Tell me about your blorbos
I want the internet to hear about your wips and anything published! Share your character art on the thread too, if you have it!
My most recent work is a complete space opera about two thirtysomething best friends trying to navigate life, love, and their careers - under the shadow of a tyrannical interstellar human government.
Tumblr media
What I'm working on right now is cowriting two projects - a romance with an immortal pirate billionaire cursed by an eldritch god, and the psychologist who gets swept up in his world; and a bronze-age Harappan-set historical fantasy.
I'm also writing a sequel to a different book, The Underlighters - about an underground post-apoc city where a young woman and her friends start seeing strange monsters. And then children go missing...

Just a heads up for anyone who still has a Neopets account, Jellyneo is reporting “Neopets Being Actively Hacked, Passwords + Emails Accessible” and their coverage can be found at the link.
We have some serious news today. Thanks to an anonymous tipster, we've been made aware that the database and source code for Neopets.com has been breached, and over 69,000,000 user accounts have been exposed. Full account information, such as email address, passwords, gender, IP addresses, countries, and birthdays are available for sale on a hacker website.
~
What Can I Do to Protect My Account? Due to the nature of live access being available, we do not recommend changing your account password or PIN at this time. (The hacker and/or buyer could just get a new copy of whatever you changed your password to with their live access.) We will post an update when it's safe to update your account credentials. This isn't the first time the Neopets.com site has been breached, and is likely not the last. We cannot emphasize enough that you should be using unique passwords across every website. If you share your Neopets.com password with any other websites, those accounts are highly at risk. Paying $95k to hack Neopets accounts seems pricey, but the value in a purchase like this will be the ability to test your Neopets.com password on many other sites in brute force attacks. If you share your Neopets.com password with any other website, update the password on those other sites immediately.

Your profile didn't allow messages, so you don't have to publish, just fyi! They do sell normal paper-sized colored plastic specifically for laying over sheets of paper to help kids with dyslexia and dyscalculia. My mom got some for my brother in law to help him while he was in EMT school. That's how I knew that the green strip in the magnifying bar would help me. So, those sheets would probably be great for computer screens. You can tape them to the computer of a kid who needs help. And the kit comes with several colors, since the color that helps the most will be individual to each kid, so you can find the one that helps them the most!
Thank you so much for this information! Your original post on the green line magnifier tool made me aware of something I had never encountered before but sounds like it can be very beneficial to anyone needing that help.
Hey @sorikkung this might be useful info for you too since I saw you brought up computer screen reading.

Don’t forget to reset a smart TV before you get rid of it.
Just did some tech support at a distance for my aging parents. Today mom was concerned she could not watch Netflix because it said the account was already in use. We are not a family who shares passwords so she was worried. I walked them through the account to change the password and while in there had dad look to see what devices had been accessing the account. Two were theirs but another was in a different state but the same brand of TV they have bought for years so I asked if they had taken an old one to the dump and they had a few months back.
Nothing had been signed out of before disposal so that is how somebody was happily enjoying the cartoons mom said she had been seeing for the past few weeks as “in progress” on her account. She just kept thinking it was a glitch. This also explained how they got charged for a kids’ movie rental on their Amazon account a few weeks back before I had them change that password.
I am glad the TV got another life if it still could be of use to someone but you can not count on them to sign out for you. Please remember to reset the TV to default factory settings before passing on a smart television and offer to help others in your life do that, especially if they needed your help to set the TV up in the first place.

I don't want to attack you, but maybe you should read this post. I've been seeing this go around, and I really don't want you to get anon hate mail. I obviously don't think it was your intention to be offensive or anything. I wish I could say something more about this, I feel like I don't know enough about this to really have an opinion.
https://americangirlmom.tumblr.com/post/646282676738916352/nethilia-sansseraph-in-pleasant-company-okay
Okay, yeah, I do wanna address this, thank you for bringing it to my attention.
Firstly, I do want to say that I absolutely did not mean to be offensive in any way shape or form. I am deeply sorry to people who were hurt by this, and I would like to at least explain my actions. Not excuse, explain.
This post was made as basically a joke, with me and my friends talking about which outfits for the American Girl dolls seemed the most queer- with all of us being queer, and talking from that perspective. I am fully aware that queer signalling has changed over the years, but AG is a modern brand and I was looking at this from a modern perspective- thus, taking into account stuff like rainbows, elaborate fashion, etc, that a modern LGBTQ would pick up on. I’m not a historical expert nor do I pretend to be, this was simply stuff like “haha Kit wears overalls- we do that, so it’s gay.”
Secondly, about Kaya- I once again apologize deeply, but I also want to make it clear that this was a very “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” scenario. I included all the other historical characters, and was clearly using gay as a positive term, so leaving Kaya out would imply that she can’t be on the list because she’s Native. Including her also opened up issues because all of her outfits are cultural, and is that implying that this cultural outfit was “made to signal queerness”? I eventually decided to err on including her, with putting one of her more modern outfits, because I didn’t want to overlook her completely. If it does still come across as offensive, please let me know and I’ll delete her from the post with a short explanation as to why.
Let me know if there’s anything else I can address or if there’s something more I need to understand. Thank you.

Your posts about doll collector Karens reminded me of this series of posts by Nethilia (who is Black and has been active in the American Girl fandom for 20 years) chronicling the racism (and anti-paganism and various other prejudice and drama) that she has encountered in the AG doll collecting world. It seems like something you might be interested in reading, so here’s a link:
https://americangirloutsider.blogspot.com/search/label/why%20i%27m%20an%20outsider
-----------------------------
Oof, yes, I have read that one. It’s...a lot.
And an important reminder that, however irritating the drama I get for calling out racism in the community, it’s still not an issue about me. It’s not personal. I don’t deal with the BS that Black collectors in majority-white doll spaces must face constantly.
I’ve never had the paganism issue come up, but since they’re not children’s toys anymore, antique dolls don’t seem to attract the Everything Must Be G-Rated Christian Content(TM) crowd as much as AG does. There are a lot of conservative Christian collectors, I’m sure, but the movers and shakers of the antique world tend to keep things pretty secular.
(Or they’re urbane gay men. Or both. Not that urbane gay men can’t be prejudiced, but they’re not likely to clutch their impeccable agate collar studs over photos of a naked doll because it’s “immodest.”)
It’s also interesting to me because my doll community never had forum drama. We skipped right from in-person “Betty’s casserole was dry at the last club meeting” drama to “misrepresenting $10,000 dolls at auction” drama. There are no antique doll forums, that I know of. The community is finally being dragged kicking and screaming into the Internet age, mostly in the form of a thousand unconnected FB groups.
But I digress. This blog series is well worth a read for anyone wanting to delve into more doll drama, with extra Karen sauce.

Tutorial: How to fix your American Girl doll’s frizzy hair (without spending a lot of money)
Tumblr media
If you have an older American Girl doll that you’ve played with a lot, this is almost definitely something that has afflicted your doll: after brushing her hair a few times, the ends of her hair become a frizzy, tangled mess that no amount of brushing can ever seem to fix. Even when the doll’s hair is braided or hid under a hat, the volume of the frizz is a huge distraction, and makes your doll seem cheapened and ruined.
The official response from American Girl themselves is always something along the lines of, “just spritz it with water and brush it some more until it’s smooth”. This doesn’t work, of course. Their other solution is to send your doll into the doll hospital for a new head. That not only costs more than $50 to do, but your doll will return with an entirely new face, one that you might not like quite as much. And it certainly does not prevent the frizzy hair from returning.
Currently, and probably forever, the doll hospital does not offer the option of putting a new wig on dolls. They claim it’s because the strong glue on the wigs prevents them from doing so. This isn’t entirely true, because it’s possible to do that yourself; but that’s only an option if you have another wig ready to go. (You can learn how to re-wig your doll with my tutorial [here] if you’re wanting to go that route instead.)
But if all you want is to restore your doll’s hair to its (almost) original shine and smoothness, then you have several very affordable options that I can recommend and will show you how to do here.
I’ll warn you now: these techniques involve using heat on your doll’s hair. That’s something that American Girl officially advises against, but seeing as how they are speaking to an audience of young children and you are not a young child, then I’m going to trust you to safely handle the heat and carefully monitor your doll’s hair from melting. If you aren’t attentive and careful, you run the risk of permanently damaging your doll’s hair.
I’ll also warn you NOT to use these methods on dolls with textured hair. This will flatten out the strands and make the hair smooth. If your doll with this hair type is in need of hair care, I suggest using braid spray. Spritz it and brush it through using a wire wig brush until it’s detangled. (Credit for this method must go to Nethilia of American Girl Outsider). Braid spray is a hair product designed specifically for wigs, and can be found at Amazon or in the hair care aisle of most stores. But it’s not just for textured hair; even dolls with smooth hair will benefit from it as a maintenance tool.
Speaking of... I have to insist that you only brush the doll’s hair when the hair is wet, and ALWAYS use a wire wig brush on your doll’s hair. Always. The metal bristles prevent static that can cause frizz, and using a brush that’s been used on human hair can transfer damaging oils to the doll’s hair. You can either use an official American Girl hairbrush or find an inexpensive knockoff on Amazon. I use Sophia’s brand hairbrush and am very pleased with it.
Tumblr media
While you’re picking up a brush, make sure to get a spray bottle of some kind. The dollar store has them. Every time you brush the hair, spray it with a bit of water (or braid spray) first, THEN brush.
Once you have those tools, you’re ready to fix the hair.
I’ll be using Kaya as my helper in showing you two different ways to fix doll hair. I love Kaya, but her hair can be tricky to keep maintained. It’s very coarse towards the ends, and extremely prone to frizz and tangling in the brief moments that it’s not braided.
Tumblr media
She has very kindly agreed to be put through each step.
Option one: Use a straightening iron
This is probably the least labor-intensive option, and good for dolls with smooth, fine hair. We’ll talk about this method first before discussing the second.
While this is the easiest method, this also won’t work with all hair, like especially curly and matted wigs. If you aren’t sure, test a small section of doll hair, towards the back of the head where any mistakes won’t be obvious. If the hair burns or doesn’t straighten, then move on to the next method.
Let me repeat that if you are not attentive and careful, you run the risk of burning or melting your doll’s hair. Please follow all the steps accurately, and don’t try to take shortcuts. You should be prepared to spend about an hour straightening the hair. What you’ll do is section off a small segment of hair, spray it thoroughly with water, then run the straightening iron over it. Then you’ll comb through it to make sure it’s been properly smoothed.
To begin, set your straightener to the LOWEST SETTING, if possible.
Tumblr media
If your straightener only has one heat setting, test a small section of wet hair first before proceeding with the rest of the wig.
Put a towel down on a countertop. It’ll be getting very wet. Set your doll down face-up. Cover her face with a dry towel to keep her eyes dry.
Separate a small section of hair, spritz it with water from a spray bottle, and brush it out. Start from the end, and work your way upwards towards the head.
Tumblr media
Keep the hair wet at all times. The water will protect the hair from burning.
Tumblr media
Pull the section of hair very taut.
Tumblr media
Then starting from the ends of the section, run the straightener over the hair. Keep it moving; don’t hold it in place.
Tumblr media
Keep spritzing the hair and straightening until the section of hair is smooth. This will happen very quickly.
Keep a close eye on the hair. If it seems to be burning, get the hair wet again, or turn down the heat if it’s not on the lowest setting. It’s okay if the hair steams; that’s just the heat reacting with the cold water. Repeat this on the rest of the hair until the frizziness is gone.
I didn’t do all of Kaya’s hair because I have to save it for part 2, so here’s Kirsten and Felicity after having their hair straightened with this method.
Tumblr media
Option two: Boiling water and ice water
If this doesn’t work on your doll’s hair, or you don’t want to use a straightening iron, then you can use water to smooth her hair. This is a method that works on all types of hair, even dolls with curly, coarse, or wavy hair.
While more broadly effective, this method is a little more risky for the hair, and for the doll, since getting water in her eyes is a good way to turn them silver or rust them shut. I highly recommend taping cotton balls over your doll’s eyes, or protecting them a similar way. Getting too close to the steam can damage them.
To begin, you’ll need two cooking pots. Set them side by side on a stove. You need them to be as close together as possible.
Fill both pots with water. Dump a few cups of ice into one of them. Turn the burner on underneath the other pot. You’ll end up with one pot of boiling hot water, and one pot of icy cold water.
Let the hot water come to a boil. At this point you may turn off the burner if you want, but after a while the water won’t be hot enough, and you’ll have to reheat it. So I recommend turning it down to a simmer. You’ll see some small bubbles and steam. That’s what you want. If the ice in the other pot melts, add more ice.
Separate and brush out a small section of your doll’s hair. Have the brush handy; you’ll need it frequently in the process.
Then, carefully, dip the section of hair into the hot water for NO LONGER than it takes to saturate the hair.
Tumblr media
I’m talking NO MORE than five seconds AT MOST. Dip it all the way in, then IMMEDIATELY remove it.
Quickly dip it into the ice water.
Tumblr media
Dip it all the way in. This halts the melting process, so it’s important that it be done both swiftly and thoroughly.
Let it sit for a few seconds, then pull it out and brush it through until it’s detangled. Don’t forget to brush it; this is necessary to smooth out the hair.
It likely won’t be perfectly smooth the first round, so you’ll probably need to repeat the process on each section of hair 1 to 3 times before it’s sufficiently de-frizzed. That’s okay! Just keep the rhythm:
Dip hot, dip cold, let cool, brush it out.
Be patient and attentive. If it’s being stubborn, don’t let the hair sit too long in the hot water; just keep repeating the process.
Here’s Kaya’s beautiful hair after being straightened and de-frizzed by the hot water/cold water method:
Tumblr media
With either method, you shouldn’t need to use this as a maintenance tool to keep your doll’s hair smooth, UNLESS you don’t take care of it. Try to keep the brushing to a minimum, and do it only when necessary. And if you use water or braid spray and a wire brush EVERY time you do brush it, you won’t have to do this again.
I linked my re-wigging tutorial at the top of the post, so if you don’t like the results of this, then consider giving your doll a new wig. You can search eBay or Etsy for “american girl doll wig” or “18 inch doll wig” or “size 11 doll wig” (doll heads are 11 inches around). They can run anywhere from 10 to 50 dollars, depending on what the seller thinks they are worth.
