I love your Ulysses animations so so much. I think I watched the "I know you're a goddess" and the "This is my goodbye" one on a loop probably thirty times each since yesterday. The facial expressions are so good.

Goddess:

The way his shoulders tilt the opposite way!! The hands/arms movements in general! This is my goodbye:

the mean smile when he says "this way you won't plague my life" when five seconds ago he called her his friend and now he says he chooses to cut her out (because she threatened to do it first) and he keeps looking so sad all throughout even when he's mad and defiant and you can just feel that they care about each other (or that he cares about her. God feelings are harder to grasp) and are mad with the other I just love it so much and I feel so sad? They feel like they're taking cheap shots at each other just to hurt but they're only able to (or only need to) because they just care so much and I am so there for getting my heart ripped out like that. So, yeah, I love that smile.

the shot where she's behind him and bends to talk to his ear!!!!!!!!! I just - it's so pretty! Not in a… I dunno. Pretty might not be the right word. Powerful? I just absolutely love it. It talks straight to my hindbrain.

also Athena's design. The not-quite-humanness of her face (her eyes! (how much room they have to narrow to slits when she's pissed!) her mouth! the line economy, contrasted by Ulysses' scruffiness). Her sheer height. The way she tilts her face arrrgh I can't I just love it so much.

the way they just spent three full minutes screaming at each other but he still looks gutted when she leaves.

(for context, this is the first I hear about the musical it's from, I just, like, read the Iliad and/or the Odyssey long enough ago that I forgot most of it and have passing familiarity with the overall plot and a few select scenes but not much more)

Wait actually I wanna talk about some frames agah

So with these frames specifically. On the first one, I wanted him to look like he's searching her expression for any shred of remorse or regret or anything to hint that maybe she cares. Then he turns away, bitter, when he finds none.

And ahhhh this frame

This was the frame that got me to make the animatic. I really wanted to draw this out so that's why I started the whole thing haha. I wanted two things out of it: 1. Power imbalance. Their relationship is always gonna pretty unbalanced in terms of authority and power alone. She's a Goddess and he's a man, it's clear who's got the upper hand. 2. I wanted it to look like she was speaking directly into his ear. To show it as a cold, calculated action, and also to have it be emblematic of when advisors or generals whisper strategies to the king. She might have once done the same action to guide him, but now she's doing it to tell him she's done.

And OUGH this frame

So you've probably already caught Telemachus, Penelope, Polites, and Astyanax in the frame. But also. Also. Since this appears in the line "you're just a man", it's like. It's not quite the ghosts of the dead, since Penelope and Telemachus are there. It's more an embodiment of his loss, his weaknesses, really. What he's already lost and what he still stands to lose. He's just a man because he cares and he loves and he yearns. It's his ruin as much as it's his reason to keep fighting, at least in her eyes.

WIP ask game: "backflip, faceplant", please! (also what's your ao3 handle? if you got one/don't mind/other)

Backflip, faceplant!  Of all of these working titles, this is the one I think might work best as an actual title.  It’s fun to say—imagine me tilting my head one way and then the other as I say it—and more importantly it doesn’t require a full six-degrees-of-kevin-bacon word association game to make sense to a viewer outside my head:  it’s what happens in the first scene of the fic.   

Essentially, this is my Dick Grayson character exploration, turned sort of emotional fix-it.  Dick gets kicked around so consistently in canon that he often doesn’t actually have the opportunity to live up to the Eldest Daughter characterization fandom loves to give him, and I am in the fashion of comics fans everywhere creating my own timeline mishmash to allow for a different outcome. 

What if before Jason died, Dick had managed to carve out a little space separate from his anger with Bruce, for the foundations of the brotherly relationship we all want them to have?  What if the first time he laid eyes on Tim, Dick turned a piece of his grief for Jason into determination to grow an even better brotherly relationship with him?  And what if Dick’s choice to grow those relationships had knock-on effects all the way down the line? 

Featuring such highlights as:  Tim and Babs conspiring to make sure Dick is never without backup in Bludhaven, professionally emotionally and otherwise; brain-scrambled Jason still pretty much autopilot adopting Damian in Nanda Parbat because when a kid falls over in front of you, you pick them the fuck up; ongoing ‘who can spill punch on the worst gala guest’ competitions between the Foxes and Waynes (surprise winner Kate Kane); the Titans and the Teen Titans and Timmy’s Weirdass Friends Too all working together better and more often; me rejecting p much everything New 52 except Strix, Strix can stay; a gargoyle with Dick Grayson’s perfect butt being commissioned for the Gotham Belltower as a loving and heartfelt tribute to everybody’s best big brother. 

I’m just writing whatever nonsense makes me happy with no regard to pacing, so it's gotten pretty sprawling—past sprawling, really, probably if I were going to post it up, I'd have the main story as one work and then a second work with multiple chapters of excerpted scenes—but it’s emotionally rewarding and an excellent thought exercise for me trying to decide what parts of DC’s bonkers-ass timeline(s) I think are important. 

Crime Alley natives only respond well to respect, and they never feel comfortable unless they’ve got the advantage.  Dick settles at the edge of the mat, dropping into an easy flat-footed squat, eye-level with the kid.  The kid immediately stands up from his crouch, and Dick doesn’t smirk, just tilts his head up to keep meeting his eyes.  “That was a good tumble.”  The kid’s looking for a lie, but he won’t find one.  He’d landed on his face in the end, sure, but he’d fallen well.  “You’ve got good balance, got reach—great instincts, which is more important.  Once you get the footwork down, you’ll be set.”  Dick, looking up into those suspicious eyes, realizes as he says it exactly how true it is.  It’ll be tricky, walking the line between Crime Alley and Bruce’s particular brand of do-goodery, but once the kid gets his feet underneath him, he’ll be amazing.  Well.  Nothing else for it, really.  There’s nobody better at finding a tricky balance point than Dick.  “Here, let me show you.”

Hi! Might it be possible to fill out the fills information in the fill submission form instead of in the tumblr post, please? (like, title, ship, tags, etc.). Because it makes a lot of sense for fic fills to have this info before the fill so people can decide whether to read it, but since art fills show the art first, the reader already has seen the whole art by the time they get to that information, so it feels superfluous (and kinda clunky) to me, and I'd rather not have to show it there.

@fandomtrumpshate is a charity drive centered around the creation of fanworks (fanart, fanfic, services (like betaing or podcasting), etc.; the vast majority of things are fandom-centered but it's not actually a prerequisite); the way it works is: you bid on an auction set up by a participant; on march 9th, the winner is selected; I (let's say you bid on my auction) contact the winner, who then makes a donation of the amount that won the bid to one of the charities on the list, and sends me the proof of donation; I send the proof of donation to fth, contact the winner to check what exactly they want, make it and then send it to them (they pay for the shipping); more info there: https://fandomtrumpshate.tumblr.com/FAQ (look around their blog for the other participants too!)

Timetable:

The example medaillon is already done and will be sent immediately if the highest bidder chooses those symbols. I can make other single- or double-sided medaillons in a couple weeks. For more than two sides, or if you want your medaillon glazed instead of painted, it may take a few months.

Why do you keep saying medaillon, isn't it just a necklace?

I can send it as a necklace (with waxed cotton string and a toggle clasp (the ones shaped like an I and an O) or just a knot) or just the medaillon if you want to hang it on a wall; we can discuss that later: as long as I already have the materials at hand I can do whatever you like best.

Symbols available:

I am mostly into Marvel and DC (and Teen Wolf but I don't think they have clear character-related symbols?), but if you want simple geometrical symbols from other fandoms (or non-fandom) I can do it too (just send me a reference).

Glaze? Paint? What's the difference?

The symbol can be painted on with stained glass-imitation paint, solvent-based. This solution is faster (a couple weeks), since I already have everything on hand. Or it can be glazed (glaze is a glass-like color/material fired at very high temperatures; it is very sturdy: you'll break the medaillon before you manage to scratch it, dilute it, or flake it off; the one I use is shiny). Glaze takes more time (a few months) because I need to make a new clay medaillon, wait for it to dry, get it to the kiln, wait for the kiln people to fire it, add the glaze, and get it to the kiln again for a second firing. The pattern will probably be lightly raised. I have slightly less glaze than paint colors, and black glaze is for now an issue (I can't guarantee it'll look good). I will ask you to cover the shipping costs in addition to the donation. Hiya!

I thought maybe I'd post something for any of the handful of people who might be interested what I've been up to and don't share a discord server with me! I know I haven't posted much of anything on ao3 in forever and that's because I've been so busy writing, lol. Honestly, it's true. My crazy ass signed up for three concurrent bangs and I wrote two fics for one of those!!!! So here's what you have to look forward to between July 20th and Aug 14th:

July 20th: @capreversebb fic #1 posts: a collab with the awesome @koiponderingarting!!! It's canon divergent, 7k, featuring a feral WS!Bucky set immediately after CA:WS. Rated E, tags include extremely dubious consent, bottom Steve, rough sex

July 25th: my second @capreversebb fill, a collab with the wonderful @nolanfa! This one is a canon adjacent 5k oneshot with a WS!Bucky who has gotten free of HYDRA and is traveling with a giant wolfdog. July 29th: @silver-fox-steve-bang!!! I've been dying to get this one out there, I finished it what feels like forever ago back in March or something, lol. This one is a canon divergent 6k oneshot set after CA:CW and features a Nomad Steve but with gray hair. Art will be from Emmatheslayer who I can't tag bc she's not on tumblr, lol. “Of course, I know what it is!! I’ve been avoiding it for fucking years, and an hour with you,” Derek jabbed his finger into Stiles’ chest. “ruined it.”

“Me!?” Stiles threw his hands up, then let them fall with more flare than the argument warranted. “This is my fault? Really, Derek, that’s what you’re going with?”

Derek looked away, shame and self-hate boiling over. “No.” Derek eased down, sitting on the edge of his bed before looking to his bedside table. “It’s always my fault.”

There it was. The base of woven asters plopped on a sea of dark crimson rose petals. The asters were twined with the bittersweet flower and pink carnations blooming. Along their twisted stems sprouted blue forget-me-nots, Honeysuckle, and Purple Hyacinth. Stiles looked back to Derek with tears in his eyes. “Fuck, dude, it’s not always your fault.”

Derek huffed. “Don’t call me dude.”

anything about Superior and/or Winter Quarters?

Hi nolanfa--sorry it took me so long to get to this ask! Life...ya know, it's crazy sometimes.

So I already answered about Winter Quarters here. So here's a Director's Cut about Superior.

Aaaahhh…this fic… I really like this fic!  I mean, I guess I like all the fic I’ve written or I wouldn’t have written them, but this one makes me especially happy for a couple of reasons.  First, it was the second winterhawk fic I wrote, so I had one under my belt and had sort of gotten over that hurdle, so I could relax a little with this one and I wasn’t so tenuous about it.  Second, I set a goal for myself with Superior that I didn’t want it to get out-of-control-long—I wanted to keep it tight and to the point—and I felt like I was successful in doing that, so that made me super happy.

When I write fic for internal reasons, it’s usually because a snippet of a scene will hit me and that starts me off running with an idea.  When it’s for external reasons (in this case, the fic was for an auction winner) I will usually spend a good amount of time just turning things over in my head for a while until a fic will start to form.  In this case, the auction winner wanted a Canadian Shack fic, but I’m a super visual person/writer. Like, I see the action in my head and then basically just try to transcribe what I see. And also, I need to be able to visualize everything: the room, the clothes, the gestures, etc.   But, Canadian shack just wasn’t conjuring up any images for me, so instead, I set the fic in a place I was familiar with—the coast of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin.  It’s a really beautiful place with red rock cliffs (it’s a unit of the National Park Service—the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore). Once I had that fixed in my head, the rest of the fic started to take shape.

But my most favorite thing about Superior was the scene where Clint is running through the woods to try to save Bucky.  That scene came to me as I was brainstorming, crystal clear, and I could not wait to get it on paper because wounded, BAMF Clint is like my favorite thing in the world (hnngg).  In fact, I had it on paper before almost anything else.  It was my target. Like, here’s this scene I can so clearly see, but it’s obviously not going to happen until late in the fic, so now I have to come up with a whole fic to get them there, lol.  I literally had nothing but that scene in my head and I had to figure out how to get to it.  I wrote like, 20k+ of fic to get Clint to that position where he’s running through the woods barefoot and barely dressed.  Mmm, I don’t think I’m communicating this the way I want…I had that scene in my head and then I had to create 20k words of fic to plausibly get him to a place where it made sense for him to be running through the woods barefoot and barely dressed.  Yes, that’s what it was. 😊

I also enjoyed writing Fury in this fic, in the beginning and then at the end as well.  He’s fun to write but I never feel comfortable enough to write him in anything but small doses.  But that scene where he’s talking to Clint when he wakes up in the hospital was sooooo fun to write and another one that came to me very early and that I was anxious to finally get to. 

What else…Oh, the place where Clint and Bucky end up after they leave Lake Superior—Crex Meadows—that was someplace that the auction winner sent me pictures of as we were discussing what the fic might/could be, because it’s someplace they particularly liked.  It didn’t really spark anything in me and then I moved on to the Apostle Islands, but I wanted to give them what they wanted so I worked it into Clint and Bucky’s flight from Hydra. 

And Jasper.  Oof.  I have such mixed emotions about the whole SHIELDRA Jasper.  On the one hand, it’s great fodder for angst and turmoil.  On the other hand, I hate that they did that to Jasper. Sigh.  But, in this case, it worked really well to make him the bad guy because he and Clint would know each other well and it ramped up the angst with Clint and Phil.      

Oh, lastly, I guess, I’ll add that the little bit about the stick through Clint’s foot was something that the auction winner mentioned to me, not at all in the context of “please include this” but as sort of an aside of something that happened to a friend (I think), and I just had to include it because it worked perfectly.  And then I had great fun with Phil and Nat’s reactions to it.  I think I got more comments from readers about that then anything else, lol.
