeon needs to attract people, and for that, they need to be discovered. The lion whispered into king Dergal’s ears to make him run away from Thistle’s dream world, which caused the dungeon to be discovered and the influx of adventurers, simultaneously feeding the dungeon and the demon with new desires and causing Thistle to freak the fuck out and spend all their energy and resources looking for Dergal.
The thing is, why choose Laius as the new Lord of the Dungeon, and not Marcille, the dark ancient magic nerd whose deepest fear is to lose her companions to old age?
Part of that is probably because Thistle’s wish lead to stagnation. The dungeon and the world inside it was kept intact and unchanging. It’s possible that the demon/lion was feeding on the villagers, since they apparently have lost a big chunk of their emotions and desires (like their inability to taste and enjoy food). So, were Marcille to become the new lord of the dungeon due to her desire to stop her companions from dying, the demon would run into the same issue with her as it did with Thistle.
Laius’ wish, however, has a very big difference with Thistle’s wish of preservation. Laius, like Thistle, wants his friends to be healthy and happy. But there is something that Laius wants that would be very convenient to the demon in the dungeon: Laius wants to be understood and accepted by others. Laius has always had trouble fitting in (he said that Shuro was his first friend, so he didn’t have any in his village or among the caravan he travelled with before reaching the island), has been taken advantage of by other people and considered a weirdo because of his interest in monsters. In the vision the lion used to tempt Laius, he was the ruler, yes, but that wasn’t the aspect that interested him the most. What was really important for Laius is that the whole town/kingdom completely accepted and embraced Laius’ interest in dungeons and monsters.
If Laius were to bring his vision to life, it wouldn’t be an isolated and stagnant kingdom like Thistle’s was (because Laius doesn’t fear that outsiders would take away what is precious to him), it would need other people to come there in order to thrive. Which would bring a never-ending supply of new wishes the demon could feed from, and eventually allow it to breach the dungeon’s confines and rampage in the outside world.
Another thing that hints at the lion’s potential demonic nature is that all of the mirrors in Thistle’s house have been smashed. Thistle isn’t the neatest person by far, but nothing else is broken in the house, just old, dusty and messy. The mirrors, on the other hand, have all been destroyed, just like the one Misurn smashed in the past. And the lion considers the canaries, whose job is to seal dangerous dungeons to stop the demons inside from attracting people into the dungeon or escaping, to be a threat.
So, to wrap this up, Laius and his party need Thistle’s book to fully unseal the lion, and Misurn and Kabru are unlikely to reach them before they do, leading to a confrontation between the parties if the lion really is the demon of the dungeon. The only thing that could delay them from unsealing the lion is that they are more likely to prioritize healing Farlyn. Something that the lion is likely to offer to assist them with, if only they unseal it. After all, if was Thistle’s power as Lord of the Dungeon that made Farlyn into a chimera, so if they free the lion and Laius becomes the new Lord of the Dungeon, he should be able to turn his sister back to normal.
In conclusion, they are fucked and Kabru is going to smack Laius over the head for trusting talking monsters that offer to make all your wishes come true. Which brings to mind the Kelpie incident in which a monster that appeared to be consistently gentle and well behaved around Senshi until Senshi was finally tempted to hop on its back and it revealed its true nature by trying to murder him. Just like the baby goat did with Misurn, granting everything his heart desired until it tried to kill and eat him. Laius really, really shouldn’t have trusted the monster sword and it’s eventually going to bite them all in the ass.
