For the au headcannon game: The events in the MHA universe are the same but after the sluge villain attack instead of Izuku, the one who ends up inheriting OFA is Inko.

*cracks knuckles*

1 - When All Might offers his quirk to izuku, Izuku thanks him but explains that he really wants to be the first quirkless hero. All Might is a bit disappointed but he understands. Izuku asks All Might would accept to have dinner at his house tonight to thank him for saving him and more or less drags him there because Mama Midoriya didn't raise no rude boy.

2 - All Might has a lovely dinner at Inko and Izuku's house and while Izuku is washing the dishes, All Might and Inko have a conversation in the living room. All Might makes fun of his old nemesis and Inko is "Mmm, that sounds like my awful husband who left after discovering that my son is quirkless and hasn't disappeared ever seen." At some point, Inko realizes that the Symbol of Peace is indeed talking about her ex-husband and Toshinori is told that the bitch is still alive.

3.A - "Oh no!" All Might says. "How could I give my quirk to anyone? I cannot find a successor willing to just kill the bastard!" "How difficult would that be?" Inko asks. "If I had the right support gear or another quirk, I would do it myself."

3.B - Inko becomes All Might's successor but All Might and Inko agree not to tell Izuku that his father is a supervillain and that they plan to kill him. Izuku and her do the American Dream training plan together, though. It's a lot of fun. Thanks to that, Izuku gets to be the first quirkless student in UA. Also, he is under the assumption that All Might and his mom are dating but don't dare to tell him.

4 - At Kamino, All Might and Inko beat the crap out of AFO. Sadly, they do not kill him but he is sent to Tartarus. The world doesn't freak out so much about All Might's retirement because everyone is too happy to know that All Might has a very cool girlfriend. After a couple of days, everyone agrees that All Might retires to be a stay-at-home dad while his wife (?) becomes the number 1 hero. Endeavor is left speechless for the rest of the week. (Natsuo is grateful.) Todoroki refuses to speak to Izuku for three days because he looked at him in the eyes and LIED.

5 - During the joint quirk training, Izuku discovers that he has the same quirk as AFO. He is livid. As far as he is concerned, All for One just ruined his career as the first quirkless hero. He swears to murder him if he ever sets a foot out of Tartarus. There is also a moment where he refuses to use his quirk out of spite so Todoroki has to set up a "It's your power!" intervention.

Sorry in advance for how long and wordy this gets.

My Hero Academia is squandered by the less than mediocre writing of Horikoshi. I will give him credit only on his ideas and concepts as the premise of the series and the setting are likely the only reason any of us are still tuning in, that and spite.

The show is too quickly paced and surprisingly for a complaint about a shonen, it's too action packed it doesn't offer much up in the way of quiet moments allowing characters to breath properly outside of conflicts and so I don't really care much about the conflicts they are involved in, especially when the thematic relevance of said conflict got spoon fed to me moments before it started in a shoehorned scene or a flashback.

Hori introduces themes of Heroic corruption regularly but never actually shows any corrupt hero's, and those that are said to be corrupt show very quickly that they aren't, usually at the detriment of others.

A complete reboot is necessary, slowing down the pacing immensely to the point where this war arc we are on will take place once they have all left UA. Have major events of the story take place staggered across the three years of UA, include "filler" with dedicated episodes to every student of 1A with mini arcs exploring the more important side characters such as Todoroki, Tenya, Uraraka, Tsuyu and maybe even Momo.

Completely redo Aizawa to actually perform to his own standards, he should teach the students to work on their fundamental "quirkless" capabilities as he more than anyone should know how easy it is to beat someone who has had their quirk countered to make sure they won't die in a situation where their quirk is useless, instead of threatening to expell them for having a weak quirk or non versatile quirk.

This can be done easily by just inverting his test. Have elementary/middle schools let kids use their quirks in gym and PE to help them understand their quirks and use them safely and give genuine context for why teenagers are expected to be skilled with their quirks when public quirk use is illegal. And have his starting test be about who is the most capable without them, showing him to be an unorthodox instructor and less of a hypocrite as that genuinely ties into his fighting style.

Have Izuku be quirkless for either half or all of his first year at UA. Have All Might take notice of him but still teach at UA to scout out a proper successor. Have Izuku manage to get into UA and do well in it's entrance exam as someone quirkless.

Make quirkless people exist and actually matter. 20% of the human race are quirkless, that is a much larger number than people realise coming in at a wopping 1.6 billion would be quirkless out of 8.1 billion. That cannot just be the elderly like fannon suggests.

Have Izuku go from the quirkless wonder to user of OFA actually matter, have him being conflicted about it, have other quirkless people actually have opinions on it, have people discredit him for being Quirked all along, only pretending to be quirkless. If you have him inherit the quirk at all.

Have stain be quirkless and have that revelation chill the world, have him being rejected from heroics for being quirkless have Stain parallel Izuku in many ways.

I could go on and on and on and on about a million and one ideas that would make the show/manga better but I feel like I've made my point well enough that there is so much here untapped that Horikoshi has, but rushed his way past for the next action scene and ultimately squandered.

Agree that MHA does need a major rewrite. It had such great potential and introduced a lot of intricate concepts for an average shonen, only to squander it at every turn. Like someone super smart in one of my reblogs said, "the story has a lot of interesting ideas, the author just has nothing interesting to say about them." A series that was built upon discrimination, inequality, and prejudice has done nothing more in the end than prop up the privileged, bigoted kid over the MC he abused.

i decided to make a fic rec list of one of my favourite aus/fusions. mostly midoriya-centric, there are some crossovers (with hp), and a lot of different ways in which the authors have taken them - so it could be Quirks, ghosts, outright fantasy aus, spirits, witches etc etc. there isn't a specific order and there aren't a tonne (these are the ones i could find buried in my bookmarks lol), but the ones on the list are all really well written i love them.

i've tried adding relevant information, the summary (shortened if it's pretty long) and just. adding some random tags that may be important. not all of them though. obviously this is not a complete list and there will most definitely be more fics out there, if there are some really good fics that you know that aren't on this list, feel free to tell me, i'd love to read them!!!

headcanons for the useless/annoying ghost vestiges au??

I love this AU so much

- Ive mentionned it once but Oboro haunts Kurogiri, mostly just commenting on his shitty parenting of Tomura as if he's watching a bad TV show because no one can hear him. His life is like watching a bad spanish telenovela or a cooking show and screaming at the people that no dont do that its stupid as shit and they still do it.

- AfO is also haunted by a bunch of ghosts who's only goal are to inconvenience him in the slightest way possible. They are either good friends with the OfA ghost crew (in the "same hat" kind of way) or there is some kind of stupid rivalry between them (like two differents group of kid at holidays camp).

- There exists other ghosts but like the Ghosts show they mostly just haunt one place in particular, the reason for the ofa ghosts (and oboro and afo ghost) haunting a person is because of quirk bullshit (also it might be the OfA users are unable to move on until Afo's defeated)

- While the other ghosts are busy thirsting over Aizawa, Nana has a crush on Ms. Joke. (And maybe Midnight as well).

- When they start living at the dorms the other 1A students realises how weird Izuku truly is, like they knew he had his weirdness, but then they realise that "oh, he really is haunted". At least one of them try to actually communicate with the ghosts with advices from google. The ghosts may or may not decides to go with it for fun. Tokoyami is very supportive of Midoriya's ghosts friends.

would it be if like, Shouto decided he doesn’t really want to be a hero but still somehow pass the recommandation exam (even though he doesn’t really want to) and on the first day, when Aizawa is like “I’ll expell the worst one” Shouto is just like “I know the best way to spite my father” and purposely fail

at some point Aizawa straight up put him aside like “if you don’t try better than this I will expell you” and Shouto just say in his best deadpan “oh no. what a shame. i seem to have lost all control of my quirk. oh no. guess you’ll have to expell me now.”

follow a comedy of Shouto trying to get expelled/regularly ending up “expelled” in gen ed, while Aizawa wonders what the hell is wrong with that kid while Endeavour keep breathing down UA’s neck about Shouto

or something. it’s a zen proverb. anyway, so this is yet another post about Bakugou potentially losing his quirk. I’m gonna try to articulate it a little better this time. rather than just explaining why I think it’s likely to happen, I tried to explain why I think this specific and as-yet-still-hypothetical character decision is a very deliberate and purposeful one. in other words, this isn’t my argument for why it will happen; this is a post about why it should happen.

to start, there are two Horikoshi interviews which I want to quote here, and the reason I’m quoting them is because they do a good job of summing up the dual nature of the hero model that BnHA is built on. I’ll start with the longer quote, which is Horikoshi’s answer to the question, “so Sensei, what heroes do you like?”

[It would] probably have to be Goku and Spider-Man. To me, when mentioning heroes, these two are the ones that I think of. In Goku’s case, it’s the reassurance that everything is going to be fine which he brings when arriving. Such as, on Namek, Goku was getting healed, and his friends were all beaten badly. When Goku finally recovered and walked out of the healing machine, that reassurance right there is what I’m talking about. Something like “Ah, everything is going to be fine”. When I first read it and saw it was really Goku who had arrived, I continued reading thinking the thought “gonna win”. (laughs) That reassurance is something that all of the other characters don’t have. I thought about it afterwards, and even though there are a variety of heroes, the hero model that is built up in my mind is built around the concept that the hero is somebody that brings reassurance. That’s why I think a hero to me is somebody that helps and brings reassurance to others.

In Spider-Man’s case, the first experience I had with this character was the movie, in which there were a lot of scenes with him rescuing people, which I felt that was really cool. The moment he “saves somebody” is really awesome. Well, in Goku’s case, it’s because he likes fighting that he fights, so that’s a bit different. (laughs) You can say that Spider-Man and Goku are two different aspects of being a hero.

I’m sure you all can figure out just who Goku and Spider-Man each represent in respect to our beloved series.

as for the second Horikoshi quote, this one is much shorter. just a single line, actually, in regards to the development of Bakugou’s character:

I also thought to have [Bakugou] and Deku improve on two separate vectors as they entered U.A.

that’s it. just a single sentence lol. except that this one sentence can basically be used to sum up the entirety of Bakugou’s character development throughout the series, and it also serves as a roadmap as to what I think might happen next.

let’s start with the very first line in the series.

this sets the stage for everything that happens next. it establishes who these characters are right from the get-go. we see the hierarchy of quirk society, and we see two children born on polar opposites of the spectrum. Izuku, who was born quirkless, who exists at the bottom of the food chain. and Katsuki, born with a powerful quirk and the natural talent to back it up, who sits comfortably at the very top of the pyramid. two children who, from a very young age, are set up to walk completely different paths in life.

and yet the curious thing is, their goals are the same.

they both want to be like All Might. interestingly, though, they look up to him for different reasons. each boy admires All Might for what they see of themselves in him. Izuku sees a hero who protects others and works to save them no matter what. and Katsuki sees a champion who never gives up and who always emerges victorious.

and what the story eventually goes on to explain is that these are two halves of the same hero. Spider-Man, who rescues people and brings them hope. and Goku, who always wins no matter what, and by doing so brings reassurance to others. these two aspects together make up the perfect, consummate hero which both Izuku and Katsuki aspire to be. and the story is about how they get there.

but it’s that how that’s really where things begin to get interesting. because as previously mentioned, Katsuki and Izuku each start out their respective journeys in very different places. their origins, their “starting lines” as the series sometimes puts it, are polar opposites of one another, and yet they both are heading for the same goal. they want the same thing, but to get there, they each have to journey from a different place.

and what that means is that right from the start, it was impossible for Izuku and Katsuki’s journeys to be the same. more than that, they’re not just different journeys, they’re the opposite journeys. if you start from two opposing ends of a path facing towards the same goal, the only way for you to reach that goal is by traveling in the exact opposite direction as the other person. as an illustration of this, please accept this visual aid which I drew with love:

so let’s continue to retrace each of their paths as the story progresses. we’ll start with Izuku first. his story begins when he receives One for All, a quirk that allows him to compete with other would-be heroes on equal ground for the first time. by this point he has already learned inner strength and compassion and selflessness. he already cares deeply about others. and so his trajectory now veers towards him learning what it means to be a champion. learning the things that Katsuki already knows.

and Izuku makes a lot of mistakes when he first starts out. he is too selfless. he rushes in to save others without sparing any thought for himself, resulting in repeated instances of him getting in over his head and getting injured and taking himself out of the fight. he almost gets himself expelled for this on the very first day of hero school, and Aizawa’s very first order of business is to chew him out over how irresponsible he is.

we see Izuku struggle to learn how to inspire others and be a leader, traits which happen to come to Katsuki naturally. Katsuki instinctively smiles when he’s up against a wall. he inspires others without even trying -- inspires them even in spite of his abrasive personality. but these are things which don’t come naturally to Izuku. Izuku is more inclined to follow than lead, because he doesn’t feel compelled to put himself in the spotlight, and because he is cooperative and will defer to others who are more aggressive about putting themselves in the leader role. Izuku doesn’t do the whole hero grin thing naturally, either; this is something he has to be coached on and consciously think about, and his early efforts are a bit hit-or-miss.

Izuku is more focused on saving people, and sometimes misses the fact that in order to do so, sometimes the best course of action is to just straight up beat the shit out of the bad guy(s). he learns this over the course of the series, and we see him doing the never-give-up thing against Muscular, and Overhaul, and Gentle. and Izuku’s selfless nature almost causes him to give up OFA to Mirio because he sees him as being more worthy; Mirio has to talk him out of it in order to stop him. in short, Izuku’s arc is all about him gradually learning confidence and becoming a badass.

now contrast this against Katsuki’s arc, which has the opposite trajectory. Katsuki starts out as someone who is already strong and confident. he is hard-working and driven and dedicated to his own self-improvement. he’s a prodigy when it comes to battle, and his determination to succeed inspires others to challenge and push themselves in order to keep up with him. 

he is a natural leader, and a terrible follower. and he completely overlooks the “saving people” aspect of being a hero in favor of the “kicking ass” part.

so now here’s the interesting thing. Izuku’s growth comes from achieving new things and gaining new abilities and skills. his growth comes from experiencing victory and success. but Katsuki’s growth takes the exact opposite path. as someone who has experienced success his entire life, Katsuki’s first steps toward progress only come once he starts experiencing failure for the very first time. it might seem counterintuitive, but his breakthroughs only come after he experiences setbacks. because just like Izuku needed to experience victory in order to grow, Katsuki needed to experience loss. just as Izuku needed to grow stronger, Katsuki needed to learn what it was like to experience weakness. without that understanding, his growth would have stagnated.

so from a certain perspective, the story’s treatment of Katsuki vs Izuku might not seem fair. Izuku constantly receives help while Katsuki only faces hindrances. Izuku’s strength only ever seems to increase, while Katsuki is repeatedly confronted by his own limitations. he’s attacked by villains. he’s kidnapped. he blames himself for his hero’s downfall. etc. etc. etc.

but the reason why Horikoshi keeps putting him through all these situations is because in order to have someone grow as a character, you need to have them slowly overcome their flaws. and it just so happens that Izuku and Katsuki’s flaws are the exact opposites of each other’s. and so when you think about it, it only makes sense that in order for them to develop, they’re going to need to take opposite routes. “what they lack” is completely different. and thus “what they need to gain” will also be completely different. this is something which has been very plainly laid out from the earliest chapters of the series...

...and which has been hammered into our heads over and over again ever since.

anyway! enough of my long-winded rambling. you get the point! Katsuki and Izuku have the same goal but are approaching it from opposite sides. just as they are mirrors of each other, so are their arcs mirrors of each other’s arcs. they balance each other out.

but now I’m going to add on a bit more to that, though, so just hear me out. yes, it’s very good and wonderful that they can do this. their strengths complement each other’s flaws; their weaknesses offset. the two of them can and will one day be unstoppable together, and all of that is cool and great and epic.

but it’s also limiting to think of the two of them solely in these kinds of terms; as half-formed individuals who can only be complete and whole when they’re by each other’s side. they are each still their own person as well! and in order for them to achieve this same kind of balance within themselves, they can’t just simply meet in the middle and be done with it. both of them need to continue to walk down their respective paths and experience each other’s side, not just their own. here, let me just break it down:

Deku: starts out quirkless -> learns humility and compassion and how to put others before himself -> gets a quirk -> learns how to be strong and win and inspire courage in others -> becomes a hero that both wins and saves.

Kacchan: starts out with a good quirk -> learns how to be strong and win and inspire courage in others -> ??? -> learns humility and compassion and how to put others before himself -> becomes a hero that both saves and wins.

ah. and now we finally get to our actual fucking point lol.

do you see?? they are perfect mirrors of each other, except for one critical juncture. Izuku grew up on Rescue Road, but the entrance to Beating Villains Boulevard was always barricaded off. until one day he finally got a quirk, and so was permitted entry. meanwhile, Katsuki has lived on BV Blvd his entire life, and until very recently he never even knew there was a Rescue Rd. and now that he finally does know, he’s been working very hard to get there, and has made many detours all over Plot Parkway, and has finally reached the point where he’s at least able to see the road that leads where he needs to go. but he still hasn’t gotten there yet. for him it’s still barricaded off in the same way that his road was once barricaded off to Izuku.

and there are other ways for him to gain access to this road. ways which involve far less pain and suffering, tbh! but the problem is, he’s never been the type of boy who has the patience for any of those other roads. he can’t be bothered to take the scenic route there. he’s in a rush. and so he keeps on trying to force his way past the barricade using brute strength and whatever other means he can think of, perhaps even trying to use the toll pass he got back on his own street (stay with me, metaphor; we’re in this till the bitter end now), thinking that if it worked over there, it should work for him here too. but it doesn’t. and the longer he keeps pressing up against this barricade, the more frustrated he becomes.

and meanwhile Izuku has already made himself at home over on Katsuki’s own street. and so that sure is annoying! except it turns out that by watching Izuku very closely, Katsuki can sort of get an idea of how they do things over on Izuku’s old street, just like Izuku once observed Katsuki and admired him as the closest he could get to being on BV Blvd himself. so at least that’s something. and the more Katsuki does observe and imitate him, the more he’s actually able to do a passing impression of a true Rescue Rd native. and maybe eventually he even starts thinking to himself, I don’t really need to go down this stupid road anyway, even though deep down he knows that the only route through to All Might Avenue is through that road. and also though, the other thing is that seeing as he’s only ever lived on his own street, he still thinks, even now, that his street is objectively the better of the two and the more important.

but that’s not how it works. the plain fact of the matter is that in order to get to All Might Ave you need to pass through both roads. if it was just Hero Highway that they were trying to reach? well then sure! that one’s easy. exit’s right over there. but they don’t want plain old Hero Highway. they want All Might Ave. they want to be the best heroes. they want to complete their respective character journeys. and to do that, Kacchan needs to find what he lacks. and to do that, he needs to gain access to this road.

so what I’m trying to say here is that because of who Katsuki is, and because of what his goal is, the surest and most logical way to complete his character arc is by bringing it around full circle as a mirror to Izuku’s. in order to fulfill his goal of becoming the best hero, Katsuki has to lose his quirk. it’s symmetry. it’s yin and yang. it’s equilibrium. in order to move forward he must first go back. in order to win, he has to lose. for him, this is the missing piece.

and just to clarify, because I feel like this needs to be said: this is not about “redemption through suffering”, though. it’s not “oh he deserves it for how he treated Izuku all those years ago.” and it’s not “let’s make the audience feel sorry for poor little Kacchan so that they feel more sympathetic towards him”, either. that’s not it at all! because the thing is, this isn’t about punishment; this is about fulfillment. this isn’t angst for the sake of angst. this is about placing a very deliberately and meticulously crafted obstacle in front of him for the purpose of forcing him to learn how to overcome it.

because he will overcome it. this is Bakugou fucking Katsuki. he is not fragile. he is not delicate or frail. and so for anyone who’s worried this might be a crushing mental blow? I think you just might be underestimating him.

that’s not to say it won’t be grueling for him, mind. losing his quirk would mean coming face to face with the very real possibility of losing his dream too. because society doesn’t believe that people without quirks can be heroes. Katsuki himself never believed that someone without a quirk could be a hero.

but you know who did believe that? because he had to believe it, growing up, because no one else believed in him?

yeah. that’s right.

you see, for Izuku, his own intrinsic worth isn’t inherently tied to his quirk, because growing up he never had a quirk. now contrast that with Katsuki, whose own sense of self-worth is completely wrapped up in his quirk, his strength, his natural talent. Katsuki, who grew up being told how amazing his quirk was, and believing that the hierarchy of the world around him meant that having a good quirk placed him above other who didn’t. and who consequently also grew up with a correspondingly huge fear of failure, because his sense of security and fulfillment is contingent on his being strong. and if that were ever to change, to him that would mean a total loss of everything he is, everything he’s ever known, and everything he is striving to be.

“lol I thought you just said this wouldn’t be the crushing blow for him”, and yeah, lol, fair enough. but this is also exactly why it’s so important for him to finally face this fear head on. because even though it frightens him, even though it would devastate him, I don’t think it would defeat him. rather, I think that once he came to terms with what had happened and accepted it, he would do what he always does. he would rise back up.

because in spite of what he has always feared, he isn’t weak. and so even though losing his quirk would be harrowing, I think that, if done right, it could also be liberating and even empowering. because it’s him facing his fears. it’s an obstacle to overcome for the sake of him realizing that he can overcome it. because him being quirkless is not, in fact, the end of the world.

because his strength isn’t in his quirk -- it’s in his spirit. exactly like the boy he once secretly feared. exactly the same as Izuku.

so yeah. that’s basically it. tl;dr Deku and Kacchan are on opposite vectors and Katsuki’s is becoming particularly hazardous to navigate at the moment, but what at first glance seems to be a potential death blow could in fact be the thing that finally propels him forward towards where he wants to go and who he truly wants to be. and I am here for it. I want my boy to find himself some enlightenment. and then to rise back up again like the badass he is.

My Thoughts On Chapter 257 and Why I Think The Bakudeku Dynamic Is Still Fundamentally Broken

[Spoilers and Bakugo-Bashing ahead. Long post. Avoid if you don't want to see.]

Look, I can kind of see why people enjoy the idea of Izuku and Katsuki making up and being friends again after all the crap Katsuki did. Honestly, if Horikoshi had set it up right, I might have been rooting for them, too. Of course, I don't root for it, because I don't see much improvement in the dynamic, especially on Katsuki's part.

Before I get started, remember: if you like the dynamic between Izuku and Bakugo, that's fine. This post probably isn't for you, and that's fine, too. I'm not writing this post to attack anyone personally, but if you feel offended, feel free to ignore this post and go about your day. I'd like it if we could be respectful of one another's opinions. Sound good? Good.

Now, let's begin...

So the big thing in this chapter (257 chapters, dear God...) is that we're finally learning a bit more about the OFA Holders. For starters, we now know the Black Whip user's name: Banjo Daigoro (heads up, the "Go (五)" in Daigoro means "Five," continuing the trend of OFA Holders having their wielder number in their names). We've also learned that Nana's Quirk was "Float" or "Levitation," which makes a lot of sense.

(I mean, Flight is one of the most iconic superpowers besides super strength, and since Nana is Izuku's metaphorical grandmother, it's incredible for her to be using such a by the book super power. Plus, it only compliments her friendship with Gran Torino, another hero with a flight Quirk.)

I'm rambling at this point. As intriguing as the Quirks of the previous holders is, my attention (as well as other readers' attention) was pulled towards Katsuki. Most say that the relationship between Katsuki and Izuku was adorable in this chapter. Others say Katsuki was a gremlin, but they still love him for it.

Well, pardon my pessimism, but if I'm using the phrase right, it looks like I'm gonna be playing devil's advocate.

[Keep in mind, the official translations haven't dropped yet, so this might screw up my analysis a bit.]

There's another meeting about OFA between Izuku, Toshinori, and of course Katsuki. Toshinori talks a bit about how he couldn't find everything for the previous holders, and what does Katsuki say?

If you don't know it then just leave it at that, I'm waisting my precious time on you guys.

There are a handful of other rude/passive-aggressive ways Katsuki could have phrased that. He could have made it sound like "That's nice and all, but could we skip to the important stuff?" But no, even though this information is crucial to Izuku, even though Katsuki has every right to just stay out of the room since the conversation won't benefit him, he says they're wasting his "precious time." Once again, Katsuki is being self-centered, but that isn't anything new.

A little later, Katsuki is taking a loom at the notebook, and he remarks that all the Quirks Izuku got must have been lame. Katsuki is immediately writing the Quirks off just because they aren't upfront with their badassery. Izuku appreciates all Quirks because he wasn't born with one, but Katsuki only appreciates strong Quirks because that's what society and his own self image have taught him up to this point.

Think of it this way: A man with diamonds can't understand why a man is happy with silver, but a man with nothing understands the value of both.

Katsuki's Quirk is admittedly versatile and efficient, and I can respect the work he put into it. However, immediately dissing less flashy Quirk's might be his downfall. Characters like Sir Nighteye don't have "powerful" Quirks, but are still capable adversaries thanks to how they use them in tandem with their other abilities. Foresight might not be a powerful Quirk in a fight, but Nighteye's own strategy, deceivingly ripped physique, and his high-density stamps help round him out as a capable opponent. We've seen Izuku utilize Black Whip in ways which can be definitely declared badass. Even Nana's Quirk can be used in incredible ways, especially considering Izuku's strategy and relentnesses.

Speaking of Nana's Quirk, here comes the part I hate the most...

Lots of readers talk about how Katsuki and Izuku's dynamic has grown a lot since their middle school days. That's not to say the statement isn't true, because there has been some growth, but I feel like most of it is exaggerated. Katsuki and Izuku haven't had an introspection (or at least a meaningful one) on themselves where they've come to grips with their faults and have vowed to change for the better. Izuku doesn't stop to think that maybe Katsuki shouldn't have treated him the way he did since they were kids, because Izuku's more concerned about heroism, mastering OFA, and (ugh) proving to Katsuki that he'll surpass him, being his image of victory. Katsuki hasn't really thought about his actions aside from that one time after the Provisional License Exams that ultimately amounted to nothing. It's been said time and time again by several in the fandom that Katsuki hasn't really changed, and for as much growth (or lack thereof) as he's had throughout the entire course of the series, the statement is not without merit. Case and point: the very first thing Katsuki spits out to Izuku when All Might reveals Nana's Quirk?

I WON!

He's more concerned about his own image and pride then about Izuku's progress. He's already got flight down, so instead of leaving it at that or (highly unlikely) offering to help Izuku figure out the whole flight thing, he decides it's a great thing that Izuku will waste his time learning something Katsuki already knows so Katsuki can make sure he can beat Izuku yet again. He's not adding anything to the conversation, and while Izuku isn't personally bothered, Katsuki's next words are not okay, even if they're relatively tame.

Before you tell me that Katsuki is just trying to encourage Izuku or something like that along those lines, let's take a look at their proceeding dialogue:

T-that's not true! I'll just master it and catch up to you!!

You're just going to panic again! Explode and go to Hell!

Buy I managed to get the gist of Blackwhip, so...

DIE!!

No hesitation...!

...Katsuki is not being encouraging in any way, shape, or form. He's being discouraging; in spite of Izuku's protest, Katsuki insists that Izuku is going to crash and burn once more. Never mind that Izuku isn't bothered by it, what Katsuki is saying is not okay. No one can be the best but him, so no one can improve... including Izuku. Forget about Izuku's previous feats, forget the fact that he learned to use the base Quirk without damaging himself AND a second Quirk in less than a year. As long as Katsuki can pull ahead, stupid Deku won't be able to catch up and he'll prove that he'll forever be the best.

...can you feel my frustration with this character?

And then there are the panels where Izuku looks like he reading the journal, and Katsuki is making a gremlin face while make the "kill" gesture across his neck, and All Might's looking at it like it's something precious. Other people called this scene adorable, but for me, it only proves that Katsuki hasn't changed and WHY he hasn't changed. He still treats Izuku as someone lesser instead of as an equal; he might not be Quirkless anymore, but for Katsuki, Izuku just another extra to surpass. And then Izuku tries to be civil with Katsuki, but... the boy really does not care about him. And then people like All Might don't know the full depth of their relationship and consider this a massive improvement, and see no reason to confront Katsuki or Izuku about their issues.

Seriously, the narrative is so contrived in Katsuki's favor, I'm losing hope that Horikoshi will ever try to fix it properly.

And before you give me Izuku's whole spiel about:

I never thought the day would come where I could speak so naturally with Kacchan.

NARRATORS! CAN! BE! BIASED!!!

Just because Izuku is the protagonist and overall honest does not mean his views/relationship with Katsuki are ultimately well. I'm not saying he's an unreliable narrator, since he hasn't really gone to Delusion City as he's told us the story, but it's very clear that he doesn't give Katsuki's actions too much thought. Him suddenly being able to talk casually with Katsuki is not a major feat: EVERYONE ELSE can casually talk to Katsuki just as well even if his personality is, quoting Denki, "flaming crap mixed with sewage." At this point, I'm just tuning out all the times the narrative tries to claim that Izuku is completely mentally sound, or that Katsuki has made significant progress.

You can keep shouting it from every roof top you want to, but unless you're showing CONSISTENCY, you're not showing substance.

So, TL;DR This chapter continues to push the Bakudeku rival dynamic while instead showing how Katsuki has ultimately barely changed and is continually enabled by other characters and the narrative to continue his behavior because virtually everyone around him has an abnormally high tolerance for his bulls***.

right so in response so this post where i basically said “AfO can’t be trusted to know much about the ofa quirk, because he either should have been able to see it before giving him the stockpile- as he and other afo-users can see OfA even though they can’t steal it so the original pass-on should have worked as well, or the brother didn’t have an original quirk to see and AfO was wrong in his explanation- whichever it is he doesn’t know whats going on.”

Unless he knew First’s “hidden” quirk all along and just played along with his game so he could convince OFA to be passed down. Unless he planned from the start to have a power he could wield, and an accumulative power he could control, one he did not have to go through the trouble of wielding himself, one he could pass down to his successors. Unless he got too cocky and wasn’t expecting First’s vestige to block any attempts he made to steal it from the later generations.

Unless he forgot how stubborn his brother is, just like him. We’ve already mentioned that AFO’s vestige could be in the quirk, something that originally haunted First when he wielded OFA—who’s to say that it isn’t there? That AFO expected that he could control the future users, or even manipulate them through his vestige, without realizing that the tool—his brother—he’d used to create the power he wanted was the sole reason he couldn’t take advantage of it later?

So now i’m just like

1- that’s terrifying as a possibility because it means a real chessmaster laying a plan and really getting into the manipulation of his brother, more so than we thought previously, but does make First’s spiteful ghost that much more awesome and would, say, make a dfo wherein he’s using izuku as a tool to get ofa cut even deeper

2- im now like imagining AFO like, peeking into the vault or awkwardly coming in because he’s trying to see if the quirks have merged and his brother has figured anything out without giving his plan away and the mental image is amusing

3- i’m lowkey going crazy eyes like,,,,,,, is this a clue to perhaps imaginary lore?

Ooooo hell yeah, here we go. I love this AU (LINK) for those curious, it’s an AU wherein Izuku is hit with a quirk while saving katsuki that turns him into- essentially- a Nightfury and it is FANTASTIC.

--Izuku would like to know why it’s always him. Like. Every time.

Kacchan, Hitoshi, Monoma, and Aizawa would ALSO like to have words with whatever is Targeting Izuku, b.c nine times out of ten, they get dragged along WITH him, and some of this stuff is RIDICULOUS 

Falling though a dimension portal is not fun.

--Thankfully Izuku can fly, and everyone involved is rather good at adjusting themselves midair for NightFury Flight Acrobatics, and everyone is relatively safe when they glide to the ground (Izuku still isnt fully grown, and handling FOUR people at one time, three larger, hero course fit males, and one full grown pro hero male was NOT as easy as it someday would be.

--But they all land, and no one is dead so NAILED IT.

--And then they see the others.

The other students. The Other Aizawa-sensei. The other Them. Everyone is frozen, staring at each other, both aizawa’s moving in front of their students, and eyeing each other for anything threatening, but the students?

-Izuku, Katsuki, Hitoshi, and Monoma are frozen, staring at the student to the side of the Other Aizawa. The student with green hair and eyes, who sparks like Katsuki does in their world, and they can’t breathe.

--Katsuki almost bursts into tears. That’s Izuku. THATS IZUKU.. THAT’S A HUMAN, GROWING IZUKU WHO DIDN’T SAVE HIM AT THE COST OF HIS HUMAN FORM.

That’s what his best friend, his brother, is supposed to look like

That’s what he would look like, if Katsuki had been faster-

--Hitoshi stares. He’s seen the very rare baby/childhood photos from Before of Izuku. He’d eventually earned the right to be shown them. Seeing Izuku human was...strange. When he scanned over the class in front of him he noticed a few things:

One: He was not present

Two: Monoma was not present

Three: Katsuki was much more...aggressive and angry. He wasn’t...balanced, wasn’t as stable.

Forth: From the sparks coming of Human!Izuku, he was the one who has Toshi’s One for All.

--Aizawa has never been so glad for Nedzu’s stupid code lessons for UA teachers. Now if only he could be certain they held true here, wherever here was.

“It’s a code TL-2377-D.”

Small mercies,  the other him straightens up after a moment where he can see himself flipping through codes. (Time Lapse 2377-Dimensional)

“Forced or Accidental?” 

Aizawa growls “Forced.”

--They don’t get much further than that when the air above their heads rips open, and the villain who had forced the dimension hop falls through.

--Izuku lets out a territorial, furious shriek and all the Others flinch at it, but the travelers react to it as they are meant to.

Aizawa turns, body braced, Monoma falls back to his side, hand  out and pressing into Aizawa’s neck, to copy his quirk. Katsuki throws himself up with his explosions, even as Izuku launches himself into the vertical climb that is still just as impressive as always. As soon as Izuku has enough lift and straightens out a bit, Katsuki falls into place on his back, and Hitoshi’s scarf flies upward, caught in a paw, before he hauls himself into his place at Katsuki’s back.

-They are focused and devastating. Monoma and Aizawa have their fair share of fighting too, capture scarf, carefully timed Erasure between the two of them, so that the villain never has more than a small moment of free quirk use.

Afterwards  you are totally right there’s a FLIP OUT when it comes out that Deku is a NIGHTFURY, bc HTTYD IS totally a famous movie set in this verse.

Deku rants about the quirk opportunities, as he is always liable to do, and Izuku rants RIGHT BACK and kacchan and Hitoshi and the others despair bc theres TWO OF THEM, and they’re both at Max Mumble speed but they can understand each other (bc at this point Dragon Izuku has TOTALLY got a high tech voice-corder thing from Mei that  can keep up, and BONUS he will later have vocal recordings of what his ACTUAL VOICE is/was supposed to sound like, you bet he’s gonna use that later) 

(On that note, Katsuki has a mental emotional upheaval the first time he hears DEKU”S VOICE- he’d almost forgotten what it sounded like WHEN HAD THAT HAPPENED, when had he FORGOTTEN- b/c he hasnt heard the RIGHT voice, IZUKU’S VOICE since they were children and this is....a lot)

Two Izuku who can BOUNCE IDEAS off each other at light speed with their genius minds able to follow the other’s leaps of logic are TERRIFYING for EVERYONE INVOLVED.

--Katsuki takes this time to have a TALK with his counterpart, b.c he recognizes all the rage, and spite and everything he had come to HATE about his younger self in this teen version of him. He can see it’s improved, but it’s....horrifying to see what he could have been without the things that happened to him, and if he can save THIS version of himself from having to suffer like he did to learn it? He’s going to. Even if he has to beat it into his own skull.

--Hitoshi takes this chance to talk to the OTHER Aizawa, ask if he was mentoring him HERE as well (answer is yes, NICE) and then offer advice. He can’t say THIS him wouldn’t be different, Probably would be, since he didn’t appear to have the support system Hitoshi did, but he can still offer it.

--Monoma takes a moment to chat, and learns very quicky that THIS version of him is still ABSOLUTELY suffering the complex of his younger years, with no Monster Trio to knock him out of it, and welcome him anyway.

He hands out advice on how to handle him, and answers what questions he feels he can, just in case this world is much different than his own. Hopefully SOMEONE can knock him out of it in the trio’s place since he’s not here for Monoma to do it himself.

--Basically everyone takes this as a giant learning opportunity and Izuku gives everyone who’s brave enough to ask a ride on his back, bc he gets it.

Hello Gentry, I hope when you receive this it is not while in the dead of night or at the crack of dawn, as I do not know your time zone, but quest-giving never truely ends so I do hope this finds you well. The fic I am searching for this time involves Izuku deciding that one of his reasons for becoming a hero was to keep Bakugo in second place to him out of spite. He has OFA, and it involves a good serving of Iida-Deku friendship after Iida apologies for what he said on the day of the entrance exam, resulting in Izuku deciding to keep him off of his ‘mental shit-list’ is the only really way it can be described. In the most recent chapters when I last read it, Uraraka was the one to fight Bakugo during the battle test instead of Midoriya, resulting in her gaining heavy scarring because of his gauntlet, and later on Izuku snaps at Bakugo because of how much of a pretentious asshole he is. There’s also a scene where Iida and Izuku get ice cream to distract themselves over the stress brought about by their friend getting seriously injured. If your fic finders would kindly accept this quest as they have the ones I have sent their way in the past, I would mighty grateful.

Because I only got caught back up to the manga recent-ish, so me n @guardianlioness got to hammer out a whole bunch of details on that end out while we were conferrin’ about this

Also also, spoilers abound bc of some names I’m dropping! If you haven’t made it through that one League of Villains arc with the Liberation Army and don’t want spoilers, this isn’t the post for you.

So in the much broader sense, we’ve at least discussed the history of One for All and All for One to some degree over here, but we’re gonna expand, add, and shift stuff around a smidge probably, in actual AU context. The important tl;dr is basically that the League is just a group that opposes the users of One for All after a vendetta when One for All first manifested, and All for One (who henceforth will be referred to as AfO, probably, because although Shigaraki’s his name it’d be confusing, I think, to just leap wholesale into that) was the child of Izuku’s as-of-yet unspoken of OfA mentor, who was assumed dead along with the rest of the mentor’s family but was instead taken in by Tomura (as we’ll be calling Mr. Shimura Tenko from here on out, to try and reduce confusion still and also bc in the beginning he didn’t have the name Shigaraki ) when Tomura lead the league to wreck OfA mentor’s shit bc he’s petty like that.

Now I don’t necessarily need to get into the big details – for the sake of brevity, I’ll make a separate post on AfO, his goals, the brother whomst he loves a lot that we’re giving him for canon parallels in spite of how much we’ve already bungled stuff up, and AfO’s relationship with Toshinori now that that’s all been hashed out – but I do want to point out that, for a time AfO was unaware that Tomura was the one who destroyed his home, only that Tomura was there and saved him and his little brother. OfA mentor hid/went underground/stopped using their family name of Shigaraki after the rest of the family died in grief, so Tomura used that to persuade AfO to not run back to his parent until AfO was swayed to his side, so to speak.

For the most part, Tomura and AfO’s relationship in Ageswap is something of a twist again on canon. See, and this is fun because we love drawing those lines between characters, Tomura (in both Ageswap and canon) is a fascinating emotional sort, both in relation to his mentor/student AfO, but ALSO to Izuku, who does studies on quirks and mumbles a lot and has incredible observational skills, whereas Toshinori is a beast of instinct and feeling, which again foils him to the far more calculating AfO and his logical student! That is to say, the parallels are criss-crossing: Toshinori could be attributed towards Tomura, where AfO could be towards Izuku. Now, obviously, it’s not a 1:1 ratio because nothing is, but it means that when we flip the dynamic we get something just as dysfunctional and unhealthy as in canon, but in a totally different way!

Tomura’s something of the Worst Mentor Slash Elder Sib Figure Ever in this world. He’s a hot mess to AfO’s young meticulousness, and through him AfO kind of. learns to live a little, so to speak. Or at least, relax and also take what he deserves w his quirk bc hey, he has the power, why not?

The general attitude we’re giving Tomura in this AU is kind of…. unnervingly touchy-feely or close physically, esp given what his quirk is. AfO isn’t quite so scared of it, because it’s Tomura, who’s a beloved teacher and friend, but it’s something of a (possibly unintentional, haven’t decided) way for Tomura to keep the League metaphorically close. Because he acts so relaxed and familial, it draws the League together and makes them less inclined to leave, later. And even if they wanted to, well… Tomura’s right there, and we all know what his quirk is. The relationships he’s fostering are just as unhealthy as in canon, just differently.

I think the dynamic might be that Tomura’s encouraging AfO to go apeshit, basically. Kind of like “you have this quirk you barely use/barely know about, and you can do all these things, so why don’t you?” ish, pushing him to overhaul a world/society that condemns his quirkless brother and keep his own power so tightly wrapped he suffers, you know? There’s a weird extra-close obviously openly familial aspect to the League, which is meant to parallel how awkward Izuku is with Toshinori and how they maintain a distance even though they also care and love each other a lot, and it has everything to do with the way Tomura acts and holds himself. Also, the League all refers to him as Tomura in private, to kind of…. sit on those close pseudofam vibes.

As for what AfO thinks of his mentor… well, AfO is the one who offered his family name “Shigaraki” for Tomura to use, a name that even Izuku hadn’t known because his own mentor never told him in their attempt to separate from their grief. So, you tell me what his thoughts might be.

Reasoning for TLWA 25

Spoilers under the cut for the story

Ok, so I've been getting reviews from day one telling me NOT to have Izuku accept One For All and then what do I turn around and do? But it was intentional and I just kind of want to explain it.

First off, this was the intention from the start. The title refers not only to Izuku taking the long way around to heroism but to OFA as well. But as I wrote the story, I found that I didn't want to give Izuku the miracle quirk. I was proud of how far he'd come and I didn't want to take away from that. But I racked my brains and couldn't come up with a good reason to have him refuse the quirk:

1. All Might and Izuku are still basically the same as canon

Despite surface differences, the characters are still essentially the same and thus could be expected to behave in similar manners. All Might was always going to view Izuku as a worthy successor, the question became would Izuku accept? This Izuku may be more spiteful and recklessly determined to prove himself but he's still essentially the same boy who accepted OFA after the sludge incident.

2. Izuku won't let his pride get in the way of being the best hero possible

This was my main reason Izuku why couldn't refuse All Might's offer. He's proud of how far he's come without a quirk and he knows he can be a hero by himself. But he's also smart and he knows the power All Might has, if Izuku could have 1 person alone he could save 100 with OFA. While I debated back and forth, the inner Izuku told me that he'd never let his ego stop him from being a better hero

3. All Might needs to get rid of his quirk fast, Izuku can see it

By holding onto OFA longer than in canon, All Might is in rougher shape. It's mentioned a few times but he's also not really able to teach at this point and he’s much weaker. All Might tries not to let his health affect Izuku's decision but there really is a limit to how much longer Toshi can hold out for. Izuku knows this and he understands that if he refuses, All Might will need to keep searching and maybe, just maybe, run out of time.

3. Izuku is becoming a different sort of hero and he doesn’t really like it

While Izuku is proud of what he’s accomplished on his own, the type of heroing he’s doing is very different from what he imagined as a child. He’s being spiteful and angry, he had to use extreme violence to escape both the Hero Killer and the LoV and then went behind everyone’s backs to spill the secrets of Hosu. Izuku still dreams of being like All Might but this... this is something else and Izuku isn’t sure he wants to be that kind of hero. Despite his reservations, Izuku is secretly relieved to have a chance to be more of an All Might and less of an Aizawa (if only due to those darn childhood dreams)

4. Quirk or no, Izuku is still going to keep doing his thing

This is how Izuku justifies it to himself. Yes, he's worried about adjusting to a new quirk, worried about the reaction of the world, but he tries to tell himself that he won't change. He still lived 16 years without a quirk, he won't let OFA erase all those years of suffering and discrimination. He's going to continue to be an advocate and push for policy changes. And if people attack him for being a liar well, that just makes his case more visible. See point 2.

But honestly, the main point of Izuku taking OFA is that it’s supposed to be a bit disappointing and unsatisfactory. Izuku accepts it but there’s still consequences for the action and even I don’t know what the right choice is. There may not even be one right choice. The thing is, it was what I believed the characters would do in this situation and, as an author, I couldn’t ignore that.

Alrighty I’m gonna ramble about a DekuBaku roleswap because I have ideas and I almost never hear about OFA!Bakugo unless it’s a Villian!Deku AU so lets go (Probably ooc for a lot of characters and things so apologies) -

So yeah in this AU Katsuki is the one who’s quirkless

Which means a lot of bullying

Especially from kids who had at that point been practically worshiping the ground he walked on and are now basically treating him like an untouchable kids are mean

Which also means a very angry and pissed off kid Katsuki dealing with all this the only way how - being pissed at everyone and lots of yelling

But he’ll be damned if it let’s being quirkless get in the way of him becoming the number one hero

Basically, If Izuku’s desire to be a hero is fueled by pure, plain determination, Katsuki’s is fueled by pure, unadulterated spite

“Why are you trying so hard to be a hero?” “Cause fuck’em, that’s why.”

Beside’s if All Might can never lose to villains, than why should Katsuki lose to his quirklessness? Heroes never lose and neither does Bakugou.

Speaking of Izuku, his quirk takes a pretty long time to actually manifest (A whole year after his entire class developed their own), so he relatively stays in the same boat as Bakugou until a certain point

Even after Katsuki’s quirkless status was revealed, Izuku has not only stuck with him but actively stood up for him (I refuse to believe Izuku would EVER pull the stuff Katsuki did in canon if their roles were swapped. He would stick by him no matter what and he would defend his right to be a hero even if he got a punch in the face (from Bakugou) for it), 

But aside from that the initial relationship remained like it did in canon (with Izuku constantly following after Katsuki and Katsuki constantly being seemingly “better” than Izuku at everything). There’s still some tension though because the only thing squarely keeping Izuku under Katsuki and still his friend socially is this and the fact his quirk hasn’t manifested yet, and he knows it.

This is not helped by Izuku obsession with quirks either

The forrest scene is precisely where the Bakudeku friendship overturns as it’s at the moment Katsuki falls off the log that Izuku’s quirk manifests (I like to think if Izuku ever had a quirk, he’d inherit Inko’s), with him accidentally using it to try and save him

This sets Bakugou off, not just because Izuku saved him, with a quirk, but because despite now having a quirk, Izuku’s behavior hasn’t change. He’s still trying to help him; and Bakugo can’t understand why.

Especially since the other kids who were supposedly Bakugou’s “friends” up and left the moment Bakugou wasn’t worth something for them to follow anymore. 

Which leads Bakugou (with a year’s worth of bullying, societal conditioning, and questioning Izuku’s sincerity) coming to the (incorrect) conclusion that now that his quirk has manifested, he will eventually leave, joining the “winners” while Bakugou is left behind. Izuku is capable of standing above him now and has no reason to stay with a “loser”

And it particularly stings because Izuku is his friend supposed to be a “loser” too - the kid who can’t use “big kid” kanjis, who tries to skip stones but they just sink in the water, who can’t bounce balls as high he can, and constantly trails after Bakugou talking about how cool and amazing he is. Someone like that developing the power you’re told you’re never going to develop ever would maybe sting a little for a little kid.  

For the first time since hearing he was quirkless, Bakugou feels like he has “lost”. And we all know how Pre-character development Bakugou feels about losing. 

It ends as you expect - Bakugou ends his friendship with Izuku and takes every opportunity to fight him and prove himself better and has warped it around his desire to be a hero as well. He is determined to “beat” Izuku no matter what.

Meanwhile, Izuku’s best friend hates him now and he can’t understand what he did wrong. He does try to fix things, and he still tries to help out Katsuki when the bullying gets worse

Which weirdly eggs Bakugou on more for whatever reason.

Years pass. Enter: the slime incident

I imagine while he now lacks the status necessary for the teachers/adults in his life (outside of his parents) to enable the behavior that gave us Chapter1!Bakugou, all the bullying/passive agressive comments give Bakugou a lot of anger issues that he doesn’t deal with in a healthy manner. At all. He’s basically a ball of anger and hurt with none of the school staff really knowing how to deal with him. Izuku, on the the other hand, now with a quirk and no years of being bullied/abused by Bakugou has become more social/open, even if he’s still shy. He manages to just stay under the radar and fade back since he’s just really quiet and considered a “nerd” that doesn’t really need his class’s attention. Like, the only thing that gets him any semi-focus is his interactions with Katsuki

Izuku still meets All Might first, he just doesn’t get to see his real form.

Katsuki takes learning the truth about All Might weirdly...well. I mean, naturally he’d be upset and confused at first but, after letting the info settle, he gets why he did it, and then kind of admires him for it because even with a freaking hole in his stomach All Might never stopped being a hero and continued winning his fights and still helped people and - Katsuki’s just blown away by how dedicated this man is to being the number one hero for everyone.

Now you’re probably (rightfully) asking yourselves - “Why would All Might give Bakugou of all people One For All?”

Because for whatever reason, Toshinari sees an actual genuine desire to become a hero under all that cursing and undirected rage and a potential to make it real, and dammit he’s going to make it real!

He also sees a frustrated and angry kid society just left on the wayside because he can’t make his hands explode sorry Kacchan you’re getting Dadded whether you like it or not

A lot of the training also includes attempted anger management talks between them since Katsuki is an angry little shit and the last thing Toshi needs to hear is that his student punch down a building because someone bumped him

The enterance exam is pretty normal minus Bakugou freaking everyone out with his mangled arm (that barely stops him from continuing the test and only stops when forcibly removed to get medical treatment).

Katsuki manages to get a pretty high hero score, he probably waits until he finds the high point robots gathered and then SMASH!

Izuku somehow accidentally gets the highest rescue points by helping other students avoid getting crushed by debris and everyone else’s attacks

Izuku is pretty interested in how Katsuki managed to suddenly develop a Quirk but he’s also very happy and proud that his childhood friend can attend classes with him and finally achieve his dream (which Katsuki hates)

The ranking test is so wild! Bakugou spends the entire time trying to one-up everyone and Izuku is barely scraping by but trying his best and Aizawa is just exhausted with everyone let the man rest please

Katsuki barely (And I mean BARELY) manages to keep himself from simply being expelled on virtue of his being a little shit due to showing that yes - he is capable of being serious about his becoming a hero and number one hero at that, but does tells him to get his head out of his ass if he wants to succeed

The hero/villain practice battle goes...badly

teamups are as in canon, only instead Izuku and Uraraka go after Iida immediately as they deem him a higher priority target. They’re winning at first, then Katsuki shows up.

and he is primed and ready to unleash about 10 years worth of pent up feelings on Izuku and anyone who gets in his way.

The entire thing is a mess - walls are crashing, fists are flying, someone is definitely crying. It’s a back and forth of Katsuki trying to kill Izuku and Izuku trying very very hard not to die

Things don’t really seems too bad (even with everything) until Katsuki actually knocks away (and out) Iida for trying to stop him cause friend pal you’re being a little extra there it’s just a test friend.

All Might almost stops the test until Izuku barely manages to grab a win by the skin of his teeth (mainly by taking advantage of the fact of Katsuki not paying any attention to the damage he’s doing to their surroundings and Ochako sacrificing reaching the objective to help Izuku), though officially his team still loses for not “stopping the bomb”

Everyone is both thoroughly impressed and greatly terrified (Of who though - no one knows)

Katsuki’s self hatred doubles because not only did he lose (a win by technicality is no win in his book), but he brought the loss on himself by letting his anger override everything.

Izuku, to his surprise, does not hold it against him. He’s always thought Katsuki is strong and the fight proved it with how well he’s done with a quirk he’s obviously not 100% used to and how hard he’s pushing to get ahead of everyone he’s however still terrified of how close he was to possibly dying though. In actuality the fight made him realize that he’s been kind of relying too much on the fact his quirk is “weak” and has encouraged him to work harder to get on the same level as everyone

and Katsuki, in all his Katsuki-ness, is both livid and frustrated cause dammit Deku how dare you say something that...nice!? And Katsuki has renewed his goal of being number one Hero and leaving Izuku in the dust and he’s going to do it properly so he better watch out

Dadmight is, of course, proud of this self-reflection, but still has to be Dad first (”I’m not mad Bakugou my boy, just disappointed”)

as for your question, it’s a bit complicated. my answer is both yes and no. I’ll start with the “no” part, I guess.

so here’s the thing: I absolutely, 100% fully support All Might’s decision to keep OFA secret. I really can’t stress this enough -- this is not something they were keeping hidden for funsies. “the Power Of All Might is something that can be shared and passed on from person to person, and he gave it to a fifteen-year-old boy” is not just something to be spread around lightly; if it got out to the wrong person, it could literally destroy Izuku’s life.

to the villains, he becomes a target, as we’ve already seen. we’re talking about the power of All Might for fuck’s sake. of course he’s a target. it’s the one power that can stand up to even All for One himself. villains would be coming after him pretty much every day of the week. if they don’t know about the “OFA can only be given up willingly” part, they simply try to take the quirk by force. but if they do know about it, that makes it even worse, because that’s when they start getting into methods of coercing him. hostages; torture; you name it. give us OFA or we’ll kill these innocent people. give us OFA or we’ll hurt your family and friends. his mom would have to go into hiding. he would never be safe again.

to the general public, and to agencies like the HPSC, Izuku becomes the subject of heated political controversy, and a potential government pawn. how could All Might do something so irresponsible as entrusting the greatest power in the world into the hands of a quirkless fifteen-year-old?? now the world is left without its Symbol of Peace, and with no one who’s ready to step in and fill those shoes. why didn’t he give OFA to someone with more power, more experience? this is unacceptable. Izuku should give it up to someone else. Hawks, or Best Jeanist, or Endeavor. people are very easily whipped into a frenzy; all it would take is a few viral opinion pieces, and the nation would probably be demanding the government to step in and force Izuku to relinquish it. some citizens might even take it upon themselves to try and capture him if they got desperate enough. even the other pros would probably be pressuring him. as for the HPSC, I wouldn’t put it past them to try and take control/custody of Izuku themselves and claim that it’s a matter of national security or whatnot. they’d have the best of intentions of course. just trying to keep the world safe. but they’re trending much more Hydra than S.H.I.E.L.D. these days, so who knows how badly that could end.

to Izuku’s schoolmates and friends, he becomes one of two things; either the object of mistrust or envy, or else someone to be protected at all costs. for most of them it would be the latter, since they really are good kids. but there’d be some people -- not in his class perhaps, but it’s a big school -- who’d no doubt be echoing the same thoughts as the public at large. he doesn’t deserve it, he’s not strong enough, etc., you get the idea. and if and when the villain attacks and threats -- “give us OFA or else” -- inevitably began to crop up as mentioned, all of the blame would fall down on him. “just give it to someone else who can handle it. why are you so selfish. this isn’t just about you; you’re putting everyone else in danger.”

and for the ones who don’t turn on him, who stay by his side and defend him, there’s still the fact that doing so puts them in danger as well. these kids are heroes. and if you entrust a hero with something that must be protected at all costs, they will protect it. at all costs. which is yet another burden to add to Izuku’s shoulders as now it’s not only his own safety he has to fear for, but that of his friends and loved ones. and if anything happened to them because of him, that’s not something he would ever get over.

so yeah. it’s insanely dangerous. and none of the above is even taking into account that there is a traitor at U.A., and they still don’t know who it is. so given all of that, it’s no wonder All Might insisted that Deku keep it a secret. and then of course Deku went and told Kacchan anyway, which even Kacchan was mad about once he realized the gravity of what he’d been told. but at least Kacchan is someone Deku’s known literally as long as he can remember, and there’s virtually no chance of him being a secret traitor. the same cannot be said for almost anyone else. we all know that they can be trusted, yes. but All Might doesn’t know that. even Aizawa, who is the one other person I’d argue should still have been told, was still a prime suspect in the traitor investigation due to him being one of the few people who could have communicated the information about the class schedule and the training camp’s whereabouts. we know he is not the traitor. we know he would literally die for any one of these kids. but the other characters do not know that for sure, and even Aizawa himself would probably agree that the rational thing under those circumstances would be to trust absolutely no one, with no exceptions. it’s the safest thing to do for Izuku’s sake in a situation where there is relatively little to be gained from telling other people, and potentially everything to lose by doing so. again, we already know there is at least one person in or linked to class 1-A who is not what they seem, who has managed to earn the trust of everyone, and who is connected to the League. that is just not a situation you can afford to fuck around with. “well we really like all these kids a lot and we’ve gotten to know them and we’re pretty sure they’re all on the up and up” is just not good enough when we are literally talking about a matter of life and death for a sixteen-year-old child.

so that’s the “no” part of my answer. I don’t think the secret should be shared. or at least, that would have been my answer before Shigaraki Tomura woke up from his three-month nap and was all “GOD I REALLY WANT ONE FOR ALL”, and Endeavor was all “ONE FOR ALL WHAT IS THAT”, and Izuku was all “HEY MISTER ENDEAVOR SIR, JUST SO YOU KNOW, SHIGARAKI IS AFTER ME”, and Aizawa was all “I don’t know what the fuck is going on here, but I too heard ‘One for All’ on the comm, and have also deduced that for some reason Shigaraki Tomura is targeting my student, because most of the time I’m the one who’s actually holding on to the two brain cells that all of the pro heroes collectively share.”

so now that all of that has gone down, I think the situation has changed enough where, moving forward, at the very least Endeavor and Aizawa will have to be let in on the secret. because if not, they’re probably going to start doing their own investigations into it and could wind up accidentally spilling the beans to EVERYONE. so at the very least they will (and should) know. and this also applies to anyone else who stumbles across this battle before it wraps up, and thus also starts putting the pieces together. I think this will be Shouto and Ochako and Iida, potentially, which I’ll be glad to see happen if that is the case. because even though I firmly believe not telling them earlier was the right call, that doesn’t mean I don’t want them to know about it. they’re his friends, and they’ve earned his trust and care about his wellbeing. I think and hope that they’ll understand why they weren’t told earlier, and I hope they don’t blame Izuku for it at all, because it absolutely is not his fault. he made a promise to All Might, and All Might, as I’ve stated, had very good reasons for keeping this on the DL.

and by the way, it also would not surprise me at all if in spite of all the precautions they’ve taken, the secret actually DOES get revealed to the world at large eventually. at which point I’m almost positive every single thing I mentioned above will come to pass, and Izuku will be in for one hell of a rough ride. the upside though is that at least he’ll have a bigger support network to help him get through it. and also he is a much stronger, smarter, and more capable person than he was even just a year ago, and he’s better equipped to handle it now than he might have been before. it’s much harder to argue “this child should not have been given OFA” when said child is now capable of using 45% power instead of just 5% and/or 100%-but-his-entire-body-gets-destroyed-in-the-process. also harder to argue when said child has since UNLOCKED THE POWER OF SIXQUIRKS which not even All Might managed to do, so suck on that!! of course, that in turn opens the door to suspicion about him being connected to AFO, which is a whole new set of problems. OFA really is just a humongous pain in the ass in a lot of ways lmao.

anyway, so I hope that answers your question! no I don’t think they should have told anyone earlier, but I do think they should come clean to a few people now, since they’ve basically been all but found out anyway. and I will be happy to have those people included in the OFA Scooby Squad moving forward. they’re going to have to get a bigger clubhouse though I guess.

Top 10 Favorite Deku Moments

so it’s Deku’s birthday today!! and since he is the best boy in the world and I love him, I am going to do one of those “top ten favorite...” lists for him just like I did for Kacchan back in April. these are going to be in chronological order, and the last two will be spoilers, so I’ll label them to make sure no one gets caught unawares.

happy birthday Deku. and this post turned out to be super long, like 4000 words, so I’m sorry, but you deserve it though.

1. “Most of the top heroes show signs of greatness even as children.”

okay so before I get started, let me just warn y’all upfront that a full four out of ten of these moments will involve Bakugou. I’ve said before that the relationship between Izuku and Katsuki is full stop my favorite part of the series, and this is absolutely still true, so yeah.

that being said, what makes this particular scene one of my favorites isn’t just that it’s an important moment between them (I’ll get into that relationship more two entries down); it also just so happens that this is the crucial moment which everything else in the series can ultimately be traced back to. this is the moment that inspires All Might to hand his power down to a quirkless middle-schooler, because despite being virtually powerless, Izuku proves that he has the heart and soul of a hero. he moves without thinking, without any kind of plan. it’s extraordinarily stupid, and incredibly selfless. it doesn’t matter to him that he has no way to actually fight this villain. it doesn’t matter that less than an hour ago, Bakugou was taunting him and burning his notebook. it doesn’t matter that he could easily be hurt or killed. the only thing that matters is that someone needs help. that’s it. it’s that simple. 

what makes Izuku a hero is that he is literally incapable of standing by and not taking action in moments like this. he acts on reflex to save others. his instinct in moments of danger and despair is to help, in any way he can. that’s the core of his character. and it shines through in this moment, and All Might sees it immediately, and it spurs him to take action, and from here on out everything changes.

2. “He didn’t utilize his full power. He just concentrated it into his fingertip...!”

fast-forward to the first day of superhero school, and our boy finds himself immediately in a tight spot again because his teacher is a stern and unsympathetic asshole whose way of showing consideration for his students is to mercy-expel anyone he deems not up to par. problem is, Izuku can’t actually use his new quirk without blowing himself up from the inside out, and he’s competing against what is probably the most gifted group of students U.A. has ever had. this is what is commonly referred to as “a pickle.” a jam. a quandary, if you will. if he breaks all his bones to pass the test, Aizawa will flunk him anyway. what’s a little green hero to do.

Izuku solves this problem in a typical Izuku fashion, meaning that his solution is somehow reckless, self-sacrificing, and frankly brilliant in its simplicity. rather than break all of his bones, Izuku sacrifices one (1) bone in order to launch a baseball into space, thus proving he can adapt his quirk to be useful without taking himself out and just adding to the problem. it’s worth noting that this is only his second-ever time using One for All, too. the fact that he has never had a quirk in his life up til this point and yet manages to control OFA to this degree on just his second go-around is damn impressive.

but what’s even more impressive is the way he simply outsmarts the test here. he calmly takes in the situation, thinks about the options at his disposal, and arrives at a logical solution that most people wouldn’t even have considered, because it involves intentionally breaking his own finger, which is an absurdly self-destructive thing to do just to pass a damn fitness test. but it works!! and it impresses the shit out of Aizawa too. and I just really love this moment because it’s such a perfect example of Deku both being smart and also just plain not giving a fuck and being the plussest ultra ever omfg.

3. “I can’t say much. But you should know this, at least...!”

so now we come to the second moment on this list involving Kacchan, and already there is a pattern emerging here: namely, that these moments of conflict and then reconciliation between the two of them inevitably end up being some of the most pivotal moments in the series. this particular scene comes on the heels of their battle in All Might’s first hero class, during which Deku soundly defeats Bakugou and makes it clear beyond all doubt that HE IS HERE!! and not going anywhere and Bakugou is just going to have to deal. Bakugou does a very poor job of dealing, however, and spends the rest of the afternoon super-quiet and caught up in his inferiority complex and convinced that Deku has been hiding this from him their whole childhood just to fuck with him.

most people, when put in a similar situation, would be all “fucking serves you right tbh” and just brush it right off. but Izuku doesn’t. or more accurately, I should say that he can’t. once again he acts on pure instinct when Kacchan’s welfare is involved, and this time it results in him blurting out his biggest secret -- a secret he was sworn to by All Might himself -- simply because he can’t stand to see Kacchan so miserable and he can’t bear the thought of him believing that Izuku really had been tricking him.

this is so extraordinary to me for a number of reasons. first and foremost, because Izuku’s altruism knows absolutely no bounds. he and Kacchan are on possibly the worst terms any two people could be on. he has absolutely no obligation to tell him this. but he does, anyway! just to make him feel better! second, there’s the fact that he doesn’t intend to do it, but it just comes blurting out. Izuku’s feelings toward Kacchan are complicated, as we know. and yet whatever the reason may be, Izuku demonstrates again and again that it’s a relationship he wants to hold onto, and he does his best to protect and preserve what little pieces of it he can. 

and lastly, this is now the second example of what will become a well-established theme in the series of Izuku going out of his way to save Katsuki. he does this again and again. he tries to help him after he falls from the log bridge. he rushes to save him from the sludge monster. he tells him about his quirk. he nearly fails their final exam because he goes back for him after All Might knocks him out. he runs into a forest full of villains to try and save him in spite of having two broken arms. he goes to Kamino with Kirishima and the others knowing full well it could get him expelled. and he fights him at night in Ground Beta even though they get into trouble for it later, because he sees how much pain Katsuki is in and he can’t turn his back on him. 

over and over again he puts himself in harm’s way for Katsuki’s sake, fully expecting no gratification to ever come from it, but doing it anyway. because he’s a hero, and because heroes don’t ask whether or not someone deserves to be saved. they just save them. this to me is the most incredible aspect of Izuku’s character. his heart is just that big. he is exceptionally, impossibly selfless and forgiving and good. and that’s just who he is. and Bakugou is lucky enough to be on the receiving end of that, whether he likes it or not, and ultimately over the course of these repeated encounters, he ends up changing for the better himself. and this moment in particular will, eventually, lead to the two of them actually reconciling for realsies when Bakugou finally figures it out and is subsequently inducted into the OFA Scooby Squad of Destiny. so yeah. this scene is so fucking important I can’t even begin. god I really went off on a tangent there. anyways.

4. “And Todoroki... isn’t you!”

so here’s another battle which highlights Izuku’s willingness to go to absurd and horrifying lengths to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. this entire fight is nothing short of ridiculous. Deku is ridiculous. let me break it down for you. Todoroki comes up to Deku before this fight and is all “hey I made a vow to never use my left side in battle because my dad only had me to use me as a tool to defeat All Might and he basically ruined my life.” in response, Deku says he’s aiming to become the strongest hero and so he’ll definitely win. he then proceeds to break his own fingers to blast Todoroki with repeated OFA attacks, all the while screaming at him that everyone is going all out and doing their best, and it’s arrogant and disrespectful of Todo to think he can beat their determination with only half of his power. 

Deku has absolutely zero regard for his own well-being in this fight -- by the end of the battle his bones are in splinters -- and his teachers observe that even if he does win, he won’t be in any kind of shape to move on to the next match. basically, he throws aside all of his own ambitions and even his own sense of self-preservation (if he even has one; it’s honestly debatable at this point you guys), all for the sole purpose of helping Todoroki realize that his power is his own and not his father’s, and to break free of the revenge-tinted tunnel vision keeping him from following his own dreams. the whole thing leaves Todoroki awestruck, and even though Deku eventually loses the fight, he gains a friend for life, and Todo fans everywhere are in his debt. 

real fucked up what he did to his fingers, though. but it just goes to show that nobody is perfect.

5. “I’m here to save you, Iida!”

I freaking love this moment you guys, and I can’t even explain why. except that who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned last-minute shounen save? Iida is seconds away from meeting his death at the hands of the world’s most annoyingly long-winded Ninjas Turtles cosplayer when Deku drops in out of nowhere and just socks the guy square in the jaw. it is satisfying as fuck. honestly that would have been awesome enough, but what makes it even better is that Horikoshi goes into some detail to explain that Deku didn’t just coincidentally happen to find Iida at the exact crucial moment, but actually used his Big Hero Brain to deduce Iida’s location through a series of shrewd observations and insightful hunches. and he turns out to be bang on the money, and that moment where Stain is reeling from the punch and Iida is looking up at him like, “Midoriya?!” and Deku sticks the landing in slow motion and says “Bingo!” in fucking English is just so fucking badass, guys. not to mention that this is also the debut of his Shoot Style on top of everything else. to sum up, this is one of the best entrances in the entire series, and just one of the coolest things Deku has ever done, IMO. you’re cool, Deku.

6. “You clocked me with all of your heart.”

yeah so you may at this point be sensing a pattern with some of these moments. yet again Deku does something stupid and risky because he sees Kacchan in trouble and all logic and reason immediately fly out the window. in this case it’s even more ridiculous, because Katsuki is not actually in any real danger at all, and by going back for him Izuku completely loses sight of what Katsuki got himself all beat up for in the first place. and yet he does it anyway! again! without thinking! like, he makes it maybe two steps away, and then he overhears Kacchan’s teary-eyed overdramatic and determined speech, and he immediately goes “oh fuck this I can’t do this” and turns back and grins maniacally at All Might before soundly punching the shit out of him. it is complete nonsense. there is no reason for it. Katsuki himself is furious when he finds out about it later. but does Deku care?? no, he does not care. and do I? no I do not because it’s the best and I love it.

7. “Let’s do our best, okay?”

this scene is feels city you guys. feels o’clock. zero dark feels. I almost put the “you’re next” scene here instead, but in the end this scene won out because (1) hug!! and (2) this is really the continuation of all of those emotions anyway, and it’s where the catharsis is at.

so let’s break this down since there’s a ton going on here. Deku is wrestling with the grief of knowing that All Might the hero, the Symbol of Peace, is gone forever. the pillar he and the rest of the world relied on to always be there isn’t there, any more. that sense of security is gone. and that’s a hard enough thing to come to grips with on its own, but put it together with the knowledge that he is the one who needs to step up now and fill those shoes, before he ever expected to, before he’s ready, and I can only begin to imagine how overwhelmed he must feel. and then on top of that!! All Might tells him he’s proud of him and relieved that he made it out of Kamino unharmed! and he tells him that he’s going to be there for him and that they’ll face the challenges up ahead together.

so for poor Deku, when you put that all together, we’ve got (a) that sense of loss, (b) fear and anxiety over the unknown difficulties to come, (c) various imposter syndrome feelings that he might not be good enough to handle it, (d) whatever misplaced guilt he may be dealing with for being one of the reasons All Might lost his power, however inevitable it might have been, and last but not least, (e) the deeply profound and humbling feeling of being loved and supported by the man he loves like a father, and knowing that no matter how scary things get, he won’t have to do this alone. so in spite of everything else, there’s that sense of relief and gratitude there too. he can do this. it will be okay. his dad is there.

all of that emotion, packed in one tearful hug. no wonder the kid is crying his eyes out. I would be too. in fact I did, and have no shame in doing so, and I would do it again. good job Horikoshi.

8. “This fight may very well have been a meaningless one... but...”

motherfucker did I not warn you there would be four different BakuDeku moments in this?? and that’s with me reining myself in too to be quite frank. that’s just how it is. it’s my list!! 

anyway, so I’m not sure whether or not an entire fight counts as a “moment”, but I’m putting it out there anyway because I’m incapable of narrowing this down any more than that. I could have an entire separate list of Top Ten Deku VS Kacchan Part 2 Moments and I’m sure I would still wind up leaving something out. I love all of it. the whole damn thing. it’s such a huge turning point for them both. they finally sort everything out. truth bombs being hurled left and right. it’s so good. agh.

but here are some of Deku’s highlights: (1) immediately shifting from trying to talk Kacchan down to fighting him outright with no hesitation once he realizes what the fight is actually about, (2) despite knowing how Kacchan feels, allowing himself to be just a bit selfish for once and get caught up in his own rival feels and trying to prove his worth as All Might’s successor, (3) complimenting Kacchan in the middle of the fight because of course he does, (4) openly admitting how much he admired Kacchan growing up and that he thought he was amazing, (5) getting so worked up that he loses control for a moment and jumps to 8% in one of the most badass moments of the whole series, (6) acknowledging to himself that even though he really shouldn’t, he kinda digs Kacchan’s rougher “I’LL KILL YOU, ASSHOLE” side anyway and emulates it without thinking when he forgets himself and that Kacchan is his image of victory, and lastly, (7) being a sneaky bastard and throwing a punch in with his shoot style knowing full well it will catch Kacchan off guard, which it fucking does.

Deku goes hog wild in this fight. he has a grand old time and even manages to achieve a new power-up, because he and Kacchan always do manage to bring out the best in each other, when they’re not bringing out the worst. you can’t watch this fight and fail to notice how insanely fired up Deku is compared to his usual fights. he is into it. he is ready and willing to throw down. he is here to kick ass and take names!! this is the impact Kacchan has on him. thirty fucking seconds into his therapy fight and Deku's maximum power output has increased by a whopping 60%. holy shit. mad lads.

it’s something not lost on All Might, who wraps things up by patiently explaining to the two of them how much they can learn from each other. and the whole thing concludes with the two of them becoming, as All Might puts it, “proper rivals.” that’s right, their rivalry is now officially approved and sanctioned by the motherfucking Symbol of Peace. well done, boys. these two are going to be absolutely terrifying when they grow up.

9. “...But you were there.”

okay so I have this indecisive kind of thing going on with whether or not I think All Might is actually going to die, and whether or not I want to see it happen. some weeks, like this particular week, I am on the side of BITCH DON’T YOU DARE because everything is goddamn sad enough as it is, Horikoshi, and I don’t need any more reasons to lie awake at night crying over fictional characters! but then there are other days when I think about how devastatingly, breathtakingly heartbreaking it would be, and for some reason I think, shit, yeah, he’s gotta do it. go ahead and hurt us good. make us feel things. leave no survivors. just fucking wreck our shit, go on ahead.

but then I read this scene again and think, there’s something so incredibly powerful about the fact that All Might started out the series believing he was going to die and being resigned to that fate and making preparations for it, only to be completely blindsided by the love he has for this boy and what that ends up doing to him. his love for Izuku gives him the strength to fight against fate. it gives him the resolve to look the grim reaper in the eye and say “to hell with this, I’m going to live.” it’s his reason to keep going. it’s his purpose. and god but that’s some powerful shit. characters saying “fuck you” to destiny? I am weak as hell for that, hell yes give me more. give me all of that.

and then Deku in this scene. pleading with All Might to keep living. “you have to live to see that moment, when I can tell the world, ‘I am here!’” promising him that no matter what happens, when the time comes, they’ll bend fate together. “without fail.” and just, holy fuck. when he says it, you really believe they can do it. because if anyone can figure out a way to conquer the inevitable, it’s this kid.

10. “Senpai... if I said that I would give you my quirk, would you...?”

last but not least, today just happens to be Mirio’s birthday as well, so it only seems fitting to end with this moment, which in the span of a single page neatly sums up why both of these kids are worthy beyond a doubt of being the next Symbol of Peace. Deku selflessly tries to offer Mirio his quirk, and Mirio instantly rejects him. doesn’t even know what’s going on, really, but just rejects the offer out of hand. “no thanks. then you would be the one subjected to this hardship.” and we can’t very well fucking have that, now can we. nope. not on Mirio’s watch. never mind that he just lost his quirk and his mentor within the span of the past twenty four hours. he wastes no time in coming to Deku’s aid in spite of that, assuring him that he did great and that everything will be just fine. so just smile already!!

but the fact that Deku was even willing to make the offer just once again goes to show how astonishingly good he is. he knows better than anyone what it’s like to be quirkless and powerless. he knows exactly what Mirio is going through. what’s more, Mirio is absolutely right that Deku did fucking amazing and totally saved the day and without him they would have all been screwed! but all Deku can see in this moment is how deserving Mirio is, and so he decides that in order to help him, he’s prepared to make what for him is the ultimate sacrifice. the power that All Might gave him. his dream of becoming the greatest hero. everything he’s worked for up to this point. he’s prepared to throw all of that away if Mirio just says the word. there truly isn’t a selfish bone in this kid’s body.

but Mirio says no. because Mirio is also selfless. in conclusion we had just better hope the two of them never wind up reaching a door together at the same time, because the ensuing battle of who holds it open for whom could singlehandedly bring this series to a dead halt. the ultimate stalemate. they are too good and we don’t deserve them.

so anyways, that’s it! happy birthday kid. and here’s one more for the road.
