Devil's food cake is a moist, rich chocolate layer cake. It is considered a counterpart to the white or yellow angel food cake. Because of differing recipes and changing ingredient availability over the 20th century, it is difficult to precisely qualify what distinguishes devil's food from the more standard chocolate cake. However, it traditionally has more chocolate than a regular chocolate cake, making it darker in colour and with a heavier texture. The cake is usually paired with a rich chocolate frosting.
The Devil's Food Cake
According to Baking Illustrated, the Devil's Food Cake was the result of a time when fancy names for cakes was the norm: the late 1900s. Allegedly, it was the only cake name to survive that era and make it to our modern times. Devil's food cake was invented in the United States in the early twentieth century, with the recipe in print as early as 1905.
This type of cake was called as such because of the deep rich color of the cake. But according to Baking Illustrated, there's more: a devil's food cake has to be a moist cake with an almost silky and velvety texture that has a powerful chocolate flavor. Because the best devil's food cake is made with both cocoa powder and melted chocolate, the amount of chocolate is the predominant flavor.

cakes I baked
this one is the first devils food cake I ever made
it was yummy without any frosting I liked how cocoa powdery and bitter it was even though mom complained about it not being sweet enough.
this is the second devils food cake I baked.
this time I put buttercream banana icing on it while it was still warm so it melted. I also put chocolate chips on top of it so it would melt and seal up any cracks in the cake. the frosting hardened and my dad said it was like eating a cakey double chocolate doughnut.
it was really yummy so I think that was a good thing!!
