Me using humor to disguise the fact that I am telling them how to do it correctly because customers can get so defensive if I point out they don’t know how to use their card’s new tap feature, and I kinda have to say something because they will get frustrated and start jousting at the reader with their card, and we just got new card-readers that actually work and I am not about to let someone break my brand-new easy-to-use card-reader just because they don’t want to admit that they have no idea how it works and need to be helped at least once to figure it out: “It’s more of a sit that a tap, haha.”
#my autism gets overly attached to tools. especially ones that are overlooked or damaged or need maitenece.#I maybe accidentally named one of our broken shopping carts Hamburger (cos hes smashed but he’s still okay-ish) and it’s#still referred to as Hamburger and when it goes missing people say ‘who fucking took hamburger again.’#one time I found hamburger way in the very back of the warehouse (not with the Too Broken To Use carts; it was just left in the back with#some stuff in it someone forgot to put up) so on my lunch break I went and put up the stuff and then wheeled ol Hamburger all the#way to the back room where I kept it. I did use it! there’s always one or two shopping carts back there for moving product around. I just#had a peculiar one that I befriended and perhaps there was a time when my mental capacity to not quit was indeed held together only by Hamb#Hamburger’s rusty and squashed frame.#ANYWAYS. I love my card readers 🥺 I love the broken ones and the new ones.#the new ones have a very fatal flaw: older cards are a little thicker so they need a tiiiiny extra nudge to fully insert. and oh my god.#I have to walk on eggshells to explain that. because if i don’t explain they will decide to shove the card like they think it’s a carnival#game of ‘how hard can you push this? are you strong enough to win the stuffed cat for your girlfriend?’#so far it works if I just…very…slowly…hover my hand over to their card…and very lightly nudge it. and then I make SURE to say.#‘I appreciate you being gentle with it#it’s new and actually works really well compared to our old ones and I don’t want someone to break it pushing too hard; so thank you.’#and I’m so sympathetic to the card reader 😭 like DAMN. I couldn’t read your card either if you slapped it against my eyeball for half a sec#like it needs a moment to scan. like an eyeball. just set it in range and it will beep when it’s finished. it’ll take a full second or maybe#even two or three. but it’s going to take even longer if you start whacking your card on it and then give up and put the chip in and then it#has to show the errror message and then reset and then try to scan the chip and hopefully you found some patience for that otherwise you#took your card out already and are now staring at me like I’m an irresponsible Card Reader Handlef#for not properly training my equipment to work.#sorrrrrry for rambling!!!#sorenhoots#wait this is my post. not sorries.

You entered the gates of school grounds walking with your head up as you said good morning to those you had passed. You quickly attempted to get to your first class of the day, wanting to meet up with your best friend. As you approached the doors, you immediately spotted Sunwoo who was on the other side of the hallway, talking to one of his friends. He looked up and waved, signaling you to go to him.
You walked over, trying to get a look of the man who was standing in front of him with his back faced towards you. It wasn’t until you were about five feet from them when you realized it was Jaehyun. You stood next to them, silently acknowledging Jaehyun before turning your attention to Sunwoo.
“Did you study for the test today?” He scoffed a bit, the hidden smirk trying not to rise up to his face. “Hey, you know Jaehyun, right? My teammate? The one I introduced you to a couple weeks ago?” He ignored your question as he wiggled his eyebrows a bit, teasing you as Jaehyun eyed you, waiting for you to properly acknowledge him.
“Yes, I am familiar with his name that roams around these halls, along with the rest of the… crew, I guess you could say.”
Jaehyun smirked and slightly bowed, “Well, what can I say? I’m pretty irresistible.” Sunwoo slightly shoved the older male, laughing as his eyes returned to you.
“Yes, I did study. Give me a second, I’ll meet you in the classroom, yeah?” You nodded, before turning and walking away, but hesitated and turned your head, lifting up your hand to show Sunwoo that you have your eye on him. The mischievous smirk on his lips said otherwise.
//
You walked out of the classroom with Sunwoo close to your tail, calling for your name in a teasing tone. You ignored him as you both entered the cafeteria, this time, hearing him call your name louder to overtake the noise in the hall. You can practically hear the smirk in his voice. “What is it Sunwoo?” You didn’t even bother to look at him, someone else catching your eye on the other side of the room.
You went to your usual table where you and Sunwoo would hang out for both snack and lunch. You sat down on the side that made sure you would be able to see Jaehyun before your friend cut off your view. “Uhm, hello? I’m the real star here, look at me!” You rolled your eyes and retrieved a snack from your bag.
“What is it Sunwoo?” You popped a chip into your mouth, chewing as you watched him glare at you. You smiled innocently, knowing what he was going to say, but hoped that he wouldn’t say it. “You and Jaehyun have been talking ever since I introduced you both. It’s so painful to watch, just go out with him already.” He rubbed his face in frustration and then ran his hand through his hair.
You laughed, thinking about how much of a drama queen he is, “Sunwoo, if Jaehyun gave me a sign that he may have some feelings for me, you think I wouldn’t ask him out already? What kind of person do you take me for?” You narrowed your eyes playfully as his eyes widened in shock, “Oh so you admit to having feelings for him?” You shrugged, eating your chips peacefully before taking a glance behind him to see where Jaehyun went, only to see that he’s staring right at you.
You quickly looked back to Sunwoo, “Let’s just say, I haven’t caved in yet.” He fell back on the chair dramatically, his eyes rolling with a pout on his face. “You play hard to get,” he shook his head, making a tsk sound. He began to speak again, but you couldn’t focus as the person behind him stood up and began to walk in your direction. You panicked as he came closer, your hands tapping the table to grab Sunwoo’s attention, but he ignored you, “I just wish you would cave in and my two best friends could—”
“Sunwoo! Sunwoo! Shhh!” It was too late, he heard it.
“They should cave into what Sunwoo?” Jaehyun sat next to him, his arm wrapping around the younger who got startled. Jaehyun looked at you the whole time, the soft smile on his lips never faltering. Sunwoo watched the interaction between the two of you, a disgusted look on his face. “Well then, I’m gonna go uh, to the bathroom. Don’t want the teacher to yell at me for going during class you know what I mean?” He laughed awkwardly as he removed Jaehyun’s arm from his shoulder and stood up. As he was walking away, he turned to look into your pleading eyes, smirking as he mouthed the words ‘just cave in.’
You scowled, setting an imaginary reminder to yell at Sunwoo later. You turned your attention to Jaehyun who said your name, “You know, we’ve been talking for quite a while now yet we’ve never… hung out.” You purse your lips, feeling your throat go dry as you only nodded in response. “Do you see where I’m going with this?” You smiled awkwardly, but decided that maybe you should try and break the confident facade he held.
You smirked, bringing your arm up to rest your elbow on the table as you leaned on your head on your hand for support, “I don’t know Jaehyun. Why don’t you tell me?” You saw his eyes break character for a bit before he cleared his throat, shifting in his seat as he racked his brain for an answer.
“Ah ha, you think you can try and switch the roles here?” He leaned back on the chair, “Well too bad sweetheart, I’m not falling for it.” He looked around the cafeteria with a smug and egotistic look. You rolled your eyes and put the last chip into your mouth before crumpling the bag. “Jaehyun, there’s no role switch here. And last I remember, you’re the one that wants to hang out with me.” You stood up and grabbed your bag right as the bell rang, “Oh and by the way, I know your ego tells you you are, but you’re not that very intimidating. Cute, maybe, but not intimidating.” Your eyes scanned his face, seeing his ears tint a bit as you smirked.
He stood up as well, feeling agitated as he doesn’t have that much time to speak with you, “What will it take for me to change your mind?” You pondered, thinking of all the options you had and the power you held at the moment. “I don’t know. Do 20 cartwheels at any moment during practice today?” Of all the things, you chose that.
He snapped his fingers, shooting them at you as he walked backwards, “Come to practice today, and I’ll do it.” Your mouth fell agape, but quickly closed as you thought he would never do such a thing, especially in front of his team.
Sunwoo came up beside you, watching as his best friend quickly walked out of the cafeteria, “I’m betting my eyeballs that you will cave in.”
You laugh, “And if I don’t?”
“I give you my eyeballs.”
//
Jaehyun jogs up to the bleachers where you were standing. He takes off his helmet and hops up to reach your level with the support of the fence. “Well? I did what you told me, didn’t I?” You laughed softly and shook your head at him, not answering, but instead glancing at Sunwoo who only gave you a thumbs up to continue.
“Jaehyun, I am honestly surprised,” He raised his eyebrows, confusion written on his face as he tilted his head, “because that was, by far, the stupidest thing you’ve ever done.”
His head dropped, laughing in embarrassment as it now played a factor to how he acts around you. He cleared his throat in an attempt to control his emotions as he looked back at you, your eyes scanning the team behind him. “In my defense, you were the one who said if I do like 20 cartwheels at any given moment during practice, it would change your mind.”
Your eyes returned to his as you laughed out loud, disbelief and shock in your voice, but a smile on your lips, “You went with it though, I didn’t say you have to do it.”
He groaned, laughing as he now realized he could have avoided the embarrassment. He looked at you as you smiled softly at him, “Is practice over?” He looked back at his team who were sitting at the bench, talking and drinking water.
“Yeah, they’re just resting before they go to the locker room.” You nodded your head in understanding, watching Sunwoo motion for you to just give in to Jaehyun.
“I think you should go change.”
“Why? I have time, the locker room doesn’t close for another good two hours or so.”
“No, I meant you should go change so we can go and grab some ice cream?” You didn’t mean for it to be a question, you just weren’t sure if he wanted or even liked ice cream. The worry immediately disappeared the second a smile rose on his lips.
He jumped down, backing up slowly as he held up his hand, his pointer finger up, “Give me 10 minutes!” He grabbed his duffel bag, “I’ll be like the flash! Wait here!” He sprinted to the boy’s locker room, laughing and cheering as he punched the air out of happiness.
You giggled at how cute he was, the butterflies in your stomach competing against the back flips. Taking a deep breath, you watched as Sunwoo approached the bleachers and hopped up, jumping over the fence and leaned against it, staring intently at you. “Well?” You looked back at him, the smile on your face never leaving. That was the only answer he needed, “You so caved in.”
“I know I did.”
“Hand your eyeballs over right now.”

Allmight: Symbol of peace
Yn POV
^quirk: Agility, Super human agility and senses.
   *beep* beep* beep*
I rolled out of bed and stood up stretching as much as possible before dropping to the floor in a sitting position. I spent  a while meditating before I got up to make my coffee. I turned the radio and coffee maker on as I began to go about getting ready for my day.
I teach pre-K students and they are the little joys of my life. My entire life revolves around teaching them, they mean everything to me. I've been teaching pre-K for almost 6 years now and it's truly what makes me happy. I packed up everything I needed for class today and scanned myself over. I wore my black leggings with my knitted brown sweater and low tops. I grabbed my bags and headed toward the door. I locked up and made my way to work.
The crisp fall air hit my face as I opened the door to leave out. "Woah—nope." I closed the door and ran back inside to grab my coat. I put it on along with my scarf before actually starting my journey. I began my walk as I listed to the crunchy fall leaves as I stepped on them. The Autumn season always made me happy even as a child. There has always been something about she cool crisp atmosphere that caught my interest.
As I reached the school I walked into class and began to set up for my class. I cleaned the desk and plugged in my water heater. The classroom was already toasty as I began to place the kids mugs on their desk. I took out my laptop and began to play music at a low volume. I checked my watch as I began to make my specialty hot chocolate for my class. I finished just in time as my children began to filter into the classroom.
"Good morning Ms. YN!" I turned my head to the door to see the smiling beautiful faces of my class begin to rush in. A huge smile spread across my face as they lined up one by one in front of me. "Good morning my lovely students!" I hugged the man each one by one before they headed to assigned seats. They sat smiling wide, staring at their cups. We made them as an arts and crafts project and they absolutely love them.
With my entire class in attendance the morning bell rang. I took another sip of my hot chocolate before standing up and addressing my class. "Okay kids, today we are going to have a very special visitor." They began to whisper among themselves. "Okay, okay, quiet down. Would anyone like to take a gue—." I knock on the door cut me short. All headed turned to the closed door as the children were literally sitting on the edge of their seat. I couldn't make them wait any longer, they would just be cruel. "Come in." I said as I eyeballed the expressions on the kids faces. The door creaked opened slowly as a tall figures ducked into the door way.
   Almight pov
"Come in." I heard a delicate voice through the door. I slowly pushed the door open and crouched down through the door way stepping into the classroom.  Immediately I saw the entire class full of children jump from their seats as little feet scurried toward me. I closed my eyes and braced for impact. When I noticed I wasn't covered in pre schoolers I opened my eyes to see the students all back in their seats perfectly and the teacher now in the back of the classroom. "Now class, how do we greet our guest?" Her soft voice rang through the classroom before the students responded.
"Good morning Almight! Welcome to our classroom!" Their small voice spoke in unison as they were barely able to stay in their seats. I was at a loss for words. I have never seen children so young and so well behaved. "Good morning children! And good morning to you Ms...?" I trailed off as I looked over to the teacher awaiting her name. "Ms. Yn" A smile played upon her lips as she responded. Her smile was bright and welcoming. "Good morning Ms.Yn." I said completing my sentence.
"It smells amazing in here, may I ask what you all are drinking?"
"Ooh! Ooh!" A student raised his hand drawing my attention toward him. "Yes young man?" I asked as I called on him.
"Well Ms. makes us specialty hot chocolate sometimes to keep us nice and toasty."
   "It smells delicious."
" Actually Almight ive made you some as well. No one in the class is left out ever. Here you go." She said as she handed me a hand painted mug with my head on it as a cartoon drawing. I felt my face flush pink as I thanked her. I took the tiny mug from her hands as we made brief eye contact. "How about we all take our first morning sip together?" She asked.
"That sounds like a great idea." I held the cup to my lips as the class did the same. I took a sip and felt a sense of comfort. This was the best hot chocolate I've ever had. It was sweet and the perfect temperature but there was something about this hot chocolate that didn't taste like normal hot chocolate. Some more. It taste amazing. My eyes dropped down into the mug trying to figure out what was giving off this amazing flavor.
"T-this hot chocolate...... IS PLUS ULTRA!"
Yn POV
I felt my face heat up as I took another sip of my hot chocolate. I love when people enjoy my
hot chocolate. The class giggled as did I seeing the hot coco mustache on Almight's face. "Almight, you've got a hot coco mustache." He let out a loud hearty laugh before speaking. "Well it just shows how delicious your hot chocolate is." I sat my mug down and handed the symbol of peace a napkin. He wiped his face as I leaned against my desk, addressing my class.
"Today the symbol of peace will be helping us our with class so let's be on our best behavior. Who knows, maybe if we behave he'll come back another time." The class went crazy with excitement at the thought of almight being in their class not once but twice.
We started the day out with some songs and and math before moving into reading. Next it was time for gym. Without me having to ask Almight got the students to line up single file and follow him to the gym. He strutted down the hall heroically as the class copied his walk. It was amazing I just had to take a picture. When we got to the gym the kids did their warm up stretches before they had free play. Almight played with the kids as I planned out the lesson plan for the rest of the week. The children stacked were in a cheerleading pyramid as Almight pretended to be their coach. Something felt off as I looked up over toward the children. I jumped up as I saw all the children about to topple over. I quickly dashed over to the children and began to catch them placing them down one by one in a safe spot. I wiped the sweat off my my forehead as I was now back in my original spot. I looked up to see Almight looking over at my with his mouth slightly gaped open. I gave him a soft smile as I went back to lesson planning.
After gym it was time for lunch. I took the children to the cafeteria and returned back to the classroom to see Almight sitting at my desk with two wrapped boxes. He placed his phone down before speaking.
"Ms. Yn, have lunch with me? It's the least I can do since you made me some of your delicious hot chocolate this morning." I tried to dial back my smile as I blushed. "I'd love to but I'm not sure that's such a good idea." I looked away for a moment trying to avoid his gaze.
"Oh?" He asked as his tone dropped slightly."Well how about you tell me about it. It'll just be two people having a conversation." I hesitated before nodding my head in agreement and walking over. He stood and pulled out my desk chair. "No it's fine, I'll sit here." I sat atop my desk with my legs crossed. Almight began to unwrap one of the boxes as he spoke.
   "I'm listening."
"Well what would the kids think? Ya know? I usually get my lunch and go eat with them."
"I'm sure they wouldn't mind you having lunch without them today." He said as he unwrapped the box completely as opened it up. Amazing smells radiated from the bento box as I saw the marvelous food.
"So I saw in the gym earlier. Can you tell me a bit about your quirk?" He asked as he leaned on the desk slightly, giving me his full attention.
"Sure, so my quirks name is agility. I'm basically very agile with increased senses. So what you saw earlier in the gym was just me doing normal people things at an accelerated speed. But it wasn't an easy quirk to improve upon. It took countless hours of gymnastics and speed training and LOTS of combat training—." I felt something press against my leg slightly. As I looked down I saw Almight pushing the unwrapped box off food toward me. He flashed his heroic smile at me.
"You're not going to give up, are you?" He didn't respond, he only continued to smile at me. I hopped up from the desk and walked behind it. I went into my bag that was next to Almight and pulled out the bento box I had packed for the day. I held in front of me before speaking. "I'll eat, but only if you eat what I brought. But this is NOT lunch, this is just two people talking and eating."
"Okay, let's trade." I handed him the bento box in my hands and sat back down. I watched as he opened the bento box and immediately took a bite. The atmosphere around seemed to have shifted as he placed his hand over his heart.
"This is......the best cooking I've ever had." My entire face turned a bright red as I immediately looked everywhere else in the room.
"Please, you're too kind. It's just something I threw together."
"Oh please Ms.Yn, you're being too modest. How do you do it? Family recipes?"
My face went flush even more as I looked down at the floor. "Actually I just put a little love into everything I make."
"Well it's absolutely amazing." I looked back up at him and he was blushing just as hard as I was with the same cheesy smile. We continued to talk as we enjoyed each others food. His food tasted just as amazing as it smelled. I felt like I was in heaven. Before long it was time to start class again and the students began to return.
Almight POV
My phone began to ring as the students filed into the the classroom.
"One moment, I have to take this." I stepped out of the classroom and answered the call, it was Nezu calling.
"Hello?"
"Ah! Almight! So nice to hear from you. Midnight has gathered all the faculty in my office and she told us that there has been someone to peak your interest. You must come back and tell us all about it over tea."
"Well actually sir I—."
"See you soon." I let out a deep sight as he hung up the phone before I had time to respond. Note to self: don't call Midnight—even when no one else answers the phone.
I walked back into the classroom and walked over to Ms.Yn. She looked up at me and I almost wasn't able to tell her soft beautiful face.
"Duty calls." She nodded as she understood what I meant.
"Well can I get a picture of you with my class?"
"Of course."
"Duty calls young heros! How about we all get a photo before I leave."
The class all ran over to the back of the classroom as Ms.Yn pulled out her phone. The children crowded around me as she raised the phone.
"Now what kind of picture would this be if you're not in it?" I placed my arm around her torso and pulled her into my side.
"Okay let me set up the camera." She said as she bolted to her desk and propped up her phone. She put the timer on and ran back over. I pulled her back into my side as I balanced children on my shoulders and one atop my head.
"Everyone say PLUS ULTRA!" She wrapped her hands around me the best she could, I looked down to her blushing and smiling face as she posed for the picture. I couldn't help but think to my self how beautiful this woman is.
"PLUS ULTRA!!!"
*click*
She jumped over the children and over to her desk. I grabbed the bento box she had given me and walked over to her. I looked down at the picture she was smiling so widely at and noticed the pink shade that dusted me face. Hopefully no one else will notice.
"Here you are Ms. Yn" she turned on the heels of her feet to face me. "Keep it, you can return it to me when we have lunch again."
My face was now beet red as I tried to contain my excitement. "I-I'll uhh, I'll come see you after school. Does tomorrow work?"
"Works for me. Now go be a hero."
"Don't worry about a thing, I'll take care of everything. Farewell class!" I said as I began my way out of the classroom.
   "GOODBYE ALMIGHT!!"
*BUMP*
I turned my attention back to where I was walking noticing I hit my head on the low door frame. Giggles came from behind me as I nervously chuckled and crouched out of the door. I was so excited I could barely contain myself. I dashed out of the school building and leaped through the air.
"PLUS ULTRA!"

“Y/N! Mikoto! Come down here please!”
Hearing your mom calling your name, you set your pencil down and headed into the hall, nearly colliding with your younger brother. You descended the stairs, standing in the doorway of the kitchen.
Your mom glanced over her shoulder before turning back to dinner. “Mom just called, she needs help moving a mirror to the living room. Someone is coming to look at it tomorrow, and she can’t move it herself.”
“Sure, mom~” The two of you chorused before heading to the entryway to slip your shoes on.
“Do you think she means that really creepy mirror in the guest room?” Mikoto whispered as he slipped on his sneakers, not wanting her to overhear him. “I bet it’s haunted.”
“There are no such things as spirits, Miko, we’ve been over this.” you rolled your eyes, slipping on your boots before pushing the front door open. The chilly October air greeted you, nipping at your face and hands.
“But if spirits did exist, they would totally exist in that mirror.” He leaned forward. “You don’t find it creepy?”
“Well… I guess it is kind of creepy,” you mused, tapping your chin with your index finger.
Your grandmother lived only four houses down from yours, so you arrived rather quickly and knocked on the door. She pushed it open and ushered you both inside, offering some hot cocoa to warm you both up. The smell of chocolate chip cookies filled her house.
“I’ve just put the cookies in the oven. They should be done by the time you move the mirror,” she smiled, putting her arms around both of you. “Thank you so much for the help, my dears.” With a gentle peck to your forehead and then his, she retreated over to the oven.
“Let’s get this over with,” you said softly, not wanting the older woman to overhear.
He nodded, following you into the guest room at the back of the house. You flicked the light on, feeling a drop of sweat roll down your cheek as you glanced at the tall mirror leaning against the wall, a faded white sheet thrown over it. You tugged the sheet off, letting it pool to the wooden floor.
The wooden frame was faded and chipped in multiple places. The glass was scratched and had the remnants of old stickers stuck to it. It looked like a simple old mirror, but looking at it gave you the chills.
“How should we…?”
You stood beside it. “Get on the other end and carefully push it over. It’ll be easier to carry if we turn it on its side.”
Mikoto nodded, his hands carefully holding onto the side of the mirror as he pushed it over. You held the other side, not letting it hit the ground. He bent down, putting his hands under it as he lifted.
“It’s light,” he commented.
You nodded. “Yes, but be careful, okay?”
“Okay~”
You slowly walked backward, holding on tight to the mirror as your brother walked forward, a look of concentration on his face. You noticed the rug, careful not to trip over it.
“Miko, watch out for the – ”
Mikoto squeaked in surprise as his foot caught the rug and he stumbled, his upper body pushing the mirror forward. It slid across your hand and you felt a sharp pain, making you lose your grip. In seconds, the mirror crashed to the ground, the glass shattering across the floor.
The two of you exchanged a look, wincing.
Your grandma came rushing in as fast as her old legs would carry her, her eyes scanning the scene. “Oh dear, are the two of you okay?” she noticed you holding your hand, a look of pain on your face. She shuffled over, careful of the glass.
“I’m sorry!” Mikoto’s voice cracked as his eyes filled with tears. “It was my fault!”
“It wasn’t,” you insisted, giving him a smile. “I got a splinter and lost my grip…”
“It looks quite deep. Come into the kitchen and let’s get it out, dear,” she held your wrist and the three of you stepped around the glass, entering the kitchen. After shuffling around for the tweezers, she carefully pulled the splinter from your palm. The area was red and sore, but you knew it would heal quickly. She placed a spotted bandaid over the wound and smiled.
“I’m really sorry, grandma,” you told her, grabbing the broom and dustpan from the storage closet.
“It’s okay,” she smiled. “Let me clean it up, I don’t want you getting hurt anymore.”
“No, I’ve got it. I’ll be careful, I promise!” you kissed her cheek before heading into the hall.
Mikoto stood nearby, watching you with a frown. “Isn’t it bad luck to break mirrors?”
“Seven years,” you answered without much thought, regretting it instantly as a worried look flashed across his face. “But don’t you worry, it’s just superstition.” You placed your hand on his head, ruffling his hair. “With this touch, I take all of your bad luck away!”
“You’re so lame, Y/N~” he pouted, the corners of his lips twitching upward.
With a smile, you got to work, careful to check under the furniture to make sure you got all of the glass.
───── ⋆⋅🎃⋅⋆ ─────
The Autumn festival was arriving in Tokyo, bringing all manner of people to the city. Starting on the twenty-fifth, the festival ran until the thirty-first of October. It offered rides – such as the Ferris wheel and bumper cars -, food stalls – mos of which offered scary-looking eyeball shaped items and drinks made to look like blood -, and various game stalls – like the dime pitch or the shooting game. The festival opened at four-thirty in the afternoon and remained open until well after midnight.
As someone that loved the month of October and Halloween with every fiber of your being, you fully intended to visit the festival every single day that it was in town, but life had other plans for you.
On the day the festival arrived, you had rushed out of your classroom, feeling excited, but that left you open to the science teacher that was passing by as you ran from the room. She stopped you, asking if you would help her carry the new science books from the office to the science lab. You were raised not to dismiss someone in need, so you reluctantly agreed to help. When you got there, in your haste to leave, you spilled a substance in a glass jar on her desk. Naturally, you had to stay and help her clean it up. It was pretty late by the time you finished, and you had to get home to help your mom with dinner.
The next day, a storm rolled in so the festival was closed until it passed, which it did at five the next morning.
On the third day, Mikoto was throwing up and had to stay home from school. Since both of your parents had to work, you stayed home from school, as well, and took care of him well into the night.
On the fourth day, in your haste to get to the festival, you tripped on a piece of sidewalk that was sticking out of the ground, spraining your ankle. You couldn’t put much pressure on it for two days.
On the sixth day, all Hallow’s eve, you were determined the make it to the festival, but the food you had eaten that morning had other plans. You spent most of the day in the bathroom with bad diarrhea.
Were you cursed? Was this some divine punishment for sins you committed in a previous life? Or was the superstition that breaking a mirror really did bring about bad luck true?
You were beginning to wonder, but the game wasn’t over yet. You had one more day.
October 31st
You kept glancing at the clock on the wall, but time seemed to be passing at a snail’s pace. The teacher droned on and on about one thing or another, but you didn’t register anything he said. Your mind was racing with thoughts about what had happened over the past week and what might yet happen.
No matter what, you would get to the festival. Nothing was going to stop you.
Tick, tock.
“Now, I’d like to take a moment to – ”
Tick, tock.
“And don’t forget to – ”
Tick, tock.
“I expect you all to – ”
Tick, tock.
The bell finally rang, echoing through the school like an angry banshee.
You jumped up, clutching your pre-packed bag to your chest. You were out of the room before the bell finished ringing. That’s when your challenge began.
Your plan was to avoid all of the other students and teachers – if they didn’t see you, they couldn’t ask you for help – while being careful of your footing so you didn’t trip again. The night before, you had made a nutritious meal packed full of vitamins for your brother, so you were confident that he wouldn’t get sick. As for yourself, you had skipped both breakfast and lunch to avoid any disagreements they might have with your stomach.
You were ready for anything!
You slowly peeked around the corner, eyes scanning the hallway. Although you had been the first one to leave the classroom, your sneaking around to avoid everyone made you one of the last people to leave the school. There were a few stragglers left behind.
The hallway was clear, so you ran as fast as you could, crouching behind a large round trashcan. The shoe lockers were just around the corner. All you had to do was pass that level and then face the boss – getting past the school gate.
Two girls were standing by the lockers, chatting about their plans to take their siblings trick-or-treating. Your eye twitched. ‘Just go home already!’
Several minutes passed before they finally left, their voices fading.
You peeked around the corner to make sure no one else was there. ‘Okay, Y/N, time to go for the record!’ you jumped around the corner, yanking the locker open and switching your shoes at lightning speed. You could hear voices approaching and your head snapped to the courtyard. There were still students floating around the gate and the voices behind you were getting closer.
You were being boxed in.
‘I have to make a run for it, there’s no other option!’ your feet pushed off the ground just as two boys rounded the corner. Cold air whipped around your body as you ran, your mind focusing on your feet so you didn’t trip over air like you had before.
The gate was right in front of you and steadily getting closer. Just a little bit farther and you’d be free.
A hand grabbed the back of your shirt, tugging you backward. With a squeak, your foot slipped out from underneath you as you fell back against a strong chest, arms wrapping around your body to steady you. You glanced over your shoulder, meeting the violet eyes of Rikkaidai’s self-proclaimed tensai, Marui Bunta.
He grinned at you as if he hadn’t just given you a big fat ‘game over’. “What’s the rush, Y/N-chan~?”
Jackal stood next to him, sending him a pointed look. “You shouldn’t grab people like that! Are you okay, Y/N? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”
You scowled at Marui, pulling yourself from his arms before addressing Jackal. “I’m okay, but I really need to get going. Please excuse me.”
Marui’s threw his arm over your shoulder, preventing you from moving. “Do you have a date we don’t know about, Y/N-chan?” he wiggled his eyebrows with a grin, blowing a bubble with his mint gum.
You could feel your window of opportunity closing and you kept glancing at the gate like a trapped animal ready to dash. “I’m going to the festival with -”
“We’re going too!” Marui declared. “Let’s go together!”
“What? No, I -”
But he wasn’t listening as he dragged you out of the gate with Jackal following close behind, trying to convince him to let you go. You frowned, chewing on your bottom lip. So far, every single failed attempt to get to the festival involved you going there alone to meet someone. Was this the secret? Did you just have to visit the festival with someone? You glanced at the two as they bantered back and forth.
‘It’s always easy to get lost in the crowd at festivals. You see it happen all the time in shoujou anime. When we get there, I’ll just sneak away and go see Ryoma!’ you thought with a renewed excitement.
───── ⋆⋅🎃⋅⋆ ─────
The three of you made it to the festival without incident. You were so happy to be standing at the entrance that you wanted to cry, letting your eyes take in the scene of the happy festival-goers. There was a problem, though.
Marui’s arm was wrapped around your own and he refused to let you get away.
You tried to pull your arm free, making like you were heading for one of the game stalls, but his grip tightened as he said. “I don’t want you to get lost!”
You even tried to bathroom excuse, but he insisted on escorting you there.
Having two younger brothers made Marui quite a protective person, and he regarded you like family.
‘What do I do now?’ you frowned. You were happy to have made it to the festival and you did love both Marui and Jackal, but you wanted to experience the festival at your own pace, not Marui’s. You also wanted to find Ryoma, who you had desperately been trying to see over the past week.
Your phone buzzed. It was a new message from Ryoma.
✉ ‘Did you finally made it to the festival?’
You bit your lip, typing a quick reply. ‘I did but… I’m being dragged around by Marui…’
✉ ‘Che’
Your frown deepened. You could feel his annoyance through that one word and you honestly felt guilty, knowing he was feeling that way because of you. The two of you went to different schools in different prefectures, so you didn’t get to see the short boy that you had fallen head over heels for very often. Both of you had been expecting to spend the festival together, but day after day, something happened that prevented you from going.
As you passed by the haunted house, you suddenly had a brilliant idea. You tugged on Marui’s arm, pointing at the attraction with a grin. “Let’s go in there!”
His body visibly stiffened, his face going pale as a scream sounded from the entrance. “A-Are you sure you want to go in th-there?”
You suppressed a smirk, tilting your head to the side. “Yeah! You can’t come to the Autumn festival without checking out the haunted house.”
Jackal caught onto your plan. “Sounds like fun, let’s go!” He pushed his friend toward the entrance with some difficulty since Marui’s heels were firmly digging into the ground.
Another scream ripped through the air, followed by the cackle of a witch. You could see Marui’s soul leaving his body as his head fell back. Jackal gave you a nod and a kind smile, slipping his arm around Marui’s own. You gave him a thankful smile, tugging your arm free before you turned tail and ran in the opposite direction. Once you were a safe distance away from the haunted house, your body started to relax, your eyes sweeping over the scenery around you.
“Y/N.”
You turned around, eyes meeting those cat-like eyes belonging to Ryoma. Without hesitation, you threw yourself at him, arms wrapping around his neck so you could bring him close to you. “I missed you so much, Ryoma.”
He scowled, fighting back the blush that was creeping across his cheeks. “Where’s Marui?”
“I managed to ditch him at the haunted house with some help from Jackal,” you grinned, letting him pull back. You knew he wasn’t fond of affectionate displays.
He started to walk toward the back of the festival and you slipped your hand in his, lacing your fingers together. The throngs of people began to thin out and the loud sounds faded as he brought you farther away from the festival. You were slightly disappointed, knowing that it was the last day to experience everything it had to offer, but feeling Ryoma’s warm hand in yours made it worth it.
He found a nice patch of grass and laid down, folding his arms behind his head. You settled down beside him, your cheek resting against your palm as your eyes scanned his face – his cat-like eyes always full of mischief, his long lashes, and his soft lips. He was gorgeous in your eyes. You reached forward, gently brushing the hair from his eyes.
“You should transfer to Seigaku.”
“It’s a bit late for that, don’t you think?” you chuckled. “Maybe when I graduate I’ll try and pass the entrance exam for Seishun High. It’ll be hell trying to get away from the tennis team, though.”
He scowled at the mention of them, feeling jealousy tugging at his heart. “I don’t like how close they are to you.”
“Aww, are you jealous~?” you teased, poking his warm cheek. He scoffed, knocking your hand away. “There’s nothing to worry about. Those guys are like family to me.”
Ryoma hummed, closing his eyes, but he didn’t comment.
You glanced up at the black, velvety sky, lit up by dozens of twinkling stars. “Hey, Ryoma?”
“Hm?”
“Do you believe in bad luck?”
He raised a brow, looking at you curiously. You told him about the mirror you and your brother had broken and how you were starting to think that it was behind the string of bad events that had kept you two apart over the past week. “Isn’t a mirror seven years of bad luck?”
“Actually, I took Mikoto’s bad luck, too…”
“Fourteen years of bad luck.”
“Y-Yeah, but that’s just superstition… right?” you both exchanged a look. “I’m gonna end up being that crazy old person with a string of garlic around their neck and a horseshoe above every door…”
Ryoma laughed at the mental image that provided. “Don’t forget the rabbit’s feet and four-leaf clovers.” Your pointed look made him smirk. “Even if you become some crazy superstitious person with fourteen years of bad luck coming for you, I’ll still love you, Y/N.”
Your lips tugged up on their own as you leaned over him, tugging on the hem of his shirt. “You better~”
“I promise,” he whispered, closing the distance between you.
Just before your lips met, a familiar scream broke through the night air, followed closely by a crying fuschia-haired boy who was shrieking your name as if his life depended on it. It made you jump up, thinking something was wrong, but Marui tripped, slamming his body into yours. You both hit the ground.
“Y/N! Th-There are gh-ghosts here! This place is haunted! We need to leave!” Marui cried, clinging to you like a child as tears streamed down his face. Jackal came running up a moment later, sweatdropping at the scene.
You sent Ryoma an apologetic smile, but he was too busy staring at Marui in annoyance. ‘Definitely bad luck…’

N7 Month, 2019: Day 13 - Medic
A little diversion.
++
It was chaos on the Citadel. The Crucible wave had devastated the station in a way that reminded Jonathan of the Sovereign attack three years ago. He’d been first on the scene, there, too, as part of the Citadel Civilian First Responders. It was the only comparison he had in his mind for the devastation around him, only it was a poor comparison. When the Reapers took the station—towed it back to Earth—thousands of residents had taken their chances and fled. Obviously, not everyone could, and some who could didn’t. The Citadel was in ruins, who knew how many had died or were trapped?
He should be down in the wards helping people—there weren’t nearly enough CFRs to handle the kind of chaos the Citadel was experiencing. Who knew how many CFRs had been killed in the initial blast, anyway. Instead, he had been tagged by a Spectre unit—a Spectre unit!—to search the Citadel core. They’d just appeared and requisitioned his whole team, and even with the world on its head, you didn’t say ‘no’ to a requisition from the Spectres. Any other day, he’d be elated: this would be something to tell his grandkids about. Real spectres.
But the Citadel core? Nobody lived there, that wasn’t where the need was greatest.
When they reached the core, Jonathan gasped at what he saw. Part of the Crucible had fused itself with the Citadel tower, the groan and heave of the two structures shook the ground as they grinded together in space. The room was enormous, a cathedral of broken technology and crumpled hulls, and Jonathan couldn’t tell where the Citadel ended and the Crucible began.
“Need to be quick,” said one of the Spectres, a salarian. “Compartment not secure. Could lose atmosphere at any moment.” Technically, CFR protocol would prohibit them from going into such a precarious situation, but Jonathan didn’t have the feeling the salarian spectre cared too much for that particular piece of protocol. He fumbled to put on his rebreather mask, then he was running into the expansive wreck of a compartment.
They began to work methodically through the debris, omni-tools glowing, searching meter by meter for any sign of life. Every time the room shuddered and the sound of twisting metal rang out through the thin atmosphere, his partner shot him a worried look. Still they searched. Finally, there came a shout over the comms:
“Medic! Medic to zone 314!”
“I can’t believe there was actually someone up here…” Jonathan muttered while he pulled up the zoning map they had made of the room to survey the rubble. The appropriate zone was on the other end of the complex, and Jonathan jogged past the other teams hopelessly scanning incredibly tall piles of rubble.
“Medic! Over here.” It was the salarian spectre again, still brandishing his rifle in one arm while his omni-tool glowed around the other. Two other CFRs were there as well, hurriedly pawing at the debris. A human arm protruded from a break in the rubble, limp and badly burned.
“Careful!” Jonathan ran up and began to pull aside the debris as well. His omni-tool scans were all over the place, barely able to tell if the person buried under the rubble was alive or not. When the arm was fully exposed, he knelt down and grasped at the wrist to feel for a pulse. “Nothing.” He sighed, sitting back on his heels.
“Let’s get him out!” Said the spectre. He had stowed his rifle and his omni-tool had been switched to a cutting laser. Taking his example, the other worked began sawing at the beams that trapped the body in. When they finally exposed the body, Jonathan shook his head. The man was clearly a soldier, but his armor had been annihilated in the explosion, and his body lay limply amidst the wreckage. Just as the other workers were about to pick up the body, the spectre held up a hand. “You two. Go, now. Help other teams.” He turned to Jonathan, great dark eyes staring down at him. “See to him.”
Jonathan turned his scanner back on, running it up the body, seeing the crushed bones and the dislocated joints and the litany of internal bleeding the omni-tool reported to him.
“There’s brain activity. And a heartbeat. Faint.”
“Can you stabilize him?”
“I don’t know,” he set his bag down and began pulling out its contents in a rush. “I need some help getting him out of here. There’s not a lot I can do for him crumpled up like this on the floor.” He opened his comms. “We should call those guys back, they can--“
“No.” The spectre stepped in front of him. “I will help you move the body.”
“We should wait for some help.” The man was big and Jonathan was not a strong man.
“No. Get his legs.” The salarian stopped as he stooped to get his arms under the soldier’s arms. “Any risk of further damage to move?”
Jonathan shrugged.
“Well, yes, but he honestly can’t get much worse. But I can’t do anything for him like that.” The spectre nodded and the two awkwardly managed to drag the man out onto a clear patch of the deck. Jonathan stooped down again, filing through the organized contents of his bag.
“Must move quickly.”
“I got it, just—“ then Jonathan looked at the charred face. “Oh my god, this is… Commander Shepard!”
“Must move quickly.”
“Sorry. I just… shit. Okay. Umm. I can’t do much with his armor on—“
The spectre pushed him out of the way and brandished his omni-tool. He began immediately cutting into the melted chest plate of Shepard’s armor. Jonathan was amazed he had eyeballed the beam tight enough to cut through the armor and not straight into Shepard’s chest.
“Tell me what to do.”
“I need access to his heart. And a defib, just in case. Here and here. He needs oxygen—“ The spectre removed his rebreather and gingerly placed it over Shepard’s mouth without interrupting his cutting. A moment later, he removed the chest plate as one large piece. Jonathan knelt and tore through the ripped undersuit to expose Shepard’s chest.
“This is Col Vedirus,” said the salarian into his comms. “Medical evac to zone 234 ASAP. Find me a hospital that still has power close to my position and tell them to expect a critical patient.” He put his comms down and squatted across from Jonathan. “By the time evac arrived, must have Shepard’s face covered.”
“Okay okay, just let me work! I’m losing him—“
The rest of the CFR teams were already tasked with clearing enough debris to allow for an ambulance to land inside the complex. It took Jonathan right until the moment the ambulance arrived to stabilize Shepard, but he was still in critical shape. There was only so much stims and medi-gel could do.The EMTs emerged from the back of the ambulance, looking as frazzled to be there as Jonathan had been. They lifted Shepard’s body onto a cot and hustled him into the back of the ambulance, began hooking him up to life-support.
“We’re going with,” the spectre pronounced, and the stunned EMT moved to the side to allow for the lanky salarian to step into the back of the ambulance. “You. You’re coming.” He pointed at Jonathan.
“But… but…”
“Must move quickly.”
Jonathan gave one last look back at his fellow, baffled looking CFRs, then jumped into the back of the ambulance. Something to tell his grandkids about, indeed.

Chapter 10- What I’ve done, PT. 1
Tumblr media
In this farewell There's no blood, there's no alibi 'Cause I've drawn regret From the truth of a thousand lies
I am picking up a distress signal approximately 5 lightyears away. It would take us 30 minutes to get there should we decide to help.
Jimin patched the communications through to let them listen. It was from a Federation ship that had run aground and was attacked by some Pirates. The problem was because the area was so close to a cluster of pirates that were in the area, that if they were detected--they would have another fight on their hands. Nyala ran to her station since she had been in the cargo hold again, doing her check-up for the day on the crate. Upon reaching her station, she quickly did a long-range scan to find out more about the situation. As much as she didn’t like to stop and help, she couldn’t quite ignore the cry for help.
They were about to calculate their last jump to get to their destination, the planet Izanami and they couldn’t afford to get caught or even engage in battle. Not without trying to find an engineer, or at least get the rest of the supplies that they would need for a deep space run. Fate would only know where that path would be taking them and they had to prepare for the worst. Nyala and Jimin locked eyes from across the bridge, their thoughts starting to sound similar as they started to think the same thing. They both knew what could happen if they just left, or they could be detected after all. It was a gamble at this point and she played to win.
“Kibeth, plot a course. Maybe what we’re looking for will be on this path.” Everyone else started to protest her decision, especially Yoongi. She held a hand up to give her a moment to speak before continuing. “Look, I know that we’re showing that they’re the Federation but we might be able to use this to our advantage. We could use the information that they have and I don’t plan to have us fly blind when we’re dealing with the Armada.”
Her words rang true with everyone, no matter who didn’t like it. Yoongi’s face soured as he sat there in his chair, even more so when Vairuit cheered her decision. Jin and Jungkook gave each other uneasy looks before making up their minds. Kibeth had already altered their course at Nyala’s words, with a straight shot towards the distress call. And since they were a Vibrissa class ship, they would be able to help more than a standard ship.
“Nyala. I hope that you know what you’re doing because I don’t know if the Federation would show us any more mercy if we’re caught than the Pirates would.” Jin sighed, setting his jaw as he stared at the screen. She smiled at him, realizing what he was saying.
“At least, they won’t execute us on sight.”
On that, they all had to agree on that point. The Federation would at least take them as prisoners before declaring them fit for death for their outlaw crimes. There was more of a chance to escape with them than the Pirates. Still, no matter the obstacles that were in their way at the moment--there was something else that Nyala was sensing since they had been passing by the situation. It was something similar to the currents that she could sense between all of them and if it was someone that could help there amid all of that mess, then she would help them out as well.
Soon the time passed for them as they got closer to their target, tensions mounting as they dropped out of subspace. The scene before them was fairly bad, chunks of the ship was missing and debris was everywhere. Whichever sect of the Guild attacked them, they struck quickly and without any type of mercy whatsoever. And as of then, they did not care to get any closer and investigate with the Federation sitting right in front of them. They were there to help and get out quick before they could get their engines back to chase them.
“This is the SC Antares, we heard your distress call and have come offer assistance,” Jimin called out for the warship to hear. A garbled sound was heard instead, prompting him to try and pinpoint what was causing the disruption. They all held their breaths, hoping that they would call it off but when Jimin got it to work--they almost groaned.
We hear you Antares. We just need help stabilizing life support and reinforcing our hull to transport these prisoners safely.
“They must not want us poking around too much,” Vairuit commented, eyeballing the mess. “Even more so if they were transporting prisoners. They don’t want to run the risk of one of them escaping but it looks like they had no choice.”
“They most likely have facial recognition programs on board, so if we show our faces then we’ll run the risk of being handcuffed…” Yoongi mumbled but Kibeth heard the comment and offered a solution to that problem.
I believe I can disrupt those systems from here. I require a direct connection, however.
Yoongi stood up and started to talk with Kibeth on what he would need to do. Some of the cargo on board he had taken with him with the full intent of helping them get out of situations. He was pretty sure that there was something in there that he could use and the only person that could safely get in without too much trouble would be Jimin. Yoongi’s face was much too recognizable and would be pinged immediately on the scanners while the rest of them were being hunted by both sides. They had to play it carefully if they were to help, even able to get the information that they needed while Kibeth was connected to their systems.
Nyala would stay on board with the ship with Jin while the others would help. The pair would start the repairs since the arms on the ship could be extended as it was a Vibrissa class, the extenders that could be used for a variety of things. Including outer hull repairs, using what they had around them to help put together a suitable outer shell or weld together exposed parts.
Jimin smiled his way onto the ship, the man not really being recognizable as he didn’t venture out as much Yoongi did. He talked with the Captain, keeping things short and sweet until he was able to put the transceiver into place. Once attached to one of the consoles, Kibeth sprang into action and quickly taking down their systems. The encryption was a walk and a breeze for the AI, surprising Jin as he watched. He knew that the AI was pretty high tech but he truly didn’t realize how advanced it was compared to other things. Yoongi was the only one that wore a device that altered his face a bit so that way people wouldn’t recognize him too easily, the price of fame.
However, there was something off about the entire scene and Yoongi could sense it. Some of the criminals deserved to be there but there were also others in there that had no business being in there. Some caught in the crossfire and some were just being desperate in life. As he was passing a cell, someone’s thoughts caught his curiosity and as he peered into his broken cell--he saw a man sitting there. The man could have escaped and done some real damage to the ship but instead, he was content to sit there. Among all the chaos and the repairs, Yoongi crouched down and stared at him. He looked up, sensing that someone was there and his sharp eyes bored into his. It was animosity that he was staring back at him with and Yoongi began to feel a bit unsettled.
“Why are you here? Can’t you let me live my life out in prison alone?”
The more Yoongi looked at the man, he began to see what it was that Nyala was talking about. The words that Vairuit and Jimin threw at him had his head ringing. It burned him up inside that their words rang so true and they were even coming to haunt him in that perilous situation. Or was it that he still wasn’t over what they said to him? The bothersome feeling was there like a connection that got under his skin or someone that he really didn’t like was talking to him and he had no choice but to listen. He grunted at his raw words, the feeling of them almost like hot water on his skin.
“I’m not the one you need to be worried about. It’s the pigs on the ship and the ones they have locked up.”
“Aren’t you one that’s locked up as well?”
The man gave the barest hint of a grin and turned around, showing his back to Yoongi. His back showed that he was done talking but it also showed that there were abrasions and bleeding there that he didn’t care about at all. He’d been hurt in the attack but chose not to say anything. Yoongi turned away, eyeballing the cell one last time before moving on to what he was really there for. He made his way to the cargo hold, seeing how it was one of the places that took the brunt of the attack. Placing some spacial transmitters on some of the cargo, they were transported straight to the Antares’ own hold. After doing so, he went straight back to the cell and found that the guy was looking at him again.
“Can’t get enough, can you? I’m not leaving so just go away and do your repairs. This ship is going to make it with the minimal amount so you can be on your way.”
Yoongi paused at his words, realizing that he knew a little bit about that type of stuff. He gave the guy one last look before taking off again, straight to Nyala to confirm what it was he had been sensing from the guy. The repairs were going to take just a little while longer so he had the time to spare since his job was already done. It was time to see if he really was going crazy or just letting the others get to him.

Stories of Insubordination
rehearsed-mania
Title: Stories of Insubordination (AO3) Ship: Bismuth & Pearl (Steven Universe) Rating: T (for now) Summary: Between a Pearl who belongs to no one and a Bismuth who makes weapons for rebels, a deep — and subversive — bond can be forged. This is a collection of snippets following their shared resistance during the Rebellion.
>> Chapter 1 under the cut <<
I. The Strike
Bismuth would later interpret she’d always been a rebel on her own account and no one else’s. It had been as if she only ever needed the slightest spark to rise: that was Rose Quartz. Rose’s discourse but not her presence, mind you, for they’d only stand face to face many, many, many years after the first revolutionary ideas had begun to spread like a virus among Gems.
Nothing more life-threatening than infusing simple workers with dangerous ideas about their own place in the overall shit that was the Diamond Empire. Imperceptible mistakes were made and entire buildings would fall off within months of use by the Uppercrust. This Bismuth — facet 6f9f, cut 8tr — would secretly bask in the destructions; she just couldn’t avoid the satisfaction of seeing work routine be slowly dismantled after they’d all finally heard:  You can be what you want, you can do what you desire .
The whispers, the doubts, the dreams, a budding lack of purpose. She — facet 6f9f, cut 8tr — and her comrades were immersed in this new perspective which they couldn’t yet name.
Until the first Bismuths shattered themselves, one after the other. These creatures couldn’t fathom the reality of still serving their superiors and knowing with certainty they were no more than servants. At least, that was Bismuth facet 6f9f, cut 8tr’s hypothesis: their previous ignorance had been bliss, without being pressured to take part in a future, closer than ever riot. In the end, all it took was the absence of one Agate supervisor and, in mere minutes, repetitive, shrieking noises were heard in each corner of the forge.
“My comrades in tools,” this Bismuth declared on the very same day, holding in her arms the illegal weapons used by her colleagues to commit their first and last crime in this planet “we’ve reached our limit. Nothing and no one has the power to hold us back from our new purpose! We have to fight back for our friends! Fuck the elite scum!”
There was no united reaction from the other Gems: some shouted and whistled, some remained silent in fear. Come what may, facet 6f9f, cut 8tr’s leadership decisively turned their collective paths around. Before long, they’d already poofed the Agate right when she returned to find them in total havoc, threw her gem in the pool of lava, broke all machines and crossed their arms.
A Bismuth paralysation under Pink Diamond’s nose; now, that was quite the situation. Thankfully, Her Clarity was too overzealous with her own little experiments to even care. News were running rampant in the world thanks to one pilgrim Bismuth. The remaining peons stood their ground and waited. With no Agate to report them to Homeworld superiors and barely any production needed for a half-assed colony such as Earth, the impacts would be minimal, except for one consequence, the grandest of all.
Bismuth — facet 6f9f, cut 8tr — knew exactly what she wanted: to meet Rose Quartz. The detractor had been organizing clandestine reunions with other Quartz soldiers, but so far not with the masses of working Gems. Would she step down a notch and listen to the rough, resigned constructors? She did, and thousands of years later this tired Gem could still remember a surge of energy coming directly from her stone, zoning out her projected body in waves of defiance as the entrance alarm rang.
“It’s her, I can feel it!” a comrade exclaimed, glued to the cave’s wall.  Open it, open it ! she was cheered on. Without hesitation, the guard connected her Gem’s power to the metal surface. It was unsealed in a chain of multiple doors opening horizontally and vertically, up and down, left and right, until the last barrier was peeled off and, at last!, there she was: Rose Quartz. She towered above all the rest, chubby and graceful in a dress more creamy than white - her purpose wasn’t to pay homage to the big stellar boss, after all.
The Bismuth almost tumbled on her own apron, for she had never witnessed a presence as… as… the uncalled urge to bow down overtook her. Self-restrain, woman! Shouldn’t they be equals? But what else was there to expect, when every subversive thought this poor Bismuth had ever entertained was authorised and legitimated by the very Gem right before her? They should be equals.
The incendiary walked in strides towards them. However, another sight quickly diverted facet 6f9f, cut 8tr’s attention.
Almost at Rose’s side, following her in minute little steps, was a Pearl. A Pearl, of all beings! Who could she be? No, it wasn’t possible… stars,  the renegade ! Tiny, thin, weak, as if she would break at any moment, cracking like a china damaged beyond repair. Her face, though! — her hard-set eyes, her tousled hair, her unshaking posture. This Pearl could melt even a Bismuth into lava.
“Pleasure to meet you, fellow Bismuths,” Rose Quartz greeted them as she first stepped into the hot, sweaty forge, a place not at all delicate such as herself. “You’ve done an extraordinary job here. I must confess I’ve never seen anything like this before. Have you ever heard of another strike in this galaxy, Pearl?”
“It certainly has been a long time, in a faraway planet. I have heard that the Bismuth kindergarten policies have been modified after the incident.”
She spoke in the monotonous tone Pearls were known for. Her capacity to not move a single inch was quite unnerving, probably a remaining trait of slavery. From her cherished corner near the wall, Bismuth could not only watch the Pearl closely, but notice the small yet concrete distance that kept her apart from Rose.
“Oh, really? What a delight — the strike, I mean, not Homeworld’s tyranny.”
Facet 6f9f, cut 8tr wasn’t able to stop looking at this Pearl. She hadn’t known creatures from a class as her own were able to transcend it in some way. How could a Pearl hold herself with such poise? What an absurd proposition it was that one of her kind acted shamelessly arrogant towards pretty much any other real Gem in existence. She didn’t greet the crowd, let alone  smile  or talk. She clearly hadn’t bothered looking enticing for anyone, maybe except for her master — after all, was Rose her master or not?
Her big, round eyeballs were scanning the laborers, all too blinded by Rose Quartz’s presence to even notice. When their eyes met, Pearl slided her analytical gaze over Bismuth’s form. This solid builder suddenly felt devoid of any coverup — before she knew it, the words had spilled from her mouth.
“Do you belong to somebody?” After an offbeat instance of silence, Bismuth’s feet began to fidget.
The Pearl blinked. When she finally spoke, her voice was precise to a fault. “No one owns me.”
“Wow. So you’re really your own Gem, eh?” She laughed to herself, tucking her rainbow locks over the headband. The pride contained in this Pearl’s words — so far, no more than a few — was too much even for a working class radical to comprehend. There was still so much to learn.
Another harsh pause. “Yes, I am. Anything more?” It sounded kind of pre-programmed, like an official message repeated over and over again; perhaps, she  did  have to reiterate her stance every time to disbelieving Gems.
Bismuth rubbed her neck in muted embarassment. “Excuse me, I’m just a good ol’ Bismuth who can’t stop asking questions. Y’know, haven’t always been allowed to.”
The Pearl didn’t respond. Instead, she turned her attention back to the other Bismuths who’d been trying to reach Rose with no success, thanks to the mates who’d bundled up around the great leader, pouring onto her all the demands of long, exhausting labor cycles.
“You should all form a circle so we can listen to what you have to say,” she commanded as loud as possible. Damn, by the likes of it she’d blindly bet this Pearl could scratch a Bismuth. This was the whole point of the rebellion, wasn’t it, that no Gem outpowered another based on oppressive ranks which they had never decided by themselves?
The Gems turned back to stare at her, but didn’t budge at all. There lied an uncertainty in the air, that didn’t dissipate before Rose eventually spoke up.
“Pearl is right, oh my, how can we talk this way? Please, let’s sit down.” Only then did the Bismuths change position, following her eagerly. It was revolting how Gems were built to take orders from superiors, but it would take time to rewire themselves. A few thousand years down the road, maybe?
Facet 6f9f, cut 8tr sat on the floor with the rest of her turf. She exchanged looks with her folks, who nodded in encouragement; it was her right and duty to speak. “Oh, we sure have a bunch of stories to tell you two.” She stretched her arms way over her head. “What do you want to hear about? Our forge conditions, the work accidents, our dependence on a Zircon to stay alive in this society, how we’re all sick and tired of working ‘til death while Emeralds sit on us like we’re chairs?”
“By work accidents, I believe you mean the latest temple disasters,” the Pearl said as calculated as before while sitting almost next to her.
“Yeah, but not only those. I’ve lost count of how many companions have slipped up and cracked their stones with these stardamned machines. And not all of them were fixed.” She sighed in pain, hands closed in fists, remembering her long gone friends 8fg, 6xl, 5dj.
“My condolences, fellow Bismuth. It must be a never-ending grief,” Rose whispered sweetly, as if she were capable of experiencing the same ache. Somehow, though,  never-ending grief  still wasn’t enough to translate all the...
“We need more information,” the Pearl insisted. “I couldn’t grasp what you’ve mentioned about the Zircons. Be as detailed as you can.” There was no  please  at the end, it didn’t go unnoticed.
This Bismuth wasn’t quite in the mood to be thoroughly interviewed, but the opportunity to share so many horrors she and her own lived on a daily basis was far more important than any setback. She went on and on, a few corrections and complements offered by other comrades in tools along the way. The Pearl watched her with full attention.
“We’ve reached a breaking point in this galaxy, it’s true. Change is everything we need.” It was Rose’s final say in the matter. “You Bismuths are dedicated and skilled constructors, but your talent has been wasted so far. Join us and you’ll have the power to choose: what does each one of you want to build?”
Such a simple yet unforeseen question. This simple Gem had never considered choice as a possibility, no matter how much anger the repetitive activities raised within her. She found herself gasping for air she didn’t need, the pressure of a question, when had the Uppercrust ever asked her anything?, stars, it hit her hard, more than any rock ever could. One entire existence could be reinvented in a few seconds, after all.
She raised her hand. No other friend motioned to speak.
“I’ll make whatever you need for the Rebellion,” she spat out. She was angry, some  fucking anger it was, and it fed her to the core. “You name it and I’ll do it.”
The Pearl looked at her hard. “Do you have any knowledge about crafting weapons?”

Chapter 17 Excerpt
As they headed forward, the ground began to rumble. They paused, and it stopped. Tally’s PED began to buzz. They moved forward a bit more, into the wide-open space, and the ground rumbled again, ceasing once more as they stopped. Tally tapped her visor, muttered something, and everyone’s screens lit up with tracking. They were surrounded. “Oh, Shootfire. It’s a trap.” “Let’s get out of…” Chic’s words fell away as she, Tally, and Lark fell straight down, the ground beneath them caving away into a vast underground space that seemed impossibly large. The asphalt and concrete chunks bounced them about as they tumbled, then vanished just before the three gals fell into a gilded cage without a door in it. As she landed and the wind was knocked out of her, Chic watched the parking lot chunks reform themselves above them, and watched the cage top come down over the tiny prison, held by a vast and enormous hand with fingers longer than she was tall, skinny and spider like. She followed the arm down to a tall, unimaginably skinny man who was laughing, his face a stretched-out parody of a face, leering at them. “Well, well, well, what have we have here! Little pretties all together. Darkies all, no less!” There was laughter and a strange skittering noise all about them. Tally shook the bars of the cage. Lark began to sparkle and hum with power. “Oh, my, look at how cute they are!” The voice was deafening, painful, and he brought the cage around, swinging it back and forth as he did so. It was filthy with sarcasm. In a moment the cage settled, and he peered with an eyeball twice the size of Tally’s head through the bars. “I swear, if any of these people have scissors for hands, I quit.” The voice was a whisper, but Chic caught it from behind and outside the cage. “These must be the ones that sent old Blame back!” The bizarre titan said, licking his lips. “How perfect that they should come to me, now.” “Come to us, my Master.” “Yes, us. Toys for the tots, you understand.” “I do believe we are a team, after all, unless you think less of us.” The girls spun as the new voices joined the chorus, a dull, lifeless light filling the cavernous space. It was as if someone had created a theatre with a thousand box seats, all of them filled with minions who had once been some form of genius, but were well beyond the point of formless and shapeless blobs now. They had a semblance of limbs, varied features that might have been noses or eyes or ears, not quite right, as if they were still bubbling into place or shape or form, molten and fluid. But among them were four others. Agents, without a doubt. None of them having the same old feel as the monstrosity holding them, but all of them exuding a greater sense of power. “Oh shoot. We are so fluttered. But, no scissors.” Chic said softly. “You are not Rebels. You are not even Partiers. What sort of pathetic vermin has Genesis sent to me for fun?” Tally made a face, but was silent. Lark scowled and was stressing, her power causing the bars of the cage to spark. Chic looked around and realized it was going to have to be her. “I’m pretty sure that vermin would apply more to your audience here.” “Vermin, thing, applies to whatever I say it does.” Chic arched an eyebrow and tapped her staff on the cage’s base. Her scythe shot out. “And just who the heck are you supposed to be? Veidt’s dead and Ledger did it better.” She could have sworn he grew, right then, even as he laughed, his head back, full throated, his whole body into it, causing the cage to bounce and jiggle and toss around its occupants. “Smooth, Columbia.” Chic shrugged. “It was worth a shot, Diaspora.” His face came back to the cage. “Ah, how wonderful to meet someone who gives power when they mean to take it. So perfect! So precious! I, pretty pet, am Insolence.” He bowed low, still holding them up. “At your disservice. Allow me to introduce my lieutenants. Harassment, whose work you are all most assuredly family with. Dogpile, who recently joined but has risen through the ranks quite admirably. Tricky Dick, with whom I am certain that you, little goldilocks, are quite familiar. And Geldwin, whom I think shall have first dibs on you this evening.” “Flutter.” Tally said, quite distinctly and with great feeling. “Indeed. You should get some Visine for that red eye problem of yours. And maybe look at losing a few pounds. Say twenty, right off the top.” Tally raised the first two fingers of her right hand at him. Made a face and looked at her hand. “Oh, you have got to be kidding me.” Chic spat. “Seriously? Really?” The laughter around them was not helping matters much. “I need a diversion.” Lark whispered. Tally nodded. “There are way too many eyes here, leaning over balconies and what not.” The titan laughed. “Oh, I think there are just enough. Perhaps after we are done with you, they would like to sample the fine delicacies.” The crowd went wild. The gals shuddered. “Be a shame if something blew them off the edges.” Chic said loudly. “Yes, wouldn’t it?” Dom responded. The voice outside the cage caused Insolence to jerk his head up and scan around, his buddies suddenly on high alert as well. “We seem to have a gnat buzzing around. Dogpile!” “On it!” The one called Dogpile was extremely heavy set, with a scruffy almost beard and a balding pate covered with lanky reddish brown hair that was too long. He stepped forward, and he seemed to expand in one part of his body, the whole thing elongating, stretching, slowly becoming as if something was erupting from him, then became obviously a part of him separating, and with a popping sound there was another of him, but both were slimmer, more trim. Then they both did it, almost in unison, and they laughed, an eerie echoing sound to hear from both of them. In a moment, there were four, trimmer by more, and two of them rushed into the space in the center, the damnable smoke curling around them and forming into something, some shape, something familiar. A breeze had sprung up in the area, tweaking the hair of the titan and his crew and the scattered few minions who had managed to evolve or morph or something that far. In a moment, as the first of Dogpile began his subdivision, it was a strong, gusty wind, and a chuckle started to echo eerily through the space. Insolence’s eyes roamed the cavern, squinting, and he snarled. “No!” he hurled the cage aside and reached into the empty space. The cage soared, and Lark spoke words that crackled in the air like lightning, harsh and sharp, and she was surrounded by the ribbons of her power, the queerly lighted lettering flaring bright on them as the others held on tight to the bars while she somehow stayed perfectly balanced on the floor of the cage, even as it tilted sideways. It began its descent, tenths of seconds passing, and halfway to the floor it exploded, and Tally was moving before she even hit the floor, striking off it with her staff and summoning her battle axe, long ponytail snapping with whip cracks. Lark was on another spell already, her light ball flying high, the ribbons swirling about her. Chic’s visor showed Dom clearly, something she was certain the others could not see. She was in outline, and it was rather stunning to see her idly float away from the massive hand of Insolence that kept trying to find her, blindly groping the air. Then the shots rang out. It was a deafening roar of automatic firepower, and when she looked they were Uzis or some sort of submachine gun, with enormous clips that had round chambers at the bottom which trailed thick smoke. They were reloading them as fast as they fired. Chic began her own spell immediately, the bars of light swirling about her, the peculiar text seeming to get more easy to read each time. She summoned a shield between the ground and the shooters, and set her own in front of with a movement of her arm. Dom laughed even as the first bullets grazed her, her clothing puffing away and then tiny clouds restoring it, but was not pleased, as now she had to move more quickly, for the blood trails revealed where she was. She dropped the invisibility and Insolence’s eyes locked on her and he grinned madly, both hands coming in for the kill now. His left hand twitched hard, then fell to the ground. He turned and faced his attacker, a small black woman in a gown with a wicked looking glaive in her hands and a bonnet in black with gold trim resting on her purple curls. She shrugged at him. He missed the gold and pink haired girl between them, did not see the whirlwind that was beginning to form in front of her, or the smile that curled the edges of her lips. He charged, his first step shaking the entire place, his second falling squarely within the whirlwind, and he howled in agony. Then began to shrink. Tally screamed a guttural war cry as she came down from an enormous leap and cleaved one Dogpile in two, spinning and letting her battle axe glide in one hand into another as she punched down on one half and kicked the second half. As she’d expected, the two partials began to quiver, to become two separate wholes, and she cackled as she brought the bloody axe around into another great arc that clove another pair as if they were butter. Something grabbed her around the waist, and she slammed the butt of her axe into the ground, sparking electricity all along her body, her attacker screaming as the shock shredded him into wrack and murk. Domino’s wind finally began to lift the minions out of the boxes, and she hurled them into the walls, their soft forms making crunching noises as they struck balustrades and balcony fronts. Lark’s chanting brought forth hundreds of small, red, bright eyes snakes and she began to rise on a column of water that was pouring up from beneath her when the first body pounded into her. “So, have you always been this glamourous, or is it one of those temporary things you girls do to trick us?” Her attacker asked as they crumpled into a pile together. “How dare y…” his fist struck her face like a lead weight, driving her head into the hard floor, which was definitely not wood, no matter what it looked like. Lark’s violet eyes turned up at him. “Well, since you ask,” He punched her again. “Rather easily, I’m afraid. You black girls just,” Again he struck. “Can’t take a hit.” Another blow. Lark tasted blood, and she was pretty sure her cheek was shattered. He had her pinned with his legs, one of her arms underneath her, the other held by his free hand. “Aww, are you gonna cry now? Like the stupid little …” He flew into the air and smashed into the wall with enough force to become embedded, a good dozen feet off the floor. He let out a groan. Lark tried to open her eyes, only got one. She was surrounded by a glowing light, and sweat poured off Chic, staining her sleeves and the front of her dress and matting the curls. In front of her was the still slowly shrinking Insolence, trapped in the whirlwind that was shredding his leg, trying desperately to free it. Her shield arm was cast back towards Lark, staff straight as an arrow, brilliantly lit. She looked up, and saw Domino whirling like a dervish, her movements sending the tiny squirmy nasty things into the walls, creating a work that would make Jackson Pollock proud. Across the way, Tally was surrounded by two dozen Dogpiles. There were two missing. She looked around. Her snakes were surrounding one of them, his arms moving so fast it seemed he had a dozen of them, pulling them off as fast as they could climb up and on him, their teeth flinging bits of gore and smoke everywhere. The throbbing in her face was receding fast, and she cast about for the missing one, struggling to remember his name. He had been the last. He was the ugliest, the nastiest looking, pale white with the blonde hair and the blue eyes and the… … wings. “Oceania!” She croaked, her throat raw. The flying woman in green and copper with coral trim paused at the wrong moment as the Aryan launched from a balcony and slammed into her, knocking her from the sky and following her down, catching her and somersaulting about to hurl her by her cape and one pigtail straight down, his vast metal wings spreading out behind him, red and emblazoned with a symbol that was instantly recognizable. Lark’s pain was nearly gone, and she gently touched her face and found it tolerable. “Columbia, I’m good!” The blonde didn’t even acknowledge her, just snapped her staff back in front of her and held her shield rigid. She was glowing brightly, too brightly, and Lark saw the rivulets of blood that were running down the back of her legs, crimson stains joining the sweaty ones from bullets that were flying fast. One of the dogpiles pointed his gun down at the still struggling form of Oceania, who was trying to get up. A thud beside her made her jump, and she looked to see her attacker starting to rise, shaking his head. “This one!” Insolence bellowed. “Get this one!” His roars were drowning out even the gunfire, and Lark’s ears were ringing too much from the sounds in the confined space to even hear what her attacker was muttering, but he seemed to find it amusing. She pointed her staff and gave him a blast. He was shredded almost instantly, beginning to reform as she looked away and saw the winged Nazi son of a boobie zero in on Columbia. “By the Wand of Freedom, bring the rockets’ red glare!” She tapped her staff four times, and then hoisted an enormous gun multiple times her size. She sighted, got tone. Five missiles launched. She blinked, looked at the giant weapon. “Holy shoot! Cool!” There's plenty more, and you can read the first 10 Chapters for free! Hive's new home monitoring camera isn't bound to its base
Hive is a relatively well-known smart home brand in the UK. It all started with a connected thermostat released back in 2013, endorsed by nationwide utility provider British Gas. Not long after that seal of approval, British Gas acquired the company behind the thermostat, and now the Hive range includes motion sensors, lightbulbs, smart plugs and a water leak detector. Last year, the Hive brand crossed the pond in hope of breaking into North America, and what better way to start 2018 than launch a new product in all markets simultaneously for the first time? That brings us to the new Hive View home monitoring camera: An attempt to balance style and feature set to stand out from the crowd.
It wasn't long ago, just last summer, that Hive launched its first security camera. Requiring its own specific app and with no cloud storage option, it was a simple affair. And so it was back to the drawing board for the Hive View. That said, the new home monitoring camera has many of the specs and features common to competitor products. We're talking 1080p livestreaming to the Hive mobile app, nightvision, a 130-degree field of view and Bluetooth pairing for a simple setup process.
Motion and sound sensors, the sensitivity of which are adjustable, will trigger notifications on your smartphone and entries into an event log. Thanks to a dedicated video analytics chip, the camera can also distinguish between people and, well, not people -- meaning you can set it to ignore the family cat wandering in and out of frame. You get a rolling 24 hours of video storage for free, or 30 days with the monthly subscription plan. For the paranoid, there's a scheduling feature that turns the thing on and off at times of your choosing, in addition to an on/off switch on the actual device.
Fairly standard stuff among home monitoring cameras these days, but then most existing products look basically identical: An eyeball on a pedestal. Form is one of the ways the Hive View hopes to get noticed. Designed by serial consultant Yves Béhar, its cuboid body and curved arm are an attractive break from the norm. The ball-and-socket base and rotating head lets you experiment with all kinds of Kubrickian angles. The base is actually made of two parts held together by strong magnets, allowing you to mount the thing on walls and ceilings and pull it down to set up elsewhere when needed. It also comes in two rather lavish color schemes: White and "champagne gold," as well as black and "brushed bronze."
This form also conceals a pretty unique function. Just as you can detach the base from the magnetic mount, so you can detach the cube from the base -- Hive calls this "grab and go." Say you want the camera to watch an open back door while you're airing out your place on a hot day. Instead of moving the whole thing, base and power cable, you pop the camera off and it's good for about 1 hour to 90 minutes untethered, depending on how often it's triggered.
In the near future, Hive wants to make its home monitoring cam more than a peace-of-mind device with a special "moment mode." Kind of like Google's Clips camera, the idea is you point the Hive View away from your front door and at something you want to capture for the right reasons, like your kid's birthday party. It'll then take pictures at intervals to document the event so you don't have to, as well as making the "grab and go" functionality a bit more useful day-to-day.
Announcing future features on day one might seem promising, but it also highlights what isn't available out of the box. Basic things like two-way audio and digital zooming aren't live at launch. The detection feature is very limited, too. Hive View can tell you it's spotted a person, but the push notification doesn't include a picture at the moment. You have to scan through the footage yourself for that info.
Another issue with Hive View is convoluted accessibility. It launches in the UK today for £189 for a single camera or £319 for a two-pack (there's no hard limit on how many the Hive app will support, though your internet probably won't like 12 livestreams running at once). But, you need a Hive Hub to get the thing online, which is another £80. That's a pricey extra, especially when the camera isn't fully entrenched in the Hive ecosystem just yet -- meaning it won't turn your connected lights on when it detects a person, as an example of what's promised in future updates. Oh, and we almost forgot to mention the Hive Video Playback subscription at £5 more per month.
There are also a couple of payment plans that include the View and various other Hive devices available to Brits. In the US and Canada, though, you can only buy one of these product packages to put one of the new cameras in your home, provided you're not already on the Hive bandwagon, that is. If you're an existing customer, you can simple buy a View for $200 (CAD $239) or spread the cost over 24 months. The 30-day rolling footage subscription is $6 (CAD $7) extra per month.
If you're entirely new to the Hive range, however, then you have to purchase the entire "Close to Home" bundle, which includes smart lighting, motion sensors and plugs. This can be purchased for $350 (CAD $439) or spread over two years, but if you like the look of the View camera, you've gotta buy all sorts to get it. And if you've got yourself other brands of smart home gear plugged in already, then it just doesn't make sense to double up, now does it?

Lola's introduction to Common Knowledge
Two twin buildings on California Avenue, Seattle. Sixth floor, last door on the righthand corridor as you stepped out of the golden elevator. The familiar cherry red carpets, so soft and similar to the ones you’d see at JW Marriott hotels, the dustless still lifes signed by anonymous artists hanging from the white and gold striped walls. The way to Benedict’s apartment was still so accurately imprinted in her brain that Lola herself was taken aback by the ease in which she made her way from her taxi, past the lobby (where she’d greeted the same concierge she’d greeted last time around), off to the elevator, same pout checking her lip stain, same lean against the spotless mirrors, same impatient scroll through her Instagram before the elevator’s bell rang gently and the doors slid open. There was a time when she’d run all the way from the elevator to the end of the corridor, where Benedict’s door waited ajar, his tall slender figure waiting, hands in the pocket of his platinum trousers, skin radiating with warmth through the unbuttoned shirt. She’d take her heels off and feel her toes sink in the immaculate puff of the carpets, gravitating towards him at full speed. He’d smile with little but the corner of his mouth, and she’d just jump into his arms, legs locked around his waist, mouth hungry against his own. He was the tragically brilliant designer, she was the child who couldn’t be tamed. His bones ached for an age that had long passed, her body felt at home in the tumultuous mess that New York City is. “I’m leaving for Seattle, tomorrow afternoon.” Benedict informed her drily, pouring absinthe in his morning coffee like always, his bare upper body so raw in the morning light. She looked up at him from her bed, still sweating, but her eyes filled with what felt like resent. “Fine.” Lola had no time for feeling sorry, and deep down thought it wouldn’t last. But it did. He’d been living in Seattle for a longer than she’d expected, rarely ever being the one to endure the six-hour plane flight between them. She simply couldn’t abandon him, and Benedict new that all too well. The conversations were good, the parties were enjoyable, but the sex was glorious, and it was practiced like a sport. Reaching his apartment, she didn’t bother to knock, instead pressed the doorknob gently and stepped inside as if it were her own home, followed by a straight-faced bellboy carrying her luggage. “Oh, Jesus, Benedict” she coughed, wincing before making her way through the thick smoke that clouded his apartment. With a side nod towards the bellboy, she dismissed him with a look that might have meant ‘I’ll take care of it from here’, but God knows what she meant other than opening the damn windows as soon as possible. “I never knew you were so sensitive to your own bad habits.” Benedict replied ironically, his slender figure getting up from his desk, loafers and trousers on, shirt unbuttoned. Dark hair greasy but not dirty, messily parted to the side, reaching little beyond his ear lobe. The signature black Russian cigarette hanging from his bony fingers, eyes irresistible, mouth raised – as always – only at its corner. “Well, I’m not, but this place just stinks of smoke.” Lola snapped back as she reached out on her toes to open window by window, the silk curtains expanding as the wind blew in. She turned around, job done, to face him, his body still in the middle of his living room, hands tucked in his pockets, skin white as ever. “Do you ever button up your shirts?” Lola asked rhetorically, her voice suddenly low as her feet made their way towards him, and now their bodies were inches apart. “I don’t find the point in it” he just shrugged off, his right hand raising to her face, a calloused thumb rubbing her cheek gently. He’d always had this ability to devour her simply by looking at her, so deep she felt he peered right inside her skull, way beyond her eyeballs, catching a glimpse of her brain. A stare so deep it made her stomach twist in arousal every time. His thumb froze on her cheek for a few moments, and then he placed it on her lower lip – she bit it, of course she did, and he just huffed out a smirk. “You’re here for the party, aren’t you?” Benedicts voice was effortless and collected, his question, too, rhetorical. Lola nodded and stepped back from him, her body turning around and headed for the kitchen, tossing her jacket off on the way, but keeping her combat boots on. “Some of them have already come, but mostly they’ll be here with the two thirty flight tomorrow afternoon” the French girl confirmed, her eyes scanning the kitchen counter, picking up and tossing away various empty bottles or packs of Sobranie cigarettes. Benedict’s kitchen was populated by alcohol, packed in all shapes and sizes, rotten fruit and ashtrays, food clearly provided exclusively by room service. “You’ll like it, wait and see” she continued, tossing a grape in her mouth after examining its texture, somewhat surprised it wasn’t stale. “I bet” Benedict replied with an eye roll, pressing his cigarette butt into an ashtray. Rubbing his hands lazily, he walked towards the open-air kitchen, each step calculated like a tick on the clock. His tempo was unperturbable, the luxurious slow motion of his life outside the bedroom still a surprise to Lola. It took little strength to turn Lola around and hop her on the counter, knees spread to make room for his slim body between her legs. “New York’s richest kids start rave in Seattle. I’m gonna love it” he spoke in his forever low voice, each word separated by a bite on her neck, his hands firmly locking her hips in place. “You promised you’d come” Lola whispered, arms loosely draped around his shoulders, but before the realization of innuendo hit her, Benedict’s fingers were already clawing underneath her lingerie she wore as a dress, tugging down the panties she’d put on without a second planning to look provocative. It didn’t matter. “Yeah, I will.” Benedict’s hushed voice ringing in her ear, the hotness between her legs intensifying at a simple touch. +++++++ The venue itself was home to a high profile, exclusivist art gallery owned by one of Barbie’s uncles. It was roughly anything more than an enormous white walled industrial hall with a sound system his owner took great pride in. “It’s the stuff they use in Berlin nightclubs” he insisted on assuring the two girls, as if clubs throughout the States had less performant gear. The decoration process was over in a few hours, with a crew of event planners roaming around the two hundred square meters at disposal, bringing in and taking out bar tables, sofas, a DJ set that would match the aesthetic, a dozen lights to animate the dance floor. The bar was installed and the fridges plugged in, and with the music playing, volume down in the background, the hall needed nothing more than for Lola’s guests to come around. “God, look at this mess.” Barbie slurred with a glass of Martini in hand, the silvery shine of her dress tight against the dampness of her heated body. It was barely half past three at night and every single guest, from a to z, was far from sober or even remotely willing to stop dancing for a minute. Wearing sunglasses indoors, taking off pieces of clothing like they were playing poker, grinding to the tireless beats of the DJ booth, Benedict’s birthday party was a massive success. Only, he wasn’t there. Lola had been texting him the whole evening, and even tried to call a few times after it had gotten too late to be fashionably late, even for a guy like him. In a desperate attempt to reach him, the young girl called the concierge, begging to send someone to knock at his door and remind him he was expected somewhere else. “We’re sorry, madam” the overly polite middle aged man spoke in a perfectly calculated tone “but Mr. LeBlanc is not to be bothered.” She would have thrown her phone at the nearest wall, had there not been so many witnesses. It was exhausting, playing the host, smiling at the camera and seeming surprised this or that had actually made it to the party, while clutching her phone so tight in her hands it might as well have crushed. Lola told nobody she was leaving, but as she stood outside the industrial hall waiting for her Uber to come, she figured everybody was wasted enough not to notice her absence. She hadn’t told even Barbie, but the blond haired beauty was busy keeping the bathroom locked, celebrating Benedict’s birthday to the sound of Ingrid’s cries. Fuck them, for being this goddamn happy and easy to entertain. She’d had enough of it, and as she got inside the black Mercedes, Lola told the driver to turn off the radio. It must have been visible how angry she was with Benedict by the way the concierge let out a gasp he hadn’t had the time to contain. And goddamn right was she ready to rip his head off for what he’d done to her. No more leaning against crystal clear windows. No more pouts, no more scrolls. Just the urgent liberation from the black heels she’d been wearing, her feet moving quickly towards their goal. With a furious push at the doorknob, she was ready to storm in. But the door was locked. She could only admit that after repeatedly trying to slam herself against the door in the dumb, mindless hope that it got stuck in the puffiness of the carpets, or that something might have slipped underneath the mahogany door, stopping it from opening. It wasn’t the case, she resolved after exhaling and, with a last jolt of frustration and anger, she kicked the door with her foot, letting out a sound much like a battle cry coming from a soldier who was barely alive, or in excruciating pain. Lola felt her eyes tear up, and her vision clouded. Fuck you, Benedict. This was a bad joke, or a stupid protest, but regardless of how furious she was it’d even crossed his mind to do this, Lola found herself sitting on the floor, back pressed against the door. Thanks goodness nobody else was home, otherwise she would have never accepted to be this vulnerable on a corridor populated by his neighbours. It must have been almost five o’clock in the morning when she heard the door unlock, but even with all her senses acute, she couldn’t tell whether he was going to open it too. He did, she found out after waiting for a good five more minutes, and by now she was too exhausted to even fight him. When she did get up and open the door to walk in, the only light in his whole apartment was coming from the desk, next to which Benedict was smoking a cigarette in his armchair. Even with his back turned to Lola, she could see he was fidgeting with the cigarette between his bony fingers, sitting cross legged and staring into the distance through the glass walls that surrounded his living room from both sides. “You’re an asshole” Lola said, so loud it surprised even herself, making her instinctively press her palms against his ears. She still hadn’t adjusted from the chaos of the party to the stillness of his apartment. “Don’t act like it comes as a surprise.” Benedict finally replied, smashing the last bit of his cigarette into the ashtray. “You don't even feel bad about this, do you? What’s all these people coming all the way from New York City to celebrate your birthday? Who are all of these, your friends? Fucking hell, Benedict, I sometimes wonder why people even like you.” Lola spoke quicker and quicker, trying to pump herself up and get angry again at him, start a fight, show him how much he’d hurt her. But somehow, she couldn’t get herself in the mood. She couldn't fight him. “Maybe you should ask yourself that first” he retorted and got up from his armchair, turning off the only light that was switched on. “This was, all along, your party, not mine. But sure, I can be your pretext. I’m glad you asked.” His next words cut like a blade, and Lola felt the immediate urge to smash something, to hear shattered pieces fall to the ground, helpless before her wrath. But all she could do was stare in disbelief, watch him shrug off his shirt and head off to his bedroom, biting her lip so hard it almost bled. What a fcker.

SCANNING… RECOGNIZED…
welcome [ AHN JIHYE ], aka [ EDEN ].
DATE OF BIRTH/AGE: August 22, 1997. 19.
ALLIANCE: Sidekicks.
SPECIES: Human.
ABILITIES:
magic the ability to use magical forces to varying degrees
spell casting the ability to cast spells. jihye can cast spells, an action that allows her to magically alter reality to varying extents. it is often a series of words that take effect when spoken, though certain spells are able to be cast merely by thinking, with gestures, with magical objects, or through a ritual of some sort.
healing aura the ability to project an aura of healing and mending energies. she can focus the energies she emits from herself towards those injured to have their physical wounds healed.
potion creation the ability to create beverages that can result in magical effects. jihye can create substances with magical properties such as enhancing physical and mental abilities, healing, granting powers, chancing shape, or bewitching someone depending on the kind of potion that is made.
ecomancy also known as nature magic, the ability to call upon the forces of nature through magic
fauna magic the ability to perform animal-related magic. jihye can use magical spells to control the animals, transform herself or others into animals, mimic animal traits, and summon animal or their spirits. additionally, she can communicate with animals, borrow their senses, possess them, and otherwise use animals as extensions of herself by rendering them as her familiars.
chloromancy the ability to utilize magic involving plants. she is able use a form of magic that allows her to cast magical spells dealing with plants, creating, shaping, and manipulating plants like wood, vines, plants, moss, and parts of the plants such as leaves, seeds, fruits, and flowers. jihye typically uses this power for defense and support by growing plants from the ground to form into shielding structures or by utilizing plant chemicals in her potions to heal people and the like for a wide range of effects.
WEAKNESSES:
there is always a price with magic. always. and it will be paid, one way or another. the price can range from something as insignificant as the magical energy required to activate jihye’s own magic, a part of her sanity, or even something devastating like her own life … or worse.
magic is balance this essentially means that the benefits it provides will result in consequences to equally offset it.
be safe and sound magic obviously drains jihye’s stamina or inner mana to cast spells and he like. naturally, stronger magic puts a much greater strain on her being and requires much concentration, focus, and mental strength. thus, she is required to take sufficient rests to ensure that her magical energy isn’t permanently depleted.
unpredictability is key magic is unpredictable, especially if one gets too creative or is interrupted in a crucial moment or incorrectly pronounces a spell. results range from amusing to annoying to apocalyptic if she’s not too careful.
the ancestors know best without the knowledge or proper skill, the intended use of a spell can create unpredictable or potentially dangerous results. this is the reason why witches are known to rely heavily on spell books and such because very rarely are knew spells introduced into the community, especially since her bloodline is unable to use spells that are beyond their imagination.
it isn’t so simple jihye needs to perform certain actions or fulfill specific conditions in order to use magic, ranging from specific words or phrases, certain movements, materials that must be consumed or even extensive rituals. at this point in time, she is completely unable to perform magic with just thought.
this is equality her healing aura requires giving the wounded her own magical energy to heal faster and more efficiently, and depending on severe the injuries may be, the act may render jihye “magicless” if she gives more than the other should receive.
brewing for one jihye’s potions exist only in a liquid form and cannot be mixed with any other substances for if they are, then their potency can decrease or be skewed dramatically. moreover, potions follow a strict recipe and can ask for outrageous materials like a human heart or eyeball, and then when finished being brewed, the full portion of a potion must be consumed entirely for effects to appear.
welcome to the jungle in regards to her ecomancy, she can only manipulate what already exists. for example, she may summon a bear but cannot conjure one from thin air herself, and the same applies with plant-life—this is why jihye usually carries around a bag of seeds and dirt to ensure that she can sprout plants whenever and wherever possible.
a dog-eat-dog world likewise, she has an assembly of animal familiars at her disposal that she can summon at any time from any place. she usually has one familiar beside her at all times, however, she does not have constant surveillance of her other creatures as they continue to thrive in nature without her. so if they die in the wild, she loses control of them entirely and must return to the initial place where she connected herself to them in order to find a new familiar.
SPECIAL SKILL: ecomancy. jihye’s affinity for nature is what sets her bloodline apart from the multitude of witches out there in the world.
