Attempt number 3 of pokeberry dyeing in this house. This time I used distilled water instead of tap water like the other two times. But then the dial got bumped (this keeps happening ??? Don't know how to stop it from happening) and the berries started boiling before I noticed. So, this might end up brown again just because of that.
But... this looks a lot closer to the color I got the first time I dyed with pokeberry, at the last place I lived. More salmon pink than anything else. Way too early to tell, but I'm hopeful.
In other news, I think my iron mordant might be ready for a test run soon. And the tannin bath (mostly acorn shells and caps) is looking strong. I've got another batch of acorns to put in the bath so I need to decant it and take the old stuff out, it's just a bit of a pain. Doing all my dyeing stuff on another floor sucks. But still, it's going.

So apparently pokeberry is a great dye plant. The berries and roots are used.
The berries are extremely pigmented and make a bright fuschia dye, but like all berry dyes it's not very colorfast and fades quickly. They're easy to collect and easy to dye with, only requiring vinegar as a mordant. Vibrant, if short-lived, color with ten million how-to articles.
The root is said to make, quoted from Wikipedia, "A fine red dye". I looked at the source from wikipedia, a brief description of plants of the Americas from the late 1700s, which goes into no more detail.
If I just search for pokeberry root, I get sold quack remedies and tinctures. If I search for pokeberry root dye, I get overwhelmed by results about dyeing with the berries.
The entirety of the plant is toxic to mammals. The root is the most toxic part, tea infused from it can kill an adult. I just want someone to tell me ANYTHING about how this dye was produced and used so I DO NOT get tempted to try it myself.
I'm going to be removing pokeberry plants from inconvenient spots in my lawn anyway this summer. WHAT IF i were to just. Tie the roots up to the rafters of the garage to dry out. Would that be too swamp hag of me.

Pokeberry, aka pokeweed, inkberry, poke salad, and more, Phytolacca americana is a luminous natural dye which can achieve incredible shades of fuchsia and magenta for ecofashion and ecoprinting. While this dye will fade in sunlight (i.e., moderate to low light fastness), it is great for indoor projects and will last for years out of direct sun. This plant is native to large areas of central, east and southern North America but has naturalized in areas of Europe and Asia where it can be invasive. While the fresh shoots and other components have historically been used as traditional medicines and as food sources, pokeberries are poisonous and processing requires some additional safety steps.
Come discovery the amazing shades you can achieve with pokeberries - from bright deep pinks through to reds and oranges, it's a dynamic dyer which responses in unusual ways to temperatures. Colours from natural dyes is a great way to contribute to sustainability and responsible environmental choices.

More mulling left to do, but the color off my pokeberry lake is spectacular! I am so glad because I really didn't want to go back in the brambles to get to my local patch. I love these berries, I used to play with them when I was younger growing up in Atlanta. I would make ink from them and mix it with my mud paint I made from the red clay. I've always been fascinated by colors found in nature, and I get excited when I find one as vibrant as the phthalos and quins.

Here’s how the pokeberry yarn turned out. It’s a rich, deep burgundy color. I wish it would have been more purplish, but it’s still really pretty. I’m excited to experiment with how it takes modifiers, and to see how lightfast it is.

I literally had to get shirtless while straining this--it was just splashing everywhere. Finally got it all tho, about a liter and a half/a third of a gallon. Done with distilled water, and the wool is alum mordanted (in tap water--I hope that doesn't affect anything but who knows, and I didn't want to carry that much water around). I poured some dye in and then topped it off with vinegar, and we'll see. Cooking on medium in the crock pot to prevent my roommates from changing the dial on the stove and boiling all my dye. Fingers crossed.
