Making watercolour paint - Nicosia green

Paint-making video I made for my @bookfacearts friends🖌️🪨💚

This colour is Kremer Nicosia green. It's a mixture of green earth and cobalt blue, to mimic the colour of a rare green earth that was once harvested from Cyprus. This earth pigment feels a little crispy-crunchy when you first start to mull, but it smooths out fast. Green earth pigments come from clays that contain one of two green minerals - glauconite or celadonite. The name celadonite comes from the French word 'celadon', indicating its sea green colour as seen here. (Celadon is also used in Europe as a descriptor for a type of jade green ceramic glaze which originated in China.) Glauconite is a more olive green shade. Green earths are my favourite colour Worth noting I wear an appropriate mask when using pigment powder. (Even with something v. safe like chalk - nobody needs to redecorate their lungs 😂)

Different anon from the watercolor style ask: I see BNF Azi being one of thems that hunts down pigments and makes his watercolors from scratch, another reason it takes so long. You can make really good paints from natural pigments and sources but the mixing is key and needs to be methodical. Def fits, IMHO. Natural pigments can be vibrant, but look very different from synthetic colors. I can see him leaning in that direction.

Making Verona green paint. This is a more olive shade of green earth than the Kremer Nicosia green I shared here. I also have a couple of other green earths (Ok, ok... 5 of them because it's my favourite colour,) including one gathered by another artist from her backyard clay. I've made chalk paint from rocks in my own back garden, shale paint from my sister's, and I want to try making grey clay paint from the soil in my area too, but that's a bit more complicated. The method I want to try is here.

Again, I wore a suitable mask - this is technically a non-toxic pigment but no-one needs to repaint their lungs. Shop-bought pigments come with an MSDS that tells you if you need to wear FFP1/2 masks and/or gloves. Having worked in a lab I still have that stuff kicking around which is handy, but it's worth getting them to avoid dying yourself esp with the stronger synthetic pigments... I mean phthalo blues/greens take so fucken long to get off anything, truly 😅
