TOP 10 MUSIC & BAND FANDOMS ON AO3 BASED ON NUMBER OF FANWORKS (2009-2022)

To make these bar chart race, all series titles in the Music & Bands Category on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.

Locked fanworks aren't included in the count because Wayback Machine can’t view those, only Ao3 users can.

Popslash was in the top 10 in 2010-2011. It got as high as top 3 in 2010. By 2022, this tag was removed from the Music & Bands Category list and fanworks tagged with it show up in Music RPF instead.

American Idol RPF was in 3rd place in 2009, and 2nd in 2010-2012. This tag was then removed from the Music & Bands category by 2013, and can be found in the Celebrities & Real People and TV Shows categories instead. I’m leaving it out in this bar chart since it means this tag was miscategorized.

Fandom tags that are no longer in the Music & Bands category tag as of posting this are left out of the bar chart race. These tags are usually either miscategorized or already have other tags referring to the same fandom.

For tags that existed on the same years before eventually merging into one tag later on (such as Popslash and Disney RPF which later on merged with Music RPF), I use the data of whichever tag has the highest number for that year. 

I'll make another version of this next week leaving out the super broad tags like [Genre] RPF and [Country]-pop RPF since almost half of the top 10 each year are occupied by these tags.

Anyway armys have definitely duplicated a BTS vs kpop dynamic in JK vs. Jimin (and other groups obviously) because they haven’t been in that environment in almost 2 years and I genuinely think they miss it. Being able to stand behind BTS flaunting their numbers in the faces of other groups and fandoms was apart of the appeal. And now that they haven’t been a group in so long, they’ve latched onto JK because that’s the closest thing they have to recreating it. (Also with the added perk of getting that scooter boost)

It’s why they act oblivious to the payola he gets because it’s fucks with the illusion of being “organic”. The one thing that they heralded about BTS. They’re over protective of his numbers for that reason as well. You can tell potentially loosing that position as a grassroot fandom power bothers them. Whether it’s to solos, other groups getting bigger or having to face the fact that the fandom is deteriorating. They’re willing to look like raging hypocrites and abandon their own core beliefs to keep that insecurity at bay in the face of everything’s that’s happened.

But the funniest thing about all of this is just how easy it is to dismantle. They honestly want to believe that after claiming that they were gonna take Take Two to #1 on hot 100, failed to do so and instead had it land at #48, that they somehow managed to single-handedly give jk almost 16M streams (after giving the group 7M) and had it debut #1 barely a month later? Take Two plummeted on Spotify after just a week, but they want to believe Seven was just that good and that the GP were that tuned in, that it managed to stay #1 on global for 2 months? They’re full of it. And they’ll ignore the obvious answer while obsessing of these hybe ggs since they need a reason to cling to that “they have it easier” narrative. Cause why can y’all all of a sudden have conversations about “unequal treatment” when it comes to freshly debuted groups (who still don’t have a fraction or any of the tools jk has received), but are mute when it’s happening within the very group that y’all stan?

Just a little reminder, the media, the artist, that you consume is not your entire life, you don't have to consume everything that they put out to be a real fan, you don't have to buy everything or anything at all to be a real fan (i remember being in my early teens and i felt really bad 'cause i didn't have the money to buy the merchandise of my favorite artists let alone go out to see them live, now that I'm older i understand that just because i don't have the money to do everything that i want it's doesn't make me a bad fan or anything like that.).

You don't have to waste all your time with streaming and stuff like that, to be considered a real fan, you don't have to know everything about them (their favorite color, food, movie, etc;) it's okay to just enjoy the things that you like.

it's okay to focus on yourself, don't get stuck in a rabbit hole, focus on your friends, family, career, studies, focus on your mental health, it's okay to let go of your favorite kpop group or whatever if you feel like you need to, you know, even if your favorite artist brings joy to your life, they can't be your only source of happiness, you have a life ahead of you, your favorite artist will not live your life for you, don't end the good concrete things in your life because of a parasocial relationship.
