Watching and Crying
I don’t know how this show can top the impact of everything it’s already done and I’m sure there will be a lot more I wish they could’ve done, but let’s go!
Tumblr media
Okay, just straight in, picking up immediately where it left off. Kind of jarring.
Tumblr media
Okay, I guess this is the Titan from the in between.
Tumblr media
Ooh, the heart. I was wondering if there was something more to be done with that.
Tumblr media
Um, what? Is she the Emperor? The Golden Guard? To quote Hooty from last episode: What’s happening?!
Tumblr media
That’s different stained glass, right? I feel like they’re trying to tell me something significant, but it’s not clicking.
Tumblr media
Thanks, I hate it.
Tumblr media
Ominous vibes from Amity. I don’t think I’m ready for this.
Tumblr media
I’m definitely not ready for this!
Tumblr media
Okay, so it’s everyone’s worst nightmare. I’m catching up.
Tumblr media
Eyyy, callbacks. It’s like an inversion of Covention.
Tumblr media
Okay, they keep knocking that hat off and putting it back on. I feel like they’re trying to set up something, but I’m not quite sure what.
Tumblr media
Let’s go, Amity!
Tumblr media
Yes! More of the certified bop that is The Collector’s Theme. ♫ ♪
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, more callbacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can dig it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, uh, mad respect for the attempt, little dude, but I will be shocked if that works.
Tumblr media
That’s probably not good.
Tumblr media
And there goes the hat again. Tell me your secrets, hat!
Tumblr media
Now we’re doing callbacks to Agony of a Witch. I see you.
Tumblr media
Okay, but like, they’re not actually killing off the main character at the end of a Disney Channel show. I’m sad for the characters presumably thinking it, but I can’t pull myself out of the meta perspective.
Tumblr media
Oh, whoa, it’s a Hooty eye. I didn’t even spot that before.
Tumblr media
Oh, that is a look!
Tumblr media
Yes! This is a callback I was fully expecting and I’m thrilled to see it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bookends in finales are one of my favorite tropes.
Tumblr media
Yooo! Titan Luz looks sick!
Tumblr media
Loving the new remix of the theme. ♪ ♫
Tumblr media
Ooh! Okay, that rings a bell.
Y’all know I’ve been thinking about the hat. Ever since Camila picked it up in 3x01 it’s been on my mind. And when I was passing the time between 3x02 and 3x03, I watched reactors do 1x01 and the thought occurred to me that if the writers wanted to do a full circle moment, then maybe they’d throw back to...
Tumblr media
And so this isn’t exactly what I was thinking and doesn’t really involve the hat like I thought it would, but I’m noticing the visual similarity.
(Hang on, let me from the next morning grab a better screencap and...)
Tumblr media
Bookending with Titans getting their crowns. What they deserve.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eeeee! These baby gays always give me life.
Tumblr media
Awww, Hooty, you’re adorable!
Tumblr media
Her.
Tumblr media
Oh my heart’s not ready for this.
Tumblr media
Of course she chose all of them. Oh, and she’s wearing Amity’s necklace!
Tumblr media
Ooh, new door. Finally accomplished what Luz wanted when she tried to find The Collector in the first place.
Tumblr media
Ahhhh! There he is carving palismen! I’m so happy for him!
Tumblr media
And Dell gets to teach the trade to someone new. Oh, and Hunter’s got a new palisman.
Tumblr media
Whoa. Alright, Amity. Get it, queen.
Tumblr media
Eyyyy, Harpy Lilith. I was wondering if we’d ever get to see this.
Tumblr media
Rainestorm looking fabulous.
Tumblr media
Am I sensing chemistry? (And I’m not just talking about abominations.)
Tumblr media
This looks neat, but it’s hard to get a good screenshot with the credits going.
Tumblr media
Eda, also looking fabulous.
Tumblr media
That’s a good shot. Even Boscha showed up. And I’m glad to see Tiny Nose survived the thorny situation she was in when Belos was taking over.
Also...
Tumblr media
Same energy.
Tumblr media
Oh, I’m just noticing Bat Queen’s kids growing up. Such precious little monsters.
Tumblr media
Ooh, a new glyph.
Woop, Youtube shrunk the final image off to the corner. Me from the next morning has to step in again with a better screencap.
Tumblr media
And there we have it.
So, yeah, I’ve watched this twice now. Remind me not to stay up til after midnight waiting for an episode of a show in the future. The second time hit way better when I was well-rested. Er, well, rested anyway.
There were definitely some spots where it felt kind of rushed, and I understand why they had to pack as much as they could into a short space of time, but it still leaves me wishing for more. The nightmares alone could’ve been an episode or two if we’d had a full season 3. But I suppose we can’t dwell too much on what could’ve been.
They did a lot with what they had and made something very meaningful and impactful in my life and I’m sure in the lives of many others. There’s also definitely plenty of room for them to expand into comics or spinoffs, should those opportunities ever arise.
I kind of wish The Collector hadn’t left. For one thing, that last screenshot will always be lacking one character that I would want in a full group shot. And I guess it’s implied that they helped build the new portal door at some point, but I would’ve like too see more of The Collector helping out with the rebuilding efforts. And now I’m quite curious about the Archivists and whatever else is going on in the stars. More potential left open for the future, I suppose.
Gotta say I’m surprised they killed Belos. Not that I’m mourning for him, but I was thinking Luz would probably use the last of her Titan power to imprison him between the realms. I figured that would be a fitting punishment, but maybe killing him was more merciful. And dead to rights, he’d already lived way past his natural lifespan by stealing the lives of others. I’m a little bit surprised that he even could be killed, stubbornly as he clung to life. And I would’ve been afraid to touch that goop for fear of getting possessed, but I guess maybe Luz was still exuding enough Titan power to prevent him from doing that. Anyway, I’m rambling on a tangent now.
Definitely quite a ride. I’m sure I’ll always wish there could’ve been more, but I’m equally sure I’ll always love what we got. And we got so much. Even if we never get anything else, I know this show will continue to spark fond memories in me.

I said I have 4 storylines of Good Omens fanfiction (including the Crossover with Legion). Had I said that today, I would've lied. There's five.
["Diary entry" under the cut, so there's no litany on an unwilling scroller's feed]
NOTE: I haven't seen S2 of GO, not do I intendt to, so beware of canon divergence
Well... The 5th one is less a coherent storyline, more a concept. I was playing Gardenscapes, and suddenly thought "What if F!Crowley were my Antichrist's mother?"
You know, maybe Crowley owed Satan a new Antichrist, or something. I guess, she'd have screwed up this one, too... Well, she'll gladly take over the world, she just won't destroy it.
The conversation (between myself and myself) went about like this:
Me: ...
Also me: what if?..
Me: for fuck's sake, not again
Also me: Lady Crowley...
Me: please stop
Also me: Was Maxine's mother?
Me: whyever would she be her mother?
Also me: because she owed Satan for the ruined Apocalypse, and had to carry the next Antichrist
Me: Maxine doesn't want the Apocalypse, she's a sane politician
Also me: works for Crowley
Me: she also has black hair and blue eyes
Also me: Satan has black hair and blue eyes, Benedict's not his faceclaim, anyway
Me: fine, why would her last name be Frost?
Also me: Satan goes by Lucian Frost on Earth
Me: why would he ever go by the surname Frost?
Also me: a not to Dante's Inferno
Me: I hate you
Also me: 🤪
Me: you're killing me
Also me: with pleasure 😊
[End dialogue.]
Now, like I always do with any new idea, I of course collapsed down into the daydreaming pit, which often turns fanfiction, and original stories alike, into Tolkien-level complex universes you'd need a lifetime to fully explore.
I thought, it could be funny. When Max meets Anathema and Newt's daughter Agnes in Oxford, they can bond over their unhinged families.
"You'll probably think my parents are weird as fuck, they have a pet raccoon they dye black, and pretend is a cat."
"Honey, no, I get you. My mother mentally abuses her house plants, and wears sunglasses at midnight."
Rich people things, I guess. I mean, they're both nepo babies, who would ask questions about why their families are weird. Who would ask questions about why a rising star politician's mother mentally abuses her house plants.
There's a lot of potential for comedy. Crowley's issues with her sister-in-law, for example. Satan and Michael... They have a strange dynamic. The last time they spoke to each other is mentioned in the Book of Jude. But, they both have the familia ante omnia, blood is everything mentality. They support each other's political aim. They would kill for each other. And, Michael feels very protective (possessive, even) over her niece (the family mediator, why do you think she's a perfect diplomat). It would annoy the Hell (Heaven?) out of Crowley. Still, in the end, she and Michael would probably kill for each other, also.
I'd imagine Satan forbidding any contact with his disowned son... I don't know. In my fanfictions (where he is a thing), Maxine and Adam usually do have eventual contact, and consider themselves siblings (do keep in mind, though, Max would always choose her father over her brother). Satan doesn't mind her not wanting the Apocalypse, as long as she's loyal to him. He sees good points in her arguments against. He never really cared for it, anyway, it was mostly the armies.
Also... Maxine rides horses, ever since she was a child. Crowley doesn't get along with animals, everyone knows that. But. She's the nightmare equestrian mom (think soccer mom, only worse - much worse). How does she get along with Max's animals?.. Well, Titan (the hellhound) actually likes her. Ulysses (the horse) tolerates her. Horus (the falcon - yes, Max's so posh she's in the falconry hobby)... I have no idea. He'd probably sit on her shoulder, sometimes. But, Crowley's anxious around him, since snakes aren't usually friends with raptors.
At first, I thought about conflict between Crowley and Maxine. For example, her refusing to ride in the Bentley, because she (every author must place pieces of them in their characters) despises Queen. But... I don't like writing that. I like writing loving, healthy relationships between mothers and daughters. So, it's more "What do you mean you're bad at being a demon? You caused the Fall of Humankind. None of them can compare to you", and"You'll be the perfect Secretary-General of the United Nations, honey". We love mothers and daughters supporting each other here. ❤
I even thought of cute scenarios, like Crowley coiling in Max's crib, because she's anxious, and wants to protect her baby.
Max is fiercely protective of Crowley. That's why she'd be in conflict with Beelzebub - funny enough, for a similar season to the other stories (Beelzebub causes the death of her adoptive mother, after she realizes she's raising the Antichrist). Beelzebub hates Crowley, and the Beast of Rev. will show her very sharp teeth, should someone threaten her mom. Satan's on his family's side, don't worry.
Actually... You know why this story is cool? Horrific things happen to Crowley in my other fics. Not this one. Actually, she's doing great. She's the Queen of Hell. Damn... She'd outrank Beelzebub. She could terrorize... Her? Like I said, I haven't seen S2, Ι don't know the pronouns, and I don't care, you can get them right if it matters to you (I just know in S2 an actress from Bridgerton played her (?)).
As for Satan/Crowley... As long at Crowley's female, I don't mind it. I like it. Good for you, you little serpent tempter. Because, you know I always romanticise the Devil.
Have I any ideas for smut? You bet I do. I even have crack ideas... You know that picture of a female wolf protecting a male wolf's throat? Think that, but Crowley's coiled around Satan in her snake form, and snaps at anyone who wanders close.
So, I let this out into the web. Now I'll have to actually do it. Wish me luck. 😑

Episode 19: Cinderella Four
i took a break, and i'm feeling a lot better about the last few episodes after some reflection. the stuff i said bugs me still does, but not as much. my knowledge of cinderella and my tendency towards pattern recognition lead me to believe something sad is going to happen to four this episode. can't wait!
i would also want you out of my city after the last 2 episodes
amuro is a shitty mentor who's trying his best, which is a good dynamic
amuro clearly trying to help kamille avoid dealing with cute enemy newtypes which has never gone well and probably never will, but he's too traumatized and awkward to explain himself
i do like beltorchika here, she seems nosy and worried for amuro, but in ways that make sense and are conducive to good drama
mirai also good here. trying to respect amuro's privacy, but kamille is close enought to him that she feels like she owes him a partial explanation
four jaywalking and forcing trucks to swerve rules
oooh, it's cinderella because they're meeting up and have to return before midnight
on the one hand you probably shouldn't steal a motorcycle, someone might need that. on the other hand they left the key in the ignition, and at that point it's kind of on you
idk, cyber newtypes have worked about as well as anything else
don't call her #4. i assume she's the 4th cyber newtype and they didn't name her, so she took it as a name?
they have until 12 midnight together :(
idk why this is working so well for me, but i think it's the fact that they're both clearly reaching past their trauma to try and make human connections. even though they just met them wanting to spend time together feels earned to me
i say all that and then the guitar kicks in and i can't take it seriously any more
ok, i support cross faction relationships for good drama, but there is definitely a difference between the fascists who gas colonies and the anti-fascists fighting the fascists who gas colonies. that being said, four isn't necessarily a titan and might not have any clue what's going on outside her bubble beyond "you need to fight these people"
frankly i'm surprised four is the first explicit war orphan we've met who wasn't orphaned on screen, unless i've missed someone. you'd think there'd be more, given that over half of all people died in the one year war
though i guess most of them were civilians and it happened when the cities were destroyed leaving no survivors because australia was turned into a crater, so probably most of the dead parents children also died
four looking for her memories is an archetype i've seen before, but this might be one of the earliest examples
i love the carpet bombing interrupting the romantic music
thank you kamille for remembering that the reason you fight the federation is because they're carpet bombing their own civilian population for sympathizing with the enemy
i really like four being super selfish. it gives her personality beyond "is sad about memories" which isn't always a guarantee
this guy piloting the psycho gundam doesn't know what the fuck he's doing
man, amuro really is a better pilot than kamille
yeah, i bet that thing blows big when it eventually goes
thank god for newtype powers, saving valuable seconds each episode by letting characters just know who it is piloting the mobile suit without any cues
dang, four's cool. this is maybe the most impressive newtype thing we've seen. lalah did some cool stuff, but that was all with stuff set up for her and the lasers weren't too big. four controlling the psycho gundam without any of that is impressive
what's up with the animation of the thing coming in? goes in then out then in again? at 14:45 on the youtube version?
yeah, why not. everyone slap kamille. mirai, i think it's your turn
kamille: a man can't go out to die just because he's been slapped
it's a good line, but i'm not sure the show agrees. 0079 definitely takes your side, but this show seems to have a different perspective on things
i like the way they move through physical space in this fight
oof, she is wrecking this city. might have the highest kill count of any character we've met outside a command role
kamille has jumping on a mobile armors back ever worked?
man :( they probably are lying, but kamille can't know that, and neither can he know the aeug could help
the combat system forces her to fight?
that hizack taking off amuros hand and tackling kamille is by far the most impressive a zaku has been since at least episode 10 of 0079
if beltorchika takes mirai's advice and chills i think i'll end up liking her just fine. she was already a lot better in this episode
i think the show has found its identity, and while i don't necessarily jive with it perfectly i do like this

Tumblr media
Solo Quotes:
Childe: "I like wearing oversized sweaters. Not just because they're extremely comfy and cuddly, but because whenever the sleeves are really big, I get to flop them around and smack people." THIS IS SO ACCURATE. CHILDE WOULD DO THIS WHEN HIS MUM GIFTS HIM A SWEATER FROM SNEZHNAYA ASDFGH. Kaeya: "Hello, my name is Failure, and you're watching my life crumble into pieces",*waves their finger and sings like they're in a Disney Channel intro*. As if my poor boy isn't already suffering 💀💀.
Duo Quotes:
Kaeya : "Do you know the ABCs of first aid?" Childe : "A. Bone. Coming out of the skin is very bad." Mfs probably saying this with a straight face too tbh.

Solo Quotes:
Kyoka Jiro ((耳じ郎ろう響きょう香か): "I regret getting dragged into your heterosexual tomfoolery." Bro even the quote generator knows Jirou ain't straight. Hanta Sero: "If the thought of something makes any of you giggle for longer than 15 seconds, you are to assume you’re not allowed to do it." Forever the tired dad of the group. Eijirou Kirishima (切きり島しま鋭えい児じ郎ろう): Does anyone know how to relax? Asking for a friend. Yep, literally every kid in Yuuei would say this no joke. Todoroki Touya (轟とどろき燈とう矢や): "Fruits that do not live up to their names; passionfruit, grapefruit, honeydew and dragonfruit." "Fruits that do live up to their names?" "Orange." Endeavour be like: they don't live up to their name like you, Touya.
Group Quote:
Hanta Sero: "Jiro, we're hungry!" Eijirou Kirishima: "Jiro! What's for dinner?" Todoroki Touya: "We're hungry, Jiro!" Kyoka Jiro, frying a bottle of ketchup over the stove: *screams* I would like to add that Touya says that from is hiding corner.

Lawliet?? (L): L: "All of your existences are confusing." The Squad: "How so?" L: "Your presence is annoying, but the thought of anything bad happening to any of you upsets me." Why is this so canon, I swear L said something like this, innit?
Yagami Light (夜神月): "My expectations are low, but they can always go lower." I agree, my brother.
Duo Quotes:
Light: "I’m in love with you." L: "We called off the prank war last night at midnight, dork." Light: "I know." L: "Ah. Okay. Um. Cool. Neat. Very cool. Cool. Cool. Coolcoolcool-" LMAAOAOAOAOAAAOAOAOA. I mean, it's like they say; Yagami reversed is 'I am gay'. Also, canon.

Attack On Titan:

Solo Quotes:
Armin Arlert: "If I'm extra sarcastic with you it probably means I'm flirting with you or you really annoy me and I can't handle your crap... have fun figuring out which one." This was most definitely targeted towards Eren. Eren Jaeger: "I'm not creepy." "I'm petty." "There's a difference, ya' know." Yeah guys, there's a difference. The difference is the beard. Mikasa Ackerman: "I would do anything for money." *later* covered in blood: "THE STATEMENT STILL STANDS!" Cap, she would do anything for Eren. Reiner Braun: "Now, the recipe calls for 2 shots of vodka", *upends the bottle*. 💀💀 Jean Kirstein: "Is this a good idea?" "Probably not." "Do I care?" "No." Jean when he realises he's actually in love with Jaeger and ha to against Mikasa.
Group Quotes:
Eren: "Ah, yes. Here we have a beautiful couple..." Mikasa: "I really care about your feelings!" Reiner: "I really care about YOUR feelings!" Eren, turning their head: "...and then there's the disaster couple..." Jean : "YOU NEED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO ME INSTEAD OF BEING AT THE HOSPITAL!" Armin: "I WOULDN'T HAVE TO SPEND SO MUCH TIME AT THE HOSPITAL IF YOU STOPPED INSISTING ON FIGHTING EVERYONE WHO COMES WITHIN A FIVE FOOT RADIUS OF YOU!" I'ma put in one more because these are funny. Mikasa: "Isn’t it weird that we can’t ride any other animal except horses. Like if horses weren’t a thing, humans would be fucked cause we couldn’t ride any other animals. Like riding animals wouldn’t really be a thing. We should probably be more grateful to horses. Reiner: Elephants. Mikasa: Blocked. Jean : Camels. Mikasa: Extra blocked. Armin: Donkeys. Mikasa: Ultra blocked. Eren: That dick. Mikasa: ...Followed. LMAOAOAOAOAOAOAAOAOAOAOA. But tbh... understandable. OKAY ONE MORE, THIS IS GREAT. Jean : So anyways have y'all seen Mikasa? Reiner: I think they went in Armin's room 'studying'. Eren: Doubt that. I heard groans there. *meanwhile in Armin's room* Mikasa & Armin, fighting: 💀💀

Maybe if we lean into it it'll work I mean it was supposed to think like that and we're telling them we're doing this so the ships are here and they're pushing it out a little is moving and it's like a sunset we're going to be right over the land and it's going to be awkward unless you push it out to see and there's a high pressure in the golf and it's caused by heat it's slowly cooling but it's the whole golf that's the way to let it happen or just wondering like if you do like a like a spot of cool or several spots if that would make a difference in incorrectly but so we tried that and it didn't do much so he let alone for a while and it's cooling and it's working it did work and it's down a few degrees and the pressures reducing a little and the river is coming down faster and ships are starting to come down and it's going on now so it's going to pressurize a little but it's down like 40 ft the max down is 50 or 60 really goes down to 80 and at the rate it's going it's going to be down to 80 by midnight even with all the rain and that's actually pretty good because everything will be compacted and the depressurization of the Hope peninsula that would take a little bit longer normal pressure would be about 40 and it's about 60 to 70 80 in places but it would take probably a month for it to go down and we don't have a month to wait so we're using it now and soon the flow will increase again and we'll have work to do in there and send down troops. The shore right now starting at the tip of Florida from the tip of Florida on the western coast goes all the way up to Leli resort and it dropped 50 ft. From Levi toestero it just dropped down to 40 ft and from estero to fort Myers it's down 30 it's another step each step is about 10 ft and yes like a vertical drop it's really strange, from fort Myers to North just north of Tampa it is about 20 ft we expect a 30 ft drop momentarily and we really need it there because it will affect down here if we don't have it probably within the hour
The storm we project to where it will land is just North of Tampa at the current trajectory I'm trying to change it and boys it's struggling. The temperature change in the Gulf is only less 3° from this morning and last night and we anticipate it will drop seven more degrees and that'll do it and it'll be by midnight and that is a large temperature differential between the storm and the water and should attract it with two with not too much effort right now it's a bear there will be a wind from the ships it's only temporary and a headwind and we'll have to fight that too but that's going to come down at 10:00 p.m. and be all of it will be by by 11:00 p.m. and it may push in a little and around estero and then we're going to push it out so it's a lot of work all day all night tirelessly fighting the sky Tommy f. They are grabbing more ships as we speak and they're gaining momentum elsewhere they're noting it's very sensitive complicated and difficult work but they're doing it and they're doing a good job. And the clones are resisting and it is a war
*seven large laser bases are on earth and are intact 13 are severely damaged
*10 small laser bases are damaged heavily and would take days to repair the very large bases would take days to repair 3 days minimum each at full speed unless they tore it all out and put a new one in and they don't have that not anymore
*20 large leaves in space plus 10 small lasers in space and they are not damaged and not breached and they are not under siege or attack in any way they're building up their defenses constantly
*the clones are building ships off planet on Titan and hoth and several moons and people see them doing it they're building about 350,000 ships an hour but they're all five mile class A Star blazers and yes meant for another blockade
*seven of the 10 large caverns are breached the other three are set upon and will be breached shortly due to the prior sevens equipment being used to breach them. Tons of people are taking everything they can and running Trump is pissed off at everyone and they're getting hit cuz they open their mouths a lot
*the situation in Florida is dire our son is under distress and duress he is in Jeopardy of being kidnapped by the United States military satanists they were putting that alert out and we are requesting our military to act now they cannot sit anymore they need to infiltrate them they need to halt them they need to fix the situation meaning the storm and everything else and I need generals in here now
Thor Freya
We really are doing the work but it's not getting done so I see what he's saying I'm going to go in there and see what he needs and get it done too
Nuada Arrianna
Did you see what he's saying this suck the Storm out with my pipes or anything that would probably do it and it'll be over but we'd hear about it forever so we got to come up with something to do I'm going to see what we're doing now he says big huge chips of ours right in their midst and it's cat and mouse game is not as difficult as people say I do understand that we will respect the rules though I will adhere to him is there for a reason but we do hear what you're saying
Duke Nukem Blockbuster I'm not hear you this is ridiculous is what you're saying that Amy right for where I am I can't stand it anymore the people responsible should be hit and they are but really we have to we have to choke up on that bat and I'm going to go ahead and do that that will CAA the last two sentences
We're going to go ahead and choke up in the back too I'm tired of hearing these people I'm trying to hearing the s*** trying their half-assed ways but they can't really help it but we have to do something I don't want to sit here and watch him just watch the damn thing come up to him it's like John rhema lord it's ridiculous that guy has to move out too this is disgusting it keeps getting pushed out of day everyday every single day the damn month I got pushed out
Thor Freya

Night Changes
This isn't based on an ask, but I've had some early-Cap ideas brewing and think about the first time the team heard him laugh a lot. His and James' friendship is so sweet in SW--the beginning of it must have been such a shock to them both. SW credit goes to @lumosinlove!
So maybe James had bitten off more than he could chew. It wasn’t the first time, to be sure, but coaxing (read: drag kicking and screaming) his new teammate out of the carefully-constructed mosaic of scowls that made up his entire personality was proving to be a little more challenging than he previously expected. With most rookies, all it took was some elbow grease and overenthusiastic inclusion in group events to get them to open up—with his brand-new soon-to-be best friend, he had to handle things a little more delicately.
Sirius Black was a puzzle wrapped up in one of those freaky code-breaking machines from World War Two Lily liked to talk about. He was one of the best hockey players James had ever seen, but off the ice he seemed to shut down. The intense focus on his face smoothed out into almost perfect neutrality, and in the four months since he joined the Lions, he had never once smiled for real in front of the team. He sat in his stall and padded up in silence, then went out and kicked ass before following Pascal home like a living shadow.
Naturally, James took it as a personal mission to pry Sirius Black’s closed-off persona open like a stubborn oyster. He tried including Sirius in group events—the rookie went along with a quiet “yeah, sure”, but sat at the table and nursed a single drink for the entire night. He tried getting into friendly banter with him on the ice, but it was like Sirius had never joked with anyone in his life. Hell, he even tried finding him a girlfriend, which tanked harder than the goddamn Titanic.
“Rookie!” James shouted down the hallway.
Sirius jumped and turned around, obviously confused. “Me?”
“Yes, you,” James laughed, jogging over to toss an arm over his shoulders. “What’s up?”
“Not much.”
He waited for Sirius to continue, then rolled his eyes and gave him a friendly shake. “C’mon, man, how was your weekend? Has Dumo coerced you into being a stay-at-home babysitter yet?”
Sirius’ frown deepened. “What? I come with him to practice every day.”
Change tactics, change tactics— “Got any plans for Friday?”
James knew the answer, of course; it was always no or not yet or a simple shake of the head. If he was a less observant man, he would have assumed Sirius didn’t actually want to hang out with the team. But the longing looks toward their easy rhythm and the way he always tilted himself toward locker room conversations told a different story. “None yet,” Sirius said with a shrug.
James gave him a friendly slap on the back. “Good, ‘cause I’m having a party at my place and you’re not allowed to miss it.”
“Why not?”
“Because I want you to be there, duh.” The bewilderment didn’t fade from Sirius’ face, but beneath it—well, maybe James was just seeing things, but he looked almost hopeful. He ruffled Sirius’ hair and headed for the locker room. “Friday at five, rookie! I’ll be waiting!”
--
The week passed in a slog of practices and cold weather. Sirius clammed up more and more as the party drew closer, but James didn’t miss the way his eyes flickered between the rest of them like he was analyzing a play. He would make one hell of a captain someday, if he could just relax a little.
“Hey, rookie, want a ride?” he asked when the big day finally arrived.
“Don’t you want to go home and set up first?” Sirius’ brow furrowed. For an eighteen-year-old kid, he was awfully thoughtful. James couldn’t wait to see him let loose a little. “I wouldn’t want to get in your way.”
“It’s a yes or no question,” he teased, poking the bit of exposed shoulder through the widening hole in Sirius’ under armor.
“I…” He faltered, then the corner of his mouth twitched up. It was the closest thing James had seen to a smile from him yet. One point for Potter. “Sure, Pots. Thanks.”
“No problem. Meet me at my car in five or so, yeah?”
“D’accord.”
“Oho, fancy French,” James laughed, turning back to unlace his skates.
It wasn’t until thirty seconds after Sirius left the room that he remembered he never told the rookie what his car looked like. Horrible, terrible visions of the poor guy wandering around the parking lot—or, god forbid, thinking James had left without him—flashed through his mind. It would undo everything he had been working so hard to build.
“Shit,” he hissed under his breath as he shoved his gear into his duffel with reckless abandon and hurried out of the locker room. His legs would be stiff from trying to run so soon after a grueling drill practice, but it was worth it to save his friend. “Rookie? Hey, Sirius, you still here?”
There was no response. James cursed again and made a beeline for the door to the parking lot. Please, God, don’t let him get lost. I need him to trust me.
“Oh, thank fuck,” he panted as he burst out onto the half-frozen concrete.
Sirius looked up from his phone with a strange expression. “Are you okay?”
“Thought I lost you for a sec.”
“You said to meet at your car, yes?” He glanced between James and the car in sudden worry.
“Yeah, yes, absolutely, I just—” He made an aborted gesture and dug his keys out of his pocket. “I realized I forgot to tell you which one is mine.”
Sirius blinked at him. “I know what your car looks like.”
“How?”
“Because you drive it here every single day and you gave me a ride three weeks ago.”
‘Dumbass’ went unsaid, but James could feel it hanging in the air. He coughed lightly. “Right. Anyway, you can toss your bag wherever and hop in the passenger seat. My place isn’t far from here.”
Sirius took his duffel as he unlocked the car and settled both in the trunk with more care than James’ poor, battered bag had ever seen in its life. That was another thing that confused him about Sirius Black—he was so careful. He walked quietly for someone so tall, and each movement seemed pre-planned.
Each movement, that is, until he tried to get in the car. “Uh, Pots?”
“That’s m—oh.” James covered his mouth to stifle his laughter as Sirius tried to fold himself into the passenger seat and failed miserably. “I’m sorry, my girlfriend was sitting there last. Uh, there’s a lever on your right—yeah, there, just give it a pull and—”
With a harsh ka-chunk, the seat slid all the way back. Both men froze. It took everything in James’ power not to burst out laughing at the deer-in-headlights shock on Sirius’ face.
“Yep, that one,” he managed. “Nice job.”
They drove in relative quiet—James chattered on about weekend plans and hummed to the radio while Sirius watched out the window with the occasional monosyllable response. It took James a bit by surprise how comfortable he was, even without a steady stream of banter. Sirius might have been stubborn and silent and determined to foil all James’ plans at getting him to socialize, but he was calming to be near, like an anchor on unsteady water. Despite his overall quiet air, he was obviously paying attention to every word that left James’ mouth.
“You’re a good guy, y’know that?” he said as they turned onto his street. Sirius glanced over in surprise. “Most people tune me out within, like, five minutes.”
“I’m a good listener.”
James opened his mouth to respond, then paused. “Was that—Sirius Black, was that a joke?”
Something akin to mischief—mischief!—crossed his face. “Maybe.”
“Were you roasting me?” James gaped at him. “Oh my god. The guys are never gonna believe this.”
“Probably not.”
“You sick bastard. They won’t believe me.”
“You can give it a shot,” Sirius said with a shrug as the engine turned off. Pieces began to connect in James’ head as he stared, incredulous, at the rookie he thought would never even crack a smile. Four months of work had not been wasted, as he had feared; every joke, every one-sided conversation, and every attempt to get Sirius involved had been seen and heard and taken to heart. When he thought about it, he wasn’t sure he had ever seen Sirius actively agree to something unless James asked personally.
“We’re friends,” he said aloud, too surprised and too happy to hold it in. Not friends in the way James was with the rest of their loud, over-the-top teammates, but friends all the same.
“Well, yeah,” Sirius said as if it was obvious.
James unbuckled his seatbelt and socked him lightly on the shoulder, barely suppressing a shriek of excitement. “Love you, man. Grab your shit, we’ve got a party to set up.”
----------------
As much as it pained James to say it, having someone around who was six-foot-three was a huge help. There was no blow to his pride as he dragged Lily’s stepstool out; no grudging acceptance that he simply couldn’t reach those last two inches on the wall. Instead, he could foist any and all responsibility on his brand-new best friend in the whole wide world and focus on the things that mattered, like putting anything breakable or important far away from the grubby hands of his inebriated teammates.
His success was still ringing in his ears when the guests finally arrived—throughout the evening, James rode the high of accomplishing his mission to pull Sirius Black into his tight-knit circle. Every minute of those four months was worth it.
Midnight came and went, and by one-thirty in the morning James’ cramped living room was packed with tipsy hockey players in a vague imitation of a circle. “Non, non, I’ve gotta good one,” Dumo said, hiccupping. The room fell quiet as he leaned forward. “What do you call a body of water with a chicken in it?”
“What?” Kasey whispered, starry-eyed like a kid at Christmas.
“A swimming pool.”
The room stayed quiet, and then someone started to laugh. Slowly, they all turned to the source of the noise, and James felt a ripple of shock roll through the team as Sirius snorted. “It’s a swimming pool,” he said around a smile, his accent thick from three drinks. He had a nice laugh; James could get used to hearing it. “Like—poule, like chicken?”
His whole face was alight with happiness. James wasn’t sure whether to cry or cheer. That’s what I’ve been waiting for, he thought. That look, right there. Sirius fit in among the group like a missing piece of their puzzle, snickering away as if he hadn’t been stoically silent a day in his life. His laugh was downright bubbly.
“I don’t think they get it,” Dumo said into the rim of his cup.
Sirius shook his head, trying to catch his breath. “D’accord, so—so ‘chicken’ in French is poule, yeah? So a chicken in a body of water is a swimming poule. Do you get it now?”
A few oh’s of understanding washed over them, but several people continued to stare. “Too drink for this,” Sergei grumbled, though James could see the smile pulling at his mouth as Sirius turned to him with bright eyes.
“But it’s funny!” Sirius protested, so earnest it made James’ heart hurt.
“I think it’s funny, rookie,” he assured him with a clumsy pat on the arm. “And it’s my house, so I say Dumo gets a point this round.”
Kasey hiccupped. “Hey, anyone who makes the rookie laugh gets points in my book. No offense, dude.”
“None taken,” Sirius said, though his cheeks were pink.
James nudged him with his shoulder as Talker started a knock-knock joke. “It’s okay,” he said under his breath.
Sirius picked at the label on his cup. “I know I haven’t been very social,” he muttered.
“It’s okay,” James insisted. “It always takes rookies a while to warm up, so we’re just glad you’re happy. I’m glad my best friend is having a good time at my party.”
A heavy silence fell between them as Sirius looked over, eyebrows raised. “Best friend?”
“What, like you didn’t see this coming?” James slung an arm over his shoulder. “Yes, you French-Canadian nerd, you’re my best friend. And that means I’m your best friend, and there’s no take-backsies.”
“What the hell is a take-backsie?” Sirius laughed. “Did you make that up?”
James grinned. He had the feeling this was the beginning of an excellent friendship.

Stitched Back Together
AO3
first Owl Fight attack, woo! The prompt for this one was “Luz and Raine hanging out”
Summary: Free of Kikimora's control, with scars carved into their skin, Raine is taken back to the Owl House. Awake in the middle of the night, unable to sleep after their whole ordeal, they officially meet Luz. Talking to one of Eda's kids really shouldn't be as intimidating as it feels.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
When Raine first saw the kids, truly and consciously, there were thorns retreating from their eyes and scars etched onto their skin as Eda held them tightly.
Eda’s sclera had turned black, hands hooked into talons with wings arched over their heads, and was at least two feet taller than when they had last seen her. And there had been a lot to ask about there, and possibly some gawking, but this isn’t about that.
Because as soon as Raine could stand, Eda holding their hands tightly and almost brought to tears at how relieved she was to see them alright, to know there would be no more harm done to them, Raine noticed the two figures far across from them, holding back the few guards trying to intervene.
They recognized them quickly, from the photo that had twisted a hole into their chest, because Eda had kids and she had spoken of them with such desperation and love--
The girl had turned, and Raine knew then they hadn’t been imagining the round ears when they first saw the photo. She had the young demon they recognized earlier clinging to her back, and they both looked at Raine with confusion. The demon’s had been accusatory, but the humans, she had to be a human, looked nothing but curious.
It had all passed by in a blur, the escape from the guards and Eda bundling them into the Owl House, frantic as she continued to check them over, never slowing in her talking as the wings and sharp edges retreated back into her body, which Raine may have quietly mourned the loss of. They suited her.
The human and demon had watched from the background, occasionally offering assistance towards or around the two, but more or less giving them space as Eda fretted and explained all she could to Raine, clinging like she was afraid if she didn’t, Raine would vanish again.
They heard of what Kikimora had done to them, of what Belos had done to them, of what they had done. Of Eda’s acceptance of the curse, of the rest of the BATs being in the Conformatorium (something they both agreed on fixing as soon as they could), of everything that Eda could think to catch them up on.
There would be time to unpack all of that, to formulate plans, to talk about everything beyond what Raine had missed out on. But that could wait until another day, could wait until Raine had gotten rest, and a moment to reorient themselves.
And yet, they still found themself in Eda’s kitchen, nearing midnight, with a cup of tea that looked suspiciously like the one Lilith had liked in their hands.
They knew they should be asleep, it was late, and knowing Eda, there would be far more to fret about in the morning. Eda had offered her nest, but Raine had taken the couch, not exactly willing to voice their opinion on how Eda’s nest did not look comfortable.
They were thankful for it later, too, when they awoke after barely an hour of sleep with the feeling of vines wrapped around their throat and muffled, begging cries as their hands moved of their own accord.
They sighed and slumped against the counter, setting down the cup for a moment to rub at their wrist, where scars from the reaching thorns still lay. They faded the further the scars stretched up their body, but they figured the ones along their wrist and arm would last for the rest of their life.
It wasn’t too bad, a scar was really the best thing they could’ve asked for. They stared down at their tea, thoughts swirling and not even bothering to try and sort any of them out. Later, when their wrist didn’t have a phantom ache.
“Oh, hey.”
Raine startled, almost knocking their cup over as they whirled their head around.
The human stood in the doorway, looking a bit surprised at Raine’s reaction. She had clearly just woken up, hair a frizzy mess and eyes still blinking with sleep.
“Oh, um, hello.” Raine said, forcing themself to relax. “Sorry, is there something you need?” They asked, wrapping a hand around their tea.
“I just came here for a snack,” The human shrugged, breezing right by the counter and towards the cabinets.
Raine nodded, mostly just to themself, and went back to staring into space, trying to pretend the awkward tension hadn’t suddenly arisen.
They realized after a moment that the girl had paused in what she was doing, hand still in the cabinet door, but taking nothing out. They looked up for a moment, and caught the girl watching them with a contemplative look on her face until she realized she had been staring and jerked back to shuffling through the cabinets.
“So,” Raine said, in some attempt to break the tension, leaning their arms across the counter. “You’re Eda’s kid?” They said, grimacing slightly at how off that had come off sounding.
“Er, yeah,” The human said, frowning at the cabinet before shutting it again and opening a different one. “And you’re...Raine.”
“You’ve heard of me, then?” Raine guessed, taking a sip of their tea.
“Vaguely,” The human admitted, opening another cabinet door. “I know you’re--er, were, the head of the Bard Coven. I know Eda mentioned some group called the BATs you lead. I know that...Eda knows you.” She said, voice becoming more mumbly as she spoke.
“Ah, Eda didn’t speak of me much, then?” Raine inquired, telling themself that they shouldn't really be surprised.
“Not until you, uh, had the whole...thing happening.” The girl nodded. “Then Eda got really worried and me and King asked why she was so worked up, and then she told us you were an old friend, which I maybe halfway trust, and that you had this group with the BATs...and I still don’t think I understand it completely.” She admitted with a sheepish look.
“Sounds like Eda.” Raine chuckled, shaking their head slightly as they smiled down at their tea. “Wait, halfway trust?” They added right after, back straightening.
“I mean, I trust you mean a lot to Eda,” The human said, her raiding of the cabinets forgotten. “And I trust Eda means a lot to you,” Raine did not flush at that, thank you. “But pretty much everyone Eda knows she has a very complicated relationship with, and I’d be surprised if you were the one exception.”
“Ah,” Raine said, rubbing the back of their neck. Is this what it felt like to be interrogated by a kid? “You got me there. We haven’t...seen each other in a while.” They admitted.
“How long?” The human asked, interest sparking in her eyes as she leaned next to the cabinets.
“Erm, two...maybe two and half decades?” Raine said, lifting a hand and tilting it. “Titan, it sounds much longer than it feels when I say it out loud.” They murmured.
“Oooh, another piece of the mysterious backstory!” The human grinned, perking up, all the hesitation from earlier melting away at a probably concerning speed. “Why’d ya stop talking?”
“Ah, well, you know,” Raine said, flushing again as their ears pressed back. “Just...a split, really. Seeing other people. Eda had some things she still needed to work out, and I suppose I had to reflect a bit, too.” They mumbled.
“Wait,” The girl narrowed her eyes, and when Raine focused on where she was again, they pulled back when they realized Luz was on the other side of the counter. “Are you one of her exes?” She gasped, eyes wide.
“Oh dear,” Raine sighed, face falling in their hands.
“You are!” The girl exclaimed, and they sincerely hoped it didn’t wake anyone else up. “Man, and I thought all her exes hated her from how she talked about some of them.” She whistled. “Explains a bit, though.”
“Is that so?” Raine mumbled, knowing that they were blushing up to their ears.
“Yeah, I mean, explains why she seemed so freaked out. She's gotta know you pretty well.” The human said casually. “She goes all out when she gets attached, as I’m sure you know.” She added with a light tease.
“Oh, I know.” Raine sighed, memories of holding back a feral Eda back in Hexside from mauling Odalia still vivid in their mind. “And, since we’re talking, I apologize, but,” They said, raising their head from their hands when they were sure they didn’t look like they’d had a nasty sunburn across their face. “I don’t believe I...caught your name.”
“Eda didn’t mention it?” The human blinked, graciously taking the change in conversation.
“She might’ve, but I’ll be honest, I caught maybe two of every five words she said.” Raine admitted, flicking an ear. “I’m sorry, but I figure I should ask now before it turns into something where I ask at a much worse moment.”
“Ah, don’t worry about it,” The human waved her hand. “You went through a lot. My name’s Luz.” She said cheerfully, offering a hand. “The other little guy is King.”
Raine blinked at it for a moment before reaching out and taking it, giving a single shake until Luz pulled back. She was practically rocking on her heels from how excited she seemed, and Raine may have allowed a small half-smile in return.
“Have you lived with Eda long?” Raine asked, because they could still remember Eda’s pained explanation that the kids weren’t hers hers, and found themself wondering where in the world she had picked up a human.
“Few months,” Luz said. “Four, maybe? I dunno, the calendars here are different from the human realm.”
“Four months?” Raine blinked, surprised. “I would’ve thought you’d known her longer.”
“Nah, I’m just a recent addition.” Luz shrugged, looking away with a hint of nervousness. “King’s been here for years, though.”
“Huh, odd.” Raine said with a shrug as they went back to drinking their tea. “You act a lot like her, I would’ve thought you’d have picked up those habits from her.”
“I do?” Luz repeated, straightening.
“Yes?” Raine lowered their cup. “When she was younger, at least. Very curious, couldn’t leave any questions unanswered. And stubborn. And maybe a little too attentive for her own good.” They added with a lighthearted tone.
“Oh, yeah, that-that sounds familiar.” Luz coughed into her fist, and Raine smiled at her embarrassment. “You knew her when you were younger, then?” She asked, and Raine chose not to comment on the slight diversion in conversation.
“Since Hexside,” Raine nodded. “I want to say we were eleven or so? Maybe twelve. Never had a moment of peace since.”
“Aw, Eda’s backstory just keeps getting more and more convoluted. At least yours isn’t as crazy as Lilith or her moms. Even after the whole mind-control thing.” Luz said with a fiery curiosity in her eyes, and Raine was impressed at their lack of visible reaction to how casually Luz brought up the mind-control. Another thing like Eda, Raine thought. No amount of answers would be satisfactory, and treated every odd thing like it was just another day.
“Well, I’m glad I got her daughter's approval. Wouldn’t want to fight my way in now, would I?” Raine chuckled, tilting their cup back and finishing the last of it.
When they lowered their cup again, Luz was staring at them like a spooked rabbit, hands gripping the counter. They blinked slowly, brow raised in confusion.
“I-I’m not,” Luz stuttered, coughing to clear her throat and forcibly releasing the counter. “I’m not her daughter, you thought I was her daughter?”
“You aren’t?” Raine frowned, ears perking up. “But you said you were her kid.”
“That’s--I thought you meant--like when Eda just casually calls me and and King kids, or when I’m out with my friends and she’s watching us we’re just ‘her kids,’ you know?” Luz said, looking a little frantic as she did so, wildly waving her hands around. “Not--no I’m not, related to her or anything--”
“Oh, I knew that.” Raine brushed it off. “But Eda told me you and King were her kids?”
“I--when did that happen?” Luz asked, near sounding like a demand.
Raine hesitated, for a brief moment. They doubted someone like Eda would so casually tell a teenager and young demon about that time she, you know, almost died, and it really wasn’t their place to tell them as such if she hadn’t.
“The last time we spoke.” They settled on. “Before the...thing.” They said, mimicking Luz’s words from earlier. “I learned she had kids, and I told her that if she had something to lose, she had to get back to them.”
“I...oh.” Luz said quietly, slowly relaxing and turning her head down to stare at the counter.
“I’m…” Raine hesitated. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to overstep, I didn’t know it was a touchy subject--”
“No, no! It’s not, you’re fine.” Luz waved them off. “I just...didn’t know Eda had said it like that.”
Raine would’ve thought something along the lines of ‘Eda didn’t tell you she thought of you as her kid?’ if they didn’t know that Eda was the same person who hadn’t even truly thought of them as dating until Raine had introduced her as their girlfriend with earshot. She’d been so touched over the whole ordeal that Raine had to remind her, repeatedly, that they had been dating for over a month. Apparently knowing, and having a title for it, were two very different things.
They wouldn’t be surprised if this kid was the same.
“She cares about you, you know that, right?” Raine asked softly, and Luz looked up to meet their eyes.
“Yeah,” She said, cracking a small smile. “I know.”
Raine nodded in satisfaction, stepping around the counter to set their cup in the sink. It was late, they could wash it in the morning. How Eda could've ever thought about leaving a kid like her, they don't think they'd want to know.
“She cares about you, too.”
Raine paused, going still as one hand lightly gripped the edge of the sink.
“I know,” They said, almost surprised that they believed it so easily, inhaling as they set their shoulders back. “It’s almost scary how little that seems to have changed.” They mumbled.
“For the both of you, huh?” Luz teased.
Raine whirled around, ears pressed back as their face lit up again, being greeted with the girl's smug face that she had to have picked up from Eda, it was almost uncanny.
“I--you--she just--there was--shouldn’t you be asleep at this hour?” Raine managed to strangle out, getting a gleeful giggle out of Luz as they did so.
“I got hungry,” Luz shrugged simply, her smug expression never falling.
“Then grab a snack and go to bed.” Raine huffed, crossing their arms, as if that would hide the embarrassment as they stepped aside.
“I will, once I find where Eda put the cookies. She keeps hiding them from King and doesn’t tell me where she put them.” Luz muttered, stepping up to the cabinets again and opening a new one.
“I think that means she’s hiding them from both of you.” Raine raised a brow.
“She should find better hiding spots, then.” Luz said, retracting a hand from the cabinet with a container full of cookies in her hand, shaking them. “Cover for me if she asks why some went missing?” She asked, a pleading look on her face.
“I’ll cover you if one goes missing.” Raine bargained, and Luz gave them a disgruntled look before sighing and taking a single cookie from the container.
“Can’t believe you.” Luz huffed good-naturedly, putting the cookies away.
“Just because you're Eda’s kid doesn’t mean I’m going to let you get away with everything, Titan knows how Eda would’ve ended up if that happened.” They muttered, shaking their head. “I fear the day you and Amber meet.”
“Who?” Luz tilted her head, taking a large bite of her cookie.
“One of my crew, she’s about your age.” Raine said simply. “I think you’ll get along. Now go, shoo, I’m willing to bet tomorrow will be quite hectic, and you need your sleep.” They said, herding Luz out of the kitchen.
“I’m going, I’m going!” Luz said, smiling as she lightly batted at Raine’s hands, darting out of the kitchen. “Remember, you saw nothing.” She warned, walking backwards as she narrowed her eyes on Raine.
“Lips are sealed, I was fast asleep the whole night.” Raine said, leaning against the doorway to the kitchen. “Though I figure she’ll find out, anyway.”
“Yeah, but I’ve got backup now.” Luz said, shoving the last half of the cookie in her mouth before slipping away through the doorway that led to the staircase.
Raine chuckled, shaking their head as they pushed themself off of the doorway. They should probably hit the couch again, too. Eda would only fret more if they were falling asleep all day tomorrow.
“Oh, almost forgot!” Luz said, head suddenly poking through the doorway and causing Raine to pause. “Welcome to the Owl House,” She said cheerily. “Since I take it you’ll be staying a while.”
Raine’s ears flicked back and they mumbled under their breath as Luz’s smile only widened, and Raine couldn’t help but mirror it.
“Night!” She chirped, vanishing around the corner yet again.
Raine watched the place where she’d vanished again, rubbing their wrist and noting it didn’t ache as much as before.
“Goodnight,” They said to the empty air.

Title: who we are in the aftermath
Fandom: The Owl House
Synopsis: Belos falls and the Golden Guard survives. It’s a new world and a new day, and sooner or later Hunter has to figure out where he fits in it.
Or: in which Hunter stays at the Owl House, becomes a (very, very reluctant) apprentice, continues to have accidental sibling shenanigans with the annoying human, and finally finds a place where he belongs. Probably.
AO3 link is here.
[Next chapter is here!]
.
chapter one: battling birds
They give him a room near the east side of the house, stuffed full of broken things and a miscellaneous number of random items. It’s not the human’s old room, and not Lilith’s, either—there’s too much dust and too much stuff for either option. Hunter can’t tell if he’s grateful for this or not. He’s still deciding on whether he’s grateful for the room at all.
There’s no time to set up a bed. He spends his first night here on a blanket, restless and half-awake and lying so still he’s half-convinced he’s shaking from the strain of not moving at all, not making a single sound. He can practically taste the dust on every inhale—does the Owl Lady ever clean, Titan help him—and by some godawful midnight hour Hunter gives up on sleep entirely and sits up, carefully, to whisper to his palisman.
Nothing important. None of the real questions that are swirling around in his head, like what am I even doing here and why am I still here and what am I supposed to do now, do you know? Instead he just says nonsense things, useless things, like “If I shine a flashlight in that little demon’s face do you think I could get him to chase the dot?”
The palisman coos and chirps and sings nonsense back. Red is a pretty color. I like tulips. If we iced over the Boiling Sea could we make human rain?
“None of those answers make sense,” Hunter tells it, and then writes a small note about the sea and rain connection on the dusty floor, if only because that’s actually kind of interesting and he wants to check it out again later.
Red tulips are tasty, replies the palisman, and nuzzles his fingers when he goes to pet it. Its feathers are soft and its eyes are luminous in the moonlight. Nonsense, all of it, but the nonsense helps—familiar as a friend, safe and easy. Better than thinking of Belos. Better than wondering what he’s doing here, sleeping on the floor in the Owl Lady’s house.
The human has left. He could walk out right now and she’d never know, not that her disappointment has any bearing on if he chooses to stay or go. She’s vanished back to the human world, probably gone forever. This house means nothing to Hunter—the Owl Lady is annoying and dislikes him about as much as Hunter dislikes her, and as endearing as the weird little demon is, that isn’t enough to make Hunter want to stay.
He could leave easily. He could go anywhere. He has nowhere to go.
“I don’t know what to do,” Hunter tells the palisman, at last, hours later. It is almost morning. The sunrise has only just begun, the peace of this dusty attic room wavering thin and fragile in the light of early dawn. It is a quiet admission. He says it very soft. “I don’t know if I know anything.”
I love you, says the palisman.
“That’s not an answer either.”
Oh, well.
Twenty minutes later, the Owl Lady’s weird bird-worm security creature bursts through the window and sings good morning loud enough to shatter eardrums. Hunter grabs his staff, throws a blast at the thing on instinct, teleports to the kitchen in a panic, and smacks the Owl Lady in the face with his palisman first thing in the morning.
.
The easy explanation is this: the castle falls and Belos dies and the Golden Guard somehow survives it all: portal collapse and half-realm merge and everything, which means when the dust settles, ultimately Hunter is left with absolutely no idea of what to do with himself.
“You should work with Eda!” says the human, in the aftermath. Given she says this in the ruin of what was once the Emperor’s castle, barely a half hour after—everything—Hunter feels pretty justified in his response. Which is to say he strangles his broken mechanical staff in his hands, takes a deep breath, and says in a very tight voice: “No.”
“But—!”
“No. No, no, no. I can’t even believe I did this, I don’t… it’s not happening. No.”
The human—he does actually know her name by now, after all they’ve been through, but also given all of This Nonsense she has lost name privileges—does not take that well. Of course she doesn’t. She’s so fourteen it makes Hunter want to die inside.
“Why not?” the human says, petulant. She has her hands on her hips and everything.
Hunter is kneeling in the rubble of a castle he’s called home for almost all his life. Somewhere down there is the throne where Belos used to sit; somewhere down there is a body. It’s not a surprise, really. It’s not a shock. From the moment the palisman fluttered into his life and Hunter let it stay, he always knew, deep down, that one day he was going to have to choose.
It does not make breathing any easier. “I don’t want to,” he says.
“You can learn wild magic! And, and glyphs! Eda knows a lot—”
“Does the Owl Lady know you’re offering up her house to an old enemy?”
“Eda won’t mind. Well, okay, maybe she’ll mind a little, but— she’ll let you stay if I ask her!” Yeah. The Owl Lady probably would. The human has that witch wrapped around her little finger; Hunter almost snorts. “Please, just hear me out. I’m sure we can—”
“No.”
“Hunter…”
“Don’t talk like we’re friends,” Hunter hisses. He drops the broken remains of the mechanical staff and stands, his hands curled to fists. “Don’t talk like you know me. You don’t know anything. You don’t—” He can’t breathe. He drops back to his knees in the rubble and rubs a hand over his eyes. “Just stop. Please.”
The human doesn’t say anything for a long time. On his shoulder, the palisman, thus far staying silent, flutters its wings and hops down to his knee, nudging his hand with its beak. It sings nothing. Just stays there.
After a moment, the human kneels next to him. There is blood on her face and dirt staining her leggings. “I know,” she says, and she suddenly sounds very tired. “I’m sorry.”
Hunter doesn’t say anything.
“I just—” the human starts, and then she stops. “I don’t know how else to help you.”
She looks small and weirdly sad, which makes no sense at all, because she hated Belos and never really understood why Hunter did not. (Hunter is not sure why either. If that is still something he can say. If you can betray your uncle and fight against your uncle and—and— and do these things, do everything Hunter has done, and still say that this feeling isn’t hatred.)
They aren’t friends, Hunter and the human. They have barely been allies. He doesn’t need her help, and she probably knows that as well as he does. But Hunter looks at her then, and despite the rubble and the ash and the blood on his tongue, for some reason instead of digging himself a makeshift grave he says—
“…Okay.”
Which still doesn’t really explain anything, but then, that’s just how it goes.
.
“Okay!” says the Owl Lady, smacking down her second cup of apple blood on the table. She does it too hard—a good splash of blood escapes the confines of the cup and adds yet another stain to her already-stained dining table. Hunter raises an eyebrow. The Owl Lady glares back. “House rules.”
There’s a red mark on her cheek, still, from where Hunter had hit her with his staff, and a stain all down her side from when, upon being hit with the staff, the Owl Lady spluttered and cursed and accidentally spilt the first cup of apple blood all over herself and the floor. She looks… barely awake.
“House rules,” Hunter echoes, dryly.
“Your scorn is noted and not appreciated.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” His palisman pecks his hand lightly. “Ow.”
“Luz, you owe me one,” mutters the Owl Lady, and takes a really deep drink of her apple blood. Hunter rubs at his hand, peeved, and eyes the palisman in case it gets any more hand-pecking ideas. The palisman blinks innocently back. Hmm.
“So. First of all.” The Owl Lady raises a finger. “Break any of my stuff and I end you.”
So just like the castle, then. Hunter sees where this is going. He settles gingerly back against the chair—why, why is all of her furniture stained—and rests his cheek against one fist, already bored. “Noted.”
The Owl Lady puts up a second finger. There’s a long silence.
“…Seriously?” says Hunter.
“Quiet, you.” She snaps her fingers. “Hah! Got one! Hurt King or Luz or Hooty or anyone I like in any way and I’ll destroy you. Yeah, that works.”
Hunter gets the sneaking suspicion these house rules are being made up on the spot, and are also only for him. He knows better than to say that aloud. “Fine.” Wait. “How am I supposed to know which random people you like or dislike?”
The Owl Lady grins. Her gold fang glints. “That sounds like a you problem, don’t you think?” She cackles a little. “Guess you’ll just have to find out! Or, you know. Maybe don’t attack anyone? That’s a start.”
Her owl palisman coos a little. Her nose wrinkles. “What? What do you mean that’s hypocritical? Stay out of this, Owlbert, I’m teaching life lessons or something.” Her eyes turn to him. “Anyway. You get the gist.”
Hunter’s hand is curled white-knuckled around his knee. His palisman flutters from the table to his shoulder, singing nonsense again. Red tulips, so tasty. Its feathers brush against his cheek.
He pries his grip off his knee one finger at a time. “…Understood.”
“Good.” The Owl Lady stands and stretches, yawning wide into one hand. “Anyway, I’ll give you a pass for this morning, because Hooty can be…” She trails off. Outside, muffled by the front door, the bird-worm creature shouts “HOOT” at full volume and then smacks into a tree.
“…a lot,” decides the Owl Lady. “But seriously, keep the windows locked. I don’t want you trying to blast him and burning my house down. I just got it back.”
Hunter says nothing. The Owl Lady squints at him and then picks her mug back up. “Riiiight… well, good talk, I guess. Get some more sleep, kid, you look worse than Luz after an all-nighter.” She waits. Hunter raises an eyebrow at her. “Ugh. I don’t know why I agreed to this.”
At least Hunter isn’t the only one second-guessing everything. Still, that reminds him. “The human.”
“Luz,” says the Owl Lady, unimpressed.
“Yeah, whatever.” He links his fingers. The palisman flies down from his shoulder to his cupped hands, and hops a determined circle in his palm for no apparent reason. Hunter watches it play. “…Is she coming back?”
“What, tired of our company already?”
“Yes,” Hunter says, because obviously.
“Rude. Well, can’t say the feeling isn’t mutual.” There’s a long silence. The Owl Lady sighs. “Luz… she promised she’d come back. You were there, weren’t you?”
Yeah, he had been. Standing in the back of the group, on the fringes of the goodbye. Two hours after the end, and the human had already roped the Owl Lady into letting Hunter live in her stupid owl house, and also somehow run around hugging pretty much everyone. And then she’d stepped through the mirrors that were all that remained of the realm-merge between her world and theirs, and not come back since.
She had, indeed, promised to return. But that was hours ago; that was yesterday. The mirrors are gone and no doors remain. And Hunter does not put much faith in promises.
“And when,” he asks the Owl Lady, a little lofty, a little snide. “When, exactly, do you think she’s coming back?”
The Owl Lady’s eyes narrow. Her lips press thin. For a moment he thinks she might snap at him, but then her shoulders slump, and in the end she just looks away.
“I don’t know,” the Owl Lady admits.
Useless, Hunter thinks. But he doesn’t say it. Just nods and turns away to head back upstairs and make that stupid dusty storage room somewhat presentable, because if he’s going to be staying here for—for—for whatever amount of time he ends up staying here, he’s going to breathe actual air instead of dust, thanks.
“Remember, kid! House rules!”
“Yeah, yeah,” Hunter says, and teleports back up the stairs without a single glance back.
.
Hunter manages to shove all the junk into one corner and make the start of a fairly presentable bed in the other corner by the time the human re-arrives in the Boiling Isles and throws open his door hard enough to smack it against the wall.
“You took my advice!” shouts the human, at the top of her lungs.
“Hiiiiii,” says Hunter, hands over his ears. The human takes a deep breath. Hunter closes the door in her face. “Byeeee.”
“Hey!”
“Why are you yelling.”
“I can’t believe you’re here!”
It’s just nonsensical enough to get him to open the door. Why does this always happen to him? Why is the human like this? “You said I should come here! You said—”
“Psh,” says the human and flaps a hand in his face. Hunter stops mid-word, gritting his teeth, practically feeling his whole face turn bright red with rage. “I didn’t mean it in a bad way! I just— I didn’t think you would actually listen! But you’re here!” She’s beaming. Hunter looks away. Her smile fades. “…Are you okay?”
He can’t sleep. His eyes are hot and burning like he wants to cry and he has no idea why. His uncle is dead.
“No,” he tells her. “No one in this house dusts. I’ve forgotten what air tastes like.”
“Psh-haw! I’m sure it's not that…” The human steps inside, inhales, and chokes. “Oh. Ay Dios mío. Wow, this room has not been dusted.”
“I noticed!”
“Oh, man.” She hides her nose in her elbow and sidles outside again. She’s wearing her weird human clothes and her palisman staff strapped to her back. She looks tired, and a little like she has no idea what she’s doing here either. She lingers in the door almost awkwardly, rolling back and forth from her heels to her toes.
Hunter watches her for a long moment. “You came back.”
“Haha. What gave it away?” But the smile she gives is small and blinding, brighter than the sun. “Watch this.”
“Watch wha—” The human lifts her hand and trails it through the air, dragging her fingers down in a straight line. Golden light follows her fingers. It breaks the air like a fractured mirror, a rift sparking to life in the hallway, the dark greens and blues of a galaxy intertwined with a burning glow. Hunter’s voice dies in his throat.
“If I push at it, it opens. Like a door. It leads me right home.” She’s smiling so wide it must hurt. The portal almost seems to whisper; the golden glow of the rift shines in her eyes and catches on her face, still tear-streaked. The human’s cried over this. She’s right to. The human world and the Boiling Isles—she has found a way to keep both.
Presumably he thinks he should be jealous. Instead he finds himself smiling too. “I’m glad,” Hunter tells her. “That’s… pretty cool.”
“Right!?” She bounces on her heels and waves a hand through the rift, dismissing it into nothing. “I can’t wait to show Amity. And Eda. And King. And you! The human world is—it’s amazing. The rain doesn’t kill you even a little bit!”
It takes sudden effort to keep up the smile. “…I’ve heard.”
“Anyway, I just came by to say hi. Eda said you were here, and—” She stops, visibly hesitating. Her head lowers. “I know… I know this must be hard. And that we aren’t really friends. But… if you need anyone to talk to… I’m here.” She peeks up her head a little, grinning. “After all, we’re house buddies now!”
“Human,” Hunter says. Her nose wrinkles. He sighs. “Luz.”
“Yeah?”
There’s so much he could say that for a moment he has no idea where to start. Why did you think this was a good idea. Please stop talking. Why are you so insistent that we could be friends. I didn’t say I was staying here for long. I’m very tired. You’re bizarrely forgiving. My uncle is dead because of you.
“…Thanks,” he says. “And— I’m sorry.”
Luz blinks at him. Then she grins. “Noooo problem, ol’ buddy ol’ pal!”
Hunter shoves her stupid smiling face away and closes the door on her toes. Luz yelps and swears and kicks at the door, and yells rude things in that other human language of hers. “Byeeeee,” Hunter says, and behind the closed door, Luz makes a muffled noise of rage and shouts, “Would you stop saying that!?”
And it doesn’t make things better but it doesn’t make things any worse, either, and when Hunter turns away he is almost smiling—so maybe it’s okay.
.
The sun sets. The dusty room has been aired out to its best ability, and Hunter has made a somewhat functional and comfy-looking bed in the corner. A sticky note with the boiling sea + ice = human rain idea has been ceremoniously pinned to the empty wall space. In addition to the sticky notes, Luz has donated his “sad, bad boy room” what looks to be a dying houseplant. Hunter suspects she gave it to him purely because she has despaired of trying to keep it alive herself.
He puts the plant on the windowsill. The palisman apparently loves it. Maybe he should find red tulips for it to eat. Whatever a red tulip is.
He settles next to the palisman on the windowsill, and strokes its head with his finger. He feels strangled and small and the sunset looks alien to him. Everything has changed. Everything is over. He is a powerless witch with a wild magic staff, and he will never be the Golden Guard again.
His eyes burn. He blinks fast. Far down below, he can hear the Owl Lady and Luz arguing over dinner.
“I still don’t know what I’m doing here,” Hunter tells the palisman. The sunset makes all the trees look shadow-like and sharp, outlined in red. It reminds him of his palisman, a little bit. “I don’t even like these people. What do you think? Is it too late to head back and dig myself a grave in the rubble?”
I’m happy I know you, chirps the palisman. It hops from the dying houseplant to the top of his head.  I love you, I love you.
His throat feels tight. “…That still isn’t a real answer.”
I want apple blood for breakfast tomorrow. The palisman nibbles at his hair. It looks tasty.
He’s quiet for a long moment. Then he closes his eyes. “Okay. If— if you say so.”
The sun is setting, and the light is warm on his face. The Boiling Isles feels, for once, almost something like peaceful. It probably won’t last.
“We’ll stay.”

talking about toh | season two, episode eight: "knock knock knockin' on hooty's door"
holy shit
sorry this was a few days late, i was equal parts busy and lazy.
previous | first | next spoilers under the cut, as always
the beginning
awww hooty’s writing to lilith! like he promised!
btw, just so you guys know, i’ll be referring to hooty with he/they pronouns, because it makes sense to me. also i use he/they and i’m a hooty stan so it works.
I realize now that i spelled “hootsifer” wrong in my url. oh well, i like “hootcifer” better anyway. (also the url “hootsifer” is taken anyway)
oh no, hooty feels unimportant! i’m sure the large majority of the fandom is okay with this, but i’m not! poor thing.
i found it adorable that luz wants to find a way into amity's heart (even though she's had a place there since grom). how she would use the echo mouse for that, i don't know.
luz saying "we have to go" was almost a direct parallel to amity saying "I GOTTA GO" in "wing it like witches".
king's plot
i love how king is going through his angsty teen phase. that's hilarious.
why the fuck does hooty just eat people?! and then just act like that's an okay thing to do?!
i think it's a fun detail that hooty is wearing king's teacher hat from "the intruder". i love little things like that.
i like how this episode gave us some lore as to how demons on the isles work. they emerged from the muck of a decomposing titan? that's dope! it's also cool how there's three main types of demons.
hooty is a worm?!
on the board with all the bug demons, i recognized the butterfly alador kept chasing in "escaping expulsion", as well as adagast from "witches before wizards", the bear trap demon from "the intruder", and the kindergarten teacher from "i was a teenage abomination".
it was neat to see the fairy from "a lying witch and a warden" and the butterfly... thing from "witches before wizards". more neat continuity stuff!
what did king say with his dance? i'm very curious.
maybe king didn't want to talk about the cocoon, but i certainly do! what the hell happened?!
because of some of the images in the background when hooty was talking about demons, we can infer that some students of hexside are demons and not witches. i wonder if witches are more powerful than demons, or if they're on the same level.
other biped demons i recognize are the bounty hunter, tibbles, one of the pirates, warden wrath, and braxus.
i also saw a cat-person. are catgirls and catboys a thing on the isles?
i like how tiny nose and hooty are friends. somehow, it makes sense.
was tiny nose playing on a nintendo switch? that's cool.
we got to see even more past demons from the section about beasts, such as the ratworms, the echo mouse, the trash slug, the selikdomus, the slitherbeast, and the snaggleback.
has tiny nose's voice changed, or is that just me?
i'm really curious as to what the heck king is. is he a unique kind of demon? a hybrid, maybe?
i thought it was sweet that hooty and tiny nose tried to celebrate king for who he is, even though it just made him sad. they're trying.
eda's plot
hooty had a good point in wanting eda to sleep. sleep is important! says the guy who regularly stays up until at least midnight.
i completely understand hooty's fear of the owl beast. remember what happened last time?
the cookies hooty made were very cute. i loved that.
hey, the sleeping nettles are back! the same thing luz and hunter used a few episodes back to put kikimora's steed to sleep.
we got to see eda's dad! we know very little about him, but we did see him. also, did he look like nigel thornberry to anyone else? no? just me? okay then.
it broke my heart seeing raine and eda breaking up. it was neat that we got confirmation that they were together!
eda clearly regrets pushing raine away. poor thing.
who is the cloaked figure? i've seen a lot of theories that it's amity, but that makes no sense. i don't think she was even alive at this point. it could be odalia, though. that would be a cool twist.
the little owl beast was so cute. i want a plush of that.
HARPY EDA! holy shit, she's so cool. top tier character design.
luz (and amity)'s plot
you better bet your ass i have a lot to say about this! plot! okay, let's start from the beginning.
i was really hoping we would get some mutual pining lumity this season, and by god did it deliver! luz referring to her as a "cotton-candy-haired goddess" was too cute.
from what she said, it sounds like this isn't the first time luz has tried to ask someone out. she's so afraid of getting rejected. wait a minute, amity was afraid of getting rejected too! that's a parallel i didn't even realize!
i wasn't expecting to see amity this episode! it looks like her parents let her keep her purple hair. that, or the twins are using illusions to hide her hair from their parents.
i love how hooty's solution to getting amity to the owl house is to straight-up eat her. that's one way to do things.
i really want to know more about house demons. are there more than one? are they all bird-like? are they born as houses or do they just inhabit houses? so many questions and not enough lore!
the way luz interrupted amity when she suggested "forgetting" about what happened in front of blight manor reminded me of how eda kept interrupting king last episode when she thought he was going to tell her he was planning on leaving.
i'm not gonna lie, i skipped through the majority of the tunnel of love scene. that kind of thing gives me second-hand embarrassment like you wouldn't believe.
my heart shattered into pieces when amity said that the idea of her adting luz was stupid. she obviously doesn't believe it, but she's probably been trying to convince herself of it.
this part had me terrified that the lumity plot for the episode would end there. thank goodness it didn't, eh?
the ending
AAAAAAAAAAAA
okay, okay, let's start from when hooty freaks out for a third time, after the tunnel of love.
i thought it was funny how hooty ripped himself out of the door in order to run (?) away. at least we didn't have to hear all the sounds this time.
wait, "things always get weird when hooty's upset"? has this kind of thing happened before?
gosh, the part where king's voice powers saved luz and amity was so cool. i saw somewhere that the animator wanted to reflect the lesbian and bi flags and they did a great job.
eda encouraging luz to ask amity out was so cute. we stan a supportive mom, always.
and then comes the scene everyone's been talking about. oh my gosh, this was done so beautifully! it was equally awkward and cute, the way it should have been, and the fact that they both asked each other was perfect!
LOOK AT HOW HAPPY AMITY IS WHEN SHE SAYS YES!!! this is the happiest we have ever seen her, and it's adorable.
Tumblr media
something i really love about this scene is the fact that they didn't say "i love you" or even kiss, like what seems to happen in a lot of confession scenes. they just held hands. it was probably one of the most realistic confession scenes i've ever seen. it kind of reminded me of when my gf and i got together.
oh yeah, that's right! they're officially together!!!!!!! FINALLY!!! i was not expecting anything that happened in this episode, but out of everything this one was the most surprising. holy SHIT! we have a canonically sapphic couple! in a disney cartoon! a disney cartoon!
honestly, i hope everyone has gained more respect for hooty after this. they've helped further the plot more in one episode than anyone else has done throughout the rest of the show.
we got to see king's dad properly for the first time! i don't think we'll see him in "eclipse lake", but maybe we will in the episode after that? i hope so.
everyone's freaking out about hooty eating the letter but... can't they just... throw it back up? like they did at the beginning of "really small problems"?
predictions
to my knowledge, the next episode is going to be about amity looking for an ingredient for the new portal. i also know that eda, king, and hunter will be there too. i don't know what to expect, but i am very excited. until next time!

A Late Flight

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jean is tired. The work trip sucked, in addition to sucking every last bit of energy out of him. It also sucks that it’s a Saturday, he’s on an evening flight which won’t get in until after midnight, and now his weekend is gone, too.
He buckles into his seat, feeling wholly beaten down by his horrible job, the frigid air in the plane, being squished into a too-small seat with no leg room, and, to top it all off, he can’t seem to keep thoughts of Eren out of his beleaguered mind.
Maybe because he remembers, all too clearly, sending Eren an itinerary of this very trip, way back when he had booked it, ages go. He had been so excited to ask if Eren wanted to come with him, spend a few nights in the city together. Eren hadn’t been able to go, which Jean had been disappointed about at the time; but that, of course, certainly worked out for the best in the end.
He sighs. It’s been months already, and he should be well over Eren, but he’s not.  He misses him so much, it’s like a physical ache, like a literal hole in his heart. At the same time, he’s so freaking angry at him, too, the stubborn motherfucker.
Almost as angry as he is at himself, for starting the argument in the first place.
He had been grumbling about his job, ranting about it, really. Eren, naturally fed up by this tirade, had finally said, “Then get a new one! You don’t have to spend the rest of your life as a corporate tool!”
It was a perfectly reasonable response. Jean has no idea, now, sitting on this cold, dark, plane, an empty apartment waiting for him back home, what had possessed him to bite back with such venom.  Probably simply because Eren had been there, and Jean’s such a shitty person that he couldn’t resist letting fly at the easy target in front of him.
“Oh,” he had said, his voice dripping with condescension, “I should do what you’re doing? Saving the world one fish at a time?”
Jean had been staring right at Eren, chin out and eyes narrowed, and so he had seen all too clearly the look of deep hurt flash across Eren’s face, before it had tightened in anger and he had spit out, “I’d rather be saving a fish than pillaging the planet and screwing the disenfranchised.”
Even though it was an old argument between them, it was not usually phrased so baldly, and Jean had immediately lashed out, the words pouring out of him like a waterfall of toxic waste.
“If you think you’re actually doing something, actually saving even one fish, you are more delusional than I ever thought you were, and that’s saying a lot.” Even while he was saying the words, Jean had been appalled.  They in no way represented his actual feelings on the matter. If anything, he was incredibly impressed with Eren, how he had managed to establish a working career as an environmentalist.  He was good at what he did, good enough that people paid him decently to do it, at the same time working his ass off to make the world a better place.
Eren had sprung to his feet, his face so thunderous that Jean had braced himself for a left hook. It was a familiar dance for both of them, using their fists – it had been their primary means of communication throughout college. That was in the past, though. They had both mellowed considerably in their twenties, at least towards one another, and by this point had been together, practically living in one another’s spaces, for more than a year.
Instead of hitting Jean, however, Eren had blinked twice and then his face had smoothed over into a frighteningly blank mask before he had said, in a robotic monotone, “Goodbye, Kirstein.”
Jean could only watch, stunned, as he had methodically gathered up the work he had spread out on the table, then gone into Jean’s bedroom to retrieve the few books he stashed there, then to the kitchen for his favorite mug, and finally to the bathroom to collect his toothbrush.
He had not looked at Jean again.
Jean had had a terrible, sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that he had fucked up for real this time.
And it was true. He had. Because after that, there was nothing: no texts, no calls, no emails, and definitely no visits. Not even any angry ones.
             Eren was gone for good.
Even when Jean had eventually woken up and tried to contact him, fully ready to apologize (which he planned to do, right after telling Eren off for being his usual annoyingly self-righteous dickish self),there had been no response. The only email Eren answered had been the one asking what Jean wanted him to do with the few articles of clothing he had left at Jean’s apartment. All Eren had said was to leave them outside his door the following Thursday, and he would pick them up.
He had done so while Jean was at work, leaving nothing behind.
And as much as Jean told himself that he was well rid of the kind of jerk who couldn’t even do him the courtesy of giving him a chance to apologize, he knew it was a lie. He missed Eren like crazy, and the whole damn thing had been entirely his fault.
-----------------------------------------------------
Armin had called a few weeks later.
He had said, with his usual eager enthusiasm, “We’re going to surprise Eren by taking him out on Friday. Does that work for you?”
Jean had had to swallow the lump in his throat – apparently, Armin didn’t know.
All he had said was a terse “No,” and had been about to hang up the phone, when Armin had offered up a different date, and then another (“Eren will really want you to be there, Jean,”), until Jean had had enough. He had hissed into the phone, “We’re not together anymore.”
“Oh,” had been Armin’s surprised response. “That explains a lot.”
“What the hell does that mean?” Jean had asked, voice rising in self-righteous indignation.
“He’s been looking like one of the Walking Dead. That’s why we wanted to get him out, actually.”
And if that hadn’t stabbed Jean through the gut, he didn’t know what would.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jean shifts in the airplane seat, vainly trying to find a more comfortable position. Once more, Eren’s terrible, hurt face swims up in his mind, and he wants, more than anything in the world, with a hopeless, crazy passion, to be able to go back in time, to stop himself from showering vitriol on the person he had loved most in the world.
Still does, if he’s being honest with himself.
But he also knows Eren, and once Eren has decided something, especially about people, that’s it; there’s no going back.
Jean, unfortunately, isn’t able to sleep on the flight. By the time he arrives, he is cramped, cold, and utterly exhausted.
The airport is surprisingly busy at this late hour, and Jean shuffles his way through the disembarking horde, moving one foot steadily in front of the other.
Just one more leg of this journey, and then at least he’ll be home and able to crash in his own bed.
He stuffs aside the unhappy thought that Eren won’t be waiting for him – why can’t he just let it go? Eren’s gone. Gone and never coming back, you dipshit, he admonishes himself. There are some mistakes that simply can’t be fixed, and this is one of them.
Once off the plane, he runs a tired hand across his face, shifts his bags more securely on his shoulder, and starts the long trek out.
By the time he makes it past the security checkpoint, he’s picked up the pace, eager to get home, moving at such a rapid clip that he almost bumps into the figure looking up at the giant screen listing all arrivals and departures.
It’s someone with a familiar shade of brown hair, and a familiar build, and when he turns, it’s a familiar face, too.
Jean stops in his tracks, feeling like he’s unknowingly gone into hyperspace and ended up at an entirely different location than he had planned. He looks around, bewildered, but – yes, he’s still at the airport, and, yes, it’s still the middle of the night.
Which doesn’t answer the question of what the hell Eren is doing here, right now, at the very moment Jean is exiting from his own flight?
And he wishes his heart would stop hammering with excitement because, he reminds it, he’s angry at the jerk who’s standing in front of him - blocking his way, even, like the annoying prick he is.
“What are you doing here?” he growls.
Eren doesn’t answer, just looks at Jean warily, like Jean is a rabid wolf and he’s gotten a little too close for comfort.
And then it hits Jean. Eren is here to see him! He was looking up Jean’s flight on the board! He came to find Jean!
Nothing on Eren’s face indicates that to be the case, but Jean knows it’s true. Eren’s here to see him, and that means… that means, crazily, unbelievably, he still has a chance.
And he’s not going to fuck it up this time.
With a hoarse cry, he drops his bags, steps forward, and throws his arms around Eren. He swallows down the lump in his throat, takes a deep breath in, and – it’s a waterfall again, but this time he hopes it’s the right one.
“I didn’t mean any of that shit I said. I was angry at myself, and I never should have taken it out on you, and I love you so much and I miss you, and please will you give me another chance,” he babbles like a raving lunatic, clutching onto Eren like he’s the last mast on a sinking ship.
And then Eren’s arms are around him too, and he’s hugging Jean, tight enough that it’s borderline uncomfortable, Jean squeezing back, until they’re both having trouble taking a full breath in.
And when Jean lets go, Eren grabs hold of his face and kisses him, hard, right on the mouth.
Then he reaches down to take Jean’s bags, hoists them up onto his back, and says, “Want a ride?”
Jean knows his smile is wobbly, but he can’t seem to firm it up, not with Eren looking directly at him with those eyes of his.
“Only if you’re coming home with me,” he manages to say, his voice rough, but the words are perfectly clear.
Eren’s face relaxes into a smile, his lovely, sweet, real smile, and he nods once, firmly, as he reaches out to take Jean’s hand in his.

Fight for Us
Chapter ii- A Field
Tumblr media
summary- after getting a rather ominous statement from reiner, you figure out exactly what it means.
warnings- major triggers- attempted suicide, guilt, mentions of figurative violence, dark thoughts. read with caution if you are sensitive to those issues.
a/n- this chapter was definitely a hard one to write, but i mean i don’t think it came out terrible? i promise all this angst is temporary and i’ll make it get fluffier :(
Tumblr media
Reiner and you sat on the curb of the street, looking up into the midnight sky that hung over the two of you. The moon was at half tonight, and you could see the craters on it even though it was millions of miles away.
A cool breeze came along through the air, sending a shiver down your spine. Reiner could see you shaking out of the corner of his golden eyes, shimmering bright in the pale moonlight.
“You’re cold, aren’t you?” He asked. “You should get home before you catch a cold.”
“I-is that okay?” You ask, body trembling in a weak attempt to stay warm. “I don’t w-wanna leave you here.”
Reiner chuckled. “Don’t worry about me. We’ll catch up in the morning if that’s okay with you.”
You nod, and get yourself up off of the cold pavement. Reiner stays there looking up at the moon, a content expression on his face.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Reiner”, you say, and wave. Turning the opposite direction, you head home to go to sleep for the night.
Before you head too far off, Reiner clears his throat loud enough to make you hear him and turn your attention back to him, a puzzled expression on your face.
“Y/n?” He asks, still not turning away from you.
“What?”
“...I’m sorry.”
You arch a brow at this, not knowing exactly what he meant by this. “You don’t need to be sorry for anything. What are you apologizing to me for, anyway?”
Reiner sighed, one that was barely audible. “You’ll know in the morning.”
———
After heading home confused and partly concerned, you tucked yourself into bed after reading a part of a romance novel you borrowed off your parents bookshelf.
At one point, the two main lovers in the story were frolicking in a field after running away from their disapproving parents. When trying to visualize this, you swore you might have accidentally saw you and Reiner instead of those two lovers.
If only the world was as complicated as that field of flowers.
When you woke up the next morning, it took you a moment to remember your conversation that you and Reiner had last night. His last words before you
left echoed through your head.
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, what could that mean? You ask yourself, pondering on this question while slipping out of your nightgown and into your normal day clothes. You shrugged off the question for now, it couldn’t mean anything too deep.
Today you had plans to go into town just for the hell of it. Perhaps a nice shopping day in downtown Marley would be nice, maybe stopping for some coffee or tea afterwards. And of course, you had to pop into the warriors dorms to say hello to Reiner again. He did say he wanted to finish catching up with you.
After getting the rest of your clothing on, you headed out the door to the busy streets of Marley, already crowded with people and merchants. It was like everyone in this country had collectively decided to come out and buy groceries this very hour.
The walk to the headquarters wasn’t long, perhaps fifteen minutes or so from your apartment. Once you got there, you saw two men with blonde hair and a woman with black hair that was rather messy. You could recognize them easily, since they still flaunted some of the features they had when they were children. One was Porco Galliard, another Zeke Yeager, the woman was Pieck Finger.
The first one to notice your presence from across the cobblestone street was Porco. His head instantly turned, and a wide smile formed on his lips.
“Hey, y/n!” He shouted, throwing a hand up in the air and waving it.
You smile, and cross the street to meet the other warriors. Eventually Zeke notices you after lighting a cigarette, followed by Pieck.
“How are you?” Pieck asks, wrapping you in a warm hug. Her demeanor was always soft and comforting, making you feel safe every time you were around her. “You got tall, it feels like the last time I saw you, you were only this high!” She gestures her hand to somewhere around her chest.
“Yeah”, you giggle. “Puberty does wonders I guess. I heard about your victory in Fort Slava, that was pretty cool if I do say so myself.”
“It was, but it was a little terrifying to see a canon being pointed at me every five minutes. But nonetheless it was still cool.” Porco chuckled, and you saw the faintest shade of pink spread across his cheeks. He reached a hand to smooth back his blonde hair, even though he must’ve had a gallon of hair gel on him.
“So um, have you seen Reiner?” You asked them. Porcos face instantly dropped upon hearing his name. “I figured he would be here, since the whole titan shifter thing.”
“He uh, hasn’t showed up to the meeting this morning”, Zeke added, breathing out a puff of grey smoke. You coughed as your nose picked up the scent of ash. “You could probably find him in the dormitories.”
“Thank you Zeke”, you say. “I’d better go find him. He said we would catch up today since we didn’t have the time yesterday. I’ll see you guys later!”
You wave goodbye to them, Zeke and Pieck waving back while Porco just stood there.
Porco didn’t want to admit it, but hearing Reiners name come out of your mouth like that made his blood boil. He saw yesterday the way your eyes lit up when you looked at him, how you hugged him so tightly. And the worst part was that you liked to hang around that asshole, the one who had the chance to make things better, but didn’t. He swore he could do better than him in every way possible.
You walked down the halls to where all the dorms were, all the doors open except one. You assumed Reiner was probably in the occupied room, so you made your way down the hall to that closed door.
Your footsteps echoed in the near empty hallway, boots clacking on the polished floor. Once you came to the door, you gulped down your nervousness and placed three knocks on the wooden door.
There was no reply. You waited patiently for another thirty seconds or so, but soon grew impatient and decided to just open the door.
“Reiner, I was wondering where you wer-“
Your breath was practically stolen from you because of the sight laid out in front of you. Reiner sat on his desk chair, a locked and loaded rifle sitting in his throat. His eyes were dull, hair a mess and skin pale.
You were frozen. You couldn’t comprehend why that rifle was in his mouth. He was always so lively, what the hell was he doing?
Then it clicked.
“...I’m sorry. You’ll understand in the morning.”
He was going to shoot himself.
You ran to his side, trying to hold back an outburst of tears from streaming down your cheeks, you could feel them building up in your eyes. Reiner swiftly pulled out the rifle, a gob of spit coating the head. He let out a few strained coughs, letting you know exactly how deep that rifle was inside his mouth.
“Reiner, what the hell are you doing?” You ask, voice cracking. “Don’t tell me...”
“It’s what it looks like y/n, i know. I just don’t- I can’t- fuck, this is hard to explain...”
Before he could let out another word, you found your arms enveloping his cold body, wrapping around both of his broad shoulders and around his upper back.
“Don’t say anything”, you whisper in his ear. “Just... just sit with me.”
Reiner could feel his tears start to come up too, clumping up at his lashline and threatening to come down.
“I’m s-sorry I’m useless”, he hiccuped. “I-I’m so tired...”
His grip tightened around your back, and he soon found himself clinging to you, the tears rolling down his puffy cheeks. He sniffled, and let out a broken sob. His tears began to soak through your shirt, creating a temporarily stained spot on your shirt. But that was the least of your concern right now.
“You’re- you’re not useless, Reiner”, you say. “You’re everything that this country needs.”
“I’m just holding them back, y-y/n...” he said, almost whispering in a voice you’ve never heard come out from him. “I’m the reason t-that we lost Bertholdt and the others. I would be better with my brains blown out right now.”
You slightly gasp at his statement, but don’t dare to pull away in the state he’s in right now. “Don’t you say that ever again, Reiner. You were chosen for a reason-“
Reiner pulled away from you, tears still rolling down his cheeks. “R-remember what I told you last night? Marcel swayed the decisions to protect Porco. It wasn’t supposed to be me. It shouldn’t have been me, ever.”
“Look at me”, you say, taking ahold of his face, holding his head between your two palms. “You’ve done everything you could- in fact, you’ve done more than I ever could! You’re brilliant, Reiner, you hear me?”
Reiner was trembling at this point, shaking like a nervous puppy at the vet. His eyes were wide with panic, fat tears rolling down his cheeks. You didn’t know what else to say.
Your mind wanders to a darker place for a moment, if you had shown up a minute too late to see his cold body on the floor. What would you have done? How would you have forgiven yourself? You were going to pray tonight for getting the chance to talk him out of it.
His eyes clenched shut, and he buried his head in your shoulder. You could physically feel your heart shatter for Reiner, being in a condition like this. You couldn’t help but cry along with him, not knowing what else to say. Muffled groans and sobs escaped his mouth, quieted by your shirt you were wearing. Each cry felt like somebody was stabbing you repeatedly, the vibrations from his wails shaking you to your core.
“Im sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” He wailed. “I’m just so fucking tired of this planet!”
“S-stop apologizing, R-Reiner...” you say, a knot forming in your throat. “L-let’s just go over here, okay? R-Relax.”
You take his hand and guide him up a few steps to lead him to his bed, where he quickly sits down, unable to stand because of the intense emotions. You sit down with him, in fear of what he would do if you left. You reached out a hand, which he quickly started to hold, squeezing your palm.
Reiners cries start to calm, not entirely, but the volume has certainly gone down. He hiccuped twice before speaking clearly.
“Y-you shouldn’t have to see me like this.”
“I’ll take this over your blood all over the floor any day”, you reply, wiping a tear from your cheek. You notice a few staining his, so you quickly reach out a thumb to his cheek and wipe away a salty tear or two.
“Thanks”, he said.
You could hear some yelling outside, the distant chatter of children audible through the wall. You guessed the warrior candidates were out to play during one of the rare breaks they had.
“If Gabi saw me like that”, Reiner began. “I would be screwed. And my mother? Dear god...”
“I’ll keep this a secret if you want to”, you quickly say. “Just make sure you put that rifle somewhere else. It makes me uneasy thinking that you could... you know.”
“I’ll do that”, he adds.
“Good”, you say. “I just don’t want anything to happen to you. It’s out of protection.”
Reiner nods. “I get it.”
After sitting in comfortable silence for a moment, Reiners mouth opens, as if he was going to say something. But nothing came out.
You turn to him, confused about what he was trying to do. “Something wrong?”
“It’s nothing”, he said. “I’ve just been thinking about... about how you’ve been here all this time. When we were kids you cleaned me up after Porco beat the shit out of me. You even brought me stuff to eat when we couldn’t afford much. And now you’re here... after all of this. Why? Why are you here?”
Now that you thought about it, why were you here? What had compelled you to stick with him? Was there something more than platonic feelings towards him, No, no. That couldn’t be right, you thought. You’re only feeling these things because you missed him.
“Because... you’re my friend”, you quickly answer. “This is what friends do.”
A minuscule smile curved on Reiners pale lips, indicating he was content with your answer. “Huh.”
After sitting in a few more seconds of utter quietness, Reiner looks at the clock and quickly gets up, smoothing out the folds on his uniform. “Fuck. I told the others we would go out for drinks tonight. Plus the festival is tomorrow. Uh, wanna come with us? I’m positive the others won’t mind.”
“I don’t see why not”, you reply.
“Alright”, he says. “I’ll go shower. We’re going to the pub at 7.”
“So it’s a date?” You ask.
Reiners brow arches. “What?”
You cover your mouth, shocked at what you just said. “I-it’s a saying. Like i’ll be there. Not an actual date, of course not-“
“Oh. That’s okay”, he cuts you off. “I’ll um, see you at eight then?”
“Perfect”, you say, heading to the door, heat rising to your cheeks. “See you then!”
As you close the door, you immediately face palm yourself and sigh. Why the hell did that come out of you? Now Reiner was totally going to suspect that you felt something that is definitely not platonic, and he might leave you!
After realizing how much overthinking you were doing, that finally tore it. You felt something different for Reiner Braun. But you were going to have to hide it for a while now.

Over the City
Tumblr media
Fandom: Destiny
Rating: K+ Character(s): Commander Zavala Word Count: 1,349
You needed space to breathe. To think.
The last few weeks have been an endless onslaught of Vex, Hive, Cabal and Taken. You have lost count of how many times your Ghost has had to heal broken bones and gaping wounds, bring you back from the brink of death and revive you. Your body aches from the pain and abuse of it all. The last encounter with Cabal that morning had broken seven ribs, punctured a lung and almost eviscerated you.
Now, as it nears midnight, you find solace in peace. There’s a small nook in one of the western stairwells that opens to a maintenance hatch on the side of the wall. The ledge is sheltered and provides a beautiful view of the Last City that you fight each day to defend. It was worth it, but the constant kill or be killed took its toll mentally. Many guardians that you knew had taken themselves off on solo trips to every corner of the solar system to try and recuperate. Some were gone a few weeks, others took years to find their peace of mind again.
You could probably do with a similar bought of soul searching, but you remained purely for selfish reasons: you couldn’t leave him. Zavala. Titan Vanguard and Commander.
Since the first day you had stepped into the Tower you had admired him. His voice could put you to sleep, his honour and kindness melted your heart, and his determination to always do the right thing inspired you. At some point during this long, second life, you had fallen head over heels in love with him.
You completed each strike, mission and bounty he sent you on, but the time away from him made your heart ache. You hardly saw him at the tower either, only to collect and turn in your tasks, public announcements and when he would occasionally wander the Tower. It was a foolish love, but love nonetheless, so you had committed to working through the internal blackness of the fight at the tower, so you could still hear his voice, see his face and willingly complete the tasks he asked of you.
“You know, at some point he’s either going to figure it out, or you’re going to snap.” Your Ghost mentioned, idly floating by your shoulder and as though guessing your train of thought.
“It’s been this long and he hasn’t.” A small smile plays at the corner of your mouth. Was that a good thing? Hard to know anymore. Maybe confessing your undying love to him and getting shut down would be better for everyone. You were sure some of the other guardians were starting to piece it together, and Ikora had been giving you a look recently. If Cayde found out it would be public knowledge in a week.
“We could disappear to Nessus for a few weeks.” Ghost insisted. “There’s still a large Vex population. Just a few weeks away, see if that clears your head.”
You hummed in partial agreement, swinging your legs over the concrete ledge of your perch. Maybe it was time for a break. You weren’t a teenager, you had a job to do. “You’re right. Nessus could be good.” You agreed eventually. “I can speak to Ikora in the morning. See if she can put the request forwards to Zavala. Can’t focus on this forever.”
“Can’t focus on what?”
The deep rumble of the Commander’s voice made you jump and you damn near slipped from your ledge. “Nothing!” you answer far too hastily, your head snapping to the left to see your unwelcome intruder. How did he get here? When did he get here? “Stuff. Evening.” You really hoped the Commander couldn’t see the blush racing across your face, burning your cheeks. He probably could. You could see every inch of his solid build, from shining boots to raised eyebrow.
“Good evening.” Zavala cocked a smile. “You probably shouldn’t dangle off the edge.” He nodded towards you and, almost instinctively, you shuffled back against the wall and drew your feet up to rest on the concrete. Zavala chuckled and manoeuvred down to sit next you, tucking one leg under the other and dangling one foot over the edge. “It’s a nice evening.”
“It is.” you agreed. Look away. You urged yourself, your eyes transfixed on the side of his face. Your heart was beating a thousand beats a minute. Why was he here? You had never been alone with him like this before.
“Now, what seems to be the problem?”
You stared at him, blinking and forgetting your voice. “Nothing.” You manage to choke out eventually, pulling your eyes off his profile and out over the city. “Nothing important.”
Out of the corner of your eye you see Zavala shift and turn to face you. The blush comes rushing back to your cheeks. “If it is worrying one of my most hardworking guardians, then it must be important.” He urged, almost gently.
“It’s nothing, really, just… thinking. Maybe I need a break? I don’t know. Ghost suggested maybe taking an extended order on Nessus. A few weeks. Nothing more. Maybe. I’m not sure. I like being here. In the Tower with everyone. With you.” Shit. “All! With everyone.” Double shit.
If Zavala picked up on your rambling mistake (he almost certainly couldn’t have missed it) he didn’t say anything. If you had been able to pluck up the courage to look at him, you would have seen a gentle smile playing out across his features.
“Sorry.” You shake your head. “I can’t imagine you’re here to listen to my problems. Are you here to give me an earful about being out here?”
“Not at all.” Zavala chuckled. “I’ve known about your secret for months.”
Secret? What secret? Did he mean the wall or-
“I just thought you might like some company. I can go?” the Commander offered, making to stand.
“No!” Too hasty. “Ah, it is nice to have the company. I thought I was slightly more discreet about my hide out, that’s all.”
“I can see it from my office.” Zavala smiled, turning his attention back towards the city. “I thought best to leave you be for now, but you seemed different after your strike today. I was concerned.”
“Thank you.” You said gently, letting your legs drop back down over the side. “I appreciate the company. Today was hard, but we do it for a reason. Being out here helps me remember why we fight.”
The two of you fell into gentle silence, watching the lights of the sprawling city far below. It was nice. Calming. The stress of the day was already falling away and the pain in your ribs hurt just a little less than before. Eventually, Zavala broke the silence.
“If you want to take an extended order, I will not deny your request.” He said gently, turning once more to look at you. “I shall miss you, but I will authorise it.”
“Miss me?” you couldn’t help but look at him. You mean to argue that there were other guardians just as dedicated, just as skilled, if not more so, but those bright blue eyes caught yours and you felt yourself getting lost in the way he looked at you. Really looked at you.
“Yes. I will miss you.” Zavala said, reaching out and taking your hand. His hand was warm against yours as he placed a gentle kiss on your knuckles. “But I can let you go if you need to. Just as long as you promise to come back.”
You nodded mutely, your hand still clasped in his. “Always.”
Zavala smiled and placed another kiss on your knuckles before dropping your hand into your lap. “I don’t know about you, but I need dinner. I think the noodle hut is still open. Dinner?”
A smile pulled at the corners of your mouth and you ducked your head to try and hide it. “Dinner.” You agreed, and allowed him to pull you to your feet.
Maybe just a quick strike on Nessus would suffice.

Mission Complete Ch. 3
You had two goals in life. One: Complete your squad training without dying. Two: Fuck Levi Ackerman
Pairings: Levi/f!reader
Warnings: Swearing, eventual smut, lmk if I need to add anything~
Two months later
This was it. This is what everything your training had led up to.
Your first mission outside the walls with Captain Levi. The mission itself was fairly simple, more of a test run than anything really, for Levi to see how his new squad would respond to him and each other under the immediate threat of Titans. Everyone had gone over the training formation so many times you knew everyone's position by heart. You all were to ride to the Titan forest, arrive as close to sunset as possible, and work on constructing a makeshift shelter in the trees. You had wriggled your way up to being Levi's second in command, and all thirst aside (although she was a persistent one), you held a great amount of respect for him.
You tied your hair back before giving yourself one last once-over in the mirror, nodding satisfactorily at what you saw before jogging to the entrance of the camp where the captain was waiting for you. "Sorry Cap, were you waiting long?" You piped, proud of yourself for your unwavering ability to speak like a normal person in the presence of the man you wanted to deep throat.
Levi frowned. "How many times do I have to tell your stupid ass to stop calling me Cap. You know I hate that."
You shrugged. "Guess I'm too stupid to remember you telling me, so it's probably gonna be a while." I feel like it would put a strain on our professional relationship to call you Daddy in front of the entire squad
"You're an idiot. Let's go, we're running late. We only have today to buy the supplies we need for the mission. Did you grab the list I gave you yesterday?"
You nodded, patting your ass where the paper sat nice and folded in your pocket. "Sure did, wanna check?" you winked. Damn, you were ballsy today.
"Not on your life. Come on." Okay, that one stung a little bit.
You pouted, feeling a genuine amount of hurt as you both saddled your horses and began the trip to town. You were comfortable enough to occasionally flirt with the captain when you were alone, making sure to play it off as though it meant nothing. He never reciprocated your flirtations, but from what you could tell he didn't seem outwardly repulsed by them and he never told you to stop, so you figured you were on safe grounds. You were still just as clueless as the first day if he held any type of special feelings for you; you almost cursed your ability as an excellent scout, because that meant he really did choose you as his second based on talent as opposed to some hidden attraction. You were beginning to wonder if maybe he wasn't even interested in sex, you really had no other explanation for someone of his position with those looks to not at the very LEAST have a little side fuck here and there. Your personal conversations were kept to a minimum, but thanks to you both running into each other in the mess hall late at night on multiple occasions for a midnight cup of tea you knew the basics of his past from the underground, you knew his mother was a topic you knew better than to breach, and you knew the gist of him being dragged into the scouts by Erwin, which was more than you could say for the rest of the squad. He had never mentioned a woman -or man for that matter- and thanks to your late night habits you had never heard him trying to sneak anyone in or out of his chambers. You had resigned yourself to being a thirsty little bitch for the rest of whatever life the Scout Regiment decided to grant you, which reminded you that you absolutely had to find a way to sneak from the captain long enough to buy a new dildo, seeing as old faithful finally decided to bite the dust.
"Oi, are you planning on looking anywhere else the rest of this ride or are you just going to keep staring at me the entire time?"
You blinked rapidly, shaking your head. "Sorry Cap, guess I just spaced out and you were the lucky target of my loving gaze," you teased.
Levi decided to ignore the nickname in favor of his next statement. "That's not like you. Just because we aren't in Titan territory doesn't mean you don't get to be off your guard. There could still be danger nearby," he chided.
"Well it's a good thing you're here to protect me, my big, strong Captain," you cooed.
He was quiet for a moment and you nudged your horse forward, worried you had seriously pissed him off. If there was one thing Levi did not tolerate, it was laziness. When you were right next to him you peered over, frowning slightly. "Sorry Captain, I shouldn't have spaced so mu-Oh fuck me, are you blushing?" The pink hue across Levi's cheeks was unmistakable. Holy shit. You had done it. You had made Captain Levi fucking blush. You. You made him blush, and you hadn't even brought up getting fucked.
Levi made a show of moving his horse away from yours, clearing his throat loudly. "Get your mind out of the gutter, fucking brat. If you're going to be so goddamn annoying just go back to whatever daydream you were entertaining, I shouldn't have wasted my time. Fucking idiot." The fact he was even more ruthless only further confirmed what you knew. You smirked, not caring if he saw you as you strode leisurely along him.
"Whatever you say, Captain."
You laughed off the death glare he sent you.
The arrival into town was as smooth as expected. Deciding to drop the issue of the earlier little incident, you two set out, bargaining and bartering your way through countless shops to gather the supplies you would need for the upcoming mission on the limited funds you had been given. Overall the trip came out successful; you had even managed to sneak another replacement for your pillow pal while Levi went off to to get his monthly tea supply, and it now sat hidden amongst some other items you had purchased for yourself. It was dusk by the time you both had gathered everything you needed, and now pouring rain, rendering your lanterns useless. The already miserable and wet nature of the trip quickly took a turn for the worse when you picked up on the presence of something surrounding you. One glance at Levi told you he was aware of the threat and he discreetly glanced to the side where most of the threat seemed to be coming from. He mouthed the number twelve and you swallowed hard. Even with his talent, neither of you could see a thing in this rain, and you couldn't afford to lose the supplies you had worked all day to get. You reached for the pistol on your hip, blinking quickly at the rain that dripped into your eyes. Your horse was the one pulling the supply wagon, it would be up to you to make sure it wasn't stolen.
"Now!"
You jumped at the sound of the foreign voice, jumping off of your horse and landing on the cart, drawing your pistol in one hand and your knife in the other. It was all a blur from there, one minute you were struggling in a fight against two hooded men trying to knock you off, the next you were in the air, and you were only vaguely aware of the captain yelling your name before everything went black.

It had been four excruciating hours of tossing and turning in your bed, listening to everyone else snoring away peacefully. It seemed as if every little noise kept you awake; the creaks and groans of the old building, the rustling of blankets, and every few minutes Connie would mumble something incoherent in his sleep. Outside, you could hear the wind howling over the walls like a banshee out for vengeance.
“Goddammit,” you muttered while irritably rubbing your exhausted eyes. Rolling over onto your side did nothing. Switching to your stomach made it worse. And every time you closed your eyes to try and force yourself to fall asleep, you could see nothing but Titans running towards you and vibrant splashes of blood from fallen soldiers.
Your stomach growled. Maybe a midnight snack would help. You pushed back the blankets and swung your legs over the side of the bed, not bothering to put your boots on. Your bare feet tiptoed across the room to grab someone’s coat that was hanging up by the door and slipped it over your shoulders. It was thick and warm, and smelled suspiciously like Jean.
The hallways of the barracks were silent and empty, except for the creaking wood and howling wind outside. The sconces lining the walls were on their last few embers, dousing the corridor in a dim, hazy light. You silently passed through the mess hall and into the larder, making sure to close the door tightly behind you so you wouldn’t be caught. The scent of dried meats, stale bread, and crates of herbs made your stomach growl again. You carefully picked through the rations, stealing a little chunk of bread and an apple. As you gathered your prizes, your gaze lingered on an old, antique teapot resting upon the counter. Dusty chipped teacups were nestled beside it. Tea. You had almost forgotten what it tasted like. Your fingers reached out and slid along the porcelain, leaving a trail in the layer of dust.
Taking another quick glance around, you saw there were no tea bags anywhere in sight. Disappointed, you took one last longing look at the teapot and left the larder with the apple and chunk of bread in your arms.
As you sneaked back towards the scout’s quarters, you accidentally took a wrong turn down a different hallway. You silently cursed yourself with a mouthful of apple, but something at the end of the hall caught your eye. Warm, yellow light was spilling out from a cracked doorway. Someone else was awake.
Just go back to sleep, stupid, the little voice in your head scolded. If you’re caught with stolen food, you’ll be stuck cleaning the stables out for weeks.
But curiosity got the better of you, and you found yourself tiptoeing down the hall towards the door, taking another bite of the apple.
You crept up and peeked through the crack, chewing as quietly as you could. The light was coming from a fireplace, and your eyes widened as you saw the captain sitting languidly in a chair, a book laying open in his lap. His head was bent down as he read, his dark hair falling into those striking grey eyes. You paused in your chewing as you stared at him. He was always so unapproachable and distant, but right now he looked….peaceful. His usual disinterested expression had softened, his eyes lazily scanning over the page in his lap. But why was he awake at this hour? Was this why he always had dark circles under his eyes?
You decided it was time to return to your quarters and leave the captain to his book. But when you took a step back, the floorboard creaked rather loudly underneath your toes. You froze in fear, blood running cold. A few seconds of silence passed. Maybe he hadn’t heard you.
“It’s considered impolite to spy,” you heard the captain call from within his room.
Shit. For a split second you debated on just sprinting all the way back to your room. He would never know it was you. But instead, you let out a defeated sigh and gently pushed his door open wider, sticking your embarrassed face through the crack. He placed a thumb in his book and rested his chin on his hand. The hardened expression you were so accustomed to had returned.
“I’m sorry,” you apologized through a mouthful of apple. You hastily swallowed it and wiped your mouth. “It’s late, sir. Why are you awake?”
“Why are you stealing rations in the middle of the night?”
With a guilty grimace, you hid the apple core and the chunk of bread behind your back. “I wasn’t stealing.”
“So you were planning on giving it back?”
“N-no…” You swallowed nervously. “I just….couldn’t sleep.”
His grey eyes scanned your oversized coat and over your sleeping attire, finally coming to rest at your bare feet. They flicked back up to your face. “I see.”
You shifted uncomfortably as an awkward silence fell between the two of you. “I’ll leave you to it, sir. I’m sorry for bothering youー” Your sentence was cut short as you noticed the steaming teapot sitting on a table nearby. “Is that...is that tea?”
He gave a sidelong glance to the pot and then back to you. “It is.”
“I love tea,” you said softly, words filled to the brim with longing. “I haven’t had it since Shiganshina fell.”
“You’re from Shiganshina?” he asked, unable to hide his surprise as he leaned forward in his chair. “I thought it was only Eren, Armin, and Mikasa.”
“It’s not something I like to talk about,” you replied, averting your eyes. The image of the Colossal Titan looming over Wall Maria invaded your thoughts, and you heard the distant screams of your older sisters as they were devoured alive. The apple you had gripped in your hand became less than appetizing.
“I’m sorry for your loss.”
The unwelcome sting of tears in your eyes made your cheeks burn with shame. You swallowed the lump in your throat. “It was a long time ago.”
Silence again. The only sound in the room was the soft crackling of the flames in the fireplace, until you heard him shift in his chair.
“Would you like some tea?” he finally asked.
You blinked rapidly in surprise as you looked up at him. His head was tilted in amusement, still resting on the knuckles of his hand. You glanced over to the teapot, nostrils flaring as the scent of the sweet leaves steeping inside of it wafted over to you. You nodded.
He gestured towards it with his other hand, signaling for you to sit down and help yourself. You slipped into the room and closed the door behind you, trying not to look too eager as you seated yourself at the table and took a teacup in your trembling hands. However, you hesitated as you felt the cool porcelain underneath your fingertips. The last time you had enjoyed a cup of tea, it had been with your sisters the morning that Shiganshina fell. You stared at the pot with your eyebrows knit together, trying to erase their distant screams from your memory.
“Are you going to sit there and stare at it all night?” Levi asked, getting up from his chair and taking the seat across from you. “Or are you going to pour some?”
The cup that was clutched in your fingers trembled. You were gripping it so tightly you were afraid it would crack, your knuckles taut and white. The memory of your sisters’ blood splattered all over the ruined cobblestones refused to leave your mind.
You set the teacup down and gently pushed it away with shaking fingers. This was a bad idea. Your throat started to constrict, and the walls of the room seemed to close in on you. How could you indulge in such a luxury when your sisters were dead? You didn’t deserve it. You weren’t even sure if you deserved to be alive.
“[Y/N].”
Levi’s voice ripped you from your thoughts, and you looked up at him with heartbroken eyes that glistened with unshed tears. His fingers delicately touched the rim of your cup and pushed it back towards you. He lifted the teapot and poured the steaming tea to the brim, the familiar scent clouding your senses. Levi set the pot down and folded his hands, watching you with intent, waiting for you to pick it up.
Your lower lip trembled as you took the hot cup in your hands again and raised it to your mouth. The steam warmed your cheeks. With an uneasy breath, you carefully sipped from it. You swallowed and gently set it back down, staring at your reflection in the amber liquid. It tasted like home.
“Well?”
You looked up at him, a glimmer of a smile forming on your features. “My sisters would be impressed.”
Levi leaned back in his chair and gracefully inclined his head in gratitude. “How many did you have?”
“Four,” you replied, taking another sip of tea. “I was the youngest.” As each day went by, it was harder and harder for you to remember their faces. Your hand moved to fiddle with the locket hanging from your neck. Inside was an old, yellowed picture of the five of you―but the quality of the photograph had been ruined by time. “Do you have any siblings?”
“I do not.”
“I miss them,” you said quietly, letting your hand fall from the locket. “I can barely remember what they look like.”
“I’m sure they’d be proud of you.”
You chuckled wryly, running your thumb along the edge of the teacup. “I don’t know about that. They’d probably be upset that I joined the Corps.”
“Why did you join?”
“Revenge,” you answered truthfully, giving him a shrug. “For them.” You could almost hear the lecture your eldest sister would have given you had she been alive to see you become a Scout. You let out another low, breathy laugh at the thought.
He responded with a thoughtful hum, still watching you drink your tea. That hardened expression had dissipated again, leaving him looking relaxed and content. This was probably the longest conversation you ever had with the captain―he was never one for many words. But now, you had caught a glimpse of his inside life. As you sipped from the teacup, your eyes wandered around his room.
It was mostly bare, with a bed and washbasin in one corner. There was an armoire in another. The giant fireplace split the room in half, his wooden chair sitting in front of it. A small stack of books sat at the end of his bed. Behind you was his desk, covered in papers, inkwells, and quills.
You tipped your head back and finished the tea in one gulp, setting it down with a satisfied sigh. “I should head back.”
He bowed his head as you scooted your chair back. You stood up and looked at the tea set appreciatively, a finger reaching out to glide around the rim of the used cup again. He continued to silently watch you, until you retracted your hand and gave him a sad smile.
“Thank you for the tea,” you said softly, flexing your hand as if it had been burned. You could just barely feel the memory of your eldest sister pushing a similar cup into your fingers, all those years ago. “And thank you for your company.”
“Get some sleep,” he said, grey eyes following you as you crossed the room and stopped at the door.
Your hand paused on the knob and you glanced over your shoulder at him. “You should sleep too, sir.”
He blinked, but said nothing. You gave him another grateful smile and disappeared into the hallway, letting the door quietly click shut behind you.

Levi stayed seated at the table after [Y/N] left. He stared at the door for what felt like hours, until he turned his head and looked down at the teapot in front of him. The steam had long disappeared from the spout, and the cup [Y/N] had used was going dry. He ran his tongue over his teeth and picked it up, rolling it between his fingers.
His mother had loved tea. It was the reason he drank it so often. Every night, he brewed a pot and left it on the table because the smell of it was comforting to him when his insomnia was the worst, like it had been tonight.
Levi set the cup down and looked back at the door again, the scent of [Y/N]’s hair still lingering in the room. He got up from the table with a tired sigh and returned to his chair in front of the fireplace. He tipped his head back to let it rest along the edge of the chair and stared up at the ceiling. Perhaps he had a new reason to leave a pot of tea out each night.
