durin IV almost gave elrond his true name. something so precious it's reserved for family only. he went against his father, king durin, to help his friend and his people. HE, A DURIN WENT AGAINST THE DWARVEN KING FOR AN ELF. he accepted when elrond called him an elven dwarf and called him a dwarven elf right back. he gave him a mithril shard. he spoke elvish. he called him family. he cried when elrond said goodbye. i-😭 they're such an amazing friendship and tease each other just like brothers

most operators have at least a normal level of Originium Arts Assimilation, and the ones with it as flawed have some reason behind it like being part-Seaborn or a Feranmut fragment
And then there’s this guy which isn’t explained at all

so I can only assume Matterhorn is so uniquely terrible with Arts that he gets +15 res from it

The Rings of Power is such a treat! Each episode is a gem in its own way and i can't get enough of it.
The best part being how each week is like an injection of a powerful mix of excitation for LOTR universe and desire to reread all Tolkien's work, as if rewatching the episodes multiples times isn't enough (I'm having very modest ambitions so far and starting with the appendices of the Lord of the Rings and planning The Silmarilion and the Unfinished Tales for next month...)
Some thoughts on episode 4 (full of spoilers for the series),
Episodes with no hobbits and more dwarves are a win. Actually anything involving Durin father and son, Disa and her children whom we see and don't see at the same time is a delight.
Howewer i don't see there a happy family story with their friend Elrond as a gentle and benevolent sponsor, like everyone seem to describe their bond. I think Elrond appreciate them a lot individually and as couple, enjoys truly their company, but he's by nature incapable to be a friend to them. I can't call friendship a relationship where he doubts his friend's intentions and invades their privacy with suspicious questions he has no right to ask. It could have been another kind of secret more personal to Durin like a real affair. So why did Elrond think it was ok to follow him and his wife and overhear their conversations? The little advice he gave to Durin in the end of the episode, under the form of a confession about his own his father, redeemed him a little bit, but only a little bit. I don't think the couple should trust him or consider him genuine. And it's not because they're dwarves that Elrond is acting this way in my opinion, but really because he can't trust people and can't resist manipulating them to serve his goals and ambitions, like he did in the first episode by colluding with Gil-Galad to send Galadriel to Valinor, out of their way, instead of discussing with her what the elves king has foreseen for her future.
The visuals of Númenor submerged by a giant wave were terrifying and stunning at the same time. What a way to start an episode! I totally empathized with queen Miriel: her panic is completely appropriate. This is the stuff of nightmares, more than any orc or Dark Lord could be and it's not even the work of the dark side. How could an alliance between elves (who are going to be blamed for it) and men work after so much destruction? But at the same time: what a way too to end a season! Because i can't imagine another season finale now than the real destruction of the island...
Loved all the scenes between Tar- Miriel and Galadriel. The verbal sparring between these two strong/competent women leaders was the best moment of the episode: be it the ego fight during the audience or the emotional revelation in the king's tower. In this later scene, the dialogues and acting were especially moving (all this inner conflict for Miriel, so ready to follow Galadriel but incapable to deal with any opposition and conflict, was really good characterization). My favourite part was Elendil staying by the side watching quietly "his" queens (queen of his heart for Galadriel and queen by legal authority and loyalty for Miriel) fighting each other, while trying a little joke to get some attention.
Romeo and Juliet aka Kemen and Eärien are too good and pure for this world, so of course, they will die. They had a dark cloud announcing their doomed fate on their head during the all episode, following them everywhere. It's insane how strong this vibe attached to them was despite all the cuteness of their dialogues and the extra romantic spirit of their costumes.
As expected Adar turned out to be an elf who has been seriously wounded, more likely tortured (captured or left behind by his squadron?) and has now joined completely the dark side. It's a charismatic and quite sad character and i'm really curious to know more about his past. I consider him to be literally the father of the orcs: the one who created them by torturing elves. In the first episode Arondir explained to Bronwyn that the elves healers are in fact artists who reveal the beauty inside everyone. I think Adar was doing the opposite job for Sauron Morgoth, a perversion of his past noble mission.
On the other hand i'm trusting less and less Arondir: did he make a deal with Adar or did Adar release him in a sick game to catch him later and make the hunt of the strong elf who deserted more interesting? Arondir got an interesting mix of action and romantic scenes for a character who was so close to die at the start of the episode. Almost too much, in as he's getting all the focus before getting really killed or turned evil like Adar. This dark turn wouldn't be surprising because the guy has no luck, not in love at least: the timing to kiss Bronwyn is never but never right. I think it will happen eventually (more than some kissing) but they might both deeply regret it. I mean i've got this theory that Theo's father is Halbrand, mostly because it's the only way i can explain for now the ongoing mystery about Halbrand's homeland (i think he was maybe from the same village as Bronwyn, the one that was emptied completely and burned to the ground by the orcs of Adar - that would explain Theo's attraction to the dark side if you believe like i do that Halbrand is the futur Witch King - and i fear his reaction if he catches Bronwyn and Arondir at one point (if Adar doesn't before him).
So far, all the human characters of the Southlands were invented only for the series and had little connection to the books or the films, that's why it was very satisfying when, intentionally or not the writers wrote the attack of the tower of Ostirith like a call back to the battle of Helm's deep. Of course it won't be as epic as in the LOTR films (there's no armies only civilians and the scale is something else), but just the awakening of my memories and of my nostalgia alone is a very nice feeling.
Halbrand and Galadriel keep getting a lot of attention and i still fail to see why? Sure they have chemistry but he's so clearly reducing her in the best case to her race, calling her elf all the time as if he's holding a grudge against elves, and in the worst scenario to someone he wants to dominate, to tame/control (like an horse to use a word that he used), and eventually possess sexually after the blacksmiths planted in his head that she wouldn't want him because she prefers men of better origin (the comment was clearly sexual, there's seduction/attraction but no really romantic feelings in his interactions with Galadriel)
Also this subplot makes Galadriel so stupid: why would she jump to the conclusion that he's a king in disguise just because he wears an insignia? Why does she refuse to believe his protestations and explanations that he found it on a dead man (whom he possible killed)? How can she believe that a real king would act like he did since she met him? He was traveling with poachers who were hunting the worm and have shot it with arrows, that's why the marine animal attacked them (she saw the arrow when she was underwater), he abandoned his shipmates to death, started a tavern brawl, stole the guild crest from the blacksmiths and beat them savagely etc.. In which way does this attitude compare to queen Miriel's regal posture in everything she says and does, or even a "lesser" noble man like Elendil? I don't know why she wants this bad to make him a hero, why she's being so blind to his objections. She keeps bringing his people and the emergency to save them and he showed no interest or care. It makes me crazy and that renders their scenes painful to watch, even though they were well acted and written.
EDIT: I just rewatched the episode and i realized that her position was clearly explained during the audience with Tar Miriel: Galadriel is desperately in need of a royal figure that could gather the men of The Southlands. They clearly won't follow an elf, and not even a numenorean queen can convince them given Númenor's closeness to the Elves. Only a leader born in the Southlands would be able to gather them under one banner. Thus Halbrand is her only and best shot at any attempt of an alliance, whatever the circumstances in which he came into the possession of the insignia, no matter if he's a real king or nobody. She's just trying praying very hard that he's not as bad as he pretends to be and taking a bet that nobody will detect his lies. Or rather, i really hope this interpretation will be proved to be true, because if not, i'm back to the part that i crossed out.
There's so much more to say, notably about Isildur who had a big episode, and his relationship with his sister Eärien, Pharazôn and his relationship with his son Kemen but this is already too long. I'm keeping the rest of my thoughts for future posts.

I WATCHED THE RINGS OF POWER EPISODE 2 (illegally) SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO (PART 2):
IT IS ACTUALLY BETTER THAN EPISODE 1 BUT NOT BY A LOT.
As always a list of bad things and good things (which expanded a bit).
BAD THINGS-
Nori (the Harfoot we follow) seems to suffer from chosen one syndrome because she uses the typical line 'he fell here for a reason.' She thinks she is important but she is just annoying.
Her friend Poppy is just the plain comic relief and is also annoying. Like they just saw the 'stranger' (who probably is one of the Isitari) plummet to the ground and when Nori nears him, they start cracking up jokes. (Hobbits are jokey creatures but when things are serious they adjust themselves to the situation).
The stranger must be an Isitari because he sends fireflies into the air the same way Gandalf does with moths. If he is, it furthers Amazon's disrespect towards the source material because the Isitari made their appearance later in the second age in a different manner.
Once again I am forced to peck on Galadriel. This elleth (whom is shorter than the humans because Amazon has no respect for the source material) almost swam the whole stretch of the ocean between Valinor and 'Middle Earth' until she hitchhikes with knock-off Aragorn (Whom I think is Sauron).
There was a group of humans who rescued her, they're not important but yeah, their dialog is written with tragic stupidity. They call Galadriel a liar even though she said nothing that could be considered a truth or a lie. (Shows the limited capacity of the writers' brains).
Arondir (I rembered his name, yay!) is like the Amazon Spock/Legolas. Still a very 2D character along with his cliché girlfriend, Bronwyn.
On the subject of Bronwyn, she needs to get a babysitter or something for her son, Theo (something along those lines), cause boy gets himself in tons of trouble and he has some anger issues (plus he is a thief). I call it here first, Sauron is going to make him his disciple or something because he has the dark sword.
More non-Tolkien beasts are introduced. Most prominent of which is a dinosaur looking thing in the ocean.
The prop hammers the dwarf prince Durin uses when challenging Elrond is so obviously plastic and light. Even the actors can't make them look heavy or made of metal.
And why do the humans hate the elves? I know in the books they don't really trust or like each other but they were not outright enemies.
Still no respect for the source material or the legend, J.R.R Tolkien.
GOOD THINGS-
Kazad-dum looks absolutely gorgeous. The CGI is better in the second episode compared to the first. Well done on this.
Elrond, despite his awful haircut and his costumes for this episode sucking, develops personality in this episode and actually makes it into being a likeable character. Canonically, according to the books, he should be more modest (and definitely not politically ambitious).
Durin and Disa, despite her lack of beard, is the best and I will die for them. They truly capture the Dwarven spirit we are used to from Gimli and the company of Thorin Oakenshield. Disa is by far my favourite character as she has spunk and personality, which I believe all Dwarven women have.
Celebrimbor, despite looking older than his ancient, great-aunt Galadriel, plays his character rather coolly. He has this pompous but still lordly air around him that I can respect.
The orcs design is phenomenal. I can see where most of the budget went.
Now comes something I never hoped to address, fandom issues. Guys wether you hate ROP or like it. That's your opinion. Don't bully or judge someone based on this trivial matter. (I have noticed that some of the people who are more loyal towards the books dislike the show, and some of the people who fancy the movies more like the show.) If you like it, like it. If you don't like, then don't like it. Either way, no hate intended. This is just my opinion.
I have to admit my criticism over the first episode was harsh but as a die hard fan, they kind of deserved it (it's not like they're going to see my post anyway.)
Okay. That's all I have to say. See you again for episode 3.

Shotgun Shells and Glass
This is Day 4 of Fili whumptober!
Warnings: zombies, blood, glass, guns, swearing
Word count: 1354
Fili remembers just how he found out zombies were real.
Tumblr media
Please refer to the warnings of this story.  If you go past this point you are consenting to reading this content.
The shotgun shells crunched beneath Fili’s boots as he walked through the underground subway, the sound echoing through the tunnels as he did so. Blue eyes scanned the bodies around him for anything that might come in handy before he moved on. If this is how he thought he would be spending his twenty-fifth birthday, he would have thought himself crazy, yet here he was, armored up with any scraps he could find, a spiked baseball bat strapped to his back and his bosses shot gun in his hands.
It had happened so suddenly, so violently, Fili could still remember it as clear as day. It was forever branded into his memory by this point, the sirens screaming through the city and the streetlights going red. It was almost crazy to think it had been almost three years ago now.
He had been at work behind the coffee machine when it hit…
The soft background music that filled the cozy café he worked in paused, a static crackling cutting off the pop song before a man’s voice took over.
“This is an official announcement from the state. A mandatory lockdown has been enforced for the city. Return directly to your homes and lock yourself in. Do not answer your door and do not leave you homes until an official message has advised. Turn off all lights and music with the exception of what you are using to receive this message and the updates that will follow. If you have a more durable way to listen to these updates switch technologies,”
The Durin stopped mid pour, glancing at his boss who had stopped wipeing down the benches to glance back. The message replayed over the speakers again, this time naming a list of suburbs most in danger, a list that included the suburb they were in.
The few customers that sat inside began to murmur, some rising to the feet to leave, the rest scoffing at the announcement and remaining where they were. Fili frowned as he finished off the latte in his hand with a neat swan. For a moment he had thought the coffee shack down the road had hacked into their Bluetooth, an attempt to scare the customers away from their rivaling business, but as a red glow flashed through their windows and the sound of sirens screamed through the streets, he knew it was serious. Frightened people from the streets flocked inside and as he raced outside he could see others doing the same with the shops around his. Almost instantly the streets were deserted and as he locked the doors, his boss doing the same to the windows, he waited with baited breath for something to hit.
How painful those few moments of silence had felt, the sound of his heart beating in his ears. He wanted to call with mother and brother at home, ask them what was going on and if they were safe, but a strange clicking sound from outside had stopped him in his tracks. He had reached to unlock the door when he noticed there was someone outside but paused when a hand rested on his.
“Wait,” the girl whispered and Fili found himself obeying. She was a regular there and a doctor that worked security hospital down town, “Everyone away from the windows quickly, under the tables if you can,”
“Tauriel, what’s going on?” he found himself asking, fear starting to trickle into his calm facade. He glanced around at his customers, the mother holding her son as they hid under the table, the teen girl on the phone holding hands with her girlfriend, the elderly man reassuring the few that sat around him with a gentle voice and a comforting smile.
The red head gave him a sad look and pulled him away from the door and tucked them under the counter. She held her finger up to her lips and everyone in the shop gave her an obedient nod.
Wide eyed and scared Fili watched from behind the till as a silhouette shuffled across the front of the shop, their hand dragging across the glass and leaving a trail of what the man really hoped was red paint. It wore a white lab coat similar to the one the girl next to him wore and their head was at an odd angle. The being stopped at the door, the same strange clicking sound coming from its mouth. Painfully slowly the person turned their head to face inside and a shuttered breath left Fili’s chest as he looked upon them clearly.
The first thing he saw were its eyes, bright white irises again red sclera. Well, eye. Where its right eye should be was a crevice in its skull, bloody and gory the wound was, and it traveled down to its lip. White hair crowned its head the same shade of its eye and its body shook and vibrated. It seemed to look inside the darkened shop for something.
Against the glass it pushed itself showing off the name badge on its chest. Legolas, was written in neat cursive writing and Fili finally picked where he knew the man. He would on occasion come into the shop with Tauriel before work.
“No… no,” the girl whispered next to him, silent tears streaming from her bright green eyes. Lost at what to do or what was going on he wrapped his hand around hers.
Legolas took one last look around the room and leaned back to leave. Fili though he would pass along as silently as he had come but the zombie squinted and with a click, brought his head down into the glass. The crack sounded around the room and his customers whimper and flinched.
The creature drew back and slammed into the glass again, shards piecing its face and falling to the floor around him. Fili saw his boss move out the corner of his eye but a third crash kept his focus on the creature at the door. With one final slam Legolas broke through the door and it shakenly lifted its head to look around the room.
Someone in the shop sniffled and the creature snapped its head towards to sound. It remained motionless for a moment before letting out a screech so loud it forced them to cover their ears. Fili’s boss stood from behind the bar, shotgun in hand and without hesitating, fired. They watched in horror as its head came off its shoulders and its body fell to the ground.
“What the hell was that?” he demanded to the girl before spinning towards his boss, “and where the hell did you get a gun?”
“It doesn’t matter,” the girl shook her head, “keep that thing loaded and follow me. There’s a safe hose not too far from here,”
“A safe house? Safe from what? What the bloody hell was that thing?”
“That thing was my friend,” she hissed back dangerously, “so watch your tongue,”
Fili watched in disbelief as she pulled people to their feet and handed them various things from around the shop.
Turing back around his boss shrugged, “Rumor had it that hospital facility has been testing humans for years. Honestly, I’m shocked we haven’t had zombies sooner,”
“You’re all fucking insane,” he whispered tugging on his braid in comfort, “absolutely insane,”
“Insane and alive,” his boss shot back, “you know how to use a gun?”
“What? No! Of course I don’t know how to use a gun,”
The older man shrugged, handing him a knife bigger than his head, “To bad, you’ll have to make do with this then,”
Fili went to argue back, but a horrifying screech cut him off. Knife in hand he joined Tauriel at the door. In the distance, almost a hundred white haired, white eyed creatures shuffled down the street towards them. The leading creature flicked its head up and paused as it saw them. It clicked, shook and clicked again, its eyes squinting.
In a blink, the shuffling slow creatures were sprinting right towards them faster than any human.
“Fucking dam it,” he whispered griping the knife tightly.
