What No One Tells You About Writing Fantasy

Every author has their preferred genres. I love fantasy and sci-fi, but began with historical fiction. I hated all the research that historical fiction demands and thought, if I build my own world, no research required.

Boy, was I wrong.

So to anyone dipping their toe into fantasy/sci-fi, here’s seven things I wish I knew about the genres before I committed to writing for them.

1. You still have to research. Everything.

If you want any of your fantasy battle sequences, or your space ships, or your droids and robots, or your fictional government and fictional politics to read at all believable.

In sci-fi, you research astronomy, robotics, politics, political science, history, engineering, anthropology. In fantasy, you have to research historical battle tactics, geography, real-world mythology, folklore, and fairytales, and much of it overlaps with science fiction.

I say you *have to* assuming you want your work to be original and unique and stand out from the crowd. Fanfic writers put in the research for a 30k word smut fic, you can and will have to research for your original work.

2. Naming everything gets exhausting

I hate coming up with new names, especially when I write worlds and places divorced from Earthly customs and can’t rely on Earthly naming conventions. You have to name all your characters, all your towns, villages, cities, realms, kingdoms, planets, galaxies, star systems.

You have to name your rebel faction, your imperial government, significant battles. Your spaceships, your fantasy companies and organizations, your magic system, made-up MacGuffins, androids, computer programs. The list goes on and on and on.

And you have to do it all without it sounding and reading ridiculous and unpronounceable, or racist. Your fantasy realms have to have believable naming patterns. It. Gets. Exhausting.

3. It will never read like you’re watching a movie

Do you know how fast movies can cut between scenes? Movies can balance five plotlines at once all converging with rapid edits, without losing their audience. Sometimes single lines of dialogue, or single wordless shots are all a scene gets before it cuts. If you try to replicate that by head-hopping around, you will make a mess.

It’s perfectly fine to write like you’re watching a movie, but you can’t rely on visual tricks to get your point across when all you have is text on a page – like slow mo, lens flares, epically lit cinematic shots, or the aforementioned rapid edits.

It doesn’t have to, nor should it, look like a movie. Books existed long before film, so don’t let yourself get caught up in how ~cinematic~ it may or may not look.

4. Your space opera will be compared to Star Wars and Star Trek

And your fairy epic will be compared to Tinkerbell, your vampires to Twilight, your zombies to The Walking Dead, Shaun of the Dead, World War Z. Your wizards and witches and any whisper of a fantasy school for fantasy children will be compared to Harry Potter. Your high fantasy adventure will be compared to Lord of the Rings.

You can’t avoid it, but you can avoid doing it to yourself. When people ask about your book, let them say “oh, you mean like Star Wars” to which you then can say, kind of, except XYZ happens in my book. These IPs will never fade from the public consciousness, not while you exist to read this post, at least, but Harry Potter isn’t the only urban fantasy out there. Lord of the Rings isn’t the only high fantasy. Star Wars isn’t the only space opera.

Yours will be on the shelves right next to them, soon enough, and who knows? You might dethrone them.

5. Your world-building is an iceberg, and your book is the tip

I don’t pay for any of those programs that help you organize your book and mythos. I write exclusively on Apple Notes, MS Word, and Google Suite (and all are free to me). I have folders on Apple Notes with more words inside them than the books they’re written for.

If you try to cram an entire college textbook’s worth of content into your novel, you will have left zero room for actual story. The same goes for all the research you did, all the hours slaving away for just a few details and strings of dialogue.

There’s a balance, no matter how dense your story is. If you really want to include all those extra details, slap some appendices at the end. Commission some maps.

6. The gatekeeping for fantasy and sci-fi is still very real

Pen names and pseudonyms exist for a reason. A female author writing fantasy that isn’t just a backdrop for romance? You have a harder battle ahead of you than your male counterparts, at least in the US. And even then, your female protagonist will be scrutinized and torn apart.

She’ll either be too girly or not girly enough, too sexy, or not sexy enough. She’ll be called a Mary Sue, a radical feminist mouthpiece, some woke propaganda. Every action she takes will be criticized as unrealistic and if she has fans who are girls, they will be mocked, too.

If you have queer characters, characters of color, they won’t be good enough, they won’t please everyone, and someone will still call you a bigot. A lot of someones will still call you a bigot.

Do your due diligence and hire your army of sensitivity readers and listen to them, but you cannot please everyone, so might as well write to please yourself. You’re the one who will have to read it a thousand times until it’s published.

7. Your “original” idea has been done before, and that’s okay

Stories have been told since before language evolved. The sum of the parts of your novel may be original, but even then, it’s colored by the media you’ve consumed. And that’s okay!

How many Cinderella stories are there? How many high fantasies? How many books about werewolves and witches and vampires? Gods and goddesses and celestial beings? Fairies and dragons and trolls? Aliens, robots, alien robots? Romeo and Juliette? Superheroes and mutants?

Zombies may be the avenue through which you tell your story, but it’s not *just* about zombies, is it? It’s about the characters who battle them, the endurance of the human spirit, or the end of an era, the death of a nation. So don’t get discouraged, everyone before you and everyone after will have written someone on the backs of what came before and it still feels new.

I died inside when he did the Fornite dance. I know it's a dumb thing to be hung up on, but I expected they'd thrown in current pop culture references instead of the book ones. So far that is the only thing that "dates" it. I might tap out if I see airpods and they reference tik-tok. The biggest issue for me is the editing. It felt like it was done with commercials in mind. Or whoever edited those transitions left the fade in too long. Some cuts would jump to black hold for several drawn out seconds then there would abruptly be a scene change that made the pacing feel off and transitions feel uncomfortable.

(this is referencing a post where i said i didnt wanna watch percy jackson bc i saw a gif of him doing the fortnite dance but i took it down before i saw this ask bc i was scared theyd come for me lol)

pop culture references in shows that arent sitcoms just immediately take me out of the fictional universe entirely. and memes these days go by so fucking fast that sometimes in production they write in a meme thats huge but by the time its distributed its already a thing of the past. the fortnite dance i would say isnt quite like that but still for that scene they shouldve just had him do his own dance.

i think writers for the most part just suck at writing young gen z. im 24 but ive worked at a k-12 school and its really not like the only things they say are internet references. they love making tiktoks and being in pictures and they love their friends. they dont say shit like “i cant even” or do fornite dances. i could write a whole essay on writing gen z. if someone wants me to go on, send me an ask i’ll go off.

as for the editing, it actually was edited with commercials in mind. disney plus has a separate payment option that includes ads. so for those with that plan it seems normal but with no ads its probably not as smooth.

all that aside, im actually so happy for the percy jackson fandom. i know the movies sucked shit and they couldve had like harry potter level potential so its nice that theyve been given a second chance. i will watch it tomorrow.

2023 Reading Log, pt 6

I have read a lot less this year than in the last couple of years. I'm not going to beat my previous record of 129 books, that's for sure. But I feel like I've hit a decent stride of quality over quantity with this batch (also, one of them is over 600 pages long)

26. The Ashgate Encyclopedia of Literary and Cinematic Monsters, edited by Jeffery Andrew Weinstock. For anyone who is remotely interested in either monsters or literature, this book is a must-read. Yes, I know it’s an A-Z encyclopedia format and is more than 600 pages long. You can skip around, or read it in chunks. This book is the perfect tool for thinking with monsters, and is an excellent reference tool for using monsters intelligently in a project, or just as a collection of “oh, I should check that out”. It’s not perfect. All kaiju are lumped together under “Godzilla”, which barely gets two pages. Pokemon gets a single, very dismissive, paragraph. On the other hand, the entry for Harry Potter is ridiculously long and very fannish, and the “HP Lovecraft, Monsters in” article ignores Lovecraft’s racism entirely (because it’s written by ST Joshi, who else?). My biggest complaint is the lack of a general Mad Scientist entry—mad scientists are the monster of the 20th century, and both psychopaths and witches get generic entries as well as specific examples. My two biggest highlights are “Women, Monstrous”, which is a college level course in institutional misogyny and how it has been celebrated by some authors and subverted by others; and "Nick of the Woods", which is possibly the most influential American novel that has been almost entirely forgotten in the modern era. You can draw a direct line from Nick of the Woods to everything from Marvel movies to Wounded Knee.

27. Tasting History by Max Miller, with Ann Volkwein. “Tasting History with Max Miller” is one of my favorite YouTube series, and the book of the show doesn’t disappoint. It’s beautiful, with color photos of the food and images of historical characters and events. Most of the recipes come from existing episodes, and so the stories therein are familiar, but not told identically, and there are some that have new lore to go with old recipes. Or lore covered in the show, but a different recipe because the one that was made for the video wasn’t very good. Also, my copy is signed! Max Miller came to a local book fair, so I got to hear a book talk and then get my copy signed afterwards. And that was… two months ago? My reading really has slowed down!

28. Birds: Myth, Lore and Legend by Rachel Warren Chadd and Marianne Taylor. This book collects legendry about birds from around the world, and compares the stories that different cultures tell about the same animal with the animal’s actual ecology and behavior. A fair amount of the stories were new to me, which I was expecting, but I wasn’t expecting the science to be as well! For example, the book talks about a paper that suggests that lyrebird foraging is important for reducing wildfires, as they help to break up mats of eucalyptus leaves and encourage decomposition. Also, as can probably be expected in a book about birds, there’s a lot of very nice photography.

29. The Cat’s Meow by Jonathan Losos. Losos is an evolutionary biologist (he’s the guy doing all of the studies with convergent evolution in Caribbean lizards) who got the domestic cat bug, and this is his book about the evolution of domestic cats. It’s written in a very readable style and goes into quite a bit of depth on how we know what we know. So individual scientists and breeders are profiled for topics like, which population of wildcats do domestic cats descend from? How does the behavior of feral cats in the Australian Outback differ from feral cats in rural Georgia? How is a new breed developed from a single individual? Losos also shares plenty of anecdotes about his own cats, as any loving cat owner would, and shares his “million dollar idea” with the reader. Saber toothed housecats, bred for both long canine teeth and a calm, indoor-friendly disposition.

30. Iberian Monsters by Javier Prado. This was a birthday present from my girlfriend @abominationimperatrix. The book is an illustrated collection of Iberian bogeys specifically—monsters designed to scare children into doing X or avoiding Y. At least half of the monsters in here are altogether new to me, and each entry often discusses multiple related monsters, with the “headliner” getting a full page illustration. Three things that jumped out to me. 1) How many parallels there are between the monsters of Spain and the monsters in Spanish colonies, like Latin America and the Philippines. I mean, that’s logical, but since I knew less about Spain’s monsters, I didn’t see the connections. 2) The large number of monsters that are based on historical individuals. Mostly soldiers and bandits, but also a watchmaker and an anti-fascist writer. 3) The story that scared me the most as a little kid was “Tailypo”… and there’s a variant in here that’s even worse. You know, for kids!

Currently watching: Secrets of the Underground and various horror movie rewatches. Rn I’m very much in a ‘ghosts are the coolest shit ever’ and also a ‘fuck plot I’m learning about what can happen if some moron gives me a shovel’ sorta mood, you know? Except when I have literally any amount of alcohol in me at which point I promptly end up watching Descendants or Z-O-M-B-I-E-S and it’s really pathetic how invested I am in those series.

Currently reading: uhhhh I am rereading/listening to the 1st edition of Killing Time as well as starting The Prince of the Phoenix (the two gayest Spirk books known to man iykyk) but other than that my only fics I’ve been listening to are older comfort fics, mostly either Harry Potter gender fuckery types and SPN infantilism okay SW is really boring and the only comfort fics I got there are where Mandos adopt Obi-Wan and I’ve read those all so much.

Current obsession: the switch my girlfriend got me is so amazing and I’m a lil bit crazy about it. I swear to god I will play Lego Star Wars and forget I exist as a real person for a solid six hours. I sorta listen to documentaries while playing on the switch or I listen to fics (some people may not know I use a screen/file reader for fics and books because I got shit eyesight and too much adhd to pay attention to only one thing so I listen to them) and I swap between the switch or crocheting or whatever else I can think of. So. I’m having fun at least lol.

And of course. It honestly takes a lot for me to fully hate a character and even though I do dislike Hajime’s violent behaviour, it’s not enough to make me full on hate him. And I’m sorry to hear you had to deal with someone like that because yeah, some people really are punchable. I hope you don’t have to deal with him again in the future. Your kindness is really admirable. Even though it also takes a lot for me to become violent, I never feel bad about it (even if I do fail because all in all, I’m not exactly that strong or made for hurting others). It’s kind of satisfying sometimes even just almost hurting someone to me.

Of course. You have so much work to do so it’s totally understandable. And it’s really admirable how much you’ve been able to do and that you’re so close to finishing. And what you said about hearing others talk about their faves just made me smile, it’s so sweet and so nicely worded. And it’s really nice that you can see new things in characters because of that. I’m curious, has anything I said made you think of the characters in any other kind of way? Feel like probably not but still curious. Yes. That’s the scene I always think about when it comes down to Kusanagis powers. I also love sharing it with others because it really is so unique and cool. And I’m saying it as a non-smoker.

Which I absolutely love because reading paragraphs of replies is just my favourite to do in DMs or just on Tumblr. In that case, I also wish you the best of luck in your editing. It’s good to know I’m not alone. It’s kind of reassuring in a way because it lets me know you understand. Yes. That would be amazing. I also had another thought because I’m such a Bandō and Shōhei fan, a proper life story of them. Of course not a full life story but some important bits of their lives here and there. Mainly I want to see how young Bandō was when it came down to Saya because I can just imagine that being so cute (I also sent these questions to a friend of mine that I’ll also add because I’ll forever be curious about these: What made baby Bandou fall for her? How did he act towards her (if he could properly interact with her)? You know, anything that tells me what kind of person he was as a kid apart from Shouhei’s babysitter and saviour)  but I also would have loved to see other moments of their past in anime or even manga form because it really does sound so interesting. And yes to everything that you said at the end. They deserve more love and I’ll eat anything new up (even if it takes me a while because this girl still hasn’t read the last chapters of HOMRA in Las Vegas even though she loved it).

Aww, thank you very much! That’s really sweet and very flattering! I’m always glad when people like talking to me, especially when they’re interesting people! As far as the favourites, I do think most of them were in Black Cat (Sven and Jenos for sure) and Kekkaishi (Rokurou) and I’ve had that same kind of ‘mine, they love me and only me’ fixations with some KHR characters in my extremely early fandom days…but embarrassing secrets – young fandom me writing Ronin Warriors, Dragon Ball Z, Dream Street, and Harry Potter fic by hand definitely got jealous whenever friends liked the same characters as me because I was like ‘now, they’re mine, they love me and only me’. Like I said, I have a much healthier view of it now, especially since I do tend to lean more towards polyships anyway when I self-ship.

Now I completely get you on it taking a lot for you to fully hate a character, because I’m exactly the same. I love really deep diving into characters, analyzing them, figuring out what makes them tick, how they got to be the way they are, and because of that I can almost always find some reasoning or some kernel of something amazing in the characters, making it very, very rare for me to out and outright hate many characters at all. Even villains, when well done, are terrific characters and I do count some villains among my all-time favourite characters, like Creed Diskenth. And thank you for saying that – unfortunately, part of working in the positions I work in means that I have to deal with a lot of really strong personalities, whether or not I like those personalities. And thank you for the compliment but there is a large part of me that says I don’t deserve your admiration, because honestly…I was a very angry, very violent youth. I could make a lot of excuses – a bad home life, running with a group of kids and people in their early twenties that were definitely bad news (not even joking – we went beyond just being delinquents…), bullied to intense degrees, with untreated mental illnesses, but truth be told, I learned in my teen years how easy it is to do extreme physical harm to someone else and that’s a large part of why I hate being violent or even feeling angry and violent now, because I do hold a lot of shame and regret for who I was back then.

And thank you again for your understanding! I’m actually really damn proud to say that, at this point, with 47 queued posts, every single request besides this is answered, though I admit to cheating a little bit! I’ll be making a post here in a couple minutes regarding that and some writing stuff, including a kind of box opening, but I’m actually really happy about it! And since I know exactly who I’m talking to, I can definitely say that you have said quite a few things in our dm’s that have made me pause and really examine some of the things that you’ve said about some characters, such as Yata and Bandou, that have really made me pause and go…hmm, I never thought about that, I’m going to examine this so I can see where they’re coming from and if I can see that too!

I’m so glad somebody finds my verboseness refreshing! And thank you for the wishes of luck! They’re always needed because honestly, I am the worst at editing my own stuff and proofing it, because I either get too critical and delete a lot of good stuff or I get too attached to things that I know should be able to be cut and would be good to cut. But it’s a bitch to find a good proofreader or beta reader, so I do all my own proofing and editing – just takes longer! And you are definitely not alone in that; honestly, I find it a sign of intelligence because it tells me that your brain is coming up with so many things that it’s hard to remember to get them all down in the rush of writing them down! And you know, it’s really funny you mention that because I remember talking to someone a little bit ago in a dm and them mentioning that they would have loved seeing more of the boy’s pasts with each other and I am so down for that. Bandou and Shouhei as kids and how they eventually drifted apart before coming back together. Chitose and Dewa and how they became friends and how they remained friends. Eric’s past in the gang. Hell, anything about Fujishima’s life other than he has parents he lives with would be cool. Yata and Kamamoto’s relationship. Benzai and Akiyama’s time in the military. Seri’s past in total. More about Kamo’s former life as a chef. How people like Enomoto and Goto got recruited into Scepter 4 and what the hell made Goto the way he is…like, there is so very much material that could be explored when it comes to all these side characters, more than enough to make several spin-off manga or even anime seasons. And I love the questions about Bandou, Shouhei and Saya…honestly, I’m probably going to be thinking about that for a while!

for the prompts thing what are your current fandoms? any definite nos?

I will definitely write for: Naruto, YuGiOh, Supernatural, Dragon Ball Z. I haven't written for Spy x Family or Miraculous but I'd try!!

"I don't really go here but I'll try for 2k words": Star Wars (original trilogy/sequels only), I guess I'm open to weird Twilight crack?, I like FMA but I do not remember like 80% of it. However I will write crossovers along the lines of Ed VS Other Media

I've gotten a lot of prompts for crossovers so far, which is fine because I feel like it's easier arrange the crossover so that the burden of "I definitely remembered all these characters names and relevant plot points" is lower for media that maybe I've seen but am not into their fandom. I'm obviously not going to write out every anime, TV show or movie that I've seen, but I will say that I don't like video games and I don't like their fandoms.

so. picture the scene: it's ancient rome... or is it? nope, it's Hogwarts but make it Latin.

So I was thinking today (rare ik) about the gen z edition of harry potter, and how great it would be to have that, but it's just ancient Rome, not in the latin language, but set in Rome.

The great hall would be decked with couches so everyone lounges about eating food; the sorting hat would just be a superior toga, and harry would get locked in the baths. The chamber of secrets? more like the developed underfloor heating system they had going on.

and the best part? the duels... or curse battles if you will. it's giving Hamilton vs Burr, and they just stand there and inscribe curses on tablets and chuck them into nearby baths until one of them outcurses the other

and that's all I have left in my little Latin brain I reckon I'll add to this when the ideas return, but in the meantime I'll be trying to outcurse my nemesis
