I think these conversations would go better if we conceptualized terms like "homophobia", "transphobia", and "misogyny" not as the "basic" oppression that you start with until you sprinkle intersectionality on top, but rather as names for where more complex experiences overlap.

"Transphobia" is not the "base" we start with and build on with other experiences; it's the place where more specific experiences overlap. It's the middle of the venn diagram where "transmisogyny", "transandrophobia", and "exorsexism"/"nbphobia" all overlap with each other.

It's the thing we all have in common; not the thing that some people get extra special versions of while others do not.

#like i think there's a place for virtually any kind of more specific label #even differentiating the experiences of white people with misogyny for example- #not because there is any kind of white oppression. but because misogyny is shared between everyone experiencing it but there is no 'default #implying that white experiences are the default is weird!! and it could in fact open up room for conversations abt other experiences #to frame them as equally a part of the conversation about misogyny #rather than something fringe and niche that is only relevant sometimes #THAT SAID under the current cultural understanding that'd be a dangerous place to start this kind of shift in language use #but like. understanding this on a fundamental level does make conversations about things like transandrophobia waaay easier y'know? #it's not about whether we're More Oppressed it's just about naming different experiences

I thought perhaps the BURGLAR'S GUIDE would also be covered under said coupon, since it was publisher-specific (alas: it was Not, but we might as well bundle for shipping purposes). And then while I was shopping IRL for gifties I found a copy of ROOM, which has been on my list for...ever? So! Hopefully these will hold me over on the nonfiction front for a minute!

in my head mike wheeler is the film bro cinephile of the party. hes a big brad pitt fan and fincher is his favorite director if you even care.. dirty dancing would be in his top 4 if he was honest. he went to see dune cause hes a scifi nerd, ended up hating it so much and complained about it to will but still gave it 2 stars cause it was pretty. did leave a very mean review. very critical rater but mostly leaves high ratings because he just doesn’t watch things he doesnt wanna see.

Vessels having a huddling instinct the way that some other insect species do

They don't put off body heat the way other living things do because they are void, but huddling acts as sort of a safety in numbers/comfort/social bonding mechanism. Stressed/injured vessels will huddle together or seek out a huddle with other bugs they are familiar with for safety and comfort. Very relaxed vessels will also seek out a huddle for social bonding and physical contact. They might fall asleep huddled where they feel safest

I headcanon they're actually a very social species (completely opposite of what the Pale King intended because lol irony) primarily due to the void being an interconnected unified web of mingling consciousnesses from which all vessels come from. (Think drops of water breaking away from a large body of water)

This makes vessels with trust issues and traumatic touch-aversion especially tragic since they are hardwired for social intimacy and connection. Not to say they can't be introverted or less inclined for heavy social participation willingly as individuals ofc, but to have no choice in the matter or to be fearful and mistrusting due to trauma and painful experiences is a definite huge ouch

Hollow growing up in the palace being treated like an inanimate object and deprived of any and all ability for self expression and starved of social connection would mess them up even more if vessels as a species thrive on being socially connected with other bugs and Hollow is touch starved but too conditioned/hurt to seek out what they desperately want but are afraid to ask for T_T
