Time Travel, Johnlock Style

I’ve started another time travel story! Well, that isn’t good news for the rest of my unfinished WIPs, but it’s not as if I can stop myself. There’s nothing that is so much fun as confounding Reichenbach with a few paradoxes-- all leading to Johnlock, of course.

I’m taking the opportunity to offer up some of my favorite time-travel stories in the fandom and ask for your recommendations.

Rewind, by @khorazir / 47553 words. Post Season/Series 04; TFP does not exist. When Sherlock is six years old, he finds out that strange things happen when the mole on his neck is touched under certain circumstances: it switches him back in time. Over the years, he discovers both the advantages and disadvantages of being thus granted a way to relive certain events, to reconsider decisions and remedy mistakes – until an accidental touch sends him back to Barts morgue on 29th January 2010, thus undoing eight years of acquaintance with John Watson. Is this a most unfortunate incident, a curse, even? Or is it indeed a second chance to finally shape his relationship with John the way it should have been from the beginning?

Like all @khorazir stories, this one is beautifully written and plotted, and it has art as well! If you haven’t read it yet, you should!

Nothing Happened in Belarus by @discordantwords / 6589 words. Season/Series 01, Season/Series 04. Six years, give or take. And one night where nothing happened.

This is truly one of my favorite stories. I can’t even describe it without taking away some of the pleasure you will find in discovering it for yourself. Just read it.

A Winter Walk by @cathedralcarver / 3382 words. Post-Reichenbach. Time is the longest distance between two places.

Like almost every cathedral_carver story, this one makes me cry. Sherlock, returning from exile, runs into John from the future. Bittersweet, hopeful.

I’ve written two of my own:

Concurrence by @calaisreno / 70876 words. Episode s01e03 The Great Game. BBC Sherlock is sent back to 1880 by James Moriarty, for reasons that are not at first clear to Sherlock. There he meets Victorian John Watson. They fall in love, of course, and Sherlock promises to bring John back to 2010, where they will not need to hide their relationship, but something goes wrong and they are separated. While John is trying to navigate 2010 without his partner, Sherlock is learning what Moriarty is planning.

This was one of the first stories I posted on AO3, and still my favorite child (but don’t tell the others). It’s about to reach its third anniversary, and ready to hit the 400 milestone, so somebody go there and toss a kudo at it!

While You Were Dead by @calaisreno / 4210 words. Reichenbach Return. On a stormy night at the hospital, John gets a second chance to say something he regrets not saying. This is part of the Many Happy Returns series I wrote last year.

I love the movie and have had this one marked for a while.

The Case of the Moebius Trip by Bitenomnom. 129,218 words. Post-Reichenbach. When John finally gives in and accepts a case for the first time since Sherlock fell eight months ago, he finds himself in a unique position: in possession of what his client calls a time machine, and desperate enough to give it a go. If it works, he could travel back in time. If it works, he could save Sherlock.

I've been a stan since like 2010, and I find it very interesting that none of her bfs (except maybe hiddles??? but that was more the gp than swifties) get this much hate lol. It's not just about him being a guy because a ton of straight swifties constantly obsess over her exes 🗿 probably because they're not a ~power couple~ and people don't like that she's way richer than him and pays for everything?? Prompt: How did YOU become a Hiddlestoner?

This is a long story, but also typical for the Hiddleston-charme. And for the destructive power of Tumblr. ;) There wasn’t one moment, where I thought “Wow.” It was a long journey that went from “Oh, this guy is kind of charming.” to “Yes, I will watch some interviews and movies with him.” to “I can’t remember the last time I was that infatuated with someone else.”

I first learned about Tom Hiddleston by accident. I found tumblr by looking for pictures about Doctor Who with David Tennant around late 2009/early 2010. Some people around here posted about the actor that was cast as Loki in the new Marvel-movie about Thor. It were pictures like this:

And people talked about how much he looks like JJ Feild and back then I also saw that, even though I thought that JJ was far sexier. My original folder of pics from that time is still called “Hiddleston - Feild”, because there were quite a few comparisons. I couldn’t see though how that baby-faced, golden-curled cherub could play the God of Mischief.

So in the next year I didn’t pay that much attention to him. I was a Doctor Who-fan and a looked for David Tennant stuff around here. But more and more pictures of Tom would creep into the blogs and into the ones I saved. Then the first trailer and promo-videos came out and wow. He looked so different.

I wanted to watch the movie before, because Thor was always my favourite Marvel hero (back from the old TV-show). But this looked really good. And now I wanted to watch Loki on the big screen as well.

Still, just one of the few actors I liked to look at. so then the interviews came out. With every one of them it became worse.

This. Charming. Bastard. Soon he was the main focus of my internet addiction and I had no idea how that had happened.

Still, though. I didn’t gave in 100% just yet. I didn’t want to become a fangirl spending too much time on here or everywhere. So I spent my evenings searching blogs around here, saw the fandom blow up in all kind of ways, was excited and scared. Looked up his work and his interviews. Didn’t have my own blog though... but then when Avengers came out and The Hollow Crown was about to be shown shortly afterwards in 2012. That was when I made my blog and I have been around here ever since. :)

hey so what's the difference between movie loki and comic loki?

Hoooooooo boy, okay, so you probably sent this ask looking for a quick and easy answer, but, no, it’s a big complicated thing to unpack. So I’m gonna do my best.

Okay, most important place to start: there are three different characters in Marvel comics named Loki… technically more if you want to get nitty gritty, but for our purposes, there’s three: the original Loki, Kid Loki, and Ikol-Loki. Original Loki was a major villain and enemy of Thor for fifty years worth of comic book history from his debut in Journey Into Mystery #85 in 1962 until his death during Siege in 2010. Loki then reincarnated as a blank slate childhood version of himself with no memories of his past soon after his death, and that’s how we got Kid Loki who hung around until Journey Into Mystery #645 in 2012. From there, Kid Loki’s body was taken over by Ikol, an echo of the original Loki, and they sort of morphed together into a new Ikol-Loki who has been “Loki” ever since. That’s the version who appeared in Young Avengers and Agent of Asgard. So far there’s only one MCU Loki so that’s an important distinction right off the bat.

With me so far? Probably not because it’s convoluted bullshit, but, hey, comics! I’m gonna make it a little easier though. So, as you can see with those dates, the latter two versions of Loki were happening more or less at the same time that the MCU was starting out and Loki’s first three films were already either in production or done so they didn’t really influence movie!Loki’s creation.

SO for our purpose, MCU Loki is an adaptation of just original Loki, and so that’s what we’re going to look at (don’t @ me on this - I know nothing exists in a vacuum, but we’ve got focus things somehow. Go leave a comment, write a meta about how Ikol-Loki is the true counterpart to Hiddles, I don’t really care, and we’re moving on.)

So, okay, next, I do wanna address something I’ve noticed between people discussing 616-Loki and MCU-Loki, and that’s the fact that a lot of people kinda separate the two because Loki often looks like this:

With green leotards and his horned headdress perpetually on. On the other hand, movie Loki you usually see the black hair exposed and Tom’s pretty face. I don’t really get why it’s so confusing, but apparently a different looking helmet and different clothes throw people off. So just to set the record straight, this is what Loki looks like with his hair exposed in the comics:

All of these comics pre-date Hiddleston’s casting, btw. You can see very clearly and obviously where the MCU got its hair and make up designs from. Loki has always more or less looked like Tom Hiddleston with slicked back black hair and sharp features that are handsome but unconventionally so. Point being: though they wear different clothes, OG comics Loki and MCU Loki look alike so there shouldn’t be the weird divide between Lokis that some people try to peddle.

This question was about difference, wasn’t it? ANYWAY, so I talked about this in a whole ‘nother post (that you can read here), but comics Loki doesn’t really have a blue Jotun form. He has Jotun blood, but it’s not really a transformation thing. However, the CORE difference between MCU and comics!Loki ties into this.

Recall in the first Thor movie that Loki discovered his Jotun heritage for the first time as an adult during the events of the film. He had no knowledge or clue about where he’d came from and he berates Odin by saying “You could have told me what I was from the beginning. Why didn’t you?”

Well those of you wondering what would have happened if he’d grown up knowing, this is your answer:

Loki and all of Asgard know that Loki is Jotun and that he is adopted in the comics. This isn’t a well kept secret like in the movies. Whereas in the movies, Loki was raised to believe himself to be no different than any Asgardian, comics!Loki grew up with his difference well known.

And you can see clearly how different Thor and Loki were treated by other Asgardians as a result. Odin also explicitly calls Thor his favorite son right to Loki’s face all the time. And that’s a BIG departure from the MCU where Odin and Frigga, for all their flaws, tried to raise both children on equal footing and make Loki feel like he belonged in Asgard.

And that really is the crux of how the two Lokis are different. In the comics, Loki has grown up being treated as an outsider and evil, and it made him bitter and fueled his hatred for Thor and Asgard to the point where it consumed him. In the MCU, Loki has always been jealous of Thor, but it’s not until he learns of his true parentage that he goes off the deep end and essentially throws a cosmic temper tantrum because of very fresh and very raw anger over his entire perception of the world and himself being shattered.

They’re both acting out of rage and hatred, but one of them has stewed in it all his life whereas the other hasn’t (at least not to the same extent). And that’s why we see Loki in the comics mostly as an “I know who I am, and who I am is your enemy” type guy whilst the MCU Loki is more conflicted and messy in his villainy (and just to clarify, that’s not me claiming that the MCU Loki is more or less redeemable or villainous or anything - I don’t do moral judgments like that for characters). Their villainy comes from similar places, but it’s ultimately very distinct and this informs any differences in methodology, personality, relationship to Thor, etc.

Aside from that, though, they’re actually pretty much the same person. There are a couple minor differences but they’re not that important. Comics Loki is perhaps more overt in his evil, but MCU Loki is no saint and most of his stories in the movies (bringing together the Avengers, taking over disguised as Odin, dying at the hands of a cosmic terror he brought onto a post-Ragnarok “Asgard”) are actually lifted directly from the comics.
